Yeah, it's dumb... but in this case they've simply put a political thriller into the Purge series. :\

The second movie was legitimately good tho

Like, not great, but good.

This movie could also be good if it followed the pattern of the second: to be not about its nominal plot, but about a cast of characters moving through independant vignettes of a dystopian America that is giving in to its dark urges.

The second movie is one of the best Punisher movies that doesn't actually feature the Punisher.

I am also disappointed that nobody noticed this: the tagline of the movie is 'Keep America Great'.

I was expecting the senator to take advantage of the Purge to murder the ever-loving fuck out of her political opponents while telling Americans to believe in their own justice and fight their own wars.

Oh no it was sort of trash. Like the whole premise of the setting is "what if people stopped acting at all like normal human beings" just like Pyschopass (oooh I'm naughty).

But I still love it. It's silly shit and I love it. I'm pretty sure these movies are just pre-packaged guilty pleasures. They're never going to be good and tbh I don't want them to be.

I really need to see the second.

I was among those commenting on the stupidity of the plot of the first one, but it seems that the second addresses a fair number of those story flaws.

Also, I heard someone describe it as "The Punisher ends up in a slasher film" and that pretty much sold me on the movie.
