Nah, that's just the compersion. But I have to wonder, why revulsion and resignation? Aren't we tired of things going poorly? Don't we want to go apeshit?
Because it's always another fucking thing. "It's not how you get there, it's always the climb." But the climb never fucking ends, does it? It's always more lemons and it doesn't even matter if you liked lemonade before, because by now your fucking tired of the taste. Revulsion at the state of it all, Resignation to it's inevitability.

Most of these are my feelings, but i feel like i have seen that resignation in Mei before. Doesn't mean she won't go and crack heads afterwards... but she's still wheighed down by her chains. Why else would she try to break free?

2-15-1 Sweet Heart Body Shop
The place Kisaragi took Mei to was, it turned out, an auto shop some distance into downtown. It had obviously seen better days, though the concrete and various hookups seemed quite sturdy. Mei had seen such things before, of course, but a free-standing anything in the heart of Osaka stood out for its sheer lack of pretense. No living space above it, no glaring neon lights, no strange urban horrors. The only sign that this place was different from any other business on the map was the large sign, still lit like it was the 70's or something, proclaiming it the SWEET HEART BODY SHOP.
[Site discovered—]

Kisaragi looked up at the chain pulley, and nodded. A thick shackle hung ominously from where the chains were put up.
Around the side, a solid steel door opened readily to Kisaragi's key.
[Face Danger +Hard: 3+3 vs 5, 9 weak hit]

The smell hit her first— a smell a bit like fermented garbage, with overtones of alcohol and something else unidentifiable, and just a little bit of gasoline.

Mei's stomach turned with the smell of it briefly, but she avoided adding to the smell inadvertently.
[This place be NASTY. -1 Body, 4/5.]

The CHOKK of an industrial switch signaled that Kisaragi had found the lights. Mei squinted as her eyes adjusted to the light, and she discovered the source of the smell.

Slightly leaky hydraulic cylinders kept a large vehicle up on blocks. It looked like a smooth little short-range racer; the paint job looked nearly impeccable.

Everything else looked awful. Bags of trash were piled in one corner; with a paper note FOR BURNABLES DAY. A futon rested directly in front of the dilapidated counter, and the way to the garage was open. Above, a ferret run also connected to three rooms.

"Oi, Alfons! I'm home."

"Through the normal door? You're not forgetting your bike again, are you?"

"I'll lock it up in a second," Kisaragi replied, putting her helmet on the counter.

Mei paused and tugged on Kisaragi's collar. "When's burnables?"

"Uh. Good question. Hey, Alfons, when's burnables?"

"You should have said the code word!" Alfons shouted, spooked.
[Face Danger +Thoughtful+Detective: 3+2+1 vs 1, 5 STRONG HIT]

Mei paused. "— Ah, I know who you are now."

"— Eep."

"We've met before, I think," Mei said, in a sort of resigned tone that said this might as well be happening. "You're the ferret, right?"

Alfons was, indeed, the ferret, poking his nose out to sniff the air and sighing because he couldn't smell anything.

"So, when is burnables day?" Mei asked.

"It's tomorrow, but—" Alfons began.

Mei rolled up her sleeves. "Fine. I'm getting this done."

"— You can't just--" Kisaragi started.

"I'm not sleeping in this, and you shouldn't either." Mei shot back immediately, handing a bag to Kisaragi.

"I beg your pardon!?"

"If you must complain, think of me cleaning up here as paying my keep." Swirling the trash as if it were a casual satchel, Mei set off to the dump she passed on the way in.

Kisaragi stammered along behind her. Mei paid it little mind. She was not going to sleep in filth, and more importantly, she wasn't going to let Kisaragi continue to do so, either.

Yeah, that would put a damper on the other activities we had planned.

Mei huffed at Asura-chan's statement of the obvious. "This is where it goes?"

"— Well, yes," Kisaragi said, "But listen, it's not that simple."

"Do we need to sort your trash?"

Kisaragi blushed. "No! That's not it. It's about the garbageman, he's super strict."

"We'll be at it all night as it is," Mei said. "He can stand to have his pretty dump sullied an extra hour or two. And your neighbors will likely be glad to have it got rid of, too."

"Torioi I am going to be perfectly clear when I tell you that I don't have any neighbors."
[Face Danger +Thoughtful: 2+2+1 vs 2, 4 STRONG HIT]

The realization hit Mei just in time to pull Kisaragi to one side as lights came on in the alleyway.

The 'garbagemen', such as they were, were all exactly the same build, exactly the same height, exactly the same clothing, precisely the same vapid, smiling expression.

All at once they turned their flashlights to the pile of garbage, silently picked it up, and walked away.

"You see what I mean?"

Mei nodded. "What do I need to know?"

"If you see stairs down, don't take them."

"… This complicates things but we can't leave it forever."

"Can't we? Please?"

"Unless you've got some other idea for how to get rid of all that garbage, I'm afraid it's risking this or nothing."

Kisaragi sighed. "It would have been fine just leaving it, right?"

"Up until the moment you got sick. Or worse, Alfons."
[Test Your Bond +Heart: 6+3 vs 7, 10 weak hit]

"— Oh. Alfons."

"Just because you're both obviously magical doesn't mean you can't get sick," Mei said, nodding.

"Listen, can I explain Alfons's deal a little later?"

"Yeah, we've got our hands full as it is."
[Battle SHADE+Resolve+Sweet Shine+Asura-chan: 6+2+2+1 vs 4, 4 MATCH]

And so the two of them set out to depositing all the trash, and cleaning up the horrors that leaving your trash put up for nearly a year will do to the ground beneath a trash pile and the difficulties of avoiding what seemed more like a robotic patrol than actual garbagemen.

For a moment, Kisaragi pulled her into an alley, when she had missed the garbagemen behind her, and they were pressed together, and as the tension of the footsteps and the shining of the light threatened to give them away, Mei opened her mouth, and Kisaragi drew her close.
She felt Kisaragi's finger on her lips. "For shit's sake, stay quiet or I'll shut you up."

And in that moment the only thing Mei could think to say was "make me."

Kisaragi grabbed hold of Mei's shirt and pulled her in.

Mei found herself shocked to be on the receiving end of a kiss that felt like circling each other in the ring, like watching a rival move, your every attention arrested as the fear and the joy in equal measure surged through her. She pulled— Should she call her Rei, now?— She pulled her back just as close, arms around her. For once, Mei struggled to breathe.

The foot-steps had stopped, but Mei pulled Rei back in for another, the old task forgotten entirely in that moment.

Rei pushed Mei gently away. "Later. At. At the garage."

Mei nodded.

As Rei slipped away back towards the garage, Mei gently touched her lips.

Despite the swelling joy in her heart, Mei knew everything had just gotten a lot more complicated.

2-15-2 Bite Your Lip In Anticipation
Mei desperately told Asura-chan to calm the hell down as she tried to soothe her own jangling anxiety and the chains, ever-present, made themselves known again.

This was nothing. This had to be nothing.

She washed her hands and face for a second time. She couldn't afford Ichigo's parents finding out. She couldn't afford Ichigo finding out.

This had to be nothing. It had to stay nothing.

But how?

"Why do we care so much about them, again?" Asura-chan said, arms crossed.

"They're paying our bills," Mei replied. "Also, they can lean on the University. Also, I'm not abandoning my friend."

"We have literally more than we've ever seen off Enma."

"Contingent, I'll remind you, on our cooperation with the investigation to turn in our own parents to the death police."

"The same death police our parents worked for. Where's all that money?"

"For a start? Thunder Devil Dance Hall and Dad's workshop."

"Sure, sure, those are impressive and expensive, but grandma owned her house and the fields around it and Dad apparently traded favors with magical girls, that could build a lot of workshops right there." Asura-chan leaned against the sink, her eyes shining, her teeth having a distinctive glimmer that should have been possible only with very specific lighting and a lens designed for making that exact look. "If our parents made so much on death police investigations, we oughta be rich as a corrupt metsuke, where'd all that go? For that matter, what about the land grandma owned, what happened to that?"

… It was a good question, and one Mei didn't have a full answer for. "Do you think Chou stole it?"

"… Nn, it's possible. But if that's the case, I say steal back what's left and have done."

"Is this before or after murdering her?"

Asura-chan laughed. "Oooh, choices. Also I really hope I don't need to say this, but you should kiss her again."

Mei swallowed. "Are— Are you sure she'll be okay with it? Looking back it was probably just to shut me up."

"Kiss her and find out."

"… you're learning from me."

"We are the same person, after all." Asura-chan gave Mei a view of her cleavage by adjusting her lean. "Also, she's been pacing outside the restroom for five minutes."

Mei threw open the door and sure enough, there she was, surprised that Mei had come out so fast. "Havin' fun?"

Asura-chan's laugh almost drowned out Kisaragi's sudden reaction, caught like a deer in the headlights. "Uh— Well, I— I mean— I was just thinking that I shouldn't be touching food after all that cleaning without,"

"Ah. What do you have?"

[Face Danger +Thoughtful+Sweet Shine: 3+2+2 vs 5, 1 STRONG HIT]

What Kisaragi had was a portable stove and enough food and a pot, and Mei started turning into a dango nabe with the speed born of unfortunate long practice.

Well, no. She was perfectly fine with it, now she was… Here. Instead of doing it simply as a servant.

For a moment, all was complete silence, except for the ringing of the bowl as she cracked two eggs into what would become the main part of this particular hot pot.

She quietly set to chopping the onion, scallions, and the cabbage— some of the onion finely chopped indeed, the rest in big, thick rings. The cabbage just this side of wilting, she'd been lucky. Some carrots and daikon were carefully peeled and added to the vegetables, and bean sprouts were washed but largely left as-is.

With the same care, she turned to cutting the fish cake into something she could cook in the dashi.

She appeared satisfied for half a second, then hummed as she thought about the state of the fridge, which led her back to the fridge.

Mei felt a little guilty as she minced the pork as finely as possible— two lovely cutlets, both threatening to go bad, plenty of fat— and mixed it into the rice starch and eggs and finely cut onions and a little bit of ginger.

A moment's rummaging among the abandoned shelves turned up a small tasting dish, and into this she poured a little bit of the dashi from the simmering pot, which she then tasted.

It was the simple pleasures, wasn't it? The little things, even in a place like an abandoned garage, apparently some kind of secret facility.

But even here, she could make it smell and taste like home.

The ingredients, so carefully prepared and presented, went all into the pot, all at once.

Mei covered the pot, and only belatedly saw that Alfons was staring at the pot with what she could only assume was the ferret equivalent of drooling, and that Kisaragi Rei— No, no, too formal!— That Kisaragi was staring… At her?

"Um… I didn't get a chance earlier, but I did want to say. I. I have your answer. From earlier, I mean, in the Room of Animated Thoughts." Kisaragi laughed, all nerves and babbling. "And I wanted to say that yes, I'd be glad to date you, if you'll still have me."

The words caught Mei entirely by surprise. "I… Didn't quite realize I'd confessed to all of you, but I guess I did, just a little bit, didn't I?"

Kisaragi laughed again, watching Mei's careful expression.

It wasn't nothing. It. It couldn't be nothing. Mei felt her chains tighten as she tried to balance the fact that it had to be invisible with the fact that she was right. There. "Well then. We have about… six minutes before the soup is done. And the place is as clean as I can make it for now. I noticed the lounge had a couch?"

She nodded. "Along with my futon and a spare."

"— A spare?"

"I've had my share of guests. Desperate, mostly."

"Mm. Let me start the last course and I'll join you shortly."

"— Last course?"

"Yes. Something warm, I think. It's a little cold tonight."

In the end, she had to settle for using the plug-in rice cooker to prepare for a later zousui. Still, Mei set her alarm on the phone and came back into the lounge to sit on the couch next to Kisaragi. "So. You have no neighbors? I take it then you have an arrangement with the government of some kind."

Kisaragi tilted her head. "I mean, no one's willingly lived here since the 90's."

Mei blinked, and narrowed her eyes, and hummed. "So you mean that underneath us is—"

Kisaragi nodded. "Yeah. Technically, the JSSDF could tell us to clear out at any time they like, but… Well, I think the local commander is hoping that being my father's daughter will work out if push comes to shove."

A Planeta. Right under their feet. "No wonder the onmyouji out there doesn't like you much."

Kisaragi nodded again.

Mei hummed. "So, uh… You're not working for Alfons in the…" Mei struggled to come up with a way to say it that didn't feel corny to her and gave up. "In the 'warrior of love and justice' way?"

"Ah— No," Alfons said. "I was supposed to be a guide for one who could rise from their own ashes.

"I failed." And now Alfons washed themself anxiously.

Kisaragi winced. "I… I don't want to talk about Hino-sa right now, and I don't think Alfons does either."

"… Ah." Let it not be said that Mei couldn't read a room. She gently reached out her hand, and Kisaragi took it. "I'm sorry."

"Mmn." Kisaragi nodded. "It's been a few years, I'll be fine."

Mei held her hand regardless, and let Alfons hop up and sniff her casually.

"Forgive me for asking," Alfons said, completely ignoring the read of the room he'd already noted, "but… You are at a low point in your life, am I correct?"

"Still," Mei agreed.

Alfons sniffed Mei again, and hummed thoughtfully. "I shall be watching you with interest, I think. Yes, it will be quite interesting to see what choices you make going forward."

Tell the tube rat to stop sniffing me, would ya?

The smell of herbs and sweetness and pork dango and tofu filled the air. Asura-chan calmed down a little, as did Mei, with the memory of it. "I think it's about ready."

Alfons hopped back up on to the runs attached to the walls, and led the way out back to the counter. Kisaragi did not let go of Mei's hand, and produced two well-backed stools. Mei wasn't exactly sure from where. She suspected it was the same place the motorbike had come from.

The two of them sat on the same side of the counter, and Mei set out the bowls and the other dinner equipment. "Hm. This is some pretty good stuff…"

"A lot of it I scavenged from my old place," Kisaragi admitted. "But hey, you got yourself a genuine hotpot."

"And so I do." Mei doled out the broth and the dango, keeping a space for Alfons.

Alfons paused, and gently, gently, lapped at the broth, before finally looking directly at Mei. "You know. You keep your face very serious, but… You're actually quite hot-blooded, aren't you?"
[Make A Connection +Heart+Tangled Red String: 2+3+2 vs 3, 3 MATCH]

"So this is the magic of a talking animal?" Mei replied, hiding the feeling of being shot with an arrow from two hundred meters in the dark. "Interesting. I wonder what choices you're considering."

In all cases, Alfons will grant a bonus any time his being a ferret will help you, as well as any time he is present while Mei deals with fire, firebirds, and dragons. Each one will bring its own unique bonus to the table.

There was a brief pause, and then Alfons dooked and hopped quite happily. "Yes, I see."

And that was when there was a terrible sound, like the road outside was being shredded apart at a go.

Mei stole a look out the front window, where a flash of gold, the impression of wings of light, stood up amidst shredded tarmac, just in time for a beast of shadow, steel, flame, scales, to bear down without remorse. Shining in its chest was, unmistakably, a magatama.

Both Alfons and Mei looked over at the monstrosity, and the armored fighters facing it, and for entirely different reasons, shouted, "— Shit!"

Incredibly partial to Flamekeeper, because what better way to get rid of the chains than to melt them to slag? Honestly unsure about the Ryuuroid options except leaving them behind because fuck that noise. And I'm definitely going to write-in for Haru because I want to see more of her. :p

Hmm, as far as flamekeeper goes, I seem to recall something about our vows making our iron stronger but not doing anything for our flame. So maybe this will help balance us.

On the other hand, becoming a magical girl on the first date seems a little abrupt 😅

2-16 The Righteous Bow of Heaven's Displeasure
Three things happen in quick succession:

Mei vaulted over the counter and through the door in one smooth motion, phone already in hand, tapping on the contact for Raimoto Haru.

Alfons and Rei followed after with a speed that wasn't quite enough.
[Enter The Fray +Rapport+Flamekeeper: 5+3+2 vs. 7,9 STRONG HIT]

\And Mei intercepted the blow meant for Ichigo, shoes strained near to the breaking point, blue-white light shining on her, as she felt the burn of it on her skin.

It's hot, but nothing we can't handle, Asura-chan declared.

The little bastard's smirking,
Asura-chan noted, and Mei nodded. "— Oi. Whoever you are. You OK?"

Ichigo paused, then nodded. "It's, uh, Gold Dragon."

"Why am I not surprised?" The change in Rei's voice made Mei hesitate, but she was in control.
[Strike +Hard +Sweet Shine +Asura-chan: 1+3+2 vs 6, 5 weak hit]

But Mei did duck Rei's glaive, which struck the dragon… android… monster?— in the midsection and sent it skidding back.

"— Torioi, right? Stay out of this," Gold Dragon said.

"This place is dangerous. You should leave, too," Mei responded.

"That's not going to work out here," Gold Dragon replied.

Mei followed up with a sock to its armored gut, leaving a dent and herself shaking out her hand. "What gives?"

Asura-chan growled.

"Understood."

The Ryuuroid stepped forward, and swung.

Mei tried to back away from the strike, but her reaction time was simply not fast enough. Even a glancing blow was enough to be felt, hard.

"Torioi!

Just what she didn't want.

Still, that gave her a moment to think, even if she didn't particularly like the way she'd gotten it. It was no use dodging it, and with all the debris around, it had an infinite supply of weaponry— to say nothing of if the JSDF or the onmyouji got involved.

Rei was— Rei was lining up a shot. Alfons—

Alfons was on Mei's shoulder. "You'll never defeat it without taking its eye."

"The one with all the ridges?"

"No! The one on its chest!"

And with that one hint, the monster's weakness unfurled before her.

But—!

"
Sweet Heart! Left side!"

Gold Dragon nodded and pulled the Ryuuroid the other direction, giving Sweet Heart its blind spot, a fact she abused liberally to lodge her halberd in again.

Mei looked up and saw the three wounds were already closing, and the dent already correcting itself.

Direct damage simply wasn't going to work. The memory of earlier that day rose unbidden in her heart— 'Some things, you can't punch.'

A more careful strategy would be required to get it to give up its coveted Eye.
[Mei retains control, and learns something important… +2 Momentum, 10/10.]

"Dragon, back, now!"

Gold Dragon hopped back and watched claws rend only air.

Now, though, now it was Mei's turn.

"Let's see if I can open you up…" Mei looked to Gold Dragon. "With me!"

Gold Dragon beat aside one hand with a picture-perfect roundhouse, while Mei pulled it off-line on the other arm, aiming for where she would grab the lapel.

Instead, Mei was aiming for something she was sure Sakaki-senpai would tell her was absolutely illegal.

She reached in, grabbed what little hold of the shining gem she could get on the tips of her fingers, and pulled.

When this failed, she turned it into a vicious shoulder throw, cracking the pavement, revealing the hardened concrete beneath.

And that was when, from above, Raimoto Haru's arrow arrived like a thunderbolt, followed shortly by the rest of her, smiling that oddly serene smile. "Oh? And what's this you've called me to?"

"Hotpot and answers?" Mei asked.

"Ha, I suppose so." Raimoto pulled back the string of her long, traditional bow, and the space between string and bow crackled with purple-white lightning. "Shall we begin?"

"All right, let's open up this tin can." Mei let it get up— or rather, once again, her lack of real weight betrayed her as the Ryuuroid tossed her aside towards the trash cans.

Not that Mei was deterred in the slightest, turning her body so that she bounced herself off the wall instead.

"Haru, if that's lightning, I can use it-- try and get its side when we expose it. Dragon, Kuroneko, you're with me. Sweet Heart, White Crane, distract it for a second."

'White Crane' looked at Sweet Heart for a moment, and then— "Hey, uh, if we survive this, can we talk a bit later—"

"Save it." Sweet Heart smashed into it with what would be, on most other beings, a mighty, telling blow, here only useful to occupy its regeneration in useless things.

Similarly, White Crane slipped around it and jabbed multiple of his feather-daggers deep in its scales, only to have to evade it trying to back him against a wall.

"Dragon, we're going to expose its right flank to Haru."

Mei had to hope that Haru could see the weak point as easily as she did— something not guaranteed in the slightest.

Mei decided to get its attention back on her.

To do this, she slapped it in the face.

Even it winced, then turned its entire fury to her and only her.

Ichigo caught the left-handed swing. That left only the right arm and its tail to attack.

Mei nodded, and leapt, a jump kick at almost the same time, which was intentionally just that little bit too slow and clunky.

The right arm lifted, exposing it to Raimoto Haru's arrow.

Like a bolt from clear skies, the celestial arrow struck home, electricity coursing through its body, changing the shape of the metal within through the heat.

It was only a crack, one Dragon exploited by rearing back and letting loose flames from body and mouth.

The armor warped and peeled back.

"Down to us, now."

Mei felt Asura-chan nod. You'd better make it quick.

Mei was no stranger to hot iron. She reached in with all four hands, found the edge of both chest plates, and despite the heat in her hands, in her eyes, reaching into the depths of her soul, she PULLED, and watched steel bend before her, and blood pool on the pavement and her clothing.

She felt the flame in her body, in her hands, as she reached, found the eye, and got firm purchase, wrenching it free of its bloody steel prison, holding it aloft, triumphant, as if it were a beating heart.

Somehow, somehow, it was still shining in her hands, as it steamed and hissed, and the Ryuuroid before her seemed to weaken, pale, atrophy.

At that point it was all over but the incredible pose and requisite explosion.

And yet, as the monster faded to dust, Gold Dragon said what was on everyone's minds when they looked upon Mei's hand, covered with steaming blood:

"Why is it still shining!?"
