Kotone's Starter Choice

Here's the thing - I'm mostly risk averse when I don't see the risk as worth taking. Since I like Oddish fine, going for a rarer or more dangerous Pokemon I'd also like fine is just adding risk for no real improvement in reward. Saving Leaf's life, however, is both being a decent human being and preserving one of our extra lives, so the reward is worth it.

This isn't a proper deathworld quest without leaping into danger head-on!
... with tons of prep work of course.
We're a sniper ninja who chose Oddish as a starter because it was safe and could disable enemies at range. We're not leaping into danger anytime soon. Leaping away from danger, most likely.

Edit: I am not at all bitter about the whole Oddish debacle. Nope. I'm just complaining about Leaf's awesome Kangaskhan because it's awesome dangerous.

I'm sorry you couldn't perceive it; I couldn't at first, either:
Kotone's simply too fast for mortal eyes. When she's not busy being controlled by a hive mind of Serious Veterans, her agility increases tenfold, and she leaps into danger and right back out, thus appearing as if she was cautious the whole time.

Damn sneaky ninjas.

I kinda think folks on the losing side of the Oddish argument should get dibs on suggestions for the second Pokemon in Kotone's roster.

I mean, assuming she doesn't die in the Safari Zone. >.>

Wait, utterly off-topic: EVERY Kangaskhan has a joey in it's pouch? Are they all female, and if so, how do they reproduce? Or is it like a seahorse thing and male Kangaskhan also have a pouch? Because for mammals, that makes zero sense.

Look on the bright side. If Kotone ever does bite it...then that's our Kangaskhan? Yeah I got nothing.

Folks, not to be obvious or anything, but we have to finish up our plans for our Pokemon and talking to professors before the test. Neither safari zone north or agility training will help with our interviews.

To my mind, we need to talk to Traps Guy and we need to talk to Equipment Guy. @wdango Do we need to research Fuschia in order to answer geography questions, or can we skim by going 'yeah, definitely trapping this Pokemon in the safari zone'? I am hoping Silver or Gary gave us a little advice on this at the meeting, maybe Silver because it's social? I don't want to sink 4 days into researching Fuschia outskirt geography. >.>

Here's my draft list for each teacher for y'all to look at while I wake up and make some tea. Sorry these are a bit of a mess, I've been collecting questions from different people.

Professor Blaustein
(See below.)

Professor Elm
  1. Is there standard equipment given to all students, and how heavy is it?
  2. Here's my draft equipment list for my capture, will there be a problem with any of these?
  3. How does one bottle sleep powder and so on, anyway? I'm going for an Oddish and would like to be able to harvest useful powders.

Equipment List (max 30 kg)
Pokeball
Standard weapons (sniper rifle, shuriken, etc)
Silencer(s)
Standard survival kit (tents, survival rations, etc)
Clothes & light armor to protect against acid and razor leaf
Gloves
Filter masks
Ear plugs
Sleeping powder (1-2 doses for an Oddish)
Collapsible watering can
High quality, fast absorbing liquid fertilizer
Incendiary grenades (2)
Other trapping supplies?
Potions (3)
Antidotes to: poison, sleep, paralysis (6 doses)
Repel (lots)

Edit: Anyone want to explain why they're voting for agility training? I am puzzled by that one.
1. Yes you don't need to research Fuchsia North since you're likely only staying on its very northern edge. There won't be Navigation bonuses, but for 2 days worth of research I doubt it's worth it anyway.

2. You *can* bring more than 30kg. List first, I'll give you options later along with some harder mechanics.

Remember, any Pokémon can reproduce with any other Pokémon in its egg group. So likely Nidoran males, Rhydons, and possibly Slowpokes.

@wdango It could be interesting to make it so that Pokémon can gain extra stats based on their heritage.
3. Yeah no only same species. If you ever do a Kangaskhan research or it ever comes up in the narrative, you'll get more details on that.

Okay, not needing to research Fuschia makes me a lot less paranoid about scheduling. We'll have time to start non-essential research and training before the interviews, then.

Ideally the situation should be "a perfect shot to the Kangaskhan through the designated area and a quick escape out of the Zone". I fully expect this to go to shit however. Hmm should we bring something with a little more kick to help us with this?

Edit: For emergencies

Look on the bright side. If Kotone ever does bite it...then that's our Kangaskhan? Yeah I got nothing.
I'd say if we die, then it's likely she dies as well, but she probably would survive, too, just to add insult to (lethal) injury.

I hear high explosives are pretty good this time of the year.

I keep forgetting to add night vision goggles to my draft equipment list, so this is partially a note to self, but also, what other equipment do we want? I like repel and grenades for emergencies.

[X] Wysteria

I want to come up with some more useful questions for Bill (and also maybe some equipment suggestions), but I'm far too groggy to think that deeply right now. :V Wyste's vote seems pretty solid, anyway. Bandwagon ho!

This. Some risks have to be taken to get The Golden Ending, and I consider Leaf's survival to be part of The Golden Ending (even if she and Ash are being dumbs). In fact, I don't intend to treat anyone as easily disposable, and the original five in particular are as important to me as Kotone's personal quest.

That has nothing to do with them being our extra lives, btw. I just like all of the dynamics at play here, and I want to see them through. Besides, people getting too hung up about not being able to get "cool" or "awesome" pokemon just tells me that they don't actually know very much about Nuzlockes. Aside from Nuzlockes obviously being hardcore, the whole spirit of a Nuzlocke is being forced to use pokemon you never would have used during a normal run and learning to appreciate them. Making due with "subpar" picks is perfectly expected.

@DeepWaters kinda gets into my philosophy here, too, and part of this is that I've been heavily brainwashed by the Pokemon cartoon show and I have no shame about this. A strong Pokemon is a Pokemon you bond with and train hard with, not Shiny Species X. (*pokemon theme tune starts playing in the background*)

Not that I object to bonding with dark/spooky Pokemon, mind.

This brings me around to a ninja-related thought, which is: status effects. We could have Kotone be the queen of status effects. Confusion, sleep, paralysis, poison, burns... am I missing any?

As for the weight limit, I've made a note about that not being a hard upper limit, but I see no reason to travel heavy when we can travel light. We are speedy, let's be speedy. Not that I have any idea how heavy a kg is, so *waves hands vaguely* someone else who understands rational weight systems will have to do that part.

There's a lot more than you'd expect, though I don't think they all make sense in this setting. Of the ones I could see showing up, there's the big ones: Burned, Frozen, Paralyzed, Poisoned, Badly Poisoned (Toxic), and Sleeping.

Then you've got confused, flinching, infatuated, seeded (Leech Seed), bound (Bind, Fire Spin, etc), cursed, taunted, encored, tormented, identified, and levitating (Telekinesis). I'm not sure some of those should count for our purposes, but eh, there you go.

Rule of thumb: A kilogram is a bit more than twice a pound. 30kg is probably in the ballpark of 70lb-- and a quick check on google tells me 66lb, so close enough. :V

And Hex. Not a Status move, but if you're going for a Queen of Debuffs you'll learn to appreciate Hex, and to a lesser extent, Venoshock.
