The government may be evil, their machines may be deadly, but you have power as well. More than that, you have something worth fighting for.
First Transformation

Inkbones

No Glory Save Honor
Location
Where you can still smell the sky
A long time ago, more than sixty years before you were born, there was a horrible war. The weapons used were so evil they tainted the world itself, so much so that a new form of life was spawned. These were the Tribulations, and they were giant and hateful and destroyed everything and anyone in their path.

But there is more than one type of monster, for some are made instead of born.

And so our glorious nation, the Commonwealth, built the Talos, our mighty metal gods, to match the Tribulations in strength and destruction.

Entire generations were born into this conflict. Your parents told you stories about them, how it became normal to hide in bunkers deep beneath the surface, how it felt when titans battled overhead.

But evil, even grotesquely large evils, must eventually fall. There has not been a Tribulation sighted since the year you were born. Victory was declared over the monsters, and for a time there was peace.

"What a waste." Thought our leaders. "So much time, so many lives, so much money, went into building the Talos. But now that we are victorious, what use is there for them? It would be so irresponsible to simply decommission them. Surely, we could still put them to constructive use?"

Ours was not the only nation to be hurt by the Tribulations, although our Talos had protected us against the worst of the damage. So of course, it was our responsibility to help them. There were those who did not want out help, who protested rather violently, and after the Talos killed them the rest became much more compliant.

The sun no longer sets on the Commonwealth. There are some nations still fighting, but there is not much they can do to stop it. Perhaps soon, the entire world will become the Commonwealth.

Rebellions tend not to last long against steel giants.

But even here in the Capital we are not safe, say our leaders. Even here, evil people conspire to threaten the peace and prosperity of our great nation.

People like your parents.

What crime do your parents commit against the state by nature of existing?

[ ] Foreigners|
Your parents were not born here(although you were). They came here from another country and had the gall to take away jobs and welfare from real citizens.

[ ] Radicals| Your parents were there to protest the foreign conquests, the revocations of liberties, the prison camps. If not for fear of your safety, they would be protesting still.

[ ] Queer| They dared to violate the sacred and traditional roles of marriage, back when such things were legal.

[ ] Traitors| They willingly harbored the persecuted in our home and helped ferry them to safety.

[ ] Heretics| You are practitioners of a religion that is not accepted by the state's cult.

[ ] Parasites| One your parents has a disability and therefore exists only to siphon resources from productive members of society.

[ ] Write-In| These are not mutually exclusive. Combine as many as you want, or come up with something new.

You have lived your childhood knowing that, at any time, agents in black suits could show up and disappear all of you, or worse, take them away and leave you behind.

It can be somewhat emotionally disturbing for a child to grow up with the knowledge that you cannot protect the ones you love.

After all, what can you do against the Commonwealth? How can one child stand against an army of machines?

How could you save the world, if you can't save your parents?

That's what you thought, until the night you got your powers.

How old were you, that day?

[ ] High School Freshman|
Back when you were just beginning to realize how broken the world was, and how little you could do to stop it. Or so you thought.

[ ] College Freshman| Sleepwalking through life, trying and failing not to sink into despair, looking for a reason to hope. Luckily, one found you.

[ ] College Graduate| Stuck in a dead-end job, unable to find anything more than menial employment, still living with your parents as much for their sake as for yours. You had consigned yourself to a life of bare survival, but the universe had other plans.

That night, the darkest night of your life, when your thoughts had strayed to their darkest conclusion yet, you stumbled onto something in equal parts wonderful and terrifying.

What is the source of your power?

[ ] Technology|
You found a seemingly broken piece of government tech in a junkyard that bonded to your skin when you foolishly touched it.

[ ] Aliens| A visitor from another wold decided to lend you the use of its advanced weapons and technology.

[ ] Magic| You discovered that you were able to tap into and manipulate the natural energies of the cosmos.

[ ] Eldritch| You made a pact with an incomprehensible being outside of reality. You still don't know what they got out of the arrangement.

[ ] Kaiju| The same entity that created the Tribulations granted you a measure of their power in the hopes that you would succeed where they did not.

[ ] Write-in

For the first time in your life, you were given true power, the power to create change, making you:

[ ] A magical girl

[ ] A magical boy

[ ] A magical kid

[ ] Write-in you own magical gender

In addition, you received three gifts to aid you in your new quest.

Your Armor, which will both protect you and influence how your power effects the world:

[ ] A glamorous ball gown

[ ] A spiffy suit & tie

[ ] Literal shining armor.

[ ] Flowing robes

[ ] Chain mail, with cape and tiara

[ ] Mysterious cloak

[ ] A futuristic uniform

[ ] You'll go without|
This will make you more powerful right from the start, but significantly easier to kill.

[ ] Write-in

Your Familiar, who will guide and aid you through magic and life:

[ ] A traditional smarmy black cat

[ ] A brash armored mouse

[ ] A reserved and mournful raven

[ ] An excitable ball of light

[ ] A gruffly scarred sheepdog

[ ] A small and irate dragon

[ ] An adorably affectionate spider

[ ] You'll go without|
This will make you more powerful right from the start, but you'll have no idea what you're doing.

[ ] Write-in

Your Implement, the tool you use to direct and concentrate your energy:

[ ] A delicately engraved wand

[ ] A staff engraved with a complex series of runes

[ ] A set of old-fashioned pistols

[ ] A seemingly normal broomstick

[ ] A very large sword

[ ] A fancy rapier

[ ] A mystical tome

[ ] A gemstone the size of your fist

[ ] You'll go without|
This will make you more powerful right from the start, but you'll have great difficulty with control and precision.

[ ] Write-in

The world you live in is cruel and broken, but now more than ever you can do something about it.

No one is going to hurt the people you love anymore.

They'll have to go through you, first.

I have not watched any anime. The closest thing to a mecha show I've seen was Pacific Rim, and the closest I've seen to a magical girl one is the new She-Ra. The rest I know comes from general cultural osmosis.

So, please take everything with a grain of salt and a mound of patience.

Also, this intro got a lot darker than I was planning. I guess recent events might have inspired me. I want this to be fun, first and foremost, and hopefully not depressing. I suppose using magic powers to fight back against fascist regimes might not be fun for everyone.

Plan format, please.

[X] Plan Tech Heresy

Frankly someone needs to vote for a plan, and Well none of the plans come nearly close to what I'd choose. However, The only Thing I'd willingly lose is the familiar, and I'd prefer they actually had a gender. Thus, this is the only choice I could make of the available plans.

Edit: [] Plan For Listing my preferred choices.
-[] Traitors
-[] College Freshman
-[] Eldritch
-[] A magical girl
-[] A futuristic uniform
-[] An adorably affectionate spider
-[] A gemstone the size of your fist

Now Let Me Go Through A Checklist as it were

So Yes, I am indeed most partial to Revenge of The Pantheon of The Other available plans. However, I simply want an instrument. Because I think control and precision is vital in powers.

That's fair, but my idea behind it was the Deities of the characters's parents religion are channeling their power through the character. They aren't all that invested in the current world, so they have little regard for collateral damage and would prefer over-the-top power to better spread the idea of their power and influence.

I respect your plan as it is. I simply wanted to explain my thoughts on the plans overall, and why I preferred Power Without Guidance over any of the other plans despite the fact that you more align in actual values to my ideal plan. As I simply can't willingly lose finesse due to it's many variable uses. Stealth is an obvious point, but not the only one as small uses of power likely use less power as well.

An Advisor is temporary, it can be useful in the beginning helping you learn what's happening, and I'd prefer one rather then not, but it's the only one I'd actually willingly lose of the 3.

That being said you don't even have half of the things I'd want on a plan, so really it's not perfect. It's simply the closest with a single hang up.

So I generally scrounge through my pic collection and see if anything jumps out at me for inspiration. Preferably something without too much character attached, but... *Shrug*

Anyway, I'm eh on posting pics with the new policy going into effect, but I was looking at Glorybringer Djeeta (yes, the plan name is a bit of a pun) and Tama from Wixoss as the Familiar. The latter's fully blinged out, giant lance, wings, and big halo form specifically.

I'm not too sure what I want to do for the Familiar or the weapon really though. I think the rapier since it strikes me as having a bit more precision rather than brute force, but I'm not sure if I'd prefer power or guidence right now.

Also the source of our powers. Multiple? It seems like multiple could be a thing, not sure though.

I was looking at Fie from Trails of Cold Steel as well as someone who jumped out at me, but she definitely fits into either a magic user or mundane rebel rather than a magical girl as is.

If anyone feels like they might like the idea and wants to contribute/hash it out or something, good. If not I probably won't be finishing this.

Because I'm fine with both tech heresy and The Hopeless Bringer of Hope.

I was hoping for a bit of discussion on it, but eh.

Also even more paranoia than normal with our parents, can't forget about that.

Actually, what I'm really not sure about is the age. It doesn't feel very magical girl-y if we're already in college, but at the same time peak hopelessness is college graduate.

And Freshman sounds more hopeful than highschooler tbh. The latter is having their world crumble to pieces around them, freshman has already had this happen and is pushing on to find something to grab onto.

Does anyone have a comment on this one either way? I might switch to graduate I think.

The parents are the selling points to me.
I can relate to the idea that a proactive 'is a parasite' would look for opportunities to gain some sense of self worth, even if that would involves 'some' amount of activism. The other paths are either closing your eyes or telling yourself 'I am a parasite'. the second might also trigger a 'my death wouldn't matter that much, but I can save someone else' reaction.
Anyone sane will be horrified with such a mental model of the world. And even the playing as the child of a character that I can relate to is in such a way is exiting to me.

In that sense both freshman options me more than graduate, because they allow for regular interactions with the parents. To me magical girl genre has always stood out among other super-hero genres, because of the realization that the world is meaner than you thought it was, and the fantasy that you could helping by shooting lasers at the problem will actually solve something.

I just realize that I pushed my own ideas too much in that comment, maybe I should just write my own story.
Not really? I was asking for discussion and I agree with the point. Magical Girl stories are, almost all of the time, some kind of coming of age story. Having the person be older is definitely possible, but it... hmm... It becomes something a little bit different.

Not bad I mean. Just that thematically it shifts into something else.

I will admit to being a bit divided still. MG stories feel like they should have that floundering fish/coming of age feeling, but when it leans onto that other aspect and does it well it can get very interesting.

And with the way this society and the themes of the story are it might be a good one for it honestly. Hmm...

Those words make me want to dig up some project folder.

But I think for this story it will have more net suffering in it if we were a child, because this will be more traumatic if we weren't a semi adult:

Net suffering is important for magical girls, but here specifically it seems to be about Hope. Both in the story and my vote.

Hope and Friendship are usually what get a magical girl and/or the community around them through the Suffering.

Net Suffering is kind of like a tester for the character stuff that is the Hope/Determination/Courage/etc a character has. Normally I would focus on causing the former to see how much the latter could take, but here its kind of about having as little of the latter as possible while seeing how long she could keep inspiring everyone else and, eventually perhaps, herself.

You know what you have actually convinced me.
A story about a hopeless girl becoming a woman caught in the mental constructs meant to keep her alive, and then slowly realizing 'I am a adult now I actually help people now, even if it is just in small ways.' Would be a cool magical girl story.
