Training the Next Generation (and avoiding lawsuits) Magic School headmaster quest

[X]Help with Racing team practice.
[X]Get to know a random student (can be chosen more than once)
[X]Listen in on rumors around the school
[X]Personally train to increase mystic abilities.

As Calamitos was at something of a stall with his own research, you soon found yourself pulled into helping Dr Black with some medical experiments.

The one the two of you were working on at the moment? Well...

"Are you sure we need a whole live chicken for this?"

"Yes. If we tested on anything smaller the rotting cures would spread to quickly for me to see if the new cure works."

The 'rotting curse' as it was called in laymens terms, was a special type of dark magic that as the name suggests, causes rapid decomposition on living tissue.

Officially it's supposed to never be used ever. In practice generally it was overlooked so long as it wasn't being used in tandem with/for other criminal activities such as murder and the use wasn't blatantly public and showy.

You carefully strapped the test chicken down and quickly jumped back so the good doctor could cast the spell.

"corrumpite carnem malam"

She cast it quickly and without passion.

You watched the chickens leg turn a disgusting shade of black as Dr Black pulled out a syringe and stabbed it into the birds thigh.

It did nothing.

Within minutes before the both of you was a barley held together chicken skeleton.

"Back to the drawing board."

"Hmm."

"Yes?"

She turned to you.

"Have you considered mabey talking to Calamitos about this?"

"I thought I made my thoughts on that abomination quite clear."

Irritation crept into her voice.

"Yes you did, but if there was anybody who could be an expert at dealing with decay, it would be him."

She looked away silently.

"Just food for thought."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Alright everyone! Come on down!"

You called, signaling the team back to group level to listen to you more closely.

"Now, you've all done really well. And I say without hesitation that I'm quite proud of our little team."

This got a light cheer out of the kids.

"Alright simmer down. So anyways, after the break racing season will officially begin, meaning you'll finally be competing in real races against other schools!"

"YES! FINALLY!" Tai called, pumping his fists in the air.

"Yeesh man! I'm excited too but ya don't need to be so loud about it." Lewis admonished, holding his ears in clear mock pain.

"Now, now. Tai can't help being indoor voice challenged." Alexander added in with a small smirk.

Kairi burst out laughing while Lidia tried to hide her giggles behind her hands as the short blond soon found himself trapped in a headlock by his taunted teammate.

"Alright team! Rest up but stay sharp!"

"Yes ma'am!" Was the chorused response.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a good bit layer that day that you found the usual enchanted sky obstacles the team uses for practice back up with a crowd seemingly flying through them.

Of course cursory further look around the area soon found the cause was actually one Lidia Salvi, who seemed to be puppeting what, to your eyes upon a second glance, seemed to be a crows corpes.

You walk up to her. "Hello Lidia, what're you doing?"

She quickly turns around startled. The bird falling from the sky lifeless thanks to her broken concentration.

"A-ah, Headmaster! S-s-sorry for taking the equipment out without permission!"

She replied, her face as red as her hair.

"Relax, your not in trouble, let me guess? Necromancy homework?"

"N-no, extra credit. Mr Calamitos said I was far enough ahead that the main homework would just amount to busy work..."

"Really? That's impressive."

"Not really. His class is mostly basic things and intro for people who don't already know anything..."

"Oh? So you have experience in necromancy?"

She looked away nervously
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ok! You didn't hear this from me, but appearantly Star Beard is actually the Merlin and just changed his name so no modern mages would relize!"

"Dude, that's dumb even for you..."

Nothing to report.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
You decided to expand on your previous maze training with a little end of semester surprise test.

The goal?

For the students it's get to class on time when the whole school's inside is cloaked with layered illusions.

For you it's maintain such am exhaustive spell till the end of the day.

You passed. About half the students didn't.

Question Lidia further?

[ ]No, leave her be

Little secret
[x]Yes
-----------------------------------------------------------
You give the redhead a kind smile.

"It's alright Lidia, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to. I'm just genuinely curious."

She shifts awkwardly in place before saying

"I've been doing necromancy for a few years. I found an old journal by chance that had some necromancers old research notes and just just of taught myself..."

"That's quite impressive. The raising of the dead is a fairly intricate art and being able to self teach it is undeniably an achievement!"

Lidia blushes as she replies "I guess. But...:

"But?"

"Please dont tell my parents!"

You raise an eyebrow "Why?"

"My...my mom's a mundane. She's in the loop and knows about magic in a general sense but she never really stopped being put off by it. She loves me and dad but outside of housework help and what not she's mostly too faint of heart for alot else. Heck she barley let's me ride my broom!"

"And necromancy can be considered off putting even to other magic users..."

She nods vigorously.

"I understand. Don't worry your secret-"

You conjure an illusion to make it look like your are literally zipping your lips shut with a zipper.

"Thank you."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alrighty! Next up a small interlude.

Interlude 1: Teachers
Olga Splinterina was currently staring down Star Beard. Holding her fellow educator at blade point with one of her potion prep knives.

Olga was a woman of pride, despite what some would say.

She prided herself on her dedication to classic witch tradition despite how others may laugh at and mock her for it.

She prided herself on her skills and undeniable work ethic in getting where she was today.

She prided herself on (in her opinion at least) earning some respect from the stern vice headmaster.

But more than anything else?

She prided herself on keeping certain tasts of her's a secret.

Which was why when Star Beard surprised her in her personal quarters without knocking to find her singing along with Moonlight Densetsu while doing a little dance things...

Escalated a bit quickly to say the least.

"Tell anyone about this and I'll choke you with your own stupid fake beard!"

The man simply gave a stupid cryptic grin.

"Closing the door might be a better way to keep this quiet then threatening me."

Realizing that he hadn't in fact closed the door behind him, the witch bolted away and closed it with a slam.

...and found Star Beard had in that time moved to her seat and had just un paused the device she's been streaming on.

She marched over to him only to pause when he pulled out of seemingly nowhere a bag of popcorn kernels, called out

"Nobis convivium!"

Nigh Instantly turning them to popcorn propper before offering her the bowl and turning back to the screen.

Olga decided the rest of the day frankly could have been worse.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Joan Halvorson had seen alot of beasties in her day.

"HEHEHEHEHE!"

This thing she was wrasslin in the library right now though? It was a first.

it was blob like in a lot of ways, covered in tentacles with talons at the tip and a fang filled mouth.

Her hand's wire form attempted to keep it still, but the dam thing was just to slippery.

It lashed out with a wild strike of one of it's talons which she narrowly dodged resulting in a visible gash in the floor.

It looked to be winding up for another blow when-

"Yzmrhs"

Craftlove came forward calling out some sort of incantation causing it to dissappear then and there.

"Few! That was close. Thanks, but what was that?"

Joan turned to her coworker. Wiping sweat from her brow as her prosthetic returned to hand mode.

"A star vampire. One of my more advanced students somehow got it into his head that summoning such a thing was a good idea to earn extra credit."

Came the man's ever emotionless reply.

"Really? And what'd you do to it just now?"

He shrugged

"Banished it back to whence it came. Nothing more."

With that he suddenly walked off.

A bit perturbed by the rude exit, she began to make her way out of the library only to be surprised by him standing there holding a cup.

"A cup of Tea for your efforts?"

She took the offerd cup a bit awkwardly but smiled.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ming Xu was regretting a number of life decisions at the moment.

In particular? Agreeing to a light physical spar with the cook Hayashi.

As was evident by the wheezing sound he made as her muscular arms squeezed around his neck and held him in place.

"You give?"

He heard her call. It had seemed so simple on paper play around with her a bit in his dragon form like a hatchling with there food letting her think she could win before pinning her under his massively superior weight.

That plan had fallen apart the moment she jumped up high enough to look him in the eyes after he transformed and punched him square in the snout.

So here he was, contemplating which was the lesser evil between admitting he was weaker than a human or letting himself be squeezed unconscious by said human.

In the end he decided to tap out with his claw promoting her to finally release him.

"Phew! Great warm-up, game for best two outa three?"

She asked wiping some light sweat off her brow and unknowingly putting fear into a being that had existed before her great grandfather.

Fear and...something else Ming was in no mood to unpack.
-----------‐-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dr Black crinkled her nose under her mask in abject disgust as she stood besides that thing.

It was looking over her formula for the rotting curse cure.

Eventually it put it down and turned to her.

A well thought out solution. However have thou considered adding vampire marrow?

"No, why?" She responded tersly.

Because vampiric matter is dead yet un rotting, so-

Her eyes shot wide open

"It should help counteract the affects of a cures strong enough to induse rotting in living flesh!"

The two spent hours going over adjustments and additions.

And when she returned to her quarters?

...Well she still vomited at the thought of what she just spent several hours interacting with and still bathed herself very thoroughly.

...But not as much so as she'd thought she'd need to when the headmaster first suggested such a collaboration.

So, thoughts on this little interlude, was it any good?

Home is where the heart is
You stand outside your home, with the break between semesters it was an opertunity to get a more prolonged time outside Ignis Fatuus and unwind.

So, where is Henrietta Young's home?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Choices!

Where do you stay?
[ ] A small apartment in one of the local supernatural districs of Japan. Still in the center of the mystic.

[ ]A unassuming mundane home. Nice for taking a break.

[ ]You mostly live in the academy, but you will visit and stay with some family.

P.S sorry if this was a comparatively spartan update.

Yokokami was a small urban mystic neighborhood in Tokyo, hidden in-between back alleys with the highest grade illustrations available, inhabited by various magic users and none humans who enjoy mundane conveniences but enjoy having an area where they can walk around as themselves.

You casually stroll down the street towards you own apartment here when-

"Eep!?"

Your suddenly tripped up and end up on the ground.

"Damnit you two! How many times have I said be careful where you play?"

Looking up your met with the sight of a pair of fox cubs who has apparently run under your feet and tripped you, being scolded by an older multi tailed Kitsune who proceeds to turn to you

"My apologies Young-San."

You shake your head and get up dusting yourself off.

"Hehe, it's fine miss Hajime. Kids will be kids."

You pet the two little ones and bid your neighbors goodbye as you make your way into your apartment.

It's nothing particularly nice or flashy, in fact if anything it's kinda cramped. Still, it's home.

And you were not alone in it

Oh they were certainly putting in an effort to remain hidden in the shadows of your apartment with magic. To a mundane or even a less talented mystic they'd probably be undetectable.

But to a once in a generation magician?

No dice.
--------------------------------------------------------
How to handle this?
[ ] Dispell the illusion to reveal them and call them out on the spot
[ ]Act like you don't notice them and go about things as if normal while subtly observing and awaiting there move
[ ]Subtly entrap them in a far more advanced illusion of your own, though this will take a bit and has the possibility of them noticing and acting earlier

You stretch and yawn with a relative casualness while slowly working through a none verbal illusion spell.

You can't help but smirk as you sense it setting in.

These past few months you've so rarely gotten to flex your capabilities.

It's one thing to walk around invisibly. This? Is to truly play with the mind

Your would be attacker moves through the apartment and stabs you straight in the back with a jewl encrusted dagger.

Or at least that's what he sees.

In reality? He hasn't taken a step.

"AAAAAHH!"

...and there are the horrified shreeks of 'his own worst nightmares ripped from his subconscious by the spell' stage of the illusion.

Music to your ears.

Once you have him restrained on his knees you at last drop the spell leaving a sobbing man in a black hood at your feet.

"Alright, who are you and why are you trying to kill me?"

"I-i-i sseeeeek th-the knoooowwerrr!"

He screeched while writhing on the floor.

You raise an eyebrow abd stepped on his back, pinning him down.

"And who is that?"

"H-h-heee born b-beyond!"

You raise an eyebrow "Craftlove?"

"kn-knowledge is ooouuurrrs! Not to be given!"

"Ours?"

He just continued to maniacally blubber on.

Interesting...

Obviously you'll need to ask Craftlove about this.

But first, what to do about your guest?

You casually stroll through the the school grounds and had just finished locking your prisoner in a empty classroom and assigning some golems to Gaurd the door when your met with a face you were just about to go looking for,

Mr P.H Craftlove.

"Mr Craftlove! What are you doing in the school during break?"

"I came to speak to you. It has come to my attention that certain elements have made their moves and you would likely enjoy some answers."

Came his quick and curt response.

You reply with a crossed arms and a raised eyebrow

"Ok then, care to explain what you might know about babbling weirdos trying to kill me in my apartment?"

"That, is a rather long story, but do you remember what I told you when you interviewed me? About how the good Mr Lovecraft gained access to information that was beyond his comprehension that became his inspiration? Of the information's will of it's own and it choosing to take on human form to satiate it's own sense of curiosity the mundane writer unknowingly sparked."

"You've mentioned it, yes." You reply, nodding.

And it wasn't too hard to believe. Physical embodiments of and/or mortal forms for concepts of one stripe or another were far from unheard of, it was essentially what elementals were.

"I am to put it simply, arcane, dark and otherwise forbidden knowledge given 'human' form. I came into existence via implanting myself into a mortal woman's womb and growing the old fashioned way. When this body was a child of a decade old a member who belonged to the same group as the man who attacked you kidnapped me. They call themselves the 'guardians of knowledge' but they are no such thing, they're a cult who seem convinced only they are 'worthy' of the knowledge and lessons I can give. In short they're a bunch of self important madmen."

"And you didn't think to warn me of them why?"

He shrugged

"I assumed I killed almost all of them in the process of finally escaping and the months before our first meeting were spent removing what I thought was left of the group dispersed and in hiding."

"Well it seems you were wrong."

He nodded

"Yes and for that I apologize. But now we have the present problem to deal with. Finding a way to keep an eye out for and counteract them."

You nod and begin walking side by side with Craftlove

"Before you say anything, me simply leaving Ignis Fatuus would not solve anything or leave the students and our coworkers any safer. They're a group as stubborn as they are delusional. They'd likely convince themselves you simply did what they did and locked me up somewhere secret and secure. In that scenerio things would only get worse."

"That's...unfortunate. Any ideas of what too do?"

"I'll add what I can to the castles rudimentary defenses. See if we can get Madame Akari and Calamitos to assist in that regard. Other than that as it stands in a straight fight most of the 'guardians' as they call themselves are roughly even, if perhaps slightly above the academy's golems. Still the leaders who managed to pry the most information out of me during my imprisonment could likely hold there own with most of the professors in single combat. Though I am quite certain I ensured all of their deaths."

"Alright. That makes sense I suppose."

"And I take it I can leave the extracting of further information to you?"

You smirk and don't say a word.

The mind was an easier thing to bend the more experience one acquired. And though young by many mystic standards, you were by no means inexperienced.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok that's it for now but I PROMISE next update there will be choices!

Back to school
Unfortunately as it turned out, the guardian sent to claim your life was something of a disposable doop. Even after several hours of intensive interrogation and illusion based mental manipulation it seemed he truly had little of value to offer in terms of knowledge.

On the bright side the academy seemed to be more intensively protected than ever, the stone walls at various places had different sigils carved into them from Calamitos and Craftlove while Madame Akari put up various protective charms and seals.

This all eventually lead up to the first day of the second semester.

You sat down at the staff table for breakfast that morning with the others.

Olga seemed a bit groggy and was more poking at her food than anything else. Dr Black and Calamitos were actually making something resembling small talk, Madame Akari and Ming Xu were having a polite conversation and Star Beard and Joan were just stuffing their faces.

Craftlove caught your eyes and nods to you.

You stand over a operating table alongside Dr Black and Calamitos. If all goes according to plan the most recent test of the cure for the rotting curse may prove successful.

You carefully place a confused clucking chicken on the table and step back as Calamitos quickly casts the spell

corrumpite carnem malam

As soon as it hits and you see the hints of blackness begin to grow on the avian test subject you lunge forward and inject it with the latest interaction of the cure!

And...

It stops!

"Yes! It works now!"

Not quite

The resident Litch suddenly chimes in. You look to see the bird, while still very much alive and clucking. Now dragging along it's blackened and decayed foot.

"Hmm, so it seems we have a treatment to stop the curse from further spread when in effect but not something able to reverse the curses affects itself..."

Dr Black muttered, writing some notes on a pad. While you'd been in charge of the chicken itself and it's injection and Calamitos handled the spell itself, she had been standing back analyzing the affects with a keen analytical eye.

"Still, a wins a win."
------------------------------------------------------------------
Getting back into the racing team post break had been a mixed bag.

Tai and Kairi had obviously been practicing over break and thus took to being back in the school flight coarse like fish to water.

Lidia was clearly a bit rusty but she readjusted well enough and Lewis needed a bit more of a kick in the pants but he got back in order eventually.

And then there was Alexander...

He'd been fresh eyed a bushy tailed seeming enough first day back. But he quickly seemed to be slipping into old habits...

Berating teammates for minor things, trying to run the practice like a task master. Ultimately you had to pull him aside and politely remind him of the two of you's talk last semester.

He seemed to calm down enough after that but...

Well given that this behavior only returned after he came back from being home over the break.

Well for now it's just speculation and you probably shouldn't poke your nose into it.

For now, your getting your kids ready for there first inter-school meet!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The rumors around campus seemed to mostly be the usual fair.

Who had a totally real girlfriend over break. Who came back from break later than the rest and for what mysterious reasons(Sick/skipped first day back you would know)

Overall pretty standard. That was until-

"I'm telling you! The headmaster had some guy locked up here over break!"

"Dude, I really doubt that. Where'd you even here that?"

"Antonio says he got it off the golems!"

"Wait those things can talk!?"

This catches your attention, as while the golems in fact, can't speak they can give out information.

Specifically they can essentially be hacked like a mundane computer and have what there simple magic approximations of brains have recorded.

Still, there supposed to have solid protection spells to prevent just that!

Seems you'll have to this Antonio...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With a clear threat now more present you decided to go back to training with Madame Akari for combat casting.

And let it never be said she makes it easy

"Seinaru nagareboshi no yō ni!"

You dash desperately from impromptu cover to impromptu cover as a shower of shining energy bolts crashes down around you.

As you run you attempt to craft a slightly more complex illusion to throw her off.

"Gaibu kara moeru seinaru hikari!"

This was easier said than done you contemplate as your adrenalin races and your focus is split to avoid being flash fried.

Still, you've just about got-

"Taiyō ryū ga hōkō suru!"

-it as your whole body is consumed by a massive flaming serpent construct.

Ironically your less worried about the pain and more about the lecture on everything you did wrong when you wake up.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
First step on finding what you can of the GoK was a matter of sending out feelers to your supernatural freinds and neighbors if they might have heard anything and asking Madame Akari about it post her kicking your ass.

"Hm, I hate to say it but we seem to be coming up blank in my channels."

"Then we really are at an impasse, after all you know this area way better than me..."

"Well...there might be one way to get the information we need..."

The older woman states, though she looks anything but happy about it

"Oh really? How?"

"The Yakuza."

She practically spits out.

"They have a strangle hold on all less than savory mystic activities that happen locally. I don't like it, but they may just be your best bet"

Antonio as it turned out, was one Antonio Arreola, a scrawny Latino boy who took to hanging around the the corners of Ignis Fatuus's hallways.

He startled lightly as you suddenly appeared in front of him via a dropped invisibility spell.

"Gah! Miss Young?!"

"Hello Antonio, I'd like to speak with you about you getting into the Golems."

"G-golems? I don't know anything about them!" He lied, badly.

"Relax kid, if your willing to explain how you did it you won't get in trouble, I promise."

He scratched the back of his head and let out a light chuckle

"Hehe, I honestly didn't think it would work I swear! It's just a silly little trick my abuela taught me!"

"Oh really?"

"Yeah, Golems are kinda my family's specialty..."

"I see, mind showing me this 'little trick'?"

And so you spent the rest of the afternoon going through the various work arounds for Golem security he knew and with the promise of no punishment Antonio was more than happy to add what extra defensive tricks he knew.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Meeting with the mystic branch of the local Yakuza was a suprisingly speedy endeavor.

As it turned out, much as Madame Akari loathed them and everything they stood for, she apparently had something of a history with them. Having fought alongside their members from time to time in the event of a city wide spiritual threat reard it's head in Tokyo in enemy of my enemy alliances.

Because of this, while she didn't like it and refused to use it out of anything less than necessity, she had pull with them and could get the two of you a meeting with the local family head. A oyabun Nakamura.

He was a rather fat old man, easily qualifying as morbidly obese. Mostly bald with some light white hair around the edge of his head and wearing a brown Hakama.

"So, you wish for us to look into these...guardians of knowledge. As a precaution to. Protect your school."

He spoke chopily in a voice that clearly indicated a lifetime of smoking.

"Yes sir" You say bowing lightly

"Hmm. Of course you. Understand. That our protection in any formal does not come cheep."

"Cut the crap Haruki! You know as well as I do that any kind of wide scale child death at the hand of some upstart cult in your territory would reflect poorly enough on you."

Madame Akari cuts in with a sharp tone. Though the old Yakuza seemed anything but fazed.

"Hehe. Feisty as ever. Aki!"

His eyes however soon gained a sharp edge.

"But. As you say. What is stopping us from simply. Making it our own buisness and dealing with it ourselves no information to you?"

"Because they brought the fight to us so we need to deal with them and not just leave it to the likes of you."

"Hahaha-cough-!'" he let out a more boisterous laugh that was quickly cut off with a coughing fit.

"Heh, fine. We'll inform you when we find. Something."

With your buisness concluded, you and Madame Akari were on your way.
