Konohagakure
The Village Hidden in the Leaves
The Pride of the Fire Nation
That Damn Village
Forged just over one hundred years ago by the brutal fires of the Warring Clans Era, Konoha was the first Hidden Village. Initially an idea sparked by the friendship between Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha, the two would make their dreams reality when they brought their two clans and vassals together to form an alliance. In year forty-seven of the Faitama Dynasty before Daimyo Senzai Faitama Sasuke Sarutobi, Hashirama Senju, Yorushi Kurama, and Madara Uchiha signed what would become known as the Konoha Compact. Sealed in blood and chakra, the Compact bound these shinobi to each other and to the service of the Faitama Dynasty.
The Compact would find itself tested just a year later in the form of other haphazard alliances. The Akimichi, Nara, and Yamanaka clans found their services in short demand when faced with the power of Konoha and so plotted to destabilize the Compact. Through torture and espionage, Madara Uchiha learned of this and began making plans to crush the shoddy alliance. Hashirama, however, had a different plan. The Senju Clan Head called for a Summit with the leaders of these clans and made an unprecedented offer. One month later, the Nara, Akimichi, and Yamanaka clans were welcomed into Konoha and their blood sealed to the Compact.
The other Nations watched in horror as the Fire Nation gained the loyalty of numerous powerful clans. Recognizing it was a new age and they would be eclipsed if they did not act, the Daimyo and clans of other nations quickly founded their own Hidden Villages to counteract the growing hegemony of the Fire Nation.
Realizing that the power buildup would lead to devastation as opposed to harmony, Hashirama decided that a policy of mutually assured destruction would hold the peace. Despite protests from his younger brother Tobirama and Madara (one of the few times the two shared similar policies), Hashirama proceeded with his plan and gave the other villages the Bijuu, keeping only the Kyuubi and Nibi for Konoha. His wife, Mito Uzumaki, became the Jinchuuriki of the Kyuubi and the Nibi was sealed inside a young Sarutobi by the name of Kamen.
It was at this point that the differences between Madara and Hashirama grew too great. Madara and Hashirama fought a furious battle, but the two went their separate ways after Hashirama defeated the Uchiha Clan Head. The ideal of peaceful solutions would dominate Konoha foreign policy for the next two years, but alas Hashirama's Naïveté proved to to be its downfall.
With the destruction of the Whirlpool village by the Village Hidden in the Stone, the First Great Shinobi World War began. There have been few like it in history. Destruction reigned upon the nations. Few regions escaped untouched from the horrors of mass genjutsu and the very continent itself was warped by the numerous ninjutsu performed.
Atrocities were performed by both sides. The greatest of which occurred in the Lightning Territory. Kamen, a teenager burdened with the responsibility of being the Jinchuuriki's jailer, found himself alone behind enemy lines. Devastated by the loss of his team, Kamen went on a killing spree across the Lightning Village. Over one hundred thousand Lightning and Stone civilians were killed by the young man's rampage until he was brought down by the First Hokage himself.
The war waged for another two years before finally being brought to a close. So many had perished. Many concessions were made in order to maintain a balance of power among the villages. The Nibi was gifted to the Lightning Village as recompense for the war crimes inflicted upon the nation. Hatred still festered.
Shortly after the war, Hashirama fought Madara Uchiha at the Valley of the End. Madara was killed, but Hashirana sustained grievous injuries which lead to his death a few months later. Tobirama Senju became Hokage.
Tobirama was an apt administrator and master of many forbidden jutsu. Several clans which had remained neutral to this point, like the Hyuuga, Aburame, and Inuzuka aligned themselves to Konoha though we're not required to sign the Compact.
The Second Great Shinobi War started because of love. The daughter of the First Raikage fell for an Iwagakure Jounin. Though the two villages were friendly to each other...there was still a great deal of suspicion. Nonetheless, the first Raikage allowed to two to wed.
Shinobi loyalty is rare. During the wedding, Stone turned on Lightning and slaughtered their Kage and sent the body of his daughter in pieces to the Lightning Village. War was declared.
Though Konoha wished to stay out of the conflict, the Village was forced to join on the side of Lightning when Stone brought four Bijuu into the war which had broken numerous articles of the treaty that ended the first Shinobi War. No village was allowed to have more than two Jinchuuriki at a time, nor were Bijuu allowed to remain without a host.
This war was perhaps far bloodier than the first. The Bijuu rampaged and though the Second Hokage was powerful, he lacked his brother's ability to control them. Furthermore, though the new Raikage was powerful, he was young and untested. This, coupled with tensions from the previous war, pushed Konoha and Lightning back. Salvation came from an unlikely source for the two villages. Kirigakure, the Village Hidden in the Mist, joined the battle. Their Legendary Seven Swordsmen turned the tide against the untamed Bijuu and their forces.
Sunagakure was determined to remain out of the war, however the joining of Kirigakure greatly tipped the power scales. The Second Kazekage threatened to join the war on the side of the Alliance if Stone did not surrender. An armistice was reached, but not before the Second Hokage was killed.
Left to handle the aftermath, Sarutobi Hiruzen proved himself a deft politician as he secured numberous reparations for Konoha from both Lightning and Stone for their actions. This created even further resentment towards Konoha from the two, but they were too weakened to do much about it. Konoha and Kirigakure entered a formal alliance though an alliance among Shinobi an uneasy thing.
The world entered an era of peace as the memories of the war stifled any desire for greater conflict.
Unfortunately, the rise of the Ninja Villages led to the decline of the power that the Daimyo held. Though the Faitama Dynasty held power over Konoha with the Compact, the current Daimyo was old and without children and a new Dynasty would soon emerge. Two candidates arose to claim the title, Genji Faitama and Horatio Temark. Genji, the current Daimyo's cousin and only living relative, was the only one able to invoke the Compact. And yet for all this...Konoha was unable to prevent his assassination. Horatio Temark became Daimyo.
Accusations rose against Konoha as being behind the assassination, a clear violation of the Articles signed after the Second Shinobi War. Tensions ran high.
It only takes a spark. Several Fire Nation Nobles chose to rebel against the New Daimyo and were backed by the Lightning, Sand, and Stone Villages. Konoha would invoke war against these three and so began the Third Great Shinobi War. Legends arose. Myths such as the Sannin carved their name into history. The Seven Swordsmen cemented their place as the protagonists of many a tale. And the deadliest of all would become Hokage. Minato Namikaze obliterated opposing forces. Entire squadrons of Shinobi slaughtered in a flash. Not since Hashirama Senju was an opponent so unmatched.
The war ended quickly and Minato became Hokage.
The Shinobi system fully cemented under his rule and war seemed a distant thing. Konoha was poised to enter a golden age...until the Kyuubi attacked. Minato Namikaze gave his life for the village he loved and slew the beast.
With his death, a new Cold War began among the villages to accumulate power. The two greatest rivals being Konoha and Kumogakure. Incidents such as Konoha refusing to hand over a Hyuuga Assassin only exasperated these tensions.
And now a new generation of legends will face these tumultuous times. Their bloodlines impeccable, their teachers resolute, their loyalty to their village...who knows what paths they shall take! They are the Konoha Twelve...
