The Topaz Championship (Legend of the Five Rings)

Location
London, England

The Topaz Championship

The year is 1138 by the Isawa Calendar. Ten years ago, the Glorious Emperor Toturi ascended to the Emerald Throne after the chaos and destruction of the Second Day of Thunder. For ten years he has lead Rokugan in peace and prosperity, commanding his loyal samurai to rebuild their shattered strength and heal the wounds inflicted by the ruinous conflict of the Clan Wars. Today, Rokugan is stronger than it ever was, and with the birth of the Emperor's first child the people look forwards to a long and prosperous future.

It is in looking to the future that the people of Rokugan turn their eyes to their new generation - their sons and daughters who can remember nothing of the chaos and strife that so cursed their parents, who now step forwards to take their oaths and samurai and write their names into the history books.

In the village of Tsuma, located within the prosperous lands of the Crane, the most prestigious Gempukku ceremony in the Empire is about to begin. Only the very best of the new generation are sent to the Topaz Championship, for here they will have the chance to demonstrate their worth before the eyes of the highest officials in the land - including the Divine Emperor himself. Merely being sent to attend is a tremendous honour, but if you can manage to secure victory and earn the title of Topaz Championship... why, there is almost no limit to what you might be able to achieve.

-/-

The sun is just starting to dip towards the horizon when you arrive in the village of Tsuma. For such a prestigious location the settlement here is surprisingly small - one of the Crane Clan's primary dojos is nearby, as is the flattened hilltop where legend says the Kami first descended from the heavens. Still, perhaps the children of Doji have made the choice to keep this place undeveloped so as to avoid spoiling the natural beauty of the site - and it certainly is beautiful.

You check your invitations carefully, for while you know your Clans will have sent representatives who can vouch for you it would still be utterly disgraceful to arrive at your own Gempukku so disorganized. Fortunately, they are still intact, as are the travel papers permitting you passage on the Emperor's roads long enough to get here. Now, all you have to do is make yourselves known...

The Topaz Championship is an ancient and venerated tradition, and as such your families were all keen to make sure you knew exactly what was expected of you. Traditionally, contestants will proceed to the small square at the centre of the village and announce themselves publicly, stating their name and Clan. There, a scribe of some sort will record the details and you can go about finding the rest of your Clan's representatives... or, perhaps, speaking to your fellow contestants.

@Alectai, @Mina, @horngeek, @A Nation's Virtue and @EtchedSteel, welcome to the game. This initial scene is for you to introduce yourselves in-character and maybe get to know your fellow contestants.

As a personal request, please add a copy of your character sheet in a spoiler at the end of your first post. I'd like to be able to see them all fairly easily, for future reference.

Today had been an exceptionally good day--admittedly, many days have been various degrees of pleasant in since she had learned that she was being sponsored access to the Topaz Championship of all things! The greatest and most prestigious Gempukku of Rokugan! Admittedly, she had been preparing for and expecting the more traditional coming-of-age ceremony of being nudged out into the Shadowlands and expected to kill a dangerous creature from within it, but she would strive not to let her Clan down!

Much of the journey had been spent reviewing the more soft skills expected of a proper Samurai of good lineage. Indeed, her skills of battle were not to be underestimated--as expected of the Hida--but a Samurai of Rokugan was expected to be somewhat more rounded in general, and to be truly the best of her generation, so would Haruko. Unfortunately, many of the small niceities had flown directly over her head, to be recalled only sporadically and with great effort. Fortunately, there was still some time to continue her review! The training manual provided by Seika-sensei surely wouldn't let her down!

Probably.

To her pleasant surprise however, the central square was still sparsely populated from fellow competitors. Was she one of the first few to arrive? The extra time of travel paying off? Either way, she would seize this opportunity immediately!

"I am Hida Haruko of the Crab!" She calls out upon her entrance, as the various scribes and onlookers begin taking notes. "Here to participate in the Topaz Championship!"

Honor: 3.3
Glory: 4.3
Status: 1.0

1) Haruko is a proud member of the Crab clan! With the powerful shell and grasping claws that comes with it... Or she would if she was an actual crab, rather than just a member of the clan that bears their name. Regardless! They serve a critical role in smashing the various creatures in the Shadowlands that try to pour out over the wall and inflict mayhem and misery upon the good peoples of Rokugan, and she is more than proud to stand amongst them!

2) Of the Crab, the Hida clan stands as the mightiest and most certainly heroic of their number, and it is no surprise that Haruko was born amongst them. Sure, some people might have complaints about silly things like being rude, or mean, or impolite, but that's just because we're far too busy cracking carapaces to have to worry about the little fiddly bits and nicities that are needed to pass the time when you're not constantly under siege. It's perfectly fine though, she won't judge them for that, not everyone has the good fortune to have such a noble cause to devote their lives to!

3) Haruko is a Bushi in the making, a heroine of club and steel, joining the ranks of her fellow clansmen in the defense of the Empire from the forces of hell. She's rather determined to do justice to this critical and important responsibility, though it came as somewhat of a surprise that she was seconded to this tournament, she was sure that she was merely average for the longest time. Nonetheless! She had a responsibility to do justice to this thing.

4) Haruko is large, pretty enough, and tends to stand a head above even the average Rokugani man, which is entirely unsurprising given her lineage when you consider it. Friendly, affectionate, and while not exactly a paragon of statecraft and face, her dogged perseverence and clumsy efforts to look on the bright side of life at all times have won her some number of admirers. Even if they're hard pressed to admit it without looking silly themselves.

5) Ambition and the seizing of power and influence have their places, but Haruko's wishes are straightforward enough in this early period of her life. To do her family and Clan proud, and defend the Empire from the monsters still lurking withing the Shadowlands--often by discouraging them by club, why change what's been so effective in the past generations?

6) Hida Seika is Haruko's primary teacher in the arts of hitting things exceedingly hard while bouncing counterattacks off of you. An old crusty veteran of several major battles, including the campaigns leading up to the Second Day of Thunder, the old Bushi has seen just about everything at this point--and frankly would rather not have to put up with keeping a bunch of students in line, but the young Haruko managed to worm her way into the heart of the old veteran. It helps that the girl's talent is enough that she only usually needs to go over a lesson once or twice before it sinks in, which is a good change of pace from the other rookies of her generation.

7) Haruko is an irepressible optimist, difficult to drag down into a funk or knocked off her game by the words and deeds of others. She has her own idea of proper behavior after all, and as long as you make the effort, one can never be wholly wrong! Of course, coming hand in hand with this is her unhesitating dedication to honesty, and her tendency to give the benefit of the doubt to her peers, which has obvious problems when dealing with the viper's nest of politics and the court.

8) Bushido is important. It's the difference between a common thug and a true Samurai of Rokugan, the ability to set aside your weapons and behave as proper, honest sorts. Sadly, far too many seem to consider it to be a set of guidelines than something that should be upheld as a way of life. Haruko in particular particularly favors Compassion--which may seem a little odd coming from a Crab, but she sees no contridiction in it--the Crab are strong and dedicated, and it is through their labors that the other lands of Rokugan can know a semblance of peace and prosperity. It's just a shame they do such a good job mucking up the opportunity.

9) The Crab are a clan of great heroes and champions--the first into battle against the the demons of the Shadowlands--and when all goes well, the only ones who need to make that sacrifice. Haruko is proud to stand among them, though she does wonder why there's all of the bad talk about the other Clans all the time, it all seems a little bit senseless to her.

10) Not yet! There's evidently talks with the Unicorn to continue strengthening their alliances, but nothing formal has been hammered out yet. Her performance in the Topaz Championship may or may not throw a wrench in things.

11) To a certain extent, Haruko does share many of the Crab's basic opinions and prejudices regarding the other major Clans, but as she is still young and unseasoned, she's more likely to be swayed aside from this through the right interactions, rather than be set in her ways like an older and more mature Samurai might.

12) Ultimately, Haruko's most direct loyalty goes to the Daimyo of her family, but that's chiefly because they're the ones who would be calling the shots at this particular moment, and serving as the channel for which the will of the Emperor is made manifest. Sort of, she tries not to think about these things because the interlocking alliances and interests tend to make her head hurt.

13) Haruko likes sweets, especially after a long day's work while relaxing in a bath. It's a simple sort of luxury, but surprisingly rare to come across in her homelands, given the heavy focus on being ready to break heads at a moment's notice, even for the children. Things she doesn't particularly care for are liars and people who fail to follow through on what they said they'd do. Perhaps these aren't the most complicated things, but she is both uncomplicated by nature, and fourteen years old, philosophy can come later!

14) Haruko often finds herself crossing her arms when at rest--a somewhat defensive posture brought on from her hard lessons in awareness and fast reactions while in training. Such is the flaw of being a talented student with an impatient teacher--you tend to be the most frequent sufferer of surprise inspections and lessons.

15) Haruko is very sincere by nature. Though fully capable of keeping her mouth shut if she must, she always finds herself more comfortable in an informal situation, where relaxing and saying what she means is less likely to get her the stink-eye for lack of discipline. Gregarious by nature, she nonetheless finds this to be something to overcome in society.

16) "Define Improper". There's a vast difference between subordinates relaxing their face when in the command tent filled with friends and comrades, and failing to meet up with basic discipline when on duty. The former is something to be easily overlooked so long as they remain effective, but the latter must be reminded that all are expected to do their jobs, and one of the jobs of the Samurai is to be the rocks that the commoners rally behind.

17) "A fine daughter who may yet bring great honor to the clan... Hopefully she doesn't find herself led into trouble during the Championship."

18) Haruko's goals are simple, to crush evil where it stands. Definitions of 'Evil' may require some fine tuning and tempering with worldly experiences, but it is not as though Rokugan lacks villains, even away from the Wall (In many cases, especially away from the Wall).

19) Not particularly religious. She certainly attends the festivals and shows proper reverence as expected, but beyond that, she mostly attempts to live her life honestly and without need for regrets, and hopes that will be enough.

20) Likely without having seen it coming, or realizing it had actually happened until it's too late.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Remember your lessons.

Honor your clan.

These thoughts and more ran through the mind of the Mantis youth as he approached the central square. He had never expected to attend the Topaz Championship or be entrusted with a set of Storm Kama while so young, and yet here he was with both. Indeed, he had fully expected his senpai to be given these honors. Perhaps one of them would have been a better choice...

...no. That was wrong. His lord had been the one to choose him, and his sensei had put forth his own name among his favored students. To doubt himself would be the same as to doubt them. They had chosen him because he was the most suitable one, and now it was up to him to take the title of Topaz Champion! With a renewed sense of purpose, Kenki strode forwards towards the center of the square, where a young Crab had already announced herself.

"I am Yoritomo Kenki, son of the Mantis!" He shouted, a massive grin upon his face as he threw his fist into the air. "And I am here to become the Topaz Champion!"

Fortune favors the mortal man.

Name: Yoritomo Ryuusei
Age: 18
School: Yoritomo Bushi
Honor: 5.7
Status: 2.5
Glory: 3.8
Infamy: 1.0
School Technique:
You suffer no penalties to movement or attacks for rough or uneven terrain. You do not lose Glory or Honor when using improvised weapons, or weapons with the Peasant keyword, in combat. You suffer no penalties for fighting with a Small or Medium weapon in your off-hand if that weapon has the Peasant keyword. Finally, you gain a bonus of +1k0 to all attack rolls.
Your wild, unfettered attacks disorient your opponent and opens holes in his defenses. Every time you hit an opponent in melee, his Armor TN is reduced by 5. This penalty only applies to your attacks, and lasts for 2 Rounds. This Technique is cumulative (a number of times equal to your School Rank), and the duration resets with each application.
Emerald Badge: A badge given to Ryuusei and his comrades that denotes their roles. Acts as a symbol of authority, and grants a +2k0 bonus once a day to one High Skill of Ryuusei's choice.

Storm Kama (Raiho and Tenrai): The Storm Kama given to Ryuusei when he was chosen to go to the Topaz Championship. When wielded together they grant +1k0 to attack rolls and have a DR of 2k2.
Ancestor:
One of the most notorious of Mantis ancestors, Gusai proved the power ofa single individual by successfully carrying a knife into the presence of the Emperor - only to see the Emperor prove the limitations of such power when he signs the order for Guasi's execution. When Gusai guides you, you gain +3k3 to any Stealth or Sleight-of-Hand roll made to conceal a weapon on your person.
Demands: Gusai will abandon you if you ever voluntarily go unarmed into the presence of a rival or enemy.
1. The Mantis Clan. Though still only recently made a Great Clan, the Mantis are unrivaled masters of the seas and will use their strengths to make the other Great Clans give them the respect they deserve.

2. Kenki is proud to lay claim to the name of Yoritomo, the titan who led the Mantis to greatness and Great Clan status. With force of will and determination, nothing is impossible!

3. Kenki has trained to be a bushi so that he can serve in the mighty fleets of the Mantis, just as his hero Yoritomo once did.

4. He laughs easily and smiles often, though he tries to maintain his On more often as is appropriate. Kenki is of roughly average height and keeps his hair cut close to his head, save for his topknot. A long and thick scar across his nose serves as a stark reminder of his early days in his sensei's dojo.

5. Kenki's dream is to become a man as great as Yoritomo himself, of course! The only question of course is how...

6. Himself of course, for if he cannot trust himself who else can? Truth be told, Kenki confides the most in his eldest sister Aozora. Without her assistance, it's doubtful that he would have learned the Way of the Mantis in time for the Topaz Championship.

7. Like many others in his clan, Kenki will take great risks while pursuing his goals. Unlike many of them though, he holds Bushido in somewhat higher regard. This is unfortunately counterbalanced by the fact that even though he knows others can and will act dishonorably, he himself tends to only see the best in others.

8. Courage and Compassion are the virtues Kenki holds dearest. This does not mean that he does not value the other virtues or try to uphold them, but sometimes the nature of Honor is just so fluid...

9. That Kenki can lay claim to the legacies of heroes such as Kaimetsu-Uo and Yoritomo is a source of pride for him. Now if only the other Great Clans would recognize that...

10. Kenki is not married or betrothed. Though his parents are rich and influential, neither have seen fit to betroth him to anyone just yet. Of course, this will likely change depending on Kenki's performance in the Topaz Championship.

11. Kenki tends to have few prejudices, even if he knows that there is a reason Scorpion tend to have bad reputations.

12. Though he has only met him once, Kenki feels a great deal of loyalty to the Mantis Clan Champion Yoritomo. This is followed by his immediate family and his sensei.

13.A good game of Kemari or listening to music is always time well spent!

14. Kenki has few recurring mannerisms, though he does have a habit of tapping his fingers rhythmically along hard surfaces if he's bored and waiting for something.

15. Kenki laughs easily when jokes are made, and sympathizes easily with the plights of others. Anger is most easily incited in him if he discovers that he has been deceived.

16. It would depend largely on the nature of their improper behavior, who knows about it, and the usefulness of the subordinate. Seppuku is not something he would go to unless as a last resort.

17. Kenki's father died in a duel against a Daidoji samurai, but he believed that his son was capable of great things if he applied himself. Kenki's mother, though often times distant due to her work as a diplomat to the Crane Clan, thinks the same and is hoping to secure an influential betrothal after the Topz Championship is over. Unbeknownst to Kenki, she was the driving force behind his acquisition of his Storm Kama and his entry into the Topaz Championship. Now if only he could be less naive and wild...

18. To be nothing less than Mantis Clan Champion of course! That being said, Kenki is still young. All he really knows is that he wants to serve his Clan in as glorious a manner as possible.

19. Kenki makes sure to spend at least a little time praying to the ancestors and the Fortunes, even if he is not very pious otherwise.

20. In as glorious a manner as possible, of course! Truth be told, Kenki does not know. He is still young and has never killed anyone yet, and so sometimes he fears that he will hesitate or become afraid at the last moment and shame the Mantis.

A third voice joined the two- not raised in boasting, but instead with quiet confidence. "I am Kakita Natsuki of the Crane."

The voice came from a young woman, stepping up besides the other two Samurai-to-be. At first glance, she didn't look much like a Kakita or indeed a Crane, seeming to have more of the features of a Bayushi- but then, she bore the insignia of the Crane on her clothes.

Natsuki bowed respectfully to the other two. "I, too, have come to compete in the Topaz Championship. It is a pleasure to meet you both."

1. "I am of the Crane, the clan of the Lady Doji."
2. "I am Kakita, and proudly so."
3. *smiles* Many among my family would call what we do an art. And I will most likely spend more time in the courts than on the battlefield- but when I complete my gempukku, I will be a bushi."
4. "Many would say I look more like a Bayushi than a Crane. I take more after my mother than my father physically- lithe, beautiful in… I think the term used to describe the Bayushi most often is 'dangerously beautiful', and I know others have thought that of me, even if they do not say it."
5. "Everyone says I have great potential. I would like to live up to that, if I can."
6. "Kakita Mami- my mother, I think. She has always taken the time to listen, and she has never talked down to me."
7. "My determination to see all the Clans as ultimately servants of the Emperor above all else is my greatest strength, I think. Weaknesses… I have no true experience outside of the dojo yet, unfortunately. I hope to change that."
8. "Duty is the entire reason for a Samurai's existence. All other parts of Bushido come afterwards, although they are all important."
9. "While great, I sometimes wonder if we forget that the Empire is the reason for us to be instead of the other way around."
10. "I am betrothed. To a young samurai of the Phoenix- one of the non-Shugenja of the Isawa. We've become friends the times we've met, but both of us know we have little chance of more than that. That's fine, though."
(Answer changed since game start)
"I am not betrothed- my family has shown no particular hurry to do so, and although I am uncertain why, I... will not object to the time to consider."
11. "I admit, I wonder why some of the Minor clans exist- they serve no purpose to the Empire as a whole. The Tortoise in particular!"

"I am Mirumoto Anzu of the Dragon." Shouted a fourth voice after the Crane, one that barely could contain its excitement. She had to admit she certainly couldn't back at home where her parents and sensei announced her involvement in the most prestigious Gempukku of all, the opportunity of her lifetime, but right now all she needs was to remember her training and to keep her On. "And I intend to take part in this Topaz Championship."

Anzu walked out of the square and with a relieved sigh she stepped next to the three soon-to-be samurai. Aside from the... good looking Crane there was a young, tiny Crab and a Mantis boy, all of them eager to prove themselves for their families and clans, and in front of the Emperor Toturi-sama.

Just like her.

"Greetings, honorable Hida-san, Kakita-san, Yoritomo-san." She said, bowing respectfully. A tiny smile adorned her face before disappearing an instant later. "May this day find you all in good shape."

Name: Mirumoto Anzu Shizuki
Clan: Dragon
Age: 17
School: Mirumoto Taoist Swordmen [Bushi]

Insight: 162
Exp: 20

Honor: 6.9
Glory: 2.5
Status: 2.5

1. The Twenty Questions

1. Anzu Shizuki is from the Dragon Clan, well known in Rokugani society as a clan shrouded in enigma and mysticism.

2. Anzu Shizuki's family is the Mirumoto, the military arm that sustains the Dragon Clan, and the most numerous family of them all.

3. Anzu Shizuki is a warrior who trust in her own skill, and as such, she respects those who she recognizes as warriors. She also feels respect for the monks whom she has trained with on her time back in the Dragon Mountains.

4. Anzu Shizuki is a girl of average size, blue eyes and a black hair that can cover half her back when untied. She *tries* to not show emotion whatsoever, rather living according to the discipline inculcated on her as part of her training which she's devoted to. Still, she finds herself smiling from time on time when she finds herself enjoying her given tasks. She wears the simplest of clothes and true to her sensei's teachings, she lives and acts with modesty.

5. Anzu Shizuki aspires to take over the Taoist Swordmen Dojo and become a sensei herself; just like the one she admires the most. The same person who personally trained her through the years, Mirumoto Dokai.

6. Apart of trusting in her own acquired skills, Anzu Shizuki trust in both her family and her sensei, who in turn they hope she'll acquire experience through the path of steel.

7. Anzu Shizuki's greater strength is her perseverance, and the discipline she shows in whatever she proposes to do. This is turn can become her weakness, as it also may cause her to not be able to appreciate her surroundings.

8. Anzu Shizuki firmly believes that Bushido is the cornerstone of the Empire, and there's nothing outside it. By influence of her mother who was a Matsu before marrying into the Dragon, she also believes all tenets holds the same importance. Personally, Anzu Shizuki considers that both Duty and Sincerity holds a bit more of weight than the rest, and thus she wants to live according to what those state.

9. Having been raised hearing stories of both the Lion and the Dragon Clans, Anzu Shizuki believes that action weights more than words and one must make a path for themselves in order to find enlightment, very much like the clan she's part of who decided to do the same in the beginning of the empire.

10. Anzu Shizuki isn't married and even less betrothed, nor she has the idea of marriage in mind, not for now. She knows that one day she'll have to, for it is the duty every single samurai must comply. Her parents were those few lucky enough to find love, and so they always believed an arrangement for Anzu Shizuki goes against what they always tried to teach her.

11. With all of what she has learned on her short life, Anzu Shizuki thinks of the Crane as a clan that fell in arrogance, that which doesn't allow them to seek enlightement. She also has some prejudice against the Scorpion, believing that their words often has more than one meaning, and she finds their affinity for masks... strange.

12. Anzu Shizuki owes loyalty to Mirumoto Dokai, a friend of her family and the sensei who has foreseen her training thought out these years. Next to him comes her parents, daimyo and clan.

13. Anzu Shizuki enjoys her time spent on her training, and prefers physical activity in open spaces rather than meditation. After this, her favorite things are dango and other sweets, and finds delightment whenever she put her hands on those. She also likes to play Go whenever the opportunity arises. Unfortunately, and despite knowing the situation her clan is due to its geography, she dislikes the so called "mountain tuna" even if she's adapted to eat it.

14. Even with all the discipline and effort she puts, Anzu Shizuki can find herself feeling anxious when she knows something big is approaching, expressed in the way she tries to seek something to put her attention on. She also tries to find her comfort by moving her legs while sit and not meditating.

15. Anzu Shizuki finds herself giggling when she's doing she enjoys, or is fascinated by something, despite knowing how important is to keep her On at all times and how little difficulty is for her to do so. She's not prone to quick anger, but she finds annoying when someone isn't being honest enough with her.

16. Anzu Shizuki tends to correct a subordinate's mistake according to what she has learn on her training, which is by what the Tao states. The use of steel is for protecting those who can't protect themselves, and seppuku is an acceptable course of action when the offense is grave enough.

17. Anzu Shizuki's parents have mixed when talking about her, but nonetheless they consider her presence a bliss. She took most of what she is from her mother, who raised her with stories of battles and deeds. Her father always wondered from where Anzu Shizuki's enthusiasm and energy comes from, but he's glad his friend managed to make Anzu Shizuki direct her efforts on the rigorous training of the Taoist Swordmen, polishing her innate skill with the blade to the best of his capacities. It was their parents and sensei who sought a recommendation and an entry to the Topaz Championship from the Clan's champion, seeing the opportunity as a good experience for Anzu Shizuki overall.

18. Her principal ambition is to become the sensei of the Mirumoto Taoist Swordmen Dojo, and teach the next generation of samurai with stories of her experiences and deeds. To do so, she wishes to be able to acquire as much experience as she can, traveling through the empire and facing many opponents.

19. Anzu Shizuki follows the Tao of Shinsei, more than the fortunes, and recites it as part of her daily training. Despise not being a pious girl, Anzu Shizuki still prays to minor fortunes like Natsu-Togumara or Chagatai or Jurojin from time on time, either with a plea or just presenting words of thanks.

20. Anzu Shizuki expects to have a long life so she can fill it with experiences, despite knowing how close to death a samurai lives. Should this be not possible, she would not have any trouble to find her death against a stronger opponent so she can in turn become an experience for her killer and those who comes after.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:
- Prodigy [Physical] (12 Points)
You are a marvel of the dojo, and your sensei believe that you will accomplish incredible things in your lifetime. Whenever you make a School Skill Roll, you gain a bonus of +1k0 to the roll.

- Strength of the Earth [Physical] (2 Points)
In your soul can be found the spirit of the mountains and the strength of stone. You can overcome injuries that would cripple other men. The TN penalties you suffer from Wound Ranks are reduced by 3. Bushi characters may purchase this Advantage for 2 points.

- Seven Fortunes's Blessing: Benten [Spiritual] (Heritage table. 3 Points)
The Fortunate of Romantic Love has showered you with her blessings. Whenever you are attempting to persuade someone, regardless of the circumstances, you gain a bonus of +0k1 to the total of the Social Skill Roll in question. This bonus only applies to persuasion, not coercion.

- Hero of the People [Social] (Obtained through interlude "The Path of Steel". 0 Points)
Although your reputation among your fellow samurai may not be any better than that of the next individual, your actions have garnered the adoration of the common folk. When meeting citizens of Rokugan who are not members of the samurai caste, the TN for them to recognize you, as determined by your Glory Rank, is lowered by 10.

Disadvantages:
- Ascetic [Mental] (0 Points)
You have no taste for or interest in material things, and this minimalist attitude has impacted how others view you. Your School Outfit includes only weapons, armor, clothing, necessary tools of the trade for your profession (such as scroll satchel for shugenja), and nothing else. Any time you would be awarded Glory as a result of your actions, you receive only half the normal amount. Coupled with the normal restriction for Monks in gaining Glory, ascetic monk characters would only gain one quarter the normal amount of Glory. This Disadvantage is worth 3 points to Dragon or Monk characters.

- Driven [Mental] (2 Points)
You are possessed by some goal, and will sacrifice almost anything to accomplish it, even your honor. Family, friends, material possessions, and even Bushido mean nothing compared to the potential completion of this goal, whatever it may be. Goal: To become the sensei of the Taoist Swordmen Dojo.

- Idealistic [Mental] (2 Points)
You adhere closely to the code of Bushido, perhaps too closely, and you have a hopelessly naive view of the world and hos things work. You have impossible standards that not even the most heroic individual could hope to meet, much less you. Whenever you lose Honor, the loss is increased by 1 point. This Disadvantage is worth 3 points to Lion characters.

Overconfident [Mental] (3 Points)
You possess a grossly inflated view of your own prowess, and are often incapable of recognizing when a situation is beyond your ability to handle. When outnumbered or facing a clearly superior enemy (whether in court or in battle) you must succeed at a Perception Trait Roll (TN 20) in order to recognize the situation for what it is and leave instead of engaging. This Disadvantage is worth 4 points to Lion and Mantis characters.

Heritage table result
Your ancestor had a romantic affair during winter court that was the inspiration for many pillow books. Some of that past glory refl ects on you. You gain 0.5 Glory and may take the Advantage Seven Fortunes Blessing: Benten's Blessing for 1 less Experience Point.

Nooooooooo, beaten to the grand entrance!

Tomoe slowed from the quick trot she'd broken in to when the first voices called out, not wanting to rush in to the square even if her heart was skipping every other beat. The journey hadn't been long or particularly difficult but her sides still ached from the send off her sisters had given her. She might have been chosen by Ikoma-sensei to represent the clan and school with her talents, but the Matsu had their own ways to look after and her siblings' attention to tradition showed their care for her place in the family. It didn't make her any less certain Akane nee-san had slipped weights in to her length of bamboo before getting her hits in, but big sisters would be big sisters.

She strode in to the square with her shoulders back, chin up and eyed the aspirants already gathered there. Of course there'd have to be a Crab.

The tiny bard planted herself a fair distance away from the towering amazon and unbearably pretty looking Crane then threw her head back, long golden hair flicking her neck. "Matsu Tomoe, daughter of the Lion, student of Ikoma presents herself to this, the Topaz Championship!"

She snapped forward in a bow to the officiants, then rose and turned to her fellow competitors, bowing to each in turn without so much as a wince. "I am honored to make your acquaintances Mirumoto-san, Hida-san, Yoritomo-san, Kakita-san." She paused before the last one, something about this girl just not quite squaring with the Cranes she'd seen before, but dismissed the thought. Plenty of time for study later after all.

Felt kind of like doing this IC, I can rewrite it as a slightly less exuberant OOC if requested.
  1. "Lion Clan! Strongest, bravest, noblest, just generally best most loyal, faithful, puissant, and honorable of the Great Clans. Modesty? Leave that to someone else, we roar!"
  2. "The Matsu family. Yes. No really. Yes that Matsu family. I'm serious! Stop laughing! Rrrrrrgggggh!"
  3. "Well...if you must label it like that, a courtier I suppose. But singing the songs of the Clan, pointing out the lessons of the past to people who'd like the quick and easy way, it's hardly proper courtiering with all that low intrigue and whispering the others do. Face to face and out in the open, that's the way to handle things."
  4. "How would others...Well, I mean...Do I? Sigh....the short one. Mother says I'm pretty enough in a sort of tiny, doll-like way, but that's not exactly high praise when your sister's swords are almost as tall as you are. Sensei praises me though, he says he's never had such an emotive performer in all his years and that my mouth is far bigger than it looks, which now that I'm thinking about it..."
  5. "Motivation? I want to fight everyone. No, everyone. Not kill everyone! That's not the point at all! If I've fought everyone, then when I tell their story I'll be in it and so will the clan. If they die they die, if I die, well...at least another bard will have a good song out of it! 'The Little Lion that Fought the World.' Has a nice ring to it right?"
  6. "Ikoma-sensei. After mother umm...suggested it wouldn't be a good idea for me to enter the family school he took me in, patched me up, sat me down and made me start reading the clan history aloud until my throat was raw. Then we had tea. I guess having a place felt good, and he showed me how much bigger the clan was than just Matsu or Akoda or Ikoma or Kitsu, the full breadth of wonderful, glorious history and tradition!"
  7. Easy: My size. Biggest...don't laugh...weakness right there. Ikoma-sensei would try and tell you it's how hot-headed I can get and forget that emotion has its proper time and place in the performance but trust me, that's just the sake talking. As for my strength, I think he'd agree that I'm fearless. Nothing scares me, nothing stops me, I see my fights through to the end, and pour the drinks afterwards."
  8. Bushido? It's everything. If our lives are the ink, it is the hand that wields the brush. We're formless without it, chaotic, honorless. Yeah, some of the tenets are hard...Courage as the Akodo like to quote and Honesty present a few problems. Backing down from a fight is somehow more courageous than staring your opponent straight in the eye and seeing what they've got? And Honesty, well sometimes the story just takes on a life of its own you know? Maybe it wasn't exactly the a dozen trained warriors, but it sure felt like it and sometimes Sincerity has to play trump. Right?"
  9. "Let me quote a great historian on this one, 'Lion Clan! Strongest, bravest, noblest, just generally best most loyal, faithful, puissant, and honorable of the Great Clans.' Not much left to be said after that, she pretty much wrote the book on it there."
  10. "Oh? Interested? Oh. No? Well, no. Not married. There's this...never mind. Complicated."
  11. "Prejudices? Apart from the Cranes being a bunch of preening dissemblers, the Phoenixes being far too comfy in the 'peace' our bloodshed bought them, and the Scorpions with their villainous, honor-bereft prettiness? No, I'm the spirit of camaraderie and good will provided they keep their flaws in check and can have a good time."
  12. "The family daimyo. I might be training in the Ikoma dojo, but my duty still lies with the Matsu. There has to be someone around to dodge punches and sword-blows to record the histories after all."
  13. "I like walks. Just getting on the road and seeing what I can find. I'm not great at actually finding anything in particular but wandering around always turns up something interesting. What I don't like? I guess it'd have to be long ceremonies. I try hard, and sensei's clipped me enough times that I can feel the breeze before he strikes but I just have a hard time with it."
  14. "Well...sensei has pointed out that I tend to...well for the lack of a better term, pose? My stance is always just a little bit overstated and big. Plus when I get bored I start humming."
  15. "Don't question my honor, my family name, my skill, my looks. I will get angry, but it usually passes like a summer storm. That I tend to control a bit at least, much as I'd like to lay in to ever last...Ahem. Anyway, laughter is harder. If something's funny my face goes all froggy, hehe."
  16. "Well, I've gotten plenty of second chances. Going to the Ikoma dojo, sensei smoothing out some of my rougher Matsu edges, so if I had a subordinate that was behaving improperly I guess they'd get a few punches in the back of the head, some acts of contrition, and the promise not to do so again unless they're drunk."
  17. "I think mother's proud of me now. At first...well she wanted all her daughters in the Pride. I think being sent to the Topaz Championship, even under the Ikoma School has made her pleased though. So long as I don't dishonor the Matsu name of course."
  18. "I want a story that's told in the clan for generations to come. It might sound selfish, but it's not the immortality that I want so much as being able to inspire and hopefully teach even after I'm gone, good and bad. 'Oh, don't do that, remember what happened to her!' or 'She'd cuff you good if she could see you doing that.' All the best stories have a little of both."
  19. "Well, I leave a cup of sake for the old man, and pray a bit before every nap. My father was from Ikoma, so the fit wasn't entirely unnatural, but I still honor the Lion Thunder before battle. It's not temple stuff, but the ancestors are in my heart and mind."
  20. "Either at the hand of a villain or beside my friends on the battlefield. I'm too restless to die in my sleep!"

"The pleasure's mine, Matsu-san. I hope your journey to this distant land were the most pleasant." Anzu replied, bowing accordingly to the Lion Bard. She looks fierce and eager nonetheless, just like how her mother told her once.

Her gentle smile remaining, Natsuki looked around the impromptu gathering. A Mirumoto, a Hida, a Yoritomo, and, of course, a Matsu.

She smiled in return. There was something about this Matsu that didn't exactly mesh with her expectations- but then, she did not have much room to talk about that herself, did she? Bowing to the two newest comers, she smiled. "And to you as well, Matsu-san, Mirumoto-San. My own journey was uneventful- but then, I truly did not have to travel far, and my path was not wholly unfamiliar."

She paused. "Even if it has been years since my last visit."

"Ah, it was relatively uneventful Mirumoto-san, though not so distant from my mother's home. You and Hida-san must have far more to tell about the trip than I!" Her eyes lit up at the thought of what excitement they might have encountered on the long roads from the their lands before noting the pregnant pause in Kakita-san's response.

Tomoe's eyebrow arched up like a little golden caterpillar, "Oh? You've been here before Kakita-san?" She hadn't been allowed to go when Kamiko nee-san competed, but considering how that had gone she counted herself lucky.

"A cousin of mine competed, and my mother obtained permission for us both to go and see her nephew compete. I admit, I remember little of it, though. I was only seven at the time."

Natsuki smiled. "In truth, I am interested in your trips as well, Yoritomo-san, Mirumoto-san, Hida-san."

"Ah well, in truth my journey here was largely uneventful." Kenki scratched the back of his head awkwardly. There had been that one incident with the Mirumoto and the Shinjo samurai on his journey to Tsuma, but he doubted that he would ever tell anyone about that. "This also isn't my first time here in Tsuma. Many years ago my mother's duties required her to come here and she brought me along. I remember but little of it as I was seven as well, but if what little memory serves I believe a Unicorn won that year."

"It was quite a journey, indeed. We encountered some Lion squads on our way here, who while performing their duty requested to check on our papers. That aside, our journey was uneventful." Anzu nodded, then let out another sigh. Aside of the... impression the city of Rusashi has caused on her, and that one incident back in Kaeru Toshi, there wasn't nothing else.

That was then, and this is now.

"I must admit this is my first time here." Anzu declared, her blue eyes starting to shine with fascination. "In fact, this is my first time going so far from the mountains we of the Dragon call our home. It was quite an experience."

Tomoe clapped her hands, a smile playing across her lips, "Well! I hope this tournament lasts in our memories for years to come, and I may tell of this day with pride at the honor my opponents showed, " before I wiped the mats with them.

"If you wouldn't mind though, perhaps we could continue this conversation as we walk? I'd like to get a look at the village and perhaps find my way to the representatives of my clan before the sun grows too much lower in the sky. We have a glorious day ahead of us tomorrow and I'm sure some of us might want extra study." Her eyes lingered on the looming Crab warrior, narrowing slightly over the smile fixed on her lips. "There are few excerpts from Adoko-kami's Leadership I know I would like to review before the Bushido tests, though if anyone would like to borrow them they are more than welcome."

"It's good to meet you all! Truly!" Haruko bows politely, which is a little odd coming from the girl who already had the stature of an adult, to the other youths. "You're all..." She trailed off as she rose, arms crossing absently as she tried to recall if she should know these families or not.

"Great Samurai, I'm sure of it, and I look forward to our contests in the days ahead!"

Yep, she had very little idea, clearly she must conduct review.

"Ah! You're correct!" Haruko gasps, straightening at the reminder of her studies by the... adorably tiny girl, was she only Seven? Eight? Truly a genius beyond compare to be here amongst the others! It was all she could do to give the child a big hug and encourage her to do her best... But that would be somewhat of a violation of On, and she wasn't quite that uncouth. "I've attempted to review on the road, but there is much to learn and so little time to master it! I was truly not expecting to be nominated here, so this trip came as something of a surprise, though a pleasant one I will admit."

Natsuki blinked. The Crab was certainly… enthusiastic. Perhaps overly so- but still, her enthusiasm was strangely infectious. There was something about the Matsu, though… her veiled insult was remarkably well-placed, even if it seemed to slide off the cheerful Crab like water.

Or, more likely, she didn't recognise the insult. I respect the sacrifice of the Crab for their Duty, but it will leave her at a disadvantage here.

Speaking up, she smiled slightly, eyeing Tomoe. "Of course, Matsu-san. I would be happy to talk as we make our way to the village."

"Before you attend to such matters, perhaps you would delay a moment."

Where did he come from?

Distracted by conversation, none of you can say where the tall man in the green kimono appeared from, but there is certainly no missing him now that he is here. His expression is stern, his eyes sharp like flint, and he wears the twin swords of the samurai in his obi. On his kimono and over his heart is a Chrysanthemum mon in yellow thread.

"Welcome to Tsuma, young samurai." He says calmly. "I am Seppun Shori. It is my honour to oversee and administrate this year's Topaz Championship."

Tomoe's face took on a masklike calm to hold back her laughter. It was as much at herself as at the Crab's obliviousness. After all, she wasn't some cruel lascivious Scorpion trying to spread poison, just a bit defensive at the huge older girl's presence. The slight having slipped by Hida-san entirely so it seemed, she felt intrigue by the genuine seeming interest. Truth be told, there was nothing quite so gratifying as being able to practice her skills.

"I would be honored to read with you should we be able Hida-san."

Forgetting herself she beamed in excitement and opened her mouth...

And froze. Her mouth clamped down in to a line and she dipped toward him, "Thank you Seppun-sama, it is an honor to be here." On...On...Keep it together Tomoe!

Natsuki's eyes flick towards the Seppun for a moment- before she bows.

Deeply. She, after all, is only a Samurai-to-be, and he is of an Imperial Family.

Also, the overseer of the Championship. "We are beyond honoured by your presence, Seppun-sama. How might this one serve?"

Inwardly, she winced- that was far too hurried for her liking.

Even if only Seppun-sama himself and Matsu-san were likely to notice.

"I would be such a honor to be mentioned as part of your experience within this championship, Matsu-san." Anzu kindly responded with a faint smile on her face. How nice of her, to make clear she'll mention the Dragon who will teach her how long is her way to go! "Your offer is truly appreciated as well, but I had plenty of time to review what I needed to review back on my journey."

Anzu finished with a bow, which is the least she can do to show some respect. Regardless of this being a subtle insult or not, clearly the Crab had a more amusing, genuine reaction, and Anzu makes an effort to not get caught by such a contagious display.

It still proves to be distracting enough, and as the Dragon girl opened her mouth to speak further with her competition...

"Before you attend to such matters, perhaps you would delay a moment."

... The timing was gone.

Anzu took a moment to meet the tall man's eyes, caught off guard by how he just came out of thin air. "Words cannot describe the honor that is to count with your presence, Seppun-sama." She spoke quickly, bowing deep to hid her face and save some On. "What can this humble soon-to-be Samurai do for you?"

"Then it is settled! I look forward to our studies in the days ahead!" Haruko smiled as she relaxed from the scrutiny. "There is no saying that we cannot all make a good showing in this contest after all!"

"And it is my honor to attend Seppun-sama" Haruko bows in turn to the overseer. Unlike some, she wasn't terribly surprised by this--she had already been distracted talking with the other young Samurai of this bunch after all! It was no surprise that the official who would be attending could approach under those conditions.

Seppun... Seppun... That was important, right? Probably. At the very least, he was one of the ones in charge, so sama was likely the appropriate honorific.

Truly, a terrific challenge to keep all of these names together! She would need to redouble her studies over the course of this contest!

Seppun Shori nods in response to your bows, which either marks him out as exceptionally arrogant or of significant status. Possibly both.

"I will not keep you long. Your names are familiar to me, and you have been expected. Welcome to the Championship, young samurai." He smiles slightly as he looks at you all. "The contestants have all been assigned rooms in the Silken Breeze tea house near the centre of the village. I would advise that you head there and freshen up from your trip, as well as meet the other entrants."

He glances up at the sun for a moment, marking its position before looking back at you. "You will be expected by the riverside in two hours. His Imperial Majesty is scheduled to arrive then, and it is his custom to inspect the year's contestants before announcing the criteria for the competition. Do not be late."

With that, the Imperial samurai nods to you again, then turns to walk away, his mind already on other topics.

Haruko evidently made the right decision with her show of respect for the man. 'When in doubt, bow and use Sama, you either look pleasantly humble or right on the nose' was one of the lessons in her manual, and she was glad that she recalled it in the right moment.

It was much simpler back home really, it was usually apparent who was in charge by who shouted the loudest and had the most battleworn armor.

"Right then, no sense wasting any time when His Imperial Majesty will be arriving shortly." Haruko concluded after the administrator had left. "To the teahouse! More time to prepare cannot hurt after all!"

Tomoe watched the imperial representative as he left, noting his face and manner of attire. Detail was important, and she couldn't wait to see the tea house, but most of all the Emperor. Just two hours to prepare!

"Absolutely Hida-san! We have much to look forward to!" The little Matsu had to admit that while she could hardly respect the Crab for her obvious deficiencies, the girl's spirit seemed pure and it mirrored her own excitement. It would also help having someone even louder than herself around for appearances, but she'd do well to avoid the girl in competition. There was no honor in proving herself against weaker minds. Now combat...

She smiled at the thought. They'd make for an interesting, albeit asymmetric and not particularly aesthetically pleasing pair. Maybe sparring though, or wrestling? Hida-san might have weight and age on her, but then she probably also didn't have sisters like Tomoe's. It bore consideration, but for now the emperor was far more important.

"Let's be off then!"

"We are honored by your presence Seppun-sama." Kenki said, bowing deeply as he did so. Was it custom for an Imperial to be administrating the competition? Kenki couldn't remember, but quickly concluded that it was most likely to have an impartial judge among the contestants.

"Our thanks for informing us, Seppun-sama. And we shall not." Bowing once more to the departing Imperial, Kenki began walking towards the teahouse, after the diminutive Matsu and the giant Hida.

Natsuki bowed deeply to the Seppun. "We shall not delay, Seppun-sama."

Two hours would give her some leeway, but not much- and she would need to make absolutely sure she was presentable. Taking the dismissal, she walked towards the village, quickly catching up to her fellow contestants.
