The Last of Us Coming to HBO from Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin

Article:
Craig Mazin, the creator of the acclaimed limited series Chernobyl, is reteaming with HBO to adapt The Last of Us, the massive Sony PlayStation video game franchise.

In a rare development in the world of video game adaptations, the writer and creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann, is also involved and will work with Mazin to pen and executive produce what is intended to be a series.

Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Evan Wells, the president of Naughty Dog, the Santa Monica-based developer of the game. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. It will be the first television series from PlayStation Productions.

Okay so I have a question- they say they're going to keep Ellie's sexuality from the games, but literally her sexuality is only there so that Naughty Dog has more women to throw into the fridge. Is this going to be a "Girl of the Week" thing, where each episode, Ellie has a new love interest, but to stay faithful to the game, she dies at the end of each episode to leave Ellie sad?

Do we even know if it's going to be a prequel, a sequel, an adaptation of the game? Or just a side-story in the universe?

I never thought I'd have hope for a video game adaptation.

Why them, though?

I've played the game, I know what happens. Why not focus on other people straight off the bat?

I'll grant that the first episode will depressing AF, though.

I honestly wouldn't mind a spin-off series that only tangentially touches upon Joel and Ellie's story. Expanding more on the initial outbreak and conflict between the government and Fireflies could be a good route. Add some cameos from some of the named NPCs.

I think it might be difficult to replicate the original game's story without upsetting the fan base. Like, how do you cast Joel and Ellie after we've spent so much time with the in-game models?

There's no shortage of middle-aged actors who'd look good in a greying beard or young actresses to play snarky teens.

Biggest issue is how to make the show not come across as not just another Walking Dead clone in a genre that already looong overstayed it's popularity.

Simple. They'll make it good this time.

I cannot explain why, but this picture doesn't look real. It looks like a render. I can't even put into words why I feel that way.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When you look closely you see it's real, and that the crashed plane is obvious CGI, but at first glance? It looks like a game.

Which is kind of a compliment on how photorealistic the games are, I guess?

I mean, that's kind the problem with the Last of Us (or really any video game adaptation) - people expect 100% visual fidelity to the games, but once you take out player control (and the shortcut emotional attachment that comes with it), the plot really isn't all that special.

I was commenting on a single promo picture, I don't think it's enough to comment on the plot or the visual fidelity of an entire show that haven't even released a single trailer yet.

HBO's highly anticipated "The Last of Us" TV series, based on the popular PlayStation video game, will debut on Jan. 15, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, the company confirmed Wednesday. Season 1 will consist of nine episodes.

The official date announcement comes after eagle-eyed HBO Max users spotted an accidental leak on the streaming site Tuesday morning.

Wow, Jan 15? That's just before my birthday! At the very least I will enjoy Pedro Pascal's acting in this series, I'm sure. Even so I will remain mildly optimistic, since it's been a while since I considered myself a 'fan' of TLOU, so if it crashes and burns at the very least I won't be too broken up about it.

A reminder the show's premiering tonight at 6 PST (9 EST) Lot of the reviews I've seen so far are saying good things so I'm hopeful it's going to do the original. Found a compilation with a few clips from the show Sarah, Joel, and Tommy in the car, Marlene talking to Ellie about going tonthe Firefly lab, Ellie getting tested by a Firefly doc

Good balance between what's kept from the game and how they've changed things up a bit to keep me from guessing on what's going to happen next. The cast has done a good job so far, especially Pedro as Joel in my opinion.

One difference I noticed is between the game and show

Is while they're not whitewashing Joel, they are definitely downplaying the worst qualities he developed after his Daughter died. Like maybe I'm remembering wrong but I'm pretty sure Joel's scheme in the game had nothing to do with his brother. Like he was just out for his and Tess's own survival, his brother was just someone they kind of ran into and I think it was pretty clear that they'd fallen out of contact for at least a few years.

Also Joel seems to be better off at the start since he's not struggling to stay afloat just busy with a job. That's probably due to the opening taking place in 2003 instead of 2013. Not relevant but just something to note
