Ugolino Reads About Megucas: Symmetry Diamond

Am I doing it right?

Anyway.

Yeah.

This seemed like a good idea, even if it's been done pretty well...So here goes.

Symmetry Diamond.

It's a sequel to Oriko Magica, a PMMM spinoff, and yeah if you're reading this, I'm going to assume you know what all this is.

Onwards, to gucas!

So! Volume 1!

Yuma has a cold. Totally. As conveyed by her cowering under the covers, cut and bruised, with the sort of thousand yard stare usually found near the end of war movies while her mom yells at someone (a police officer? social worker?) when he or she comes to ask about reports of abuse.

She slams the door in their face, grumbles about someone blabbing, then threatens to kill Yuma if she says anything to anyone.

...You know what? Getting eaten alive was too good for that woman. Save the Yuma. Hug the Yuma.

WELL WE'RE OFF TO A MAGICAL START, aren't we?

Cover art. Puella Magi Oriko Magica: Symmetry Diamond. Everyone's in casual wear and smiling and Kirika has her kitten toy from Oriko attached to her skirt because of course. Talk about tone shift with happy, uncut and unbruised Yuma though...

So Kirika's in a hurry as conveyed by her very vocal monologue to herself at the top of her lungs about how much of a hurry she's in and Running! sound effects.

Meanwhile, Oriko's amusing herself by predicting minor events for the next day or so. Precogs, not even once.

"Kirika will come back in a hurry!"

...Yeah, she didn't need precog for that one.

"Oriko! I got you a grief seed!"
"Thank you. You're just in time."

Why do I get the feeling they have a lot of conversations like this?

Oriko exposits in narration. Magical Girl, Kyubey contract, saw the FUTUREEE, contracted to kill Ma-

To kill Walpurgisnacht.

That's different. Wonder when this is set in the timeline? An early loop where Moemura didn't notice? Just parallel timelines?

Oriko apologies for leaving the fighting to Kirika while bobblehead Kirika pours herself some...drink while looking too adorable for words. Then she says how she's worried about Oriko, asking if she still can't control her predictions.

Oriko admits she can't...and looks worried. Uh oh. The precog looking worried. Never a good sign.

Oriko's precog has a minor filter problem. As in no filter...and as Kirika points out, clouding her gem fast from being constantly used that way. Meaning no magic for fighting.

Kirika is somewhat shaky about this state of affairs. Literally...as she remembers what happened last time.

Memory bubble. Kirika was fighting a witch...Oriko tries to cover her...but can't do it because she's out of magic. Nothing happens.

Oriko's huffy about Kirika bringing THAT up, and Kirika apologizes...but Oriko worries if they'll make it to Walpurgisnacht in the next two weeks.

Kirika says that she's sure she'll do it- that it's her they're talking about- and they have tea.

...Kirika likes syrup on her pancakes.

Sadly this idyllic state of affairs doesn't last very long...as someone throws a message saying "Die" in through the window. Kirika looks shocked and angry- while Oriko just closes her eyes sadly.

We jump cut to Oriko outside with a thermos- and yes, being adorable- while she ponders how Kirika'd scold her for going out alone if she knew, complete with chibi Kirika waving her arms frantically.

Symmetry Diamond confirmed for dorbs.

"I don't want to be alone at night."

...Jeez, even in adorbs...

And then we get a lovingly detailed series of panels of younger Oriko stumbling across her father after he'd hanging himself.

PMMM not even once.

"Maybe I can't control my magic because my heart is troubled. My wish was granted but have I changed at all? Am I still trapped?"

She hears a rustling, calls out...and then a wild Yuma appears!

She looks scared. Oriko beckons her over, giving her something to drink. Yuma asks why Oriko's there, she says she's looking at the moon...then admits that her mother told her not to come back. Yuma blames herself. They talk about being a good girl- Oriko was never scolded by her parents- actually what happened to OrikoMom?

"It's important to want to be good. But thinking of yourself as a good girl is just arrogance. People are born imperfect."

Anndddd not surprisingly, Yuma's response to this is ???????

Oriko, you're great, but come on.

Yuma thanks her for the tea and runs off, and Oriko decides to go home as it's getting cold.

"What an odd girl..."
Pot, buckethat kettle, or have you met?

Then Oriko gets a vision where Yuma's death at the hands of her mother is all over the news at some time in the future. She doesn't take this news very well.

And with that, we jump to a girl catching up with Kyubey, where she states it'd be a shame to let Mami keep a city with so much prey to herself, and Kyubey states that he's making lots of new magical girls...

Actually this might well be a Moemura timeline.

And she announces her intent to take over the world show all the new magical girls that she's stronger. Kyubey doesn't mind.

This is Sasa Yuuki our cackling villain of the week antagonist for Symmetry Diamond. She's definitely the weakest part.

Up next...fighting! Adorbs! Impractical outfits!

And more adorbs.

Symmetry Diamond part 2!

We open with Kirika basically telling Sasa to get out of the way.

With her outfit, that you might charitably call a spot-on banana cosplay, who can blame her?

Sasa comments that she's agile but that it's useless...because she can throw "servants" at her.

Cue title page, where Sasa's referred to as "the new assassin magical girl"...which is a bit much, I think.

Assassins generally are supposed to actually succeed in killing people, after all.

Oriko sits and ponders Yuma. She doesn't look happy.

And three NPCs show up to taunt Oriko over lunch, saying "she's studying to become a politician too, and that she'll be a splendid person- like her father".

Yeahhh...

Looks like YumaMom has competition for "most deserving to meet an accident by familiar" in this story.

Oriko's rebuttal is that the ringleader should stop playing around at night or she'll eventually "meet misfortune".

Yeahhh don't sass the precog.

And then Sasa shows up, sympathizes in an ingratiating way, and offers lunch.

I'M SURE SHE HAS NO ULTERIOR MOTIVES.

Oriko did nothing wrong! -Sasa

"You're like a big sister, person I have never talked to before!"

Oriko checks her messages...and is worried, because Kirika HASN'T sent her a message over lunch break. Sasa pries in a creepy way and tries to get Oriko to tell her, but she brushes her concern off.

The two walk off. Oriko says she doesn't know why the NPC keeps trying to go after her, but that it's better that way than in the open. Sasa makes a creepy face, and cut to Kirika buried under rubble and rebar.

And now we catch up with Yuma! Hope you're all ready for horrible trauma!

YumaMom is on the phone with Yuma's grandfather.

Yuma asks to speak with her grandfather...and YumaMom throws her into a wall. And a pot falls on her head.

"It looks like something fell from the cupboard. No, it wasn't anything important."

YumaMom: Familiar fodder of the year, all years.

Oriko's really worried about Kirika not showing up...and starts to freak out in true PMMM fashion.

"Why? Why couldn't I predict that Kirika would be in trouble? All I predict are pointless things! I can't foresee what I want to foresee! I'm useless! So useless! I'm a failure as a magical girl! I don't need this kind of magic...I can't do anything...No one needs me!"

And she thinks of Yuma.

She snaps out of it and realizes she can't just stick around.

Unfortunately, she goes and contacts Sasa...and they find Yuma outside. Oriko comforts her and tells Sasa to get help.

Yuma tells Oriko she can't see a doctor...because a wellfare officer would come to their house and her mother would be angry.

...Welp. Child abuse. Fun.

Oriko tells Sasa to watch Yuma- she still has to find Kirika...and that's when Sasa decides to shoot her in the back with some kind of magic.

And then Kirika shows up in the nick of time, interrupting her attack. Oriko's still briefly mind-whammied...then sees Kirika and snaps out of it because of course.

Sasa and Kirika exchange some trash talk.

That outfit is still stupid in black and white.

Yuma is confused as Oriko and Kirika get ready to fight, and Sasa chews the scenery, cackling.

And Sasa goes full Pokemon trainer and summons witches.

Cliffhanger.

So yeah, Sasa's two dimensional, but nice to see some Oriko issues, Yuma's adorable as always, and Sasa works as a 2 dimensional villain of the week who wants to take over because reasons.

Symmetry Diamond part 3/finale!

Also a picture of the killer banana peel:

Anyway, part 3.

Oriko at her mother's funeral.

Well, that explains that part.

She's not crying.

>It's good that she's so professional but isn't it disgusting how she isn't crying?

Wow, PMMMverse people are kind of assholes, aren't they?

"I won't cry. For my mother, who died the the middle of pursuing her dream, or my father, who works hard for this town. I don't care if I'm not childlike in their eyes. I'll become a fitting daughter for the Mikuni family."

Welp. Issues.

Cover page. Yumacute and Oriko without her buckethat.

"Did I surprise you? My magical power is brainwashing!"

Oh for god's sake, she's giving a supervillain rant.

Cue exposition about how she doesn't like people smarter, popular, richer, or simply greater than her. So she wished to force absolute obedience on those who are better than her.

Oh, for crying out loud, Kirito called, he wants the edgelord act back.

Not a bastion of intellect, this one.

Anyway, she's STILL cackling about being a magical girl that has pet witches. She's going to run out of scenery to chew at this rate.

Kirika asks if her witches ever hurt humans.

Sasa goes "lol who cares, it's not about our mission, nothing else matters".

And Kirika rushes her, mercifully ending her villain speech as the two tumble away, Oriko getting intercepted as she rushes to help.

Okay that shot of Kirika from that angle was just gratuitous.

Anddd Kirika pins her, tells her she's nothing by herself and tells her to order her witches to repeat.

Our story villain, ladies and gentlemen. Taken down by a tackle.

Kirika asks her if she wants to lose her neck. This shows she's not Oriko Magica Kirika, who would probably have separated her head from her body at this point.

Sasa starts sobbing and apologizing.

Kirika's flustered and replies to the obvious feint with "Well, if Oriko says its alright, guess I don't mind. I'm really bad with girls like her..."

And promptly gets sucker punched by a pet Witch. Kirika. Adorable killing machine, but really, really easy to fool.

Sasa gloats as Kirika's dangled upside down, demanding she fight properly...then mentions Oriko and that she knows she can't fight.

"I've done my research. I know Mikuni Oriko is trash that can't hurt a fly."

...

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is rebellion Mami and 10 is "I don't need grief seeds anyway", that's an 11 in terms of bad ideas.

Kirika goes quiet, Sasa leans in to gloat, taunting about how long Oriko will last...

And Kirika flips out on her, furious about what she said and claiming she can't forgive her. Sasa points out she's tied up upside down.

Kirika is blown free by Oriko, and hops down.

Sasa looks like she's seriously reconsidering her life choices as she demands an explanation for this blatant deus ex machinia and orders her minions to attack.

Oriko replies with dakka in the form of orbs (oracle ray)

Kirika tells her she's made a mistake- that Oriko has potential but that her fortune telling magic is too much for her so she usually doesn't use her magic in battle.

Gee, someone didn't do their research...

Sasa calls bullshit, asking where Oriko got her power from...and Oriko replies Sasa gave it to her. As she cleanses her gem with grief seeds...from Sasa's pet witches.

Oops. :D

Oriko and Kirika stare her down. She does not look happy...and neither do they.

"Yuuki-san, for the sin of going after our lives, and hurting Kirika, how shall we have you atone?"

Sasa freaks out at Oriko's potential and how things have gone downhill, looking for a way to get away...then decides to use Yuma as a human shield.

Oriko's still lecturing her about how terrible she is...and tells her that the Witches she's been using as tools are the eventual fate of magical girls.

Sasa does not take that news well either.

Scene break. Kirika tells Yuma to forget what she saw and that no one'd believe her, and Yuma meekly agrees.

Kyubey shows up, comments Sasa underestimated them, and complains about them killing her.

Oriko points out she killed herself instead- cue panels showing her freaking out over the idea of becoming a Witch and smashing her gem. Oh no. Sadness.

Yuma shows up, Kyubey tries the whole "make a contract" routine...and Oriko lasers him. :D

Oriko says Yuma's a good kid, goes after her...and asks her why she hasn't asked for help when she came here to run away from her mother. She says nothing will change if she doesn't say anything...and Yuma breaks down.

So yeah, Yuma's father ran off, everyone ignores the child abuse, and Yuma sobs about how she's afraid of everyone and hates herself.

Oriko consoles her and tells her she doesn't need to be a good girl for everyone. That she is who she is and she should become someone she wants to be.

"Don't become like me."

Oof.

Next scene is Oriko and Kirika wandering around town. Oriko can control her magic now, and comments on how it might have been best for her to use her magic wholeheartedly.

Kirika's worried about if it's proper for someone from an upscale school like Shirome to be seen with her. Oriko waves her off, saying that she's her only partner and wants her to open up. And giddy Oriko looks hilariously strange, in a good way.

And as the two plan to eat the "world's biggest parfait together"...

Yuma's seen walking off with her grandmother and grandfather while food shopping, with them doting on her. Oriko called them and got her away from her abusive mother.

Yuma and Oriko exchange happy glances, and the news is about the clear, happy weather as Kirika and Oriko walk into the crowd.

Overall, Symmetry Diamond is a pretty good read. Lots of fluff, some character backstory- mostly for Oriko, while Kirika was fleshed out in the original manga. We get some of the details of Yuma's backstory.

Sasa is a weak villain but she's not really the focus so it works out.

The art here's mostly better than Oriko Magica too, so that's a plus.

Overall, pretty good but not amazing. A decent sequel to a decent series.
