You scramble awake, choking on your own spit and quickly fall out of...your bed? Your bed was not nearly this small...and now that you think of it, this ground is far too hard from what you remember.
You look around...and quickly come to the conclusion that you are not where you were last night. The concrete walls are one clue. The Metal door is another, and the futuristic console next to you is a third.
Speaking of the console, you notice that it seems to have a message for you. Stumbling over to the machine attached to the wall, you fumble with the controls for a bit before clicking the message.
...Wait a second, that's-
"WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSAL ARENA! Where all your dreams of fighting in Giant robots come true! I am Ringmaster Karn and You, my good friend, have just won the opportunity to pilot a real-life mobile suit in a battle to the death!"
Wait! You hadn't wanted to risk your life for this!
"Hmm? Then why did you sign up for it?"
At the apparent response (even though this is definitely a prerecorded message), you sputter silently.
"That's what I thought. Anyway, You've won an all expense paid trip to The Arena, where you can fight to your heart's content! Don't worry about missing your family, a body double has been provided to ensure that nothing is amiss to them!"
Seemingly oblivious to your mounting horror at some essentially taking over your life, Karn continues on. "Anyway, you will be divided up into different "Rate" fighters, with First rate being the best, doing the best, and having the best. Meanwhile, you..."
Karn flashes you a nasty grin. "Are a bottom rate fighter. The worst of the worst, with nothing but your own clothes, skills, and what we so graciously will provide you with on your registration sheet."
"Anyway. Let's confirm your sheet just so you don't cry foul."

"You decided to fight in the..."
[] "Federation Arena. Full of machines used by the EFSF, these things pack quite a wallop for their versatility."
[] "Zeonic Arena. Utilizing Machines from the Principality of Zeon, these things are quite powerful in the right situations!"
"You also were given the option to take a single boon. In the end, you chose..."
[] "A Weapon. Not very surprising, but should pack a nasty punch if used correctly." (Take 1 weapon.)
[] "Some Extra Armor. Not usually the most picked option, but having an extra plate in the right place can be invaluable." (MS Gains trait: 'Well Armored')
[] "A Special Custom Part. Generally useful if put on the right suit. The Best part is that any suit can use them, so you can always find a place for it." (Choose 1 Lvl 1 Custom Part. List Here.)
-[] What custom part do you choose?
[] "Nothing? Well, I suppose that was an option. Anyway, using less to get more will get you some real credit fast kid. Of course, you actually have to get said cred, but once you start standing out, it'll be like walking on air." (+1 Favor to start, +1 Favor in addition every time you gain favor.)
"Finally, We've got your name. down here. Now, let me get this right..."
[] "Your name is..." (Write-in here)
After you finish using the little pop ups that came up with the parts of the confirmation process, Karn proceeds to look directly at you.
"Alright then, we'll just take some time to copy this down for posterity. Shouldn't take too long...Be sure to rest up in the meantime. You'll need every minute of it."
With those ominous words said, the console winks out, leaving it black. You try to turn it back on, tap the screens, push buttons, even punch and kick it, but all you get for it is some bruised knuckles. Grudgingly, you go back to lie on your new bed, dreading what is to come...

You don't know how long you spent in the cell. There wasn't any kind of clock or time piece, only the shutdown console (Which you tried to take your frustration out on, only to get bruised knuckles and knees) and your bed, which you just layed down on. However, just as Karn promised, one day it changed. Your door swung open, as if by magic. You gaped at it for a solid ten seconds, before sprinting towards and out the doorway. Quickly swiveling your head around, you notice an empty hallway to your left. You sprint down that way, rushing past other doors as solid as your own cell door, before you come across an empty doorway. From what you can see, there's nothing there. However, it's the only choice you have. You step in, and-
SHUNK
The door jams shut behind you. Before you can react to it, the floor you were standing on folds away into a slide, which you quickly lose your balance on and start sliding down. It isn't long before you come to a stop, landing roughly on...a chair? Before you can comprehend what just happened, a screen that you didn't see lights up to your upper left, showing...
"Wow, I didn't expect you to be so eager to fight! Well, I suppose I can oblige..."
Karn!
"What, did you expect that we would actually let you go? You signed up for it, you get to play. Anyway, onto the fine Mobile Suit you're piloting. The Zaku I, a venerable, robust machine. Also basically useless against anything but another Zaku I. Luckily for you, We've managed to get a rare pairing: Two fresh meat at once!"
Another screen pops up, this time displaying a nondescript young woman whose face you can't recognize at all. She seems terrified at her situation. She couldn't be much older than you...
"Now normally we wouldn't expect Fresh meat to actually advance up without a major miracle, getting a true match up like this is a treat for sure. We can have new blood in the matchups without having to worry about sourcing in other pilots!"
Karn winks at you.
"Anyways, the name of the game: Don't die. Unfortunately for you, there's only one way to not die, and that's by killing off your opponent. There's only one exit path I've got ready, and if you take too long, we'll kill both of you. Please don't force me to, I hate having to send out more of these ads."
You're absolutely furious at Karn's blasé attitude, but there's nothing you can do. No way to harm him, no way to avoid him, And those walls on the side look rather thick...
"Now, let's get onto the action. Fight!"
Hesitantly grasping controls you've never used before, you find them surprisingly simple. You take a bit to learn the controls, keeping an eye on your other "fresh meat" as Karn called the two of you. It's a good thing you did, considering that the girl charged you, making a beeline towards you. Naturally, you respond by counter charging. The two of you meet in the dead center of the ring, struggling against each other for a moment.
However, her footing slips ever so slightly, so you take advantage of that and push, making her stumble. You put the moment of power to good use, using your foot to kick at the other Zaku I's legs. It connects brutally, forcibly knocking the leg up and causing the machine to topple over. You then take Karn's words to heart, thrusting your leg down on the enemy and crushing the steel cockpit further in. After your attack, you back up, fearing your leg getting grabbed, which the girl uses to recover. However, you use the pause to get a punch in at the cockpit, making it crumple just a bit more. The enemy then unveils it's secret weapon: A Heat Hawk, which it attempts to use to attack your cockpit. It just barely grazes you, but even then does some damage to your torso area. Good thing that you chose that extra plate.
You've had enough of this. You want to take the moral high ground, but your life comes before any self-righteousness on your part. You throw your fist out once more, targeting the chest cavity you know is there...and crushes it completely, the twisted steel caving to the fist impacting it. The girl's eyes go wide with fear, before the feed cuts to static.
All you can do is breathe, and come to terms with what you have done.

-----------------
About 20 seconds after the grizzly deed is done, your upper left screen winks on again. It's Karn.
"I didn't think you had it in you! I must say, bravo on the ferocity. You just made mea very happy man with your performance. It's rare we get such ferocity from a newbie. Anyway, onto your victory. Normally we just melt down the defeated suit for parts, weapons and all, but I've decided to throw you a bone and give you an extra frieebie. Go ahead and take that Axe. You're going to need it."
Slowly, almost shamefully, you pry the weapon from the immobile hands of the other Zaku I and place it on your back waist. It slots in perfectly.
"Now, onto your other parts. I'm going to be frank with you: You did well here. You got a lot of stuff to throw around for just 1 victory. Why don't you walk yourself back on over to your slot, and I'll go over what you've got."
"Now, currency in the Arena is set into 2 different types: Scrap and Combat Data. Scrap is essentially what you think it is: Excess metal melted down from defeated suits. It's mainly used to purchase physical items, like weapons, custom parts, and eventually other Suits."
"Combat data is taken from how much you used the machine, and how much optimization you get from it. You normally get a good sum from a more melee type Suit, but not using any weapons definitely helped you out here. Combat data is used to "Research" things, basically give you the authorization to use that weapon. You can also Research Upgrades for your weapons, so don't skimp on that. Now there technically is a 3rd resource simply known as Favor, but we don't need to worry about that yet."
Committing the words to memory, you finally arrive at the opening in the wall. You step in and the huge wall closes behind you. In front of you stands a large..."cradle" you'll call it, which you soon step into. Soon, you're locked in and a door behind you opens... leading into a tube.
You trudge through it, eventually coming across an open door. You glower at said door, and walk in...only to find that you're back in your cell. Before you can do anything about it, the door slams shut once more, leaving you isolated.
As you sit on your bed, the Console lights up, and Karn's smug face shows.
"Now as a curtsey for each fighter, we give them some Downtime between matches. You can basically do whatever you want in that time, excluding killing yourself. However, some popular options usually revolve around optimizing your suit, researching something new, or improving your own skills. Do try and improve."
"Ciao!"
The face winks out, but the console is still online. You shamble over to it, looking over it. It's exactly as he said.
Choose 2 ACTIONS

[] Run some simulations to gain Combat Data (D100 Combat Data)
[] Try to research something
[] Try to purchase something
[] Just rest your head
(AN: 12 hour vote here. Thank you @Vanestus for voting.)
While you're still unconvinced that you'll ever truly adapt to this new sick show of your life, you don't want to die. And if that means playing by Karn's rules, then that's what you'll do. You walk over to the console, slouch on the chair provided there, and log on.
First thing's first. You click on the link titled "Research". A new screen filled with blacked out boxes, a single white box, and a grey one. Before you can do anything, another pre-recorded video pops up. It's Karn.
"Welcome to one of a fighter's best friends; The Research page! Here you can spend combat data gathered from simulations and fighting to gain new things to improve your mobile suit and anything related to it. Naturally, you can't get everything from the get-go. After all, what would we do if everyone was running around in top-rate machines? As a welcome gift, we've given you a free research: the research to the Zaku I. Anything else is on you to research. However, I'll run you through the first one. See that little grey box? Go on ahead an click it. It'll ask for authentication, which you just need to put your finger on the little thumbpad next to the key board. After that, it'll subtract the cost of the data from your total, and give you the data! You'll still need to purchase it, but you can do that at any time. Try it out on the Anti-blast Stabilizer box here."
After Karn's introductory spiel, you click on the box, which quickly brings up a box asking if you wished to research it. You pressed your thumb into the pad, and the box quickly went away, bringing up a box that said "Thank you for your purchase! You have 96 combat data left." After that, another video pops up, Karn's face smiling at you.
"Good job! Now, as you can see, the list is rather extensive, so don't be afraid to get messy in fighting! It's your best way to get more..."
With that ominous note, the video winks out, leaving a few new grey boxes. You sigh, and get onto your next idea.
(Gained access to the Research Page! Unlocked New Research!)
-------------------------------------------
After your rummage through the research page, you then click onto the link titled "Simulator". This leads to what seems to be a settings page. You wait for a moment, but no video from Karn appears; it seems that he wants you to figure it out yourself. Luckily, the settings page seem intuitive, you set the simulator to "empty" so you can familiarize yourself with the controls, and then change it to a Very Easy training to warm up and improve yourself.
(D100=83)
(D50=37)
It goes very well, with you having unlocked some harder difficulties. While you might beat those things, it might also be rather bad for you.
(Gained 83 EXP for piloting!)
(Gained 37 Combat Data!)
(Gained Difficulties! At certain pilot levels, you can choose to take on harder versions of the simulator. You could potentially beat it, but if you fail the simulation, your combat data will suffer. In game terms, you can now choose difficulty. Choosing a higher difficulty than the lowest one adds a DC onto the roll, but if you complete it, you will gain additional potential combat data. However, if you fail, your gained combat data is cut in half.)
------------------------------------
(AN: And there you have it. Your first downtime. Now they won't go on forever, but it's your only chance to improve your machine between battles. I'll be putting up a research list, and the next turn should be up today. Until then, Fighters!)
(EDIT: Research list is up. Feel free to look on your own time.)
Okay, so I know people will want to leave The Zaku for arguably and objectively better gundams, but can we stick with this gundam for as long as possible. The Zaku memes call to me, and we can possibly mitigate some of the flaws in the design with pilot training and software upgrades.
You wake up again, to find...your door still closed. From what you can tell, the door will only open when you're actually fighting, so It's fine right now.
The only question is...What do you do now?
CHOOSE 2:

Interesting. Is the DC considered a pass/fail scenario or would we see certain effects if we rolled something dramatic? Say we fail and then we get a fight as opposed to a crit-fail where our opponent(s) is beyond us; either from experience, tech or protagonist armor.
On the other end, say we crit-succeed, would that result in some benefit like we make a friend who lockpicks our door? Or we get some kind of welcome home gift from our Gladiator Director?
