The March of Remembrance: A TL-191 Game.

The 1860 US Presidential Elections, marked a turn in the politics of North America. In what many now regard as the elections that lead indirectly to the split of the Union. The Republican Party, lead by Abraham Lincoln, supported the banning of slavery in all the states of the US, which the southern states saw as a violation of their constituional rights and as a part of a plan to eventual abolish slavery. As the results came in, Lincoln was proclaimed President of the United States, seven slave states decided to bound together and from a confederacy. The first six states to secede had the highest slave population in the Union and had in its majority voted for John Bell. The remaining eight slave states still rejected calls for secession, which both the incumbent President James Buchanan and the incoming President Abraham Lincoln considered as illegal. The Confederates quickly occupied various federal forts in Confederate forts. The Confederacy begun hostilities by firing on Fort Sumter on April 12th, 1861.
The Firing of Fort Sumter
The war was going very favorable towards the Confederacy at first on the Eastern front, despite losing on the western front to the Union. On September 10th, 1862, near Antietam while getting ready for engaging the Union troops, a Confederate messager boy who was delievering General Lee's orders for the Battle lost the plans. Luckily enough a trailing Confederate soldier managed to find the orders. In Maryland thus the Union General McClellan is caught by suprise which leads the Army of Northern Virginia lead by Robert E. Lee to achieve victory. Afterwards, Lee manages to sucessfully defeat and crushes the Union in the Battles of Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania and destroys the Army of the Potomac in the Battle of Camp Hill on October 1st. Lee goes on to capture the city of Philadelphia, which earns the Confederacy recognition from the United Kingdom and France thus winning the War of Southern independence and the United States.

After the Civil War:
The State of Kentucky, which was conquered by the Confederate States shortly after the Battle of Camp Hill, joined the original 11 confederate states after the war's conclusion in addition to the Indian Territory. As for the United States with the end of the war and the failure to keep the Southern States in, Linclon lost the Presidential Election. With its finances being completely drawn, the USA would refuse to buy the Alyaskan Territory from the Russians. In the meantime the Confederacy would "buy" Cuba from Spain after the Cuban Plantation owners with support from the Richmond Government expelled the Spanish and welcomed the Confederates in, with Spain being forced to sell the island after massive pressure from London.

The Second Mexican War:
Leading up to the Second Mexican War, there was growing discountent towards the US Government as the suceeding Democrat Presidents kept pursuing a policy of appeasement towards the Confederacy. This all came to an head when in 1879, President Samuel J. Tilden went ahead and removed the 12 stars from the Union flag which symbolized, the 12 now Confederate States. The Electorate would respond in a big way when the 1880 US Presidential Elections happened and for the first time since the War of Secession (as called by the Yankees), a Republican would be elected to the White House in the form of Senator James G. Blaine from Maine.

Blaine a very hardline Anti-Confederate was immediatly put to the test as rightfully short after his inaguration, the Confederate States under President James Longstreet would go ahead with the purchase of the Mexican States of Sonora and Chihuaha from Emperor Maximillian I of Mexico (which was by all intents and purposes ruler of a very weak Mexico, backed by French arms.) for 3 Million Confederate Dollars.
Using said purchase as pretext the United States would immediatly declare war on the Confederacy and the Empire of Mexico, starting what many call as the Second Mexican War. The war which would last less than a year saw fighting all over North America as the British plus there subject the Dominion of Canada and the recently proclaimed Third French Republic rushed to the aid of the CSA and Mexico following a daring assault by the US towards the Indian Territory under Colonel George Armstrong Custer which saw dozens of Kiowa Warriors killed, making the USA to the eyes of the world as the key aggressor.
George Custer - Together with Teddy Roosevelt, they would achieve the US only major victories in the Second Mexican War. Largely popular by this point.
In retaliation the CS and the Kiowa tribes would raid the state of Kansas while launching attacks towards Maryland, Kentucky and New Mexico (the later going very south for the Confederacy as they angered the local Apache). In addition, the Union would face a non-violent uprising from the Utah Territory as the Mormons unhappy with American failures to grant them statehood, staged an non-violent uprising under the leadership of John Taylor.
The Mormons - A continually source of trouble for the US, even today.
However aside from cutting telegraph lines and railroad lines, the Mormons didn't pursue a single aggressive move towards the Americans. However considering Salt Lake was a key center of the Transcontinental Railroad, it was vital to restore Unionist control over the State. That was easily achievable by Brigadier General John Pope who gathered as most Artillery pieces as he can and pointed towards them towards the Mormons, getting them to finally stop the rioting. However Pope's increasingly draconic measures, have made quite an impact on the Mormon population, leaving them increasingly hostile and unhappy with American control, something that still lasts to this day.
As campaign in Kentucky bogged down, the Confederacy and the Union started attempting to negotiate a potential peace treay. With the United States having lost in both the Virginia and New Mexico offensives and being blockaded by the British Royal Navy, CS President Longstreet gave very generous terms to the US. All he asked was Yankee recognition of the Mexican Purchases and a return to Status Quo Ante Bellum. However US President Blaine refused the terms (something that nowadays is considered the nail in the coffin for both his Presidency and the Republican Party).

As the war continued, a new front would be opened up north by the British and the Canadians would begin two offensives into the US State of Maine (Blaine's own home state, which border with New Brunswick had always been a point of contention between the Americans and British) and the Montana Territory. The Maine Offensive was a sucess as the Anglo-Canadian forces took the Northern half of the State capturing the Upper St. John's and Arostook River Valleys (which were ceded to Canada after the war).
However the Montana front was a resounding victory for the US, mostly thanks to the actions of two men, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and Brigadier Colonel Georger Custer, whose new invention the Gatling Gun really turned what many expected a Canadian victory into a soundly victory for the Americans who forced the Canadians back to the other side until the second ceasefire and the end of the war late in 1882.

The End of the Mexican War and the split of the Republican Party
As the war dragged on however the United States' ability to fight dwindled and whitin Blaine's own Republican party, cracks were beginning to show. Former US President Abraham Lincoln had after losing the Presidency spent most of his free time reading and writing new political theory, eventually coming across the work of a prominent German Philospher named Karl Marx. This would lead to a major split whitin the Republicans as Lincoln would form a new Party, the Socialist Party of America, fusing Marxist and some of the more Liberal policies of the Republicans (many took to call it Marxisim-Lincolnism or Social Democracy).
Yes, he is back and more Socialist it seems.
Peace talks would resume between both sides, however as Confederate Ambassador John Hay was getting ready to handle terms, General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson who had won the Battle of Kentucky, as well as having won the war of Indepedence gave US President Blaine an ultimatum, either they would accept Confederate terms in 48 hours or Washington and the entire State of Maryland would be invaded and annexed to the CSA. Facing incredible pressure by his own General Staff and Party, Blaine grudingly accepted the peace terms, which would see Canada annex Northern Maine and recognize Confederate acquisition of Sonora and Chihuahua.
As the war eneded, so too would the Republican Party collapse as not only would the Socialists form, but the Conservative faction of the Republicans under Benjamin Butler defected to the Democrats, helping them win the 1884 Presidential Election.
As 1885 dawns, the sentiment in the American Continent is that while the US was defeated twice, a sentiment of revenge and vengeance burns within the American population and there leaders.

Appeal: Should you find fault with an event and reasonably believe that the event should have turned out differently, because of certain historical, in game, etc. reasons you may submit an appeal to have an event altered.

Also, Spain would never have sold Cuba to any nation. I would suggest amending it so that the Cuban plantation elites demanded annexation to the CSA after abolitionist urges in mainland Spain and expelled all Spanish presence from the island while welcoming CSA forces. The "purchase" could have taken place symbolically later on.
