Rocking the life
You wake up in your bed, blinking vestiges of sleep out of your eyes. You'd had a long night playing videogames with your friends, and you'd heard several people expressing that they might like to live for real in one of those games. You can't remember if you were one of them or not, but it doesn't take a major leap of logic to deduce that the screen hanging in front of your face is somehow related to that.

Welcome to the Game!
Please state your name, your age, and the current date.

You remember your name, of course. It's:

[ ] Sophia Hess (Shadow Stalker).
[ ] Emma Barnes.
[ ] Madison Clements.
[ ] Greg Veder.
[ ] Charlotte Adamson.
[ ] Brian Laborn (Grue).
[ ] Lisa Wilborne (Tattletale).
[ ] Alec Paysan (Regent).
[ ] Rachel Lindt (Bitch).
[ ] Aisha Laborn (Imp, pre-trigger).
[ ] Trevor Medina (Chariot, pre-trigger).
[ ] Francis Krouse (Trickster).
[ ] Marissa Newland (Sundancer).
[ ] Luke Cassues (Ballistic).
[ ] Jess Alexanders (Genesis).
[ ] Cody Jacobson (Perdition).
[ ] Oliver Torthuil (the guy who got the other half of Noelle's vial).
[ ] Rory Christner (Triumph).
[ ] Carlos Montero (Aegis).
[ ] Dennis Walsh (Clockblocker).
[ ] Dean Stansfield (Gallant).
[ ] Chris Thompson (Kid Win).
[ ] Missy Biron (Vista).
[ ] John Cameron (Browbeat).
[ ] Victoria Dallon (Glory Girl).
[ ] Amy Dallon (Panacea).
[ ] Crystal Pelham (Laserdream).
[ ] Eric Pelham (Shielder).
[ ] Cassie Herren (Rune).
[ ] Dinah Alcott.
[ ] Sabah Safar (Parian).

You have to look at the calender to remember what day it is. You note that today is:

[ ] January 3rd, 2011. (The day of Taylor's trigger. Browbeat and Dinah have not yet triggered, and the Travelers are in Boston.)
[ ] April 8th, 2011. (The start of canon. If a Winslow student does not win the character selection (and Aisha just turned 14, so she's not a Winslow student), the date vote will be redone through poll.)
[ ] April 11th, 2011. (Taylor's fight with Lung. This choice will involve you being unable to sleep, heading out, and stumbling across the fight.)
[ ] April 14th, 2011. (The bank robbery.)
[ ] April 15th, 2011. (Bakuda's bombing spree begins. Coil recruits the Travelers.)

A/N: I started this quest because I wanted to write a Worm/Gamer fic and noticed that there were far too few fics not focused on Taylor out there. She will be appearing, but whether or not she ends up in a prominent role depends on your choices. I intend to take this quest as far as I can. I freely admit to making up Alec's new last name and the surnames of Jess, Oliver, Cody, Chris, Sabah, Carlos, Dennis, and Charlotte, along with stealing Rune's name from Cerulean's fics and making up my own name for Browbeat. I have interesting plans for whoever you intend to pick, especially if it is one of the Trio.

Waking Up
You are Dennis Walsh, also known as Clockblocker of the Wards East-North-East. You are starting to wonder if this is a dream or not, given how similar it is to what you were talking about last night. After you entered your name and today's date (January 3rd, 2011), focusing intently on the calendar gave you a message.

Brockton Bay Protectorate/Wards 2011 Calendar
A way to keep track of dates, with a picture of one Ward or Protectorate member for each month (except for July, which has Assault and Battery paired).

And, of course, the other message that popped up at the same time.

Your skill in Observe has increased by 1!

Confusing, but you have time to think about it later. Even if this isn't a dream, Arcadia doesn't start until next week. Sophia is going to be so pissed that she's the only one of the Wards going to school this week. So you can just stick around and play with whatever game abilities this gave you.

You don't seem to be able to pull up a minimap or a questlog, but you can view your character sheet.

Dennis Walsh
Level 20 Hero
STR: 10
AGI: 20
VIT: 13
INT: 16
WIS: 4
CHA: 12
LUK: 15

Skills:
Clockblock MAX
Gamer's Body MAX
Gamer's Mind MAX
Observe 1

Not too surprising. Your increased level is probably a function of how much XP you've already gained in the wards. You are curious as to what those skills do, however.

Turns out Clockblock is your parahuman power, Gamer's Body gives you a HP total, and Gamer's Mind keeps you as calm and focused as videogame characters always seem to be.

That still leaves the question of what genre of game your dream threw you into.

Then your stomach growls. Apparently, videogame characters still need to eat. Also, if this is a dream, it's unlike any dream you've ever had so far. You can't remember ever being hungry in a dream before.

You get downstairs and make yourself a bowl of cereal. You've just about finished it when your phone rings. And it's your PRT phone.

You answer the call. "Hello?"

"Hey, Dennis," Rory--Triumph, you mentally correct yourself, he's probably in costume--replies. "Shadow Stalker's probation officer tried calling her at 8:07 this morning, but Stalker wasn't answering her phone. I know you're off-duty at the moment, but can you please head over and tell Sophia that she's supposed to answer her phone no matter what else she's doing? Especially since Winslow's classes hadn't even started yet."

You mentally shake your head. Congratulations, Sophia. There goes an hour of my life dealing with you that I'll never get back.

Then you realize something. Another box has appeared in front of you.

Quest: Upbraid the Renegade
Sophia Hess reminded to check her calls: 0/1
Reward: 50 XP
Accept: Y/N?

Options:
[ ] Go to Winslow and track down Sophia yourself.
[ ] Call Sophia and see if she's answering her phone now.
[ ] Tell Rory to find somebody else. Like he said, you're not on-duty at the moment. (Refuse quest.)

A/N: Sorry for the delay, but I wanted to make extra-sure how I was doing this would make sense to people. I decided to go with the theory that all the Wards who were there when Shadow Stalker joined knew about her probation so that they could report if she violated it on patrol.

To Winslow
You consider calling Sophia right now, but dismiss the thought. Rory would only be calling you if he hadn't been able to reach her himself. You instead get your keys and head down to the car. You count yourself lucky you'd finally gotten your license last month, otherwise you'd have to wake up your mom and have her drive you.

You get into the car and head out with little difficulty. As you swerve to dodge a car that ran a red light, another box pops up like the one that appeared when Rory called you.

Your skill in Driving has increased by 1!

Apparently driving counts as a skill in this dream. Good to know.

You make it to Winslow without any further trouble. You park your car
[ ][Park] a block away and walk down--you've heard the stories Sophia tells about how nasty the gangs can get, and you don't particularly want the car your parents got you for your birthday to get vandalized by gangsters.
[ ][Park] in the Winslow parking lot--the gangsters should all be in class right now, so you shouldn't run into any trouble.

You walk into Winslow. When the security guard at the door asks what you're doing, you tell him you're bringing a message to Sophia from her social worker. Unfortunately, the intercoms are broken, so you're going to have to go right to Sophia's classroom to deliver the message. Her classroom is on the third floor, and there are three staircases nearby that could get you up there. Which one do you want to take?

[ ] The staircase down the left hall.
[ ] The staircase down the center hall.
[ ] The staircase down the right hall.

A/N: I'm still figuring out the exact specifics of what exactly is going to happen, but I will say that one of these options gives you a chance to rescue Taylor before she triggers, one will result in you being able to find Taylor before Sophia but only after her trigger, and one means Sophia's going to be present when you get the clue that Taylor's still trapped in the locker. I'm not going to say which one, though.
Also, this would have been a lot easier to write if a different date or a Winslow student had won the character selection vote. Just saying.

The Smell
A/N: Right won with 6 votes, to left's 3 and center's 2. Also, we didn't park at Winslow.

You take the staircase down the right hall. There's not much down this section--the classrooms in this area don't look like they've been used in years. God, Winslow is a shithole compared to Arcadia, you think. When are they ever going to clean this place up?

You make it to the 3rd floor without incident before a strange scent hits your nostrils. It reminds you slightly of the scent of blood that you've smelled too often on people who got knifed by gangsters during your patrols. At the same time, you hear a slight banging noise and a faint voice from somewhere up ahead.. Another box shows up, blocking your vision.

Investigate the Disturbance
Those sounds and that smell are clearly not natural. You should probably fulfill your civic duty as a Ward and investigate.
Disturbance investigated: 0/1
Rewards: 2000 XP, increased reputation with ???, decreased reputation with ???

[ ] Accept the quest and investigate immediately. Whatever's going on, you need to know so you can deal with it.
[ ] Accept the quest, but find Sophia first. Two heads are better than one.
[ ] Report whatever's going on to the school once you're done talking to Sophia. (Refuse quest.)
