What's this?

Kimi Shi Ni Tamau Koto Nakare (Thou Shall Not Die) is a seinen manga written by Yoko Taro and illustrated by Daisuke Moriyama.

The synopsis is this: in a not too distant future, supernatural powers have been brought into reality, and the world is growing less and less peaceful by the day. Japan wishes to have a hand in events caused by such tensions, but its limited by its own Consitution - hence, its government exploits a loophole by searching for 'gifted' students in its borders, training them in a specialised school and covertly sending them to warzones with their school uniforms, some katanas and literally nothing else.

Wait, who's this Yoko guy you put in the title?

To cut a long story short, he is the equilvalent of Anno and Urobuchi in the JRPG gaming scene; most famous for the Drakengard/NieR franchise (in which its latest installment, NieR: Automata comes out in two months). While he has never recieved the levels of attention as the former two, he has gained a cult following in Japan (where Square Enix executives keep making the mistake of giving him money for games over and over) and worldwide.

So...PMMM and Evangelion levels of mindfuckery?

Sadly, only in Drakengard, actually. His stuff outside of that is more brutal than bizarre - think Berserk, Hellsing or Jormundgandr for this manga.

Sounds like Akame ga Kill levels of edge...

Heh, no. Unlike the people who wrote that drek, this manga has actually good writing. An interesting plot, bizarre yet sympathetic characters, and managing to deconstruct tropes endlessly without falling into the usual traps.

Do expect deaths though; children dying is common thing in Yoko's stuff.

What's with the Raildex comparison then?

Well, this manga is pretty much Raildex's synopsis without the quirky magic BS and given the deconstruction treatment, yeah.

Where can I read this?

Check your usual manga hosting sites; otherwise, you can read it on Fire Sanctuary's image host (Credit to Rekka Alexiel for the translation; on another note, do check out her blog for updates and additional stuff on this series) directly.
