Episode 3.4: Brave New World
"Obaa-san, I was wondering something."

"What is it?" Nekobaa asks.

"Do you have an idea of what's going on in the Leaf right now? Any advice to give me?"

"There are those shinobi tests going on, and from what I hear all of the Kage are going to be watching. Very serious this year, it seems. The Uchiha have been coming by pretty often and stocking up on weapons. I think if you run into the Hokage's wife while you're there, she'll be sympathetic to you."

"Why's that?"

"Hm? You didn't know? She's already met your grandfather. It was the same night that the Nine Tails attacked the Leaf," Nekobaa explains. "So it's possible she knows something that can help you. Besides that, she seems to have some admiration for that fellow. Never said why, though. Not her or the Fourth."

You muse on that. Maybe the old man punched out the Nine Tails...no, no way. That's a lot even for a supposed monster like him. But you're really curious now...the Hokage's wife. Kushina Uzumaki, the jinchuuriki of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. And Yukari's relative. They haven't met...huh.

"The Three are also already in the Leaf from what I hear. They won't be hostile, but they do have their eccentricities about them. Jiraiya, especially." She leans close to you. "Keep an eye on the girls. Especially your blonde friend."

You nod back. "Right."

"Other than that, I can't tell you much else. Things will be about the same as ever from what I hear, just more shinobi around to keep an eye on things. I expect the warmongers from Cloud to stir up all kind of trouble...it wasn't that long ago they tried to kidnap that Hyuuga girl."

"Hinata, you mean."

"Yes, that's the one. Can you imagine one of those madmen with one of the great doujutsu? Gives me the shivers just thinking about it."

You try to imagine A with the Byakugan. Terrifying doesn't begin to describe it.

"That...is bad, yeah."

"Joshua~ We're all done," Hannah calls out.

"S'pose that's our time to head out. Thank you for all of your help, obaa-san."

"It was no problem at all. You young ones take care, now. Come by again if you have need of anything."

The three of you bow to Nekobaa and then hand off candy to Tamaki, who happily accepts.

"Bye-bye! Be safe, all of you!" she says as you leave the front entrance.

Ritsu secures the large storage scroll with a strap on her lower back. As soon as she's ready, you make your way out of the Sky Ward and to your next destination, Tanzaku Quarter.

---

"So we should talk to the Hokage's wife, then," Ritsu says to you. "I can make contact if needed, since I'm not on any lists as far as anyone knows. Not even the yakuza really know about me, since Tetsuda was so secretive about his visits."

Two days have passed and you're in the Tanzaku Quarter, a lively town just a ways southwest of the Leaf. Gambling, alcohol, and women: these are the town's three pillars and where its income flows from. With the Chuunin Exams already in full swing and the final tournament already set, betting is frenzied.

The streets are bustling, with a few family friendly things like ice cream stands popping up here and there to accomodate the underaged visitors. Vendors hawk their wares; accessories and paintings, plush dolls of tailed beasts, some are auctioning what they claim to be battle worn weapons and gear while other sell off replicas. You even see books about fictional adventures of Leaf heroes, like the Third Hokage, or Jiraiya. There are also some books for sale that seem to be incredibly popular from the stickers and signage. You pick one up and read the title.

"Make-Out Paradise," you mumble. "Never heard of it."

"Those books are really good, sir. It's a story about young love and the journey into adulthood," the shopkeeper says in the background.

"Hm." You wonder if Noriko has read these. She does have...unique tastes, you remember.

"I didn't know you read erotica."

You look down at the book as Hannah catches up to you. "This is erotica? I guess she would be reading it, then."

"Who?"

"Noriko. I told you about her."

"Ah, right, right. Your librarian friend. Yes, there's a whole series of these trashy things. Whoever's written them is definitely filthy rich by now - pun intended - and they're planning to release a movie based on the one you have there within a few months."

"You read them?" you ask.

"Just the first one. I'm reasonably sure the stories are autobiographical; the secondhand embarassment is too staggeringly high to think otherwise. There are the sorts of detailed descriptions that you only find from extended peeping sessions."

"You know a lot about this, but it only makes sense," you say as you put the book down. "Which is unfortunate in its own way."

"Quite."

You head away from the shop and down the busy street. "What do you read, then?"

"Oh, I'm not above erotic art, if that's your impression. But my tastes are much more sophisticated. Personally, I recommend the 'Sugar Lily' series, written by a woman under pseudonym, and 'Ruthless Hearts', written by a man. The first is an intimate look at a polyamourous relationship between three women, and it's daring while having incredibly warm and healing moments. The second is much more driven, raw, emotional, and dealing with themes closer to our reality. Both excellently done in their own ways. I have copies I can lend you."

"I'll think about it," you say honestly. "Always good to expand your horizons."

"Yes, exactly. Refreshing to hear, and only reinforces why I adore you so."

"Lay it on, eh."

"Of course~"

You shake your head. Ritsu approaches from the other end of the street and waves. "Hey. Anything?"

"Nothing unusual so far," she reports. "Just the usual betting. The red light district is quite busy, but that's expected with all of the excitement surrounding the tournament. We can confirm that the Five Kage are all staying within the Leaf."

"No word on a summit, then."

"Nothing official or unofficial from what I can tell, sir."

"We'll probably have to head in ourselves, then. Which isn't a bad idea. Granny said that Lady Kushina would treat us well," you muse. "Ideas, ladies? We'll be sticking around at least a day or two to gather some more intel, so if you have anything after that, let's hear them."

"I think that we should head directly to the Leaf," Hannah says. "It serves a social and strategic purpose here. The Five Kage aren't so bold as to do anything to disrupt their dick-measuring contest, formally called the exam final round. We would have room to maneuver and clarify a few things on what we could call neutral ground. In any case, we can't really prime our arrival; now that we're here, I can tell that my network is utterly compromised."

"I agree with Miss Hannah here. My guess is also that security is relaxed for now and will only continue to increase rapidly as the tournament gets closer. Much of the defensive plans will be focused on multiple areas with each of the finalists training for their matches, and the Kage moving around. Once everyone gets together, it makes it much harder for us to make any sort of movement without inviting chaos," Ritsu points out.

"Both good points."

You fold your arms and think.

[] After a short stay, head down to the Leaf. You can take advantage of relatively lightened security to move around and explore without much incident.
-[] Try and make contact with Kushina Uzumaki. According to what you know, she would be interested in seeing you.
-[] Yukari said that the Mizukage, Mei Terumi, was insistent on meeting with you. Maybe you could find a path to her.
-[] An option is to present yourself freely to the Fourth Hokage first. You don't know exactly how he and his administration will act, but they don't seem particularly hostile.
-[] Simply entering the Leaf will do. Whoever finds you first will find you, and you'll wing it from there.
-[] Write in.

[] Stay in Tanzaku Quarter until around the time the final tournament starts.
-[] Rest and take it easy.
-[] Training? (write in)

Episode 3.5: Brave New World
"We'll go with what you've suggested," you say to the girls. "Our first action should be making contact with Lady Kushina, since she's guaranteed not to be hostile towards us."

"I'll send out a feeler later today," Hannah says. "It will help us avoid any potential unpleasantness."

"Great. In the meantime, we'll stop at a hotel and rest up. Whatever data you can gather while we're here is a bonus, but take it easy. No sense in overextending."

"Yes, Daddy," Hannah says. "We'll try not to stir up too much trouble."

You roll your eyes at her and start looking for a hotel.

---

After checking in and putting away your equipment, you head back out onto the streets. Hannah and Ritsu are going to one of the big casinos nearby, no doubt to stir up trouble in the flashy clothes they're wearing. But then, every moment like this was a learning experience for Ritsu, so you didn't mind it much.

The betting places have magazines detailing the tournament and its participants. You purchase one and flip through some of the profiles as well as the matchups that have been decided.

---

"Dominated by Leaf as expected," you say. "Rock isn't in the picture but Sand is...wonder how they feel about that. Mist has done well, too. And the featured matchup, Leaf against Cloud. That's sure to get everyone in their seats and throwing bags of money down for tickets. The whole world will be watching, after all. It's the kind of thing that can make or break a nation...the Cloud's best rookie against the Hokage's son."

You roll up the magazine and put it in your back pocket.

"Whatever happens...it's gonna put a dent in national relations. And the Cloud are known to be sore losers, unfortunately. I wonder if this is really just a coincidence..."

---

Another two days pass and you reach the Leaf.

Hannah and Ritsu gleaned some information from their "date" at the casino, namely that Cloud has quite a bit riding on the results of the exams and that Miyajima isn't viewed as a human being by most of the Cloud. Sand you know about, but the country that's spending money wildly and aggressively stockpiling arms is more of an immediate concern. There's a lot of money flying around due to gambling and other assorted fun activities, but this time it's on a much higher level than normal and that will supposedly have an influence on how some of the so-called "less important" matches will play out. The Mizukage is no fan of corruption and so her kids are the least likely to take any sort of dive, Leaf has a lot of pride at stake and almost all of the kids involved on their side are products of noble clans. To round it out, Haruno despite being from a common clan is a student of Tsunade, so she probably doesn't know how to do anything but fight fair. That has her crossed off too.

This leaves you with Gaara. You think that Rasa needs to prove that Gaara is stable and reliable enough to be lent out on missions, especially after word has been spreading about the Sand's troubles. So he's out.

Right now, everyone has something to prove. Which is sort of reassuring, and yet not really at the same time somehow. Leaf, Mist, Sand, and Cloud are in. Two of the most volatile villages have made it to the top and should be getting job offers no matter what just as a matter of principle. No, that's not it. Your worry is that everyone's in the same place at once. It's not threat of violence between the Kage or their subordinates. Leaf has the means to crush all of that before it can get started.

Hannah got a message back from one of her contacts. Kushina's elements in Leaf are aware of your imminent arrival and someone will be sent to your location once they realize you're within range. In that case, all you can really do is head forward.

"Do we have a plan if anything should go wrong?" Hannah asks as you near the massive gates of the Hidden Leaf. "Besides punching really hard and hoping for the best, of course."

"Nope, that's about it," you say.

"Understood. I simply wanted us all to be on the same page."

"Just like you. Always considerate of others. Well, if our intel is wrong it won't be because of malicious intent. Our sources are pretty reliable."

"I mean to say that there are always elements out of our control. Yukari did give us the important parts, but I understand that even the Leaf has its own dark elements."

"Yeah. Can't really run a city of shinobi any other way. Anyone in particular we should be looking out for?" you ask.

"A fellow by the name of Danzo Shimura. The Third Hokage's contemporary and former candidate for that same position. He's had his hand in many an incident, and rumours abound that he was backing the political stranglehold of Hanzo in the Hidden Rain. Nobody knows what truly came of that, though. The Uchiha have a particular dislike of him."

"I'm assuming the Fourth has kept him in check."

"Perhaps. But the hardliners have their ways of skirting the law. You know this, of course."

"Sure do. Mom and Dad had to root out political corruption more than once since they took their offices. Sucks, especially when you think the best of people."

"Indeed. Ritsu, have you given any thought to political involvement?" Hannah asks her.

"Yes. Up to becoming a head of state, in fact. Tearing apart the system with its own controls is really the only way to accomplish anything."

"My, we've become ambitious. But not self-destructive, I hope."

"There is the temptation..."

"Give it some more thought before you do anything reckless. You're worth more than the sum of your parts," you say to her.

"Yes, sir. I'll be careful."

You smile and nod. "All we ask."

A few minutes pass and you finally enter the village proper, going through the open, welcoming entrance and up a tree lined path. It's all very green, in fact, with trees and plants everywhere you look. The streets are busy and filled with people, though not as crowded as in Tanzaku Quarter. There are civilians and shinobi walking the same paths without incident. Clan children hop over rooftops and merchants are set up on the streets. There are shops with opened fronts and newly built patios to take advantage of the tournament rush.

Occasionally, you note those of other villages walking and wandering around. Leaf officers are present, and the ANBU are out of sight if they're around. Other than that, it's a peaceful time.

"It's lovelier than the last time I was here," Hannah comments. "Taking missions to the Leaf has always been a pleasure."

"I haven't been until now. It does look really nice," you say. "And there are a lot of different clans mixing together. Kind of crazy to think about."

"This village, more than any other, has a strong focus on community. While you do have squabbling over who is the strongest, all of the clans in this village are willing to come together without hesitation in order to solve problems. The reputation of the Uchiha, for example, has softened after the defeat of their coup and the desegregation of the police force. It turns out the Hyuuga rather enjoy having legal authority to spy on people."

"Heh. Go figure."

You hear a cough and turn your head for a moment. It came from a man with a blue bandana and a Leaf forehead protector on it. His eyes have dark lines under them like he hasn't slept any.

"Sounds of distant thunder," he says quietly.

"To signs of shattered skies," Hannah replies, giving out the coded response. He turns to face your group before starting back the way he came. You wait a minute before following at a distance. The walk leads you up through one of the main streets, past all the restaurants and vendors, the people walking the streets, and the shinobi that pay you no mind.

Then what you recognize as ANBU stands in front of you on an empty side street with the Leaf shinobi from earlier. This person has long white hair and a fox mask.

"Please follow me the rest of the way," she says in a gentle tone.

"..." Ritsu looks out at the mountain that towers over the village. The famous monument, called the Hokage Rock from what you remember, stands out. It currently has four faces in it, the last being that of the Fourth.

It's not a particularly kind look from her.

You keep it in mind as you follow the fox-mask woman down the street, which narrows into a small path. The group goes in single file past the trees, deeper and deeper into a small patch of forest. In the distance you can see a log cabin. The fox-masked woman knocks sixteen times in a pattern before the door opens. Another fox-mask with black hair is inside and you file in past them.

"Please sit," the first fox-mask says. "Would you like tea? Hot or cold?"

"Some cold tea would be nice," Hannah says. You sit on top of the plush cushions and make yourselves comfortable.

"Same for me," you say.

"I would like the same," Ritsu says.

"Understood." She turns to the other fox-mask. "Please send for Lady Kushina."

"Yes," the other woman responds. She knocks on the door five times before opening it and leaving.

The fox-mask woman returns a few minutes later with your cups of cold tea. You take note of her placing a kunai on the empty cushion and setting a cup on the low table. She then gets to her knees.

"Please wait," she says gently. You look at the kunai and notice it has three prongs, as well as some kind of writing on the handle. Looks like a seal.

It's quiet after that. You go to take a sip of your tea before someone phases into existence just behind the cushion, making you jump a little.

"Sorry, sorry. Didn't mean to be late, you know?"

"It's fine, ma'am. We weren't waiting long," you say after you recover.

"Good. Haru, thanks so much for your help."

"It's my pleasure, milady."

"Aw. You're really a good girl." She pats Haru on the head, and you can see her lean into it slightly. "What do you have to do later on?"

"My schedule is clear for now, milady. I planned on waiting outside for you."

"Mm-mm. Might as well stay here. You're got clearance anyways, and it'd be nice to let Minato know what's actually going on. Fine?"

"As you wish."

"Good, good. Well, it's really nice to meet you all. I'm glad you trusted me enough to reach out!"

The cheerful, smiling woman in front of you is the Hokage's wife. The host of the Nine-Tails. And one of the strongest people in the world.

She sits properly on the cushion, cross-legged. Her attire is fairly simple, an orange sundress with black tights underneath. Her face is rounded and she has light violet eyes. She has the same bright red hair as Yukari, though it's straight and even longer than than that. A black hairclip parts her hair to the left and helps frame her face.

"My name's Kushina Uzumaki, as you could have guessed. The Fourth Hokage's super awesome wife, you know? Hehe. And you're someone who looks like someone I know," she says while looking at you. "Sorry if I look at you weird, it's just that there are a lot of memories, you know?"

"I think I get it."

"Yeah. There's...a lot of meaning. We didn't just pass by each other," she says. "I want you to know what exactly happened on that night so long ago." Kushina takes a sip of her tea slowly before setting the cup back down. "Haru...room's secure, right?"

"Yes, milady. The extra layer has been added."

"Good. Alright." She lets out a breath. "Right, right. I didn't let you guys introduce yourselves! I'm sorry. Go ahead before we get serious, yeah?"

"Joshua West."

"Hannah Kuiper."

"Ritsu Tanaka."

"Joshua, Hannah, and Ritsu...so grandkiddo, Gold Reaper, and shorty. Okay, I'll remember those. Anyways...yeah. If it wasn't for your gramps, I wouldn't even be here. None of us would. Maybe if I sacrificed myself, Minato and Naruto would be okay. Or, God forbid...Naruto would be forced to carry the burden of being a host on his own. Imagining that...just makes my heart hurt. Even Minato having to be a host...could I imagine it, yeah. But it almost makes me cry thinking about it. Jake saved us all. He saved the village, he saved my life. He saved the world, even."

"What exactly did he do?" you ask, knowing the answer would be ridiculous.

"Beat the brakes off the Nine-Tailed Fox. That's what."

"B-buh?"

"Isn't...aren't the tailed beasts forces of nature? And unkillable?" Ritsu asks. "I...I don't want to say you're lying, Lady Kushina, ma'am...I just can't..."

Hannah nods. "I have to agree with Ritsu, at least somewhat. There are no-"

"There are jutsu. And he used one of them. Listen, that was a lot to drop on you at once. I'm gonna start from near the beginning of this mess and hopefully near the end all of this will make sense. Believe you me, it took me a real long time to realize that I wasn't dreaming or trapped in some wicked kinda genjutsu. What happened, it really happened, and Minato was there too, and even old man Hiruzen saw it happenin' on the outside. It was wild and crazy, all that. But you gotta believe me when I say that Jake West took down the grumpy old fox with his bare hands. Lemme start from the top, like I said. Trust me?"

"Yeah, we trust you. I just...never heard about that part before," you say with disbelief.

"It wasn't somethin' we wanted to tell anyone right away. You think they're jumpy now?" She makes a face. "Yeesh. Let 'em know about that and then get back to me, eh? Okay, so yeah. I dunno how it happened but someone came down to crash Naruto's birth and everything. Hiruzen's wife almost got killed, but Minato turned a few tricks and managed to save her as well as Naruto from being blown sky high. It was someone's master plan...they knew that the seal, the old seal I had weakened during childbirth and had to be stabilized by an outside force. Their aim all along was the tailed beast..."

"Do you know who it was?" Ritsu asked. "A betrayal?"

"Nope, nah. But I'm gettin' to it, really I am. Promise," she says excitedly. "Yeah, so. The seal's like super weak and stuff because the energy usually used to maintain it around that area is going to the baby. Naruto's always had a stomach on him, hehe. But yeah, the creeper chose that time to strike and Minato protected Naruto. I was like, freaking out, and then the guy does some sort of space-time warp thing and drags me out to some lake with rocks-"

You hold up your hands. "Lady Kushina, I'm sorry to interrupt-"

"Kushina's fine in private, ya know!"

"Kushina. You said...space-time migration," you say slowly. "This guy...was he wearing a mask?"

"Yeah, he was. Some kinda...dunno, war mask or somethin'. It was like flames going across, and one eye hole."

You feel your blood chill. Kushina looks at you before her eyes widen.

"Hey...don't tell me..."

"He came after me in Lightning Country, right after Hannah and I met up for a mission and left the Hidden Cloud. Talked about having clashing ideals with Gramps, wanting to change the world or something. And he called himself..."

"Madara Uchiha," Kushina finishes. "Minato said he called him out, and he didn't even deny it. He used his Sharingan to take control of the Nine-Tails and have it burst out of me while the seal was still super weak."

"I was going to ask how you survived, but I'm guessing it has to do with your lineage," Hannah says.

"Yup! Just like Granny Mito, I'm an Uzumaki to the core! We've got super strong life-force and junk, which is why I got selected to be the next host back when Whirlpool was still a thing. It was tough at first, thinking about being host to a monster. But thanks to Granny and Minato, I filled myself up with all kinds of love. That was enough to keep me going and to keep the grumpy fox sealed up. But that Sharingan made him real angry on that night, and he busted out. 'Course one of the first things that Madara guy had him do was try and kill me. Minato got to me in time and let me hold onto Naruto while he saved the village. He got a lot done in a short time, just like my hubby! Well...actually, there's one thing he takes his ti-"

Haru coughs audibly.

"O-oh, sorry. Yeah...I'll get back on topic. So I didn't get to see what was going on...I was just trying to calm Naruto down, and I was expecting to bite the big one at any moment, after having the fox ripped outta me. Minato fought Madara and severed his control over the fox. He got it out of the village and put it in the only place he could think of, our safe-house where I was with Naruto at the time. He got us out, and I decided to seal off the area with the Uzumaki standby, Adamantine Sealing Chains. Formed a barrier that kept bad stuff in, and others out, along with holding our foxy friend in place. So at this point, we gotta decide what to do."

Kushina holds a finger up and takes another sip of her cool tea. "Ah. Okay. So, we're deciding what to do. My first thought is that I'm about to die anyways, so might as well take the stupid fox with me. Minato, dummy that he was, told me I couldn't. We argued back and forth about it until he convinced me that...we weren't just a family. We were the family of the village, the Hokage's family. We were parents, but we were also shinobi. And as the Hokage, he also had to think about the village. He reasoned that Madara would appear in the future, and that me just dying would only leave the Nine-Tails to reappear somewhere else where Madara would capture it and use it to crush the Leaf for good. It would also distort the balance of power between the villages and make the Leaf even more vulnerable than it already was. The only option, the only real option, the one that would protect the village and the world itself...was to seal the fox inside of our newborn son."

She pauses a moment.

"We made the preparations. Minato was making the seals for Shiki Fuujin, somethin' that consumes your soul and that of your target once it's all said and done. And theeeeen...drama of dramas, he was on the last seal when someone popped in outta nowhere and stopped his hands from movin'. Shoulda seen him. Tall guy, dark skin like Joshua's there. Muscular, and he had some grey hairs on his beard and stuff, but he looked all slick and sophisticated. Well, maybe not exactly like that but he looked cool, had a dark cloak and everything. I'm kinda...too shocked to move or anything? He says 'no, not today, son' to Minato and I'm like 'eeeeee' cause he just saved his life and it was super badass. And then he's like, he'll take care of it and I don't do anything really. But I was shocked enough to screw up and have the chains loosen a little, which allowed old foxy to try and attack..."

"...and then my grandfather punched the Nine-Tails in the face?" you ask wryly.

"The most beautiful right hook I've ever seen in my life!" Kushina exclaims.

"Ha...hahaha...solid right hook...haha," you laugh nervously. "N-never fails...against chakra monsters...ha."

"Down goes the fox!" Kushina yells as she jumps to her feet. "Real dizzy, strugglin' to move. I snap into it and tighten the chains some more. Then your gramps asks for time while he makes some weird seals that I've never seen before and haven't seen since. And when I try to describe the jutsu he used, nobody knows what I'm talking about. Not even old man Hiruzen, and he knows every jutsu ever! That's why they call him The Professor, ya know! But anyways...hrm, lemme see...when he was done he clapped his hands and made his fingers go like this." She makes circles with her thumbs and index fingers, with the others extended upwards. "Like that, see. And then there were blue flames coming out his right hand, and red flames coming out his left. Then, the Nine-Tails started floating in the air. He was like this," she says, stretching her arms out to either side. "Like that. And then he started roaring all painful like...then he glowed red and split into two balls with fox faces on 'em. One was black and the other one was white. So Jake goes and has a weird container pop up from the ground. He puts the black fox ball in it and then the lid closes before it disappears. He still has his hand in the shape, so he comes over to me. And then he just asks Minato what seal he was gonna use, and Minato is like, still shocked right? But he blurts out the Eight Trigrams Sealing - that he learned from yours truly - and Jake is like, oh okay. So he just super casually shoves the white fox ball into me and then super casually makes two Four Symbols seals - that's how you do the Eight Trigrams Sealing, ya know - and has a neat space in between them so that the chakra can mix with mine, and the seal is also strong but not uncomfortable like the other thing I was doing. Also I totally wasn't dying anymore! I didn't think about it until later, 'cause Naruto was fidgeting and stuff and looked really cute."

She sighs and plops back into her seat. "So Jake gives us advice and wishes us well, and says he would try and take care of Madara on his end, and also that he was planning to change the ninja age forever. The next year we were lying on the ground after he beat us up. It was actually pretty fun! He didn't mean us any harm, just wanted to teach us about peace and understanding. And then after that...he wasn't around any more."

"I've never heard of a technique that can split a being into two parts," Hannah says with disbelief. "I mean, aside from getting over that someone could so casually punch a tailed beast in the face..."

"It was a...colourful story," Ritsu says. "But from what I can gather...Miss Kushina, that means that you have only half of the Nine-Tails inside of you, and the other is somewhere unknown."

"Yep, yep! All to keep it away from mean old Madara, and make things easier for me to manage! Half is way more than enough to scare off anyone who thinks they can rumble with us! That was what Jake told us. I could handle the full power of the Nine-Tails, but controlling it was a different story. Before I was just a container. Now? I'm a real big gun among big guns!"

"And you wouldn't know where he went, huh?" you ask.

"Nope. He even teleported off using another freaky jutsu, or something. Wish I knew where he was...we could have used him and his teachings, ya know. I think he was onto something...trying to get us to connect and understand. All of that."

"Miss Kushina...do you think that it's possible for people to physically connect to each other? Like...understanding by way of chakra?" Ritsu asks.

"Hmm..." She thinks a moment. "I mean, you can transmit illusions and nasty thoughts with genjutsu, and transfer chakra with medical arts and stuff. It's possible. I just wouldn't know how, and you probably need a certain type of chakra."

"I see. Thank you."

"No problem~! So yeah, that's the story of how Jacob West laid out an epic ass-whuppin' on the demon fox and saved us from certain death! So I've got a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings when I think about him, and when I look at Josh there. Hehe."

"Thanks for telling us all of this, Kushina. It's still crazy to me...to think he was that powerful, and then just disappeared. What could have happened to him?" you ask. "Is Madara really that powerful? I know he's not dead, just...I don't know what to think anymore."

"Yeah. It'll take some time to wrap your head around it. All I really know is that he wanted us to smarten up and everything. See, I remember stories about the Sage of Six Paths going around and spreading some kind of religion where he tried to get people to understand each other. But the legend goes that people eventually twisted his teachings and it led to war and suffering, just like before his time. I think Jake was trying to do something similar, just having us all connect with our fists first to like, resonate with our spirits. You know when two people fight, and they can kinda feel each other's emotions while fighting? That's happened before...hm! Maybe Ritsu is onto something, now that I think about it. Somethin' to explore in the future. For now, though...I think that's it," Kushina says, twirling her hair around her finger. "I wish I had some advice. Like good, solid advice. The world's twisting and turning, Madara is for sure out there plotting, and almost everyone's at odds. Hmm..."

She closes her eyes and thinks for a moment.

"Within the next week, there's gonna be an informal meeting of the Five Kage, to talk about what's been going on. An impromptu summit. Oh, and there's also been some weirdness going on. You're from Iron, right?"

"Yeah," you say. "Why do you ask?"

"I know that Iron Country is supposed to be neutral, but Minato and Hiruzen have been worried about guys from over there talking up the diplomats from other villages."

You blink. "Kushina...you're saying there are Iron Country people here? Anyone who looks like me?"

"Nope."

"This isn't good, then."

"Hm? Why?"

"My mom's the top diplomat for Iron," you reply. "If she's not supervising this, that means it's probably unauthorized. The country doesn't want anything to do with the squabbling going on, partially because it will cause chaos, and partially because it'll make them a target by making it look like they're choosing sides. Neither my mother or Governor-General Mifune wants that to happen."

"If I may speak, Master West."

"Oh. Haru, right? Go ahead. And you don't need to add the master on."

"Yes, Master West," she says with a nod. "The talks from what we've picked up have to do with raw materials such as iron, aluminum, copper, and related things. There have also been mentions of refined product. The location of Kennedy Port in particular, where I presume you originate from, makes it possible to ship to any location in a reasonable amount of time. The creation of new sea locks means that shipping by water has become even more efficient and lucrative. We have taken note of offers that are quite tempting to those involved, particularly the Hidden Sand which is relatively close by and has been struggling to afford equipment."

"If it seems like the Hidden Sand is getting help for arms building from the Iron, it'll look like they're reneging on their commitment to stay neutral. The Cloud will be the first to object, and loudly. But I'm certain that these deals are being made in secret," Hannah says. "Am I correct, Haru?"

"Yes, Mistress Kuiper."

"We are in trouble," you mutter. "Someone's trying to spark a war, and I don't think we have the means to stop that from happening on our own."

"If they wanted to blow the lid off this, they woulda done it already," Kushina says. "But I think we should find out exactly who these guys are and what they want. I'm thinking Madara's involved. It seems like a very...Madara thing to do. Like, he's super old and super wily. Right?"

"That's a fair observation," Ritsu says. "I'd like to investigate this closely, sir. Playing their game seems to be the best way of getting the information we need."

"If they're from the Iron Country, I'm certain they will recognize you," Hannah says to you. "We might also be able to use that to our advantage. If they're false actors, we will know right away from their reaction to your presence."

"Lots going on..."

"Take a breather before you do anything, yeah?" Kushina says. "Haru will bring you to the place I got ready earlier, it's just as nice as any hotel! I'm sure you'll love it, ya know. Once you wind down a bit, start planning for the next few days. Tournament's gonna start soon, and all. Haru will be your liason!"

"Whatever you wish, it will be done," Haru says with a nod.

Episode 3.6: Brave New World
"Let's get things set up. Ritsu, we'll go with your plan. Ready?" you ask her.

"Yes, sir. I have an idea of what I would like to do."

"Good. Hannah and I will take it easy for now. Nothing until we get some good data back."

"If that's all, you guys should get yourselves set up," Kushina says. "Haru will take you where you need to go. We'll see each other again soon, yeah? I'd have you join us in the good seats for the tournament, but we're stuck with stuffy old guys like Hyuuga who won't be too thrilled to see you around. Hrm."

"We'll be okay, Kushina."

"Hope so! Alright, I'll see you three later! Minato and Gramps will get a heads up, so you're safe!"

The tournament was almost a week away, and things inside of the Leaf were getting busier and busier. There would not be much time left to gather information as the tournament neared and security tightened. The meeting of the Five Kage would be on the weekend without question...

Ritsu stood in front of her mirror and brushed out her hair one last time. She had borrowed a black pencil skirt from Hannah and paired it with black stockings, visible through the slit on the skirt's right side. Heels won out over flats. She had scoured the equipment shops for something close to the colours of the Hot Springs, and found a old-style maroon combat vest. Pairing it with a white blouse would work.

Glasses with false lenses, and a little bit of shinobi cheating to change her eyes to a lighter green. Move some of the hair between the glasses. Tuck a bit behind the left ear. As for jewelery, simple things. Crystal earrings, studded of course. And a small, heart-shaped necklace, close to the chest and visible.

"I think I'm ready," she said as she turned around. Hannah nodded with approval and Joshua did the same.

"Two days to the summit," he said. "Let's try and cut through this mess."

"Yes, sir. I won't let you down."

"Not worried about that," he replied casually. Ritsu nodded back, feeling relaxed with that statement. It was odd...in the past few months, she had slowly adjusted to her new set of responsibilities. But something that kept standing out was how she was treated by her new family, Joshua especially. He did dote over her, in ways her father never did when he was able to. But at the same time, he respected her position as a member of the team, and her worth as a woman. It was the last part that was so striking and inspiring...and something she had never known before.

It was foreign to her how he could trust her to scout positions and put his life in her hands, then switch gears and smother her in affection while worrying about her safety. It was at odds with what little she knew of shinobi. It was at odds with what a life of survival and military action was supposed to be, from everything she knew.

Even on the edge of danger...she felt warm and safe like never before. He was everything. Hannah...things were lovely with Hannah, but so different. So much different. And somehow all of this was fine. It made sense, it fit together. It made her feel, finally, at peace.

Right. The mission.

"Everything okay?" Joshua asked.

"Fine, sir. Just thinking through some things."

"No worries. Heh, sounds like I'm never worried about anything sometimes, eh?" He shrugged. "When your mind works this quick and you're in a safe space, it's harder to panic."

"Perhaps I'll understand some day."

"You're on your way." Joshua stood up to rustle the hair on Ritsu's head. "For luck. Be safe out there."

"Yes, sir."

"Be sure to wake us upon your return." Hannah held her close for a hug. "And let my sentiments echo his. Be safe and come back to us."

"I will, ma'am. Thank you."

Hannah released her and smiled, opening the door. Ritsu grabbed her small bag along with her prepared scroll and headed out.

"Another warm evening..." The sun was only just starting to set. Ritsu carefully jogged through the maze of trees ahead of her temporary home and towards the village proper. She slowed as she reached one of the side roads and followed it out to the larger, busier street, mixing in with the crowds. She looked briefly at the monument to the Hokage, remembering the feeling of arrogance she was receiving from its existence. Something about watching over the village...nothing like that was needed. Some would paint it as an innocent, harmless thing. But delusions didn't often start with malice. What was it that the Kage believed? That they were justice? That they could provide order? That they alone were what preserved peace?

Hashirama thought a lot of himself. And after his death, nobody knew where to go with his grand ideals. He walked ahead, clearing the path with his own body. Yes, that was the ideal. The strength of someone called Hokage.

Not once did he think to provide those behind him with swords. They now stood in an endless cycle, waiting for someone strong enough, brave enough, worthy enough to clear the path filled with thorns with their own bodies...and each of those are called Hokage as well. And each of those move forward until they cannot any more, and appoint someone else to take up the mantle. And so it would go. So it would continue.

And the rich, carried upon their thrones by those in chains, live without a care in the world as they travel leisurely behind the pack.

An endless path towards what people called peace.

"None of this is the way."

Ritsu finally turned her head away from the monument and composed herself. She made her way down to the bar that Haru had identified for her earlier, an upscale establishment that some of the elite favoured. A glance at the bouncer set off no alarms; he gave her a casual glance in return and she continued inside.

Dimmed lights, sleek and rounded furniture. The bars were polished to perfection, and sharply dressed men made their rounds to check on guests every so often. The women were dressed in what could be called a professional manner, with tight leather skirts and dressy blouses that outlined their curves.

Ritsu scanned for her target. Found him. Sitting alone, waiting for his partner. She had about thirty minutes at most, which was perfect. That was enough time to work on him while she prepared to rope in the other one when he showed up. Someone relatively young, possibly new to the game. Easy enough to send out on odd, thankless jobs like this.

Good. She would use that to her advantage.

"Seat taken?" she asked as she walked up to his booth. He raised his head and blinked, nursing his drink.

"No, no. I'm just waiting for my partner, but there's enough room for all of us here." He tried to hide his excitement but it was already obvious. Hopelessly captivated already. Rookie. Not meant to deal with social experts. Or...hm. It could be that he was the honest one to draw attention. The Iron did have a talent for diplomacy and social disarmament. In any case, utterly defenseless.

Ritsu sighed audibly, set down her scroll on the table, and shook out her hair. "Thanks so much. It's been a long day, and I wanted someone to talk to. You looked cute and lonely, so I thought why not?"

"Oh. Glad you think so," the young man said with a smile. Nice and neat brown hair swept to the left a bit. Looked more natural than it was. Cute smile. Definitely on the young side from way his facial hair was and wasn't growing. Not built for fighting. Took care of his appearance, though it was accelerated by work needs. Nondescript, formal looking sweater and slacks.

He was a little inexperienced, seemed like. Demure types of girls. Typical encounters.

Be subtle and aggressive. A new experience that would draw him in.

"Heh, I know so," Ritsu said, continuing her approach. "Yuu Sanyo."

"Takumi Henson."

"I could tell you were mixed. Hm. Grandfather's side? Married a foreigner. Then your mom got married to one herself."

"Yeah! How'd you know? Aside from the name, of course."

"Faces and words give a lot away. 'Sides, you gotta be on the ball like that if you wanna do good business. Had a hunch about your family history, but that's all down to practice."

"You're here for business, too?" Takumi asked.

"Uh-huh. Trying to get myself a deal or contract, something before I go home. I'm out in the Hot Springs trying to pick up stuff for the construction projects we've got going...ah, they said some guys from the Iron were around, and I wanted to talk to them..."

"Really? I'm one of the guys you were looking for," he said proudly.

"Oh yeah? Mind if we get something started between us? It'd be awesome if we could strike up a deal, yeah? Here's what I'm looking for," she said as she opened up the scroll a bit. Takumi's eyes widened as he looked at the list.

"H-holy...that much?"

"And more...if you can manage it," Ritsu said with a grin. "Hold on, lemme get a drink in me first." She flagged down a waitress who took her orders. In her peripheral vision, she took note of Takumi's reactions; obviously excited, but a bit cautious. Thinking of his senior partner and how to approach that. Interested in her, wanting to spend time with her. A good two-for-one deal on his part. Hm. Time to pull some screws, ever so slowly.

"I'm guessing we have to get this by your partner?" Ritsu asked.

"Yeah, but it shouldn't be a big deal. Just looking at this should make him happy."

"Wondering what you guys are doing here, anyways. I mean, this is a big deal and all with the five countries coming together, just...I heard the Iron was supposed to stay real far away from any kind of drama," she said as she flipped her hair lightly.

"We got orders from a ranking member of council, and I can only guess that he got those orders from on high. Everyone knows we're here, so it's fine. Gist of our job is trying to make some deals."

"With everyone?"

"Trying to. Cloud's interested, so is Rock. Mist won't even talk to us, which...I don't really get it."

The Mizukage is being cautious, obviously. Seems there's a lot you don't know. "It happens," Ritsu said casually. "Can't go worrying about the ones that got away, you know? Besides, you've got me to focus on. I'm interesting enough, right?"

"R-right."

Off-balance. I'm on my way. "We think that importing from your country at those prices will do us good. Truth be told, it's not that we can't get it from the surrounding area, but the quantity is always a problem. Capacity issues...you know the drill, right?"

"Yeah, sure do."

"We're, uh...trying to keep the unsavory elements from getting restless. Know what I mean?"

"Ohh..." He nodded. "Yeah, I know. Our big boss deals with those types all the time. Keeps them in check and the country safe, Kennedy Port especially."

"Have I heard of him?" Ritsu asked.

"You should have. Luther Donovan, his family's a big deal at the Port."

"Can't say I know him. Sorry, I might be a little self-centered."

"Oh, no problem. It happens. Yeah, Lord Donovan is really good at what he does, and he sent us out to secure some deals for the Iron. A contract with one of the big nations would do us good. We talked about the potential of violating the policy we had in place, but it's supposed to be fine as long as we're not talking about war. I figure he's right. If we can't sell anything during peace time, when can we sell?"

"Makes sense, I guess." The senior partner or Donovan has been feeding this one lies for a while now. The Cloud is on a hair trigger, and giving them the means to make more arms faster isn't anywhere near a good idea. I'm not sure what they're trying to pull...does the Iron want a war to increase profits because they'll be safely out of it?

"Does it, though? I mean...I think I get the plan. Offer to everyone. The deals look real attractive, see? Then it starts a sort of bidding war where we're here and the shinobi villages are trying to keep our services out of the hands of everyone else. But at the same time, it might make us a target depending on who's angry enough. Lord Donovan said that the obvious solution is to have clauses disengaging us from any contract if war breaks out, so there's an incentive to stay out of trouble. And I mean, these are really good deals. Look at this one for instance to the Sand."

Takumi pulled out a small scroll and showed Ritsu the figures. She kept her face neutral and nodded while looking over the text in front of her.

All of that is unsustainable.

"Lord Donovan says we can take the hit for a while, it's about loyalty and customer satisfaction. We can rope the Sand in with weapons on the cheap, and then charge them a bit more after their economy gets a bump. Send them some raw material too, so that we're not completely flooding their markets. Cloud like I said is really interested, and we've got a good sea route to them. Rock will react to all of that going on, and then Leaf might be interested in doing some trading, too."

He moves his head to one side and waves to someone approaching. A slightly older gentleman walks up to the table, dressed in the same kind of non-descript clothing. Short black hair, a more serious-looking face than Takumi. Not as cute. Obviously married...but not completely considering his wife's feelings from the looks of it. Interesting. Middle aged, or close to it. Has his chest pumped up a bit.

An extended draw wasn't in the cards, though. Ritsu leafed through the possibilities in her head and ruled several out. Not enough time or space. And the risk of adverse affects was a bit too high for something so routine. No, best not to gamble here. Not yet.

"Hey. I'm guessing you're the big guy in charge here?"

He looked Ritsu over. "Hot Springs."

"Yup."

"Thought your kids already went home," he continued with a gruff tone. Obviously forced.

"I'm not much for combat, you know? And I have my own things to do. Cutting a few deals since we're pretty hungry for building material lately. I'm sure you know about that, eh?"

This one was a bit of a hot-shot. Thought he was on a higher level than he actually was. That could be fixed.

"A little. What brings you to us?" he asked.

"Oh, I was actually just hoping to meet you guys. Heard you were in town for a while, and from what else I heard, you had just what we needed. I was talking to your handsome partner here, he's been a darling. We've been going over deals, current situations, all that." Ritsu sipped at her beer while waiting for the man to respond. He sat down as Takumi slid over to make room.

"Evan Yamada."

"Nice meeting you. Yuu Sanyo," she said with a wink. "If you've never heard of me, don't worry. That's part of my job description. Do what I gotta, get out and go home. I'm good at that."

"You seem a bit too...charming to be forgotten so easily."

"All the boys say that. Though I can't say I get tired of hearing it. I'm sure your wife's a looker, too."

"Oh yeah, she's-"

"Henson."

"Sorry."

"Kid's eager, don't stifle him so much. We've been having a really good talk and I would reeeeeeally like to make a deal. I like him and his pitch, of course. However, I was wondering something..."

"What?" Yamada asked.

"It's more than a little risky being out here, trying to make moves in the middle of a tinderbox like this. The Great Shinobi Nations are practically at each others' throats, and you're in the middle of trying to get them supply deals in the middle of the biggest exam probably...ever. Sand gets knocked out of the game, you're in the wings offering them material support. Cloud goes down, you're ready to help arm them. Leaf has the biggest number of people in the tourney, but you want to help them get even stronger? Rock is perched up watching everything, you gonna help them with tools that'll extend their strategic advantage? But what's really suspect about all this..."

Ritsu leaned across the table, looking at both men curiously.

"Why's the Mist want no parts of this? I could ask one of 'em myself, but...mm, I don't know how you'd like that, me kind of going behind your back."

Yamada's eyes narrowed slightly while Takumi tried to suppress his panic.

"Mist has always been shady," the senior partner said.

"Shady doesn't mean shit when it comes to the economy. Rock and Cloud still trade. Leaf and Cloud still trade for fuck's sake. I'm not stupid, Evan. And when it comes to state to state bullshit, I'm not exactly safe from your meddling. You think Cloud won't roll through Hot Springs and Frost as part of their ground war?"

"It's a bit above your pay grade to worry about those sorts of things. We're not out to start a war."

Ritsu's eyes darkened as she leaned back into her seat. "The wheels of darkness are greased with good will, and the road to hell paved with good intentions. A good, good friend of mine told me that. Wouldn't you know...she wasn't wrong in the end."

"I don't quite understand," Takumi said.

"None of what she says is supposed to make sense," Yamada responded.

"I can guess that you've been doing deals under the radar. Keeping things from each country's leaders so that they wouldn't know what was really going on. You don't really care about avoiding war or conflict."

"Are you accusing us of trying to start another shinobi war?"

"Why would I say something like that? I was merely going to say that you wanted to jumpstart a new sort of economy and push product. Never mentioned anything about starting another shinobi war." Ritsu's eyes locked onto Yamada's. "But you? You look just a bit guilty. After all, I know what the Iron's top diplomat looks like, and her skin's just a touch darker than yours, buddy. So you can tell me what you're here for...or I can ask someone who does know. Your call."

"Yuu, don't tell me you're blackmailing us," Takumi said. Poor boy looked devastated. Ritsu found herself almost sorry for him.

"I'd never do anything like that, sweetheart. All I want is the truth, and I'll do whatever I have to in order to get it. I've got my own horse in this race."

Pile the pressure on. Make them sweat.

"Are you fool enough to think we'd tell you everything that was going on? I'm sure you have enough of a brain in there to realize we have secrets we need to keep."

"Brains, huh." Ritsu examined her fingernails and hummed for a moment. "You ever think about why you were picked to go on this little business trip? Never mind telling me your deep, dark secrets. I don't care what they are."

"Economic stability and regional manipulation for the betterment of all. Iron shouldn't be just isolationist even if it is a neutral party," Takumi said.

"Nice. You came up with that one yourself...after a bit of reading, of course. Tell me, hon...what do you know about the difference between risk and the nature of risk?"

"I'm not sure...what you're getting at."

"Mind games," Yamada snorted. "She's trying to say we've been sent on a mission that's way above our heads and that we're probably set up to fail."

"In the ballpark, I guess," Ritsu said with a sigh. "Too big for your boots, Evan. See, when you take on a risk, you don't know what exactly is lurking in there. Overcoming the fear that comes from taking risk is part of life, part of doing great things. All of us fine men and women have to confront fear, and all of us can overcome it. But why, then...why is it that some of us back off? Why can't we all surge ahead with the courage inside of us? It's because sometimes we recognize that the nature of fear is too volatile for us to handle. What's a common fear, you think? What's something you really don't want to happen if you fail?"

Takumi closed his eyes and thought. "I don't want others to get hurt."

"Aw, so cute. That's a good one, but not the answer I was looking for. Mister Yamada? Anything?"

Ritsu took note of the cold sweat forming on his brow. He sipped at his beer and seemed intent on dodging the question. She licked her lips before continuing.

"I think...the worst thing would be accomplishing nothing at all."

"How...how would..."

"Never considered it, huh. That you might have been sent here, not as bait, or even as a screen...that there was no purpose in sending you. That you were an empty gesture, a line with no hook on it. Not even a brick in the great structure of peace reaching to heaven. Just...nothing."

"Yuu, that's not-"

"Possible? Come, now. You're smarter than that," she said to Takumi. His hands were nervously shaking on the table. "What's your goal?"

"T-to...to broker..."

"No, no...tell me the truth."

"Henson, shut up. I think it's time we stopped these games, Miss Sanyo-"

"Why isn't Miss West here? Didn't you talk to her?"

"She wasn't-"

"Henson! Shut. Up."

"Oh, I see. She doesn't know. If I know about her, then the Mist has to, right? They didn't believe you were for real, right?" Ritsu smiled. "You've run into a bit of a problem. You're not supposed to be here. I told, you right? Doing it all for nothing...it's the worst."

"It has to mean something!" Takumi hissed.

"Takumi, shut up!"

"You can't just say it's for nothing. We're here in good faith, we're trying to build a new world by-"

"Making shady back room deals? Is that your justice?"

"It's more than that...it's..."

"Takumi. Let's go. Let's get out of here."

"You're wrong, Yuu. You'll see. We're going to make a change."

"Leaving so soon? No deal?" Ritsu asked with a pout.

"You can send someone else to the Iron with details if you're serious."

"Guess that means I'll see you in a few. I'm quite determined, you know..."

The two got up and left money for their drinks before leaving. Ritsu leaned back in her seat, crossing one leg over the other as she sipped on her beer.

"Luther Donovan, huh. Changing the world behind the Iron's back. That boy is so eager...why? Is there something else? Hmm..."

Haru had scoped out their hotel. Staying in separate rooms on the same floor, so that was deliciously convenient. Evan was trying to keep it together, but failing. Takumi...he was more than vulnerable. If he knew anything at all, she could pry it out of him with ease. That left the question as...follow the two fakers and mine one of them, or go home for some rest and report your findings in the morning?

Ritsu drummed her fingers lightly on the table as she thought. A sharply dressed man seated himself at the table and started talking; she nodded and responded with stock phrases while focusing on the more important task.

[] Go home and sleep. Ritsu thinks she should leave it at this and report her findings in the morning.

[] Head to the hotel. Yamada and Henson are in separate room. Makes it trivially easy to infiltrate. Tonight might be the perfect time.

-[] Focus on Henson. Seems he doesn't know too much, but what he does know can be taken easily. He's smitten.

Episode 3.7: Brave New World
Ritsu smiled and nodded along with the man at her table before casting a subtle genjutsu. She got up and lied about needing to use the bathroom, then set down her tip for the waitress coming by and headed out of the bar.

She took the long way to the hotel, assuming that Yamada would be paranoid enough to keep looking over his shoulder. That much was fine; she could easily make up a story about being put up at the same hotel and brush off everything else. But it probably wouldn't get that far. Her target was the junior partner, Takumi Henson. A good kid, but terribly naive and easily manipulated. She realized she was at risk of shaking him apart.

But then, he was only a tool in the end. She couldn't cry for him, nor did she want to. The pity...that was all too real, though. Poor dear. Poor, weak child. Was it fair to mock him? Yes. Her circumstances were different. She had the scars to prove it.

Ritsu entered the hotel lobby to see Yamada ascending in one of the elevators, while Takumi walked up a flight of stairs. Staying in separate rooms, with one going off on his own? Seemed like Yamada was up to something...oh, was that vibration from earlier ringing true? The kind of man who needed honey, no matter the pot. Could have been interesting playing with that aspect...

Well, Miss Hannah would think so. But there was a mission to complete. Focus.

"Takumi?" she called out. He turned around just as he was about to unlock his door. His eyes widened at the sight of the smaller woman.

"Yuu...? What...what are you..."

"We just happen to be at the same hotel. Crazy, huh? I was turning in after a few more drinks, when I spotted you and your captain. Where's he gone?"

"Upstairs. Something about a prospective client."

"A lady?"

"Yeah. How'd you guess?"

Ritsu stifled the urge to roll her eyes. "Call it a hunch. Ladies love their one on one time when it comes to business deals...does 'em wonders. Try and remember that for the future. Anyways...listen, I'm sorry about earlier. I just got a bit heated, you know?"

"It's different for you, I remember. Coming from a place that doesn't know conflict anymore...must be hard to think about war and fighting."

The Hot Springs is pacifist, not ignorant. You arrogant fucking-

"Just a bit. I've seen some fighting before, as part of field training - that's required for all of us out there. People getting hurt and even dying...shakes you up," Ritsu said with a hint of melancholy. "But yeah...I just wanted to apologize. And maybe ask if we could talk some more. I really think you're an interesting guy, Takumi. You've got a big heart."

"Y-Yuu...um, yeah. Sure. We can talk...you okay to drink some more?"

"You bet. Oh, your boss isn't gonna...?"

"The lieutenant said he wouldn't be back for the night, so I shouldn't wait up."

Of course not. Makes this even easier... "Alright. Just don't wanna get you in trouble."

"You're really thoughtful, Yuu."

"I try, you know."

Takumi smiled and opened the door, allowing Ritsu inside first. There was nothing special about the room; bed, table for work, eating, or both. An actual desk in the corner in case someone wanted to draft letters to send out, looked practically ancient. Bathroom tucked away in the back half.

"Got some wine," Takumi said. The two sat on the bed together, side by side.

"Thanks." Ritsu held up her glass and watched as it filled up. She swirled the dark red liquid around a few times and inhaled the aroma before taking a measured sip. "Nothing mind-blowing, but not bad either."

"Yeah. Apparently they have this stuff by the crate and give it out for free to guests."

"Didn't know they had that much on hand. I'll have to get an extra bag," Ritsu joked.

"Heh."

"So...I wanna know more about Takumi Henson. What's he like? What's he do?" she asked, prodding him gently.

"I'm from a port town in the Iron. It's called Kennedy Port...though everyone knows it for being the hometown of the Renegade."

"The...Renegade?" Ritsu repeated.

"That's what they call Jacob West now."

"Ah, okay. Didn't know that...I knew about him and all the stuff he did, but not that little detail. Interesting."

"Yeah. His family is still pretty well respected, somehow. Well, except for that criminal, his grandson."

Ritsu nodded and held her tongue.

"Lord Donovan never said exactly what it was that got him booted out, but it had to be something terrible. Wouldn't make sense otherwise. And he had designs on Catherine, the Kennedy Family's only daughter. Tch, only makes sense...could have a pick of any woman in town, young or old...but he wanted to have her. That guy used to be a fat loser," Takumi said absentmindedly. Ritsu quietly took another sip of wine. "Then out of nowhere, he transforms into this muscular strongman who can do anything he feels like. I was just a little insecure about it...yeah, I had great education at a private academy, good grades, a wealthy enough family...but he had everyone's attention. Then he does whatever stupid thing he did and gets booted out of town. But then, those people never learn not to be greedy."

"Those?" Ritsu asked, feeling she knew the answer.

"You know...them. They call them 'chocolate' or something-"

"You mean the kokoahito," Ritsu said.

"Yeah, those. My mom said they have a different name for them across the ocean. Can't use it in polite company."

"Yeah. I'll bet."

"But yeah...life in Kennedy Port should have been good enough. Instead they want to rock the boat. Even the criminal's family keeps trying to fight for him, like Secretary West. She's smart, and she's good at her job. Why not cut your losses, give up on the guy?"

"It's hard letting family go," Ritsu replied, trying not to be forceful. "Maybe after enough time...she'll learn to accept what's happened."

"I hope so. Lord Donovan worries about her too. Someone of her type shouldn't waste that kind of gift for diplomacy. I think so, too. I kinda like her."

"Yeah." She emptied her glass and grabbed the bottle to refill it on her own. Whatever opinion she had of Takumi before was close to demolished, in a faster manner than she could have guessed. She wondered if she had her expectations too high; being from a culturally diverse place didn't preclude you from being a bigot. Some things he was simply taught, but many others were learned and accepted on his own. All of it was rotten.

Did she have room to talk? Yes. Because she wasn't ignorant. And whatever individual things she was ignorant of, she strove to correct. Even in the midst of her own pain.

"I was getting off track, wasn't I? I mean...what I really want to do is help change the world. It's a big dream, I know. Not really specific either. But I think if I build on my skills, I can do it. Lord Donovan thinks so, which is why he sent me out with Evan. I get why you were upset and I don't hold it against you. It's kind of a risky plan...he said not to say too much, but I think you'll understand."

"You really think so?" she asked innocently.

"I do."

"Thanks...for trusting me. I'm willing to listen. And I won't give away your secrets, Takumi." She put her hand on his thigh. "Maybe I'll see things your way."

He blushed and nodded. "I don't know too much, but...the plan is to get them wrapped up in red tape. We've included clauses to buy us some time, and are dealing directly with the shinobi villages as opposed to going through the national government."

"Sounds risky to me. You were right."

"Yeah. It's like if we broker a deal with Cloud, we can include conditions in order to keep business up and conflict down. We have that leverage as a neutral territory and all - we don't want war, just to do business. And we keep doing that with whoever is interested. We wanted to be visible, to be approached by everyone, and to keep things separate."

"Why keep this away from your head diplomat?" Ritsu asked. "I would think that her expertise you talked about so much would be a great asset, and it would give you instant credibility as far as deal-making was concerned."

"She's...the word used was uppity."

Ritsu stifled a sigh. "A tough customer, you mean."

"It's in a...well..."

"You mean to say it's a trait of those people."

"Yeah, that's it. You understand, right?"

"..." She took another sip of wine to try and cool down. "I can't say that I really relate."

"Oh. Well, yeah, that's the reason Evan and Lord Donovan gave. I get it, though. I think she really would help, but we were doing something complex that Lord Donovan said he would personally explain to her."

"Has he?"

"We haven't heard back yet. I think all we're meant to do at this point is forge ahead and get to the point where Lord Donovan can finish the job for us. We just have to lay down the foundation. And it's not a thankless job, either! My family got a bunch of financial assistance along with my own pay hike for this mission. Really cool, isn't it? We're gonna go down as legends once this works out."

"You seem so sure about this."

"I am sure. It's not just me and Evan, we've got a whole country backing us up. We're not alone. And the people of this place and every other will be thankful for our effort. Making our way towards peace isn't easy, and this will only be the first step, but it's a step we'll definitely make. It will all mean something."

"..."

Ritsu looked into his eyes, filled with misplaced confidence. Everything about it was wrong. Every angle, every view, every feeling. A monument to arrogance. This insecure child had been picked out of many, many others to lead this crusade for an uncertain peace. Brainwashed? Manipulated? No...he wanted this. The insecurity, the nationalism, the supposed superiority of he and his 'people'. He saw Luther Donovan as some kind of messiah, someone who would save the world from itself.

But in the end, she knew he was just a pawn. His fate was so scrambled and unknown, but there were markers tripped at every point, and they suggested something horrific. Could she stop it? No. Did she want to?

The pity was kicking in.

"Takumi. Listen, I get it. I understand you, you know? I just...I wanted to ask something."

"What is it?"

"What do you really believe in?" Ritsu waited for the answer.

It came in too fast.

"Justice. That's what I believe in."

There was a small pain inside of her that immediately started to fade. So that was it, then. Nothingness. Perhaps well deserved, according to the will of the cosmos.

"I can see it in your eyes. That's...a fair answer."

"Maybe...man, it's crazy to ask, but maybe one day you could join us. All I'd have to do is talk with Lord Donovan. Someone as smart and...as pretty as you, he couldn't think of turning down."

"Thank you so much for that. But I can't. We...walk different paths. Ones that may never meet again. That's why I'll cherish this experience. Thank you for opening up to me, Takumi. I'll remember this."

Ritsu set down her glass on the nightstand and got up.

"Just...think about what you're doing. Think about the future. If I don't see you around, take care of yourself."

"You too. Yuu...listen, before you go..."

"..."

"Don't...go too far. We will see each other again, and I know that I can make you happy. I really will."

She gave him an unreadable smile before opening the door and leaving.

"Bye, Takumi."

The door clicked shut behind Ritsu. She let out a breath and stared at the carpeted floor for a moment before leaving.

"So that was all there was. A hollow shell. I wonder what your purpose is supposed to be, Takumi Henson. I wonder...just how violently you'll be erased."

The morning came and went. You let Ritsu sleep in and Hannah went walking around town with a partial disguise and an ANBU escort. She was due back any minute.

Haru is dressed in her usual attire, fox mask and all, as she cooks a late lunch for the three of you. You got a glimpse of her face at one point, and it was strikingly beautiful. She doesn't know, which is probably for the better seeing how shy she is.

"I cooked a familiar Western-style breakfast in place of your lunch meal. It should meet your caloric needs, as well as being flavourful and delicious," she says, politely as ever. "Will you be waiting for the others?"

"Yeah. No rush, right?"

"None whatsoever, Master West. I will keep your food warm for the time being. Would you like a hot drink?"

"Yeah. Whatever you think is good, Haru."

"Understood. I will brew a herbal tea that Lady Kushina enjoys. Please wait."

"No problem." You hear a yawn as someone else enters the kitchen. "Morning, ninja girl. Feeling okay?"

"Fine, sir. Thank you for asking. I hope you weren't up too late last night waiting."

"Hannah had me turn in early. Insisted, really," you say. "She waited it out on her own before going to bed."

"She's only trying to look after you, sir."

"Yeah. Just not used to being doted on so much, outside of my mom anyways."

"I understand." Ritsu takes a seat at the round table beside you. Haru sets down two warm mugs in front of you both. "Thank you, Haru. Good morning, and thank you very much for your help."

She nods. "I am pleased I could assist you, Madam Tanaka. I trust your mission went well."

"It did. I would like to wait for Miss Hannah before we begin."

"Understood. If I might brew myself a cup of tea before joining you. I have already consumed the requisite sustenance for daily operation, Master West."

"Go for it."

"Understood. I thank you," Haru says with a bow. She goes to make her tea and you sip on your own as you wait. It's really good...mix of different flavours. You can taste a couple of different berries, some mint in there too, tucked in subtly. Refreshing.

You hear the patterned knock on the front door before Haru goes to open it. There's a short conversation between her and the other ANBU as Hannah strolls into the kitchen, wearing a sky blue dress that floats along with her movements. She gives you and Ritsu pecks on the forehead before settling into her seat.

Haru promptly serves your late brunch, you say grace, and then dig in. Your friendly ANBU escort then takes her tea and sits across from you at the other end of the table silently.

"Whatever is discussed will not be released to other parties unless authorized by Master West," she finally says. "These are orders given to me by Lady Kushina, with the backing of Lord Hokage and the Honoured Third, Lord Sarutobi."

"She did say that she was going to get the God of Shinobi himself involved," you muse out loud.

"Yes. It only makes sense...the sheer finesse and staying power of his diplomacy is the stuff of legend," Hannah says as she dabs her mouth with a napkin. "Ritsu, it would do you well to study some of the conflicts he's resolved. There are books for purchase, but also transcripts within the Leaf Central Library."

"I see. I'll be sure to do that, Miss Hannah."

"If you would like me to secure reading material on your behalf, this can also be arranged. I am cleared for several levels of access."

"Thank you, Haru. I would like that," Ritsu says with a nod.

"Understood. I will obtain relevant selections upon conclusion of this meeting. Please forgive our interruptions, Master West. You may begin when you are ready."

"Cool. So, Ritsu...let's hear what you picked up last night. Nothing unsavory?"

"I considered a seduction offensive, but nothing came to that level, no. The diplomats identified are both of the Iron Country, from Kennedy Port. Second Lieutenant Takumi Henson and First Lieutenant Evan Yamada."

"Don't know 'em," you reply. "Wonder if I should, but nothing comes to mind. Probably upper crust guys."

"Correct. Both attended private academies before joining the military. Their families are well off, and both are of mixed heritage as you can infer. Henson...recalled you. Vividly."

You raise an eyebrow and Ritsu takes it as a sign to continue.

"He noted your change from, quote, 'a fat loser', end quote, to, quote, 'a muscular strongman', end quote. You apparently had your pick of human females within the vicinity of Kennedy Port."

"Naturally," Hannah quips.

"You, quiet."

She pouts at you and signals Ritsu to continue.

"He has a severe inferiority complex and believes that you had designs on Catherine Kennedy. This is Miss Cadence that you told me about earlier, if I'm right."

"Yeah. Her story is...complicated. But we were really close," you say. "So this guy has some kind of complex about me? Weird, but...I dunno what to think, actually."

"He came across initially as a kind, naive young man. Beneath the surface, he's very clearly a bigot. Using terms such as you people, he reduced you to an object and a savage."

"It's cool. I mean, it's not cool but I'm used to it. Comes with the territory around there, people immigrating all the time from across the sea...carrying some bad habits that should have been buried in the past. Sometimes you can't earn respect no matter what you do. Grams told me that a long time ago."

"But...but you..."

"I know, Ritsu. It must have been hard listening to it all. Don't worry too much about it. Things'll change one day, yeah?"

"...right."

"And we'll be the one to change 'em," you say with a reassuring smile. She nods and smiles back.

"Yes, sir. Getting back to my analysis...it is because of these traits that Henson was selected along with Yamada on this mission to the Leaf during the examinations. According to Henson, the aim is to make various deals with nations, wrapping them up in rules and regulations and preventing as much conflict as possible while making economic inroads."

"They couldn't believe in something so stupid," Hannah says dismissively. "And even if they did, it has to be a cover for something else."

"Henson is fully invested and committed to this ideal. Yamada...I assume he's of the same disposition, even if he's distracted himself with carnal desires. They weren't sent by the foreign minster or the governor-general. Their superior is supposed to make contact and explain things to them."

"Who's their CO?"

"One of the lords of the Iron, Luther Donovan."

"What?!" you yell, slamming your hand on the table. The plates jump into the air briefly and everyone reflexively catches theirs, setting them down slowly. "Shit, sorry. I just...what...?"

"Sir, you're...very distressed. This Luther Donovan I can guess has great influence, but..."

"Donovan is so deep in the dark world he might as well have horns growing out of his forehead. What the hell is he doing, and how did he...? Okay, I gotta explain. He's been a damn menace for the longest time, and if my mom knew he was involved...I don't want to imagine how pissed she would be. Luther Donovan is a big mover and shaker, yeah. His family has been tight with the Kennedys since near the founding of the Port. He tried to manipulate an alliance between the two families by having his son start a relationship with Cadence. And...nobody knows for sure what happened, but it ended up in that tragedy. He feigned innocence, but I know he was behind what happened."

"I'm sorry, sir...I don't follow," Ritsu said.

"Cadence had an unplanned child, as you might recall hearing," Hannah says soberly. "To put it simply...the child, Aria, is now five years old. Cadence...is seventeen."

Ritsu looks at her in horror.

"You understand, then. It is...difficult to imagine what she must have gone through. Not even a teenager then, and...I digress. Please continue, Joshua."

You take a deep breath and follow it with a sip of tea before speaking again.

"There were a bunch of so-called transactions in order to erase what happened from public and private record, including all of the other things that went on behind the scenes. We don't know exactly what happened to Cadence during that time, but it made her physically different in a way that people are still trying to figure out. Anyways...unfortunately, ruining her life isn't the only thing he's done," you continue. "He's been pulling strings in the government and on the samurai council to get the country more active in the affairs of the shinobi world. He's publicly rejected, but there are enough sympathetic elements underneath that to give him a foothold...now he's got two goons inside the village with the Five Kage. No way he's not planning something disgusting."

"There have been attempts at several contracts, keeping vital information hidden from each of the other villages," Ritsu explains. There has been a block, though: the Hidden Mist has refused to hear any proposals whatsoever on orders from the Mizukage."

"Mei Terumi, then. Playing it smart on her side, she must have sensed something was up," you say. "That'll probably make her a target for whatever the next phase of their plan is."

"It's predictable enough," Ritsu continues. "They're going to make it look like she was the one being underhanded. The other option is to bring harm to her person."

"Donovan probably has those chumps on strings, so it's not out of the question. And there's the fact that he'd leave no direct trail back to himself. Like I said, he's really good at working from the shadows."

"Joshua. Do you remember what Kushina said the other day?" Hannah asks. "She said it was 'very Madara' how this was playing out."

"Oh, hell. What makes you think he's involved in all this?" you ask.

"Nothing concrete, to be sure. But I could see him trying to manipulate countries into war so that their strength would become depleted and their hold on the tailed beasts compromised. We heard about what he did with the Nine-Tailed Fox, so there's nothing to say that he couldn't do similar things with the others, if only on a smaller scale. It's likely he's also making extensive use of Akatsuki and its stable of S-Class criminals."

"Yeah, there's every possibility of them taking advantage of the chaos and trying to roll a shinobi village while its defenses are lowered. That's if it even is him, but it could be more likely than not...Donovan has a lot of connections to the underground. We're all the way across the continent, so we can't punt him directly, and these two useful idiots probably don't mean a damn thing to him. We need to figure out what they're gonna do."

"What can we do as we are, sir? We're not yet identified within the village by the other shinobi countries, and the summit is supposed to be tomorrow. Everyone getting together could be either good or bad...we don't know. I wonder about last night and whether I should have gone after Yamada instead...but I also can't doubt myself. What's done is done," Ritsu says.

"Atta girl. We gotta move forward, especially now," you say. "There's a lot that could go wrong. Haru, what do you think?"

"My thoughts are that it would be unwise to cause disruption on your own before or during the summit," she says. "If I might relay the information gathered here to Lord Hokage - with your explicit permission - he would be able to quickly formulate multiple contingencies in case of violence, disruption, or both. It is an informal meeting and tensions will already be running high. Having someone like the Raikage discover your existence will possibly alter the course of the entire exam period. Something like that could escalate into a catastrophic event in the future. My personal assessment of Yamada and Henson leads me to believe that they will not take any action until after the examinations have already begun, which means after the impromptu Five Kage Summit. In the meantime, if Madam Tanaka would like to conduct more extensive operations, she could do so without worry. Please note that these are my personal assessments on the current situation. There may be inaccuracies, and I apologize in advance for them."

"Well. That was a mouthful," Hannah says.

"Yeah. That's...a pretty good look at it. Ritsu?" you ask.

"I see no problems with what Haru has observed. I say we follow her advice and keep the pressure on. I can escalate my offensive on Henson, or Yamada if we want to gain as much information as possible," she says.

"We want to keep a low profile. Staying out of it and watching the tournament for now sounds good. Though...we have other options. Instead of tip-toeing carefully, we can just as easily take them and do a slightly uncomfortable round of interrogations," Hannah says with a sly smile.

"That didn't sound too sincere."

"Oh, posh. I would only treat them with care. We can't have them linking anything to us, hm?"

"That is an option we can consider. Genjutsu is easy enough to apply so we can force secrets out," Ritsu follows. "The downside is alerting them or someone else to trouble. Killing them is possible but leaves us in a bad position, and we don't know what Donovan has in play. They would also be on alert if we capture them and let them go, which makes them unpredictable at best. Anything to saddle the Leaf with political problems is out as well."

"Hrm." You take a sip of your tea and lick your lips briefly. "Gotta go with something."

[] Haru's plan. Keep things quiet until the summit is over and have Ritsu go out again later to mine more information from the two Iron lackeys.
-[] Target Takumi again. He's likely to crumble at this point.
--[] Straight interrogation.
--[] Breakdown veiled as casual talk.
--[] Seduction campaign.

[] Hannah's plan. Equal parts risky and rewarding, dependent on execution. Decisions on the fates of Yamada and Henson will have to happen on the spot.
-[] Solo. One person can capture them both, either one at a time or simultaneously, then start the interrogation.
-[] Partner. Two people together. Keeps things safe.
-[] Team. Offers maximum security if things are done right.

[] Joshua's plan. Direct confrontation. Henson's inferiority complex is a strong tool to use against him, and he's sure not to be a match in combat. The problem is that there's no telling what he or Yamada might do when physically backed into a corner.
-[] Solo. You are a shinobi, more than a match for both of them.
-[] Partner. Two people together. Keeps things from getting out of hand.

E3 Interlude: The Officially Unofficial Five Kage Summit
"It's about damned time..."

"Lord Raikage, please. It won't do to make things unnecessarily hostile."

The Fourth Raikage snorted in response to his aide. She sighed and brushed back a silvery strand of hair as their group entered the meeting room.

It was a thing of beauty. Soft chairs with high backs, made of exquisite material. Three for the members of each group, with the five closest to the middle having distinguishing patterns for each of the Kage. A mahogany table, big and formed in the traditional pentagon shape that had been used for every Summit since the beginning. The table surface was polished to a shine. Marble floors and pillars going up to the ceiling. Scrolls and paintings on the walls, with air-cleaning plants placed strategically. The room was filled with bright light, no windows or openings that could be taken advantage of. The Leaf ANBU stood at attention in the corners of the room, a smaller space than usual for a Kage meeting, but not so small as to create misunderstandings or reduce fighting effectiveness.

The Raikage went in first, past the ANBU who had wisely stationed themselves a distance away from the door in order to avoid any misunderstandings. Following him was his personal assistant Mabui, a silver-haired, dark-skinned woman who carried a lot more technical weight than she projected. Their last member was Darui, who had an afro of white hair that immediately made him stand out. His expression looked bored and uninterested, eyes heavy-lidded. His walk, slow and seemingly unconcerned as he had his hands in his pockets. There was a tattoo on one of his shoulders, in bold black ink that stood out brightly even against his skin. He had the arms of a carefully trained swordsman, muscular, but not so carried away as to hinder important movements. He wore the standard Cloud uniform, a contrast of black pants and white armor, and had a massive blade that resembled a meat cleaver as his back.

His superior was a mountain of a man like his father before him, bulky with rippling muscles and a strong physique that he showed off often by way of his opened robes. The elaborately shaped and crafted gold belt on his waist just added to the entire package, along with the big golden bracelets coiled around his upper arms. A, named the same as his father, who was named the same as his predecessor, and his predecessor, had a stern face. His hair was white and combed backwards, there was a goatee and a moustache of the same colour as his facial hair. He removed his hat and placed it on the table before sitting in his designated seat. Mabui and Darui followed suit on either side, Darui placing his sword across the arms of his chair.

A didn't move his head as the next person came in. The proverbial thorn in his side, a man whose small stature and advanced age showed nothing of his tenacity and destructive capability. This was Oonoki, the Third Tsuchikage.

He said nothing and took his seat beside A, intending to needle him from close range whenever possible. The Tsuchikage had already lost most of his white hair, having his remaining real estate pulled into a topknot at the back of his head and secured with a yellow ribbon. He had a large moustache that angled downwards, and a long goatee with thick eyebrows. His most defining feature was his nose; big, reddened, and dotted with markings on the front. The bright red collar of his coat contrasted with rest of its its drab green composition, yellow highlights running along the edges.

"Well, long time no see, A. I was wondering when we would get to have a casual chat," Oonoki said with a smug smile as he sat down. His hat went on the table in front of him.

"I'm sure you were excited at the prospect of being able to snipe at me without repercussion. You should enjoy it while it lasts."

"Sir," Mabui interrupted.

"Mabui, don't. I'm the one in charge here, and I don't think the Tsuchikage will have to worry about me doing anything to him...unless he chooses to do something he'll regret."

"He's right, girl. His threats are mostly empty here."

"And don't call her 'girl'."

"I couldn't think of anything else to describe someone who's a mere child compared to the rest of us."

Mabui narrowed her eyes, keeping her gaze fixed to the far wall, but said nothing.

"Just watch your tongue, Oonoki."

"I'll do my best," he said with another smile. The two people with him took their seats at his signal. The first was his son Kitsuchi, a highly respected commander with a mastery of Earth Release techniques. Like his father, his nose was big and round, though coloured like the rest of his face, which had a full beard going around it. Unlike his father, he was a tall man, even taller than the Raikage, though not nearly as muscular. He wore a red bandana over his head with the Rock forehead attached to the front of it.

His partner was Akatsuchi, a man of comparable height and even bigger size. His plump face and laid-back attitude made him look happy to be there, and indeed he was. He wore his forehead protector in the same manner as Kitsuchi, the red matching the rest of his uniform which was stylized with a yellow scarf around his neck.

"Really brought in the muscle this time, huh," A remarked. "Earth Release won't save you against me."

"I really do take offense to these threats," Oonoki said nonchalantly.

"You don't sound like it."

Mabui sighed quietly and took notes. While she did so, the next group arrived.

The Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, looked as if he hadn't slept in months. However, he had in fact slept relatively well while in the Leaf - this was his default appearance. His face was stern yet wearied, dark eyes critically scanning the room and its inhabitants. His auburn hair was short and looked to be on the wilder side, there were creases around his mouth. He wore the green robes of the Kazekage's office along with his hat; the robes looked loose on him for some reason. He practically trudged towards his seat to the right of the Raikage and sat in it slowly.

"Lord Raikage, Lord Tsuchikage...afternoon to you," he said wearily.

"Bad night, Kazekage?" the Raikage asked.

"Nothing of the sort...I merely sense bad times ahead."

"There's no need to be so negative, sir. Things will work out."

"Hrm." He waved one of his two bodyguards away, making her frown. The woman in question was one of the Sand's greatest heroes, an accomplished warrior who also had a knack for diplomatic relations. Her name was Pakura, a jounin of the village with uniquely twin-toned hair; a green bun at the top, which went down and bled into long strands of orange hair that framed both sides of her face. The Sand headband was around her head, and her expression was appropriately serious without being harsh. Her outfit was relatively relaxed for the meeting; a sleeveless, backless black dress, paired with purple compression sleeves.

"Leave him be, Pakura. We can't make him comfortable in this kind of atmosphere."

"Lady Chiyo, I think it's important to have some kind of spirit," she whispered to the much older woman. "He looks like a dead fish."

"That's not any different from the rest of the year. Nyahahahaha!"

"Chiyo-baa, please..."

Pakura sighed and got into her seat as her elder chuckled away. Convinced to come out of retirement, if only briefly, Chiyo, even in her advanced age, was one of the Hidden Sand's strongest warriors as well as a living legend; an exceptional puppet user that once led the Puppet Brigade, and a sterling medical ninja who went head to head with the likes of the Slug Princess, Tsunade. She wore plain brown robes over her small frame, complemented with a white scarf and maroon hat to cover her head. She sported a very wrinkled, yet lively face. In recent years, her eyesight had slightly diminished.

"Good mix of faces we have here today," Chiyo said out loud. "Young and old, coming together for the greater good."

"Hmph. We'll see how much good comes out of this farce once I'm through," the Raikage replied.

"Sir, please..."

"He's already up and going, Mabui. No point in trying..."

"Not you too," she hissed at Darui. "There's going to be an actual fight with actual ninjutsu if your boss doesn't actually stop antagonizing the entire room. Is that what you want?"

He gave her a look. "Remember I told you this was probably the worst idea, and you should have made up an excuse for us to blow it off?"

"We can't just skip international relations."

Darui raised his hands in surrender. "See? I tried. Let's just pray to whatever god you want that we make it through this in one piece."

Mabui cursed at him under her breath as she went back to taking notes.

Next to enter the room was the Mizukage, Mei Terumi. Her long auburn hair went all the way down to her ankles, and was secured in a knot at the top by a blue band. Part of her hair crossed over one of her green eyes on the right, the visible one quickly taking in the majesty of the meeting room before settling on the other Kage. Her dark blue dress showed off her bare shoulders, complemented by heeled boots that came up to her knees and fishnet stockings. A white scarf was wrapped around her neck, floating slightly behind her as she moved.

Mei set her hat down and took her seat to the right of the Kazekage, giving him a polite nod that he didn't return.

"Pleasant day to everyone. I hope we can build on a few things with this meeting," she said.

"Making everyone guess at your sincerity is a nice trick," Oonoki quipped. Mei's expression didn't change, even as she noted the bullying tactics already beginning. She wasn't yet...that age...and even if she was, she would still be the youngest person in the room. Unfortunately for her, while she enjoyed the feeling of youth, it wasn't much of an asset on the world stage by itself. But maybe a fresh perspective would help make things better. She could only hope.

"No need to bully her," Chiyo said. "And Lord Kazekage, be nice."

"Is that a joke? It's hard to be civil with someone who has their village leaking criminals the rest of us have to deal with."

Mei ignored Rasa and signaled her two escorts to sit. The first was a man with a peak of blue hair on his head, a black eyepatch over his right eye, and two earrings with what looked to be sealing tags on them. His visible blue eye stared down the Kazekage for a moment before returning to the rest of the room. A dark blue haori went over his grey combat suit, and he smoothed out the former before finally taking his seat. He was Ao, a sensor type shinobi and naturally, an elite of the village who was handpicked by the Mizukage once the revolution was successful.

The second was a woman with a visor going over her eyes, tinted enough so that they were obscured. Her platinum blonde hair was short, only going down to her chin. The village head protector was wrapped safely around her neck like a choker, and the rest of her attire consisted of a blue pinstriped sweater with black cargo shorts. A large, circular shield rested on her back.

"Blues. It's okay."

"Understood, Lady Mizukage. I apologize." She bowed deeply before sitting down, putting her arm through two straps on the underside of the shield, and holding it nearby just in case. Her head tilted towards Darui briefly, who noted her and glanced back. There was no exchange as they went back to their earlier activities.

"Well, here we are. Finally time to get started, eh?"

A cheerful voice rang out as the last member of the Five Kage arrived. His smile was as brilliant as ever, matching the brightness of his messy blonde hair. The bright blue eyes that could harden at any moment were looking at the other village heads with expectation and hope. The slim build underneath his flashy robe, the characters for Fourth Hokage writ large on its back, was no indication of the strength he possessed in battle, nor the absolute skill he used to demoralize and demolish entire companies of shinobi at once.

Minato Namikaze, the Yellow Flash. Fastest man in history, according to the records everyone knew. Legendary hero of the Hidden Leaf. Author of the Miracle at Kannabi - an event where he led a depleted party of four against fifty Rock shinobi...and obliterated them. This, among other things like defending the village against the Nine-Tails and limiting its destruction, was the reason he was both respected and feared throughout the shinobi world.

But his cheer wasn't anything close to an act. To what some thought was his detriment, he spent a lot of time being honest and approachable, much like his mentor and predecessor who entered the room after him.

Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage and author of numerous treaties and pacts to make the world as peaceful as it had ever been following the Third War. His kindness and compassion were matched by his legend in battle. Called the Professor for his knowledge of Leaf jutsu and technique, and known to all as the God of Shinobi for his absolute dominance on the battlefield during his prime. Though age had likely diminished his skill, nobody was willing to chance that it was enough to avoid annhilation. The most respected figure in the shinobi world looked as he usually did, with red and white robes that covered his short frame, a head of short and spiky white hair, the famous goatee, and the expected wrinkles and liver spots that came with old age on his face. Even so, he was still seen as handsome by the women, which he...tended to take advantage of. Only those from the Leaf knew the extent of that, and there had been measures taken to ensure it stayed that way.

Following him was the last member before the room was closed off. One of the world's brightest and sharpest minds, and the Leaf's Jounin Commander, Shikaku Nara. He wore the standard Leaf attire, his flak jacket a deep green. Two large scars crossed the right side of his face, and his black hair was tied up into a spiky ponytail, a staple of the Nara clan for what seemed like generations. He had two small yet important earrings, and a neatly pointed goatee. A single sweep of the room told him everything he needed to know, and he would be reading the meeting as it went on.

"This is already going to be a mess. Lord Sarutobi..."

"Yes, my child."

"Eyes above the chest..."

"..." The old man coughed into his hand before taking his seat. Shikaku said a silent prayer and sighed before doing the same.

"It's a weekend afternoon and nothing's really going on. If it gets too late, I'm sure my wife will barge in and ask if we want dinner!" Minato laughed. "So we'll get started now. First of all, welcome again to the Leaf. Hopefully your stay's been alright and you're enjoying the festivities. Things are set to ramp up with the tournament, so that'll be exciting. Plus my son's in it! I wouldn't have a choice on watching even if I wasn't Hokage, you know?"

"Cut the banter, Hokage."

"Hm. Not enough sleep, Kazekage?" he asked with a smile. "Well, that's okay. If you insist on it, we'll-"

"Pardon me, but I don't think that's the right way to raise an objection. The Hokage is trying to be hospitable," Mei said. "It's fine if you want to give me the cold shoulder, but I think you should show some respect for not only your fellow Kage, but the host of the Chuunin Exams and of this impromptu summit. Heaven knows we could have just left things to simmer, but we're here."

"Are you trying to tell me what to do, little girl? Listen-"

"No. I won't listen, and I won't be pushed around like this. I don't give a damn who you are or how long you've been doing this. You, the overlord of a failed experiment, trying to lecture me, who nearly drowned in blood saving her country. Don't you dare push your luck."

"Easy! Easy, now! Please, let's just calm down." Minato sighed and raised his hands. "Listen. If you guys want me to be the hard man moderator, I can very easily do that. But that's not what I want. I want us to have free and open discussions like I know we can. We are all adults here, young and old. We have a variety of experts, of experiences, and of ideas. Notice how not all of us here are enforcers like usual? I wanted to give this a try because we're getting close to war and all the bad stuff that comes with it. I'm not going to babysit you guys, but I will put you in your place if need be. The Mizukage is right, that's no way to start us off. I apologize for letting it go in the first place. So let's start properly, alright?"

Rasa shrugged.

"I guess we can take that as a yes," Mei said with annoyance. "You have my support as well."

"Great. Okay, let's start with a topic people are concerned about. Kazekage, how about you go first since you're kinda fired up today."

Rasa raised a brow at Minato. "If you want a problem, I'll give you one. Your village has been tanking mine by robbing it of vital missions. The Leaf has more than enough will to get missions wherever and whenever they want. But you're intent on screwing us."

"Great! Awesome! That's a productive answer!"

"I-is it really?" Mei asked nervously.

"Sure! The first reply to that anyone would give out is to just suck less, ya know?"

"Lord Hokage, if I might..."

"I wasn't really done, Miss Pakura. Sorry."

"Oh, I see. My apologies, Lord Hokage."

"No worries. So yeah, as I was saying. 'Suck less' is the usual line, just with way better language. Typically, we're not responsible for your village's inability to secure missions and funding. But I don't want things to be like that, Kazekage. Now...I don't know what exactly we can do short of turning down missions, but that's not something we can just do. I have a responsibility to the village, and to the people of this country. Honestly? I don't have a good reason to turn down missions, even if they're from Wind Country. We have different uses for them and I'm not responsible for your country's economy. Raising mission prices might help, but how much until customers decide to go back to you? How many people are suddenly priced out of services in Fire Country? What do I say to the Fire Daimyo? I gotta answer for this, and feeling sorry for Hidden Sand ain't gonna cut it. So technically, I can do something. I'm just not gonna do it unless there's a really good reason."

"Avoiding war sounds like a good one," Oonoki said.

"There won't be any war between Sand and Leaf, don't be ridiculous," A replied.

"Please don't kick the hornet's nest, Tsuchikage," Mei said.

"It's not that far fetched to take that as a threat," Shikaku said lazily. "As Lady Mizukage says, we don't need to start trouble like this. The Sand has to pull itself out of its own straits for now. If there is a discernible crisis, we'll lend material support. Day to day finance...that's not feasible, unless you're tacitly agreeing to be annexed."

"Don't be ridiculous," Pakura snapped. "The Sand is not that weak!"

"You're not. But you're damn near broke," Shikaku responded. "Weak, no. Weak spots? Plenty. I'm not trying to needle you, ma'am. Just giving you the facts. And we have to be honest, the customers in Wind Country have plenty of alternatives besides us. You and I both know that."

"..." Pakura sunk back into her chair.

"In the good old days, we made concessions," Oonoki said. "You have to give up value in order to get it. I think you know exactly what it is I mean, Kazekage."

"The boy isn't for sale."

"He might have to be if you continue down this road," A added in. "The beast would provide a good windfall."

"So I'm to throw away my greatest military power and my son? Shukaku has been the property of the Sand since its inception. I have no intention of giving it away for what would ultimately be petty cash."

"Don't hide behind that excuse," Mei said.

"Excuse me?"

"I said, don't hide behind that excuse and act like a caring father all of a sudden."

"You smug bitch," Rasa snarled. "What would you-"

"Know about losing family? Know about making sacrifices? About watching those you love disappear? A lot more than you think. And furthermore," she said, gesturing to the Raikage and Hokage, "there are at least two others who already have loved ones that are jinchuuriki. Neither of them are treated in the way that you treat your so called son...they are treated like human beings. Like people who deserve happiness."

"You are just an idealistic child. You think that because you were in a civil war that you had to make hard decisions? Being on the battlefield is easy, being the leader of a village is the real work. And you haven't been doing it long enough to lecture me."

"I am in this room as one of the Five Kage. Don't condescend to me."

"There is no easy solution to this," Hiruzen said from his seat. "It would have to be the daimyo intervening, and they're both prideful and reluctant to help other nations for little to no cost. I'm sorry to say, Kazekage, but there would have to be some sort of concession, short of a crisis where we're obligated to help."

"And in that situation, I'm sure you would, O God of Shinobi."

"No need for that," Ao said. "Lord Sarutobi is one of the most experienced here, if not the most experienced outright. He's simply giving you the facts."

"Lord Kazekage, as much as I hate to admit it...they do have a point," Pakura pointed out. "They can't just give us money, or stop doing missions so we can pick them up. It's ultimately an internal issue that the Wind Country has to sort out before it will get better. Perhaps Gaara's performance will be able to stir up some investment...but in the meantime, we cannot be angry at them for giving us what we know is the truth."

"She's right," Chiyo followed up. "As our young Hokage said before, we have to 'suck less' and properly raise our shinobi to the highest standards. There are markets that we need to try and tap, even if they might be a little risky."

"You guys need to survey," Darui said.

"Survey?" Pakura asked.

"Like canvass your areas. I'm sure you've been way too focused on finishing missions, but there are places off the beaten path that need some help. If it doesn't build money right away, it'll build you a rep that you can use later."

"We don't have that kind of money to waste, boy," Rasa said dismissively.

"You don't have money at all," Shikaku retorted. "The guy's right, you need to expand your market, even if it means longer missions or less pay. Poking your heads in the sand won't help you any at this stage."

"And we're supposed to compete against mercenaries? If you're so invested, Nara, why don't you use that intellect to figure everything out for us?"

Shikaku sighed.

"That's a way to segue into another issue that I've been thinking about. I'm sure that everyone has been briefed on the Akatsuki Group by now," Minato said, folding his hands underneath his chin. "We've noticed them trying to undercut the market for a while now, and it might be making efforts on the part of the Sand harder. On the other hand, they're filling in a gap in services that we don't currently provide, not extensively anyways."

"They're trying to cut the market to ribbons," A said. "The only saving grace for Cloud is that it already has an established network between the shinobi and mercenaries. We don't use Akatsuki and never will. Maybe some rural hicks want to use discount shinobi, but that's not something we can stamp out on our own, nor is it something we need to."

"You would think that, but Akatsuki is exerting considerable pressure on the underworld as they are. Rumours of S-Class criminals and the like, involvement in all kinds of illegal operations including trafficking. There have been rashes of kidnappings in Wave and along both the Fire Country and Water Country coasts. The sea is a big place," Mei said. "They seem like a small problem now, but they're picking up steam and if more people learn about their consistently low price models, we might be in trouble."

"It's interesting that you would say that. Do you remember what I told you about your sincerity?" Oonoki said.

Mei smiled sweetly at him. "Oh, of course. Forgive my lack of manners, Lord Tsuchikage. I believe you might be referring to the unfounded, unproven rumours of Akatsuki originating in the Hidden Mist? Or...should I speak on the evidence that Akatsuki has been used extensively by your village?"

"Little girl..."

"Surely your cabal didn't want that to come out, did they? I suppose I should have consulted with you before the meeting. Again...I truly apologize."

"And what of you? Trying to pull the Iron into a war zone?"

"I was going to speak on that as well," A piped up. "Making shady deals with a country that's supposed to be neutral..."

"Desperate men will believe anything they're told," Mei shot back with a smug smile. "But I'm sure your little hold on me won't mean a thing in the next few seconds."

"She's right. You guys chomped down on the bait," Shikaku said with a yawn.

"We have verified inside intelligence that identifies the party from the Iron as acting outside of the political will of Governor-General Mifune. And what you guys have is bait planted by those operatives in order to get you to mistrust the Mist further. The Mizukage was the only one not to interact with them; everyone else, including our village, did so," Minato confirmed.

Oonoki and A settled back into their seats. Rasa looked nonplussed while Mei looked out at everyone victoriously.

"What could their goal be, then? Do they mean to send us into a war spiral?" Mabui asked.

"We're not entirely sure," Minato admitted. "The one who's in charge of this is a man named Luther Donovan, one of the Iron Country's nobles. Apparently he has a reputation as a rogue element."

"I should have known. I did some studying on the Iron recently and he's quite the character. A few of my escorts have been approached and they did the right thing by initially rejecting any meetings before coming to me. I didn't think anything would good would come out of collaborating with a neutral country in the midst of all this tension," Mei explained.

"There are vulnerable parties here," Oonoki said, looking at Rasa. "And we can't exactly dictate who they choose to trade with."

"It would be a bad idea, made worse by the fact that General Mifune would terminate the agreement and possibly any further trade while he investigated," Shikaku says. "Now that it's out in the open, we all know better than to exchange details with those two. First Lieutenant Evan Yamada and Second Lieutenant Takumi Henson."

"Hmph. Your ANBU seem to be doing a fair job, Hokage," Oonoki quipped.

"Yeah, they're pretty good! Kushina does her part too, you know. Alright, so we've covered financial stuff, Akatsuki a bit, and what looks like a scam from some guy in the Iron. Hmm..." Minato scratched his head. "I really don't know what we can do about Akatsuki outside of bullying them out of our working areas, but that won't make people happy. And on top of that, it also won't make them slide over to us, they'll probably hire mercenaries when they can, or worse, actual criminals. And you have to remember, Akatsuki is pushing their influence by taking over smaller markets, which end up informing the larger markets of what's going on. Rich people don't like spending money unless they have to, or they've established a fair bit of loyalty beforehand. Our villages are strong and stable enough to weather a storm for the most part. We have clients who trust us and nobody else. But we're also not in control of the majority."

"We also have geographic advantages that help us retain a large enough customer base," Mei said. "Akatsuki tends not to operate in the area, and we already have the usual underground networks to deal with. There's also the Gato Corporation to..." She froze. "Shit."

"Mizukage. What are you thinking?" A asked.

"We keep overlooking the influence of criminal elements. They don't hire shinobi unless they can get away with it, and if Akatsuki keeps spreading its influence, they might be extensively hired by these criminal elements very soon. We've been trying to get rid of Gato for decades now, but this is only going to make things worse. That's why what's happening in the Rock is very concerning. Akatsuki is being enabled. I can only assume you did this to balance your books, Tsuchikage."

"Well, it was either that or austerity. And while the people of the Rock are hardy enough to survive it, I couldn't subject them to that kind of punishment."

"I want to scold you like I already have the Kazekage...but I can't. Your situation is different."

"How so?" A demanded.

Mei gave him an incredulous look. "Please don't pull pranks, Raikage."

"Lady Mizukage is obviously referring to your arms gathering," Pakura said sternly. "There's no need for it in the current sociopolitical climate. You look like a warmonger. If not truly justified, there is a reason for the Rock to build up their war chest just in case of an invasion, or heaven forbid, yet another world war. Are we ever going to know peace?"

"That's enough whining, Pakura. We are shinobi, meant to endure. If it means war, then so be it. Is that understood?"

Pakura hung her head and nodded lightly. "Yes, Lord Kazekage. I apologize for my display."

"..." Chiyo looked over at her, but kept silent.

"Endurance and suffering are two different things, Kazekage. What you are asking her to do is suffer," Minato said sternly. "We have responsibilities to our villages. But we are not tools. We are not just weapons. We are people. We are not here just to suffer. We battle for our own freedom and our own peace within this world. Miss Pakura isn't wrong to want peace in our time, and you shouldn't shame her in front of us for expressing that desire. Peace is why we of the Five Kage have gathered for generations. It is why the Tailed Beasts have homes outside of the Leaf. It is what those before us wanted, even if some wanted it more than others. Speaking of peace...and the Leaf...I want you to pay attention to what I say next."

Minato's face turned serious, giving everyone pause. Out of everyone, only Shikaku, Hiruzen, and A had seen that look before - it meant that he was about to do or say something with immense gravity.

"I want you to know what happened twelve years ago, and why it happened. With the major shinobi nations relatively stable, I think this is the best time to talk about it. As you know, the Nine-Tails attacked this village and was driven back before we managed to reseal it inside of my wife, Kushina. It was a complicated series of events that almost ended up leading to a coup and the destruction of the Uchiha Clan, if not for some quick thinking by some of our greatest shinobi. There was a masked man there. He almost killed the Third's wife and her assistant; I barely it made in time. He then tried to kill Naruto, again I just barely saved him too. But that meant leaving Kushina behind. The masked man took Kushina and while her seal was weakened, released the Nine-Tails and immediately took control of it."

"That's something that I think only an Uchiha is capable of," Oonoki said. His face turned grim. "Hokage...you know what I'm thinking, and it's impossible."

"He said it to my face. That he was Madara Uchiha."

"E-excuse me?" Pakura stammered out. "Madara Uchiha-"

"Died at the Valley of the End, yes," Oonoki continued. "I had the...pleasure...of meeting the man myself during my youth, and he was a monster the likes of which hadn't been seen before in the shinobi world, and hasn't been seen since. Hokage, are you absolutely sure...?"

"He had a Sharingan and controlled the Nine-Tailed Fox with precision. Once I severed the contract, it went berserk and led to the opportunity to seal it. It wasn't my doing, either."

"Then the reports were all true," Chiyo said. "Jacob West defeated the Nine-Tails by himself."

"What?!" A yelled. "You can't-"

"She can believe it. Remember, I was right there when it happened. He defeated it, then sealed it inside of Kushina again. Her life was saved as a result, and Madara couldn't get his hands on the fox again unless he tried to attack the village. Here's the problem...I did tag him during our battle, but in the end I couldn't ever locate him. I don't know if he found the tag and got rid of it...there's not much I can think of, other than some truly gruesome attempts that wouldn't work...the seal is chakra based, you see, so even if you remove the surface-"

"I think they get the gist, my boy," Hiruzen interrupted.

"Haha, right. Sorry, I just get carried away sometimes. But yeah...Jacob West was the reason for our victory that night. Naruto, Kushina, and I were all safe and sound because of what he did. Madara is skulking around somewhere, and he's still active. It's possible that it's just someone who's using his name, but I can't think of anyone alive who has that level of mastery with the Sharingan. The only ones who saw the full extent of his abilities were Lord Hashirama and Lady Mito, both of whom have passed on to the Pure Land."

"What kind of ability did he display, Hokage?" Oonoki asked.

"He made use of chains, his Sharingan, and what I assumed was an advanced Sharingan ability, space-time migration. He used it to teleport and change positions, and also to phase his body in and out of the physical plane. Do any of those sound familiar, Tsuchikage?"

"The chains I can see, Madara was a master of every possible form of combat. The Sharingan, naturally. But this space-time migration...no, I can't say I've seen it. I never regularly encountered Madara, and tales of his fury seemed restricted to talk of his chakra construct, Fire Release monstrosities, and Sharingan genjutsu along with him just beating people to death with his bare hands."

"Susano'o didn't come up. He probably figured that the Nine-Tails was enough," Minato mused. "And his combat was sharp...maybe too sharp, though. Almost as if he knew things about me, about my habits. It's possible that he could have spied on me at some point, but I doubt it. It wouldn't have helped with his plan."

"Do you think he's aligned with Akatsuki?" Mei asked. "The records about what happened were predictably destroyed, but what we do know is that during the Third War there was an attempt to use someone as a sort of bomb...basically by using any prisoner available, sealing the beast into them, and then letting them escape, hopefully having them end up in a friendly area. The target, from what I could ascertain, was most likely the Leaf at that time."

"Who was this poor soul?" Pakura asked.

"We don't know even now. The seal completely failed while on the way back to the Leaf, and the team following the host was summarily slaughtered. Some time later, the village recaptured the Three-Tails and sealed it into Yagura. After that...the trouble really started. Lord Hokage bringing up Madara's reappearance ties into something that I and others have long suspected: that Yagura Karatachi was being manipulated by someone behind the scenes. One of my best men, Kisame Hoshigaki, was heavily involved in the previous regime and saw all of the betrayal and corruption take place first hand. It was he who first made mention of Akatsuki skulking around. Unfortunately, whoever it was didn't make themselves known to Kisame in full. They promised him 'freedom from a world of lies' but he was skeptical enough that he delayed any commitment to the idea."

"You think it was Madara who was behind everything in the Mist, Lady Mizukage?"

"It really sounds like it. I can't think of anything else after what Lord Hokage told us. Someone who controlled the Nine-Tails with ease would certainly be able to overpower a host and their tailed beast if he so chose."

"Madara should be of very advanced age," Chiyo pointed out. "But according to Lord Hokage, he was able to become a considerable nuisance with his physical skill alone. There's every possibility we might be dealing with a clone or proxy."

"It would have to be an Uchiha based on the data we have," Hiruzen said. "With everything we have, it's very hard to shake the claim that he's made. We simply don't know of anyone who could control the Nine-Tails, or even has other than Madara. All other known Uchiha are within the walls of this village, or are deceased. Taking a Sharingan comes with consequences akin to any doujutsu transplant that ends up outside of the home clan. The efficiency of the eyes drops drastically unless the skills are honed over a number of years. Furthermore, depending on the abilities, the chakra requirements can be immense. We're going to look into it closely, but it's safe to say that this Madara is either someone we know well from history, or a complete unknown who has made his way onto the scene undetected until now."

"Speaking of avoiding detection, I received an anonymous tip a few months prior," A said, placing one arm on the table. "There were reports of him wandering around the Lightning Country."

"Him?" Ao asked.

"Oh...Lord Raikage means to say that he was chasing after Joshua West, that man's grandson," Mei said with a smile. "I've always wanted to meet him, he seems charming."

"I'm guessing you didn't catch him?" Minato asked, chuckling. "From what I hear, he's got rockets on his feet."

"Allegedly, the search team had him inside of their dragnet and he shot through it. He also has a companion that I'm sure you won't like."

"Try me. S-Class criminal? Is he actually working with Madara? What is it?"

"The Gold Reaper herself."

"Huh." Minato rubbed his chin. "I have no idea what that means for us, honestly."

"If your gripe is that the golden child has taken a lot of lives, that would be deeply ironic on your end," Oonoki laughed. "And as far as I know, she's not one to join with unsavory types. She has a long-standing emnity with the Yakuza, for instance."

"This is the same woman who slaughtered good shinobi at Sprite Valley. Perhaps what she does is of no concern to you, but those were people of my village, and it happened under my rule. To let her get away with that act would be worse than genocide."

"That account is heavily disputed, and according to many sources, the only time she has ever done such a thing. We don't know what happened at Sprite Valley, and furthermore, it wasn't within your jurisdiction anyways, Lord Raikage. I really am sorry for the losses you incurred, and for the families of those soldiers. But they did do something foolish in thinking they could simply handle such a prolific mercenary without serious backup," Mei pointed out. "Even if your personal grudge was fully justified, her joining up with Jacob West's grandson isn't an indication of anything bad going on. It might be a good thing, in fact...if such a force of nature could align herself with him, he must have a strong character by default."

"Admire him all you want, Mizukage," Rasa growled. "He's a menace with unknown motives, and a criminal to boot. Even his own village thinks so and kicked him out."

"All we know is that he was exiled," Ao said. "And all accounts indicate that it was for a non-violent crime of some sort, or even a violation of the laws of his hometown. There's also the fact that the foreign affairs minister is his mother, and his father is one of the Great Twin Blades. Criminals can do terrible things regardless of upbringing, yes. But it looks like he was hustled out of town for looking into something he shouldn't have."

"More than likely has to do with his grandfather," Chiyo said. "They're tight-lipped about him now, and just take to calling the man 'Renegade' as some sort of code. If the lad wanted to find out about his grandfather and ended up sticking his nose where he shouldn't have..."

"Hold on," Darui interrupted. "Remember earlier in this shindig? Who was that guy responsible for sending his salesmen out here?"

"Luther Donovan, someone important in Iron Country, and close to the family of the founders. He was briefly involved in...some sort of scandal with the Kennedy family's only daughter," Mabui answered. "That poor girl. Her entire life was plastered all over the news."

"I was thinking it from the start," Shikaku said. "Donovan more than likely had a hand in getting the kid kicked out, thinking he might have stumbled onto something he shouldn't have, or got close to it."

"Your speculations ultimately don't matter," Rasa said, earning another glare from Mei. "He's an outcast and criminal. There's every possibility of him and the gold bitch teaming up with Akatsuki or the masked freak playing as Madara Uchiha. The Raikage is right to treat them both as hostile, and I've already followed suit."

Pakura held her tongue, hoping someone would say what was on her mind for her.

"Oh, really. And what army do you have that's capable of stopping him and the Gold Reaper?" Mei asked.

Pakura couldn't help but let the faintest smile cross her lips. Minato didn't miss it, lightly chuckling.

"Maybe we should consider talking to the boy. See what he really wants," Oonoki suggested. "I wouldn't object to having another meeting with him involved, at least while we're all gathered in the same place."

"I have no objections to such," Mei said.

"Absolutely not. I don't negotiate with terrorists, or the descendants of them," A said firmly.

"I'm the same. There's also no guarantee he won't do something violent," Rasa followed.

"What are you basing that on, Lord Kazekage?" Ao asked, knowing the answer.

"That's none of your concern, Mist dog."

"It would be welcome if you watched your tone with my comrade, Kazekage."

He glared at Blues. "Are you making demands of me?"

"I would never do anything of the sort, my lord. But I promise, with the blessings of my lady, that such remarks disparaging the Hidden Mist will not go unchallenged."

"She indeed has my blessing," Mei said sternly. "I hope I won't have to repeat myself, Kazekage. Watch. Your. Mouth."

"Well, I for one am pretty interested in meeting the guy! That's a vote of three to two, if you weren't keeping score," Minato said, interrupting the impending showdown. "We can have a meeting with just the three Kage in favor if that's what's happening. But I extend an invitation to both the Raikage and Kazekage if they want to join us regardless. Now, we have an idea of the Gold Reaper's channels, so we can make contact with her and see what happens afterwards. There won't be a hard deadline, since I'm sure you're not all going to rush home right after the tournament ends, so we'll try to have it done within the next two or three weeks. Next week before the tourney is preferable since I know tensions will be running a bit high. I'm gonna be cheering for my son and all the other Leaf genin!"

"I'll be looking forward to Miyajima flattening your brat," A said with a grunt.

"Hah! Bring it on! Mizukage, your kids look sharp too."

"They do. I'm quite proud of them, getting this far in such a crowded field is an incredible accomplishment. I'm really excited to see what they do next," Mei said with a smile.

"..." Rasa said nothing, folding his arms.

"Normally I'd have no horse in this race, but I'm betting on the Uchiha boy to steal the show," Oonoki said.

"Sasuke's pretty incredible, too! Yeah, there are a lot of talented kids this year, and I'm pretty sure a lot of them will be promoted. We'll see what happens after this tournament, but it's going to be a great showcase for the villages. Tickets have been sold out since forever, and we've got screens outside of the stadium so that people can gather and watch. Man, the street vendors are gonna make a killing. Oh, Lord Sarutobi..."

"We did make sure to add a marginal tax increase on sales, licenses, and permits."

"Nice! And our cunning plan means that most of it goes to us, and not those bobble-heads in the capital. I've already got some super cool ideas for Academy upgrades and new shinobi tools. Books are nice and balanced."

"Sounds like you've got everything together, Lord Hokage," Pakura noted.

"Yep! All thanks to my predecessor and his amazing village reform. Even now, I've got the best team with me. Shikaku here is part of that, and so is my amazing wife. We've got the Uchiha, the Hyuuga, the Aburame have been aces lately, too...so many people just coming together to make it all work. Can't do it without them." He clapped his hands. "I think we've gone through all the important material. So, to sum it up. We can't do much about the Sand's finances. The two diplomats sent by the Iron are illegitimate, and are acting recklessly on the orders of a rogue element. We'll monitor them closely for now. Joshua West is working with the Gold Reaper, and we have proposed a meeting to try and figure out their intentions. Madara Uchiha is allegedly alive and a direct threat to the shinobi world. We have no idea where is or what he's planning, though there are rumours of him working with Akatsuki. Akatsuki is another problem, as they seek to undermine the shinobi market and are possibly conspiring with major players in the underworld to commit large-scale crimes. These could potentially lead to the collapse of the shinobi villages. We'll deal with all of these things together, one piece at a time. I think that sounds good."

"I'm in agreement," Oonoki said.

"Acceptable. I'll be attending the meeting with the deviant as well," A followed.

"Yes, that sounds good. Thank you, Lord Hokage," Mei said.

"I'll be at the meeting with the criminal," Rasa said.

"Alright! Thanks for your time, everyone. Talk about this with your villages, but exercise a bit of caution, yeah?" Minato said with a smile. "We'll meet again in a week for the tournament!"

The other Kage and their associates filed out of the room in order, leaving the Hokage and his team behind with the ANBU.

"How'd I do?" Minato asked Hiruzen and Shikaku.

"Very well, my boy. I've always enjoyed your approach to diplomacy, very refreshing," Hiruzen said.

"I find it precarious myself and troublesome...but it works. Can't expect anything less from the guy who regularly deals with the Red Hot Habanero..."

"Hey! She's not nearly as bad as she used to be."

"See? Only a husband would say something like that." Shikaku sighed. "But I don't have much room to talk."

"Are you about to be depressing again?"

"Maybe."

"Come, my child. We have drink in the office to calm your nerves before you go home." Hiruzen chuckled and patted Shikaku on the back as they left the meeting room.

"Haru?"

The young woman with the fox mask appeared in front of him, getting to one knee. "Lord Hokage, at your will. What must I do?"

"Easy, now. Up," Minato said with a gesture. She got to her feet. "Okay, did you get all of that earlier?"

"Every word, my lord."

"Good. Report to Kushina, tell her it's authorized. I'm also recommending that you give the full report to our friends, but listen to what she tells you in the end. After all, you're her daughter more than mine!"

"Of course. I'll carry out your will, Lord Hokage."

He smiled and patted her head gently. "See you soon, Haru."

She nodded and disappeared.

"Everyone else, dismissed. You're off until tomorrow afternoon."

The ANBU all saluted before vanishing as well. Minato went back to grab his hat, putting it on top of his head.

"Things are in motion. Alright, Madara...we're going to take you down for sure. Here we come."

And with a yellow flash of light, he was gone.

and we're back, probably

---

There was less than a week to the opening round of the tournament. On that basis, whatever needed to happen, it needed to happen now. The ANBU were scrutinizing more areas and people than before, and it would continue for the next few weeks. The Fourth Hokage's and Kushina's protection would only go so far, since there were other people who wouldn't be sympathetic to dealings with supposed criminals.

With that in mind, Yuu Sanyo prepared for another appearance. Ritsu modified her previous outfit, deciding to go with a leather skirt that fit a little closer to her body. Heels, but no stockings this time. A red silk blouse, unbuttoned at the top. Same glasses, same light green eyes, same long hair. Earrings, check. Necklace, check. Small purse.

"You look quite delicious tonight," a voice called from behind her. Ritsu smiled and turned to face her mistress, who leaned against the door frame and smiled back.

"I'm glad you think so, ma'am. I might...have to do some daring things."

"It comes with the territory."

"If you're not okay with it..."

"I'm not, really. But you have a job to do. This is what we trained you for, remember?"

"I know. I just don't like making you feel badly about it, ma'am."

"You really are a sweet girl," Hannah said. "Don't you worry about my jealousy too much. I know you'll come back to me." She traced circles in the carpet with her toes. "It's not healthy. Or even proper. I don't pretend it is, either way. You'll say that it's fine, and you'll be sincere about it, because you haven't known much better."

"Perhaps not. But I want you as much as you want me."

Hannah kept her gaze downward. "No matter what happens...I want you to come back here. To me."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

"I love you. I always will. We all have...those kinds of vices. Seeing you happy makes me feel the same way. That's why I'm okay with being so wrapped up in you. Hannah, I like it. I mean that, I really love how things are. Just like I'm so comfortable with Joshua as he is."

"I love you too, Ritsu. I'll take care of you as much as I can."

"You've been doing that," she said with a smile. "It's unorthodox, and you're wondering if you're doing something wrong. Believe me, I know the feeling. But you've been a lovely mistress to me. I don't wake up at night questioning myself anymore. I don't feel like I've been cast aside. You're always brilliant...believe in yourself, ma'am. You know what's best in your heart."

Hannah stepped forward and put her hand on Ritsu's chest, tracing along a certain scar beneath her blouse.

"You always knew things like that," Ritsu said. "You're wonderful. You always have been."

She stared into Ritsu's bright green eyes, finding herself within that loving, confident gaze. Her hands went to the other girl's shoulders, and then she leaned forward for a kiss. Ritsu slowly returned it, and they separated after a moment, calmly staring at each other.

"I was uncertain before, but I understand now. From here on, I'll be more responsible," Hannah said. "Both to you, and to myself."

"Understood, ma'am. Thank you."

"The pleasure is mine, my darling. Please be safe. I'll wait up until you return."

"Then I'll be off." Ritsu nodded lightly, shouldering her purse again and walking through the open door.

---

"Room for one more?"

Evan Yamada looked up at his visitor, confused for a moment.

"You forgot about me already. Awful stuff, Evan."

"Yuu Sanyo?"

"Yup, that's me! How you doing?" Ritsu asked as she slid into the booth beside Yamada, pushing him right with her hip. "I wasn't expecting you back at this particular watering hole. Where's your cutie-pie junior?"

"Back at the hotel, working on something. Hoping to finally sink your teeth into him, huh."

Ritsu rolled her eyes. "Please. He's adorable, but that's all he ever could be. If I'm taking the plunge...gonna need something a bit more than that, y'know." She purposely kept her gaze away from him as she said that, letting out a long breath as she finished.

"That so..."

"Mm-hm." She gave him her attention. "I was all fired up the other night, so I mighta come off as a bit harsh. Opinions, you know."

Yamada thought about it a bit before shrugging. "Happens." He sipped at his beer and Ritsu undid a button on her blouse as soon as she noticed him looking. Her hand waved near her face and she sighed audibly.

"Shit, it's hot. I dunno what's up with me today."

"Beer?"

"Yeah? You gonna buy me one? You don't need to, Evan."

"It's fine. Unless you don't think I'm man enough," he joked.

"You seem like plenty," she shot back with a wink. His brain was visibly shifting gears, as she could only expect. Things were working well so far.

Ritsu got her beer and started to gulp it down, an easy enough feat. She had been drinking regularly for a while, enough to easily outdrink most men she had come across. There wasn't really any way to tell how much liquour someone could take on until they really started drinking...and as Yamada gulped down his glass to keep pace, she was subtly observing him.

Right. It wouldn't take too long to make him vulnerable.

"You can really pound it down," he remarked. Ritsu smiled.

"Chalk it up to genetics. Like I said, we can go dutch if you want."

"No, it's fine. I wanted to talk anyways."

"Did you? About what?" she asked as she took another sip of beer, finishing off her glass.

"Just about personal things, really. If you want to talk about business later, we can do that too."

"Yeah? I appreciate that. Let's chat, then," Ritsu said, sliding herself next to him. She could feel his body heat as she pressed herself gently into his side. "Actually, tell me a bit about your boy. Takumi's really sweet, but..."

"A bit on the weird side. Yeah, I know. You can see it from a mile away."

"Really idealistic."

"Between us...he's been like that since Lord Donovan got to him. I mean, we were handpicked for this outing, but Henson is different. Got a serious complex when it comes to others, especially them."

"Them?" Ritsu asked innocently, trying not to cringe.

"You know. Them. A little extra pigment...you know."

"Ah, yeah, yeah. I just didn't know the...terminology."

"I guess not. Don't get me wrong, I don't care what it is they do, and I don't have the weird obsession others have about them. Just a lot of 'em that came over act different." Another four glasses came to the table via waitress, and they both thanked her before clinking two together and drinking.

"Not sure I can relate," Ritsu said, wiping her mouth with a napkin.

"Lucky you."

"Mm." She took another sip of beer and purposely let a bit spill down her chin, towards the front of her blouse. "Ah, whoops."

"You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm alright. Just clumsy," she said with a laugh. Reaching for another napkin, she took her time soaking up the liquid that had splashed onto her skin. "Good thing it missed the blouse. I really like this one."

"Yeah. It's nice."

"Think so? I bought it while I was here." She shifted her eyes towards him. "What's your wife's size?"

"Little bigger than yours. Maybe a size or two." He sipped at his beer to distract himself.

"Ah, I see," she said, absentmindedly dabbing at her chest. "Might make a good return present. Things are good at home?"

"Not really."

"Heh. Good time to get away, then."

"Something like that," he said with a chuckle. "We've been married five years now. Still thinking about having a kid, well at least I am. She's alright with whatever I pick."

"That sounds nice." Ritsu set the damp napkin down on the table and sipped at her beer again. "She sounds like a keeper, honestly. I'm guessing that's why you want the whole peace thing to work?"

"Not really." Yamada finished the rest of his beer and reached for the next full glass. Ritsu re-positioned herself so that her thigh was touching his.

"Oh? Lemme guess, in it for the money?"

"Yeah. I mean, I like the idea put out. I would like to live in a peaceful world, travel, make money. But we already live in a neutral territory, you know? I'm not into that whole save the world schtick like Henson is. I dunno what it is with him, he really wants to be a hero."

"A hero? Takes a bit of sacrifice on your part to do that, you know."

"Yeah, I told him as much. I don't hate the kid, but...he gets into his own head sometimes. Probably made it easy for Lord Donovan to motivate him, or whatever it was he did. Seems creepy if you think about it too hard. Like a cult or something."

"Yeah, it does sound like that. Poor guy, he seemed nice."

"He's not a bad guy. Just...misguided."

"Mm. What about you? What are you into?" Ritsu asked, placing her hand against his thigh. She sipped at her beer again and saw the heat creeping onto his cheeks.

"Just want a normal life."

"Wife and kids?"

"Something like that."

Ritsu laughed softly. "Come on. I'm sure you're not that boring, buddy. I mean, you got picked for this thing without being wedded to the cause. Anything juicy? Something for your old girl Yuu to take home with her."

"Heh. I'm supposed to give out information for free?"

"Not for free, no. Would I do that to you? I gotta be a little professional, hon."

"Just a little?"

"Just a little," she said with a smile, moving her hand towards the inside of his thigh. Her eyes shifted colour briefly as she looked up at him, and for a moment he thought he could see them glowing.

Drinks were probably hitting him hard. Well, whatever. One more wouldn't hurt.

Everything was swirling together at once. The blouse was clinging to her and her exposed skin was glistening with sweat. It was hot, yeah. She did say that earlier.

"C'mon. Share a secret, pretty please..."

She was playful, joking. Snuggling into him. She smelled really good. Her hand was on his thigh. Did she want something? She...probably did.

"Can't say too much."

"Ooh, that means you can tell me a little something." Ritsu smiled and raised her glass before gulping down the beer. Some of it spilled down the corners of her mouth and the droplets slid down her raised chin. Yamada unconsciously followed the moisture downwards as it went towards her breasts and into her cleavage. His gaze lingered on her a while longer until she let out a breath, tilting her head back down and placing her glass on the table. He watched her tongue slowly go across her lips.

"That was good. Mind if I order us some more?" she asked, glowing from the heat. She looked like she was drunk already, he couldn't really tell.

"By all means. I'm good for it."

"Seriously, that's too nice of you. At least let me cover the tip, yeah?"

"Yeah...sure."

"Good. Now, you were about to tell me something juicy." He found his arm around her waist. "So, spill for me."

"Most of it is written down...things like that," he said. "Truth is...Henson is bait."

"Bait? For what?"

"I dunno." The waitress took away the empty glasses and replaced them with full ones. Yamada reflexively drank down half of his new glass. "Lord Donovan was saying something about it. Just told him and me to be ready. I think he's trying to pull the Mist into something, but that's between him and Henson, really. Also...saw him talking to some guy the other day. Couldn't see his face. Deep voice, had a whole goofy cloak on and everything. Seems a bit shady, you know?"

"Mm-hm. So you don't know what Henson is doing?"

"Not supposed to." He drank down the rest of his glass. Hm. Guess he wasn't as drunk as he thought. "Yeah. He doesn't know either. Sealed instructions."

"Huh. Neat."

"Something else, though. You know...Donovan has this kind of nationalist thing going on? The Iron's Shadow...like a club, sorta. Henson might be in it."

"Ah. Not interested yourself?"

"Wife likes to go out on Tuesdays. No go."

"Bummer."

"Yeah." He downed another glass of beer. "Ah, shit. Finally caught up to me."

Ritsu slid to her left and off the leather seat, letting Yamada out.

"Be right back," he muttered.

"Yeah. Take your time." Ritsu looked at the glasses left. Thought about possibly spiking them to finish the job, but decided against it. No point. He was on his last legs anyways, even if he didn't realize it.

Well. Time to bring the train home. No telling what could really happen, but...this was part of the job. Just as Hannah said. In that case, a simple trick. Ritsu flipped through her memories until she found something suitable, then focused on it. Her hand wrapped around the cold glass of beer in front of her, wet with condensation that slid onto her fingers.

Yamada lumbered back and she slid over to make room for him. The heat that was forming in her chest flowed out to the rest of her, colouring her cheeks.

"You okay?" he asked, openly staring at her. She raised her head and met his gaze.

"Fine. Might be a bit flushed from the booze. You?"

"I'm alright."

"You wanna get out of here? Talk some more somewhere else?" she asked suggestively.

"Not opposed to the idea."

"Your place, then. Actually, we're probably at the same hotel. We can talk some more business afterwards."

"Sure you're up to it?"

"I'm sure. We'll have plenty of time in the morning," she said with a smile.

The expression on his face said enough. He was done for.

"Yeah. Let's head out, then."

Calling over the waitress, Yamada paid their bill and Ritsu followed with the tip. They left with his arm around her, her laugh floating through the air and making him feel like he was as lucky as he'd ever been. Ritsu encouraged his touch as they headed towards the hotel, and it slowly shifted into groping. She leaned into it, and him as they moved. There was more on the Iron's Shadow, which sounded more and more like a radical group, and something dangerous enough to cause problems. Yamada was very much a dry, plain, company man aside from his rampant adultery.

"Well, shall we drop the pretenses?" she asked as he closed the door to his room behind them. Ritsu sat on his bed and gave him a teasing smile. "We're both a little drunk, and more than that."

"I was thinking about it...getting a piece of you."

"Were you? Then I bet you're glad you got the opportunity..." She unbuttoned her blouse and hung it over one of the bedposts. "To your liking?"

"Yeah."

Ritsu ran a hand over the smooth skin on her stomach. "Hoped so. You know, I knew a girl once with a lot of scars. All over her. It was crazy..."

Yamada grunted and unbuttoned his shirt, albeit slowly with the loss of coordination. His brain was starting to catch up to the fact that he was incredibly drunk. Ritsu hoped he would drop before they had to do anything further than heavy petting.

He gave up halfway and went over to her, groping at her smooth skin and pulling her in for a kiss. She relaxed herself and obliged, uncomfortable with his rough groping and the way he shoved his tongue into her mouth with no care.

It was confusing. What did women see in this man? He was married? Was she settling? The ethical debate between exposing him and letting the other woman live with her choices was going on in the background of her mind. In the meantime, she pulled her head back to get some well deserved air, smiled, and then took the lead with a series of softer, more reasonable kisses on the lips. The change of tempo only lasted a moment before she felt her bra tighten around her chest from the pulling at it.

"Easy, big boy. Let me get that," she said with a sultry tone. Her hands went to her back and she undid the clasps, then let the whole thing fall away. He clumsily shoved her onto the bed a moment later, looking down at her hungrily.

"You've got an appetite on you, eh?" she said with another smile.

He drowsily stared at her and fumbled with the belt on his pants. Ritsu mentally groaned but maintained her posture.

"Hey...outside pocket of my purse. Never leave home without it."

There was a moment of confusion before his shadow moved from over her and he went to her purse.

Ritsu held in the fury she felt at that moment. He really was going to...?

Fucking unbelievable you fucking trash I swear to god if I wasn't under orders I'd take your fucking balls and-

"Got it." The familiar plastic square was in between his fingers and Ritsu nodded, stowing away her thoughts.

"Goodie. You...want some help? I'm real good at getting guys a good fit," she said with emphasis.

"S-should be good..."

"Aw. Well," she said as she reluctantly pulled off her leather skirt, "I won't be going anywhere, so..."

He nodded, but his movements were becoming slower. The haze was visibly taking over him.

A hand fumbled at his belt.

"Hey...sure you don't need..."

He ignored her and sat on the bed, trying to get his pants off. The haze then overtook him completely and he passed out, his head falling into Ritsu's lap. She went still for a minute before slipping out from underneath him and sighing with relief.

"Oh, fucking hell. Thank fuck for small mercies. Ah, shit..." She shook with anger for a while, sliding to her knees on the carpet and staying there with her head hung low. She muttered curses until she felt that she was sufficiently calm, then stood up and took a deep breath in.

"Let's take care of business." Her hands went to the sides of Yamada's head. She focused and her chakra flowed into him, mixing with his own to provide the foundations of a dream. A bit more work, and that dream would feel like reality as he slept. Something nice and lewd, in line with what he expected to get.

Genjutsu was nice like that.

Ritsu tossed her bra onto the bed, intending to leave it there as "proof" that something did indeed happen. She put on her blouse, leaving it open on account of the heat, and then went around the room searching for material. Yamada did say he had things written down.

"Ah, here we are." A bag with quite a few scrolls, already unsealed. Perfect. She went to the other side of the bed and unrolled them one at a time, looking at the contents. At first, nothing that she didn't already know or couldn't deduce. Then some interesting details came up. She rooted through the bag for a blank scroll and found one, grabbing a pen and jotting down some quick notes for later.

"Nothing too exciting so far...mm." She scanned another scroll, hands pressed against the bed as she focused. "There's the little detail he was talking about with Takumi, but that's a dead end, like he mentioned earlier. And the next scroll is...personal notes. Too macho to call it a fucking diary, huh." She huffed and looked it over. Lots of juicy details. He lied about his relationship with Takumi - couldn't stand the kid. The vague notes on meetings were obviously referring to women he slept with. Back and forths, heres and theres...thought little of the Mizukage aside from her body. Naturally. The way he talked about the "other" made his fear of the Raikage make sense. The Hokage naturally pissed him off. Good looking and successful with a beautful wife. All the things he wasn't.

But as she went further into the notes, things started to go much, much deeper. Iron's Shadow wasn't just a cult, as much as he thought they were.

These were terrorists. And Takumi was indoctrinated into their number. Yamada was somehow oblivious.

"..."

Not much could be done at this stage. Not yet.

Ritsu took more notes and rolled up the scroll, along with the others. She placed them back into the bag in the order she found them, and then placed the one with her notes into her purse. She squeezed back into her leather skirt, put on her heels, and looked back at the snoring Yamada one last time before buttoning up her blouse and leaving.

"Part of the job..."

She mumbled the words to herself as she walked down the hotel hall, exiting shortly after into the heat of the night. Maybe it was part of the job, part of the experience. It was what she trained for.

But her feelings were still there. Seducing men was one aspect, sleeping with them was another. That seemed to be a bridge too far, somehow. Despite the training, despite the mental conditioning. It wasn't icky, or disturbing...maybe not as disturbing as she once thought. It wasn't like she was a virgin, or inexperienced by any measure anymore. But now the experience was...deeply different. Perhaps one day she would have to go further than just kissing or cuddling to get information, but she didn't want to think about it. For now, it was fine as a mystery.

Haru met her at the door and ushered her in.

"I'm home."

Ritsu announced it as she always did. She saw Joshua sleeping on the couch with a book opened over his face, the pages rustling with his breaths. Her eyes lingered a bit on his shirtless form before she walked upstairs to her shared room with Hannah. The girl in question was seated on the bed, reading a book of her own.

"Good morning, ma'am."

Hannah looked up and closed her book, setting it behind her. On account of the heat, she wore a long shirt with little underneath it. "Good morning, Ritsu."

"We didn't go all the way," Ritsu said as she set down her purse and removed her glasses. She sat close to Hannah on the left of the bed, their thighs touching. "I layered a genjutsu onto him so that his brain would delay the effects of his drinking. So...he drank a lot more than he would have normally."

"I see."

"He brought me back to his room. Had his hands all over me. Couldn't kiss worth a damn. He was..." Ritsu sighed and made a disgusted face. "Going to do it raw."

Hannah frowned. "Well."

"Yeah. Thankfully the extra time to get the protection from my bag helped, and he passed out before he could get his pants off."

"Lovely," Hannah said. "And I do mean that sincerely."

"Complete boor. Boring, shitty attitude, just failing upwards constantly. There's a lot to report, so-"

Hannah placed a finger on her companion's lips. "Ritsu. Our day can start in earnest later. Our beloved leader is asleep, and you're exhausted. I know you are."

"I drank a lot, too. Enough, I guess."

"Yes. Don't worry about it."

"MIss Hannah?"

"You know how jealous I get. Even if he wasn't inside of you...I hate it. I hate the thought of it."

"...I know. Me too. It's part of the job, but...me too."

"Let me hold onto you for tonight. Is that alright?" Hannah asked quietly.

"Of course it is," Ritsu replied. "Did...you want me like this?"

"Yes. It's selfish, and I apologize."

Ritsu blushed as Hannah took her right hand, wrapping their fingers together. They both laid back on their bed, looking into each other's eyes.

This was the best high of the night by far, Ritsu thought to herself. A level of emotion, of feeling that was near impossible to match.

An uninterrupted, beautiful connection.

Ritsu let a serene smile spread across her face, her eyes slowly closing. She then felt herself pulled into the warmth of her mistress' bosom, their hands and fingers still intimately linked.

And at that, she finally went to sleep.

---
---

You pull the book from your face and yawn.

Another morning in the Leaf.

"Master West, good morning."

You scratch your head and take note of the fox-mask attached to a body. Oh, right. That's a person you know.

"Morning, Haru. Sleep well?"

"Optimally, sir. No issues. I am currently refreshed."

You nod. "Good. The ladies up?"

"Not yet, sir."

"Good. Leave 'em be and make 'em some breakfast later," you say as you get up. "Stuff like that is trying, I figured as much...I'm not a fan of other people poking around Ritsu either. Just 'cause it comes with the territory doesn't mean I have to like it."

"That's understandable, sir. I have not been involved in such acts, but I understand that Mistress Kuiper and Madam Tanaka have had experiences in these fields. It must have extracted a heavy psychological toll."

"Yeah. They're coping with it by sticking together. I'm cool with it since it's doing a lot for them. One day, they'll be all the way over those things...I believe it'll happen."

"That's kind of you, sir."

"Maybe. Anyways, I'm off to the showers. Something quick for breakfast and a briefing, please."

"Understood. I'll have your breakfast ready for your return."

You gently pat her head, hearing a faint purr from beneath the mask as you leave.

One long shower later, you get dressed and sit down to a light breakfast with Haru. She gives you the daily briefing, and not much has changed.

"Nothing about the Summit yet, sir?" she asks.

"Nope, not 'till we're all together. Plus you said you had something that's pretty big to spill," you say before sipping at your tea. "Figure we'd need to coordinate before we move an inch. Plus there's no point in you telling the same story over and over."

"I-"

"Ah, ah. No overworking."

"Understood, sir. For your consideration, the menu for today. We have the Uchiha Clan, where certain elements have been made aware of your arrival and wish to meet if you have time and space. Lady Tsunade is available for a meeting if you so choose. Lady Kushina is available. The Honourable Third will be outside of the village, but we can make time to meet him at your leisure. These are the major options for contact if you wish to gather more information at this time."

"Alright. So I should pick between those..."

You lean back in your chair. Haru shifts her mask up a bit so she can sip her tea.

---

[] Just hang out indoors for now. It's hot and you can catch up on some reading while the girls wake up.

[] Pick from the "menu".
-[] Meet with whoever of the Uchiha wants to see you. It'll probably be interesting.
-[] Go and see Tsunade. The stories about her are...pleasant.
-[] Meet with the Third outside of town. Seems like a nice old fellow.
-[] Go and see Kushina again. It would make her day, and maybe she has more information for you.

[] Maybe you could see what Haru wants to do. She's probably thought of something important.

[] Other option (write-in).

Episode 3.9: Brave New World
"We'll go and see the Uchiha today. Quick stop, right?"

"Yes, sir. I'll confirm the first point of contact. Please excuse me."

Haru stands and gives you a bow before heading outside. A few minutes later she returns and bows to you again.

"Things should be ready. Please follow me."

"Taking the back route, then," you muse.

"Yes, sir. Hikari, please watch over the two mistresses."

Another ANBU woman with short white hair appears in front of you and bows. Her face is covered with a wolf mask, and she's a bit on the smaller side. About Ritsu's height, if you had to guess. But from what you can see of her, she's fairly toned and looks to be strong.

"Understood. Count on me, sir, ma'am."

Haru nods and pats Hikari on the head twice. "Thank you very much."

"Safe travels, sir, ma'am."

"Thanks, Hikari. We'll see you in a bit."

"Sir." She stands at attention as you leave with Haru. The two of you travel through the nearby forest and around the back end of the village, getting within sight of the large circular wall that forms the outer bounds of the village.

"Hikari is my junior," Haru says as you jog through the trees together. "She's a very obedient child, and we've become close. I decided a long time ago to teach her everything I knew."

"That's good of you, Haru."

"I wondered if it was at first. My initial instinct was to ensure things were properly passed down in case of my death. But as I lived on, I found myself in the care of Lady Kushina. I serve as her personal guard, but she treats me as more than that. I am family to her. And so, when I came upon Hikari again, I showed her the same love that was shown to me. She has become strong and brave, more than I could have hoped for."

"Feels good, doesn't it?" you say with a smile.

"It does. I know you are also proud of Madam Ritsu. She is incredible for someone who was born as a civilian, and I know she will only continue to grow by leaps and bounds. She was relieved to come in this morning and see you, I could tell."

"Yeah. She's been really great, and I do love her a whole lot. Probably more than she knows right now."

"I've noticed how much you care for both of the mistresses. Family can come from anywhere, I realize that now. It's not just about bloodlines, or who you're attached to. True family comes from the beautiful bonds we make with each other."

"You sure you're ANBU?" you joke.

For the first time, you hear Haru giggle. "I'm sure, sir. Being serious is part of the job, but...we are more than weapons. Lady Kushina is always sure to remind me of that."

"She's right to say it."

"Perhaps this world will change one day, and people like us won't be needed so often. We might be free to pursue our own dreams, small as they might be. But for now, we are shinobi. And to be a shinobi means to endure."

You really do want something like that to change. One day...

Eventually you find yourself in what looks to be the outskirts of the Uchiha District. Each of the notable Leaf clans has their own area, though everyone is able to pass through them at their will. The Uchiha were originally sequestered in this area, and the Military Police Force is also here with its built in prison. From what Haru has told you, this and placing the Uchiha in charge of the police was meant to both monitor their movements and give them ties to the village, or rather incentive not to rebel. It didn't work as well as hoped and the Uchiha became more and more paranoid until they were on the cusp of a coup. Something like that would destroy the Leaf from the inside out.

From the fact that the Uchiha are here today and loyal to the village, that crisis was soundly averted.

"Here, sir. Your code name is Duo for today." Haru hands you a tanto and an oni mask.

"Duo, huh." You chuckle and equip the tanto on your lower back before putting on the mask. Your vision is, as you would guess, unobstructed. ANBU like Haru didn't see the world any differently from you, then. "Okay, I'm good to go."

"Please follow me, then." Haru leads you into the district, where you can see many people with dark eyes and dark hair. A few people look different, but those are either visitors or people who were brought into the clan by various means. Everything is lively, though. People haggle with each other over food, merchants yell out their deals, and sweet treats are handed out to children. There are more than a few uniformed shinobi, and still others who wear dark clothing with a distinctive patch on the shoulder; a four pointed star with the symbol of the Leaf in the middle.

Haru takes you down the wide streets and towards one of the bigger homes in the area. Not a mansion, but sizable enough to stand out. She slides the front entrance open and waits along with you.

"Momma, Momma! Ninja!"

"Hold on a moment!"

You see a few children run up to you and Haru, crowding around and cheering. Haru kneels down to pet them on their heads. About a minute later, you see a woman with long black hair and dark eyes emerge from one of the back rooms. She wears a shirt with the Uchiha crest on the front and rolled up pants. Her face is kind looking, and her skin fair; a real life Nadeshiko Yamato in every way.

"Okay, out. Go buy something on your way to Auntie. And share! Remember!"

"Yes, Momma!" the children say in unison. The woman nods and pulls money out of her pocket, handing it to the tallest child. At that, they all run off, waving at you and Haru. You both wave back before returning your attention to your host.

"That should keep them busy for a while. Well, hopefully. Shoes off, please. I just washed the floors this morning, and I'd like to keep them in order for at least the next few hours. It's just us three. Follow me when you're done."

You and Haru remove your footwear before being led into what you guess is the common room. The usual low table is present and you sit on one of the cushions placed around it. There are already three cups of warm tea set in place.

"Well...let's start with proper greetings. It's good to see you again, Haru."

"Thank you, Miss Mikoto."

"Always so formal...Auntie is fine, it's fine. But I know how you are, so...anyways. This is the fellow mentioned?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Alright. My name is Mikoto Uchiha, wife of Fugaku Uchiha and de facto head of the Uchiha Clan, the strongest clan in the Hidden Leaf."

Haru nods to you and you take off your mask, setting it on the table in front of you. "Joshua West of the Iron Country, ma'am."

"Mm-hm...you look a lot like him, but that only makes sense. Your grandfather, I mean. I saw him in action, but never did take part in the...festivities, and all of that. I'm pretty tough, but nothing like Kushina and the rest of them. She's the one who told me about you, by the way. We tell each other a whole lot."

"I see. That's fair," you say. "You're friends, right?"

"We are. Even before Naruto and Sasuke were born, and them being friends too was only natural. They have their little rivalry going on, you know. It's nice to see. But yes, I was hoping to have a chat with you, once I heard about certain things. Oh, and feel free to call me Auntie Mikoto too."

"Yes, ma'am. I mean, yes Auntie."

"There you go," she says with a smile. "Oh, and if you're wondering a few things...Itachi is the clan head on the outside, representing us in official matters. My husband is still around, but after the failed coup is serving his extended punishment...basically lifetime probation, so he has to be good or else he'll get thrown into prison for real. Sasuke is learning about everything at a reasonable pace."

"So you're the one who handles internal affairs and everything that comes with it. Itachi is head de jure."

"Yes, that's right. It's not that he isn't capable, we make all of our important decisions with input from the other. However, I have more experience with certain things, and the ability to handle the outer elements of the clan because of my connections to them through Fugaku. He and the others honestly caused a lot of trouble, and it's only thanks to the grace of heaven that they're even alive right now. But we can talk about that if we have time...I need to ask you about your observations. By now the Five Kage and the upper levels of the village know about the masked man. Did he really say he was Madara?"

"Yes, Auntie. He even told me that he met my grandfather."

"Did you see his Sharingan? What it looked like?" she asks.

"Sorry, I didn't. I just saw the ability that it displayed, which was some form of time-space ability. Sucked people into some kind of pocket dimension, and allowed him to warp himself away."

"I see. Haru, have you told him about the meeting yet?"

"Not yet, ma'am. We're meant to have a conference with the rest of our companions."

"Hm." Mikoto thinks for a moment. "Okay, then I don't want to rock the boat too much. But all the other stuff, Kushina told you about. Lord Hokage should have details on the type of Sharingan used, if his memories of that day are still intact, so we may have some sort of lead later on. I wish I could confirm it wasn't one of us, but...the story sounds very convincing. To think that our ancestor survived that fight, and is still running around today. It's a problem for the Uchiha because we've just regained public trust again, and are finally comfortable with being part of the Leaf for the first time since its inception."

"I heard about the planned coup, Auntie. From some readings, mostly. Your son Itachi and Body Flicker Shisui were the ones responsible for stopping it, right?" you ask.

"It's something that we kept as is. Truth is, there was bloodshed, but it was to erase key pillars of the clan that allowed the coup to go forward. Itachi and Shisui uncovered the plot and moved to stop it themselves, but someone else got in the way. It was one of our clan daughters, now known as a serial killer."

"She once was a revered member of the ANBU," Haru says. "Only a few of us carry on her memory, now that her legacy is stained with blood."

"Part of the way forward was to suppress the the fact that there ever was a coup, or any true unrest within the Uchiha. Itachi's hand was very nearly forced by Danzo Shimura, and Shisui was badly injured in a confrontation with coup supporters when he tried to forcibly change my husband's stance. It was Hitomi Uchiha who changed our history for us. She targeted the extremist elements over and over, and it went on to the point where she infiltrated a gathering of several of the coup leaders and killed them in plain sight. She did it on purpose, in order to gain the attention of the Leaf and show them that the coup had no teeth any longer. My husband wasn't at that meeting, and of course she made sure of that by misdirecting both Itachi and Shisui. The only ones who know the truth are myself, Itachi, Shisui, and my husband along with the obvious Leaf higher-ups. To everyone else, she suddenly became a psychopath who wanted to destroy the Uchiha just to harvest their eyes and increase her own power. Everything good about her was stripped out of history, and she even lied about her motives."

"Did she have to shoulder that kind of burden alone?" you ask.

Mikoto sips at her tea before continuing, holding the warm cup in her hands. "Itachi has always been a peaceful boy. Shisui is much the same. She loved those two like they were everything she had, and didn't want them to have to bear the burden of murdering their own countrymen. She wanted them to become the pillars of the clan, and of the village itself. More than her love for the clan, and for the Leaf...it was for those precious people that she erased herself. She lives somewhere, hunted as a criminal so that there's still something tangible to look at as the cause of those killings. The night of her massacre of the clan elders is called the Witch's Twilight, and now she's forever known as the Sharingan Witch."

"Senpai did what she had to as a shinobi," Haru says. "It is part of why we fight. Too many have sacrificed themselves for peace just to let these things crumble away. For her memory, we must endure."

"Hard choices, then..."

"Choosing to become a criminal isn't something so easy to do. The Uchiha see Jacob West as a legendary figure for not only his strength, but his commitment to honour and purpose. I can't say where you're going, but I can see that you have a lot of the same qualities he does," Mikoto says with a smile, setting her cup down. "In any case, we live on as Leaf's strongest because of who we are. And it is for that reason that we will not change."

"..." You think for a moment. If the Sharingan Witch was still active, then it didn't make sense that she wasn't visible in any recent bingo books. Her mention was reduced to one or two lines, and despite her crimes, she was never considered a high value target. From Mikoto's assessment, you can conclude that she didn't kill herself.

Is it possible she knows about your grandfather? You don't want to breach the subject just yet...some things can still be kept close for now, but this is an interesting lead. Just a lot of variables to consider, and you don't want to startle Auntie Mikoto or Haru.

"Was there anything specific you wanted to ask me, Auntie Mikoto?"

"Hm...seeing as we can't do too much about Madara, or whoever is claiming to be him, there are other things. You don't know anything extra about the two guys from the Iron, do you?"

"No, ma'am. They're unknowns to me, but the guy controlling their movements is a menace to me and my family. Luther Donovan."

"I've heard of that man. Itachi told me about his movements a while ago, and they really are shady. I don't see anything coming out of this fake diplomatic visit other than some kind of tragedy, if they're not stopped in their tracks. That could mean big trouble for the Iron and everyone else afterwards. We've been watching their movements by way of the Military Police, but nothing has come up yet. That's both reassuring and not at the same time, if you know what I mean. What else...there's actually not all that much I can think of right now. Sasuke and Itachi are out going over things before the tournament, Fugaku is at work like always, and Shisui is down at the police station working on a case."

"Has there been any movement on Lord Shimura?" Haru asks.

"Ah, right. That's another thing. Danzo is still extremely wary of the Uchiha in general," Mikoto begins, "and has been trying to monitor us while controlling our movements. Generally clan members have been keeping their distance. Unfortunately, he has his hands on a certain group called ROOT, one which Itachi used to be part of before it changed radically. ROOT has enough members that some of them have infiltrated important Leaf clans and institutions. They call themselves the unseen pillars of the Leaf, or its roots, as you might have guessed from the name. Danzo has always been dabbling in the darkness ever since the passing of Lord Tobirama, and the selection of Lord Sarutobi as his successor before his passing. We don't know exactly what it is he does, since he's kept Itachi at arms' length ever since the Witch's Twilight. But we do know that he's a nationalist and that he has a particular dislike of you and your grandfather."

"Same as Cloud, then."

"Yes, that's right. Some of the Leaf leaders who take a harder line agree with him to some extent, like the Hyuuga elders. However some of that is tempered by the upcoming resurgence of the Uzumaki and Senju clans. It sounds weird, but Tsunade got the idea to harvest genetic material - really, eggs - from herself and Kushina in order to do research with Orochimaru. Don't ask me what crazy, icky stuff they might have been up to, but they did successfully get children from willing surrogate mothers, children who are at least in part Uzumaki and Senju. They said that they can't scale anything up yet and that it's still a big secret overall, but apparently the technology is working. Danzo, because he's such a war hawk, wants to use it to bring back the lost art of Wood Release."

"That might be dangerous," you say.

"Definitely, especially if it gets away from us or misused."

"Miss Mikoto. That...program was still classified and only open to ranking members of the Advanced Research Committee, which includes Itachi Uchiha and by extension yourself as outside bodies."

"That's right, yes. Did I miss something, Haru? I thought we were allowed to disclose with authorization from the Hokage's Office, which Kushina is a part of. You yourself serve as the standard for authorization of classified material just by being here," Mikoto says.

"When did Lord Shimura request access to the classified material?" Haru asks.

"A month ago. He's allowed to ask through any authorized ranking member, and it's more than likely that he pestered Lord Sarutobi to have a look, which is why he's off spouting nonsense about new eras and revivals and other garbage. I cannot stand him..."

"And the diplomats arrived around two weeks after that," Haru mutters. "And the lateral movement means that..."

"Haru. Something's wrong," you say. "Someone said something they weren't supposed to."

"Part of a much larger play," she replies. "It's too coincidental to not line up. A nationalist like Lord Shimura should have acted faster. He's been deceived by the other things going on because..."

"He's in the midst of his own framework. Oh, fucking hell. He leaked it."

"What?" Mikoto asks. "Even if..."

"It's getting worse and worse by the second. We can't panic though, just manage. Still have until after the tournament week which is a while away...hopefully nothing happens before then," you say to Auntie Mikoto. "We'd better move out and see if we can do anything before Ritsu's debriefing. Sorry, Auntie."

"It's alright. I'm actually glad you're on the ball like this. I didn't think Danzo would go that far...well, I know better now, and so will the rest of the clan. Thanks for opening my eyes up to it. You kids get a move on. But come by soon, I'm sure the boys would love to meet you."

You all stand up and Mikoto gives both you and Haru smothering hugs. Putting on your mask, you head back onto the streets and consider your options.

"Lady Kushina is still available for the day, if you wish to inform her of this latest news. I apologize for not figuring it out sooner, sir."

You pat her head gently. "Don't blame yourself. You've been amazing, Haru...thank you for all of this."

"Thank you, sir."

"Hm...what should we do first, though? I feel like we might want to slide all of the pieces together before we take any action. We still have time, but how much is in question now."

---

[] Head back home and get Ritsu's story. It might be an important piece to consider before you take any sort of action.

[] Go and see Kushina. She should probably know about the information that's possibly been leaked to a foreign nation, namely yours.

[] Other option (write-in).

Those Called "Cocoa" (Lore)
Lore: Those Called "Cocoa"

The traditional dynamics within the shinobi world changed with the introduction of foreign peoples, who may have existed in small enough quantity within the original work but are explicitly featured here.

The geography of this world holds differences compared to other versions of the same. The unnamed, landlocked continent now has a significant number of waterways and lock systems. Sea travel is adequate and frequent to the point of limited naval warfare, and shinobi skills have most vessels focused on either defense or speed as a result. Shinobi can conduct large scale battles over water. Mist reforms included investment in such areas as part of marine operations. The elite shinobi codenamed "Blues" is listed as the top ranking brass beneath the Mizukage for said area.

Identification of persons has also become significant. To that end, a word has come up frequently in this iteration of the world, which is kokoahito. It is made from cocoa, romanized, and -hito, which is person in common tongue (Japanese). The use of modern and traditional Japanese, with all the styles therein, are adjusted according to person. Most times instead of -san, or -sama, the English equivalent of sir, ma'am, master, or mistress are used within the narrative. Lord and Lady are also used, frequently for those of different rankings. The difference between lords as in Kage and lords as in clan heads or other leaders, is implicit.

Kokoahito are known outside of the setting as those from the African diaspora, here coming from the versions of western nations they would be primarily African-American. Because of their late adoption of common tongue, their speech is slightly different from the rest of the continent. Those of Lightning Country, the origin of the dark-skinned peoples native to the continent, don't have any official term to describe themselves but are sometimes called raihito, or Lightning people, and often called kumohito, or cloud people after the shinobi village. The reason for the use of the specific term kokoahito comes from the lack of understanding of western racism in-universe, where the use of the words "black" and "white" to describe persons and skin tones are unhelpful and confusing to the vast majority of the continent's inhabitants. Thus the word came out of a need to distinguish between people who were not of Lightning, but also not the gaijin who at this point are traditionally fair-skinned members of the Caucasian sphere - but the term can encompass others. Those who come from the Original World, which is analogous to Africa and the Asian Far West/Middle East, are called the original people, or gennohito.

Typically the differences between those native to Lightning and those from the far west in Iron have led the former to be dismissive of the latter. People outside of the conflict sphere aren't able to tell the difference consistently without some focus and enough time spent in the company of either party. Otherwise, the issue is solved by asking routine questions. While traditionalists don't mind, others who are wary of the Cloud due to its recent arms stocking have a dim attitude towards members of the area. The kokoahito, with a fresh start in the region, have gained an overall reputation of trustworthiness and cooperation. Although there is the presence of modern-style racism, it is largely restricted to members of the upper crust. Exclusion is largely still tied to xenophobia by way of clans.

The use of the term "cocoa people" started off as a non-offensive means of describing those of a darker complexion who didn't hail from the continent proper. Legend says that it was originally the work of small children who didn't know how else to describe a person they talked to, and the name stuck as time went on. The term itself is again specific enough, as those who speak primarily in another foreign tongue such as English are identified as gaikokujin. This is over the commonly used term of gajin, which due to long standing tradition is reserved for those of much lighter complexions.

Episode 3.10: Brave New World
You think for a moment before coming to a decision. Not the fastest, but the best move out of everything you can see. A quick check of your watch tells you that it's getting late in the morning. The girls are probably up. Hopefully talking about last night as much as they can, without you in the room.

The understanding you've come to is, that as much as you try to be understanding and caring, you're a man and you've never been sexually abused. Shared trauma isn't a reason on its own to leave them to figure it out together, but there are things you cannot begin to understand and thus cannot start to fix on your own. The link between Hannah and Ritsu isn't strange, or wrong. But it's complicated, and has a lot of layers to it that you can't carelessly pry at.

For a moment, you wonder about yourself, and the prospect of relationships. Something for later.

"Let's go home. I'll help you with brunch, Haru."

"I don't want to put any work on your shoulders, sir."

"I'm insisting here," you say as you walk side by side.

She nods, relenting. "Understood. Thank you for your assistance, sir. If I might suggest today's menu?"

"You're in charge. I'll work with what you've got."

"Of course, sir." You almost make it to the edge of the district before another ANBU stops in front of you. A fairly muscular man with one of those half shirts that shows off his midriff through gaps in his armor. Some of the women tilt their heads to get a good look as they pass. His hair is brown and goes backwards in a wave pattern.

The man in the wolf mask nods towards Haru, then you. "Morning."

"Good morning, Captain Taro. How might we assist?" Haru asks.

"No, no. And stop with that captain thing, you know we're not on that kind of ground."

"My apologies."

"You're Duo, then," he says to you. His gaze falls towards your left side and you follow it in confusion. "Things going okay?"

"Yeah, pretty much. Nothing to really report," you say casually.

"Great. Make sure you keep it in check, yeah?"

"Sure." You have no idea what he's talking about.

"Anyways, I saw you around and just wanted to check in. Just remember to keep an eye out for the goons mentioned, and any shenanigans from foreigners. Oh, and Shisui Uchiha wanted to see you later, Haru."

"What time, Captain?"

He grumbles quietly at that. "Some time this evening. Preferably between five and six or so?"

"Understood. I'll make the arrangements."

"Good. See you guys later, then."

"Good morning, Captain." He shakes his head before disappearing in a swirl of leaves.

"Haru? You okay?"

"Even the ranks of ANBU aren't safe from nice guys...I mean, sorry, sir."

"No, it's okay. Go ahead and say what you need to," you assure her. "Actually, before that...what was Taro talking about? Keeping what in check?"

"Oh...that's because of your backstory. It makes sense to create one so that nobody is truly suspicious at first, and then we have other layers to reinforce your identity within the village. It's simple enough protocol, sir. It's just that...um."

"Is it classified?" you ask.

"Sir, the backstory selection is random. It's a pool of...ideas. From Lord Hokage himself. And...um, I'm sorry. But your identity of Duo is...uh...he's got a sort of...syndrome."

"What."

"I'm sorry, if I knew I would have suggested redrawing, but your identity means that you have some sort of condition, and it seals away a, quote, 'wicked power' inside of your left arm. I'm sorry, sir."

You sigh, looking at your left hand. "That's crazy. You said the Hokage did this?"

"Yes, sir. He regularly enjoys flexing his...creative muscle. He has a certain legendary technique that is...it's legendary, but it's also not...not feasible to recall by name all at once, sir. The ultimate technique that he used to create the Miracle of Kannabi."

"Ah."

"It's called..." Haru coughs once, clearing her throat. "Spiralling Flash Super Round Dance Howl: Style Three."

"..."

"Sir...if you say it, I won't tell a soul."

"..."

"..."

You look to the sky. "Your Hokage...is a dork."

"...I know, sir."

A sigh escapes your lips. "Let's go home. By the way, what was it you were going to say about Taro?"

"I said I didn't want to go out with him. He's not my type," Haru says as you finally leave the Uchiha District together.

"Took it hard?"

"Extremely, sir."

"How long has it been?"

"Two months, sir."

"Yeah, he'll get over it eventually. We guys usually do."

"Are you speaking from experience, sir?"

You take a moment. "Yeah. You could say that much."

---

Hikari is outside waiting for you both as you return. She salutes and Haru rubs her head affectionately.

"Sir, ma'am. I'm currently on standby for privacy reasons."

"Girls wanted to have a talk," you say as you remove your mask. "That's fine. They okay?"

"It seemed to be so, sir."

"You're relieved for now, Hikari. Thank you for your assistance," Haru says.

"Ma'am. Thank you. Permission to speak, ma'am."

"Yes, Hikari."

"I decided on a location and time for our outing. In two days, Wednesday. 1pm."

"Understood. We will make final arrangements to that end."

"Ma'am. Thank you. Sir, thank you for the opportunity. I hope I did well."

You nod. "You did great. Thanks for your help, Hikari. Stay safe out there."

"Sir. Please be safe also, sir. Returning to designated rendezvous area. Awaiting orders."

"Dismissed, Hikari."

"I read, ma'am. Good afternoon." Hikari salutes crisply before bounding off through the trees.

"A little tightly wound," you remark. "But she's nice."

"She does her best. I'm reminded of myself, sir...in a while, she'll relax and learn to adjust a bit more. I suppose we should start on cooking, sir."

"Yep. Following your lead."

You enter your temporary home again and look around, noting that the girls aren't on the ground floor yet. With a shrug, you remove your weapon and put it away before going to the kitchen. "Check in on them for me, Haru?"

"Understood, sir." You hear her head upstairs while you wash up. Haru returns a few moments later and informs you they're still having a conversation of some sort, and you nod while awaiting her orders. She gets you to chop vegetables while she cooks up some meat to go into an omelette.

"Morning, sir."

"Morning, ninja girl. Doing okay?" you say to Ritsu. She hugs you from behind and stays there as you slice into some tomatoes.

"I'm fine. Nothing...happened last night. It came close. I just..."

"I know. I don't like thinking about it either. I dunno if it's me being overprotective or something else."

"I know you care, sir." She slowly releases you and lifts her head from your back. "I have everything ready."

"You're eating first," you say. "I wanted to wait for you guys before we did anything. Lots going on that we have to put together. I'll make you some tea, so have a seat and hold tight."

"Yes, sir."

As soon as she leaves, you feel someone else press themselves into your back. The sweet smell of perfume reaches your nose, and Hannah kisses you on the cheek gently in greeting.

"Good morning, my love."

"Morning. Things okay?"

"Ritsu and I were venting. You didn't come up yourself," she points out.

"Not my place to interrupt."

"You're our leader, darling. You have-"

"I don't. There are places I shouldn't go. Maybe we are a team, but we're also a family. We're people, too. Chain of command shouldn't erase that." You set down your knife to grasp one of her hands that's around your waist. "You're allowed to be a little selfish. Remember that, alright."

"I really do love you," she says gently. "Thank you...I try to look my best, but I'm still coping with everything."

"I love you right back. Take your time, Hannah. We're both here for you."

"Yes." She gives you another soft kiss on the cheek before releasing you. "Breakfast, then business?"

"Uh-huh. Things are getting crazy," you reply as you finish with the vegetables. Haru takes the bowl from you and starts to mix it in with the other ingredients. "It's about time to compare notes. Haru and I learned a few things this morning from our trip to the Uchiha District."

"Did you meet with Itachi, then?" Hannah asks as she sits down.

"He was out. We talked to Auntie Mikoto instead, since she's the one doing the heavy work for the clan."

"Auntie, huh. Building yourself a harem of cougars at this rate."

You shake your head. "Point is, she's not sure of who the masked man could really be either, since I didn't get a good look at his eyes - or really eye - back then. Like I said, we'll eat and then start talking."

Haru finishes cooking and serves your food, contenting herself with a cup of tea while the rest of you eat. It's relatively quiet today...everyone's probably doing mental checks before you start speaking in earnest. As the three of you finish, Haru takes away your plates and serves tea. She then starts to talk about the summit.

None of you interrupt as she speaks, and you come away with several notable things. The Sand is on the ropes, desperate and willing to do a lot to get back on their feet. Money is distressingly tight, but they won't part with any significant assets including Gaara. Everyone is aware of Luther Donovan. That means Yamada and Henson, too; the mess with the Mist is cleared up. The Kage are aware that you're with Hannah, but apparently know nothing about Ritsu. This is something of importance because it means that you have the option of keeping her hidden for the next item, a meeting with the Five Kage themselves. Akatsuki is also a big item, with their existence becoming a bigger problem now that criminal organizations are said to be very interested in them.

The pictures you get from Haru's description of the meeting are very distinct. The Tsuchikage is shrewd and keeps his cards close to his chest. He has a dogged interest in protecting and preserving his village, but despite being aggressive he isn't openly hostile and can be swayed, provided the incentives are sweet enough. The Raikage is the same as ever and hates your face. The Kazekage is on the edge, a hardline utilitarian who needs a boost and also doesn't like you because he has no idea what you can do. He's prone to doing and saying unreasonable things, and has a habit of treating people like tools. The Mizukage is interesting in a lot of ways. She's respectful of others, but more than willing to be firm and direct, not backing down from a challenge easily. She's also heavily invested in peaceful efforts and stopping war from breaking out. Easily one of the most reasonable of the five leaders and an ally of justice. The Hokage is as you expected, a charismatic and friendly man backed with terrifying strength. He's seeking out a peaceful era as well, trying to balance that effort with the prosperity of the village.

One of the Sand's escorts at the meeting stands out...Pakura was a name you knew in passing. She also had a strong desire for peace and made it known through the things she said. The Kazekage scolded her, but he in turn was reprimanded directly by the Hokage. Someone like that would be a great ally and a big help to actually stablizing the Sand. Maybe she could be Kazekage one day, though it's unlikely. It would at the least be better than the current situation.

"I would like to meet with them," Hannah says. "It's up to our darling in the end, but my suggestion is go without Ritsu present. An attempt to keep her hidden is best, I feel. And if anything should go wrong, our hands will be free to retaliate."

"Very much agreed," Ritsu says, not missing a beat. "We should take every opportunity to keep ourselves ahead of the curve. A social specialty shinobi would be useful for analysis, however, against the likes of the Five Kage, she would also be a liability in an already hostile environment."

"I had the exact same thought," you say. "So we're looking at a vote of going without Ritsu present. We'll finalize it after we get some more breakdown. I don't like how the Sand looks right now. They might be planning on making a desperate move, even if it comes down to screwing up the tournament. This is about generating business above all else."

"I am quite interested in speaking with Mei Terumi," Hannah says. "Now, more than ever. I don't expect her to abandon everything that she's worked for without extremely good cause, but I am willing to bet that she would take on some risk to assist us if we do enough convincing."

"She's very interested in change," Ritsu follows up. "And maritime options are valuable."

"Thinking ahead? Home office?" you ask.

"A starting point for operations, maybe? We shouldn't be hasty, sir. But ideas are flowing."

"Yup, nothing wrong with planning out a few things. I like the sound of it, either way...alright, we have that piece. Thanks a lot, Haru."

She nods. "Of course, sir. I'm glad I could help."

"Alright...my turn," Ritsu says. "So, as we know. I made contact with Yamada last night. He opened up to me about a few things...he's indifferent to a lot of things, indulges in casual bigotry, wants a so-called normal life, etcetera. Donovan has successfully manipulated Henson and has him dancing at any tempo he chooses. Apparently Henson is bait for something, which they haven't discussed. It's between him and Donovan."

"Figures," you say.

"I successfully seduced him, and he brought me up to his room. The technique I used delayed the effects of his alcohol consumption, so he felt fine enough to drink past his normal limits. When he tried to get intimate with me, the effects piled on until he passed out in my lap. I took the opportunity after that to apply a proper genjutsu while he slept, then I went through his personal effects and found several notes that he put down. These are in the detailed scroll that I have with me." Ritsu sets the scroll on the table and unseals it in front of everyone. "His relationship with Henson is strained and he only puts up with him on orders. He's slept around with several women on the pretense of business deals - by the by, he's married and thinking about having children with his current wife."

"How pleasant," Haru says.

"Yes, indeed. Concerning Donovan and Henson, he spoke about a nationalist group called the Iron's Shadow-"

"What...Ritsu. Ritsu, are you absolutely sure?" you ask, horrified.

"Yes, sir. The words came from his lips, and they were written in his original notes."

"Mom, Dad, Grams, Gramps, and Mifune...a lot of people put their necks on the line to completely erase them. Now they're back and Donovan is running them. No, no. Not him running them. Trying to use them for his own ends. Fucking hell."

"You don't look well," Hannah says, concerned. "Even worse than at the initial mention of Luther Donovan."

"Ritsu...what was your first read on these guys?"

"They're political extremists at best. From what I see...they can easily pass as terrorists," she says.

"There was a very violent uprising back when Mom and Dad were younger. It took everyone's strength to completely wipe them out, including the old man back before he became a shinobi god. Iron's Shadow is an extremist faction of the Iron Country, formed from rebellious samurai and other bigoted, radical elements. Someone brought them back from the grave."

"A man in a cloak. Faceless, with a deep voice. Yamada said someone like that met with Henson, and that he was an element of the Iron's Shadow. I only gave it my full attention just now..."

"Madara is behind the Iron's Shadow. He's playing Donovan like a damn fiddle, probably has been for a long time. I can't fucking believe this. It has to be him. It only makes sense that someone with the kind of knowledge and connections...which makes what Haru and I found out even worse. Danzo Shimura and Donovan are connected."

"What?" Hannah chokes out. "But what could possibly connect those two? Madara?"

"It's worse than that, ma'am," Haru answers. "Danzo has leaked, or possibly has been leaking routinely, secrets on Leaf research. Lord Orochimaru, between here and his base in the Hidden Sound, has been performing experiments with, as merely one goal, the aim of helping to revive depopulated clans such as the Uzumaki and Senju. The latter have had their blood heavily diluted thanks to generations of movement, and the former experienced genocide. As you may know, the lost secret art of Wood Release lies solely in the Senju bloodline as far as any record can tell us. Villages have done extraordinary things just to get their hands on some kind of DNA to experiment with."

"Donovan and Shimura are exchanging notes," Ritsu says with panic. "Oh, god."

"The secrets of Wood Release are going right back to Donovan through the Iron's Shadow. And to Madara as well, if we have all of this information correct." You slam your fist onto the table.

"Calm, my darling. Remember what you say to us," Hannah tells you. You nod and take a deep breath in to calm down.

"Never panic. Just manage."

"That's it. Slow breaths. We're not done for yet. Haru, what is our current situation?"

"From our monitoring of everything, there is no movement, ma'am. The Military Police are on high alert and ANBU is patrolling at an increased rate. Factions loyal to the past and present Hokage are also on high alert, filtering down any reports to us. In addition, the Mizukage has agreed to report any suspicious elements her and her team discovers to us as soon as possible. We are employing every possible set of eyes and ears to keep things in check."

"Ritsu," Hannah continues, "what do you gather about possible movement from the notes you've taken?"

"Nothing much, ma'am. I don't know what the timeline is on Henson since there's zero communication between him and Yamada. But indications are that nothing is going to happen just yet, so at the least it looks like it won't interrupt the tournament."

"Could be timed for maximum drama. What goes down in the Sand will depend on how Gaara does," you point out. "If he goes down like a chump, it's going to make a deal with the Iron look really really good, no matter how illegal it might be. That so called deal could be parlayed into Madara having pull on an entire hidden village, which changes the game entirely. I don't think even Yukari could have seen this coming."

"Internal politics are complicated like that, sir," Haru says. "Even from our perspective, we could have never conceived of all of this happening, and all at once. On its own, it's merely an inconvenience. Put together with everything else...to say that the First's dream has transformed into a nightmare would be a mere understatement."

"Tournament opening round is in a few days. What's the latest we can push a meeting to?" you ask Haru.

"Thursday at the latest. The Kage want the extra day before the tournament to talk to their shinobi and suggest adjustments."

"And it's Monday now. Dad did say Mondays were the worst, and damn if he wasn't right before this mess. Ah..." You rub at your temples. "Let's sort ourselves out here and now. Dealing with some terrorists and all that..."

"We should decide on whether or not we'll attend the second meeting with the Five Kage, and how many of us will attend. Each of us carries a specific risk and will alter the movement of any talks. We can go as far as having exactly one of us attend alone in order to avoid any division in terms of focus. The recommendations of myself and Ritsu are that Joshua and I attend together," Hannah states. "Haru, thoughts?"

"No additional suggestions, ma'am. Your thoughts are sound and I agree with them on the basis that you have provided."

"What about the amount of information we should disclose?"

"Hm. That is all dependent on how much you want to involve yourselves in national affairs. The more information you divulge on your own, the more responsibility you take. At this point in time, the conclusions drawn from this combination of intelligence lies solely with the people in this room. I am obligated to deliver a report of some kind as per your arrangement with the Hokage's Office via Lady Kushina...however in this case, it is stipulated that you are allowed to withhold or classify information that would cause damage to the Leaf or any associated elements. We also recognize that there are things, such as your SOP, that are and will remain unknown to us. You are under zero obligation to violate OPSEC, and I say this as an individual."

"That is to say that information transfer and release are at our discretion," Ritsu concludes.

"Briefly, that is correct."

"We can also withhold information from the Five Kage. They won't really know anything and suspicion of our motives are going to be part and parcel for the meeting," you say. "It's an easy enough thing to cover. There's going to be zero talk of Wood Release unless the Hokage breaches the subject himself, and he might be a little eccentric, but not a moron. The mention of terrorist elements? That should be in play."

"Once I return with the information, you'll have the backing of the Hokage and his office as far as any verification goes," Haru says.

"Makes it harder for them to jab at us," you reply. "Sorting out the info will take a bit, so Thursday makes a lot of sense as a landing point." You pick up your mug of tea and drink it down, letting out a breath afterwards. "Heavy work. Let's see what we're doing."

---

[] The meeting will involve a set number of your team. Notifying the participants in advance is the first step; there are advantages and disadvantages to differing numbers. Pick any number of people to attend.
-[] Joshua
-[] Hannah
-[] Ritsu

---

[] Disclosure of information. Haru has said that the more you talk, the more responsible you make yourselves for what happens, and it's probably that each of the Kage will lean on you for their own reasons as a result.
-[] Full disclosure. The unfiltered option that allows for more angles of attack from each party, but also opens you up to the most aggression and scrutiny. An active stance that allows each party full movement with regards to the present danger.
-[] Direct relevance. Balanced and allows some movement if you think things are getting too hot. The five powers will have to navigate some of the details themselves, but they should get the bigger picture from what you say to them.
-[] Limited discussion. The defensive option, and also the least friendly overall. With the Leaf holding the most valuable cards, you have the ability to keep things down to a need to know basis. This removes the bulk of responsibility from you, but also limits the sight of the shinobi powers with regards to the present danger.
-[] Custom write-in. Dictate what is given and withheld.

[] Customize the entire meeting to your liking. Haru will provide the appropriate commentary (write-in).

a/n: wrt meeting track: this is set to approval voting; picking the fixed options and adding details as participants see fit. These are subject to appropriate consequence. Haru is your check against relevant narrative issues. This is, relatively speaking, part of a critical series of events, and you are able to meaningfully impact them with your own power.

"I'm sorry, if I knew I would have suggested redrawing, but your identity means that you have some sort of condition, and it seals away a, quote, 'wicked power' inside of your left arm. I'm sorry, sir."

Clearly time to invest in a cursed seal

Expect an update today at some point. Might be lore. Unlikely tho.

Any burning questions can be asked whenever and I'll put them in some notepad file to answer later. Also story only thread is up with ch 1 if you're into that.

Cursed seals are [redacted] due to plot.

Episode 4.0: Stand Unrivaled
"Okay, so we're going with what the girls have suggested. It'll be myself and Hannah there. At the same time, we'll take the middle road. Provide the most important information as needed, don't answer too many irrelevant questions, and keep an eye on the mood. Any tweaks to that gameplan?" you ask.

"None whatsoever. I'm in full agreement," Hannah says.

"In agreement here as well, sir. Very reasonable," Ritsu follows.

"I see no problems with this course of action, personally speaking," Haru adds in. "I have no further suggestions to make."

"Great. We're all in agreement. Two people, heads above water. Haru, relay our intent. We'll aim for Thursday morning."

"Understood. I'll have the location and details for you by Wednesday morning at the latest."

"Thanks. As for us...we're gonna take a much deserved break and catch up on some things. I'm gonna go and get to reading, maybe take a nap. You guys take it easy too, alright?"

"Are you sure, sir? We can always do reconnaissance," Ritsu points out.

"We can. We can do a lot of things, maximize our time. But I don't want us to do that. Being in mission mode all the time takes a lot more out of you than you realize. I don't want you to burn out, and I also want you to take some time to connect with yourself and others. Take it easy, if only because I ask."

"I understand. I didn't mean to sound like I was imposing."

You nod. "Don't worry about it. I knew what you meant. Listen, part of changing the world is changing our attitude towards it. And part of that means changing your routines. Find your own flow and stick to it. That's how we can really make a difference."

"Yes, sir."

"Good. Now go decompress. Haru and I will handle cleanup."

"Yes, sir. Thank you."

"I'll be upstairs myself, darlings. There are some notes I need to go over in the reading room," Hannah says as she pushes her chair backwards. "Thank you for breakfast, both of you. It was lovely."

"It really was good, sir, Haru."

"No problem," you say with a smile.

"It was my honour and pleasure," Haru says with a nod. "Thank you for your praise."

Ritsu and Hannah head upstairs, while you and Haru wash the dishes and cups from your meal. Haru leaves as soon as you're done to deliver your message and check up on a few things. She says that she'll be back in the evening after her meeting with Shisui, and you go over protocol one more time before deciding you'll stay in until she returns.

As she checks out, you grab a cool glass of water and head upstairs to your room. It's in the middle of two others, the reading and writing room on the left nearest the stairs, where Hannah is currently. Furthest right and closest to the washroom is the room that Hannah and Ritsu share.

You decide to get down to your reading in earnest. Current material on the five shinobi nations is on your bed in the form of scrolls and books, delivered by Haru. You wished you had that one book of your grandfather's...it held a lot of secrets and was where you first learned shinobi arts from. The methods were advanced and unconventional in ways that would have baffled most shinobi. Hannah also explained to you that she used a modified method of seals, learned from her old teacher. He never explained their differences to her, or where he got them from, but you suspect that they were lifted in part from your grandfather's teachings.

He went a lot of places on his journey. You wonder how far you'll go. Or if you'll even get that far. He defeated the Nine-Tails by himself, something that only Hashirama before him had done. It's possible that he had the strength to seal away all the other tailed beasts. Maybe even take over the shinobi nations by force and rule everything. He was that strong. So, even before taking his disappearance into account, why didn't he? What was his reason? Was he worried about how ethical it would be? Did he think it was immoral?

There's so much that you don't know about him, or about what he tried to do. All you know is that you have a similar power inside of you, and without his guidance, it's all up to you to decide what happens next.

You pick up one of your books and take a seat at the nearby desk, opening it up. Documents on the warring states.

Good to start somewhere.

---

After reading, you take a short nap and wake up a while later. It's only late afternoon, and after clearing your head you walk downstairs to get a snack.

"Joshua, sir. Is everything alright?"

"Hm? Yeah, just had a nap like I said earlier," you say to Ritsu as she emerges from her room. "Yourself?"

"Fine, sir. I tried meditating and it didn't go so well."

"Ah, it happens." You rub her head gently. "You'll get it after a while, don't worry."

She smiles and leans into your touch. "Thank you, sir. Have you seen Miss Hannah?"

"No, I haven't. Sounds like she's still doing her readings. You need her?"

"Just for a question."

"Hey, go for it. She's not too cranky when studying," you say with a chuckle. "Especially if it's a small thing. You want anything from the kitchen?"

"No, sir. Thank you."

"Got it. You go on," you say as you head down the stairs. Ritsu knocks on the door and you hear a faint response before it opens. You reach the kitchen, look at what's in the fridge, and decide on a warm sandwich. Oven would serve your purposes well.

"Oh, don't even have to make one. Haru thinks of everything." You take one of the sandwiches already on the shelf and close the door, then make sure the oven's hot. Sandwich goes in, wait, then sandwich comes out. Crispy bread and all.

"Nice." You grab a plate and slice apart your snack, then go to town. While you eat, you think about what you want to do for the rest of the day.

---

[] Talk to Hannah. She's been working on something and you're curious as to what. Besides that, you think she'd like to speak to you about the past few days and everything else.

[] Talk to Ritsu. She's been through quite a bit in the past few weeks, and you want to make sure she's feeling okay.

[] Maybe have a group meeting. You could try talking things through to make sure you're all on the same page. Plus, it's a good way to bond.

[] Training. There's a safe area not far from the cabin where you can get some stuff done. (Roll d100 to train any stat that is already at 10, with a bonus technique to be added later. 50 is the threshold. Level of success is determined by final total, divided into four sections from rank A-D. S is 100-90, A is 90-80, B is 80-70, C is 70-60, D is 60-50. Voters can choose techniques in the appropriate zones or leave it to QM decision.)
-[] Custom schedule. You have a few hours left in the day (write in).
-[] Training day. Increase your physical stats. Get +1 to any stat of your choosing that is not at 10. Roll d100 to train stats at 10.
-[] Research day. Improve your current abilities or create new ones.
--[] Improve a non-taijutsu technique by one level, unlock a new form of one non-taijutsu technique, or gain one element level.
--[] Create the basis of a new technique to be finished later.
---[] Train alone.
---[] Train with a friend or two. Your companions will gain at the same rate as you where applicable, and there may be bonuses that come along with them.
----[] Hannah
----[] Ritsu

[] Relax until the next day. You don't need to do much right now.

[] Custom (write in).

a/n: wrt training, it's simplified like this for reasons. Mainly flashy ones. Also I won't be using rolls for any combat situations if that seems like a worry. Any questions, you know the drill.
