Well, I wouldn't either, but only because the better educated my enemies are, the more dangerous they are to me.
"Skew... I have found you at last...!"
"Oh, hello there! What are you doing here, on this lonely mountain with no backup?"
"You Fiend! I have learned the forbidden arts of Calculus and endured the mind-numbing exercises. Now, prepare to die!"
"Umm, are you sure? Math doesn't sound so--"
"BEHOLD! MY POWER MOVE: LIMITLESS INTEGRATION!" *starts scribbling on notepad*

*space and time contort, power levels spike through the roof, the very idea of existence is put into question in your mind as you are integrated into your rival's mystical amulet, shaped suspiciously like the word "lim"*

It's worth noting that we can automatically and instantly return the oddish once we have caught it. We can't expect it to be a trained oddish, but we can expect it to be a wild oddish in a potentially useful way.

Point. I'm just 90% opposed to using it for anything except passing the test. I mean, imagine going through all that, catching it smoothly, and then having it stepped on by a grumpy Nidoqueen.

[X] "I think that's a good idea for your Nidoran since we'd otherwise have to track it in the Safari Zone, but my Oddish shouldn't be a problem."
-[X] "But it's not like Gary's advice isn't a good idea! What do you think, Leaf? You haven't said much so far."
[x] "The specimens you find outside are going to be weaker, though. And I bet it'll take us longer to find a suitable one to capture."

Absolutely. If all goes according to plan, we shouldn't risk it, but there's a decent sliver of possibility space in which things go pear-shaped enough to warrant its deployment, but not too pear-shaped that it doesn't matter.

Thanks, now I'm imagining a bear of all things lecturing us on the dangers of using a freshly caught animated plant and how it could be squished by a giant animal.

Fun fact: In gen 2, Ursaring could learn fire punch.

Smokey the Ursaring says only you can start forest fires!
Turns out Smokey was warning us... about himself.
He is the one who starts forest fires.
We are the only ones who can stop him.
If we don't, he'll lose control.
So really, it's a cry for help.
His name is not ironic.

@wdango,
you the type to tell Dan, "Go!"?
Van Gogh
Couldn't match ya pace in writin'
Not that he
can, so:
Tell you what, you da man, you damn GOAT
I'm sayin' just cuz I'm a fan, yo!

*drops mic again*
"Alright, that's it, get out."
*gets thrown out by a bear bouncer*

Lol y'all.

Votes locked.

Surprising turnout for me, with lots of votes, and far more discussion than I expected. But even after combining the subvotes, it's still 11:8 in favour of just listening to Gary.

Also, checking the poll, looks like quite a lot of people are interested in Scyther.

And that's why I gave you the option of talking to other people straight off the bat lol. It's true that I didn't give a hint as to why it might be valuable, but I thought SV liked mystery boxes.

Anyway, off to write.

Well, SV does like mystery boxes, we just don't like socializing with people. Everything must be sacrificed to the Altar of Hyper-Efficiency.

And since this is a Nuzlocke quest, I expect people to be waay more conservative about mystery boxes.

I wish I had discovered this quest earlier. I would've voted to Magnemite. Or even Murkrow, "too aggressive" is not a thing for a setting where Pokémon are weapons and trainers are special military forces.

Just to pass the time until the next update, I'll argue with you: it's definitely a thing since we chose Kotone, with her better world quest. A Pokemon that's overly aggressive is not evidence of peaceful coexistence in the making.

I would argue that that makes the perfect contrast. They can be killing machines, yes, and it's best to never forget it, but they absolutely can also be affectionate and genuinely caring friends, even Dark-type pokémon. Kinda like the Night Fury plot in HTTYD.

Also, I think "Peaceful Coexistence" might be stretching things too far. Just because Pokémon don't HAVE to be murder tools doesn't mean they are automatically cuddly. Wild pokémon are still extremely dangerous and ahould be killed/contained.

You create an environment where we are forced to spend critically limited resources in an environment of limited information. You make it clear that the chance of failure is high, and the consequences for failure are losing literally everything, and then going back to lose everything again, four more times, so that we can have the unique experience of losing 5 everythings by the end. This is not the sort of fun-loving atmosphere that encourages people to grab mystery boxes. Please do not mock us by implying that it is.

I just got very focused on Pokemon choice because people were voting for choices that were Wrong.

(Okay, choices that were Magnemite. >.>)
What the heck is wrong with magnemite? I'll agree that murkrow isn't ever going to be anyone's poster child for "they can be more than just weapons", but magnemite?

Actually, Magnetmite could likely have a great deal of out of combat usage, in generating and manipulating energy.

More concerning to me, they are resistant to basically everything in our arsenal but incendiaries, and immune to any kind of poison-based tranquilisation. That would make them a very difficult and dangerous starter.

I personally wouldn't object to getting one later, though.
