Several hundred years later, a Magister is standing next to a Dwarven thane amid a field of dead Orcs, and the Thane asks "How did you do it, Manling? They fought like stunned sheep."

"I can't take all the credit. The idea came from someone as much one of yours as one of ours." The Dwarf prepares to bristle at the idea of a Dwarven magic user. "Dame Weber, of the Eight Peaks."

The Thane settles down, with a grudging "Oh, aye. That one I'll give you." while meanwhile yet another army tries to force Death Pass and gets turned into nega-flaming goo by the Sword of Gazul.

Goooooood. Now we have a way to get Magic 10. Just need to learn Battle Magic, since its the most likely way to get Arcane Marks, and hope we get lucky on the Gatcha and get the Rune Of Ulgu, though Shrouded wouldn't be terrible.
I feel like I have some objections to the "let's crit/miscast fish on objectively the most dangerous spells around so that we can get a specific Arcane Mark" plan. There have got to be safer ways to get to Magic 10.

Let's worry about M10 after we make a staff.

[X] King Belegar, as he arranges for Clan Ironspike to rejoin their ancestral home from Karak Hirn.
[X] Gretel, who's apparently spending her newly-earned wealth to make herself at home.
[X] Max, during the few breaks in the silence as the two of you worked on Queekish in the Room of Serenity.
[X] Francesco Caravello, proud leader of the Undumgi and possible future Thane.
[X] Kragg, who's begun to be seen around the Karak once more, indicating he might be finishing his study of the rune-axe you and Johann found.
[X] Check in on your fief in Stirland.

[X] Yes, have one social interaction be initiated by someone other than Mathilde.

We joke, but "throws their name on everything" is a reasonable personality quirk for someone who may have shadow magic crawl down their back and make people forget about them.
Being forgotten is a hell of a fear, and if your name is on everything, it's evidence that you were there, that you were real.
-Who were this Mathilde whose name is on all this stuff?
-Dunno, probably some sort of Grey College in-joke.

I will never vote in favour of learning more battle magic.
Thats fine, but I'm going to vote we do learn literally all the battle magic, because I think their fucking awesome, and I'd love to have the chance to drop a pit of shades on a boss or a large mob of assholes.

I mean, if we learn Battle Magic, BoneyM did just say its somewhat likely to get an Arcane Mark from it. I already wanted to learn Battle Magic before this, I've never made a secret of it, but now it comes with the great side benefit or Magic 9/10. Its like wanting to get a couple gold nuggets but you also found a chuck of emerald while your at it. The Emeralds a great bonus but the reason you wanted to dig the mine in the first place is for the gold.

Rolling on the arcane marks table for +1 magic is what Battle Wizards do. We're not a Battle Wizard, we have a plethora of other things to do besides getting more magically powerful. Every time we gain an arcane mark there's a not insignificant chance it'll completely mess up Mathilde's life permanently.

We'll also get the cool benefit of never getting to leave our new room in the grey college except to fight stuff. Because then we would be a battle wizard, and cease to have any agency beyond "I'm gonna blast that guy first"

Dunno about you but that sounds boring as fuck

[X] Gunnars, to see if you can pierce his terse nature.
[X] Princess Edda, as she oversees the reopening of a long-dormant silver mine north of Death Pass.
[X] Francesco Caravello, proud leader of the Undumgi and possible future Thane.
[X] Karak Hirn, to satisfy your curiousity about Prince Ulthar.

I have a pretty clear mark of Magic9 Learning 30 as a point where I would consider further risks to learn the less complicated Battle Magic spells acceptable-ish with an application of Ranald's coin.

Pit of Shades, being the most difficult Battle Spell to cast by far does not belong to that category, and so probably a couple of other spells.

See my post above, the +1 magic is a nice side benefit to something I already wanted to do, and more magic power just makes all our spells better and easier to cast. There's also a chance we cast any spell we mistcast and mess up Mathilde's life permanantly. I don't see people wanting to stop being a Wizard.

No we won't, that is for people who choose to dedicate themselves as Battle Wizards, learning Battle Magic doesn't make you a Battle Wizard, or Melkoth would be one when he INVENTED the signature battle magic spell of the Grey College.

Even under the best circumstances, Mathilde has a coin flip chances of fucking up battle magic spell and eating a miscast.

It's a terrible idea; if we want to safetly-ish cast a battle magic spell we should have Mathilde try to develop one herself.

(That's ignoring the fact that the rest of the arcane marks range from bad to actively fucking up her life).

Every time we dig in that mine, there is a nontrivial chance that we die.

Like, forget the Arcane Marks that fuck up our life, Battle Magic always has a miscast chance. We miscast on baby's first Battle Magic. I am skeptical enough of "Plan Have Battle Magic In Our Back Pocket." "Plan Deliberately Collect Battle Magic Because Difficult Casting Rolls Give Us Chances To Get Marks" is insane.
There's also a chance we cast any spell we mistcast and mess up Mathilde's life permanantly. I don't see people wanting to stop being a Wizard.
We have a high enough Magic score to cast anything from the normal spellbook without chance of miscast.

"I wanna learn ALL the battle magic!"
"Ok to learn all of it you have to be a Battle Wizard."

There is a difference between rolling a bad dice and literally trying to do it to nuke yourself. All of my no, forever.

The chance that Melkoth is the guy that invented that battle magic spell is almost nil. Hes almost certainly taken on the name because of it rather than the other way around.

Any way if you want a safe way to get Mag 10 ulgu tongs or further wind sage improvements are probably the way to go. Obviously an enchanted staff is mag9.

We gained an arcane mark on a crit success this turn evidentally not all arcane marks come from miscasts.

Posts like this seem to forget that the numbers are meant to be a mechanical abstraction and not an actual thing, and that the numbers represent a person. An arcane mark is not something to deliberately go after... it's like walking out in as storm with a metal pole to get hit by lightning, in the hopes that you'll get a cool Lichtenberg figure out of it. It's utterly insane.
