One of the few pieces of canon lore we have on the Shadowgor Warherd claims that they specifically hunt down Bretonnian knights because they like to use the helmets as war trophies.

I think the hard part of getting Bretonnian help is figuring out how to fit so many Knights Errant into the beastpaths.

I didn't know that, you make a very good point.

If we manage to have Bretonnia declare an Errantry War for the Forest of Gloom, have some support from the Empire and the Southern Realms (wich likely would be very happy to see the Forest of Gloom stop spitting out Waaghs and Waherds against them) and the full might of the Karaz Ankor behind us.

Then the campaign becomes a lot less "insane Hell War" and more "hard fought invasion of hostile territory".

Unless we are very unlucky and the Goblins/Beastmen have some very skilled commanders that decide to turn the Forest of Gloom into Fantasy Vietnam.

Having our forces slowly bleed out after an incredibly long guerrilla campaign.

I think only closer Hellwar is Skavenblight and calling them to it is ...eouch. That is a war that I am not interested in having at all. Not without some really good advantage anyhow.

To take Skavenblight, we would need the combined might of the Empire, Ulthuan, Karaz Ankor, Bretonnia, Kislev and probably several of the Southern Realms.

And that is the best case scenario, in wich other enemies don't take advantage of the Forces of Order begin distracted waging an Hell War against the Skaven to invade.

We could find a big enough Waagh to manipulate into attacking Skavenblight to weaken it.....

Any idea were good old Grimgor Ironhide is currently? We have a job for him!

I feel like readers are glossing over how terrifying the fact that Mathilde can just casually whipping up and then directing a minor Waaagh!is to most of people in setting.

Imagine if she actualy put some effort into it.

Rallying a giant Waaagh! Just to use it as a deniable asset.

We will -I think- have to bring Ranaldian faithful to Forest of Gloom reclamation. Considering the place seem to be his cradle Ranaldians have to be forefront of the reclamation in order to turn it to holy ground again and they would need the credit to take it without challange.
So Mathilde has to help hide a group of mercenaries among a throng of other forces Mathilde can bring. The Forrest of gloom has a lot of horrors that a lot of people would want to see things dead in the Forrest. That Mathilde could help found a village , but it is not uncommon for people to claim land they help conquer.

Adela touches down inside the clearing without powering down the engine, and the moment you step out you can feel it. The power of Mork, yes, but it is out of tune with the power you're familiar with, underlaid with something else. This holy place is a pentiment, a palimpsest - a surface layer over something deeper and older and truer. The shadows here are impenetrably deep, and would remain so even if the webs above were removed entirely. They retreated in a circle around the hole of sunlight that Adela's fire let in not as a surrender to it, but as a welcome.

You called on a divinity to seek something ancient and lost, and in this place, it is impossible for that divinity to find anything but this. This place was sacred to Them before the name and form that you know, before the name and form that others know, before any name still spoken on this world. This place is more ancient than anything you can name, and more lost than anything you can comprehend.
The idea of bringing Bretonnian help to reclaim the Forest of Gloom nexus or other nexuses has been floated before. If The Lady is confirmed to be a daughter then maybe we could ask Her servants to do a little detour and reclaim one of Her father's ancient holy sites.

Forest of Gloom is not that far away from the Bretonnia. About as far as Forest of Shadows we were talking about upthread.

When you are going to war against Skavenblight, if you aren't willing to raise your troops as undead to throw them back into the fight, then you aren't willing to win.

And you shouldn't start a fight if you aren't willing to do what it takes to win.

I am honestly perfectly happy if the Portativ wins. Organs are hella cool.

Remember that when they got cut off, Khazalid didn't have a word for Wizards. I suspect them using the Imperial term is a reflection partly of their already evident diversion from the greater KA on things and partly not wanting to insult Mathilde by associating her profession with an existing prejudice.
Ah yes, I suspect that Vlag would be very hesitant to disrespect Mathilde and her profession after freeing Vlag with the protector coin in place. It might even be that they excised any such references in their language and refuse to use them in honour of her.
This is a fair take, although it could just be a more generalized respect for them given what they attempted to break out.

I don't think it's not so much directing them so much as poking them and them lashing out at the nearest visible opponent. If that'd been tried during the Reclamation, it might have been a bit of a gamble because the multiple greenskin groups would have had multiple possible targets - sure, maybe they'd have gone to attack Skaven or whatever, but they could also have attacked the Citadel, I think.

I've long been very much enamored by the aesthetics of the wheel lyre, but it feels a bit fragile compared to an organ (even if it's a miniature one)

I mean, its a fortress alright but its not really like, anymore unassailable than any other stronghold of other major races. So, hard target but even walls of Karaz-a-Karak have been breached and Dwarves are THE defence faction.

The actual issue with taking Bretonnians in there is that the entire area is unstable deadmarch, not really great place for cavalry attack. It's not a great place for any kind of attack quite frankly, but cavalry especially is kinda really bad for this kind of terrain.

The main thrust of the discussion continues on, and the eventual conclusion is a simple one: when, in the fullness of time, the Runesmith Clans of Karak Eight Peaks and Karak Vlag are refounded, it will be as Brother-Clans, more so than is usual for even the descendants of Thungni.
I was surprised that they're refounding Karak Vlag's Runesmith Clan. But I'm definitely interested in how it will be shaped by the Rhunkit. That will be fascinating to read about. It's neat to see Karak Eight Peaks' clan be refounded too.

"Oma likes to say that if it's got to travel, best if it can be fixed by anyone with a forge," Eike pipes up.

Great update! It was really fun to read. I had a bit of a feeling that looking for the nexus without the scouting skill wasn't going to turn out so well, but finding Ranald's old haunt is pretty cool regardless. But it's not a bad thing to have checked the goblins off of the list.

From above, you watch the Waaagh advance deeper into the forest, and then deeper still in a direction that cannot be found on a compass. Those that eventually emerge claim victory, and you have no way of knowing or caring whether they are telling the truth. The fulcrum you seek is held by the Shadowgor Warherd within the Beast-Paths of the Forest of Gloom. Recovering the legacies lost within the Forest of Gloom would take your full attention for more time than you can spare from the Waystone Project, but would be about much more than one specific rock.

Is there supposed to be so much space between the paragraph and the section break?

Well, I know what I'm voting for this social turn.
Wouldn't it be better to wait until Mathilde can read Kislevarin? I'm not opposed to doing the social action twice, but it seems like we'd get a lot more out of reading books written by the Fire Spire if we could read the language of its host. Not all of it would be in Kislevarin, but we'd be missing a lot of context if we couldn't read it.

Shame there's no spell that could provide a road to charge down. 🤔

Unless you're kislev and you're in kislev. Then it's just Your Territory trees or no trees
Kislev could freeze the marchlands, which would actually make it cavalry viable as Den Helder has taught us.

The problem with that is that you need a lot of battle mages or a proper Battle Altar to make way for something like Bretonnian cavalry charge.

So... what the hell did Matty find exactly in that forest? If its not a nexus what the hell was it?

The implication i took was that this was one on the locations that the old ones first landed on the planet at, but I'm not sure that there's anything at all which might support that.

So now we might well have the greatest collection of research notes (outside the chaos dwarfs) on how a dwarf would go about using the winds directly if they were desperate or crazy enough to try.

I expect that the experiments that turned them to stone actually had a chance of working. Shame that they didn't.

It occurs to me that K8P is, if word of that gets out at all, is now one of the highest value targets for chaos dwarf sorcerers. After all, how often do they get a chance to read about other dwarves attempting to develop a new magic paradigm, one based off of sources the fire dwarves never touched?

It would be kind of cool to see the chaos dwarves mobilize to assault k8p- they'd have the weapons needed to break down the gates and the sorcerers needed to counterspell the eye.

When was the last time the chaos dwarfs attacked anywhere in force? I am given to understand that their true threat is just how they arm all the other evil factions.

There's not much they want that they can't get through proxy armies. Dwarven magical secrets are novel enough that they might move, because you can't trust the help to not be working for one of your rivals if you aren't there riding herd on them.
