Follow and decide the journey of a piece of soul as it tires to get itself a new body and get revenge against those that killed it.
Prologue
The three journeys.

The paths every being in every world is set upon from birth.

And the steps they walk as they live their finite lives.

Once you were one of the unteaming masses.

Barely above an insect.

But you did not despair

You didn't give up.

You may have been nothing special but you had determination.

And so, you stole, cheated and killed, manipulated and were manipulated by others on your journey, as all cultivators do.

You were just better than the others.

Or perhaps luckier.

Time passed.

Slowly ever so slowly you rose higher.

From the first journey you rose to the second.

Leaving your peers behind while you travel to other worlds.

More time passed and you reached the third and final journey.

Becoming an existence few could match.

And in time you reached the end of this journey too.

At the end of your journey, you stood at the tenth step of the ninth path. The number of existences that matched you in all of existence couldn't have numbered more than a hundred.

You stood at the peak of existence and you could continue no further.

And you were content.

content to idle the rest of your days away (which for an immortal was forever).

Working on passion projects, slowly improving your foundation or even just lazing about reading books and playing pranks.

Who knew that playing a prank on some random mortal girl would be your ending?

A harmless prank, out of which the girl came perfectly whole and unharmed.

But that girl went and told her father, who told his friend, who told his brother and so on and so on.

And with every retailing the story was exuberated.

Until the version that reached that man was so over the top that you wonder how he believed it.

But believed it he did.

And that was how you got the unbowed king who shattered the heavens after your head.

You could not run from him and you could not fight him for he was beyond you.

While you both stood at the end of our respective journeys, you only stood at the tenth while he stood at the one-hundredth step.

He was a genius like no other and he stood at the height of power. None were his match, not in the whole of existence and beyond.

And you were nothing special. All you gained was the product of hard work and luck. you could not match him.

But you did what you always did.

You didn't despair.

And you didn't give up.

When he came for you, you stood your ground and used every trick in your book to try and beat him back.

For ten years you have fought with no stop.

All around you, thousands of worlds and realities shattered from the effect of your clashes.

You gave as good as you got but you could feel I was losing.

You become desperate.

And as a final gamble three worlds were given into the void.

The life force of trillions was used as the fuel for a last desperate attack.

It succeeded.

And seriously wounded your opponent forcing him to flee.

You had won but what victory did you win?

You were all but crippled, your body and spirit covered in uncountable wounds.

You had also exhausted your entire supply of artifacts and treasures.

Maybe that is what gave all the coward's a spine as they came for your corpse seeking to settle old scores.

your rise to the top wasn't a gentle one.

You had made many enemies over the time and in your hour of weakness they came for you.

But even as weak as you were, you were more than a match.

Yet they were many and unrelenting.

And a thousand years later they managed to corner you.

For taking your body they paid with blood. Over half annihilated in your final stand.

And for shattering and burning your soul another quarter was laid low.

But even you had limits and they were long ago met.

And so, at a random field in a random world you have met your end…

Or so they would think, for you still had one final card to play.

And as your enemies stood there in a field over the little that reminded of your body, soul and mind, feeling oh so proud with themselves for slaying you. They didn't notice the tiny soul shard that fell through the cracks of reality.

And that tiny shard carried you.

And as you fell through unreality and into the lower realm's only a single thought went through your shattered mind.

You would ascended again and take your revenge upon all who wronged you or your name wasn't---

[] Sun Rong, the slaughterer of a thousand souls.

Talentless and homeless, your future was a grim one. You learned the way of the streets in your childhood, every day struggling to stay alive.

After you were kicked out of the local sect entrance test, you came across an old and decrypt man who offered to teach you the art of cultivation. His teachings were harsh and you were a slow learner but he taught you the ways of the blood path and how to consume the power of others.

He helped you rise by consuming others and when he deemed you ready, he betrayed you and attempted to consume you.

You repaid his betrayal by consuming him and continuing on your path.

Battle after battle you have fought consuming ever greater opponents and in time knowledge and experience has seen you become a sage.

But you know that underneath all the pomp and fuss lie a best that wishes to consume it all.

[] Yin Zhenya, the mistress of a thousand poisons.

You were born to a minor noble house int the outskirts of a third-rate kingdom. You weren't too rich but your childhood was a comfortable one.

Growing up a noble was a lonely thing, little to no friends, strict parents and countless rules you had to follow but you didn't mind. You held a natural curiosity about nature and used to spend most of your time at your family gardens watching the plants and the scurrying animals both.

When a plague swept through your family's land, you fund your purpose in life in the way of the physician. You became fascinated by medicine and sought to learn all you could on its making.

By the time you were an adult you were known as one of the best physicians in your whole kingdom.

Maybe that is why the crown prince got interested in you.

When you were but nineteen winters old, your family received a marriage offer that they couldn't refuse and you were to be married to the first prince.

You wished with all your heart that the marriage wouldn't go through, for the first prince had a reputation about breaking the women he married… but you were powerless to stop him.

Or were you?

After all, what is medicine but poison in a specific dose?

For what you have done, your family was slaughtered and your home was razed to the ground.

For what they have done, you poisoned the very earth itself making it little better than a wasteland.

[] Fan Zhou, the thief who stole the sun.

It had all started when you met the young master Cai Lee on the road and he attempted to kill you when you accidentally stole some unimportant babble from him. But luck was on your side that day, the young master slipped on the wet ground when attempting to strike you and broke his neck on the stone he fell on.

You survived that day but you knew that you would be hunted down for the killing of the young master. It was then that you had a brilliant idea.

The young master was a reclusive one so he traveled alone and the sect he was traveling to was far from his family home so few if any would have recognized him. You took his clothes, his treasures and his very identity.

And two week later you -now going by the name Cai Lee- entered the flickering leaf sect.

Life at the sect was a comfortable one. You got respect for being a young master and received a large stipend for your "family" but you haven't stopped stealing, which got you into many scuffles in the sect.

It was the words of a generous elder that told why you always tried to steal things. He explained to you that you were a kleptomaniac.

Not that it stopped him from kicking you out of the sect for attempting to steal a small statue from his personal stash.

With you out of the sect and your "family" disowning you for the sham you brought upon them. You turned to what you always did to survive.

You stole, you stole people's possessions, you stole their identities, their memories and in time their very souls themselves.

And when you ascended to the second journey, in your greatest act of thieving yet, you stole the very sun from the heavens.

Plunging your old world to total darkness.

Not so long ago I cam across a rouglite cultivation quest which I liked a lot. And after finishing reading through it I got the urge to write something similar but I didn't want to copy it too much (mostly because I didn't want to do a time loop).

So, I thought about it for a time and then I remembered years ago that I read some cultivation story where the main character was a ghost that attached himself to people helped them advance and then consumed them in order to regain his power.

So, I figured why not do something like it in the form of a quest.

And so, we have this quest where you'll play a soul fragment of one of the three characters above ,while you travel from host to host attempting to raise one high enough (by teaching and giving them advice) that you could steal thier body and return to life.

After each host die's (whether from natural causes or because you led him to his death) I will award you points depending on how high he reached and various objectives and achievements. Using those points, you could buy several upgrades and benefits both permeant and temporary.

We will continue this pattern until you mange to steal someone body or anger someone who could kill you permanently.

Good luck. And I hope you will have fun on this journey.

Alright vote is closed. Yin Zhenya, the mistress of a thousand poisons, Wins.

It'll take me a bit to write the next part but I'm open to question in the meantime.

First host.
Slowly, ever so slowly, you have returned into consciousness.

How long have you been falling between the cracks of reality?

Impossible to know, but it seemed that enough time passed for your soul shard to heal.

Not much but enough to allow you the ability to stay awake... for a time.

Not that you had much to do besides thinking about which painful and cruel poison you'll use for your revenge.

Like you had so many good options.

Form the three-thousand-boiling-wraiths poison, which would boil one vary soul inflicting excruciating pain.

To the haven-defining-yellow-beetle poison, a paralytic so strong it can completely paralyze a third journey cultivator both soul and body for tens thousands of years, all the while leaving their mind completely free to agonize as they fell their death coming ever closer with no way to stop or delay it.

Or maybe the cloudless-fog-memory poison. A poison that slowly makes one's memories harder to access by fogging them over. Tormenting the infected by the inevitability of losing themselves. It's quite an ingenious design, if you can say so yourself, even allowing one to temporarily fight it off only to come back even stronger and crush their new fund hope.
But alas, even imagining how sweet your revenge is going to be got boring after a few years of falling through unreality.

Falling…

Falling…

Falling…

Until one day you fell no more.

It began with a sound of broken glass as your soul shard returned to reality.

It continued with the feeling of heat as you fell into the world on wings of fire.

And ended with a mighty boom when you crashed into the ground.

Slowly your senses returned to you and you could vaguely see where you had landed.

It seemed you have crashed I in the middle of a forest, the force of your crash toppling trees and flattening the undergrowth to create a small clearing in the forest.

From the change of the sun, you laid there for two days before you felt a suitable lifeform approach.

Soon enough the lifeform emerged into the clearing and you could finally see your potential host.

It was a human, more specifically a human child or even more correctly a teen, no older than eighteen but no younger than fourteen. He was garbed in hunter clothes and carried a hunting bow.

His occupation is probably the reason that he was the first to find you, you could tack him as a host or you could wait?

He stood at the twenty third step of the first path, which for a child of his age could be utter crap or a sign of talent in this world.

But before you choose one way or another, you should read his short-term memories to get more information about this world you found yourself in.

With a little effort and a small expenditure of energy, you flung your mind into the boy's head.
--

You are Peng Hua of the unflinching wolf's tribe.

You have been hunting when you saw the star fall into the earth. And with the knowledge that star metal is extremely valuable and bringing even a small shall would be enough to raise your standing in the tribe considerably.

With your mind fantasizing on all the resources you would get were you successful. You rushed in the direction of the fallen star with greed in your eyes.

Hoping beyond hope that your tribemates wouldn't get there before you. Or worse still members of the other tribes.

For two day you have rushed, sleeping for no more than hour each night, into where you estimated the fallen star has fallen. You were exhausted but you knew you were on the right track when you spotted many branches broken in the great trees of the forest as if a great gale from a storm Elemental had struck this place.

You knew you were close when you saw one of the great trees completely unrouted from the ground.

And soon enough you hoped above another fallen tree and into the crater where your reward awaited…

Only to find it completely empty…

How could this be?

You haven't seen any sign of other hunters reaching this place.

And looking closely at the crater you see no sign of human foot print or any sign that any being reached this place before you.

Yet…nothing was here!

You have wasted your entire hunting time chasing nothing.

You will have no time to hunt on the way back, not if you wish to make it back in time for the distribution of resources.

Not that you'll get much with no pray in hand.

Oh... this is truly not the start you have imagined for your hunter career.

Sigh… well nothing to it.

You should start to make your way back post haste. If you encounter something dangerous in your current state you'll die for sure.
--

Hmm…. This boy's memories revealed much, yet very little at the same time, should you take him as a host or not?
You have enough energy to wait for another suitable lifeform to reach you but not a lot you couldn't do this more than a time or two more.

Roll: 1d3+1 for energy: 2+1=3.
Total energy for this host= 3
Energy (sue me Im not good with names) is a resource that allows you to do many things, from enhancing your action's to rerolling your host choice, to rewriting reality itself to create or change opportunities for you or others. It rephrases after every run (every time you consume a host). Curranty every run you get 1d3+1 energy this can be upgraded later on. It's an important resource, so think twice before spending but do make sure to spend it, as it doesn't carry between runs.

You should decide now before he turns away to leave.

First host:

Race: human.

Gender: male.

Talent: ???

Significance: minor importance (hunter).

Standing: ???

anything special: ???

Age: 14-18

Starting cultivation: 1st path 23rd step.

Morality: ???

Computability: ???

[] Take this boy as your host. (End host selection phase and enter normal turns).
[] Let him leave and wait for someone else hoping to get someone better. (-1 energy, gain another host choice but lose the current one).

Also, whether you vote for trying for another host or not. You should vote for how you would introduce yourself to this one should that option win.

[] introduce yourself as his ancestor who returned to this earthly realm to help her descendants. (Peng Hua will trust you more, you aren't restricted in the techniques you can offer him, risky as you know little about this region -or world for that matter- to play that role connivingly for long)

[] introduce yourself as a divine servant who is here to repay some good deed, he did in a past life. (Peng Hua will trust you more, you are restricted from teaching him any knowledge that isn't approved by heaven.)

[] introduce yourself as a restless spirit. (No malus or bonus to Peng Hua trust but he will attempt to follow your directions in the hopes of putting you to rest, no restriction in your teaching, it is inevitable that Peng Hua will someday complete the task that "kept" you here and find out that you've lied to him).

[] introduce yourself as a wandering spirit. (Peng Hua will trust you less but will attempt to use you to the best of his capabilities, no restriction to your teaching).

Cultivation in the three journey's world.
Cultivation in the three journey's world.

Cultivation in this quest will work a little differently than normal, while still remaining true to both the xinxia and rouge-lite spirit.

In the world of the three journeys there are three cultivation realms called the three journeys (title drop).

They go as such:

1. the physical journey.

2. the mental journey.

3. the spiritual journey.

Each journey possesses nine paths.

Numbered as path 1-9.

And in each path, there are endless steps.

You might be asking yourselves "if there are endless steps how do you know when to advance to the next path?"

Well, the cultivation system works like a pyramid. In order to support a higher point, you need a deeper base. In this case for every step, you want to take on a path you need to have double that number of steps on the path below it. (For ex… let's say you want to take the 3rd step on the 4th path, in order to do it you need to have 6th steps on the third path, which require 12 steps on the 2nd path and 24 steps on the 1st path)

And this is where we divert from the norm a little, you both can and are expected to walk more than one path at a time and so long as the paths you're cultivating aren't too far apart from your highest path you don't receive a penalty for cultivating it.

Steps along the same path have about the same difficulty to walk, a difficulty which rises very slowly as you journey further down that path.

A step of a higher path is more difficult to walk on then those of a lower path and the difficulty curve is faster but you only count the steps of the path you're attempting to go down. As such a step of a lower path can have a higher difficulty then one of a higher path on a path you haven't journeyed far on.

Of course, a step of a higher path is also worth more power than a step of a lower one. Every step on a path is worth the path number (1-9) of steps of the path lower than it (path one is equal to one). (For example, a step of the 6th path is worth 6 steps of the 5th path and so on one and on).

Don't be afraid of the big numbers that this creates, as I said this quest is staying true to the xinxia spirit (of having the divine emperor of one region be a random thug in the next region over) and the rouge-lite spirit (of meta progression making previously hard challenges easy).

I'll explain the specific mechanics of cultivation and your victory condition after your first host character is chosen.

We are kept in this world by the existence of the Emperor.

Lol. The most general answer.
