The Lie-Eating Dragon and the start of the Sneezy Quest

Ah...Aaaahh...AAAHHHH...
Location
Earth
========

Once upon a time lived a lonely man who was a very skilled liar.
He was the kind of man who could tell lies as easy as he breathed.
He lied so well and so often, that lies became a part of who he was.
And even though he told lies for others' sakes, his lies still hurt them.
He regretted this, and no matter how much time passed, his only wish...
Was to, somehow, make the lies that had hurt his loved ones disappear.

Uh-huh...and?

Hm?

What happens next?

Ah. He succeeds, more or less.

Wha-!? That's it? What happened to middle part of the story?

Well, the story isn't over, yet.

...Uh? Then...how does it end?

Hm? I don't know, of course.

Wha-!? You don't know?

I told you, the story isn't over yet. I couldn't know how it ends.

That's not a real story...come on, tell us another one!

Heh. Oh, bother…

========

And so begins Sneeze's third ill-advised attempt at writes. (don't worry i'll try to be less self-deprecating this time this is a HAPPY QUEST)

Unfortunately the cool idea isn't original. This is a LiEat quest, set after the good ending, following the whimsical adventures of the main characters: First, the liar, Theobald Leonhart, a con artist who travels to many towns, changing his face and name every time. Second, the lie-eating dragon, Efina, a young dragon that Theobald has taken care of ever since her egg mysteriously appeared in his bed.

"But Sneeze, I don't even know what LiEat is!" Worry not! Beyond what I've written above, you don't really have to know anything else to get the basic idea here, which is groucho-dad and dragon-daughteru travel around doing...stuff.

I'll explain anyways though: LiEat is a short series of story-driven indie RPGs by Miwashiba featuring some neat episodic storytelling, kawaii ass art style, really chill music and some memorable characters, not to mention the creative concept. All 3 games take about 4-5 hours to play in total, but they're well focused and it keeps the short playtime pretty packed with neat narrative.

Anyways, like, whatever, I'm not here to try and advertise LiEat (although it's only $3 on Steam and it'd be cool if more people played it).

So aside from all that, notes about how this'll be run:
-Mechanics: lol.
-Write-ins: Go for it unless I specifically say not to
-PC: Perspective will switch sometimes but generally, we're Efi
-If I post a vote tally, then the vote's locked unless it's a tie. In which case I'm probably posting the tally to demand a tiebreaker.
-Please ignore that this girl's name has a one letter difference from my other quest's protag

Also want to say that, this quest should (hopefully) run a bit differently from my others, if you're one of the five people who are familiar with my quests.

And that's about it. More posts incoming.

Characters

Part 1
Theobald Leonhart

*
Age:
23 years old
Height: 170cm / 5'7"
Hair color (natural): Light pinkish-orange
Eye color (natural): Green

Skills: Lying
Likes: Beer, money, women, Efi
Dislikes: Annoyances

Theo is a con artist who travels to many towns, constantly changing his name and appearance. He lies as easy as he breathes. Traditionally rough and insensitive, he's gotten a bit more gentle in the year he's cared for Efi. A bit.

*This is the closest image to what his real appearance is as an adult - typically his hair and eye colors will be altered to hide his identity.
Efina

Age: 11 months, almost one year! (Appears five years old)
Height: 98cm / 3'2", and still growing!
Hair color: Light pinkish-orange
Eye color: Blue

Skills: Eating lies, breathing fire
Likes: Sweets, Theo, playing
Dislikes: Two-digit addition

Efina is a young dragon who feeds on lies. Not the brightest, but inquisitive and energetic. Has a good handle on reading and writing, but math is still hard. She's started growing, slightly.
Iris Ashberry

Age: About 9 years old (Appears 15)
Height: 152cm / ~5'
Hair color: Blonde
Eye color: Blue

Skills: Analyzing
Likes: Her friends in the force
Dislikes: Thinking

A dragon girl who captains the police's Special Investigation Unit. Tends to say what she thinks and act just as freely, and, full of energy, she tends to run headfirst into problems without enough forethought. Her power as a dragon allows her to Analyze. With time she can know everything about something she looks at, but using her power is a little straining. As a result, the face she makes when using her power is...um...a little off-putting.
Rosalie Rosemarie
Her sprite is a bit off, for reference

Age: 20 years old
Height: 158cm / 5'2"
Hair color: Blonde
Eye color: Teal

Skills: Playing piano
Likes: Fun things
Dislikes: Studying

Rosalie is a winged informant who often deals with Theo. She's the daughter of a well-known aristocrat, but found her life boring, so she fled home and became an informant because she deemed it fun. Despite being well-educated and an informant, she's a bit naive and sometimes gets fooled easily. Travels with her butler, Levin.
Levin Bloom

Age: 28 years old
Height: 172cm / 5'7"
Hair color: Beige fur with burgundy patches
Eye color: Orange

Skills: Singing
Likes: Work, money
Dislikes: Late people

Rosalie's butler, who went with Rosalie when she fled home. A serious and focused worker who doesn't mind traveling with Rosalie so long as he gets paid. He frequently worries about Rosalie's childish behavior and gullibility. Occasionally, he writes letters to Rosalie's father to let him know she's fine. Has trouble reading without his spectacles.
Hilda

[No sprite]

Age: 3 years (Appears eleven)
Height: 122cm / 4'
Hair color: Black
Eye color: Amethyst Purple
Skills: Braiding hair, keeping track of time
Likes: Quiet, Anton
Dislikes: Loud people, being alone

A young dragon who Efi befriended in Gainsboro City.

Part 2
Theobald Leonhart

*
Age:
23 years old
Height: 170cm / 5'7"
Hair color (natural): Light pinkish-orange
Eye color (natural): Green

Skills: Lying
Likes: Beer, money, women, Efi
Dislikes: Annoyances

Though he can be exceptionally rude, typically he'll remain polite to people who don't know who he is. Theo is Efi's primary caretaker, and effectively her 'papa' - though he hates to be called that. His wish to get rid of a painful lie scarring his past is what created Efi.

*This is the closest image to what his real appearance is as an adult - typically his hair and eye colors will be altered to hide his identity.
Efina

Age: 1 year and 5 months! (Appears seven years old)
Height: 106cm / 3'6", and still growing!
Hair color: Light pinkish-orange
Eye color: Blue

Skills: Eating lies, breathing fire
Likes: Sweets, Theo, playing
Dislikes: Division

The young Lie-Eating Dragon, who has really grown in the 6 months since the Gainsboro incident! She can read and write near-competently now, and moved on to harder math (which she hates). Her power to eat lies has been growing stronger, too, so her appetite has grown to let her eat more before getting full. ...And she can breathe a little more fire.

The Lie-Eating Dragon and the Big Liar

"...Sniff…"

"Hey, answer me. What's wrong?"

"I...had a bad dream…"

"A dream?"

"We were back at...and, I didn't make it in time, and..."

"..."

"Everything was turning black, and..."

"Hey. It's all right. You saved me, remember? Nothing like that is gonna happen."

"...Yeah, but...."

"Come on. Quit crying. I'm not going anywhere."

"...Mhm. Sniff."

"...If you're done, then get back to sleep. We need to get up early."

"Umm…could I...sleep in your bed?"

"What? Why, surely you didn't wet your bed?"

"What… No! But, I was scared, I dunno if I can go to sleep unless..."

"..."

"Pleeaaaaase?"

"As long as you actually go to sleep."

"Yay!"

"Hey, hey… remember personal space."

"Awh… but I know you don't mind, so it's okay, isn't it?"

"And what makes you so sure of that?"

"...Ehehe! I love you, too!"

"...Is that right. Get to sleep, now."

"Good night, Theo!"

"Good night, Efi."

========

"Yeah. I'm already on the train. I'll be there before long. ...Uh-huh. Hey, don't forget you owe me. ...Right, whatever. See you then."

Theo puts down his, um, sell-o-phone? And then looks out the window with a mean sigh.

"Were you talking to your...informery?" You ask, tilting your head back and looking up at him.

"Informant," He corrects you. "Yes, that was feathers. Wanted to know if I was still going to show. Wish she wouldn't make calls for something so pointless…" he slips the phone-thing into his coat.

"Huh. But isn't it really neat? You get to talk to people, whenever!" You always thought it was so weird how he barely ever used it, and only did super serious business with it. You wondered… "I wanna see it!"

You try to reach and open his coat, and he shuts you down right away with a hard flick to the forehead!

"Oww!"

"How many times do I have to tell you not to do that?" He looks down at you, squinting hard. Everyone says he looks scary when his face scrunches like that, but you know it's pretty much what he always looks like when he's not lying to someone.

"Umm...oh, right. ...Knives." You admit slowly, remembering that time you made him drop a few and hurt yourself.

"...Yes, that's one of many reasons you shouldn't be grabbing at my clothes. If you want to see the phone, you could just try asking."

You look back up with excitement in your eyes.

"Oh! Then, can I see it?"

"No."

Hard rejection.

"Boo! Why not?" you ask, pouting.

"Can't have it any more busted than it already is. It's not easy to get one of these. You gonna pay for it when you break it?"

"Uuuuh… but, I won't break it!"

"You probably will. You're a dummy, so it's expected."

"Mmmhhhh..." you groan, drooping in utter defeat.

Jeez, you kind of hoped when he promised to never lie to you that he'd be nicer to you, but it's backwards! Now when you ask for stuff he just says no flat-out, and he calls you a dummy more!

"Hey Theo, how much longer 'till we get there?"

"Hmm...not much longer, now."

Good! You're getting tired of this bumpy train. You wish there was an easier way to get to a new town, but you guess a train beats walking! Especially since Theo never wants to carry you…

Ehehe. You hope you grow up fast so you can learn to use your wings, soon! It'd be fun to fly around, and maybe you could carry Theo...hehe!

You guess he notices your smile, since he looks down at you with a lazy expression.

"You seem energetic, today."

"Ehehehehe…" you just laugh in response. You think about your destination, hoping there'll be something fun to do. Um...what was the place? "Hey Theo, where are we going, again?"

"Gainsboro City."

"Gains...borrow," you repeat him slowly. "Is it fun?"

"Dunno. But it's big, so I'm not letting you off on your own, anyways."

"Huhhh, but I'm already a year old…"

"Almost a year old," he quickly reminds you. "And dragon or not, I wouldn't let a one-year-old kid run around a big city like that, alone."

Huff. Theo's really no fun, sometimes.

"Hey," he pokes your head, re-getting your attention, and you tilt your head with a 'huh?'. He sighs. "Since we're almost there, let's decide on a name."

"Huh? Do you have to? You only used the last one for a day..."

"You know I have to. Remember, I'm only Theo when it's just us."

"...Uh-huh…"

Yeah, you know...he said as long as those bad guys he lied to are out there, he has to keep changing his name and look. But...it's so annoying to learn a new name everywhere you go! Stupid bad guys...and stupid Theo, lying to them in the first place! Once you grow up and get stronger, you'll have to go beat up the bad guys. Then...oh! Wait, those police captain dragons you always meet, they're really strong! And they don't like bad guys, either! You look to Theo with a hopeful smile,

"How come you don't ask the captains for help? If it's bad guys, then…"

"...The police don't usually help people like me."

He answers back in that bored voice he usually has when he's being all serious. You think hard. Hmmm...if they won't help Theo, then...

"Oh, then, what if you just told them it was for me? They like me a lot more than you!"

He groans, poking your forehead as he ignores your great idea,

"Alright, that's enough from you. The train's almost at station. If you want any say in what name you're gonna have to learn, you'd better hurry."

Umm...a new name. Right, so, last time he was Sid. And you remember before he used...um, he was Harold, and Al, aaand...Leo? So...hmm...how about...

[] "Ashley!"

[] "Riley!"

[] "Levy!"

[] "Um...I can't think of anything."

Yep, yep, your first vote isn't earth shattering. Just pick a name, it'll be Theobald's new name until he ends up needing another.

No more posts, you can vote, go nuts.

[x] "Matthew Mercer!"

...it's who I'm imagining in my head when Theobald speaks. Let's just ... cut out the middleman. Everyone's happier.

[X] "Foamy!"

*looks at foamy's title* :V

Arrival at Gainsboro City
"Um...I can't think of anything."

"...Alright. ...Then, it's Gill."

"Gill? Like a fish?"

"Like a name. Remember it."

"Okay! Theo is Gill! Got it!"

========
You're already out of your cabin when the train is stopping. Once the doors open, you extend your hand to the girl at your side, and she readily takes it with her own. You step out the doors, into the city where you'll be known as Gill for the time of your stay.

With this, you've arrived at Gainsboro City. A large city with a stiff, modern feel to it. It's mostly a series of winding roads and fancy cobblestone buildings, though the outskirts of the city are made up of various simplistic village houses built near the newly constructed steel and iron works factories.

You take a quick glance at the runt to make sure she's still at your side, and she shows you a big dumb grin in return. That answers that.

Runt in tow, you stroll away from the train platform, intent on hurrying to your destination. You were given the name of an establishment, and though you'd hoped the bird-brain would be kind enough to pick somewhere easy to find, currently you see no sign of the place she described.

At least the streets aren't too crowded. Shouldn't be hard to find someone to ask. Idly, you tug on Efi's arm, after you notice your pace slowing thanks to her lack of attention. She seems impressed by the buildings. Considering you'd just come from a much fancier place, you'd think she wouldn't be so impressed, but such is childhood, you suppose. How long do dragons stay like this...?

Well, whatever. You spot a young man that looks to be from here, loitering outside some kind of shop, reading a book. You'll try him, first.

"Excuse me, sir," you approach with a smile as you pull down your scarf, "Do you have a moment?"

"Hm?"

He looks up at you, then to Efi, and back to you.

"Ah, 'course. I'm just waiting on someone. Do you need something?" The man asks, half-closing his book and using his finger to keep his place.

"Yes, you see, my sister and I just got here-" you look down to her with a soft smile, and notice her wave to the man, "We were looking for 'The Familiar Tavern', would you know where that is?"

"Mm. Yeah. It's not terribly far. Head down that way, and..."

...

"I see, thanks for your help."

"Not a problem. Good day."

You yank Efi's arm to snap her out of her daydreaming, and follow the directions the young man provided to you. From what he said, it shouldn't take you long to reach...

..."The Familiar Tavern..." you read aloud as you spot the sign. "Come on, Efi."

You hurry through the doors, pulling the girl along with you, and immediately you hear a familiar voice.

"Oho! There you are!"

Your winged informant, feathers, is sitting at a table in the corner. ...Her name is Rosalie, but you'd prefer to keep letting her think you just can't remember her name. Feathers is much simpler. You make your way over to feathers.

"It's been a while, hasn't it?" she greets as you approach. As she looks over to Efi, she smiles, "My, have you grown a bit since then?"

"Ehehe...the captain said so, too! I wonder if I'll be as tall as him?"

"Hmm...I don't think a girl as cute as you should grow so tall." She pauses and looks at you. "Besides, surely poor...er, your poor caretaker here would look minuscule next to you, were you that big."

You talk over Efi's giggles to cut their chat short.

"I'm Gill, here. She's my sister."

"I see." She answers promptly. "Well, Gill, how did the party go?"

"Surely you've heard."

"Ohohoh!" She laughs noisily, raising her hand to her mouth in that annoying high-class gesture. "Indeed. It was quite the disaster, so I hear. The mansion suffered some damage, a number were injured, and the thief made off with the antique... is what I know. So, do you have anything else to tell me?"

"That depends how much you're ready to pay me."

"Tch. You don't have to worry about that. Levin isn't here at the moment."

She's boldly told you that the level-headed member of her duo isn't around to tell her what to do. You'll take that to mean she's free to spend as she pleases. You start sharing.

"We were right next to the antique when it got nabbed. Met the thief face to face."

"Oh, is that so?" She leans forward, curiosity piqued. "Could you have found any clues to their methods? Their identity?"

"No on the identity. But, they did use something unique. A noisemaking device - called it ultrasonic? - that apparently disrupts a dragon's powers."

"What? Is that so?" she suddenly blurts, wide-eyed. You nod and she leans back, "I've never heard of such a thing... something like that would... Hm, so the thief gave you a bit a trouble, did he, little Efi?" She suddenly asks the girl.

"Uh-huh..." she tilts her head as she slowly answers. "Um, but that thief person wasn't-"

Like a flash of lightning, your index finger strikes against Efi's forehead in a brutal flicking. The most effective way to signal her to stop talking. She pouts and holds her hand against the spot you flicked, and you go back to feathers.

"We had a bit of time to investigate," you remember that bit of sidetracking you had to do when you got tangled up in those maids' mess...what a headache. "And we found some other things. Namely, the antique that was stolen was a replication. A fake."

"Whaaa? And the owner didn't know?"

"Nope. And he didn't question it either - because he got it from a deal with the gang head in town."

Feathers' lips purse shut as she stares at you.

"...Is that right?" She slowly shuts her eyes, shaking her head minutely. " ...You truly do stumble your way into the craziest things."

You shrug.

"It's not stumbling. It's work. As in, how I make money. ...Ahem."

She straightens out her feathers all proper-like as she sits up straight.

"Right, right. Well, you did find some interesting things. And I suppose I ought to thank you for attending that party in my place. So," she hands you a modest purse. You take a mere glance inside before looking back to her.

"Is this how you thank someone? You were so worried that you called me, and yet this is all you're gonna offer? I'd say an extra hundred, at least."

"Tch." She scoffs, getting worked up. Perfect. "Rude, as always. What makes you think I was worried about you?"

"Well, were you?" You ask simply.

"Of course not! Now-"

Plop!

You hear a telltale thud against the floor underneath the table. Feathers freezes - you can see her feathers raising slightly. Efi ducks down slightly to see under the table, but you already know what's there.
"oF CoURsE nOt! Of cOuRSe NOt!" the little monster speaks repeatedly in that garbled, squeaky voice. Yup, this is how it always goes. Someone tells a lie in front of Efi, and one of these little lies appears. Even if it weren't already obvious what the lie was, it'll keep repeating the lie over and over. Of course, feathers knows this...she's met Efi before.

You look over to Efi, "You know the routine, time to eat-"

"...Tch! Rrgh!"

Feathers stands up aggressively and starts stomping the little lie. Efi squeaks in surprise, and you wait patiently for feathers to be done. She won't be able to kill the lie, or even make it shut up. For whatever reason, only you and Efi seem to be able to hurt them significantly.

So you watch as she repeatedly stomps the lie in frustration, until she finally slumps back into her chair and lays her head down, hiding her face in her arms.

...

"Right, then. Efi?"

Efi takes your cue and snatches up the little lie. With a flourish, she opens wide and chomps on its head. While she munches away, you turn to feathers.

"How about this. For that extra hundred, I'll throw in a bonus and forget what just happened."

...

A bit later, after feathers has calmed down - and paid you your due - she sighs and asks if you have any other business.

"Nope. That's all I had for you."

"...Alright, then. I guess we're done. If you suddenly need to see me, I'll be staying here. Though...I imagine I'll be leaving this city early next morning, regardless," she admits with yet another sigh.

"Don't like the city life?"

"Hmph. I wouldn't say that. I just don't like this city. Half the people seem clueless, and the other half seem on edge for no reason. And it smells."

Of course. Quite the high-class complaints to be making. Still...

"Surely there's not 'no reason', right?" you probe her, hoping she'll play along after that outburst put her off kilter.

Instead, she just sighs. Again. "Who knows. If you find out, feel free to let me know."

"For a price," you shoot back.

"Tch."

You look out the nearby window, then turn to her as you lean back in your chair.

"Well, I think the runt and I will be staying here, too. So if you've got any other confessions, we shouldn't be hard to find."

At that, she glares harshly.

"How odd. I didn't hear a hint of forgetfulness in your voice."

"Forgetfulness? Of what, exactly?"

"That sounded better," she gets up with a slow sigh. "Now is about the time I should be going to meet Levin. Goodbye, for now - it was so nice to see you."

Plop!

You try not to grin as Efi scoops up another lie in her arms, chomping it as it squeaks, "NIcE tO sEe YoU".

"Likewise, feathers."

And with that, feathers leaves the tavern. You watch Efi slowly eat up the little lie she left behind.

"Uhh...I feel pretty full," she whines as the last of the lie disappears.

"Hm. You ate a lot the other day, huh."

"A lot is an...understate!" she declares proudly.

"...I think you meant, understatement."

"Ah...oops."

Still, that's new. You wonder where she learned that one. She's always picking up words you don't remember using. ...While it's not inherently bad, she'd better not pick up any profanity after you've spent this long avoiding it.

...No use just sitting here, thinking about it. You ought to get a room at this "tavern", which in reality is basically just a large hotel with a restaurant on the base floor.

You take Efi's hand again and go to ask for a room...
========
You follow Theo- no, Gill! To your hotel room! He's grumbling about it costing too much, but you know he has plenty of money. How come he's so cheap?

Whatever! You have to go up some stairs, but when you get to your room, it's great! The beds look so fluffy! Gill heads straight in and sits down with his journal-thing. You jump and flop onto the nearer of the two beds to feel the fluff!

"Hey, let's play!" you shout while you lightly jump on the bed.

"Nope. I've still got work to finish."

Awww...

"Can I have a snack?"

"I thought you were full."

Booooooo...

"Then-"

"I'm going to head out in a bit to do a few things. You stay here."

"Huh?! I wanna go with you!" you hop down off the bed and whine. He never lets you see the bigger places!

"No chance. You're staying here, no whining or I am skipping your snack."

You sink back onto the bed and groan. As he goes back to his journal, you roll around mumbling how mean he is and how he's no fun...

And just like he said, a bit later he puts his journal back in his coat and stands up.

"I'm only going to be a couple hours at most. You can...draw, or sleep, or something, but don't leave the room."

"Wha-?! I can't even leave the room?!" your jaw drops. How are you supposed to survive that long with nothing to do!?

"This isn't the kind of place to be playing around. It's too big, and there's too many people around. Be a good runt and watch the room."

You pout, but there isn't anything you can do but silently agree... He leaves a couple of wrapped cookies on the counter and says they're your snack, reminds you not to leave, then goes out and shuts the door. You sit around on the bed...

...Boring...

...

...

...Boring! You're so bored! It's gotta have been a few hours, right?! You look at the clock in the room and think...the little hand means...and...whaaa?! It's been 20 minutes?! You can't take this! It won't be that bad if you just walk around a little, right? You can come back before he gets back! Yeah!

So you peek out the door...and Gill's not there. Well duh, he said he was leaving like an...eter...eterny ago. You walk out into the hallway and look around. There's a lot of doors, but you think this whole floor is just rooms. Oh, there's the stair case! And you're on the...third floor. You can remember that!

Now, if you're gonna look around, you should try a different floor. Hmm...which way should you go first?

[] Go upstairs!

[] Go downstairs!

[] Go outside!

More crucial decisions. All work and no play...something, something, whatever. Adventure time!
The objective as to what you're doing here will make sense later don't worry

[x] Go outside

First item on the agenda is to find some more cookies. If Gill catches us, we can bribe him with the cookies, and pouting. Lots of pouting.
