"The only thing wrong with immortality is that it tends to go on forever."
- Herb Caen

Immortality: a highly coveted yet scorned state of being. It's very controversial as many argue whether or not it improves or diminishes life.

Does having no end make life meaningless? Does it all become redundant and pointless? You'll always find someone else to love. You'll always have time to do something you like, and there will come a time when you've done it thousands of times. You'll lose everyone inevitably and be all alone. Wouldn't immortality just make life a monotonous routine with no end?

On the other hand, doesn't eternal life bring peace and happiness? That would explain why so many people have sought it, and why so many religions preach it. Without the fear of death, you always have time to accomplish your dreams. You have all the time necessary to truly enjoy life and try everything at least once. It's even better if you get to enjoy it with someone else forever.

Really, whether or not immortality is a good or bad thing, depends on the person you ask.

From your experience…it's alright. It's basically just a very very long life, and just like a short life you've experienced a good amount of ups and downs.

You've experienced many loves and many heartbreaks. You've felt triumph and pride, and you've felt sorrow and defeat. Joy and anger, fear and courage, lust and desire, pleasure and pain, hope and content have all been experienced by you.

There have been times where you were as lazy and slow moving as the mountains.

There have been times where you were as fickle and quick as the sky's lightning.

There have been times where you were alone with no one to truly talk to.

There have been times where you felt like you belonged and were surrounded by those you loved.

You've been a farmer, a teacher, a warrior, a slave, a liar, a cheat, and everything one could think of.

You're an immortal who has done everything under the sun and moon and stars.

You've been an immortal for a very long time, long enough that you don't even remember your mortal life…if you ever had one.

Yet despite this, you are once again returning to the field of education. Once again you are assuming the role of a teacher.

You've done it before, multiple times in fact, but you find yourself doing it one more time out of…

[ ] Boredom: you're bored. You aren't going to sugarcoat it or anything; you're bored and need something fun to do. After a lot of careful consideration and deep thought, you decided that teaching once again could be fun.

[ ] Obligation: you have to do it. At some point in your immortal life, something happened that has forced you to teach. Maybe someone successfully bound you with a spell or something, or maybe you committed a crime and teaching is an act of community service. Whatever the case, you're forced to do this.

[ ] Duty: you're doing your job. Maybe it's due to a promise or an oath, or maybe you just find a sense of purpose in it, whatever the case you believe teaching is a sacred duty that you need to do. You are an immortal after all, so it makes sense that you would find meaning in sharing your wisdom and knowledge with others.

[ ] Write-In: there are many reasons for you to do something; especially, since you're an immortal being that will outlive all of your students and fellow teachers.

It isn't too bad. Sure you've had some ups and downs with it in the past, but that was…a very long time ago. Circumstances and situations change.

Now you'll be teaching in an age of…

[] Legends: mighty warriors, god kings, powerful wizards and mythical creatures of all shapes and sizes, are present in this age. There's a very good chance you'll be teaching noble scions or people gifted in the arcane arts. Kings and nobles will be watching your progress, and the Gods might be interested in the immortal teacher.
Explanation: The typical medieval high fantasy setting. There are multiple races, the gods are real, magic is aplenty, and feudal kingdoms battle for supremacy. Nobles politic against each other, monsters ravage the countryside, and dark cults threaten to destroy the world. Not much else needs to be said. Grab your sword and ready your spells. (A good chunk of isekai anime nowadays, warhammer fantasy, lord of the rings)

[] Heroes: courageous heroes and dastardly villains are present in this age. Something happened at some point, and people just started taking up the mantle of hero or villain. Good chance you'll be teaching the next generation of heroes…or villains. Depending on what exactly caused this change, it's possible your immortality might just be brushed off.
Explanation: A modern setting in a world somewhat akin to ours. The main difference is that superheroes and supervillains have started popping up for some unknown reason. People just started having powers and abilities beyond the norm, and no one really knows why. Governments have done their best to organize and regulate these heroes and codify new laws for them but nothing's perfect. (DC, Marvel, My Hero Academy, and stuff like that)

[] Mutants: a strange virus or mutation appeared one day and drastically altered the world. At first it just decimated the world and slaughtered the majority of the population, but something changed after a while. Now those who survived the initial onslaught possess powers and abilities beyond the norm. You'll probably have to deal with such people when you begin teaching…depending on if you're teaching a normal school or one filled with mutants.
Explanation: The world was ravaged by a disastrous plague that basically wiped most of humanity out by turning them into horrid monstrosities. Those that survived the plague were given unnatural powers and abilities, yet are still haunted by the ever present chance of the virus getting out of control. The majority of the world is abandoned monster filled wasteland, while there are megacities where most people congregate. These megacities are essentially cyberpunk like city states with cybernetics, internet, androids, and the likes. (Cyberpunk, Fallout, Project Moonverse)

[] Magitech: magic and science perfectly entwined together just like the mundane and supernatural. In this age, the supernatural are aplenty and well known just like the natural. Gods run corporations, wizards keep power grids going, humans and dragons get along, and so on and so forth. In this age, you'll probably be teaching in a school with a diverse array of subjects and students due to the many different fields of arcane science in the world.
Explanation: The modern day mixed with high fantasy. In this setting, the supernatural never faded or was wiped out, yet basic technological progress was never stifled either. The supernatural and the mundane have learned to…mostly coexist with only some problems. As such, humans and elves and beastmen and stuff walk together on paved streets. Magic and science are melded together in the public sphere, while gods are still worshiped but in more rational ways. The wonders of fantasy with the comfort and familiarity of modern life. (Final Fantasy, Xenosaga, Eberron)

[] Myths: the mighty supernatural has retreated into the shadows and corners of the world. The Gods are silent, magic is forgotten, monsters and fae are all in hiding. The mundane rule now, and only those in the know are able to contact the other side. Considering what you are, you might just teach a normal school with few supernaturals, or you might get a job at a hidden academy where the supernatural still thrive.
Explanation: The typical urban fantasy setting. The world is very similar to ours, but the supernatural are real. The general public is unaware of the existence of the supernatural and still relegate such things to myths and legends and fairy tales. On the surface, nothing is different from now. Beneath the surface, gods and demons, wizards and fae, and all matters of magic and myths are as real as the sun above. They have their own societies and schools hidden from view. (World of Darkness, Harry Potter, Kamigakari)

[] Space: where the stars are charted, the worlds colonized, and whole systems fought over for dominance. Aliens, robots, and horrors beyond the stars are present in this age. There's a very good chance you'll be teaching at a normal school or maybe some academy specialized depending on where you are. Psychic academies, military academies, exploration academies, and so on and so forth if you so choose.
Explanation: The typical science fantasy setting. Humanity has long reached the galactic stage, and is a regular participant along with numerous other alien civilizations. Robots and aliens, precursor ruins, strange psychic powers, horrors beyond the stars, and many many other staples of science and fantasy are here. (Star Wars, Mass Effect, Gundam)

[] Fracture: something has gone horribly wrong in the timeline, and everything is now present in this age. Even as an immortal, you're not completely certain of how this age came about; it might have been caused by your actions in the past. Whatever the case, this age is filled with everything one could think of. Mighty beasts of myths, gods roaming the land, ships that sail the stars, heroes and villains battling for supremacy, steaming locomotives with magitech mutants. Being a teacher in this age is going to give you a headache, but is sure to keep you on your toes.
Explanation: The setting where everything thought of is thrown into the world. A broken hodgepodge of genres and themes, the world is chaotic and always on the verge of absurdity. Steampunk romans at war with arcane robot dog people, eldritch horrors secretly controlling mega corporations that purposely keep the heroes funded, and many other ridiculous things are present here. Good luck and have fun!

[] Write-In: there are many ages that come and go. It doesn't matter how unique or similar they are, every age brings its own unique opportunities.

Hello everyone of SufficientVelocity!

It is I, BurningLaugh, back again with a brand new quest!

This is a quest where the voters shall play as an immortal that has decided to once again take up the mantle of teacher in a new age. Of course, the exact age and reason for this need to be determined, so this vote will cover that. DO KNOW THAT WRITE-INs ARE SUBJECT TO VETO...like always.

Once this vote is dealt with, and we have a firm grasp on the setting, then we can move on to the character proper and the schools that you all might teach at.

I don't think much else needs to be said. Thank you for showing interest and participating, I hope this quest is able to provide some enjoyment for you all.

[X] It's Good To Reconnect : Every so often it's important for you to reconnect with the mortals of the current era, and there is no better way than to teach a familiar subject and having to restructure your analogies and questions to be easier understood and absorbed by your students. The chance to explore a subject through fresh eyes is always enlightening.

Post 2: The Immortal's Place in the New World
"We never fail when we try to do our duty, we always fail when we neglect to do it."
- Robert Baden-Powell

You've never neglected your duty. Teaching, educating, instructing, guiding, whatever term you want to use, you've done it. You've been called teacher, sensei, master, mentor, sage, doctor, wiseman, and many many more throughout your eternal life.

Even when you were taking a break and doing something else, you always found yourself teaching or guiding at least one person.

It's not necessarily because you find it fun. You find meaning in it. Teaching people gives your life purpose because…

[ ] you're honoring a promise made long ago. At some point, very long ago, you made a promise to someone. The…exact specifics of the promise are lost to you, but teaching and educating people is the best way to honor it. Maybe you promised to be a teacher, or maybe you just promised to help people. Whatever the case, you still honor that promise to this day, and you will continue to honor it forever.

[ ] you're helping the world and keeping the past alive. When you've lived as many years as you have, you see all manners of things. You see all types of people, civilizations, cultures, inventions, events, and really everything anyone can think of. Though such things are thought to be eternal or immortal, they are eventually forgotten by the world. The effects and consequences of those things are still felt today…even if barely, but no one remembers them. That's why you do what you do. To keep the legacies of such things alive, and to improve the world when necessary and where needed.

[ ] Write-in: teaching is your duty, but there are many ways that a duty can manifest and many reasons for why you have upheld it. (Write in why you have teaching as a duty, and why you uphold it)

Maybe that's why you don't mind your immortality. You don't find it to be such a curse because you still have a purpose that makes it meaningful. Something that always brings a smile to your face. A way to spend your years without regret, and a way to cement an era fondly in your memories.

You never really expected or intended for teaching to become your eternal duty. It just kinda happened at some point. Constantly popping up every couple centuries or millennia to teach people has…

[ ] led to your immortality becoming public knowledge. Alright so technology has greatly improved throughout the years for this respective age, and the presence of long-lived and pseudo-immortal species have led to people being able to easily figure out your immortal. This has given you quite the reputation in the world, almost a global celebrity type of fame that even some gods are envious of.

[ ] led to a few people learning of your immortality. Though it isn't well-known or common knowledge, there are some people that are aware of your immortality. It's only a few like a few good friends, some former enemies or allies, and the random dude who was smart enough to piece it together. This means that some people know of your unique nature and will probably watch you carefully, but the vast majority of people don't know you.

[ ] surprisingly not led to anyone learning of your immortality. No one has learned of your immortality, and those that did know of it are long dead. You've been exceedingly careful with your actions and appearances, so no one has been able to connect the dots. You also cover your tracks whenever you take on a new identity; you're also pretty sure that the last global crisis helped remove you from the public eye.

[ ] write-in: you've been alive for eons. Who really knows how many people know of your immortality/existence, and who knows how they all feel about it? (write in if anyone or anything remembers you and is aware of your immortality, also write in how they feel towards it)

Which you're not really against. You could always broadcast your nature if desired. You could also lay low till people forget about you if it ever became a true problem.

You remember the first few times that people learned of your immortality. Oh their reactions were priceless when they learned about…

[ ] the true God walking the planet. You're God, and that's God with a capital G. You aren't like the other gods who have to rely on worship, special magics, or special foods for their power and survival. You are absolute, the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega, the light and the dark. You're the creator that existed before everyone else, and will exist long after everyone else ends. You are immortal because you don't end.

[ ] an apex predator roaming free. You're…kinda the epitome of what it means to be an apex predator. You evolved or were created at some point, and you just never stopped growing and evolving. You don't get sick, you can't get injured, you don't starve or get dehydrated, nor do you age or anything. If something infects you, you immediately develop a cure with your antibodies. If you die, you immediately regenerate and revive. You are immortal because nothing can kill you.

[ ] a mortal that lucked into immortality. Okay, being completely honest here, you have no clue how you became an immortal. You were minding your own business, maybe some stuff happened that involved a trick or a deal or whatever, and before you knew it you just didn't die anymore. Time couldn't age you unless you wanted it to, harm couldn't reach you unless you wanted it to, you couldn't catch a cold by accident, and the reaper once mistook someone else for you. You are immortal because nothing can touch you.

[ ] someone that reached enlightenment. You were an entity like any other. Then one day, you somehow reached a stage of awareness that was higher than all others. It's hard to explain, but you basically ascended to a level far beyond everyone and everything else. The laws and rules and desires that plague the world no longer apply to you, nor do they hold any influence or power over you. You are immortal because you are beyond everything.

[ ] write-in: the way you became a true immortal was a bit crazy, and the people who learned about it so long ago were just as shocked as you were to realize it.

Alright, you're getting off topic.

You're going back to being a teacher, which means you kind of need to update your resume and renew your identity.

So let's take it from the very top with name and gender.

[ ] Name:

[ ] Gender:

Of course then there's your race/species. Thankfully, due to the magitech age of this world, there are many many many different creatures roaming around, so nothing should really stick out.

What is your race/species?
[ ] Human
[ ] Elf
[ ] Dwarf
[ ] Orc
[ ] Hobgoblin
[ ] Dragon
[ ] Phoenix
[ ] Kitsune
[ ] Automaton
[ ] Fey
[ ] Shoggoth
[ ] Angel
[ ] Demon
[ ] Write-In: There are many creatures roaming this world, and nothing ever said you had to be one from the world

[ ] (Optional) Appearance:

Next would be the words that describe you best…or at least what others would use to describe you. That whole strengths and weaknesses thing that people ask when hiring someone.

What three words would describe you best? (Choose 3)
[ ] Eccentric
[ ] Objective
[ ] Rebellious
[ ] Proud
[ ] Calculating
[ ] Ambitious
[ ] Quiet
[ ] Timid
[ ] Obsessive
[ ] Kind
[ ] Spiritual
[ ] Childish
[ ] Mature
[ ] Courageous
[ ] Mischievous
[ ] Write-In: many ways to describe someone whether it be their strengths or weaknesses.

Some minor additions and changes here and there to better fit the time.

A few details and fluff to make yourself sound like an excellent candidate, and of course some brown nosing towards the institution to show that you actually care for it.

With that all done and dealt with, you just have to send the resume out and wait to hear back.

Of course, you'll get the job.

You always get the job nowadays.

But where will you work?

[ ] 7 Sacred Towers of Wisdom: a rather prestigious college that specializes in the arcano-sciences. Due to the Age of Magitech, magic and science are basically one and the same. With the winds of magic being so entwined with technology, people started studying and researching it once again. The 7 Sacred Towers of Wisdom is a university where great minds of all types congregate to teach, research, study, and further develop everyone's understanding of magic and science. You'll be a professor here that gets to deal with experts of their fields, seasoned adults and youngsters entering adulthood.

[ ] Golden Valley Institute: a private school where the more...affluent and influential members of society study. It's a normal school in the sense that the students are young adults and teenagers, but due to it being a high-society school it does things different from public schools. Not mentioning the higher standards and better quality of the place, the academy is focused on preparing the students with the connections and skills required to operate, grow, and expand their families' influence and wealth. Long story short, it's a lot like when you were teaching those noble brats back in the dark ages.

[ ] Crossroads School: a typical school located in a rather small neighborhood. It's an old school that has become quite…rundown throughout the years. Originally it was no different from any school that took people from primary to secondary school. However, throughout the years, it's just become a shell of its former self. Many teachers are useless or jerks who don't care for teaching, and the students are all delinquents that form gangs and cause problems. Not your first time dealing with a…problematic institution.

[ ] Raijin High: a normal school located in the city. There's not a lot to say about Raijin High. It's what anyone would expect. It has some problems, but it also has some highlights. The teachers and students range from crap to awesome, the pay is…okay, and the curriculum is basic for the world. Being a simple teacher here will let you work in relative peace, and you'll be able to get the most average experiences of living in this age.

[ ] Dawnstar Academy: ah yes, the military academy option. Who doesn't love a government sponsored educational institution that specializes in training the next generation of super soldiers? No matter what the age, war and conflict are inevitable. Nations still wage war despite the devastating powers they wield, and this doesn't even take into account when people venture into the chaotic realm of souls. It's not surprising that governments use their resources to train and create people meant to both turn the tide of wars and successfully explore the realm of souls. It's similar to when religions would train chosen ones to carry out their god's will. Well…at least the pay will be great, and you get to teach a very exciting and dangerous curriculum.

[ ] Write-In: there are many schools in the world, and you can get a job at any of them. (Write in the type of school you want to teach at)

Second post is up and ready!

So some explanations
- First choice determines the reason behind your duty, why exactly you feel teaching is your job, and why you find purpose in it.

- Second choice determines if anyone knows about your immortality, and if so how do they generally feel about it. The write-in should be used if you have a specific idea in mind like an immortal wife or some millennia long rivalry with some evil organization that keeps popping up, or some random crap like that.

- Third choice determines exactly what kind of immortal you are. Well...mmh. Okay so what makes you all unique is that you are a TRUE immortal. Nothing can kill you. You always come back. No not reincarnation, not eternal youth, not invulnerability. Immortal in the truest sense. Even death will die before you do. Doesn't matter if someone obliterates your soul, you will return. This is different from everyone else who is a pseudo-immortal, even the gods. Everything and everyone else will die or can be killed by something. Use the write-in here if you want to go into detail on how you became immortal.

- The next set of choices are character creation and determining which school you get to. Ask any questions if you have them.

As always feedback, discussions, and questions are always welcomed.

I think that's everything, so let us begin!

Edit: VOTE IN PLAN FORMAT!!!
