Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
What about a reverse scry? Something like: "Beam information to someone we marked ahead of time at Distant range. You have no particular way to receive a response"
I can agree on this being pretty useful, as I am familiar with how Sending is a phenomenal spell in D&D for a reason. A two-way channel based on SL if possible would be better just due to a consistent connection.

I do want to double check, do we need a social screening art/Anti-scry or did we pick one up already?

Midsummer's Duet: C
Duration: Long
This piece, embodying sincere intent to communicate, speaks to the musician's ability engage with hopes, fears and aspirations of listener without words. Even the tenuous understanding thrums with new vitality, bridging cap left by lack of shared language. User and affected target find themselves able to express their intents and meanings through spiritual bond in a way reminiscent of singing names of spirits. This communication is not perfect nor detailed, but rather expresses attitudes from which details could be inferred given time and insight.

This technique allows one to communicate without shared language and gives large bonus to Social Perception and Speech (and derived skills) for both user and willing target towards each other.

Alright, here's all the techs so far.

so many translation techs :V

Four Winds Convergence: C
Short

The Winds travel between all lands, picking up sounds and secrets from across the world, one who has learned to listen to their song can gain valuable insights on their rivals. Requires Spring Breeze Canto to be active, and temporarily provides a large bonus to Combat Perception and Physical Avoid. If this bonus should result in an incoming attack moving up a grade of Awareness, provides a large bonus to the next attack or effect applied to the one so discovered

Summer's Cheerful Laughter: C
Duration: Long

If a musician listens closely, they can hear the summer winds' cheerful laughter as they play with that which interests them. And there are many, many things which can entertain the young fickle spirits of the summer wind.

Can only be active when Spring Breeze Canto is active. For the duration of the technique, the musician can cast their sense of hearing up to Very Far distance to better perceive that which is around them. Doing so grants one a bonus to Combat Perception and Social Perception.

Winter's Last Breath: C
Immediate
The end of Winter blends into the beginning of spring, the frost on the winds merge with the warmer Spring breeze. Add the power of the last Winter wind to your Spring Breeze Canto to spread the wind outward. May only be played while Spring Breeze Canto is active. With its last breath, the Winter wind spreads your perception outward, up to Very Far range while sharing it with your allies. In that short moment, you and your allies may sense your entire surroundings with Winter's cold, discerning sight.

Four Winds Messengers: C
Duration: Short
The wind knows itself even when blowing at cross-purposes, and so the herald of one of the great winds might recognize the task of an opposing peer. The user observes a target within Close range and attempts to determine roughly the direction and distance of others the target is acting as a scout or messenger for. Attempt is contested by Poise and Stealth. Information gained is limited to the target's understanding. The target must be observed without interruption for the full duration of the technique.

Additionally, the user may detect the presence of active communication effects affecting the target, unless obscured by an effect of greater potency.
Comms
Hidden Wind's Breath: C
Duration: Long
The wind connects all beneath the sky, mastery of wind and music allows the singer to weave a connection between two souls into the tapestry that may go unnoticed by all save their target.

Upon use, the user establishes a connection with an ally within Very Far range across which senses and thoughts may be shared, familiarity with the target increases the clarity of communication. While a connection is active, either side may use the other's combat perception <at a half-rank penalty> if it is higher than their own.

The connection requires perception rank equal to the user's stealth to identify it's presence, and a rank above to identify the user and target's locations. Duration may be refreshed instantly at D cost upon the effect's end. Up to 3 channels may be active at the same time.

(Alternative) Hidden Wind's Breath: C
Duration: Long
The wind connects all beneath the sky, mastery of wind and music allows the singer to weave a connection between two souls into the tapestry that may go unnoticed by all save their target.

Upon use, the user establishes a connection with an ally within Very Far range across which senses and thoughts may be shared, familiarity with the target increases the clarity of communication. Once the connection is established, it may be maintained over greater distances dependent on how close the two are - up to 500m + 500m*SL.

Day of Celebration: C
Short

Heads of golden grain sway with music carried by fall breezes. A call has gone out. The time for festivals has arrived once more. Can only be active when Spring Breeze Canto is active. For the duration that Day of Celebration is active allies touched by Spring Breeze Canto may also silently share short messages and images with each other instead of just the user of the art. With festival music swelling allies under its affects find increased energy in their steps giving them an additional small boost to physical avoid.
Translation
Spring Breeze's Whisper: C
Duration: Long
Requires Spring Breeze Canto to be active.
Mastery of the melody helps carry both words and meaning through the wind. The musician and willing listeners can understand each others words within Spring Breeze's Canto's Range regardless of language. This translation effect is not perfect. In addition the musician gets a small bonus to Speech.

Common-Breath Zephyr
Duration: Scene
Words can be easily carried upon the breeze, but the skilled practitioner may carry understanding as well, trusting in the wind which knows no boundaries of land or tongue. Within a peaceful social context, the user may activate this technique to accurately interpret statements made in another language, either a few simple sentences at a time or one more complex one, or to likewise communicate understanding of their own words to another person or group.

South Wind Blows Unerringly: C
Duration: Long
Just as crisp southern winds bring clarity and clear skies, this technique allows the user and any number of willing participants to communicate clearly through concepts, impressions and intent, bypassing the need for words and language.* Any participants attempting to lie or deceive whilst communicating in this manner suffer a full rank penalty to their Speech, as the winds of intent and concept blow crossways.

*Creator's note: This technique does not eliminate confusion due to usage of cultural metaphors and associated concepts, or loss of nuance or subtlety. The creator of the technique bears no responsibility for mishaps incurred through usage of the technique. Use at your own discretion.

Stolen Breath Comprehension: C
Long
There is much more to speech than just the spoken syllables. Intonation, context, body language, and much more contributes to what a person means when they speak. This technique bypasses the need for words entirely with a single willing person, smothering meaningless sounds with a soft melody instead conveying the raw intent hidden behind them. Communication through this technique requires no shared language, but is unmistakably more limited than normal dialogue.

The Song within the Words: C
Duration: Long
A musician can perceive and understand the world through sound. Their understanding of expression and sound is very versatile. Be it the wind through the trees, a spirit beast's moan or a stranger's sigh, there is expression and meaning hidden within the sound. Using this art, a music cultivator may see the meaning of words and sounds carried on the wind. Emotion and intention can be revealed in intonation, not only language. The user may surpass communication barriers to understand the basic meaning of another's words. For words and speech are also an art form and the music of language is universal. Gives large bonus to Perception.

Distant Wind's Convergence: C
Duration: Long
All winds eventually converge, just as surely as they will part. No matter how distantly they have traveled, or how long they have been apart, the winds readily unite like old friends. The user learns to channel their intentions into a message writ upon the wind, inviting another to do the same in the hope that understanding may be achieved. The user selects one target within range of Spring's Breeze Canto, and sends forth a wind laden with notes bearing a message of invitation and understanding. Upon receiving the message, the target may choose to reciprocate, generating a two-way channel of wind that both the user and the target may freely communicate across so long as the target remains in range. This effect bypasses the limits of language, and instead sends forth pure intention and expression. This does not allow for the full range of communication that language offers, but does convey both the intent and the tone of the sender to the recipient. However, attempting to lie or deceive over this channel results in a penalty to Speech or the relevant skill, as the sender's message becomes muddled in the wind due to conflicting intents.

Warning Wind: C
Duration: Immediate
What use is knowing something that could help an ally if you cannot communicate it to them? The user may activate this art when an ally fails a combat perception test. A small breeze brings their ally's attention to the relevant area, allowing them to retry the test with a +30 bonus.

(Revised) Winds of Winter Yearning: C
Duration: Long
This piece is not played aloud for mortal ears, carried on the flows of the users qi, this solemn melody is the music of the winter blizzard, entered but never left, and a song of exclusion to those outside. While active, no sound made within the Range of the User's Music techniques may exit that Range and a technique of B rank or higher is required to communicate outside. Enemies outside have significantly reduced Combat Perception against anything within.

Was under the impression this comes already built in to Canto, the drawback being that it's a single channel shared by everyone covered by the effect.
I can see how that might be an intention. But to me the art makes it sound like Canto create many separate channels between us and allies. To me it doesn't parse in a way that makes so that allies can share a channel with each other. It might be that Canto creates one big shared channel where everyone can communicate with everyone, but I don't think it hurts to have an option of ally to ally talk that yrs can pick from.

Yrs already confirmed that allies can talk to each other using canto

@Neshuakadal I also want to add that Xephiria chewed me out a lot over not being ambitious enough with my proposals (on the discord) saying my tech that allows complete communication at Close distance was basically an E rank tech. Yours would under that logic fall under, like, G rank :V

(Just to be clear, I don't want to insult, I just want to have a little fun and vent my frustration from that) :Ü™

I would disagree with this assessment. My misunderstanding when I built the tech from was that Canto created many comms between allies and Ling Qi. If that was true than my tech was basically duplicating a C rank tech X times where X could equal anything. That was why I was so conservative with it. It just doesn't make sense to me to have a tech cost less than it's parent tech when its mass copying that tech.

Spring Breeze Canto: C
Duration: Upkeep 5
The melody whispers softly on the breeze, carrying the users perception out into her surroundings, questing for friends and aquantainces to recognize and enemies and dangers to identify. The user gains a general awareness of the surroundings and can perceive the locations and state of her friends and allies within range and also gain an awareness of her enemies' states. Extends up to Ver Far range and grants a bonus to (major) Combat Perception and (minor) Physical Avoid.

Humming of the Reawakening: C
Duration: Long
Requires Spring Breeze Canto to be active.
A soft humming suffuses the Canto carrying with it the thoughts of the user and her allies. The soft hum covertly carries consciously transmitted sentences and impressions with increasing length/complexity and clarity with decreasing distance. Allies within Very Far distance can only transmit clipped statements, while allies within Close distance can send complete sentences and increasing in clarity to whole paragraphs at Near distance. When the technique ends it can be reactivated as a free action.

New Life's Buzz: C
Duration: Short
Requires Spring Breeze Canto and Humming of the Reawakening to be active.
The soft hum intensifies into the loud buzzing of the heights of spring where new life joins the old in harmony and conflict. The user and up to three targeted individuals gain a (major) bonus to Social Perception in regards to each other.
And the response:

Super gimped
It does basically nothing, and does it badly
It looks like an E rank tech
That a yellow might use

With respect to Xephiria, I think he was being a little too harsh on your techs. I do think they are overcosted, or underpowered, for the effects offered, but I would still love to discuss that. I love the art system in this story and I love discussing arts. What inspired you to go with those effects? While the debate can go on and on about what effects are worth, I think it is valuable to discuss and build a better shared understanding of what we should look for in arts we might get, make, or mod in the future.

My tech is a broken piece of garbage, but I am still very happy about the process I used to make it. Sure its foundation is a misunderstanding of how the new Canto works, but I feel I can defend the choices I made in making it. If I have the energy, and the votes not closed, I will likely revisit it in the morning and try to make something more appropriate. Just because the arts we made aren't attractive now, doesn't mean they can't be attractive with some more work.

I have already made a tech but I felt like we could combine Bond based comms and translation pretty easily. Translation is something we can do with a Tool, not even a slotted Talisman, and such a narrow concept as communicating at distances without the versatility, distance and lack of Bond of RME's pool is meh even for a topped off C tech. I got inspired by the alternative Hidden Wind's Breath but felt like buffing Perception is the wrong way to go about it. It should be a combat communications tech, something that lets us communicate easily and with accuracy but not necessarily perceive through the others senses. Something that lets us separate from our allies across multiple fronts while still fighting like a unit, which I didn't get the feel of in the Caldera fight where we didn't coordinate with CRX when separated. And then we can just tack on a "translation" bit on it as well because we're pretty decent at it already. Something like this:

Sympathetic Winds Communion: C
Duration: Long or Persistent
The winds carry meaning across distances so that understanding can be had in peace and even the most distant of friends may share each others company. The user forms a connection with a target within Far Range. The user and target can communicate meaning, concepts and thoughts unhindered by differences in perspective. Both the user and target gain a bonus to Empathy, Spirit Ken and Beast Handling derived as well as Social Perception when trying to understand the other. If the creature is an ally they form an invisible bond, the duration becomes Persistent and the Range increases by up to three kilometres at Bond 6.

I'd bump that range up to Very Far.

Far just isn't that... far. It's 200m, and it's more or less the range we engage things at. Having a perception technique that only reaches that distance is kind of silly.
I agree, I had it at Far because I thought that was the maximum range we could create techs at. After rereading the rules, it seems I was mistaken. As such, I've bumped the tech up to Very Far.

Mmm, that was my immediate thought too. The more I think about it though, the more I come around to BN's argument that it isn't an immediate priority. It comes back to the short term vs long term issues. In the immediate term we have RME for perception, Canto still provides an awareness boost, and we have our new talisman for anti-ninja. HDW being super strong perception isn't really needed. Longer term, if we move to merge hdw and rme in a successor then something like that wold absolutely be wanted - but should be easy enough to do then.
I disagree, I think that a tech for general perception in an area around us is going to be useful, especially if we need our RME wisps to focus on a specific target. I've always found that I like RME for focusing in on one specific thing and HDW to get a general breadth of perception around us, and I would like to continue that trend.

I think this bursts beyond the boundaries of what HDW can do (keywords). Also, this seems fairly weak. Only Far range, stealth is conditional, only one jump at Bond 6 (which is not useful at all due to Bond 6 rareness). Also, even very basic translation will get an "this isn't perfect" effect slapped on top of it at our level so your translation effect isn't doable :Ü™

Yrs has said it can have translation so this definitely is within the realm of HDW's keywords since it has all of them. The bond effect was meant as incremental, Far Range is for the translation effect, increasing to Distant at Bond 1 by the 500m*Bond of the alternative Hidden Wind's Breath Erebeal posted. Maybe we interpreted HDW's "Bolsters the armor, health and Resist of listeners, up to a full rank at Bond 6." differently but this was mostly a concept for combining suggestions. It isn't supposed to be "strong" but utility for scout comms, cross battle comms and dealing with alien spirits, all in one tech where others are putting weak Combat Perception bonuses to make these utilities into separate techs. Slap on a "this isn't perfect", toy with the distances and social bonuses, change the wording! It's the concept of not wasting two C rank techs on a translation effect and long range comm when we could do them in one versatile tech and do something cool with the other.

I mean the Spirit Ken and Beast Handling with the bursting.
For reference, these are the keywords:
- Communication, Connections, Wind, Music, Yang.
- Empathy, Perceptiveness, Manipulation, Music.

And you didn't state the rate of progression for the Bond effect.
Also, what "cool thing" do you want to do with the 3rd tech? Our idea for this was "1 perception, 1 comm, and 1 other(probably translation)" as the tech spread. Then Yrs came along and said "you get perception and weak comms in just SBC!" which meant we suddenly had two techs to play with, so we could make a strong comms tech and a translation tech. What else do you want? I guess we could get an improved perception tech instead :Ü™

Lets say Range progression is Far + 500*Bond metres. I've already suggested a tech so I don't think this one even gets counted, on top of the dozen translation techs we already have. As far as I'm aware Spirit Ken and Beast Handling are Manipulation skills and could also fall under the combined Communication, Connection, Music as long as it's a minor bonus. If a translation tech is possible without Speech then I think it's all right.

I think if we can get what we want in SBC and one other tech, we should take something like winter winds yearning(its not my tech, but it is an example for another good tech)

(Revised) Winds of Winter Yearning: C
Duration: Long
This piece is not played aloud for mortal ears, carried on the flows of the users qi, this solemn melody is the music of the winter blizzard, entered but never left, and a song of exclusion to those outside.

Basically I think this covers or at least partially covers what we want for perception. For that moment, MC and allies have a flash of awareness of everything up to Very Far. This would reveal anyone with at least the Dancers' level of stealth who is sneaking around. Idk what is considered a huge boost in perception...maybe +30 or something? Anyway its not super OP perception bc its duration is Immediate.
Winter's Last Breath (edited version): C
Short
Requires Spring Breeze Canto to be active.

Were going to the Wall where they've set up a rendezvous pretty much right next to the Sect, Eternal Winter is beyond the cloud barb's territory which is a LONG way away.

I've spent the last two hours on Discord polishing up dycouza's second tech idea with him and Lena and this is the final version:
Article:
Kindred Winds' Communion: C
Duration: Long to Persistent
The winds carry meaning across vast distances, so that understanding can be had in peace and even the most distant of friends may share each other's company. The user forms a connection with a willing target within Far range or an ally within Very Far range. The user and target can communicate meaning, concepts and thoughts with accuracy proportional to the understanding of the other party with each other. This effect expresses itself as an increase in Social Perception and Manipulation derived Skills. If the target is an ally, this effect becomes hidden from outside observers, increases in duration and range in proportion to the strength of the Bond between the user and ally. The duration increasing to Scene length at Bond 3 and Persistent at Bond 5, while the range increases in increments of X00m up to a total of Ykm at Bond 6.

Hope this is a good technique since I'm using up my proposal slot for it :Ü™

You may vote for as many techniques as you like and the top two that are from two different categories will be the techniques selected.

Perception

[] Four Winds Convergence: C

If a musician listens closely, they can hear the summer winds' cheerful laughter as they play with that which interests them. And there are many, many things which can entertain the young fickle spirits of the summer wind.

Can only be active when Spring Breeze Canto is active. For the duration of the technique, the musician can cast their sense of hearing up to Very Far distance to better perceive that which is around them. Doing so grants one a bonus to Combat Perception and Social Perception.

[] Winter's Last Breath (revised): C

Bonus to combat perception while the technique is active. Any enemy using stealth within range will be revealed unless they have Stealth potency that is one rank higher than Ling Qi's Stealth rank. May be reactivated for D rank qi.

[] Four Winds Messengers: C
Duration: Short
The wind knows itself even when blowing at cross-purposes, and so the herald of one of the great winds might recognize the task of an opposing peer. The user observes a target within Close range and attempts to determine roughly the direction and distance of others the target is acting as a scout or messenger for. Attempt is contested by Poise and Stealth. Information gained is limited to the target's understanding. The target must be observed without interruption for the full duration of the technique.

Additionally, the user may detect the presence of active communication effects affecting the target, unless obscured by an effect of greater potency.

[]Hidden Wind's Breath: C

The duration increasing to Scene length at Bond 3 and Persistent at Bond 5, while the range increases in increments of 100m up to a total of 1km at Bond 6.

Translation
[]Spring Breeze's Whisper: C
Duration: Long
Requires Spring Breeze Canto to be active.
Mastery of the melody helps carry both words and meaning through the wind. The musician and willing listeners can understand each others words within Spring Breeze's Canto's Range regardless of language. This translation effect is not perfect. In addition the musician gets a small bonus to Speech.

[]Common-Breath Zephyr
Duration: Scene
Words can be easily carried upon the breeze, but the skilled practitioner may carry understanding as well, trusting in the wind which knows no boundaries of land or tongue. Within a peaceful social context, the user may activate this technique to accurately interpret statements made in another language, either a few simple sentences at a time or one more complex one, or to likewise communicate understanding of their own words to another person or group.

[]South Wind Blows Unerringly: C

[]Stolen Breath Comprehension: C
Long
There is much more to speech than just the spoken syllables.

[]Distant Wind's Convergence: C

[]Midsummer's Duet: C

Buff/Debuff
[]Warning Wind: C
Duration: Immediate
What use is knowing something that could help an ally if you cannot communicate it to them? The user may activate this art when an ally fails a combat perception test. A small breeze brings their ally's attention to the relevant area, allowing them to retry the test with a +30 bonus.

[](Revised) Winds of Winter Yearning: C
Duration: Long
This piece is not played aloud for mortal ears, carried on the flows of the users qi, this solemn melody is the music of the winter blizzard, entered but never left, and a song of exclusion to those outside. While active, no sound made within the Range of the User's Music techniques may exit that Range and a technique of B rank or higher is required to communicate outside. Enemies outside have significantly reduced Combat Perception against anything within.
