[ ] Astronomer Wu

If what Cao Chun said is true, we can get the most info out of Wu's parasite. The other parasites are to be destroyed regardless, so it should be fine either way, methinks.

Analysis time:
Just to preface: Yrs confirmed that there is a 'correct answer' in that he has already decided which one is the host.

Another thing: the ideal scenario is that this is a stealth mission: ideally the people we investigate never learn that we did. But especially for us and Zheng this might or might not need to work perfectly

So with that said, lets look at the candidates:

[ ] Bai Xia Anxi

do we have any foreshadowing that he might be 'it' so far? I don't think we do. Afterall, he didnt really come up at all basically
Are we the only one that can smooth this out, if we get caught? Probably yes. The Bai delegation (Meizhen) would be obligated to be hissy at the other two dudes, and she is probably more reasonable towards us.

So basically, I think this option would not have us find the parasite, and we would only take it for damage control, if we get caught

[ ] Xia Lin

do we have any foreshadowing that she might be 'it' so far? Actually yes! She had to break up that one brawl earlier that everyone assumed was just because of miscommunication, and we made that White Sky soldier apologize afterward. If this was not an accident, it might have been the incident where the parasite got transferred to her.

Are we needed for (political) damage control? This gets a clear 'it depends'. She herself seems very reasonable to me, so she might not actually be that offended, but as a fellow CRX retainer, she probably knows what our plans and ideas are for the summit. And the other two searching in her mind isnt super great for keeping confidental info secret.

So in summary: there is imo a reasonable chance that she has the parasite. There is less need for damage control compared to XIa Anxi, but there are still some concerns regarding our own secrets.

[ ] Astronomer Wu

do we have any foreshadowing that he might be 'it' so far? Absolutely. He has been seen hanging out with the Meng representatives enough that it is fair to assume that he had by far the most direct contact to Meng Senior or whoever else the Meng contact in their delegation is. Do we need to do damage control? Probably not? He doesnt have a clan that throws a hissy fit at every chance nor does he know our own secrets, so from that PoV he shouldnt be much of an issue.

So basically, he is the most suspect of having the parasite, but there is no drama to this guy.

Now it comes down to what we think is more important: Us having a higher chance of catching the parasite? Us preventing political drama? Or do we go for the middle-ground that gives us a little bit of both?

I think they're likely all infected, it's just a matter of which one matters the most to our Meng antagonist's "grand master plan" that totally wont see them cleansed by TRUTH and REVOLUTION

"Hm, we are limited then," Cao Chun said. "I have three likely hosts. The Astronomer from the Capital, the White Plume Sergeant Xia Lin, and the Bai retainer, Xia Anxi. Infrastructure, Military, and Diplomatic vectors."

"Astronomer Wu is a realm above me, I am not certain I could," Ling Qi said warily.

"I have procured a talisman which will make up the difference, for a time, if your ability is a manner of liminal stealth," Cao Chun replied immediately. "But if you are not confident… take another target. I have observed that these parasite constructs hold varying levels of information, one invested in more important sabotage may be more useful. I will give you the choice of targets."

"And the others?"

"Now that I've gotten a look, I think I might be able to do something, can't snatch it like you, but I could glean something if I know what I'm looking at, as I dig it out," Zheng Fu said.

"And I will simply eliminate the last parasite," Cao Chun said. "Which target, Baroness?"
Probably important to keep note on what Zheng Fu and Cao Chun will do on their targets.

Cao Chun will just straight up kill the parasite. No Info obtained
Zheng Fu is more info-gathering, hence the host will be the most in danger regardless of success. Information is still important of course, and can be counteracted.
Ling Qi can snatch the parasite out of the host, and use it as evidence. Accomplishing both tasks of above.

I have no doubt we're getting rolls from all three of them, so uh, choose which one we'd want?

I prefer Astronomer Wu if only because I don't want to be messing about the head of one of Meizhen's retainers or a fellow retainer of Renxiang.

Then again, we certainly don't want outside powers messing about the head of one of Renxiang's followers either.

Shucks. I don't know which to pick.

[ ] Xia Lin

I think this one. I'm gonna be honest, I just care more about Xia Lin than the other two and trust Ling Qi not to damage her. I don't think the others super risk damaging their targets either...but better safe than sorry.

Tbh, I think I'm leaning Xia Lin too?

If all 3 are infected and 1 person has a chance to get seriously hurt, then i kinda dont want it to be our 'lets loot some corpse immortals' friend.

Although i still think the astronomer is probably the 'correct' choice?

Okay so I just had a nasty thought. From the behavior of our opponent it's clear that they really really don't like us and that they have an inclination towards being spiteful. It also wasn't immediately clear how they would use Bai Xia Anxi to cause an incident.

Now what could Anxi do that would hurt Qi the most? Going after Meizhen. For a Sovereign specialized in information warfare peering closely at us it probably isn't exactly a secret that we're close friends with Bai Meizhen, it would almost certainly cause a diplomatical incident due to the involvement of a white caste Bai, Meizhen has no reason to suspect such a thing to happen coming from Anxi so it even has a small chance of working, and it's just a really spiteful thing to do in general to mess with us in particular.

Okay, let's look at the three sections available here: Military, Infrastructure, and Diplomacy. All of them are infected with parasites in need of serious destruction. All of them will give us SOME info, but only one will give us the most information. Zheng Fu can get some info, but not completely capture the parasite like us. Cao Chun will completely destroy the parasite and any connected info.

Our main suspects are Meng reactionaries.

These three have plants from before we discovered Still Waters Deepening. Looking at their previous targets, the workers we've saved, and the enforcers Cao Chun stopped during negotiations, the main targets for the saboteurs are the infrastructure and security. Therefore, Astronomer Wu and Xia Lin are the most suspicious members and the most likely people to have good information or plans.

However, I think thoroughly reviewing all the possible choices is best.

ASTRONOMER WU
Astronomer Wu represents Infrastructure. As a Cyan, he can do the most damage in a fight if mind-controlled, but may have the most resistance (as far as resistance from a Sovereign's works go). He has significant information about the observatory, an important bargaining chip for us during the latter sections, probably the cultural section. The lenses for the observatory are expensive, using White-tier materials (ashes from one of Xiagmen's leaves, IIRC) and are extremely easy to mess up.

Knowing it's a bargaining chip for the Reformist section if the Meng, the ones supporting us, sabotage through Wu can also decrease their strength, something the reactionary groups of the Meng want.

Information from him would give us information on possible infrastructure targets or perhaps Still Waters' knowledge of key bargaining chips. It can also narrow down the specific Meng faction since I doubt all Meng reactionaries would be okay with sabotaging the clans' interests as a whole.

I can also see Astronomer Wu's Mind Palace synergise well with Fat Lake since his Way is specifically about looking deeply into an imperturbable surface and finding information hidden behind or beyond it. So, something about how things don't fully vanish into the depths of Lake Hei?

NB: I just realised that the White Sky seeing a Cyan+ sabotage things/get aggressive would also be pretty bad for us, since they're mostly Greens.

XIA LIN
Xia Lin represents the Military. She has significant knowledge of our plans and agendas as one of Renxiang's retainers. She's also our main liaison for the White Plumes, and she's the one who usually catches incidents when we can't. Sabotage from her can include our close plans and other incidents. She's also in Renxiang's main circle, so anything involving her would reflect very badly on us.

Granted, she has some form of protection in Cai gear and in Xia Ren. I doubt Xia Ren won't be able to sense or minimise sabotage her troops since she was a general during the Hui's time. So, I feel like there's limited damage she can do before Xia Ren stops her. But, well, I feel like anything targeting our security force will raise Xia Ren's shackles and mess up our favour with them.

In terms of the information we can gain on the saboteurs, I think we can gain information on their more hidden plans since they tried to hide their attack on the enforcers from Cao Chun.

I assume it'll work similarly for Xia Ren. In terms of cultivation scenes, I'm not sure. Xia Lin has been described as a blade of wind pushing the horizon further back, IIRC.

BAI XIA ANXI
Xia Anxi represents Diplomacy. So far, it doesn't seem like the saboteurs have targeted any diplomats so far. However, based on discussions on the discord with Yrs, it turns out that we would have an additional person to clear if we didn't share information with the White Sky. Seeing as how all the people we have to clear are Named/previously known and how all the White Sky people we know so far are in some way diplomats, diplomats may still be on the table.

Now, Xia Anxi is mainly a diplomat for the Bai. Since we voted for duals to have closed-door discussions, their fights or sabotage won't look bad on us and target our favour if it happens during their diplomacy during recess. However, if it happens outside of that, it can reflect badly on the Empire and thus us. The White Sky already kind sees the Empire as disorganised, and Liling didn't really help us in that regard.

Furthermore, any incident with the Bai can help Liling with whatever she's plotting since she is plotting something. However, apart from making the Empire look bad and potentially causing a scandal, I can't see anything sabotage.

However, the Meng have beef with the Bai, so this might be why they're targeting him. It can mess up the Bai's involvement in the summit, keeping them out of this opportunity. I think the information we can get from the parasite will give the least information since a lot of the Meng dislike/hate the Bai.

In terms of cultivation scenes, though, Anxi's mind palace is probably the best for the summit, as he's a Bai who's experienced Lake Hei and loves fishing there (based on what little we know about him). He's also an astronomer and defends himself by distancing himself from things seen as bad. It works really well for Fat Lake.

Looking at all three, I think Astronomer Wu is the best in terms of information on the saboteur and the potential to mess up future negotiations, which is something we would want since Lign Qi is the only one who can fully preserve the parasites for analysis. The field he represents is also something that the saboteurs have frequently targeted in the past, so the likelihood that the information he gives is important is high.

Plus, it'll be fun if people think we can enter the minds of Cyans with no issue. We could get a +1 to Dreamwalkder!!

However, Anxi is probably the best for cultivation scenes.

I'm initially leaning on Astronomer Wu, since I feel like it would be the one which might give us the most info. But the points for the other picks make that pick less of a certainty.

On further meditation.

"All" of these attacks are being sorted out, the question is whether we're in a place to stop anything from emerging, and if our target is programmed with Useful Information.

Astronomer Wu--as was brought up in his side-story--is prepared for the possibility of mental corruption from the Aurora, and has prepared mental defenses. While that's not proof against a Sovereign, breaking through that is going to be neither quick nor subtle, and as has been mentioned, the problem is Being Solved one way or the other.

Xia Lin is a White Plume, but she's also part of Cai Renxiang's retinue and her making a Stupid Mistake is likely to set off Xia Ren in turn. It's a bad look for us, and if something goes wrong now, it's most likely to cause the most harm there. She's also a soft enough target that it's unlikely even White Plume quality gear is going to keep a Sovereign's construct out forever, especially if it's purely operating in a passive state.

Bai Xia Anxi is... Well, he's connected to Bai Meizhen, but they're secondary players in this whole affair, and their part hasn't begun yet. Since all of these problems are being sorted out Now, the question then is "Is he in a position to do a lot of damage before it gets Sorted Out, and if it's a Long Con waiting for the next phase, is his parasite even going to know what it is yet?"

Which, you know, is a big 'Maybe' but the other side of it is that Xia Anxi likely hasn't had close contact with other Infected people to be a vector--and if he was a target, then Meizhen would have been an even better target if they wanted to cause a Massive Disruption. Instead, it's him. Which might suggest they're trying to get to Meizhen, but that's going to be stopped in this event regardless.

So yeah, given that "All of these problems are being Resolved Today, who is most likely to be able to cause Problems right now if provoked" only gives one answer.

[X] Xia Lin.

... Wait, on further thought.

What is Bai Xia Anxi even doing here @yrsillar ? Who's he had contact with in the course of his duties?

Because this thing seems to spread through close proximity to people who were earlier infected, which is how they're getting at people. But Xia Anxi is Meizhen's aide right now, right? What's he doing that would have brought him in contact with the low level people for it to jump over to him? Xia Lin makes sense, she's part of the security detail and broke up at least one Parasite derived incident, and Astronomer Wu was here almost from day one overseeing the construction, but Xia Anxi? How did he get infected?

I think it's in our interests to clear the Meng elder here if we can, and the astronomer is the most likely to have that information.

I'm also a bit tickled by the idea of the Xai and the Zheng working together.

[X] Xia Lin
[X] Bai Xia Anxi

I like the idea of using this to build our Bond with Xia Lin and maybe gain some brownie points with the Heron General if we play our cards right. Alectai's argument convinced me that Xia Anxi is a logical choice as well.

He has mostly been around Meizhen, basically being her secretary, you talk to him to talk to her.

Xiao Fen thinks this should be her job. Meizhen disagrees.

...

Yeah, it's Xia Anxi.

The Parasite is actively seeking him out, Xia Lin and Astronomer Wu are targets of opportunity, who had direct contact with Infection Vectors. Xia Anxi is a second or third step away from the Infection Vectors, and more importantly, it stopped at him, despite having Bai Meizhen as a logical next step forward for Maximum Impact and Hurt. It's playing a game here, and Bai Xia Anxi is where it stopped despite having a more impactful target in reach from there, which suggests that the Parasite in there has a more complex playload simply because it's picky about who it jumps to.

Remember, we've seen that Bai Xia Anxi is prickly and picky about people following proper procedure. Laborers and workers don't talk to him, they talk to his people, and if their report is important, he passes that up the chain. He should have had no direct exposure, but he got infected anyway, and his parasite stopped there instead of moving up the chain to someone with one of the highest Ling Qi bond scores out there (And we know the Parasites definitely seem to lock on to Ling Qi's image somehow and Do Something With it) Which suggests to me that there's actual intelligence going on there.

Astronomer Wu is in charge of a significant portion of imperial infrastructure, and his parasite is likely more complex due to his higher cultivation. He represents a greater insight into the saboteur's plot.
