The Heavens are merciless, the Earth ever-selfish. Mortals are only born to suffer and die. Devils whisper into the hearts of the gullible, Demons devour whatever stands in their way, Gods seek believers to validate their existence, and the Immortal seek true Eternity. Who in this clusterfuck of a world is free? Who can wander Heaven and Earth without care? Well, it sure ain't fucking you, but that doesn't mean you can't try!
TL;DR: SV has to survive a death world and come up top. Superpowers and magic are a bonus.
You can also find a scrapped version of this on other sites under the name Daoist Red Dust.

Waking Up: 1
Location
In the Grail's Church
You wake up to pitch-black darkness. A perfect empty void.

The moment this registers into your smol monkey brain, you start panicking the fuck out. OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD I'M FALLING WHAT THE FUCK DO i DO OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD Oh wait. I don't feel anything.

You wave your arms around curiously. Nothing. From what you get, you're in some sort of space and hovering. Otherwise, you would feel the air being displaced around you. Assuming this place even had air. But I'm breathing, right?

Well, now that you settled one of your immediate fears, it was time to freak out about something else! Who the in the living heck were you, where was this place, and how did you get here?

[Analyzing target's condition... Confirmed healthy, slight memory loss due to transference... Initiating memory refresh...]

The first question bounced around in your brain, leaving white-hot patches of pain that seared your mind. In the ashes, images, sounds, tastes, thoughts long forgotten, all started popping up.

[Target's checkup is complete. Initiating Inheritance of the Primeval.]

You freeze at the sound of the emotionless voice. It seems to come from all around you, or perhaps directly from your mind, you can't really tell. But you get the impression that it is very big, important, and absolutely not human.

[Welcome descended No.4444 to the Primeval Ascension Inheritance. You are one of the lucky few that have been carefully chosen out of the 3,000 enclosed Worlds the Primeval Ancestor created to protect his descendants. Your are now entitled to select one Inheritance out of the three billion that have been left behind. Additional perks include unlimited Tier-0 access to the Wisdom Realm, and limited Tier-1 access.]

Primeval Ascension Inheritance? What the actual fuck? And what do mean "3,000 enclosed Worlds"? Are we in the Matrix?

You open your mouth, and with a hoarse voice that seemed to have not been used in years asked the most important question he could think of, "W-who are you?"

[I am the spirit of the Ascension Inheritance Realm. I was created as the guardian of the 3,000 Human Worlds, the Supreme Official of the Primeval, and the Shield of the Mortal Realms...but you may call me whatever you wish.]

What do you want to call the Spirit of the Ascension Inheritance Realm?

You raise an eyebrow, "Alright #$*#*, who is the Primeval Human, and why am I here? What are the 3,000 Worlds?"

[Checking clearance level. Registered Tier-0 access.]

You jerk as a separate, similar but slightly different, voice rings out.

[As stated before, the Primeval Ancestor, also known as the First Man, was the first human being in the universe. They were a supremely powerful being who had reached the apex of power. The 3,000 Worlds is an artifact that they forged to serve as a sanctuary for their offspring. The "Earth" you are from is merely one of such worlds. You are here because the restrictions that measure the overall population of the human race have been triggered. Three billion humans, a million from each World, have been carefully chosen according to the instructions of the Primeval to be given an Inheritance and spread across the universe "outside". You, descendant No.4444, are one of said three billion.]

You try to organize the chaos stirring in your mind. Alright. I'm talking to a being created by the equivalent of the Christian God, in a weird space, probably this "ascension inheritance realm" that he was talking about, and I'm about to get an "inheritance", which might be some sort of weird superpower. What do I do? Well, when in doubt, starting asking questions.

"What are the 3 billion inheritances?"

[A systematized collection of every complete unique Art, Technique and Bloodline the Primeval had ever learned or seen in their lifetime. Each one is equally powerful and can last an Inheritor to the end of the First Step. Every chosen descendant may choose only one Inheritance.]

"What is the First Step?"

[Checking clearance level. Registered limited Tier-1 access. Would you like to use it?]

The other voice again. It seems to only appear when my 'clearance level' needs to be checked and mentions tiers. That suggests that information is limited and needs some sort of rank to see. "What is Tier-1 clearance and why is it limited?"

[Access to the Wisdom Realm is restricted into tiers, and can be unlocked by humans through merit or materials. Tier-0 access compromises the most basic information possible about the Spirit and Realm, while Tier-1 access relates to cultivation knowledge. You may access the Wisdom Realm 3 times with your limited Tier-1 access. Each session in the Wisdom Realm lasts for 1 Mortal Cycle. The Earth-345 analog would be thirty minutes. Would you like to access the Wisdom Realm with your limited Tier-1 Access.]

Normal voice now. Does the Spirit have different "settings" or avatars assigned to separate tasks? It would make sense. After all, how else would it interact with three billion people? Also, cultivation? Isn't that, like, some Taoist myth about becoming immortal through magical drugs and punching people?

"Would knowing what cultivation is be Tier-1 knowledge?"

[No. The general information about cultivation is easily accessible. Would you like to hear it?]

"Yes please."

[Cultivation is the general practice of becoming a more perfect entity. All constructs have some flaws in them, and that causes their inevitable death, destruction, suffering, etc. Through cultivation, those flaws are resolved. Cultivation is different for every race, but all races can cultivate in some form or another. You may have heard about such methods in stories from your Earth, such as eating the Golden Apples of Immortality, drinking from the Well of Wisdom, creating the Great Masterwork, or ascending to Godhood. All of these tales were purposefully spread throughout the Human Realms to prepare the future Inheritors to the outside universe.]

A particular detail catches your mind. "When you say, perfect entity, what does that mean?"

[That is a Tier-1 question, would you like to access the Wisdom Realm with your limited Tier-1 access?]

"Tch. No." You drift off into thought. As you ask nothing, the Spirit remains quiet. So fantasy stuff is real, and I'll have to deal with it when I'm sent 'outside'. Damn Spirit, didn't even ask for my opinion. Am I going to have to deal with dragons? Vampires? Eldritch abominations? Hopefully not, but with how my current luck is going, it might not be a distant possibility. But it sounds like the Inheritance would help us out. There is also the matter of this 'merit' the Spirit mentions. It suggests I and other Inheritors will be able to return here and exchange goods or offer services, which is even more disturbing. It's like we're worker drones being sent out from the hive to scout.

What will you do now? Choose two.

AN: Welcome to Wandering Heaven and Earth! I got completely sidetracked from my other quest with a sudden desire to write some xianxia, and then spent 12 days fleshing out a universe I never knew I needed, and here we are! Do take note that, although this will be primarily a xianxia quest, some more western options might pop-up. This quest will also be (hopefully, pray to the dice gods) a universe-spanning quest, so get ready for some world-building and lore. And in standard xianxia fashion, there will also be lots of eating magical drugs and punching other people(?). Or not, depending on how you guys develop the character and what Path you choose to cultivate.

Also, any feedback and grammar checking would be appreciated.

Well, this came out of nowhere.

Still, I'll give it a shot.

We can always ask our Tier One questions once we know what's on the table, asking them when we know as little as we do is a poor choice, I think.

Voting will close in another three hours.

I should also mention that our Protagonist will ask questions beyond those you submit. They'll be determined by random rolls and circumstance. But you can pretty safely bet that most of them will be things the plans mentioned, so don't fret choosing between plans if you feel the questions are insufficient.

The first question bounced around in your brain, leaving white-hot patches of pain that seared your mind. In the ashes, images, sounds, tastes, thoughts long forgotten, all started popping up.

You remember a....a name. Your name. Wallace Lee. Male. Born and raised in the red, white and blue of the United States of America, a 'superpower' of your home world, Earth. He had just gotten his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, and was planning on getting a job for a while before getting his Master's. Last thing he remembered was laying in his bed in his cramped apartment after a party with his friends(which they had paid for, thank God), watching por- cough...he was seeking insipiration. Yep...insipiration. I wonder if I deleted my search history before arriving here, were ever "here" is.

Anyway, his parents were called....

...Why can't I remember the name of my own parents?

The corner of his lips tilted down and his brows furrowed. Now that I think about it, I can't seem to remember the name of my friends either. I certainly remember that I DID have friends, in fact, I was actually pretty popular, even if I didn't have the most...tidy of appearances. He could see their faces in his memory, but they were...blurry. He carefully combed through his thoughts, and found numerous other blank spots. The name of my high and middle school, the name of the area I lived in, and even the title of the last book I read are missing. The only things I remember are general info. Stuff I learned in school, skills, the geography of Earth, its history, etc. His already shaken mind descended into another cycle of panic and fear as he analyzed the situation.

[Detecting Heart Devil, initiating purging sequence.]

Calmness flooded into his heart like a gentle, warm tide, sweeping away all his worries and fears.

What was I worrying about again?

"Well, Guardian, I hope you don't mind me calling you that, what kind of threats will I face 'outside'? Will me being human be a problem? If there are any alien species out there, will they be hostile simply due to me being human?"

[Guardian is an acceptable moniker.]

Although their tone of voice didn't change, you got the vague feeling that Guardian was amused.

[The threats you will face will be varied in form. Describing every single possible one individually would take up an entire Heavenly Cycle. But be rest assured that I will not place you on Worlds that would immediately result in your death. You will be expected to face adversity, yes, but also thrive.]

[Your origin will also not be an obstacle. The Primeval left many descendants of impure birth outside, so humans are not a rare sight.]

"Impure birth? What does that mean?"

[Checking clearance level. Tier-3 access not found.]

Tier-3? How far do the tiers extend? And is Tier-3 more important than Tier-1, or is it more like 'sections' of knowledge than steps on some metaphorical knowledge ladder?

Deciding to set that aside for now, you continue asking, "You keep mentioning the 'outside', Guardian. What exactly is it? And what will happen to the people that aren't going out and still remain on the various Earths?"

[The 'outside' is, quite literally, what is outside 'here'; the greater universe beyond that of the 3,000 Worlds and the realms attached to it, such as this one. It is filled with an uncountable number of Worlds, dimensions, and constructs. Even in his prime, the Primeval couldn't find its limit.]
Roll to see if Wallace detects mental anomaly[d100]=11.
Well. It's the will of the dice gods.

[As for the Primeval's offspring that remain in the 3,000 Worlds, they will stay there until it is their turn to be sent out. Until then, the various Earths will be slowly changed to reflect the possible environments on the outside. This will prepare the greater population for their future and ensure survival.]

Now that caught your attention, "When you say changes, what exactly do you mean?"

[Checking clearance level. Tier-2 not found.]

"Tch." So information about those "impure" is considered Tier-3, but Tier-2 is about the 3,000 worlds, and Tier-1 is cultivation. What is the pattern there?

"How many Tiers of access to the Wisdom Realm are there? And what does each Tier represent?"

[There are 7 Tiers of access to the Wisdom Realm. Each one is dedicated to a specific subject. Knowledge of a Tier's subject is only accessible if you possess access to the Tiers below it.]

So it is like a ladder. But why?

"And that access can be bought with merits and materials. What exactly does that mean?"

[Although I power I possess is immense, and the resources the Primeval left behind great, they are not infinite. Merit is the currency of the Inheritance Realm, and its various sub-sections, and can be earned by doing tasks or traded with other descendants. You can also earn it by selling materials. But only those that can assist in cultivation or used in creation are worth considerable amounts.]

...which means that we have a way to return is confirmed. Is this how the colonists traveling to America felt, back in the 1600s?

"Is general information about the beginning of cultivation Tier-0 information?"

[No. Cultivation depends on one's race and chosen method. For an offspring of the Primeval such as yourself, there are an uncountable number of possible methods. You will learn more about it if you choose an Inheritance or access Tier-1 knowledge.]

Well. I can't think of anything else. Might as well get this over with.

"Could I see the Inheritances?"

[Of course. Please don't panic.]

Before he could ask what there was to panic about, the void below him burst into color.

It was like seeing a galaxy explode into existence right before your eyes.

Below him was now a literal ocean of shining items. Books, animal figurines, swords, guns, cloths, half-eaten food, a...(was that a dildo?)...never mind he must be seeing things, delicately carved bowls, and so much more were glowing with multi-color auras below his feet.

Reaching down, he grabbed a random book. Glancing at the title, he saw that it read [Making the Dead fight for You: The Idiot's Guide to Necromancy]. Voicing his thoughts out loud, Wallace asked, "I get the necromancy part, but what's up with the rest of the title?"

[The representations of the Inheritances have "labels" attached to them, so to speak. Physically contacting them will allow you "read" it. However, due to the nature of the "labels", each Inheritor sees them differently. What you perceive is your interpretation of it.]

Wallace blinks. Huh. I got a strange sense of humor.

He let the book go to float in the void and started touching anything near him. Every time he came into contact with an Inheritance, a string of words would magically appear in his mind's eye as a description. Neat.

[How to Tame your Dragon: Dragon Subduing Scripture], [My Kung-fu is Better then Yours: Nine Swords of Dugu], [Embrace the Rainbow: Sunflower Manual], [Hitchhiker's Guide to Astral Magic: School of Star Sorcery], [How to Forge a Ring to Rule them All: Imperial Smith Technique], [Let There be Light: Golden Crow Demon Bloodline], [Garry and the Philosopher's Stone: Seed of the Masterwork], [101 Funny Curses to Use on Your Enemies: Coven Witch Curse Rituals], [Slapping People with Enlightenment; Diamond Sutra], [I, Have a Dream: World Rebellion Technique], [Za Warudo: Celestial Hourclock Art], [Deus Vult: Empyrean Lightning Breath], [Six Hands are better than Two: Asura Reincarnation], [How very Punny: Sword-Words Scripture], [DEATH TO FURRIES: 10 Forms, 9 Transformations, One Voice], [All Dogs go to Heaven: Wolf Emperor Mantle]...

Title after title flashed in Wallace's mind, but not a single Inheritance that he picked up seemed to click with him. Oh, they were all exceptionally powerful, that he could sense easily, but never did he feel a sense of rightness. It was almost like they were rejecting him. As he combed through the oddities, he got the feeling that he wasn't the one choosing them, but rather they were judging him.

Oh. He stopped. I'm such an idiot. Guardian said each one of the three million Inheritors was carefully chosen. It would make sense that one of the criteria we needed to fill to be chosen was an affinity with an Inheritance. Which means, at least one of these is suited for me, and Guardian knows which those are.

"Guardian, could you only show me the ones that would accept me?"
The higher the roll, the more "yang" it is. The lower, the more "yin".
Heavenly Affinity[d100] = 86. 86 to 90, Stellar Affinity.
Earth Affinity[d100] = 58. 55 to 60, Blood Affinity.
Mortal Affinity[d100] = INVALID. Automatic 30 to 35, Ink Affinity.

The void stayed silent. Wallace got a little nervous. Was my guess incorrect? Are we actually meant to manually comb throu-
Number of Perfect Matchs[d10]= 4.
[Out of three billion inheritances, I have isolated 427 that would accept you. Out of those 427, I have found 4 that will bond to you 100%.]

You have reached the moment of fate. What will you choose? Pick one.
What School of Cultivation[d8] = 1, Immortal. Affinity[d7] = 1, Stellar+Blood+Ink.
[] [Happy Little Accidents: Heavenly Illumination Bloodline] - What is a painting, when not painted? A white canvas. What is the World, when not shone upon? A black canvas. A blueish-purplish orb, with a single red drop hovering in the center. When you touch this inheritance, old memories of you spending hours staring at a blank canvas light up. You remember the moments you spent searching for inspiration, your thoughts grasping at straws, seeking that perfect image. Your stare some more at the canvas. What can be done with a white sheet? You close your eyes. In the darkness covering your sight, you see what you desire. Finally, inspiration. Your memories take a sudden shift. Your eyes are still closed, but you paint. You don't feel your hands move, but colors appear. You open your eyes, and the painting is there, shining in swirls of celestial blood. A blink of the eye, white canvas to black, black canvas to white.
What School of Cultivation[d8] = 8, Eldritch(Demon). Affinity[d7] = 3, Steller + Blood.
[] [Notice Me, Lovecraft-Senpai: Calamity Star Demon Diagram] - The Moon, ever-faithful in its Imitation. The Sun, ever-shining in its Glory. The Stars, ever-plentiful in their Legions. The Heavens, forever hungry from Above. A strange picture of geometric shapes and splashes of color. When you touch this Inheritance, old memories of you star-gazing with your father on the back of his truck twinkle in the blankness of your mind. You remember tracing out the constellations, making up stories for each arrangement. You also remember the moment your father says that one day your sun will expand to devour the earth and the stars explode into fine dust and wreck everything around them. How we're all so small in the end. Your memories take a sudden shift. You're standing on the surface of an ocean, the night sky above you. Or perhaps the sky was below you, and you were looking at the ocean, it was hard to tell. But each star seemed to glow with a reddish light, and each one seemed hungry. Wait, stars aren't meant to blink, are they?
What School of Cultivation[d8] = 3, Devil. Affinity[d7] = 4. Blood + Ink.
[] [Bendy and the Cultivation Cult: Ink-Devil Bloodline] - The Blood as Ink, the Skin as the Brush, the Mind as the Grindstone, the Heavens and Earth as Parchment, True Meaning as the Signature. Creation as Your Masterpiece. A paintbrush, with some reddish-black paint on the tip. When you touch this Inheritance, old memories of you practicing traditional Chinese ink painting surface up. You remember Countless hours of you and your friend trying to express something great with something little, staining perfection with emotion, motion captured in a moment of stillness. Your memories take a sudden shift. Your friend is no longer beside you, instead you are in a valley. Black symbols cover the sky, white bamboo dances between plums of grey mist, and the earth is stained red. All creation, expressed in monochrome blood.
What School of Cultivation[d8] = 7, Divine. Affinity[d7] = 3, Stellar(Sun) + Blood.
[] [Don't Look at the Sun or You'll Cut Yourself: The-Sun-Of-Blades] - Every War, under its Light. Every Murder, hidden by the Shadow. Every Blade, glinting in its Fury. Every Ray, a wrathful promise. A golden ring, with sharp blades sticking out like spokes on a wheel. When you touch this Inheritance, an old, hated memory surfaces. You were walking home one evening when a figure jumped out and started asking for some money. When you said you had none (You barely managing to scrape by those days), they started getting shifty. In the bloodred light of the setting sun, you could see the sharp glint of something metallic in their pocket. Acting quickly, you dashed forwards and managed to snatch it. The mugger didn't bother you anymore after that. Your memories take a sudden shift. You're holding the knife on a battlefield. Corpses and sand surround you. You catch a glimpse of your reflection in the knife, and it scares you enough to drop it. But the image stays with you. Eyes glowing with golden fury, hair scattered in metallic strands, a halo glinting sharply above.

As you stand on a Crossroads, do you have any final regrets? Choose one.

Is everyones cultivation techniques going to be so... referential? Is this isekai cultivator meme edition?

I think [Bendy and the Cultivation Cult: Ink-Devil Bloodline] or [Happy Little Accidents: Heavenly Illumination Bloodline] are the best.
Bloodlines always have interesting backstories and that can lead to things that work great with them, and powers involving art or creation can be very versatile.
Like the Painting the Mists books.
