Hmmm...

Well, on one hand, they're Turanic Raiders. On the other hand, clearly something decidedly odd is going on if they've formed a pirate coalition like thi-... and now I'm wondering just what the hell has the Illuminated Primacy done.

Okay, admittedly that's unfair of me to immediately jump to that but in my experience, religious extremists aren't often veritable fonts of wisdom, foresight and common sense, and given the content of the previous chapter I can't help but suspect that the Hanar poked or mucked about with something that they should have damn well left alone. Like, maybe they tried to domesticate/indoctrinate - little 'i' not big 'I' - a handful of Turanic Rachni Princesses to try and get a second client race under their sway similar to how they rescued the Drell, and screwed it up.

In any case...

Could we crush them? Yeah, probably. They don't have much in the way of heavy firepower by all appearances; not on the level that we've been fighting at any rate. We'd certainly take a bit of a beating but between our hulls and assorted firepower, our Flicker Friends and our many, many, many drones, we should be able to break the back of their coalition in short order (unless something unexpected happens). But they might be possessing of the correct combination of reason, self preservation and respect for superior firepower to be open to discussion. After all, it's possible that they have a good reason to be preparing to Zerg Rachni Rush something or someone.

As a gentle reminder, when it comes to pure Engineering work, we've got an edge over the rest of our Flotilla, whereas Aurora's strength is in Logistics projects. Though, it occurs to me that our Irunese Flicker Friends are probably also fair hands at Logistics, given their galactic reputation. By that logic, the Kadeshi should be decent engineers themselves, theoretically. Might be interesting to let one of our Flicker Friends take the reigns completely on a research project at some point... 🤔

Hmm, actually got a close vote this time for the research. Though everyone wanted to talk, and no one voted for a codex. I'll start working on the next update then.
Scheduled vote count started by Arcanestomper on Jan 23, 2023 at 11:49 PM, finished with 15 posts and 8 votes.

Sorry for the delay. Something happened in one of my other games that has well kind of just put me off the mood for writing anything. This is the first thing on my list once I cheer up a bit though.

Interlude: The Queen of the Damned

Interlude: The Queen of the Damned

Deep in the heart of the hive ship lay a tank. And in that tank lay a horror. An amalgamation of ancient Rachni corpses spliced together with barely understood Progenitor technology by Primacy scientists. She was The-One-Who-Feels, and what she felt was Pain. The pain of her abberant body, the pain of jumbled memories, the pain of her desperate adopted children, and most of all the pain of Crimson Chorus. The chorus burned at her, twisted her, and sought to corrupt her with a million voices, a billion whispering souls.

They told her to give up. To give in. To allow the chorus to soothe her. But she did not. The pain of her body kept her in the now. The pain of her memories rooted her in the past. And most of all the pain of her children focused her on the future. She would not fail them, and so she resisted the chorus of screams. Around her tank her newfound children worked tirelessly to build her a hive worthy of her status as queen of the Tattered-Castoff-Untouchable swarm. They had already cleared out the corpses of those who had sought to tame her and rebuilt their primitive science vessel according to her more intact memories.

Around her the rest of the swarm hovered patiently, defensively, her five adopted daughters raised their voices in a counterpoint to the chorus to keep her grounded and stabilized against the strain. The-One-Who-Feels knew she would not be left alone forever. Her would be masters had sent their signals out before she had silenced them, and the Crimson Chorus whispered of its arrival. But she had not expected the ones who had arrived instead.

Her memories told her of gold ships and solitary voices. The messengers of the True Gods. Her children told her of fiery death and relentless pursuit. The harbingers of Death. Her ravaged body strained to see for itself reaching out with half completed sensors. A fleet of warships, but only a handful of Singers. Half deaf things they were, but better than the animals that had awoken her.

They were screeching at her with the bleating of animals. They must not realize she was a singer as well. Well she would inform them. Opening her many mouths she wailed into the aether.

[ ] A Song of Anger
She was in pain and in no mood for interruptions. This was HER space! And if those interlopers thought they could come hear and screech at her they had another thing coming. She would make that very clear to them.

[ ] A Dirge of Grief
The harbingers of Death had come and she was not ready. Her children would die. She would die. She would mourn, but perhaps it was for the best. At last her pain would end.

[ ] A Melody of Curiosity
Through the deepest of her memories she remembered the true gods. Did these golden messengers remember. Could they tell her what happened in the long years of silence.

Quest Note: Didn't have time to write the full post today, but I know if I keep putting it off I'll just feel more guilty and less willing to write. So here's a quick interlude to try and get myself out of the rut.

Sounds like an interesting way for us to learn more about the galaxy (On both ends of this, both the franken-queen and our boy Valerius an Co)

Well, now that is some messed up crap. The Hanar of the Illuminated Primacy Mary Shelley'd themselves a Rachni Queen, lost control of her, then tried to cover it up and get the Taiidan to kill her even as the Turanic Raiders rallied to her.

This could be either a very serious problem or a very interesting opportunity. But I do hope that our flotilla learns of this properly because I'm suddenly of the opinion that the Primacy should be punished for this.

[X] A Melody of Curiosity
I'm intrigued that attempting to communicate is an option, and we may be able to learn very interesting things from her. Hopefully we won't have to kill her, but if she's suffering so much then it may be a kindness.
