I have many suggestions.

Relive the events of Warcraft II orc campaign, reimagined in Reforged engine.
Experience rich lore from the events of the Second War, based on classic games and novels.

You know it, you love it, one of the best Warcraft 3 mods ever released for the game in it's entire history, entirely inspired by how fucking awful Warcraft 3 Reforged was and a desire to make something great. Multiple micro and macro missions, complete model reworking with custom ability, model, icon, UI and sounds sets for every unit involved. Some absolutely amazing levels that I don't want to spoil, but god damn is the last few levels truly impressive for what they've managed in-engine, and the follow-up Alliance campaign on track to be released very soon, possibly some time this year.

2: Troll Campaign.

A story set 16,000 years ago, when the Old Gods' minions awoke, and the trolls of Zandalar rose to challenge them. Includes:
  • Six fully voice acted quests
  • Multiple map biomes and custom creeps, bosses and units
  • Two different factions, the Zandalari Trolls and A'qir Insects
  • Custom ability, model, icon, UI, and sound sets
  • Numerous hidden secrets, from items to boss battles
  • Multiple micro and macro levels

My personal favorite Warcraft 3 custom campaign mod on offer, this one actually explores something far more unique in actually having it be set far in the past of Warcraft's history and tied directly to a lot of the really cool lore with it being focused on the Troll & A'qir wars in the past. With two entirely new factions (the Trolls and the Bugs) designed for this campaign, it's really damn good. I highly recommend it.

3. Exodus: The Violet Gate
First the Undead Scourge's corruption and then the Burning Legion's invasion has left the Alliance of Lordaeron decimated and torn apart. Former Human and Elven Kingdoms now lie in ruins, roamed by horrific undead creatures, with major cities left under the iron fist of the Dreadlords' reign. To make matters worse, betrayal and discord has struck the Alliance from within, with treacherous Blood Elves conspiring with inhuman beasts and taking arms against their Human and Dwarven brethren. Despite the overwhelming odds, dispersed groups of resistance continue their desperate struggle. Even though the chances of victory seem to diminish with every comrade lost, it is said that even in the darkest of times a new hope may emerge from where you least expect it...

Features:

  • A total overhaul of 2010 Exodus campaign
  • 13 playable chapters + interludes
  • Unique storyline that takes some concepts and characters from the predecessor, but is basically a whole new experience, introducing new plots, reimagining some events known from the Frozen Throne campaign, adding more background and depth to main characters
  • Diverse gameplay, including classic RTS-style battles with plenty of new mechanics, exploration missions, epic boss fights and more
  • Major graphical overhaul, including plenty of custom environment, structures, doodads and tiles
  • Custom heroes, units, skills and items
  • Unique models for main heroes
  • Unique AI-generated voicelines for most playable units, all dialogs and cutscenes
  • Custom scripted AI for majority of computer players
  • Heroes levelling up to 15, with 4-level basic abilities and 3-level ultimate abilities
  • Several entirely new or modified techtrees, each featuring some new units, structures and gameplay style:
    • Alliance of Lordaeron
    • Lordaeron Rangers
    • Alteraci Syndicate
    • Stormpike Dwarves
    • The Forsaken
    • Undead Scourge
    • Crushridge Ogres
    • And more…
  • All major shortcuts to units, structures and skills mapped to QWER-ASDF-ZXCV hotkeys for more intuitive gameplay
  • Custom soundtrack from Warcraft 3: Reforged, World of Warcraft and other sources
  • Normal or Hard difficulty level

A personal favourite of mine, purely for managing to bridge the fun aspects of the settings base nature with the more cosmically fun elements, this remake of an old classic campaign mod is extremely fun and very varied in all the really neat stuff you get to do while playing. Switching between multiple different factions and their gameplay, all the great custom assets and scripting, and holding on to the feeling of Azeroth actually being a massive world once more, I really recommend this one to anyone.

4. Rise of the Blood Elves

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1f9mshiI70
In a daring campaign against the Scourge in Northrend, Illidan faced off against the death knight Arthas in an attempt to destroy the Frozen Throne. However, Arthas defeated Illidan and left him wounded in the snow, allowing Illidan to witness the creation of the new Lich King.

Kael'thas Sunstrider and Lady Vashj, realising their defeat, brought Illidan with them as they fled back to Outland. Seeing their master's ugly wounds, they decide to bring him back to the Hellfire Citadel so that he may recover... but, unbeknownst to them, Outland was in a state of a minor civil war. Soon after that, tensions rise in the blood elven society as the Grand Magistrix Alessandra Katryne proposes a dangerous idea: reclamation of their homeland, Quel'Thalas.

Hey! Do you wish that World of Warcraft never killed off the RTS part of the Warcraft series? Do wonder what it would have been like to see the events of The Burning Crusade through the lens of the original Warcraft 3? Well wait no more, as this mod directly addresses the entirety of TBC by creating an entire custom campaign based around the story of TBC, converting it into multiple maps with custom Blood Elf factions to try and do just that!

And it's not a one off, as it also comes with the follow up of...

5. Curse of the Forsaken

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQnCgKY3NbE
After securing the Forsaken's hold in Lordaeron, the Banshee Queen Sylvanas Windrunner began preparing for her war against her most hated enemy, the Lich King. Her plans were delayed as the Forsaken found themselves under attack by the Scarlet Crusade, a religious human faction dedicated to the eradication of the Undead.

Undeath, loss and pain had turned the Forsaken mistrustful of the living; their destiny would be their own to seize. But as enemies lie in wait in every corner, Sylvanas Windrunner began to wonder if the Forsaken would ever be successful on their own.

Features:
  • Campaign made in the style of Blizzard's campaigns.
  • 12 chapters and 12 interludes.
  • Reimagined storyline of WotLK from WoW into WC3 style.
  • Vloice acting taken directly from WoW and HotS.
  • Forsaken player faction.

The follow up to Rise of the Blood Elves, and to TBC, is pretty much everybodies favourite, Curse of the Forsaken, which directly follows the main storyline of Wrath of the Lich King! Surprisingly in-depth with a lot of really great animations, action and custom elements, this is a great way to experience the storyline of WotLK as people have long desired, within the WC3 engine.

Another classic from the WC3 modding scene, updated to Reforged, is this campaign based on the novel Lord of the Clans, which follows how Thrall originally escaped from the internment camps and first encountered the Frost Wolves and became friends with Grom Hellscream. A great combination of micro and macro missions, and a really gem in the community modding scene.

And that's all from me for now. There is a lot more out here, but these are the best ones I can name off the top of my head.

Man, I loved messing around with the level editor back in the noughts. I never managed to get my head around scripting and never managed to put together anything that was more than playable, but I had a lot of fun with it back in the day. Maybe I should dig up my old retail copy and play it again? Or maybe try out some of these custom campaigns. Hm. Worth considering.

You specifically call out Chronicles of the Second War as being in the Reforged engine, but is that true of all of these? I think I actually have a non-reforged copy of WC3 laying around and I might be interested in checking out the WoW adaptations.

As far as I understand, using an old key to play WC3 still automatically updates it to Reforged regardless, which means you should be able to play these mods on it.
