I would advocate for some more attention paid to our subordinate journeymanlings. Kind of our job to keep track of 'em.

And to hope some of them don't cause diplomatic crisis.

Map is not the only usage though: we could probably quickly project, for example, org chart of enemy organization, schematics of some tool or other visualizations. So maybe naming it "map" is a misnomer, come to think of it.

I don't think map is a misnomer, although the use in non-combat applications is obvious. It does crude-ish stereometry, which should be, among other things, useful in explaining things like Mathilde's Matrix.

A joke for apprentices: Mathilde's Matrix is so incomprehensible that Mathilde had to invent another spell just to be able to explain it.

I like that this chapter is basically Conan O'brie'ns favor reaction to a joke. 'Horror... fading into acceptance'. Basically, everytime some dwarf enters the room. 'Oh dread magic... wait that is awesome'.
Eh, to be fair, you can do all that stuff with lesser magic. What Mirage Map is good for is that it lingers and allows you to edit the parameters without having to recast the whole spell--something largely at its best for battlefield mapping or really complicated 3D Diagrams.
You mean like spell matrices? This will show up in classes like a week after she writes a paper on it an summits it, with two spells like this I can see her rep being as the mage who makes utility spell that other colleges instantly decide they need their own versions of. In a few decades she is 'Mathilde, you know that mage that inspires all the other colleges to make their own versions of all her original spells'.

I'm bettering long term the dwarfs will have a runic version that can be operated by a journeydwarf to keep them out of trouble mid invasion. Bring in the war table and save brain power for the tactics instead of visualization. If they can make it record things long term they are basically a specialized, runic computer. Only take 2-4 hundred year to get them mainstream.
It won't change the battlefield in dramatic ways, it won't make the enemy army route in terror, but it will take the gathering and expression of information and turn it into a tool that will save lives while causing immense problems for an opponent.
It is best suited for 3D fighting. Particularly urban and tunnel networks. Anywhere where you have to spend much of your time visualizing the battlefield in complex geography and things can change on a dime. Now the brain power tied up in visualizing it can be subcontracted into brain parts organizing things. It also makes explaining the current situation to people that show up at staggered times so much easier as they can just look for the map and that handles most of the catch up. She already introduced the idea of map markers so you can label key points as well. In a fluid environment like a war room time is lives. Granted its more handy than glorious for surface fighting, but still rather helpful.

So your not going to use it to obliterate an Everchosen directly or anything, but its a massive time saver for command and control uses. Wouldn't be surprized if their is a kitbashed runic version in a week or two of down time.

The only local runepriest is Kragg the fucking Grimm.

He doesn't do kitbashed.

Mmm, to be fair, something like this I imagine is... Difficult for runic magic, because they're all about strictly enforced and limited magic manifestations to get specific effects out, but it means that it's 100% safe to use.

A stunt like this demands a certain level of fluidity and sway that dwarfen runecraft struggles with, but that mono-wind experts can excel in.

That being said, figuring out a design of this we can enchant would be a hell of a coup for the overall campaign. A 'Display emitter', then maybe a pointer that's linked to it that serves to allow even a non-caster to adjust the diagram?

I can imagine that the Dwarven equivalent will be some kind of defensive set up, basically a runic device that will project a map of the hold that can be used to quickly mark where new tunnels have been dug, where the enemy is and stuff like that.

To be honest, I imagine the Dwarfs would just use a blackboard or something, or have a scale model of the location built that they have beardlings running around with tokens to represent it.

Something like this is valuable purely when you're the attacker in a highly chaotic situation, like this campaign is liable to be.

Yeah, when you have a bit more time it's a bit less valuable.

Mind, still worthy and useful utility spell, and Grey Wizards of all people are liable to be in highly chaotic situations, so it's far from useless.
But it's not some revolutionary thing, it's just more fast and convenient than paper and pencil.

It's the magical equivalent of those convenient holographic screens you have in science fiction stories that are used to easily display information to the audience despite the fact that making something like that would take a lot of time.

You don't actually have any evidence that wizards aren't creating spells. Just that they're not subsequently being spread throughout the whole College. There would be a lot of wizards for whom that's too much trouble to bother with.
Could you point to the part where this disagrees with my post?
Signs point to Wizards creating spells but the vast majority never entering the library of spells. Explaining why that might be was part of my post. Of course, the whole thing warrants a "Highly Speculative" tag.
This conclusion is disproved by the existence of standardised spells with their creators names still present.
From the discussion I have been given to understand that those are (mostly?) Battle Magics, which may have different naming conventions.

Honestly, the inspiration of my post was that I don't want Mathilde to be the kind of Hypercompetent Uberwizard Protag who casually and single-handedly creates new spells every few years despite the whole spell list being below two dozen after nearly two centuries of work from the entire Grey College. It's that sort of stuff that quickly breaks my immersion but is extremely common in quests. I'm happy with her being very competent and the next Wizard Lord and perhaps even more, but this seems a bit much.

Same with the ability to cash in large amounts of reputation points for personal gain. Don't want her to be kited out with better equipment than an Elven Prince or Dwarven King, and I'm fairly sure we are already on our way to that.

I have over time mellowed from my disappointment in our familiar. I still wanted a cat though. But a wolf is not as bad as a dog at least.

Tbh, I'd kinda want to spend time with three people and just take our pupper with us while we meet them, but this is ok imo.

Edit: changed vote to:

[X] King Belegar Ironhammer
[X] Head Ranger Ulthar Alriksson
[X] Grand Master Ruprecht Wulfhart

[X] Mathilde's Aethyric Projection
[X] Mathilde's Multidimensional Aethyric Projection

Hope we take our pupper with us when we go meet people, espically when (if), we meet the head Ulric person.

[x] [Name] Mathilde's Mystical Plotting

It's not just a map, it's a multifunctional 3D plotter, you know. That's what grey wizards do, they plot.

I feel that Wizard Architects and Engineers are going to get a lot of use for this. A model that can be changed on the fly can be real valuable.

That makes sense for a piece of technology. We're dealing with magic though. A jar of fog that can be unsealed and directed to expand into a map would be more in keeping with the thematics.

Well I'm afraid you're out of luck because Mathilde is already an exception. Her skill in magic, just out of her journeying, is at the higher end of what most Magisters can expect to hit in their lifetime.

I'm on mobile at the moment, so I'll leave the rest for later.

Then it goes around again with more thoughtful pauses around it, and as the sun begins to dip in the sky, King Belegar gives his first edict and Clan Huzkul is born. Any Clanless that spilled blood or hauled corpses is welcomed into it and made a citizen of Karak Eight Peaks.
By the way, it was only mentioned in the passing but isn't this a very, very big thing among the dwarves?
