Yeah, I mean, obviously they want to stay anonymous, and I'll try to honor that.

In the meantime, a lot of my potential productivity has been absorbed by one of the most engrossing parts of the human experience, music. Weird, I know, but ya'll know how sometimes certain concepts won't leave you alone. In this case, theme songs/character songs.

So far I've got, like, almost nothing. Nothing that quite fits to my mind. But I thought I'd pass it on to ya'll if you feel like considering it. Doesn't have to amount to anything, so no stress, just something to keep the thread a bit alive for something I consider personally interesting and thus...thread...worthy. Yeah. That works. I feel like music really is important in RL, and for all that I try to move a bit on from the Albion Quest, I do like the times when I could make the music work.

Lyrics, the general 'feel' of the music, that sort of thing, whether they mesh precisely or not.

For instance, I've got 'Dragula' by Rob Zombie for Mena von Kessel. It really connects with her general relentless growly eternal pursuit of foes to slay in the name of Ulric, the province, and the Empire. It's angry, it's tense, and that constant pushing onward fits her, I think. Feel free to correct me if you figure something better!

Elsewhere, we've got Reinhardt, who gets a nonverbal song, something called 'Promises', the Knightly Theme from the For Honor Games. He's fairly uncomplicated compared to either Mena or Magnus, of the Trident Heirs. But he still has the burning fire in him, for his mother is still the woman who once broke into an ancient vampire's tomb to retrieve a sword that could kill daemons just so she could go screaming west into Nordland with the full intention of personally ending every vile creature of Nurgle there. And he is a Knight of Verena.

Magnus though, I'm having a bit of trouble with.

Just some thoughts in case you guys were interested at all.

A theme song for Magnus ? I don't know why but this one come to mind

For a man who twice face his fear and defeated them... Well it feel right

You might crucify me for the light tone music, but this is pretty much Freddy in a nutshell.

Edit. Alternatively, Way of the warrior from Hammerfall, but i think their track Let the Hammerfall fits Magnus pretty well.

By the way, i am not the most attentive of readers and i don ´t really comb the thread outside of updates, but was there any word on the Fulcrum status?

It's fine. The Elves are working on a long-term project involving building more Waystones. They're fine. We haven't heard much, we won't hear much, please don't ask again.

They'll be done when they're done, and until then they are paying us Urgdug's weight in gold for use of it, so I'm quite fine with them.

Sorry if this seems hostile, it's just that's a very common question.

...Huh, what IS Urgdug's weight in gold?

Because that sounds like a very exploitable clause given he keeps getting fatter and fatter and fatter.

We can probably expect to hear something around the time that Magnus's son takes up the Runefang as ruler of Ostland.
Or possibly Magnus' heir. I'm not too picky, honestly.

Edit: Misread that, never mind.

Just in case you're not joking, I was just using hyperbole. It's 4,000 gold a year (like, 1/5 of our income)

They might even continue to pay us Urgdug's weight in gold for its use after they're done. If only to cast massive rituals, mass heals and/or to craft magical items.

If nothing else, the Fulcrum elevated Aurelion's family from a relatively minor house to one of the major players. I highly doubt they're going to ask her to leave the place(and the money is pretty nice).

If memory serves, they started wanting to rent it from us before they had any thought of using it for waystones. I doubt they'll pack up when they're done with that.

All things considered, I am extremely glad we did not just sell the land to them. We are marking a hell of a lot more bank then the sale would cover.

Hey @torroar i just finished binging to this point. Thank you for an amazing adventure thus far, I'll be following along.

FYI - a 'brace' of towers, or pistols, or mounts, etc. actually refers to a duo. Two total. I've seen it used interchangeably for 20 (a score) or 100 (a century) a couple times and just wanted to throw this out there if no one else hasn't pointed it out. See specifically: description for the coastal watchtowers in "Line Them Up"

Hmm. I always assumed that "gold" was an abstraction of currency, a way of representing the wealth available to an elector count while staying within the realms of human comprehension, since humans are bad at visualizing big numbers. This line of thought has opened up some interesting questions though. @torroar what is the state of currency in the Empire and the like? Are they on the gold standard, or is their currency backed by land or whatever? How standardized is currency across the Empire, and how much is one "gold" in real terms (it it even has a fixed value in game)?

As a pastiche of pre-modern Europe, they're almost certainly on some kind of gold standard.

between the centuries long split of the empire during the war of the three emperors , the mess that is the law codes of each of the provinces and the complete and utter lack of a unified code of law there would be no such thing as a standardized anything in the empire

That probably includes a standard system of weight and measurement.

Oh, add the metric system to the invention to-do list.

It's about Audie Murphy, but I can't help but think of Frederick regardless.

Frankly, even if they do, I imagine that the Colleges of Magic of the Empire will greatly desire to be able to use it themselves.

...

Come to think of it, between Bugman's Brewery, the child flame of Ulric, the Arcane Fulcrim, the Grand Kitchen of Esmerelda, Ostland's School of Gunnery and Engineering, and the Greatbellow Academy, we have a lot of different groups very interested/invested in Ostland's general safety. It's pretty remarkable.

Hell, it's good to see more provinces of the Empire rise out of the whole "backwater" status that they had/have in canon. Ostland especially, but Nordland is also on its way towards that (it already would be, were it not for Gruber wiping out 4/5ths of the population and wrecking most of the province), Ostermark is definitely doing well for itself, and Stirland is on the rise due to reclaiming Slyvania.

@torroar : some thoughts and ideas--
1) I think I mentioned before about getting some options for the Printing Press we acquired, next turn. But will we have to pay royalties to produce more printing presses? If not, can we actually inquire as to who we can pay royalties to, to at least set the precedent for the practice in the Empire (if it doesn't already exist)?

2) Can we get a research option for flintlock mechanisms, since we basically already have the technology for it (well, we are so far beyond it that it's crazy, given that we can easily produce Doomspheres and Deathspinners)? I figure it's actually past time, in a way, since there's been mention--since pretty much the first turn of the quest--of characters carrying around multiple loaded pistols, ready to fire at any time, which is impossible for matchlock guns since it requires that the match be burning constantly (and it's not like they'd be easy to light quickly). It would definitely improve reliability for guns (mainly in rainy weather, but also for use when having a gun at the ready for a long while, like guard duty or escort missions), but its main breakthrough would be allowing for guns to be used by cavalry. Since working with a lit match and loose gunpowder while riding a horse is...impractical at best, a flintlock mechanism would allow you to load a gun well ahead of time without worrying about lighting a match or dealing with an open source of ignition while on horseback. Also, I'm reasonably confident that the dwarves already use this technology for their handguns, since it'd be crazy if they didn't...

3) Would it be possible to set up some greater collaboration (obviously not next turn or anything, but over time/in a few turns) with the Gold College/Metal Wizards and our School of Gunnery and Engineering? They're by far the best chemists around (save for the dwarves, maybe), and their insight into metal would no doubt be beneficial. We could pay for their aid, certainly, and/or even create devices/weapons specifically designed to make use of their magical capabilities and augment their capabilities (like a gun that is much better than normal, but only works because they can use their magic to substitute for an operating mechanism that is beyond our capabilities, or custom suits of armor that are made from metal alloys that can only be produced with their magic aiding the process--that could be very lucrative business for both the Gold College and Ostland, given the appeal to better-than-steel armor/weapons in the Empire and beyond).

4) Given that Evangeline Hertwig is trying to basically create an anthology of the entire Karak Ungor campaign, should we expect her to come to Ostland at some point in the near future, interviewing Frederick, Anna, Magnus, Urgdug, and our veterans of the campaign? Can we get an option to use the printing press to create a plethora of copies to sell throughout the Empire? I imagine it would be a big hit, and probably do wonders to improving Imperial sentiment towards the dwarves and their plight (there's definitely lots of historical precedent for this--Uncle Tom's Cabin, a book about a fictional account of the life of several slaves in the American South, pretty hugely swayed public opinion in the American North towards abolition, for example). Hell, I imagine we could even get some copies sold to Bretonnian nobles, given how one of their veteran Questing Knights is a star of the show, so to speak.

5) Can we get a research option for mortars? Given that they're actually canon in WHFB for the Empire, and that we should already have the general tech for them...

6) Ogre grenadiers! And human grenadiers! And grenades (the primitive ones, with fuses you actually have to light) in general.

7) Ogre Beastslayers--basically heavily-armored Ogres with Ogre-sized halberds--or maybe Ogre-sized greatswords/ultra-greatswords. These orgres are meant to use their enormous strength, size, and weight to either stop a large beast/monster in its tracks (buying time for cannons and such to fire on it), or to take out swathes of weaker/smaller enemies with large swings of their halberds/greatswords. Maybe some of the Taal-focused ogres that spend most of their time patrolling the forests could use these weapons, given the likelihood of them coming across large beasts or lots of smaller enemies.

8) Since we now have an increased incentive for better roads (because of the cyclers), perhaps we could get research options into methods for producing better roads, and invent the King Road Drag? Given how utterly simple and easy to produce such a design would be, it should be within our capabilities.

9) This is a pretty cool and easily-made invention that allows for rapid firing of arrows from a bow without actually directly modifying the bow, and it's basically impossible to backfire on the user. While it's obviously not the kind of thing Ostland tends to go for in its R&D (what with Ostland's focus on gunpowder, explosives, engines, etc), we did just acknowledge that there are developments to be made in more "conventional" areas, like catapults, bows, etc, which Freddy has been working on recently. Maybe this is something he could think of when pondering about a product we could market/sell to Bretonnia?

10) Does Kislev already have snowshoes? What kind of "winter gear" do they currently have? Also, maybe we could get a research option for flint-based "fire-starting kits" for Kislev soldiers (and Empire soldiers, too, I imagine...and civilians, because I'm sure they'd like it too)?

If memory serves, Anna is taking care of it personally. It'll be ready to do things with when she's done with it.
