Our story begins, as most stories do, in an unassuming, perfectly normal neighbourhood, more specifically on a street of disturbingly identical houses that looked as though it was lifted directly from an 80's soap opera. However, the residents of the Fourth house of this `Privet Drive` harbour a rather...uncommon Secret; The so called "Troubled Boy" Harry Potter is -in fact- a Wizard. Not just any wizard, Harry is the Boy Who Lived; the only being to survive the killing curse Avada Kedavra, the same spell that took his parents.

Just a few scant months prior to our tale, Harry was not only forced to participate in a deadly magical tournament which resulted in the death of an upperclassman, but was also crucified to resurrect his parent's killer.

Now, thanks to both the machinations of his headmaster & the malice of his relatives, Harry is completely isolated with even his two closest friends ignoring his attempts at communication via Owl.

As young Mr. Potter attempts to work on the mountains of homework assigned to him so as to make up for the lower academic priority for Champions, our story begins with a lonely young man blindly reaching out to the world for a true, sincere friend…

...Not knowing that this unfettered bond will shake the Wizarding World to its very core.

Merlin! I can't focus on this! As much as I like Hagrid, he should at least assign the proper books. What even is a "Pogrebin"? Magi-zoology of Great Britain jumps from Post Owls to Porlocks. What time is it? 17:30, dinner time, great. Well this isn't working out anyway I may as well try and get some food before Dudley.

Surprisingly aunt Petunia is running late with dinner so she sent me to the living room to wait with Dudley. Oddly enough he wasn't gawking at the telly, instead he was reading an actual old fashioned letter.

As I sat in the old wooden chair Petunia so graciously lets me use. I called out to him. "Hey, Dudders, never thought you'd be one for the classics. Broken your phone again?"

Jumping at the sound of my voice, he immediately went to hide the letter while looking around the room in a panic & paling when he saw me. "P-P-Potter! I-i-it's not what it looks like, I swear! I…"

Strange, it's not like Dudley to be afraid of me, usually he'd be rubbing it in how he has more friends than me. "Oh, Dudley? So tell me what it is, I'm sure it's nothing worse than my you-know-what."
Almost immediately Dudley retorted. "You don't know that Potter, You know how much dad hates French people right? Well, for the last year I've been writing to a French guy without mom or dad knowing, it's why we use letters; the amount of times dad's friend has had to fix my phone & laptop he would've seen something & told dad."

Huh, never knew he had it in him to go behind Vernon's back like this. "Right,,,so, what made you write to a French dude? You have Piers, Morgan & that lot."

Sputtering and turning red in imitation of his dad, he hissed. "Why should I tell you?!"

Here I grinned, as much as he wants to be like Uncle Vernon, Dudley isn't anywhere near his Executive dad & as poor as the Weasleys are, every single one of them have sharp minds. "I suggest you tell me Dudley, or Uncle Vernon might learn about your mate."

Eyes going wide, the colour drained from his face as he stuttered. "T-t-they wouldn't believe you! E-even if you show them a letter I'll say you forged it with m-m-magic!"

At this I scoff. "Don't be daft Dudley, your dad's an Executive Director at Grunnings; part of his job is to spot forgeries, plus I can't use magic outside of school, remember?"

Wilting, before glancing at the door to check we were still alone he grudgingly answered. "We met at an impromptu boxing street tournament in London while he was on holiday, Clovis Leroy, he kicked my ass...but he didn't leave me ruined like the guys would have, he treated me to lunch after the tourney was over; said I had potential, only dad's ever said that. We've kept in touch ever since"

Yeah...I had noticed Dudley was more muscular than fat this year."Listen Potter, nobody can know about this! If you can keep this quiet I'll keep the boys off you to sweeten the deal."

The pleading look on Dudley's face caught me so off-guard I couldn't help but agree. "Uh...sure Dudley, but uh, why not use the library computers to email him?"

Laughing in his usual fashion he answered. "Now who's daft Potter? You know I've never been to the library, if I just started going out of the blue it'd look odd."

I have to concede his point there, it would draw unnecessary attention, but before I can ask any more, Petunia calls us for dinner. So as Dudley shoots me a half-warning, half-nervous look I sink into thought...yes, a fresh unbiased friend, that sounds nice.

Back in my room, I pick up Hagrid's textbook again, not to study, but to check an Owl's abilities...yeah, thought so.

Magi-zoology of Great Britain: Post Owls said:
... As long as a Wizard or Witch focuses on a quality of the recipient, an Owl requires no address or name, this quality may be as vague or defined as the sender wishes…

Thinking for a bit I turn to Hedwig. "Well? What do you think girl? You up for travelling the world to find me a proper friend?"

For an owl, she's surprisingly expressive, simply by puffing out her chest & looking down her beak at me I got the impression she was disappointed in me even asking such a silly question.

Chuckling to myself as I get out my writing supplies, I snarked back. "Yeah, yeah, you just want to have an excuse to get out of there for a few weeks."

Right, how should I write this?

[] Friendly.

[] Trusting.

[] Hopeful.

Ok...that looks good, now, what quality should I pick? Maybe like Dudley it should be something we have in common?

[] "Someone who understands [Death]."

[] "Someone who understands [Public Opinion]."

[] "Someone who understands [Duty]."

Folding the letter I put it in an envelope & tied it to Hedwig's out-stretched leg, then watched her rocket out the window, hopefully to find me a good friend.

GM Notes: Ok, quite a few notes for this one, first off; as you can see this is a Harry Potter crossover, however, the time frame has moved from 1981-1997 to 2001-2017, leaving you in 2015, the reason for this was to match timelines better.

Secondly, I'm not sure I got Harry's & Dudley's interaction right; they feel too friendly.

Thirdly, I want some good discussion on the votes, not just voting & leaving it, tell us why you voted that & why Harry picked it.

Fourth, I haven't seen Fantastic Beasts yet, so it's just the main story, Pottermore & the Harry Potter Wiki that I get my info from.

Finally,; HOLY SHIT! This post is 1.2k words long! It's my longest OP.
