Humanity survived the Third Tiberium War at a great cost. But not even the loss of their homeworld could kill them. Now over two hundred years later the Turians fired on an unknown ship. They have no idea the mistake they just made.

16 BE - With the end of the Third Tiberium War the GDI turns its attention once again to reclamation and rebuilding efforts. This was hampered by the extreme numbers of political officials either killed by Kane's followers or compromised by Scrin infiltration units. As a result of this Blue Zone, 9 (South Eastern Australia) was put under the 'temporary' control of Commander Black for his success in defeating both Kane and the Scrin Invasion.

15 BE - Due to rapidly worsening conditions The Commander sends a research team to the remains of a forward base near an area where the worst of the Scrin conflict occurred.

14 BE - The final report from the science team is received and it is damning. Ecological collapse is accelerating. They projected that earth will no longer be able to support human life within twenty to thirty years. Looking at the political situation The Commander decides to seal the report rather than passing it on to central command. He then ordered his scientists to focus their attention on to the Scrin craft's means of propulsion.

13 BE - The Commander begins "Operation Self Sustainability" which he promotes as a plan to enhance the Blue zones' ability to protect its citizens from Tiberium contamination as well as the number of people they can safely house through the use of specially designed domes and sonic generators. To ensure his operation did not affect the financing of other blue zones he requisitioned four M.A.R.V.s (Mammoth Armored Reclamation Vehicle) as well as launching a massive production run of harvesters. These were used them to open paths to strip nearby yellow zones of as much raw materials as possible.

12 BE - Concerns were raised over the effect of The Commander's policies as it was feared that he might provoke riots in the nearby yellow zones. To allay these concerns the commander invited the ZOCOM command to oversee these operations and even went so far as to base them inside one of the domes under construction.

11 BE - Several new databanks containing complete records of all NOD technology and research Were found near reclamation operations in the Yellow zones. These data banks not only included the raw data but included the personal notes from the various scientists. These data banks were notably free of any Nod emblems or markings instead each of them bore a single phrase written on the side. "Humanity Suffero".
Harvesting operations began to find unexpected previously prepared stockpiles of materials ready to be sent back to base in the yellow zones.

10 BE - The Commander launches new "Trans Atmospheric Harvesters" (T.A.H.s) claiming that their purpose was to clear orbital debris from the war. This debris was beginning to deorbit and posed a threat to several blue zones.
The Commander also turned down offers from several council back companies to help with the "Operation Self Sustainability" stating that he had enough engineers and that their efforts would be better put to use in other blue zones. In response, the council requested the plans for "Operation Self Sustainability" dome design which The Commander provided.

8 BE - The Commander releases the design for a zero-emission power plant, in this case, zero-emissions referred to it releasing no Tiberium contamination. He orders all power plants in his zone to be upgraded to this new standard.
This is also the year that Tiberium spread began to restrict food production in most blue zones. In response, the Commander ordered a large number of "clean" farms and Parks to be domed.

6 BE - Food riots begin in a number of blue zones as farmland is corrupted by Tiberium. Several differences are noted between the domes nearing completion in Blue Zone 9 and those in other blue zones. When the Commander was asked he blamed the differences on construction companies cutting costs with the designs.
This year was also when the domes in Blue Zone 9 began to receive their population. Every person and all materials allowed entrance to the domes were first screened intensively for Tiberium contamination.

4 BE - Food riots continue to intensify worldwide with the sole exception of Blue Zone 9. Oddities were noted by the GDI council concerning the Commanders' behaviour resulting in The Commander being recalled to answer these questions but he was unable to comply as several Tiberium tainted hurricanes were spawned in the oceans around Australia.

3 BE - Several precision raids hit the world's genebanks. It was noted that these raids were carried out by what appeared to be Zone Raiders using Nod Stealth Technology.

2 BE - Communications was lost with Blue Zone 9 but due to global unrest no troops were available to investigate.
The construction of domes around the world suffers a series of disasters. Upon investigation, these were blamed on the plans missing vital sections of important technical information.

1 BE - Sensors sight a large unknown structure being constructed in orbit above Blue Zone 9. This structure did not respond to any form of communication.
Forces are sent to re-establish communication with Blue Zone 9 but contact was lost on route. The Commander is declared Rogue by the GDI council.

0 BE - Large-scale GDI forces are deployed to take Blue Zone 9 but to their surprise, the Domes begin to lift into orbit at their approach. The attacking commanders found that the T.A.H.s had disabled their orbital assets. This meant the dome once in orbit were beyond their reach.
The sole exception to this pattern was the central dome which had suffered damage to a power plant and was unable to launch on schedule with the other Domes.

Forces under the Commander launched a series of delaying attacks on the GDI armies succeeding in slowing them down but not by enough to ensure the safe launch of the last Dome.

Just before the GDI could attack the central dome directly they came under suicidal attack from all sides by mutants supported by what appeared to be scavenged NOD and GDI vehicles. These attacks while not doing much damage to the GDI forces did manage to bog them down long enough for repairs to be made and the central dome to launch.

As the dome launched a single transmission came from the forces attacking the GDI. It shows Marcion with obviously advanced Tiberium infestation. Marcion salutes the camera with a hand nearly completely consumed by Tiberium before uttering a single sentence "Humanity Suffero." The signal then cuts off as the command vehicle charges the GDI lines then detonates. By the time GDI forces reorganized from the loss of their commander, The Domes were out of their reach.

Several outlying Tiberium fields were noted to take off over the next several days all in places too far away for the GDI forces to find or intercept. During the same time period, the function of the orbital construction was discovered as various domes docked with it. The resulting station began to move away from earth slowly at first but continuously accelerating. The Tiberium field accelerated away from earth at a much higher rate and on a slightly different trajectory.

The remaining Domes quickly offloaded most of their population to the now named ARK Station before broadcasting back to earth on all frequencies. Commander Black opens the broadcast by apologizing for his failure. In his own words "I took the position of commander in the GDI to save all of humanity and our homeworld. In the end I failed that duty and was only able to save a small portion of the population and nearly nothing of our world."

He continued on to say that he would be colonizing Mars and that the domes still in orbit, as well as the remaining T.A.H.s, would remain to pick up as many people as the could before leaving earth orbit. He then openly transmitted the findings of his scientists that he had received all those years before.

This caused open panic in the blue zones which prevented the GDI forces from intercepting the T.A.H.s during their final earth to orbit transits. It was noted that while the T.A.H.s picked up people they did not allow possessions on board. This was by The Commanders' orders to both prevent Tiberium contamination as well as to stymie any potential saboteurs.

Once the Domes were filled the Commander made one last broadcast. The broadcast was short and there is no surviving record of the reaction of those on earth.

It opened to the Commander in full dress uniform saluting the camera with Taps playing in the background. He then spoke two sentences. Those sentences were "I promise you this is not the end of humanity. As a brave man once said before giving his life to give us a chance 'Humanity Suffero', Humanity Endures."

This event later comes to be called the Exodus and is used as the starting point of their new calendar.

1 PE - The Tiberium fields reach Mars orbit where most of them were used to seed Deimos with Tiberium. The remaining fields were placed in the outer orbit of Mars.

3 PE - ARK Station arrives in Mars orbit. The T.A.H.s are split between the construction of habitation domes and underground facilities on Mars and harvesting the outer orbit Tiberium fields. To prevent Tiberium from contaminating Mars no T.A.H. that harvests Tiberium ever enters Mars atmosphere and all resources generated from them are screened dozens of times before being shipped down to Mars.

5 PE - The first series of Mars domes were completed and the population begins to be moved planetside.

10 PE - Most of the population was now housed on Mars. Those that remain in orbit do so to maintain and run the Tiberium industry.

11 PE - Military observers tasked with watching earth in case of pursuers witness multiple nuclear explosions. No new radio traffic is observed from Earth after that point.

12 PE - The Commander publicly and officially recognizes that earth is a dead world and tries to tender his resignation for his actions. His resignation is refused by the population.

To quote his second in command "With the deepest respect, Sir. You bloody well got us this far, like hell I'm letting you quit halfway. Now get back to work and finish the damned job."

21 PE - The Domes containing wildlife parks are detached from the ARK and integrated into a series of massive domes that became the seed for the now-famous "Terran Preserves" of Mars. These domes continue to be tended and expanded to this day.

30 PE - Humanity experiences a massive population boom. The Commander welcomes his first grandchild to Mars.

32 PE - Commander Black is finally allowed to pass the reigns of government on. The new civilian government makes "Humanity Suffero" the governments' motto and promise to make it a reality.

38 PE - Ex-Commander Black passes away in his sleep at the age of 93.

42 PE - A fleet of specially modified T.A.H.s was built and tasked with searching the system's asteroid fields for ice-rich asteroids and returning them to Mars orbit for processing. Waste material is dumped on Deimos for Tiberium conversion.

52 PE - An abandoned alien outpost was discovered on Mars causing fear that Humanity is about to come under attack again. Military production and recruitment were stepped up.

53 PE - The alien outpost is dated to have been abandoned sometime in humanity's prehistory relieving fears of immediate attack but causing concern over what had happened to the builders. Several storage chambers of an unknown material are discovered. Due to the level of containment already used on the material, it is decided to leave it sealed until the data banks are decrypted.

54 PE - The outer orbit Tiberium field brought from earth was finally depleted. Tiberium harvesting operation now focuses on Deimos.

55 PE - Scientists manage to partially decrypt the data banks. The material was Identified as Eezo although the engineers began calling it "Magic Space Rock" once its properties were unlocked.

63 PE - Attempts to decrypt the data banks finished. While most of the information was too damaged to be recovered there was enough to jumpstart the development of Eezo based technology. More importantly, there were three major pieces of information recovered.

First, there was a galaxy-spanning network of relays that enabled FTL travel. Secondly The moon Chiron was actually one of the relays. And Finally that the aliens (now known to be the Proteans) were wiped out by hostile outside forces.

This information sparked chaos for years to come and humanity's reaction to it shaped humanity's future to this day.

64 PE - Due to the health risks even a small amount of eezo could cause in the limited human population eezo is classified as a hazardous material on the same level as weapon grade radioactive materials and is subjected to many of the same screening methods as Tiberium.

67 PE - Humanity's government put forth a multi-pronged plan for the future. First the development of long-range spacecraft would be prioritized both using Scrin technology as well as eezo. While that was ongoing the military would be updated and a significant portion of humanities production would be set aside to maintain that status as well as provide the needed material for orbital building, Once both those goal were reached two groups of long-range scouts would be sent out to survey for habitable planets as well as resource-rich systems. The first would use Scrin deprived drives to search away from the relay network while the second fleet using Eezo drives would begin searching the relay network for the same.

Due to fear of an enemy reverse-engineering their technology a policy of incorporating self-destruct devices in all spaceships is put into place.

69 PE - A plan for static orbital defenses is put forward by students of The First Engineering College of Mars. The plan involved four separate types of defensive satellites linked to a heavily armed and armored Orbital Fortress. This formation would be known as "The Human Fist" after the Human/Turian War. The satellites making up this formation were a mix between those armed with missiles, those armed with Ion cannon, those armed with mass drivers, and finally those armed with laser weaponry based on NODs Obelisk of Light.

Upon receiving these plans the military pushed for their implementation until they were successful. To quote Treasurer Ethan Boil "I never thought a military man would use puppy eyes while asking for something but I swear I was faced with the entire upper echelon of our military doing just that."
Also, Humanity's emphasis on expanding its numbers is pushed to an even greater level. This resulted in the average becoming 5 children per family.

72 PE - Mars's orbital defense network is completed. A similar network is started around Earth as a militarily vital strategic resource.

74 PE - Earth's defensive network completed. Chiron defensive satellites are built but not put in place until after the Chiron relay is activated.

91 PE - The first two scout fleets are completed. Each fleet is composed of four ships. Chiron Relay is activated and its defences are put in place. The scout fleets are dispatched. Construction of colony ships as well as armed escorts is started.

93 PE - Alpha Centauri is classified to possess a habitable planet. A colony ship with escorts is dispatched to colonize the world along with the necessary defensive satellites to create a minimal defensive network. They also take a small amount of Tiberium to seed on a small and otherwise useless moon.

This pattern of behaviour is continued until contact with the council races.

197 PE - Shanxi is colonized.

211. PE - A Turian patrol group encounters a human scout fleet opening Relay 314 and opening fire on the then-unknown ships. The reason for this choice is unknown as the admirals' flagship is destroyed in the resulting brief but fierce firefight along with three of the human ships and five Turian escort ships.

Editorial note: For those not familiar with the ancient earth tongue called Latin the phrase Humanity Suffero roughly translates to Humanity Endures.

Earth's Situation at the end and Commanders Actions:
Earth's Situation at the end and Commanders Actions:

One last explanation post concerning the situation with earth and the GDI that prompted the Commanders actions at the end.

First one must understand the term "promoted to incompetence". This is the tendency of a successful individual in an organization to be promoted until they can no longer fulfil the needs of their position.

This was the situation at the start of the third Tiberium war in GDI's government after Nods opening decapitation strike. Note I said the start of the war as the war dragged on Nod kept up this successful tactic meaning much of the civilian government was operating not just at their level of "promoted to incompetence" but several levels beyond that.

Then the Scrin arrived with their units not only DEDICATED to taking out powerful individuals but mind-controlling anyone who stepped in to fix a problem.

In my view, much of the government was operating with the equivalent of sergeants trying to be generals with a staff made up of people who have just finished massively cut down boot camp.

This combined with the absurdly short time scale he had to work with meant the Commander felt he could not risk the future of humanity on the off chance that a bunch of amateurs would suddenly become the most efficient t government professionals in history.

That said he never sabotaged ANYTHING he gave the rest of humanity. The faulty domes were caused by politicians and corporations cutting corners as the only thing he left out of the blueprints he gave them was the lift engines. They just used him as a scapegoat for their corruption and in a way cemented his decision not to trust them.

Even then he made sure to cram as many people into his escape plan as physically possible.

On Turian Government in this story:
On Turian Government in this story:

As I have had to explain my use of terms already I think I should explain how I see the turian government as this directly affects why/how the Councillor and Palaven's Primarch were blindsided by Admiral Varrus Cher'il's actions.

Having played the games I was left with a feeling that the Turian's had Three main 'lines' of authority.

Councillor/Palaven's Primarch: These two, and their staff, set the tone not just in their interaction with the rest of the galaxy as well as their duties such as "We will patrol 'this' area" or "we will support this action" but have very little authority to direct more detailed action.

Primarchs: These Turians seem to handle the actual day-to-day governance of the turian people as well as allocation of military resources. While they seem to be in control of military policy they do not actually control how active operations are carried out.

Active Miltary Commands: I place those in command of actual operation separately as it seems that until they are finished or they infringe on what other races would consider 'civilian' sectors of society turians in a military operation do not need to tell SHIT to anyone and often will not until they are finished or need resupply/reinforcement.

Explanation of term usage in this story.
Explanation of term usage in this story.
In response to the amount of technical blowback I have gotten about my use of terms (which by the way put me off writing this for a while.) I have decided to directly inform the readers of my usages for this story.

First Ship Classes:

Combat ships:

Missle/Torpedoboat: These are humanities 'standard' system defence ships. They usually mount a single primary weapons system (the missile or torpedo in their name) and a few CIWS for point defence. Usually, these crafts are manned by between eight and fifteen people. They also tend to be very cheap to produce.

Their main drawback, other than their low military 'punch' is that they tend to rely almost completely on locating facilities for maintenance and rearmament meaning that colonies only start deploying them after second phase infrastructure has been built.

Frigate: Usually the smallest True military ship deployed in offensive operations. Frigates are the most common ships to be used as escorts due to their high speed, good CWIS coverage and firepower ratio compared to their size and cost. That said they pay for their speed and firepower with much weaker armour and shielding systems as well as pathetic (by sci-fi space naval standards) sensor, and EW abilities.

Destroyer: The destroyer is sometimes called the Frigates big brother. They are both notably larger than frigates and trade some of their speed for better Sensor and CIWS and are often used to provide sensor and targeting support to frigates when more ships with powerful systems are not in the area.

Cruisers: The workhorse of both Terrian and Turian Navies Cruisers are designed to mix speed with range, endurance and firepower, and are expected to be able to outrun any ship they can't out-fight.

A notable difference between human cruisers and those fielded by council races is the fact that human-built cruisers often carry a pair of fighter or strike craft along with their normal weapon systems.

Battle Cruisers: Are a notable subclass of cruisers where speed and several subsystems are trimmed back to allow both more armour and shields as well as heavier weapons.

While technically the smallest ship to be referred to as a capital ship most admirals prefer to skip it entirely due to cost/performance ratios not coming out in its favour most of the time. That said they do produce a noticeable punch to manpower ratio compared to other capital ships.

Battleship: The preferred Capital ship of the council races when Dreadnuagts are not viable. Battleships are built to both give and take a pounding and are capable of soaking massive amounts of damage, for their size, while utterly wrecking large numbers of smaller ships. They pay for this with heavily reduced speeds though leaving them to rely on their defences to survive battles.

Dreadnought: This is where the ship designations diverge notably between the council races and humanity.

The council races use the main spinal gun as the defining feature of a dreadnought.

As noted by their codex "Dreadnoughts are kilometer-long capital ships mounting heavy, long-range firepower. They are only deployed for the most vital missions. A dreadnought's power lies in the length of its main gun. Dreadnoughts range from 800 meters to one kilometer long, with a main gun of commensurate length."

Humanity uses a different metric. They define a dreadnought not only by its size but also by its capabilities. Human dreadnoughts are not only capable of deal with battleships the same way battleships deal with destroyers and cruisers but also boast a speed comparable to a cruiser.

Carrier: Unique to humanity's navy Carriers are ships whose size ranges between that of a cruiser and a dreadnought with no main gun but strong CIWS. Their main purpose is to launch and resupply large amounts of fighters and strike craft.

Support Ships:

Supply freighter: These ships are dedicated to the movement of large amounts of non-living materials. Often little more than a small bridge with attached living space coupled with a massive cargo compartment and engine. These ships are of little to no use in the movement of people as their life support systems are often only capable of supporting less than a dozen people.

Troop Transports: These are a variation of Supply freighter whose cargo is has been designed for the transport of large numbers of ground troops. While never truly comfortable they are able to support their passengers between distant battlefronts and contain the shuttles needed to deploy them upon arrival.

Heavy Troop Transport: Larger than a normal Troop transport Heavy Troop transports actually carry less troops. Instead the 'Heavy' in their name refers to their ability to support troops in heavy combat.

These ships contain both large supplies of raw materials as well as large fabrication systems able to completely refurbish and resupplying their cargo's needs and equipment in a wide variety of environments outside of nutritional requirements.

A Heavy Troop Transport can completely revamp/refurbish the equipment of its troop compliment from that needed for burning magma world to that needed for an ice world or even vacuum operations in the space of a week as long as it has the raw materials.

This means that several Heavy Troop Transports are usually attached to Turian long-distance patrols to lessen the logistical burden.

Conflicting usage by Characters:

You may notice several characters using the same terms for different things. This is not a mistake especially when they are from different races. In real life, a word can have a variety of meanings depending on the context/profession/culture. this is even more pronounced when dealing with multiple races.

Force Discrepancies:

One thing to keep in mind when you see the numbers in loss reports and humanity's losses seem minor is that humanity uses what the council would consider an UNGODLY high amount of automation in everything.

Some ship crews on the human side are between 1/4 and 1/10 that of a council ship of the same class/size as a result and on the ground humanity uses a disproportionate amount of drones and fixed defences.

The Tiberium Effect: Shots Fired.
The Tiberium Effect: Shots Fired.

General Desolas Arterius cursed Admiral Varrus Cher'il to the void and beyond, not only had the barefaced moron insisted that they would be facing "weak and ineffectual savages" despite the fact that is was the destruction of a patrol groups "Flagship" by a mere talon of small ships that triggered this policing action but he failed to find anything strange when the scouts he sent through the relay failed to report back. Instead of seeing this as a sign that something had happened to them, he ordered the fleet through the relay while only in partial formation.

On arriving on this side of the relay that breach of fleet protocol actually saved some lives as a full quarter of the fleet arrived outside the kill zone that the locals had established. The locals had built a stationary defence web at the normal arrival point near the relay. This web cost them dearly as it destroyed a full 6% of the fleet in the ensuing chaos. Included among the lost was a full quarter of their capital ships and four heavy transport ships ending the lives of over nine thousand Turian soldiers before they had even reached the enemy world.

Finally showing proper Turian discipline, Amiral Cher'il had the remaining ship form up for battle before proceeding toward the planet carefully. As the fleet reached orbit a detailed sensor range a second defensive web around the planet. This web was heavier than the one at the relay but looked to be incomplete as there were "weak sections" in its coverage. One of these sections seemed to cover a secondary spaceport. The fleet also picked up a large asteroid in extreme orbit composed mostly of a strange unknown form of crystal and that had been heavily industrialized. The sixth division was detailed to capture and secure for later investigation.

While the fleet elements duelled with the natives' defences to clear the way for the transport the fleet began to lose sensor contact with the targets ground side despite this the army elements were ordered to deploy planetside. This was the first sign of what the troops would come to call the "Ghost Towers" that would cost so many lives.

As ground troops deployed from the fleet and approached the designated landing zone all the sensors went insane with false readings and sensor ghosts. It was so bad that the transports had to land using only visual data. This both marked and masked the opening shots of the ground battle as the transports came under fire by what was later revealed to be infantry portable anti-air weaponry. While these attacks failed to destroy any of the transports a disturbing number were grounded due to hull breaches making them unspaceworthy.

Upon deploying from the transports they did not find the secondary spaceport promised by the admiral but instead a half-finished industrial district. While this did give us room to disembark it also provided enough broken terrain that the outskirts of the landing site would become the site of near-constant skirmishes and ambushes but that came later.

At the time we were directed to where the fleet had detected a large power source before losing the signal. That had been the first we heard about the fleet's sensors losing contact with the targets ground side. Still, we carried on until we came under a series of odd hit and run attacks. At first, I thought this was unlead and disorganized resistance using whatever weapons they had at hand. It was only when these attacks escalated and the weapons that had hit hardest in previous attacks were being used almost exclusively did we realize that the earlier attacks had been to test which of their weapons were most effective against us. The weapon we faced most often from then on was a spirit damned laser pistol. Yes, these "primitive savages" of Varrus's had handheld D.E.W.s powerful enough to cut down my troops.

If that wasn't enough as we approached the target area we started to experience extreme levels of sensor and com interference. By the time we reached the area of expected conflict, our coms range was reduced to a mere score or so kilometres. This gutted our command infrastructure as it meant that commanders either had to be well within the area of conflict personally or they had to delegate uncomfortable amounts to the command decisions to the local leadership.

All this proved costly when we arrived at the area where we were told the power plant was. We did not see any buildings at all and we came under sustained fire from unseen sources. It was only due to one of the engineers running unsanctioned scans through the forward tank's systems that we found out that our opposition had spirit damned ACTIVE OPTICAL CAMO. Once these scans located a target the targeting data was sent to all local forces allowing them to use HUD overlays to fire back at the aggressors. The aggressors not only included infantry but also a mixture of automated turrets. The problem was that our scans were only effective at a range of a hundred meters at most.

Despite all this, we pushed on and I almost wish we had not as midway through the battle the turrets we had believed destroyed reactivated opening fire into the rear of my troops. While we did already have their locations we had to detail nearly a quarter of our remaining infantry to suppress these turrets for the rest of the battle. After the battle in-depth scanning of the area revealed the presence of nodes connected to the turrets and it was only with the destruction of these nodes did the turrets stop being repaired and reactivated.

Moving closer to the target area a single structure was seen even though only by the naked eye all our systems insisted that it was not there. Looking like a bastardization of Salarian and Haner art standing several stories tall it was quickly deemed to be the source of the interference and targeted for destruction. My forces faced increased resistance as the approached the tower but they finally brought it down. It is at this point that the cloaking fell and we got our first clear view of the enemy. I am ashamed at the reaction of my forces when it was revealed how few enemies we been facing and at my own failure to reign them in resulting in my forces not taking any prisoners for interrogation.

In the end, we had taken what would later turn out to be fifty infantry and a single lightly defended powerplant all at the cheap price of the lives of eighty-two Turian infantry and an even dozen light tanks complete with their crews as well as over a hundred injured. While a heavy price to pay on the first day of conflict we learned that it was indeed cheap, at least compared to the price these "humans" would demand of us for any more 'victories' we achieved over the next week.

I have already sent my request for reinforcements back to command and I am compiling this in case I am KIA before they arrive as they enemy is devoting a high level of effort to remove any and all commanders from effective service.

I have also attached a list of Admiral Varrus Cher'il's orders as well as the tactical data surrounding them to this message. So that if I am dead by the time this is over someone else will have the information to court marshal the barefaced son of a Pyjak for his extreme incompetence.

-Codex Entry-

-Disruptor Towers: An improvement on the towers of the same name from the Tiberium wars these towers not only cloak surrounding buildings and units from both visual and electronic detection but also fill all communications in the area with a static reducing all coms to a very short range of effectiveness without the correct filtering systems.

These towers one limitation is that they can not apply the optical camouflage to themselves making them vulnerable to on-site location and destruction.

-Reaper Hand Lasers: The L.H.897 Valentine Hand Laser often referred to as the "Reaper Hand Lasers" by its users is a low-powered variant of the weapons used by NOD shadow teams during the Tiberium Wars. This model was typically deployed in a higher percentage to security forces during the early stages of colonization as it requires little maintenance and it replaces ammunition with an easily recharged powerpack while simplifies and reduces the costs of maintaining an armed force on the developing colony.

-Sleeper Turret: A series of three to four autonomous weapon turrets slaved and connected to a center node sleeper turrets make up the majority of emplaced defences in civilian areas as they spend most of their time folded up and inactive. The node not only handles the targeting data for the turrets but also uses a limited form of nanite technology to repair them if the turrets are damaged in combat. Due to differences in weapon handling the turrets linked each node must be of the same type.

The Tiberium Effect: Hollowed Ships

Admiral Varrus Cher'il POV

Day 2:

Admiral Varrus Cher'il cursed the targeting computer, the engineers who built his ships and most of all the spirit damned savages and their cursed orbital defences. Somehow the simpletons who were running the ECM and ECCM systems were being beaten by some single world savages. They were being overmatched to the point that the fleet could not use the superior range their weapon possessed due to their mastery of Mass Effect due to the ship's targeting systems refusing to believe that there were targets out there unless they moved to point-blank range.

That said the Ground pounders from the army had been landed without much trouble and if things go as normal he can start to ignore their complaints that they did not have perfect maps of the landing site within the hour. How hard was it for the army officers to understand that long-distance initial scans do not produce detailed maps. They always spend the first few hours complaining about the quality of the maps so Varrus usually saved time and just ignored their first few messages as they are all the same to the point he can repeat them in his sleep.

Day 3:

The ground-pounders were still sending him reports on the inaccuracy of the maps provided. Varrus needed to read the first line each time to know that he could ignore the message. It was not like there was going to be anything of note in them as it was obvious that the primitives had focused all their efforts for a long time into their static defence grid around the planet so they will have nothing of note on the ground.

Also, he had finally finished dispatching a splinter force of the army to that strangely developed crystal asteroid. It was ridiculously defended and even with the dedicated support to two frigates they had lost two shuttles and a third would not be lifting off from its landing site until repairs are made to the main engines.

The officer on the ground, Sergeant Frizze had reported that all the defences encountered on the ground were facing inward save for the anti-ship guns. He would report further once the complex was secured. That said he is already requesting the deployment of an engineer detachment to investigate as he has seen several layers of decontamination stations but nothing that should require even basic decontamination He will have to wait until the ground side battle is finished as the engineers are deployed with them.

Day 7:

How in the name of all the Spirits are the primitives defences still up? The kinetic weapons platforms or at least the missile platform could not have contained enough ammunition to keep up their rate of fire even if they were using mass effect technology but somehow they were STILL FIRING. The fleet had lost a couple of escorts so far and even the frigates were starting to show signs of damage. If these savages had had a glimmer of tactical wisdom and invested even a fraction of their output to create mobile units to go with their static defences things would have been worse but they hadn't proved, once again, Turian superiority.

Even as he watched a wave of missiles detonated just outside the shields of The Dutiful Advance bringing them down just long enough to allow one of the savage's primitive's ballistic weapons to destroy its starboard maneuvering thrusters. At this rate, their numbers will whittle away his honoured ships before long before he can clear the orbit of the planet.

Turning away from the viewscreen Admiral Varrus Cher'il leaves the bridge. He has a report to write and a request for reinforcement to submit even if it leaves a bad taste in his mouth not to be able to finish the job himself.

Day 10:

Having shifted his remaining ships over the army's landing site had saved the remains of his fleet. The loss of both Honors Shield and The Memory Of Hiala both frigates had severely reduced his fleets' combat potential. Even a day later he did not know just how they had died as their shields were at full power when they had exploded. Despite intensive study, the sensor data had so far revealed nothing. At least from this position, his ships could still provide some cover for the army.

That said the number of dead and wounded coming back on the supply shuttles was inexcusable. Once the planet was pacified he would see the incompetent brought up on charges.

-Codex Entry-

-ASEMS Bots: Also called Boombots, Those Finicky Bastards, The Electodunces and other unflattering names by the engineers who have had to work with them the ASMES series are small (roughly the size of a human torso) autonomous robotic weapons that drift through space at low power and bypass enemy shield due to their low speed. Once the pass-through a shield they activate and the bots dumb A.I. directs it to locate a power conduit and drill through the hull and attach itself to the conduit before discharging all remaining power into it.

As the bot is 90% power generation and storage by mass this usually fries all connected systems. If the ship has a mass effect drive and there is insufficient surge protection between the ASEMS bot and the drive core this usually results in the core going critical.

The Tiberium Effect: A Question Of Duty
The Tiberium Effect: A Question Of Duty

-General Williams POV-

Waking from his latest medically mandated rest period or as he liked to think of it, his "take a nap or the medics will sedate you" time, General Williams checked on how the fronts were faring.

In space, the unknowns had consolidated their fleet in the hole they had punched in the defensive network. While this did restrict the area that they were operating in it put them beyond the reach of anything he could currently bring to bare save the ASEMS Bots and the stealth capable T.A.H.s needed to deploy them had been run until their stealth systems were literally ragged supplying the defence net with missiles and solid slug munitions. The engineers and maintenance personnel he tried to use them for anything else it would become a question of "When" not "If" the systems failed within sight of the enemy. If that happened he would lose the ability to supply the orbital defences entirely. That said at least he knew "where" the enemy fleet was, even if that was providing overwatch and resupply to the invading army.

On the ground, matters were both better and worse. There at least his forces had slowed them to a crawl while inflicting lopsided casualties. The problem with that was they were not lopsided enough. He was losing roughly one man for every ten enemy combatants he took off the field and it was estimated that he needed double that or he would lose. The problem was not actual manpower as he had a number of veterans and volunteers he could draw upon but rather armament. The enemy had some kind of energy shielding that despite all logic blocked solid munitions but did nothing against laser weapons and while he did have a supply of Reapers on hand they were already deployed, all he had left were either solid slug or explosive weapons which had already proved to be ineffectual.

As it was he had to order only limited skirmishing actions against the invaders and he lacked dedicated skirmish units. Pulling up the list of units and their deployments he noted that one of the invader's fronts was advancing faster than the others. Pulling up the after-action reports from the front he noticed the whichever commander was in charge was proving more competent than the rest. He has spread repeater units throughout his units to keep in contact with the front and was making use of what appeared to be engineering units to find cloaked assets and ensuring that the engineers were protected.

This behaviour was letting his forces advance with far fewer losses than the other invading forces and was making it difficult to harass them but it did have one downside. That was that it allowed the commander to lead his troops from behind the battle lines. This meant that if he could get some of his forces behind the invader's lines he could potentially remove this effective commander before these practices spread to the rest of the invading forces. The enemy was not stupid and was leading from inside an armoured personnel carrier. This would protect him from the hand help laser William's forces were using but the colony did have a complement of Black Earth Flamers that had been used to clear the initial colony site. It would be essentially a suicide mission but Williams did not think he would have any trouble gaining volunteers. The question was if it was necessary and if he was willing to give the order.

Putting aside that question for the moment General Williams moved on to the strategic projections, soon he had his answer to his earlier question. While most of the front would hold until all but the most pessimistic estimate for the arrival time for reinforcements if this commander's forces were not halted they would breach the inner defence line a full week before any reinforcement force could possibly arrive in system.

Pulling out a small pic-screen from a desk drawer General Williams looked at the picture of his wife and children. His son was safe on Mars and he had been planning on surprising him by taking leave so he could attend the birth of his first grandchild. His wife and daughter, on the other hand, were not that far away from combat being in one of the emergency bunkers under New Taiyuan.

Putting the picture away he began to write out the orders. His little girl would reach her sixteenth birthday, even if he dammed himself to make it possible.

-Saren Arterius POV-

Saren chaffed at being relegated to supply duties on board the "Duty's Valor" and hangar loading duty at that. Sure this was his first posting but his brother was the general of the ground forces, didn't that show that he could be trusted in actual combat. Looking up as another shuttle arrived Saren when to help unload the wounded and dead which had come to make up the near total of everything brought up from the spirit dammed planet.

The first sign he had that something was different was when he was handed a specialty hull cutter normally used to remove heavily damaged armour plating from tanks, then instead of the usual medical staff entering first several heavy haulers were brought up and attached to the shuttle's cargo. What they pulled out could just be recognized as once being A.P.C.s.

Moments after the wrecks were clear of the shuttle the order was given to get them open. While Saren moved to the door of the nearest and started cutting he wondered how long it would have taken to literally slag the armour of the vehicle and how someone was able to keep it from moving away from the heat source before it failed.

His mussing was cut short as the door gave way in a wave of hot smoke reeking of charred flesh and he stumbled back. This was not because of the smell or heat but because a charred turian body fell out onto him. A body that was unrecognizable save for the name and rank engraved on it.

This was the body of General Desolas Arterius, his brother.

-Codex Entry-

- Black-earth Flamers: Based on the Black Hand Flamers of old terra the Black-earth flamer is oddly enough not a weapon of war. Its primary purpose is to clear areas of highly invasive or aggressive plant growth or insect hives. (See "Occidental Strangler Vines", "Shanxi Cadavor Ants "and "Bocidia Blood Burrower Hives") That said it can still be used to disturbing effect as a weapon in extreme situations as seen during the first contact war.

-Humanity's Divergent Classification Of War Crimes: For the most part Humanity holds to a standard of wartime ethics equal and in some cases even superior to the other Citadel races. That said there is one glaring exception that continues to be a source of much friction between Humanity and the Turians. That being that if faced with an enemy bent of the eradication or genocide of humanity (and later any allied race) any action that is taken to preserve human (or allied) lived that only affects the aggressors will be considered justified and not a war crime.

The most infamous of the times this has been put into action was when General Williams order the use of flame weapons on the invading Turians at Shanxi. While normally ordering the use of flamers on sentients would be considered a war crime but Admiral Varrus Cher'il's aggressive attack combined with his forces never trying to make contact and a lack of orders to try and take prisoners resulted in the human military finding that General Williams had just cause to believe he was facing a genocidal enemy and therefore was fully justified and in the right to use whatever means he could to protect the civilians under his care. As such they blocked all attempts of the Citadel and more exactly the Turians at having General Williams censored or punished for his actions.

The Tiberium Effect: Storm-Heralds
The Tiberium Effect: Storm-Heralds

-Admiral Blackbair POV -

Admiral Blackbair was no fool, he knew his patrol fleet would not be enough to break the siege of Shanxi by itself but there was one thing he and his ships could do. That is to gather information on the invaders' space capabilities before the main relief fleet arrives. With that in mind, he gave his orders.

His patrol ships responded with admirable precision. While several ships hung back to insure the results made it back to the relief fleet if the worse happened the rest of the patrol dived into harass the enemy fleet.

For the next week, his patrol ships clashed with the invading fleet. It quickly became clear that the Reaper frigates fared poorly against this enemy as they did not use much in the way of missile weapons and their fighter escort was far less than what a human fleet would consider acceptable. As such the Reaper class ship would have to close to unacceptably close range to have any chance of doing damage to the enemy.

The hammerheads fared better their heavier weapon proved capable of pounding their way through the enemy defences giving the admiral precious information on said defences. And it was precious if for no other reason than the number of lives it cost to acquire. While the Hammerheads could breach the enemy's ships their slow speed meant that to do so they had to expose themselves to their foes main guns resulting in the loss of most of the patrols Hammerheads.

Surprisingly the most effective ship class among the patrol was the Trojan frigates. Its single main gun may have seemed like a disadvantage at first but between its high speed and maneuverability and high rate of fire, these frigates were able to pick off any invading ship that strayed too far out of its protective formation.

With this information was sent back to the relief fleet Admiral Blackbair ordered the remains of his patrol to hang back from the enemy fleet to keep an eye on them as well as, hopefully, cut off any incoming enemy reinforcements.

-Lieutenant Colonel Tre'vel POV-

Lieutenant Colonel Tre'vel was uneasy with the situation his battalion found itself in. This was due to the fact that the situation on the strange asteroid was getting strange the more they investigated. Sergeant Frizze had sent their initial report back to the fleet before they headed deeper into the structures.

There they found more of the inward-facing defences and it was beginning to feel like every second or third room was a decontamination chamber of an odd design. With that said the defences completely ignored his troopers as they advanced which was a blessing as without the access codes they had to disable the decontamination chambers as they advanced.

Responding to a com call from Sergeant Frizze, Tre'vel confirmed that Frixxe and his squad were returning to the main camp set up in what used to have been a large warehouse. Oddly enough the warehouse had clearly been designed to be easily defended. Frizze sounded tired over the com and even sounded like he was developing a cough. Tre'vel wondered if this was why there was so much effort put into decontamination on the asteroid and notified the battalion's medics to prepare to do a full rundown on Frizze and his squad.

He had sent Frizze and his squad to gather samples of the crystal the Aliens were harvesting both in its raw and processed forms. They had obviously dedicated massive amounts of time and resources to harvest it so it may be of use to the Hierarchy.

As Sergeant Frizze and his squad came into sight Lieutenant Colonel Tre'vel and his troops were surprised when sirens began to wail loud enough to physically stun those closest to them.

Before he and his troops could recover the previously dormant, and believed to be inactive or disconnected from the power grid, turrets came online and swung to target Sergeant Frizze and his squad.

Before the eyes of his troopers, Sergeant Frizze and his squad were suddenly reduced to a fine mist as the defences opened fire with what his omni-tool later informed him was nothing but concentrated sound.

Before the remains of Sergeant Frizze and his squad could even begin to settle to the ground Te'vel's sight was cut off as previously missed bulkheads slammed down in his have. As his troops scramble into formation to the sound of more bulkheads dropping Tre'vel knew that getting out of the complex would not be as easy as entering.

-Codex Entry-

-Reaper Frigate: Reaper frigates are, by council standards, an oddity. Longer and thinner than most ships of its class it possesses extremely high power generation and targeting arrays as well as a higher degree of mobility. What it is noticeably lacking is any form of main gun instead, it boasts multiple banks of CIWS and anti-fighter weapons. Its role in battle is usually to use its mobility to place itself between the fleets' capital-ship and enemy fighters and missiles destroying them before they have a chance to threaten the fleets' heavier ships.

-Hammerhead Frigate: Hammerhead Frigates were named for their application in battle. While possessing a low amount of CIX systems the Hammerhead's primary function is to hammer down the enemy's defences. To carry out this job it features an oversized and nearly flat bow. This bow boasts four main guns, two Mass Effect based mass drivers which fire three-pound metal spikes, a battleship laser cannon and finally a third-generation plasma launcher.

The power needs of these heavy weapons meant that despite its triple power generator set up the Hammerhead is slower than most of its size class and often must rely on reapers for anti-fighter support.

-Trojan Frigate: The workhorse of the frigate class, the Trojan frigate was considered to be under-armed by many in the navy until the first contact war. Boasting only a single main gun and a low level of anti-fighter weaponry the Trojan made up of this in four ways.

First, the Trojan had a smaller mass than the Hammerhead despite using the same propulsion systems resulting in a far higher level of maneuverability and speed.

Second, due to not needing to power multiple weapon systems the Trojans shielding systems has more power to operate which they used to run a second set of redundancy shield emitters.

Third, The main gun of the Trojan was designed to be modular and easily swapped out depending on the mission parameters. This meant that the Admiralty was able to swap out the Trojans' less effective mass driver guns for more effective laser and plasma weaponry early into the conflict with the Turians. This load has become the mainstay due to continued conflict with a number of "pirate" groups all of whom use mass effect shielding.

Finally, The Trojan class is one of humanity's cheapest ships for their class both in materials and manpower. Due to their simplicity, the Trojan class costs just over two-thirds of the amount of most other frigates and its full complement is only a hundred and fifty. That said a Trojan can maintain a minimal level of functionality (though no combat ability) with a mere twenty fire crew member. This last fact meant that Humanity was able to recover and repair many ships the Turians had written off as unsalvageable during the contact war.

-Sonic Turrets Mark XX: Deployed in large numbers wherever Tiberium is located the Mark XX Sonic Turrets possess a 360 degree firing arch for their Sonic weaponry. This weaponry has been calibrated to render Tiberium crystals into a semi-inert form for periods of up to a week. As a side effect materials containing a high percentage of metallic compounds or water have a tendency to become violently aerosolized when targeted by the Mark XXs. One notable feature of the Mark XXs that made it more reliable then previous Marks was the vast improvement of its internal capacitors. Where previous marks could fire less than ten shots after being disconnected from a power source the Mark XXs internal capacitors held enough energy for fifty shots before running dry.

The Tiberium Effect: Messages
The Tiberium Effect: Messages

-Primarch Servitis Drusilus POV-

Turning from his omni-tool the Primarch of Palaven opened a channel to his secretary.

"Tiphus, I need you to inform the military high command that they have a high priority meeting with me first thing in the morning," he stated waiting just long enough to here her assent before turning back to reread the report on screen.

Servitis had to admit it was a masterful piece of writing combining the Salarian's love of technical terms with an Asari's knack for stroking the subject's ego, and the Hanar's complete confidence in their own opinion despite contradicting data topped off a Krogan's disregard for the rules.

In fact, it was only his years of political dealings with the aforementioned races that let him see the report for what it was, a piece of retroactive ass-covering combined with an attempt to bind the hierarchy into supporting the Cher'il family's newest "raising star" out of his latest blunder.

The report jumped from supposition to unsupported assumption only to contradict itself a few lines later. For example, the report states that the patrol encountered ships of "unknown design and origin" before starting that they opened fire on them due to their position next to the dormant relay "as directed by standard procedure on lawful enforcement of anti-relay tampering measures" which was a steaming load of varren shit. Those procedures began with determining the actions being taken by the ships and at least attempting to establish contact NOT opening fire with the com-net in lockdown.

Then there was the result of that bit of lunacy. Four of the unknown ships had destroyed the patrol's flagship, a destroyer class, two escorts and damaging six others before the two surviving ships could retreat with the fifth unknown destroyed before they even knew the Turians were there.

THEN the newly promoted "Admiral Varrus Cher'il", he would need to look up the paperwork and precedent for that promotion, had decided to order the remaining ships of the patrol to give chase through the relay instead of reporting back. Coming out of the jump they "ambushed" by the "declared enemies of the Turian people", though the report is suspiciously void of any information about the nature of the ambush by the "declared enemies of the Turian people". Which was more varren shit as if they were not identified they could not be "known and declared enemies" of anyone.

Here there was another jump in the report skillfully covered by two full paragraphs of jargon and references to ordinances and military codes that the primarch did not find applicable to the situation in any way despite pulling up and reading the aforementioned articles.

The report continues on to detail the damage dealt by the spaceborne fixed defences over the "known base of pirate and smuggling activity squatting on a planet in Turian space". Which it could not have been as it was in an uncharted and unclaimed system beyond a closed relay. These fixed defences being more than were deployed around both Palaven and the Krogan demilitarized zone combined.

Somehow Admiral Varrus Cher'il managed to deploy his ground side forces to "bring the primitive savages to compliance", again without providing any detail, like any coherent objectives or even who they were attacking. Then the report to mention anything else ground side thereafter but going by the request for reinforcement they were suffering heavy losses.

Despite all of this High had not only not recalled Admiral Varrus Cher'il but instead diverted over a hundred ships including a dreadnaught from their current duties as well as four full legions of ground troops complete with vehicles and heavy weaponry to support this attack on the unknowns.

While trying to piece together a coherent strategic sense of the mess, his omni-tool chimed. Glancing at the notification he was shocked to see it was a "Death Letter". While Servitis recognized the name of the deceased he was not someone whom he ever expected a personal letter from, let alone a Death Letter. Being someone's drill sergeant during boot camp tends to breed a certain amount of distance between people along with the necessary level of discipline.

Deciding that this could be important and that he needed something to clear his mind of the morass of a report he was working on, he opened the letter. What he read within made him see blue.

-Vihorth Ilzik POV-

Blinking he reread the data stream on his screen before comparing it to the one on his left. The Turian high command was ordering the redirection of large numbers of ships and troops to an empty area of space but this was the only mention of these actions on any of the data networks. In fact, the orders almost looked to be avoiding the usual command channels.

Digging deeper he noticed a breach in normal Turian procedures. A patrol fleet had ordered an information blackout on its casualty lists and the order was signed by the "Admiral on-site" despite such fleets normally being led by a commodore.

As he began to compile this discrepancy Ilzik hesitated momentarily. While he currently lacked the necessary data points to produce a conclusion this was the type of data that may need immediate action despite or even because of that lack.

Quickly encrypting his current data and observation Ilzik sent the data pack to both the Dalatrass Council and Councilor Aetann Dinmorn.

Turning back to his screen Ilzik started to hum the newest Asari pop song as he once again scanned the incoming data streams for data points. Ilzik loved his job, sure it was not as likely to gain him a breeding match with a high-ranking female as a place in the STG but he preferred it to trying to avoid mass effect rounds. The data he had dug up on their effect on Salarian bodies made him wish to stay far away from any potential conflict. Also, as a data-miner no-one minded if he kept a channel in the background open to the current popular music of the other races and if anyone mentioned it he just said it helped him get into their mindsets.

-???-

The information provided by Admiral Blackbair had been a god sent. Despite delaying their departure by several days as they hot-swapped as many of the Trojan's main guns as they could. The 32nd Combat fleet would be arriving in six days and they now knew what they were facing.

Ground side reinforcements would take another week to arrive as none of the other garrison forces whereas near as the fleet and they would have to be carefully organized to ensure that no planet was left under defended in the face of this new unknown aggressor.

-Codex Entry-

-Death Letters: An ancient Turian tradition, Death Letter are letters written before highly dangerous missions to be delivered on confirmation of the writer's death. Normally this is to family or loved ones but can be written to anyone. These letters are delivered with the highest priority and bypass nearly all forms of screening.

-Human Combat Fleet's Reaction speed: During the First contact war the Council was surprised at the speed at which Humanity was able to get a full fleet to the system in response to the initial attack. This was due to two factors.

First, humanity maintained an abnormal number of warships in active service either garrisoning checkpoints in the relay network, practicing fleet maneuvers or providing security for colonization efforts.

The second factor was the level of autonomy granted to each fleet. Where the Turian fleets had to wait for orders from high command before acting on new information from outside their designated area of operations the human fleets were allowed to use their own judgement as long as they did not run counter to standing orders or jeopardize the safety of humanity or its colonies.
