It has doubtless come to your attention that the world is on fire. It's leaders are inept, corrupt, fascist idiots and they are holding humanity hostage for no greater purpose than wanton greed.
I don't know if I can stop them, but I am in a unique position to try.
[ ] CEO| You have inherited the position of head bureaucrat of a hideously powerful corporation after successfully assassinating your father. You immediately cut your own salary of course, but that still leaves you a massive inheritance and a world-spanning cooperate empire. By centuries-old inheritance law, the board of directors can't get rid of you for a year, so you need to make to make that time count.
[ ] Tyrant| You led a coo against the fascist dictatorship of your small, third-world nation. Now comes the hard part, actually running it. You've got to keep the country from completely falling apart, prevent conquest from neighboring nations, appease the superpowers who see you as pawn in their chess games, and maybe, somewhere along the line, actually improve the lives of your people.
[ ] Underboss| You've scraped and clawed your way to the top of a city-spanning crime syndicate. The crooks and murders in charge of this city are running it into the ground, so it's only proper that a crook and a murderer like you should be the one to lift it back up again. The don before you called this gang a "family," even as he ruled through fear and pain. You will make a truth of his lie, a true family in every way. Your family will look after it's own, as his did not, and perhaps you will not share the fate that he did.
Your world is a strange and vivid one, and in addition to the banality of human greed and corruption, you will face stranger and grander obstacles in your path.
Worldbuilding| In this Quest, you will have a say in the lore of the world(although this writer reserves the right of veto). Choose any or all:
[ ] Magic| There are forces in this world that listen to the will of the human soul, and can be shaped to monstrous and horrible effect.
[ ] Super-Tech| There are people in this world who can build marvelous technologies beyond what science could dream of. Such tools are rarely, if ever, used to benefit humanity.
[ ] Good Neighbors| There exist other realms of existence parallel to our own, the inhabitants of which are almost uniformly bastards.
[ ] Crossover Potential| There are other universes and multiverses that are highly copyrighted, and hypothetically reachable.
[ ] Eldritch| There are beings beyond the extremities of understood reality and human thought, offering power in exchange for increasing their foothold in this world.
[ ] Aliens| There are other worlds in this universe, teeming with life just like ours, ruled by conquerers and murderers just like ours.
[ ] Steampunk| There is also anachronistic technology, such as airships and clockwork automata, that somehow function even though the principles they were based on have been thoroughly disproven.
[ ] Cyberpunk| The technology to augment the body with artificial implants and dangerous drugs is relatively common(if highly illegal).
[ ] Gods| Beings of great power and capricious whims, who occasionally lend such power to certain mortals who embody their preferred ideals. It is unclear whether worship is something they require, or merely enjoy.
[ ] Kitchen Sink| All of the above.
Some things never change, but some problems and opportunities are completely unique to the current time. If the fates are kind, the world might survive to see the next age...
[ ] The Jazz Age: The war to end all wars ended, and now the world must bury it's corpses. Moralistic prohibitions against necessities like alcohol and witchcraft have successfully turned most of your country into criminals and scofflaws. Business is booming for the gangster and the stock-ticker alike, but surely this age of gin and giggles can't last. A world of lawlessness, without heroes or supervillains to get in your way(yet).
[ ] The Golden Age: [ ] The Golden Age: Superheroes have arrived, a beacon of hope in a time of catastrophic economic depression. Wheat is being burned and milk is being poured out on the street in a desperate attempt to raise prices, even as people starve. The towers of the mighty fell, and it's up to you to pick up the pieces, even as another war is brewing on the horizon.
[ ] The Atomic Age: The second war to end all wars has ended, and the horrible new superweapon it birthed has ensured that no war like it can happen ever again(at least, not for longer than a few minutes). In it's place, the superpowers of the world have decided to play chess games with each other, fighting through spies and proxies rather than outright conflict. Most superheroes were killed off in the fighting, or retired quickly after, leaving the world open to villains like you.
[ ] The Silver Age: The game of heroes and villains has been going on for multiple generations by now, and most if not all have become aware of the tropes and cliches instituted by their forebears. The nations of the world have cracked down on their superheroes, forcing them to abide by a highly restrictive rules of engagement known as the "Conflicts Code". Still, to some the Code is not restrictive enough, and there is talk of a pressing all heroes under one all-encompassing Authority. The stage may be crowded, but your spot light will shine all the brighter for it.
[ ] The Iron Age: After the true nature of the Authority was revealed, there was a widespread disillusionment with heroism as a whole, leading to a new era of vigilantism. In this age of grim darkness, heroes and villains race each other to the bottom to be the lowest examples of humanity as society starts to crumble. This a dark and grim time, but you will bring some hope to it even if you have to claw it out of Fate's hands yourself.
