Hey guys, I'm new to this forum but I had a story idea that I decided to explore and write, and I decided to post it for (hopefully) your enjoyment! I used a combination of rules from the General CYOA thread, (from SB) specifically the Guardian CYOA and the Choose One B CYOA. I fudged one of the rules a little just because I wanted it to work differently for the story line sake.

I'll go ahead and post my build first.

Combo CYOA (Guardian + Choose one B)

Magic: Magic 6 (30 pts)
Similarity: Just like Humans (14 pts)

Abilities:
  • Shrink (10pts)

I would really appreciate any input (positive or constructive) all of you have, and I plan on continuing this story. Please let me know if there is any custom or rule I may have broken; I read all of the rules I could find, but I may have missed something. I promise to rectify it immediately! Thanks everyone!

The Old and New

A Guardian/Choose One B CYOA

Chapter 1: Some Dude

I was a normal guy once. I had a car, a job, and a wife. We rented a small one bedroom house, in a small but old neighborhood, in a small college town in Louisiana. I had good friends, and a mostly fun life. I wasn't anything super special, I mean I read a lot, but the only thing that made me stand out from most of my friends was an overwhelming desire to make things better, and even then it didn't make me stand out by very much.

Well all of that changed; all of it in a blink of an eye. One second I was talking to my beautiful wife about some repairs that needed to be made on our car, and next I was towering over 20 small people dressed in animal skins in what looked like plains from the midwest. "Where am I?!" I screamed, and almost as if my voice was too loud, all of the strange people dressed in animal skins fell to the ground in fear.

"What?! Why are y'all so small?" I bellowed, really not grasping how terrifying I must have looked to those poor people.

"Where is my wife?! Where is my house?! What is going on?!" I continued at the top of my lungs, turning around and realizing it wasn't the people who were small, it was me that was huge!

That's when one of the people lifted his face from the ground and called to me, "Oh great Guardian of The Plainsmen Tribe, we've called you to protect us from the dangers of this world. We are a small, but hard working people, and we have been driven almost to extinction by the Enemy. So we called to the Great Spirit of the Cosmos for a great and powerful protector! And our prayers were answered! He sent you! Our Guardian!"

"What?! Are you nuts?! I'm not great or powerful! I'm just some dude from South Louisiana!" I screamed at them, still not getting that my increased size had also increased the power of my voice.

"All hail Some Dude from South Louisiana!" the people chanted.

"Uhh what…?" I said finally noticing that my screaming was a bit much.

"Some Dude, we need you to protect us, Okeus is making his move on the land. We have nowhere else to run! Lord Some Dude, please protect our people." he begged.

"Why are you calling me Some Dude? Do you think that's my name?" I asked.

"Oh! Forgive me my Lord! I thought you said you were Some Dude from the mystical lands of South Louisiana! Please do not be angered at your people for such a rude presumption!" he begged.

"Woah dude, be cool, and trust me South Louisiana isn't mystical." I laughed, "However, I think you guys may have summoned the wrong person. I'm not powerful or anything, and I doubt if it came to a fight I could protect you from anything that has been wiping your people out, I'm sorry." I continued.

The group of people around me moaned in horror. They all had a look of intense despair that I've never seen before. These were a broken people, who had nowhere else to go, and no one else to turn to. And unfortunately for them I was the last hope? I really had no idea what to do.

Suddenly the women in the group let out an ear shattering shriek as they pointed in the distance to what looked like a giant shadowy wolf. "Akanui!!!" they all cried.

"What the crap is that!" I screamed.

The wolf was at least twice my size, and I was at least 10 times the size of the people. I had no idea how they had survived this long against such massive creature!

"You've been running from this?! That thing is massive!" I screamed, as I looked at its gigantic maw, and the eerie dark emanations wisping from its jet black hide. "This is what you called me to fight?!" I asked frightened to my core.

"Please Guardian, you are our only hope! We can no longer outrun that beast!" The tribesmen speaker said.

This was nuts, I knew I didn't stand a chance against that thing, but I couldn't just let these people die. I had never wished for normal so bad in my entire life. Every daydream I've ever had about being transported to a strange world instantly became a regret. I missed my wife, my house, the comfort of knowing what will probably happen tomorrow, but that was all gone. Everything I had loved, everything I had known was gone, except for one thing. My desire to make things better remained, and it was screaming in my heart that these people needed my help. Even if it was to sacrifice myself to let them escape, they needed my help.

"Run! I'll try to hold him off as long as I can. Get out of here though!" I ordered, but the tribesmen and women didn't even wait for me to finish. They bolted away over a small hill.

"Well that didn't take much convincing...:" I muttered.

The wolf was much closer now and I could see this was not a fight I could win with just pure strength, but I didn't have very many options. So I clenched my fist and went running at the shadow behemoth. That's when my hands began to glow, and I felt an intense energy inside me just begging to be released. So I pointed my hands at the wolf and willed the energy out of me, and just like that! Wham a powerful energy blast flew from both my hands whopped that shadow wolf straight in the face causing him to crumple mid charge!

"You know! That would have been useful to mention!" I screamed at the people as they fled.

The wolf got up from his crash and roared ominously at me. "Ah I see the traitors called their own Guardian. That's okay, Lord Okeus commanded me to devour those wretches, but I'll start with you!" He roared.

"Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap! There's monsters coming out of his fur!" I screamed as demonic spirit things came oozing out of the darkness surrounding him.

"I am Akanui! The Sun Eater! I'll devour you and please Lord Okeus!" He roared

"Yeah well I'm Rob, Some Dude from South Louisiana! and I have no idea what you're talking about!!" I screamed back as I charged up another energy blast.

The dark spirits flew at me with incredible speed, but for some reason I was able to track them all, and I willed the energy within me to strike all of them, and just like that the energy blasts charging in my hands burst into tiny energy fragments that homed in on each dark spirit taking them out with a flash. I didn't wait for Akanui to follow up, and immediately launched another energy blasts at him. As the blasts him and knocked him down, I imagined the energy within me becoming a penetrating beam that would expand from within, and suddenly a powerful and sharp beam of energy penetrated the wolf's body. He let out a intense sound like a combination of a roar and a moan, and looked at me with intense hatred. He looked as if he were going to charge me, but then the angry face became a face of confusion, and then a face of horror as I willed the energy I shot within him to explode. All of a sudden the shadowy wolf erupted into chunks of flesh and darkness. As soon as a piece of him hit the ground it evaporated into a shadowy mist that gathered together until they coalesced into one incorporeal bubble, and an ominous voice came from it.

"You have bested me Guardian, but the powers of my master are vast and intense. I will return, and when I do, I will bring you terror and destruction. This encounter will not be forgotten! Farewell Rob, Some Dude from South Louisiana! I will return with vengeance!" he ominously roared as the incorporeal ball flew away from me.

"Do none of you know what Dude means?!" I yelled back.

Chapter 2: Deal

It took me a while to catch up to the tribe; well, because it turns out after running from Akanui for so long, they developed an unnatural ability to run really fast. I knew I could sense their direction, but for all I knew they were running at full speed still. I needed something that would get me to them quicker. So I focused on that energy I felt inside me, and instead of willing it out of my body, I willed it to stay inside me but rise up, and suddenly I was rising in the air.

"Holy crap! I'm flying! Well I'm floating, that's kind of not the same thing. I wonder if I can will it forward and backwards?" I thought to myself as I willed it forward and slowly began to float forward.

"Heh, that's pretty cool. I wonder how fast I can will it forward?" I continued as I pushed the energy forward harder. Suddenly I was zooming really fast in the direction of the tribe. Probably a bit too fast as I began getting extremely dizzy. It wasn't until I spun out of control that I realized I just needed to not push so hard.

"No! No! No! NO!" I screamed as I slammed into a hill the tribe was hiding behind. Fortunately as I slammed into the hill I was able to instinctively heal myself with the inner energy.

"Guardian! Are you okay! Is the Akanui following you?!" the lead tribesman asked.

"Ahh, that did not feel good! Shouldn't there be some sort of manual for these powers?" I asked as my flesh and bones knit back together where it was damaged.

"A manual?" the tribesman asked.

"Ah forget it. So can you explain a bit more of why I'm here, why I have powers now, and who Akanui and Okeus are?" I asked as I crawled out of the cave I just created with my face.

"Well first Guardian, what should we call you? Since Some Dude isn't your name." the tribesman asked.

"Uhh well my name is Robert, but you can call me Rob, and remind me later to explain what the word dude is" I sighed, "What's your name?" I asked.

"I am chief Wakune; I am your humble servant, advisor, and leader of the Plainsmen Tribe, and to answer your question you are here because there is a massive power struggle in our world. Tribes have been summoning guardians to protect them and help them prosper for centuries, but recently one of the guardians became power hungry, and instead of leading and protecting his people, he became a tyrant. He began conquering other tribes, slaying their guardian or forcing their guardian to serve him. He became stronger with every tribe he conquered, and we are one of the last tribes to remain free of his grasp." Wakune said.

"So I guess Akanui is one of the Guardians under Okeus' control?" I asked.

"Yes, he was one of the first Guardians to join Okeus, and he is one of Okeus' strongest generals." Wakune answered.

"Really, then why did I beat him so easily?" I asked.

"Well because you are a full Guardian, with a small, but devoted group of followers to protect. That gives you power, and the better we do and more we grow as a tribe, the more powerful you will get. Akanui is a servant now. His tribe grants him only a fraction of the power he had as a full guardian, the rest goes to making Okeus more powerful." Wakune replied.

"Okay, so I'm from another world. Are all Guardians from my world?" I asked.

"You are from the Heavenly Abode, are you not?" Wakune asked.

"Umm no, I am from Earth. What's the Heavenly Abode?" I asked.

"It's where the souls of the departed go to be with the Great Spirit. Every Guardian has been from there, with memories of their former life, and an understanding of their gifts. Something must have gone wrong with the Summoning!" Wakune cried.

"I'll say! I am no one's ancestor, and I haven't died! I'm just a guy from Louisiana, and you accidentally pulled me into your world, made me grow 10 times my size, and gave me powers?!" I exclaimed.

"Well something must have gone wrong! Our ancestors and departed must not have wanted to return to protect us. Even they have abandoned us. So you must have been pulled by the Summoning into our world!" Wakune replied.

"That's messed up! It's not like I volunteered for this!" I barked.

"I'm sorry Lord Robert, it was not my intention to call you here, but we needed protection. You are our only hope. You must lead us." he replied.

"Don't call me that. Rob is just fine, and newsflash! I don't know anything about your world! How can I lead you if I don't know anything about you or the surroundings?!" I replied.

"We will work together, your power with our will to survive. Lord Rob, you are our Guardian, and you are our savior." He answered.

"Okay, drop the Lord. It's creepy, just call me Rob. Also lets ease off of the savior talk and stuff. No wonder Okeus got such a big head if people kept talking to him like that. I'll help you, Wakune, but know this. I want to go home. Sure this having powers thing is awesome, and I love the opportunity to help people, but I left my wife in my world. I can't just abandon her. So I'll help you against Okeus, if you help me get back home. Deal?" I asked.

"You have a deal, Rob." Wakune replied.

We talked some more, and he explained the geography of the area. For the most part the area we were in was mostly plains with a river passing straight through it southward. To the north and east was a massive mountain range that separated the plains from Okeus' domain. There was a massive a forest to the west, and the sea was to the south. The Tribesman had lost all of their supplies while running from Akanui. So I went hunting, and as you would expect hunting with the ability to fly and homing energy blasts was not very difficult. Neither was carrying my prey back because, well, I'm 10 times the size of a normal human, that kind of makes you stronger.

After the tribe skinned, cooked, and ate the three buffalo I brought to them, Wakune and I sat down for another talk.

"Okay we need a plan. Okeus is probably not going to ignore you, especially now that he knows there is another potential pet for him to have. So we need to find a place to hide and build." I said.

"Agreed. The Plains are to open, and despite our attachment to our homeland, we'd rather survive than die here." he replied.

"So question is, mountains or forest?" I said.

"Forest. The Mountains are Okeus' domain. Even if we found one he didn't control, he and his minions have no problem navigating mountains. They probably won't have trouble with a forest either, but it's the lesser of two bad options." he answered.

"Okay forest it is." I said as I stood up.

"Where are you going, lord?" asked Wakune.

I immediately shot him a look that seemed to clearly communicate my annoyance at being called lord. "Wakune! Stop calling me that for Pete's sake!" I replied.

"Pete?" he asked.

"Uhh, right. Don't worry about it. Just don't call me lord! Got it!" I responded

"Yes sir," he replied.

"Gah…" I signed, gather the people around me. I want to try something." I said.

As they gathered around me, I tried to project the energy within around them. It was difficult at first, because, one I didn't want to accidentally turn them into people chunks, two I needed to keep the energy connected to me while encompassing them. It took a few tries, but eventually I got it, and I began to levitate them and myself.

"Well that's useful!" I hooped as the people screamed in surprise.

"Be cool people, dang." I muttered, "We're going to fly to the forest." I said.

"Uhh sir," Wakune said, " Didn't you crash into a hill?"

"Yep, but I got a little more practice while hunting." I said with a wicked grin, after all, just because I'm their guardian doesn't mean I can't have fun..
