What would you do when you find yourself waking up as one of the heroines a JRPG that you used to obsessively play? What if you know almost everything about it and are confident that you can be strong no matter what? What if you know the idenitity of the Hero and know the places of his powerups?

What would you do then? Go out and explore the world?

There are Demons rampaging across it.

Help the people?

They're not struggling, not really, in fact, it can even be argued that they're thriving.

Then?.. What about making such a big mistake that it ended up killing the prophesized Hero, but… everything continued even with his death, there are no resets, not here- the world is still there, the Kingdoms are still standing, and now a Demon Horde is about to descend onto them.

Well, now what?
Chapter 1
Beads of sweat ran down my cheeks and fell to the blue training mat below, the rapier in my hand was steady, held strong between my fingers as I circled my opponent. There is no one here but us and our respective maid and butler, here, in this training room that's nigh empty save for the mat and the people standing on top of it- there was no risk of danger, just pain, I knew that so I-

My opponent charged before me-

"Hup!" I jumped back and readied my stance.

A slice-

In response? I parried-

My rapier moved sideward and forced the arch of my brother's swing to the left, a successful parry- one that my brother, unfortunately, recovered quickly from as he pulled his arm back before stabbing forward-

I put some strength into my heel and dodged to the left, sidestepping the pointed tip of his diamond-blue sword and moving away from the range of my brother's preferred hand before retaliating with my own attack, a slash, one that didn't need any fancy, long-winding movement, just a flick of my wrist and-

He parried it heavily.

"Aa-" I couldn't finish my yelp as pain erupted from my wrist because my brother was already on his way towards me, his larger, bulkier frame charging head on and threatening me with a tackle that'll send me to the mats beneath our feet.

Another wave of strength came to my heel and I pivoted leftward and away from the direction of Bismuth's tackle, he stopped and twisted his body, using the halted momentum to send a packed punch my way.

I grit my teeth and weaved, moving downward and falling even lower as gravity held onto my body and made it fall, I let it happen and used the velocity to strengthen my blow as I extended my leg and sent out a low kick that used all my weight towards Bismuth's shin, he jumped just in time and I held back a curse as my muscles tensed once more before I forced my entire leg to the floor- my feet met the ground and I kicked myself backward, way before my brother crushed my feet.

Too much momentum- that was my thought as my body moved further backwards than I intended it to, I took a lungful of air before relaxing my body and pushing my arms ahead of me, seconds later, my body arched down and my palms connected to the surface of the training mat and I reflexively tensed my muscles before pushing myself upward and into a backflip.

I saw my brother run over to me just as I rolled in the middle of the air, I readied my rapier and prepared a retaliatory strike, a slash, that was the best move I could do at this very moment since I couldn't waste time for any other attack.

I landed on my toes and immediately twisted my body to the right before letting the momentum carry me into a spin, I extended my hand and held out my rapier, the sharpened edge of its blade directly facing the spot that I knew where my brother was-

CLANG

Sparks flew out as both our Pledges met and struck one another.

Knowing that I was still winded from the acrobat move that I had just done, Bismuth grinned and rushed forward to force me to be on the defensive, he slashed over and over again while I blocked- I tried to find an oppurtunity for a parry, for a single chance where his sword could run down the length of my blade and onto my rapier's cross-shaped guard.

The oppurtunity couldn't have come soon enough but it eventually did, after a long exchange of blows that got us to circle the training room, Bismuth made a mistake and went for a heavy strike that utilized his entire shoulder, he probably wanted to finish the fight and assumed that I was low on stamina.

I was gonna prove him wrong.

My elbow rotated to get my rapier to meet the blow head on and I held back a grin when I saw my brother's shocked face, then I forced my rapier upward and slid his sword to the bottom of my blade, the sharp edge met my weapon's 2 inch thick guard with a loud clang.

Then, using my entire bicep, I moved my arm sideways for a parry and to prepare a diagonal, downward slash-

I wheezed-

My body lost its strength and I felt my knees buckle from my own weight-

I stared up, "W-"

A kick to my chin sent me flying backward.

"Come on Neo," I heard Bismuth say with a chastising tone, "we've talked about this a dozen times already, you have a rapier, you don't use long, flashy attacks unless it's your only choice." I tried to reply with some sort of sarcastic rebuke but he spoke before any words left my mouth, and shit, it was criticism too, "you tried to run my sword through the entire length of your blade, you know, the 5 feet long one?"

I grit my teeth and recalled my Pledge, "you're an asshole," I started as I pressed my palms against the mat and pushed myself upward, when I was fully upright, Bismuth rolled his eyes, clearly mocking me, "see? You wanted me to see you rolling your eyes!" I said heatedly, "we're supposed to be practicing here! You can't just pull off dirty tricks like that out of the blue and expect me to somehow know that you'll do it beforehand!"

"Neo, Demons won't care in a real fight-"

"You're not a Demon!" I glared at him, "and this is supposed to be a sparring match practicing our swords, not- not everything else!"

"We both know that you would've lost regardless if I kicked you or not," both his stare and his tone were dry as the desert sand.

"That's not the point! We should've kept it going for as long as possible-" I tried to say but he just shook his head.

"I was the one expecting you to pull off a dirty trick, I was waiting for it but it never came," he said with a disappointed tone, "Neo, you're better than this,"

I scowled, "we agreed- don't cut me off," Bismuth held his mouth, "we agreed that we were gonna use our Pledges didn't we?" He nodded, "and? What happened?"

"I'm teaching you how to fight-"

"You aren't, you're pushing me down instead of getting me used to moving around in a life and death situation, everything would've been fine if you just took a step back when I parried your sword instead of kicking me in the stomach Bis," He looked guilty for once and I saw the opportunity to press his own issues so I did, "your training as a soldier is affecting you! You can take a breather! Step back and retreat! Wait for another fight-"

"No, not anymore-" Bismuth argued, "the Hero has been dead for a long time Neo, and the Demons are starting to get more numerous, we need to start risking our lives against the Demons or else our battles against them would start having more casualties!"

He glared at me like I was the one who's at fault and… well, I hate to admit it but I was.

"Because those bastards like to hit their prey's backs, there's no more retreating, Neo, not anymore." He shook his head and walked off, "people can't run anymore, they need to keep fighting, risk their life till the end or else it'll just give the Demons an opportunity to attack when they're recovering."

I stayed silent, my own guilt eating me up because… I sighed, "sorry," I said, I didn't dare face Bismuth and I know that he was doing the same, "it's just that… you know, I thought that-" what? What was I thinking? That…

I could have lived a happy life by sending the hero on a quest? Because what? It would give him a power up that'll allow him to curb stomp the rest of the Demons?

"YOU FOOLISH GIRL-"

… a sigh escaped my lips, "sorry." That was really the only thing I can say.

"There's nothing we can do about it, Neophyte." I only nodded, "we move on and hold strong until another hero comes,"

"Right." I didn't want to look my brother in the eyes. Or even Zathania's for that matter.

But even then, my maid walked up to me and enveloped me in a hug, she knew that I didn't mind, hell, she was basically my pillow back when I was young. Back when the only thing I did was cry myself to sleep every night.

Back when- "You're shivering again, Neo."

"Sorry."

How many times do I have to say it till things go right again?

The walk back to my room had been spent in silence, Zath knew I preferred it that way when I was stressed and so the maid didn't start a conversation, merely walking two steps behind me, waiting for an order that will never come. Not until later at least, because the first thing I said when the double doors of my room shut behind us is, "please prepare my bath,"

Despite me saying 'please' to her, Zathania simply nodded and did her task instead of rebuking with the usual 'there is no need for pleasantries, mistress,' that she replies with, which she only ever really does knowing that it's the "polite thing to do" when dealing with a royal, I know that she needs to do it in order to keep up a habit of respect, or else she runs the risk of accidentally being too familiar with another royal or noble that isn't me.

It's to keep herself grounded, I know it but… the distance that her words imply still hurts. We've known each other since we were kids, glued even, but the gap is still there.

Will it ever disappear?

I placed myself on the bench attached to the front of my king-sized bed and stared down at the ground; just like her, I try to remember too, to keep myself grounded and my ambition present. Everything around me, the luxury, it wasn't always like this, back before my Pledge came to me, my room was completely barren save for the bed and the curtains on the windows.

The carpet was simple back then, and certainly not the bright red, fluffy thing with a runic stone drawn onto it using gold. The runic stone was my family, the Everlast's, crest.

I stared down at it while sweat dripped down my forehead and into the carpet, staining the fabric and darkening the color, and most likely giving Zathania more work later, when she comes to my room during dinner to clean it. I would be more mindful than this usually but… I wasn't really in the mood for it, and the maid knows it so chances are, she's not even gonna react when she sees me staining the carpet and the silky fabric on the bench.

"Well, the bench would be easy to clean at least, I just need to remove the cover and be done with it." I looked up and met the speaker's eyes, wondering if I talked out loud or if it was one of her 'I'm just guessing moments'.

Zathania was staring at me with a warm gaze and an understanding smile, "come on Neo, to the bathroom, I'm cleaning you,"

I shook my head, "it's fine," I told her, "I can take care of myself, I'll call you when I can't,"

She nodded in response and moved to the side, allowing me to walk to the bathroom in silence, when I reached the open door, I turned back to her and gave her a thankful nod, "thanks, Zath."

"It is my duty as a maid and I am simply doing my job," she bowed and it was the last thing I saw before I closed the door.

I turn around and faced my way too pristine, white-shaded bathroom, colored after my namesake, Neophyte- and though it was made of marble, some of the things here, such as the cabinets and the tub, were made of the expensive jade that I was named after, it was over the top, definitely, but honestly, I didn't really care, all bathrooms are the same in the end, this one is just made with expensive stones instead of regular concrete.

Sighing, I stretched to pop my joints, the relief that came with doing so didn't do anything to help the ache that I was feeling on my chest.

Well, I've lived with the guilt for over 10 years now so there's really no point in wallowing in it any further. I slapped my cheeks and immediately felt better, "move on, move on." I said it like it was a mantra, "things are going to be fine,"

A wave of guilt washed over me and without thinking about it, I walked over to my mirror and stared at myself- the sight that greeted me was the reflection of a teenage girl with smooth, cream-colored skin, gray eyes, silver hair, and a beautiful face that wasn't mine…

It belonged to another person, once, a heroine by the name of Neophyte Astral Everlast, one of the many heroines that the chosen player character, Cedric-

The streets were filled with people, it was supposed to be my coronation, my time to shine in the spotlight and get recognized as a member of the Everlast royalty but…

"YOU KILLED HIM!"

"MURDERER!"

"HOW IS SHE STILL NOT HANGED! A ROYAL SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO LIVE AFTER KILLING THE PROPHESIZED-"

- can pick and marry on an RPG game with the same last name as this body- Everlast.

I… killed Neophyte when I took over her body as a child, the same way I- I…

… sighed. Relief came for a second but then the anger bubbled to the surface and I clenched my fist-

"Murderer." I glared at my own reflection, even if I accepted the fact that I was now Neophyte, I still couldn't get over the guilt of dooming an entire world to a demon army, "why did you think it was a good idea huh? You FUCKING-"

"Neo?"

I took a deep breath and stopped myself, "I'm fine, Zath." I said, my voice echoing inside the bathroom, she definitely heard the rest of my speech and not just my yell so by all accounts, she knew that I was not fine but she didn't need to get dragged into my issues, no matter what she says otherwise. "Don't worry about me,"

"If you say so,"

I released my breath and shook the depressive thoughts out of my head before proceeding to do my usual bathroom ritual- starting by taking off my training clothes, the sports bra went off first and was bundled up before mercilessly thrown into my laundry bucket

I unfastened the tie on the gauze around my chest- I pulled and bit by bit, the white fabric came loose, unfurling into a strip that I bundled up and threw to the nearest trash can. Next were my shorts and underwear, those were easy enough and they soon joined my bra on the laundry bucket.

I stepped closer to the bathtub and shuddered when I dipped my toes, despite my moping session, the water was still hot and a wave of euphoria washed over me as I plunged my body into the tub.

I let myself sink deep into the water until the only thing that was visible was the upper part of my face.

And slowly… a daze came over me and I stared at nothing until I snapped back when someone knocked on the door, I stared at it, waiting for whatever it is that Zathania is going to say, "Neo, you're being called for dinner,"

"Already?!" I jumped out of the water and asked before I blinked and realized that I had gotten into one of my fugues again. I cleared my throat, "sorry, that was unlady like," I said in case a family member is outside the door waiting for me.

"There are only the two of us here, Neo," Zathania said to my relief, and because of that, I'll allow her playful tone just this once. I could tell that she was smiling from my panic just now, I just know it.

Chapter 2
"I think this is a little pretentious to wear for something like dinner isn't it?" I asked Zath as she pulled on the strings of my corset, as per request, the bones were light, giving me literal breathing room because my lungs aren't getting crushed to death by the damn thing. And in exchange, I didn't look like a normal high class lady or something.

"You say that all the time," Zath replied while tying the strings to the sides of the corset, in the mirror, I could see that her face was concentrated as she made sure that each one didn't intersect and give me back problems, "and what's more, this time this actually-" I smiled as her expression twisted into one of effort while pulling on a set of strings to tie them together, I cheered her on silently until she was done, "- is validated because you have visitors,"

Zath stepped away from me to grab my dress for the night.

"Really?" I asked as I twisted my body around to get a better look at myself, despite its relative looseness to the typical noble fashion sense, with the corset on, my hourglass figure looked even more pronounced.
My shoulder length silver hair whipped back and forth as I moved my neck for a better view, and me, being the easily distracted smartass that I am, saw my hair move around and decided that it was a good idea to start a small dance by moving my hips back and forth.

Zath cleared her throat in the background and I stopped, stared at my pink face- which I would never get tired of looking at. Gorgeous. I'd kiss me. - and I met my own eyes, "you know," I started, "it's kind of weird that I'm not allowed to act like that,"

"Like what? A common street whore?" Zath said with no small amount of disdain and I had to give her a look of chastisement, she didn't meet my eyes but she did add her opinion, "mistress, you know that you're above that, please act like it, even when you don't want to,"

"Yeah, yeah," I waved my maid off, "it's not like I'm actually gonna be a whore or anything like that,"

"I will make sure that you do not end up as such," Zath retorted resolutely and I let it go, seeing as this is one of those things that the girl wouldn't budge to no matter how hard I try to convince her that I don't really care about it- then again, it's not like her saying stuff like that is abnormal, she is a high born and was raised in a noble family, much like every other maid working on the castle, because dear old Dad wouldn't have anything less.
Also, every Royal considers it an insult to hire from the lower- eh, lowerer classes, so that's why they hire the late sons and daughters of Nobles instead, after all, these guys wouldn't be able to inherit anything, so why not work in the royal castle instead?

"You're dazing off again," Zath's hands clasped both my shoulders and I frowned, "what is it that you are thinking about this time?" She asked as her hands went down my back, she paused, "wait, were you considering our conversation just now?"

"No?" I replied quickly and her hands resumed moving across my body, I know that she's just taking my measurements and all that but it's during times like these that I really feel like she's flirting with me, and the words that come out of her mouth every time she does this don't help either, "Zath," I asked, "aren't you weirded out by how touchy we get?"

"Of course not," my personal maid replied, "we used to hug as children remember? We even slept together? I feel like we crossed each other's personal boundaries several times already Neo."

Yeah… that sounds like it's one of those 'childhood friends' shit that you can usually see on shonen manga, what's next? She's gonna reveal to me that she was a boy all along? A reverse situation of the 'my friend was actually a girl?!' trope that usually happens there?

Because that would be creepy!

I had to make sure, "Zath are you a boy?"

"You've seen me naked, mistress,"

"Yeah that counts," I shrugged and flinched when my maid pinched my neck, "hey!"

"You shouldn't joke like that," she scolded, "now raise your hands, I'm putting on your dress," I did so and waited for more than a minute because Zath had to re-adjust my dress to match my corset before attaching it to the hooks of my changing room, then finally, after what felt like forever, my dress slowly came down from the ceiling and covered me, I took it upon myself to adjust my arms so that they fall into the sleeves but after that, the dress was on my body and I just let Zath work.

The maid adjusted the ribbons on my back, tying them up into a beautiful bow before fixing the rest of the dress, then she made sure that everything is straight- "We should be done," she said as she patted some parts of the dress.

Zath walked away from me when all was said and done, "and might I say, you look gorgeous, ohn, mistress," she said fancily.

I rolled my eyes, "stop it," I smiled, which she returned, "okay, so, I trust your words that I look good," Zath nodded, "but I also need to check for myself,"

"Be my guess, Neo," my maid took a step back and her black and white uniform disappeared from the reflection so that I can look at myself in all my glory.

The dress was colored in a slightly darker shade of yellow with a large black line across the stomach, separating the top and bottom- the actual dress, the bottom, had floral patterns on it, little white daisies that took up most of the space available there.

While my torso, or my top, was filled with tiny frills, which covered my chest like a curtain. In total, there are three lines of these frills running across the front of my chest while my back is open space, showing skin.

"I do look nhice," I said with a fancy voice of my own, "Dahlin, Zath-" I giggled when my maid did, "sorry, too much?"

"You sound like your sisters." She replied.

"That's both a compliment and an insult, you know that right?" I asked.

"Of course I do," Zath nodded shamelessly.

Sadly, we didn't have any more time for banter so the moment that our conversation started to lull, Zath and I went out of the changing room and back into my bedroom proper, where a wrinkled butler was waiting, the guy- who for the life of me I couldn't remember the name of, - nodded at me and said, "you look stunning mistress Neophyte,"

I smiled, "thank you," I curtsied a bow and then turned to Zath, "It's all thanks to my personal maid, she helped me pick the dress after all,"

The butler nodded, "then I give her my compliments as well," yay! I turned to her, you hear that Zath?!
"Now, let us be off, your father and his guests are waiting and you are the only one who isn't present on the table,"

I had the gall to put on a sheepish smile and rub the back of my head, saying, "sorry, I uh, took a while to change,"

"It is fine," the butler replied as if it was rehearsed.

And so, all three of us walked until we reached a set of double doors after which, the butler opened it and waited right next to the wall for me to pass, he tried to stop my personal maid from entering the dining hall but I shook my head at him.
After that, Zath and I passed through the doors and into the lavishly decorated dining hall of our castle, whereas my maid proceeded to join all the others in serving my family and their guests' food, I found myself sitting at a long ass table right next to Bismuth.

The seating on the table was arranged in a way that valued an individual's political position and power, with the King, his wife, and his concubines to our right, my lower ranking, to be married off siblings to our left, and me and the rest of the Pledge Bearers strictly in the middle.

Meanwhile, those who had good political value were sitting a little ways off to our right- just below the king, - and included among my older, non-pledge bearing family members were our guests.

I kept my face straight as I walked and observed the guests with my eyes alone, their red and black clothes and their bright yellow hair told me that they came from house Eruptia, a military house full of Pledge Bearers who mainly use Fire based Light Techniques.

Satisfied with my impromptu spying session, I pried my eyes away from them and focused on my internal reserve of Light, even though my reserve is already one of the largest in Everlast City, it was still growing larger with each passing day, and it's all thanks to this body's prodigious affinity for Light as well as my in-game knowledge on how to use and utilize it.

I looked around my fellow Pledge Bearers, spotting a few from the Eruptia family, most were guys, no surprise there, and much like the rest of my peers, none of them really talked to me, or even anyone else for that matter.
All of them, being military trained, kept their back straight and their faces stoic while waiting for the food to arrive, even then, I think that was just Eruptia showing an example.

It didn't really hurt anyone nor was it rude for us Pledge Bearers to start a conversation with someone during dinner, they just don't, I will though- and I wanted to start by talking to Bismuth, I don't know how well he's doing since we argued earlier but I hope that his mindset is good enough to talk to me.

"Hello," I greeted with a nod and Bis nodded back, I took a seat and… we didn't talk to each other, not one of us continued the conversation. Welp, guess our argument earlier is still in his mind, sucks to be him, I already moved on from it-

"Neophyte," The King, Igneous Sear Everlast, also known as my father called my name.

Realizing my mistake, I stood up and bowed to the king before apologizing, "I'm- I am sorry for being late, father," I waited for his approval.

"You may take a seat, daughter," so I did.

And fortunately for me, the awkward atmosphere from that exchange just now didn't last, one of the guests- a balding, middle-aged man with a pot belly and trimmed glasses, I think he's the brother of one of their patriarch's concubine, - started talking, "so this is the rumored Redeemer?" He asked with clear curiosity in his voice.

I stared at him and met his eyes, his soft gaze with my glare, was he hinting at something? People like him usually would when they use that title, "I never thought that you'd be able to get a Pledge in all honesty, the Great Goddess sees some Light in you then, that's a lot of expectation to bear, I am sorry,"

Fucker sounded like a robot.

I wanted to snap at him, to tell him that he sounded like a priest and ask if he likes to play and fiddle with- I smiled, "don't be, the Goddess sought to redeem me so I am trying my best to not only reach her expectations, but also go beyond it,"

"Everyone knows you already have, sweetie," I would've thought of that as sarcasm if it wasn't for the speaker; my eldest sister, Amber Lenora Everlast, the kindest of all of us, said with a genuine smile you can't find anyone sitting at the table adopting.
She turned to face me, "all the citizens of Everlast see the efforts that you are putting into working towards a better world, from saving our citizens to helping them grow crops with your proficiency and skill in using Light to donating to the poor, everyone sees your efforts."

"... I really just want to help," I said after a pregnant pause, "thank you for seeing my efforts, Amber,"

"You are welcome, and as I said, what you are doing isn't in vain, sister." she replied.

I hope so.

Someone to my front cleared their throat and I turned to see one of the guests, this time a fellow Pledge Bearer as well as one of the game's canon characters, Inferno, looking at me, I locked eyes with him and he smiled in a way that made him look even better, "it is nice to finally sit down and talk with you, Neophyte,"

I politely nodded, "I feel the same way, Inferno." I smiled, "it's a pleasure,"

"The pleasure is all mine, my lady,"

In the corner of my eye, I caught Zath staring at me and I gave her a small wave, she waved back before continuing her duties and I focused on Inferno again- really, calling the guy 'good-looking' would be an understatement because by all means, the guy in front of me can be an actor and a model with his looks alone, hell, his face will probably carry him to stardom even when he doesn't know how to act.

Then there's the three-piece suit that made him look even better from the way it wrapped tightly around his muscular body; a red tux with golden edges on the collar and a pair of black and white undershirts, emblazoned on the right side of the tux is their family crest- a volcano spewing lava.

"You're staring awfully long at him, Neo," I heard Amber say and I held back a scoff, yeah right the guy's just a kid in my eyes, and I'd rather not compete for his love with the rest of his fangirls, or the other noble girls for that matter, they can keep him.

"I think I find him fascinating," But since this is all politics, I needed to play along and "admitted" to her observations, "especially since I've heard stories of his exploits, would you care for a battle? Dear Inferno?"

A small smile tugged on his lips, "is it the usual bet? My dear Neo?"

To my left, I heard the sound of stomping and a yelp of pain- hm. Guess my sisters were stomping each other's foot again.

I ignored the sound- as did everyone else really, - and continued playing along, theatrics, that was oddly important in noble society, "I suppose so," I narrowed my eyes, that has been a thing ever since I decided to fight back against my first suitor hasn't it? People fighting me for my hand in marriage.

My would be opponent fixed his bright orange hair and locked his red eyes with my grays, "Then I would want to fight you later on the ball so that everyone may know that I have finally taken your hand and conquered your heart,"

"You won't," I replied bluntly.

"Then, that is a bet, my gem," Ah god, why is it so cheesy?! It took every ounce of my will to not furrow my eyebrows at what he just said-

"Ah?" I turned to my father, he was looking at me and… was most likely talking just now, wasn't he?

"Let me repeat myself, Neophyte," Igneous stared me down, "you should find a man suitable for marriage and engagement," I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.

What man? I'm technically thirty years old! I'm not some pedo old man! You think I like these children?!

"I have played along with your little games up until now but it is best that you get married and sire a powerful child to continue the fight against the Demons, you have such a big responsibility, you cannot neglect it in favor of your little games."

I huffed a lungful of air and my "father" narrowed his eyes, "no." I said bluntly, "if you wish for me to continue the fight, then I will do so, personally." I growled out.

"Neophyte-" now it was "mom's" turn but I cut her off.

"No." I repeated simply, "I will either go to Pledge Academy and train there-" and hopefully find the second Player character, assuming that they exist, "- or I don't marry at all, you wish for me to fight the Demons? Then I will do it! Not some non-existent child!"

Igneous sighed, "where did I go wrong? Falya?" He asked his wife who merely shrugged, "very well," he said, "but I expect you to be at the top of the Academy or else I'm gonna cut everything off and force you to marry."

Holding back a sigh, I violently pushed myself off the table and smirked when everyone winced at the sound of my chair scraping against the floor, I called my Pledge and after a moment of hesitation, arched my blade towards my neck-

"What is wrong with you, sister?" Bismuth said with shaking hands, the hilt of his Pledge was between his fingers while his blade was directly above my neck, drawing blood, courtesy of his sword being double edged.

"I would rather die." I ignored Bismuth and continued with my act. I still silently thanked him though.

Laughter broke the ensuing silence and we all turned to Inferno, "you would perfectly fit the role of the wife of Eruptia's future patriarch, Neophyte,"

"Bold words," I said, keeping up my anger, though a bit of it was genuine, what an arrogant little shit, "you're still young and a lot of your peers and competition are as talented as you, you aren't the future head of your house."

"Yet." Inferno argued with a confident smirk, "but genuinely I would love to duel you later at the Ball."

Right. The Ball. I need to wear a dress again don't I?

I sighed and recalled my Pledge and took my seat again at the table, grabbing a napkin, I wiped the blood off my neck and closed my eyes, I was a bit aggressive just now, I can admit that much, and antagonizing a large, influential house probably isn't a good idea either, "Inferno, truth be told, I do not think you are a bad man, I have worked with you in quenching wildfires on the forests below Everlast after all," I opened my eyes again and saw the boy staring at me with an unreadable expression, "but I'm just not interested, sorry."

"Don't be," he said, "I just hope that I'd get your attention through our fight, and… acknowledge the bet," He sounded formal at least.

Chapter 3
"Do you believe me when I say that I genuinely hate this?" I commented with a frown and Zath, who had a strip of gold fabric stuck between her lips and was busy with trying to get my dress to stick to my body, just looked at me before shrugging in reply. I stared at her reflection on the mirror, "You know you can just put that bow on the top of the cabinet? It's literally meant for that,"

I gestured with my eyes to the flat surface of said cabinet; filled with tiny racks for bows and ties of varying colors, and for the time being, most of them are unfurled and are nothing more than strips of fabric, just with the fancy title of 'bow' and 'tie' and with 'unfurled' at the start- okay, I'm being sarcastic, but it's for a good reason! This entire preparation is irritating and I won't get used to this no matter how many times I repeat it.

"Come on Zath, at least reply?" I said with a pout and my maid grunted, "that's not a reply," another grunt and this time, her hands found my hips and twisted them lightly, which she had a hard time doing because of my strength, I rolled my eyes and moved my hips in the direction she was moving it to.

"This is annoying, you're annoying," I eventually said.

I felt something tie itself around my waist and looked down to see a gold-colored fabric now circling the lower part of my stomach- just above the hips - and emphasizing my curves, which is… yeah… I already have problems with guys as is?

I didn't dare voice it out or wear pants in the gathering again because I just knew that dear old dad would get mad at me but the thought of rebellion is definitely tempting.

"Okay, tell me why you chose the color gold, your mouth is now free right?" I asked and turned to my maid, who had a smirk on her face, "what?"

"Nothing, mistress," she said as she tightened the fabric, making me jump, before tying it into a bow, "there! You look as good as ever, Neo, any man or woman would be proud of being your partner for the night,"

"I'm not interested," I rolled my eyes, "but sure, it's the thought that counts anyways- and goddess knows that nothing, not even my strength, stops those bastards from having thoughts of trying to court me,"

"That's a good thing, is it not?" Zath commented as she walked away and grabbed another mirror, which she placed behind me, "how does it look?"

I stared at the reflection of the mirror on the mirror- mirrorception! - in front of me, there, at my back, a golden, one foot long bow could be seen, it covered most of my lower back and had two tails going downward.

"Amazing," I complimented, "but I know you don't do things half assed so I think words don't really mean anything anymore right?"

Zath's reflection nodded, "I can always use a reward,"

Okay, fine, I did imply that, didn't I? "What do you want?"

"... a new dress would be nice," a dress? First make-up all those months ago, then her own skin and feminine supplies, and now a dress? I looked back and stared at Zath incredulously, "are you… planning on attracting someone, Zath?" I giggled when she gave me a dry stare, might as well push it, I smirked, "flaunting our feathers like some sort of cockatrice, now, are we?"

Zath's face turned serious before going solemn, "I wish I could marry them," she grabbed the mirror on my back and turned away from me before walking back to where she got it, "I don't think their parents would approve though, despite being a high born myself." I scoffed, what family out there wouldn't want her? They'd miss out!

"Come on Zath, you have my support! No family would go against my word, as… little as it is valued-" I winced, "- but! I assure you that you don't really need it since any family out there would die to have you in their ranks, you're great! Seriously, no one can top your house-wifing skills," she giggled, "no really!"

"Yes, yes, my house-wifing skills," another giggle, "but, I don't think I can bear the thought of being with them-" she started to say, "I'm… too weak, while they're strong, a Pledge Bearer, and an amazing person to boot, the people of Everlast love them even when the citizens don't really show it due to it being taboo and well, they're also very helpful, both to the Kingdom itself as well as the people living within it."

I faced her with a frown, is she talking about…

"Compare that to me, a simple, albeit high-ranking maid and you can immediately tell the difference, it's like the sky and the earth, or a bird and a worm, one soars while the other is stuck crawling on the ground," Zath faced me with a serious expression, "but I don't think I care about any of that, mistress-"

"I'm pretty sure Inferno is in your league Zath." I said nonchalantly and my maid stuttered before she blinked, then she gave me a dry stare.

"Inferno?" She asked and I nodded.

"Yeah! He's great but you're better," I shrugged, "and the whole people don't like him thing is because Eruptia is a military house, so praises of words aren't what they appreciate, they like action, not words. So everyone else just stays silent but don't worry, you have plenty of action already,"

"I… guess." Zath looked disappointed and I couldn't blame her, marrying Inferno does sound like a pipe dream but she doesn't need to worry since I'm planning on supporting her until she achieves her goal.

"You'd be a great couple!" I gave her a thumbs up.

"Yayyyyy~" she replied with a weak, discouraged tone but it's a good start!

I turned away from Zath to give her some time to think and stared at my own dress, ornate and immaculate, fitting for a princess, I suppose.
Design wise, the chest was pure white with sides of royal purple that went to my side and took over my ribs, it went around to my back and down to my midsection before stopping on the golden ribbon above my waist, and then the royal purple continued to eventually take over the dress below.

I twirled and watched in fascination as the light of my dressing room got reflected off of my gown, refracting from the hundreds of tiny silver ornaments within the hollow dress and creating a cascading light-show that got clearer and more unified the more it went down until eventually, everything below my my knees is nothing but the shine of pure, white light.

I stopped moving and the light show disappeared, "it's really a piece of work," I said in amazement, "Castella does good work, doesn't she?"

"She does, yes," Zath nodded, "do you wish for me to give your brother's fiancee the compliment?"

"Yes." I said with a squeal, "and tell her that I want to have tea with her at the back of the castle, tell her to bring her friends, too."

"Of course, mistress." Zath smiled, "now, time for your accessories, it is vital that we get those done as quickly as possible since we already spent so much time on your dress."

"It was worth it though, right?" I asked and Zath nodded in agreement before walking off to the cabinet and pulling one of the many drawers to reveal an assortment of necklaces, earrings, and bracelets made from holy silver- most of them tipped, interlaid or embedded with Neophyte Jades of varying sizes.

"Which one do you want, Neo?" Zath asked and I gave it some thought before giving her my answer.

"Those tear-shaped ones look nice,"

The skies of Everlast didn't have clouds, and that's mostly because the city is floating above them but- from this height, I was able to spot a few white tufts on the horizon. I never really wondered how the hell the City of Everlast managed to float like this but I guess that's par for the course when magic is involved.

Everlast, the floating city, and, contrary to its namesake, is also titled The City of Change.

That title wasn't all bluff either because my ancestors were genuine innovators who changed how everyone uses Light-based technology forever, and through their genius and innovation, they made the Kingdom into what it is today- a floating bastion that acts as the last defensive line of humanity against the horde of Demons that come every 50 years.

No matter how many times I do it, staring outside the window is never boring for me, after all, the magitech within the city is the most advanced of its kind all across the world and you can never find a piece of technology outside of Everlast that can top the stuff that could be found here- from the simple street canals with self cleaning properties that use artificial slimes to the advanced flying carriages that utilizes a Griffon's natural Light to fly and keep itself uplift- everything here is the best of the best.

The City of Change indeed.

And I'm fortunate enough to be a princess of this city, someone who can have access to anything but the most restricted technology here, a privilege given to those with money, and authority- and that privilege is why I'm riding one of the most advanced flying carriages in the city, full of luxuries, comfort, and everything in between- this thing is a Private Jet in every definition of the word.

But even with all the luxuries that's inside of the carriage- all the soft pillows, nice seats, open space, tables full of food, and the like - it still didn't feel like it was worth it to be inside of this damn thing. Mostly because-

"Ohoho~~ Yes, I heard that she even goes around the dark alleyways of the lower city and spreads her legs to anyone that passes!"

- the people I was riding with are… let's say, noisy- for the lack of an insulting term to call them.

I didn't know why they liked to gossip, well, I guess a small part of me does since I know that there isn't anything here that can possibly entertain them every day other than gossip (except for training, learning, debating, and everything else).

The thing that the girl said just now wasn't even directed at me either, no, they usually just call me a disgrace and then be done with it. Instead, the girl that they're mocking is one of House Whirlia's members, I think she's a girl that goes by Denir, which I don't know anything about other than her name.

"Hey, your disgraceful sister is staring at you," I looked away from Pearl's gaggle of girls and focused back on the window.

"Traitor." That was one of the many names that was used to call me back in the day, I was angry about it at first but I've learned to accept it over time, it's not like they're wrong, I did betray humanity as a whole by being selfish.

Still hurts to hear though.

"I bet she's getting fucked by the Demon Lord in her dreams,"

And that was a mistake for her to say-

Everyone at the carriage, including me, glared at the bitch for her audacity to say the name of humanity's enemy so casually. And to save face, Pearl slapped her hard enough to make her look the other way, "if you don't know what to say, just keep your mouth shut, Capscaria."

"Sorry."

Well at least my sister knows how to discipline her gaggle, I gotta give her that at least.

Awkward silence was the only thing that was inside the carriage after that, no one dared to talk, but they did shoot me and the girl glares that barely affected me, and only because that they're glares were related to my biggest mistake.
Occasionally, some of us would eat the pastries on the tables and the only thing that saved our ears from hearing all the crunching noises in this uncomfortable silence is the etiquette training that all of us had during our early childhood.

In the end, the carriage couldn't have arrived to the Phoenix Butterfly Garden sooner.

The moment that it did, us young, socialite noble girls filed out like there was no tomorrow, we practically rushed out- fancily, and in line, of course, because how else would young ladies do it? - of the carriage before heading to the Garden post haste.

I was the one who got out last, just behind Capscaria herself, who looked like she was about to cry and who I knew would drink herself to death tonight. There's also a high chance that she's gonna cheat with her fiancee and wake up with another guy tomorrow morning but honestly? I didn't really care since it was her fault that every other girl turned her into an outcast to begin with.

So with that in mind, I walked forward and… stared at Capscaria's sullen form.

I bit my tongue- don't do it- don't do it- oh fuck it-

I sighed, "look," I met her eyes but she quickly averted them, "I know how hard it can be to get treated like this but it's not the end of the world when it happens," I soothed, "we're about to socialize aren't we? Try to find a new circle, or just enjoy yourself, talk to a bunch of businessmen and ask if you can buy a share, do whatever."

I turned away from her, "just… don't ruin yourself and your future alright? Because that'll only make the rumors and your outcast status worse."

I've seen what happens to girls as weak as her being treated like this, and… well, let's just say that the flying carriage we just got out of would give her a good height to jump from to make it painless.

"... thanks, Neophyte. And- you're right." Just this once, I will turn around and smile at her. Even when she's a bitch.

"I was only doing the right thing, enjoy the night, Capscaria," I can't just stand by and let some girl ruin her life when I could've prevented it. And if she doesn't take my word to heart and drinks till she blacked out either way then that's not really my fault, is it?

I moved away from the airstrip and into the building proper.

As always, whenever things like this happen and the Phoenix Butterfly Garden gets rented out, the organizers would work day and night to turn their massive ballroom and everything else into something that the visiting royals and nobles would be proud to go to and as always, they didn't disappoint- Everything looked amazing and immaculately detailed, and not even the banners hanging on the walls were spared.

I stared at the banners as I walked through the hall that led to the ballroom, they were all based off of the visiting houses and each one was specially colored and had their own little family crest marking them: Whirlia's banner was blue, dark like the deep ocean and had a beautifully drawn lake at the center, Tornaria's' were white, pale like the wind, and had an all encompassing tornado at the center.

The rest were of similar designs, Nimbusegia's was a dark grey and had a black storm cloud wreathed and outlined by lightning at the center, and Eruptia's were bright red with a volcano dripping with lava for a crest.

Then there's also all the smaller families that either have the same specializations as the big ones or just have large swathes of land but didn't have anything related to Pledge Bearers- most of them weren't really important but one did catch my eye, and it was the banner of the Venomites, a family that has a rather… unique usage of Light, one that specializes in poison.

I got to the ballroom eventually and it was exactly what I expected it to be; a room full of the rich, food that caters to them, and their children eating and talking. All in that order.

And looking around, I still couldn't move on from the fact that the in-game art didn't do this place justice- I mean, really, who asked the people building this place to make beautiful art using the four pillars that supported the dome-shaped roof of the ballroom?

Even the chandelier up above looked gorgeous, and that's not to mention the circular fighter's-ring at the center of the room, one that will soon be occupied by duelists to give us rich people a show.

That or- "Hello there, Disgrace." - a fucking cliche happens to me and I'm forced to slap the bastard with my elbow-length white gloves and ask him for a challenge to save face, "you should be thankful that I'm even willing to marry someone like you-"

As if rehearsed, I took off my gloves and slapped the bastard in the cheek, another social gathering, another attempt to (rudely) court me, another fight.

"I take offense to that," I said with a smug, derisive tone. It was genuine this time, too. No need for theatrics.

Chapter 4
"That's a true woman right there," Ignis Crust E. Eruptia shook his wineglass back and forth, sloshing the wine within and mixing it with the juices of the lemon stuck to the mouth of his glass.

Silently, he observed his niece from the high vantage point afforded by his seat on the balcony built inside the ballroom, she was the ideal Everlast, and should she not have fallen to her childish whims and asked the now deceased Hero to do a fetch quest- then there is no doubt that she would be the Crown Princess of her generation.

"She's perfect, don't you agree, Inferno?" He asked his son who simply nodded once. Inferno kept his eyes on the arena, on his prize, the way she fights, and the way she decimates her opponents and uses her versatile fighting techniques to her advantage. There's a scary mind behind that powerful strength and Ignis couldn't be prouder of having the same blood as her.

His son was obviously attracted to her, what man wouldn't? Her gorgeous face was magnetic and her long legs even more so now that she had shaken off her gown in favor of an elastic pair of shorts that stopped halfway through her milky thighs. Still, as magnetic as his soon-to-be bride may be, Crust could simply not act upon Inferno's willful ignorance of his father's question, so to save face, he had to scold him, "you will win and marry her, you hear me?"

He stomped the boy's feet so that he would face him, "You hear me?"

"Yes, father," A nod, and Crust left him be, satisfied.

Crust waited for the round between his planted battler and his niece to start, he was shivering in his seat from anticipation and could not help but grow a grin as the girl took her position on the right side of the 12 by 12 arena, the referee who stood in the middle of the two combatants eyed her opponent with pity before raising his hand and calling the battle true.

Crust silently contemplated how long the battle would take, he knew that Neophyte was strong, but his seeded battler was an amazing defender, and with the two agreeing that they would simply fight without using Light, he knew that the boy would be able to block her attacks, as fast as they may be. Hopefully, his defensive fighting style would be able to exhaust her for the fight against Inferno, giving him an easy win.

And if it doesn't, then that's why there are backups, aren't there?

There were three of his little boys in total, and each one was paid a handsome amount in order to battle Neophyte and exhaust her, turning her into an easy picking for his son, who is also pretty strong but not as much as Neophyte, Inferno needed to fight an exhausted Neophyte, as Crust knew that the girl's fighting prowess and could simply not be underestimated.

Crust anticipated a battle with plenty of parries and a slew of blocks, one that is entertaining, long, and more importantly, tiring.

What he did not expect is for his niece to break the distance between her and her opponent in 4 long steps and kick the boy between the legs way before he could call upon his Pledge.

Every man within the ballroom winced as his planted seed curled into himself and started crying, he wailed the words, "my stomach hurts! My Stomach hurts!" Over and over again like a pathetic worm but just this once, Crust could understand because even he held back a shudder from the squishing sound that echoed amidst the silence.

He faced his son once more, "do not get caught off guard like that, you hear me, boy?"

Inferno faced him, "yes father,"

"I want you to win and earn the right to marry her without losing the ability to bear a child," he said, "and I want her within our ranks by tonight's end and pregnant by the end of the week, yours and her child would be a powerful combatant and I hear she's also a great teacher with a well of knowledge far above those her peers," the words- like you went unsaid, "which means that you can focus on your duties for Eruptia while she stays at home, care for, and teaches your child,"

Inferno looked down and Crust felt himself get irritated, that irritation turned to anger when he heard the boy's next words, "she would not like what you are saying about marriage should she hear it, father."

He forcefully grabbed Inferno by the neck and dragged him until his breath brushed his son's nose, "I don't care about her opinion," He growled out, "I want her to be a part of our ranks regardless of her feelings, do I make myself clear?"

"Y-yes father," Crust let go, satisfied that his son didn't slur his words despite being held by the jaw. Inferno went back to his seat and Crust took a sip of his wine, he smiled, this is why The Garden is a good choice, the damn butterfly den and the insects' connection to the Eruptia family be damned.

The fight below soon unwrapped and Neophyte is free once more, she walked down from the ring and headed to a maid that held her dress, presumably so that she could wear it again, there wasn't a need for a shower because she hadn't even broken a sweat, but she will soon because Crust wouldn't let her take a break, he called for his other plant to go up to her and insult her in the worse possible manner to call for a fight.

Like clockwork, the events from the entrance repeated themselves nigh perfectly; a boy with brown skin walked up to her, said some words, and Neophyte looked offended before grabbing her gloves and slapping him with it.

Another fight, another chance to tire her out.

"Make sure that you're prepared for cheap tactics this time around," He called and saw a nod of acknowledgment from his plant disguised as a sportsmanlike gesture towards his opponent, "I want you to tire her out,"

He didn't nod this time around but Crust knew that his words passed through and so, without fanfare, the fight started once more and this time, his plant called upon his Pledge two steps into Neophyte's dash, causing the girl to take a step back gracefully and call upon her own weapon, a beautiful rapier that glistened white under the spotlight, much like the ornaments that she wore on her ear; a pair of tear-shaped earrings that hung from a small chain attached to her lobe, her namesake was at the bottom of the drop, a pure white orb that didn't glisten among the reflective Holy Silver.

The fight started in earnest when Neophyte charged and went for a quick and precise slash toward the boy's face, which his plant blocked using the blunt side of his own Pledge; a scimitar that glowed a toxic yellow.

Neophyte became relentless after that, pulling out her much lighter rapier before proceeding with a whirlwind of attacks that never faltered, her steps were as graceful as her slices, using her soles as a starting point that eventually caused the rest of her body to move, it was like she was dancing- no wasted movement and each one connected.

She was good at improvisation as well, seen when after Crust gave his plant a tip- "Saqwil, let the blade hit you and break her streak with a heavy hit directed at her body and force her to block," - that his plant followed, letting the rapier's edge strike the left side of his chest and draw blood.

It looked painful but Saqwil could take it, that much Crust knew. The boy is enduring to a fault, as seen when he practically walked through the flames of Blaze, another one of his sons. Blaze won in the end but he was bedridden due to exhausting his Light while Saqwil was running around the city of Everlast the next day as though nothing happened.

Crust held back a curse when he saw that Neophyte dodged Saqwil's slash instead of blocking it, well, the girl probably knew that the scimitar is heavier than a rapier, which makes blocking pointless but even then, he expected her to block, like always, she's hard headed like that. An Everlast.

After the dodge, she pushed forward and her stream of attacks continued, over and over again she kept slashing relentlessly and Saqwil could only weather the storm of blades while holding his scimitar up in front of him in a wide guard, he kept moving the vertical blade to where he thought his opponent would slash next and as beads of sweat formed on his brow, Crust knew that Neophyte would start hitting through his blocks soon.

It didn't take long for the first slash to connect to Saqwil's skin, and more continued to hit after that until eventually- the boy's body was beet red, yet he kept standing, gritting his teeth and exhausting her, Neophyte didn't look tired but Crust hoped that she was at least feeling the strain.

Saqwil defended to the bitter end and when he finally fell, cheers erupted across the ballroom.

"That was amazing! I can't believe the Redeemer can move that fast!"

"She really is amazing isn't she? I think she already amended for her sins but she said it herself, she's not gonna stop working hard until she defeats a Demon Noble all on her own,"

"Saqwil's fucking durable huh? See? I told you he can last!"

"Do you think the Redeemer is gonna accept to be wed at some point? You think I can predict it? I wanna see when's the perfect time I can ask her for marriage-"

Hm. A rival to Inferno. He would be disappointed by the end of the night.

"Boy, this is the last one, but she should be exhausted plenty already, so I hope that you make the literal sweat and blood of my plants count," He didn't look at Inferno and simply nodded at his final plant, the son of someone under his wing, a vassal, and one that is loyal to him.

The boy- Clast, - is powerful too, one that is a physical monster. It is rather unfortunate that he didn't have a Pledge because Crust would've adopted him, trained him, and turned him into a formidable warrior who can fight toe to toe with the best of them.

Clast, for one reason or the other, didn't provoke Neophyte and instead politely asked her for a battle before she even left the ring and the girl, not looking winded whatsoever, shrugged and agreed readily, and soon, cheering started as her new opponent entered the ring.
Clast was already wearing his typical martial arts attire and had his favored chains wrapped around his arms, he nodded at the referee who looked uncertain to start their fight but he eventually did, from the encouraging words of Neophyte of all people.

Crust could barely make out her words due to the distance but he nevertheless managed to read her lips, and what she said certainly surprised Crust, 'he can fight me even without using Light,'

Did Neophyte know about Clast's insane physical aptitude? The boy certainly had the physique of a powerful Pledge Bearer but… to be known by the Redeemer herself? The workaholic who only cared about her own training? That's new. He should ask his brother about that later.

As he mulled over the possibility of Neophyte searching for other men, the fight between her and Clast soon started, with the boy going on the offensive by unshackling the chain on his right arm and using it as a make-shift mace that moved across the entire ring, sweeping it with a sideward swing that Neophyte simply ducked over.

Then the actual battle started and everything turned way too quickly for Crust to fully comprehend from this distance- what little he did know is that the two combatants constantly shifted positions, like when Neophyte stepped to the right and Clast countered with a quick weave to the left, circling the girl before pulling on his chain and using it as a knuckle that'll amplify the damage from his punch.

Which Neophyte blocked with the bladed edge of her rapier, and the weapon cut halfway through Clast's chain.

In response, the boy didn't panic and quickly pulled the chain towards himself and started to spin it around, pushing Neophyte back. Slowly, the chain spun at the top of the arena and when he was about to bring it down towards Neophyte- the girl slashed upwards and with a surprising use of accuracy, pushed the tip of her blade in the middle of one of the chains before reangling the attack to the side.

The chain struck the ring and a loud thwack! Echoed across the silent ballroom before the girl dashed forward and like a raptor, started an assault of slashes, all aimed at Clast's vital spots. So she knew that he could defend, then, because she wouldn't have risked killing her opponent if not.

Crust hummed in consideration as the girl attacked over and over again and without hesitation, using her momentum to put weight behind her slashes and strike with heavy blows despite the lightness of her weapon.

Her assault continued until Clast was forced to surrender, raising a hand wrapped with damaged chains to indicate that he didn't want to fight anymore. Neophyte stopped and immediately, her exhaustion was evident, she was panting, and Crust grinned, he patted his son's back, "go, challenge her."

"Of course, father." He stood up and gave him a respectful bow before leaving to fulfill the task.

His son went down the balcony, talked to Neophyte, who narrowed her eyes at him, then nodded in acceptance of the challenge. Crust smirked as they both went into position and whispers of her defeat and marriage rang across the crowd, a lot of the Redeemer's secret admirers glared at his son but that didn't matter, Inferno is about to win the princess' hand and his family would become all the more better because of it.

The referee's hand raised itself.

And so did Neophytes.

Crust furrowed his eyebrows as the girl was given an amplifier for her voice, she held it on top of her mouth and declared something that exceeded Crust's expectations, "I want the fight to allow the use of Light," Crust met his son's eyes and shook his head, deny it! He silently voiced, there is a reason for why she's considered the strongest Pledge Bearer of your generation!

Neophyte's next words left Inferno no other choice but to accept, "Unless… family Eruptia is scared that my unique applications of Techniques will win over their traditional ones?"

So she's making it political, then? Crust gritted his teeth and nodded at his son. Inferno has no choice now but to fight a battle that he cannot win. Damn Neophyte and her wits.

The referee looked excited as he raised his hand, and when it went up, a barrier came over the ring, protecting everyone from the devastating battle that was about to occur.

When the hand went down, Neophyte's hair started to fly violently as the power of her Light flared to life, then, her body glowed red for a brief second and her rapier soon followed- and that was it, she crossed the distance between her and Inferno before anyone could blink, and Crust's son, who was still preparing an AOE Technique that would've turned the Ring and everything within the barrier to ash, with the exemption of himself, sighed in defeat as his blood ran down his neck, his supposed lover glaring at him defiantly.

He surrendered and the rapier went away from his neck.

Neophyte grabbed the amplifier once more, "you think you can win me over with your cheap tricks?" She spat, "If you do shit like that, Inferno- I'm never marrying you."

Crust bit his cheek, just casually announce Inferno's cheating, will she?

Inferno looked like he wanted to say something but Crust's glare stopped that from happening.

Neophyte walked out of the ring and out of the ballroom with the maid who carried her gown tailing behind her.

Chapter 5
I grabbed the scalp of my hair and squeezed, pushing the water out and going downward until my hand reached the end of my silver strands.

The quick shower has helped me sort out my thoughts- well, singular, it's only one thought and it comes from Inferno's pathetic attempt at taking my hand in marriage. I mean really? Sending people to insult me in the worst way possible and making me fight them to tire me out? All that fucking chivalry at the dinner table and it ends up like that.

What a piece of shit.

And how does that help him marry me? If there was even a chance to begin with, that is.

I twisted the knob of the shower and turned it off.

Everything- the hot water, the steam, and my running thoughts died down. Slowly, I stepped out of the bathroom and closed the glass door behind me, the tiles beneath my feet were ticklish from the way they shifted from being warm to cold.

I held out my hand and grabbed a towel to wipe myself with, starting with my hair- god it felt way too long now, I should probably ask for a tie, - then my face, down my neck, and the rest of my body. When I was done, I wrapped the towel on my head and walked into the locker room naked.

I was greeted by 4 maids who passively walked over to me before they dragged me into a nearby mirror to start changing my clothes.
Underwear first- a pair of bra and panties, all white, - then my corset, then finally, my white and purple dress, including the golden bow tie, and seeing as I literally took it off seconds after I entered the ballroom, the thing didn't have a single speck of dust on it.

With the maids' numbers, it didn't take that long for them to change me and even add a bit of powder to my face, and just as they were about to finish, I faced one of them and asked for a hair tie, she obliged and walked off briefly before coming back and handing me a thin, circular band that I used to tie my hair into a ponytail.

I stood up and gave the maids my thanks, then because I'm a noble and it's practically an obligation to give tips, I made my way over to a small stack of empty cheques hanging by the wall- evidence of this obligation stuff by the way, - grabbed one, wrote a number, and signed it. I put a bit of my Light into it for good measure before handing it to their leader?.. Or was she just the one who walked forward first?

Whatever, she took it with a bow all the same, I gave nodded gratefully, "Thank you for helping me change, the dress would've been a pain otherwise,"

"Again, off with the pleasantries, mistress, we were only doing our job," the middle aged woman said and I nodded weakly, usually I would smile at their reaction but my mood was too sour for that. "Do you need anything else? Our services extend to the venue,"

"Uhm… I guess I want someone to deliver a small table of meat to me, protein, all of it, is that okay?" They nodded, "And add a few fruit and vegetable shakes to it as well, thank you,"

The maid bowed and said, "it is our job, mistress, no need for pleasantries."

"Yeah, yeah," I waved them off with a smile before walking to the doors of the locker room.

Now, I was only a hallway away from going back to the ballroom, the same one that had Inferno in it- here comes the politics, just… face the music Neo, there's nothing you can do about it other than be passive aggressive towards that piece of shit. It's all politics, like always, you're part of the noble society so-

To my pleasant surprise, I found a distraction: A girl was standing outside the bathroom door, face sullen as she looked down on the ground and rolled the wine glass she held in her hand, she had autumn brown hair, a slender neck, and a small, non-puffy green dress that showed her petite figure- I took another look at her and immediately recognized her face.

"Capscaria?"

The girl looked up, "Neophyte," she greeted with a shaky smile, "I… can I talk to you for a while? I don't think I can trust myself,"

I reluctantly nodded, wondering if this was some sort of ploy- Nobles can never have enough of those for some reason, - but decided to give her a chance to be genuine because if she was, then she needs my help to keep her image and more importantly, her body safe.

And I want to help, no two ways about it, I already fucked up hard enough.

I gestured to our left, where the exit of the hallway is and where groups of nobles and other rich people can be seen socializing through the small circular windows on the upper part of the double doors.

"Come on." I jerked my head and started walking, Capscaria tailed behind me, a few feet off so I slowed down and waited until she was walking right next to me before talking, "is anything wrong?" Well of course something is wrong, that was probably a bad question to ask, "sorry, force of habit- what's bothering you?"

She gulped down her wine. All of it. In a single go. "so… I've been turned into an outcast," I blinked and bit back a retort- oh bohoo, "and Pearl and her friends thought that it was a good idea to spread the word that I… you know,"

Said the name of the Demon Lord when he's out there genociding entire Kingdoms? Yeah, not the best of ideas now, is it? It's like saying Hitler was fucking a jewish girl you hate when World War 2 is still happening- sure it's a great insult but it's a bit insensitive. It also makes you look like an asshole.

I held back my tongue, "you're gonna be fine!" I assured with a smile, "it's fine," I said again for better effect, "you're gonna be fine," third time's the charm!

"Will I?" She asked, a bit uncertain. I nodded.

"Of course! You just need to… you know, apologize later, the bigger the spectacle, the more it will stick to the minds of the people, I say you go up the stage, grab the amplifier, and then say you are sorry and bow! I'll be there with you," I winked at her.

"I-is that a good idea? That'll turn me into a laughing stock!" She looked horrified and I could get her but-

"A laughing stock is better than an outcast," I said, "trust me,"

"... if you say so,"

I tapped her shoulders, "of course!" I gave her a beaming smile, which oddly made her blush, huh, didn't she have a fiancee? Whatever- "Now come on! Let's go start socializing!"

She nodded, "Mhmm! Let's,"

Even with my… words of encouragement, me and Capscaria didn't really talk to anyone, and actually, we found ourselves sitting somewhere in the back of the ballroom, far away from the groups of nobles yet still visible to the servants tending to the food, I was waiting for my meat and shake to arrive with my cheek pressed against my palm, humming, I turned to my temporary companion, who still looked conflicted, so you know what? Fine. "Are you sure you're okay with this?"

Capscaria stopped staring at the socializing nobles and faced me, she tilted her head, a faint blush on her cheeks, "whatever could you mean?"

"I mean-" I gestured to the table, "this."

The girl who I thought was a hard socialite averted her gaze and meekly looked at her feet before saying something that I could barely catch, "I'm fine with it,"

I turned away from her, okay, so she's fine with staying low and away from the hundreds of nobles on the distance, I don't get why she's staring at them so hard but honestly I'm fine with it as well, having spent most of my past life just sitting in front of a computer, obsessed with video games and other fictional shit to the point that I didn't even eat that much, and that sort of repeated in this life since I did nothing but train to repent for my grievous mistake.

And I mean, it's not like I hate talking to people, I just… don't feel like it, I guess.

See right now where I'm talking to someone, or trying to. I need to find a topic first though-

I started tapping the table, "I wonder, what do you like to do in your free time? Capscaria?"

That's good right? All noble girls like to ask about what they do in their free time.

"I-" she furrowed her brows, "like to weave? My mother knows how to make banners so she teaches me, she also has a hobby of making dye so I kind of followed along," she answered.

I saw her in a new light after that and I tried not to look at her fingers but I couldn't resist it- well… they looked dainty and without any damage so that either means that the dye she's making isn't that acidic, or she has servants to do them for her.

But as for weaving… yeah, most noble girls do that, so I wouldn't be surprised that she does too. That probably also means that she's pretty dextrous with her fingers, enough that she wouldn't get pricked by a needle even when it's her first time trying to weave. Hence why her fingers are spotless and without a single scar- no surprise there.

"What about you? Do you have anything interesting you do on the side?" Her wording was aggressive and felt like it would come from Pearl and her cronies but her tone was soft, which was enough for me to shrug my suspicions off and give an obvious answer-

"Yeah, I like to train, either with my Light or my Pledge." As for why I do? I keep training because I know that the Demons won't stop growing more powerful and numerous when I'm not, this isn't a game where the world waits for the player to finish their side quests and get stronger before defeating the main storyline to continue the plot, here, time will go on no matter what.

Capscaria's giggle broke me out of my thoughts, "I knew you'd say that," she tilted her head affectionately and stared at me, "I… know because I…" she looked away, "saw and liked your performance back at the ring, defeating all those guys back to back while looking no worse for wear, and when you did look tired, the…" her face turned pink and her gaze turned to my stomach, "... uhm. Sweat only made you look better."

She looked away, "it uh- shows how hard you've been working on yourself. Or something." She sipped her wine.

I grinned, well I did work hard didn't I? A bit of ego stroking isn't so bad. "Awww, thanks!"

"Y-you're welcome, Neophyte." Came the reply.

"Just call me Neo, alright?" I corrected her.

"Okay, Ne-Neo." She stuttered and looked away while I focused back on waiting for my meal.

Yeah… I do notice but I'm not planning on taking her from her fiancee, even when I'm a Pledge Bearing princess and will probably get win over him no matter what he does, most of that is because I'm not that interested in girls but also it's because things are kind of complicated.

It's not well known but the word "Pledge Bearer" is actually just code for 'politics will always follow you no matter what, dumb bitch.'

I got out of my head and beamed when a waiter pushing a cart full of meat came our way and Capscaria, noticing my happiness, followed my gaze and frowned, "Neo…" I turned to her with a smile, "are you gonna eat… all of that?" I nodded and she looked insulted, "what? What about your figure?!"

"Don't worry about that," I said, waving her off, "I'm gonna burn it all down by tomorrow and besides, I went over the top on myself tonight so this much food is only natural," I shrugged when she shot me a disbelieving look, "fighting with that much speed doesn't just burn my calories Caps-" she blinked, either because of my sudden use of a nickname or the fact that I can burn my calories easily, both of those can get that reaction, "- my brain also has to keep up with the speed and goddess knows that our brains burn so much energy already from their regular, day-to-day functions alone."

"..." Silence, "... you know, my younger sister tried to imitate your fighting style."

"Uhuh," I replied as I helped the Waiter prepare the dishes, it was everything I could dream of; plates of roasted steak, poultry, pork, and a small bucket of sauce, this is one of the few things that I appreciate in being a Pledge Bearer because this much food wouldn't even get me fat, it'll just refuel my body and prepare it for my exercise tomorrow morning.

"She said her head hurt after a while of doing it," I took a bite out of a lamb, the mutton was soft on my teeth and texturous on my tongue, "did you have the same problems?"

"Thell hwer thu bhreathe-" I answered briefly before cutting myself off when she looked at me dryly, I swallowed my food, "tell her to keep breathing as she moves, if she doesn't, it'll just make her head hurt and also get her to tire easily,"

"Really?" I nodded, she looked pensive, "I thought you'd hide it honestly," I finished the mutton and shrugged, "you know, since it's… training stuff?"

"What do I care?" I asked, "my trainers didn't bother hiding shit from me, even went as far as extended their teachings from their regular pay when they saw how good I was," I placed a plate full of pork chops in front of me and started eating, "any effort to fight the army of Demons descending down on us should be nurtured, it's our survival we're talking about, and there's no point feeling good about being unique when like, it'll only last for 10 or more years, not because everyone would do it, but because… you know."

"Why 10?" She asked.

"That's supposed to be the estimate of humanity's extinction." Her eyes widened and I nodded, "yeah…"

"That's…"

"Horrifying? Pretty much, but I'm pretty sure we can hold on for another 30 at best, there are a lot of prodigies in my current generation, and all of them are from different houses, too, which means less competition between them and a lot of resources given to them by their respective houses."

That was my go to coping mechanism whenever I think about the Hero's death because it is sort of true, all the game characters, from the members of House Eruptia to Whirlia, are here and would continue the fight even when the Hero is gone, so there's a chance that a new one would rise before humanity gets fully wiped out.

"That's…" she trailed off, "your right!"

"I am, yeah," I shrugged.

"And not to mention you as well, I bet you can fight a Demon Baron one on one," I raised an eyebrow, thought it through, and nodded.

"I can fight three at the same time," I replied and finished the rest of my chops, "if I use Light."

"That's pretty arrogant," she called out.

"Eh, it is the way it is," I shrugged. I've been training non-stop for what? 10-ish years now? I started weak after I got my Pledge but 2 years after the start of my training and results were starting to show, and after that? I just increased the intensity of my training.
By now, if I estimate my strength using in-game terms, I would be around level 28-ish and even stronger when I include my Light and my Techniques, definitely more than enough to fight 3 level 25 Demon Barons at the same time.

"You sound confident so you're probably right…" she pursed her lips, "can I ask you another question?" I nodded, "how does one get a Pledge?"

"You don't," I answered simply, "Pledges aren't gotten they're received from the Goddess herself," that was the in-game lore and mechanic of the damn things, which is confusing because there are evil people who have Pledges but what do I know? The Great Goddess is nigh omnipotent and I'm just a girl.

But going by the lore on how to get them… "so if you want a Pledge, you gotta prove to the world that you're kind, and not just once either, but you need to keep it up for the rest of your life,"

"What… does that mean?" She asked.

"It means that for you to have a powerful Pledge, you need to have a savior's mindset," I replied, if I remember correctly, the opposite would weaken the Pledge until it becomes so weak and useless that the weapon just snaps and falls apart, "and you need to promise yourself- convince yourself that you will forever and ever use that Pledge for the good of mankind,"

"Is that so?" I nodded, "then… how did you get yours?"

I knew I'd get mine but that wasn't a proper answer- "I wanted to repent and kept telling myself that if I could fight the demons, I would do it non-stop, train till I bleed and could not walk, and then sacrifice myself if it means that I can save the rest of humanity,"

"That's harsh." She said.

"But it worked," I shrugged, "and I'm keeping my promise, I've worked till I couldn't walk and Zath was forced to carry me back to bed, and when I was bedridden, I also trained, this time mentally by increasing my reservoir of Light,"

She looked at me with sadness, like what I said means that I wasted my life and it's sort of true, but I didn't care because- "it was all worth it in the end,"

"How so?"

"I'm considered as the strongest Pledge Bearer of my generation, and that's putting into account all the prodigies of the different families," I started chewing hard, enough to break bone. Where I am now still didn't feel enough. Nothing did. "And when I go out there, you bet your ass that I'm gonna kill as many Demons as I could,"

Chapter 6
"For a lady, your table sure is full huh?" Unable to speak, I only nodded in reply before continuing to guzz down plateful after plateful of meat, which the girl sitting in front of me seems to take offense at- hey lady, it's not the meat's fault it's here on the plate okay? It's everyone else's, it just gets eaten, "and so much meat, what makes you think that eating that much all at once is such a good idea, I do not know" she added with a shake of her head.

Her expression twisted into something ugly, "and… can you eat more slowly? It's unlady-like for you to stuff food after food into your mouth without time in between, you should be more dainty,"

I reached out a hand to Capscaria and started waving it, nodding, she grabbed one of my shakes- strawberry, neat, - and I took it before draining it into my mouth and washing everything down my throat. I wiped my mouth and released a satisfied sigh, goddess I love eating without consequences, "if you have problems with it, then leave,"

"Neophyte-"

I cut Capscaria off, look, I get it, the girl is your sister's friend but sadly, she isn't mine. "And for the record, I need to eat this fast or else everything will just go cold and bland." I crossed my arms defensively, "and also, it's not like I'll get fat, I literally need to eat this much in order to keep up with my physical needs so…"

"Then it's all about you?" She snorted and daintily wiped her lips with a white napkin, there wasn't even anything there! What did she wipe? The bullshit that's stuck to her mouth? "How selfish,"

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, how the fuck do these guys always find a reason to attack me verbally? Is their brain working over time to find everyone's flaws? Of all things? If so then, what the fuck? I stared at her, speechless, well I guess I do have something to say-

"You do realize that I'm basically doing this so that I have energy to not only help the people of Everlast, but also to one day fight the Demons right?" Hold back the sarcastic retort and be reasonable, like the girl in front of me because I knew that she bit back a less polite retort just now, knew it.

… but at least nothing about fighting Demons came out of her mouth and instead what she said was, "and with how… barbaric you are in your actions, do you really believe that I think highly of your bold words? Helping citizens? By what? Making things worse? Destroying houses?" She snorted, "ohoho- but the Demons, oh the Demons- you'd do well fighting them, won't you, barbarian?"

"God you're a bitch," her eyes widened, see now she's gonna start spreading what I said around- this is why I hate cursing in front of girls like her- welp- might as well continue, no turning back now, "do you get off on this? I mean- I get it, you know? Everyone has their preferences and getting wet by talking down on others is probably arousing for you,"

"How crude!" She raised her voice, "what do you take me for-"

"OH-hOH- oH! hOW CwUdE!" I said sarcastically before grabbing another plate of meat, "fuck off, I'm trying to eat here,"

Standing up, the uh, what's her name again? - anyways, she said, "You will regret this," before stomping off to annoy some other unfortunate girl or guy attending the ball- I would say I pity them but I'd rather not, or else she'd feel me saying it and come back here to start pestering me again.

"That wasn't a good idea," a red faced Capscaria said right next to me, "d-do you really think that she would jsut let go of the g-gradges?"

"No?" I said, turning to her, I grabbed the wine bottle from her hand, "and you should stop drinking," she's been drinking wine for as long as I was eating and let me see… ah, right, I only have a quarter of meat left.

And what even is a Gradge? Why would the girl not let go of it?

I shook my head when Capscaria tried to grab the wine, "You're going to die of alcohol poisoning if you continue like this,"

"I won't!" She vehemently refuted, raising her voice and standing up before saying, she stomped her foot and I saw her body tremble, "l-look at me! I am fine-"

With a feat of speed, I grabbed her before she could fall, "there, there," I patted her back before bringing the two of us back in the table, I plopped her to her seat before fixing mine, which had unfortunately fallen when I suddenly stood up to save her just now, "Are you still fine? Caps? Maybe take a break?"

She giggled, "heh, Caps. Eehe-" I smiled, which turned into a frown when she turned to me and gave me a defiant stare, "Nho. Nu breaks-"

"Okay-" I grabbed the waiter walking to the two of us and shoved the wine into his hands, "take that somewhere else," he nodded, left, and I was free to face Capscaria again, "look, you're drunk so you should take a breather and just… I don't know, sit there or something?"

"Ai ham nhot dunk!" Sighing, I rubbed the top of her head to placate her, hoping that it'll calm her down somewhat. Is it odd that she leaned into my touch? Yes. Do I care? Eh… sort of.

Capscaria had a quivering smile on her face as she rubbed her head on my hand with closed eyes, "this feels good,"

"It does, doesn't it?" After pushing a few empty plates away from her side of the table, I proceeded to push her head down onto the now free space, "now, how about you lie there and I'll continue rubbing your head like this okay?"

"Y-yesh."

"Good girl."

She giggled, "th-that's me! Your good little girl,"

"Yeah…" I trailed off uncomfortably, and what perfect timing- her older sister came to the table with the woman I told to politely leave just now tailing behind her, and just as Capscaria said that too!

I tried to save face, "Capscaria's fine," I said, "just… a little bit drunk, that's all."

Either she didn't care about my "flirtiness" with her married sister just now or was just willingly ignoring it, either way the girl in front of me left all of that out and simply said-

"Is she now?" Nalera, the… 2nd? 3rd? Eldest daughter of house Tequi- which if I'm right, specializes in business and stuff, so definitely an influential house, - didn't look convinced and stared at me with her eyes narrowed into suspicion.
She crossed her arms across her chest in a way that emphasized her bust, "and why, do tell, did she get herself drunk? She doesn't do this, so as her sister, I demand to know what would break her innocent habits and turn her into this slurring whore."

You're the whore. You stupid bitch- I thought as I looked away from her cleavage, "well, Pearl abandoned her so she thought that being self-destructive would fix all her problems,"

"Oh, and you did not tell her to do so? To be "self destructive"?" She accused.

"No?" I replied, "what makes you think that? She was the one who kept asking for wine- yeah I guess I am a little bit at fault for leaving her alone but-"

"So you do admit it!"

"- It's because I didn't want to stop her," I stared at the girl behind Nalera, her name, I think I remember it now, it should be… Zayn? I think? "And again, shut the fuck up." I said to her politely.

"See? I told you her mouth is crass- the bitch thinks that she's so high and mighty just because she earned herself a Pledge," she huffed and I silently called her a hypocrite, so its fine if she says bitch but its not when I do it? "And anyone would be able to reach her levels of power should they possess the same Pledge, including you Nalera,"

Nelera rolled her eyes yet kept her head even, which meant that the only one who saw her do it is me, evidence for this is the smug smirk that was still plastered on Zayn's face which… if they can keep the same expression without changing it throughout entire conversations, isn't that proof of them being more plastic than flesh? Why aren't they being studied? I'm sure the eggheads would just love to learn how to harness their natural hardiness.

"First off," I grabbed another plate of meat, "Pledges are all given equal in power," I started eating, "and swhechond," I smiled when their faces scrunched up into distaste, "yhur bhoth vhitches."

"A princess acting like some barbarian," Nalera said with a scowl, "disgusting, come on, let us go. I'll tell father about Capscaria's debauchery later."

Zayn followed after her silently and I was able to eat in peace-

FOR A GOOD 2 SECONDS before another bastard came up to me and this time, the guy had the audacity to pull the chair in front of me and place himself on top of it, I looked up before proceeding to look down when I realized that it was just the lowest ranking member of House Whirlia- he's a starting character too, with low base stats and the type of party member that you ditch for someone better halfway through the game.

Useless. Not worth my time. At all.

Capscaria, the NPC sitting right next to me, has more uses than the guy.

"Hello, Neophyte," from the corner of my eye, I spotted his derisive smirk, "you do realize who you just offended correct?"

"Uhuh." I drank another mouthful of shake, "and? What about them?"

"Might I tell you that house Tequi has a lot of influence across the city due to their myriad of businesses?"

I nodded and continued stuffing myself.

"My point is, dear Neo," I visibly rolled my eyes at his attempt at being chivalrous, "Whirlia can help you stave off the rolls of advertisements that'll your name later this week-"

I threw a piece of bone to his forehead and gave him a dry stare, "what?" I raised an eyebrow, "Whirlia is below Everlast." I pointed out, "you dipshit."

"Yes but you do not have your father's or the royal court's support-"

"And I'm still a Pledge Bearing Everlast despite that." His dumbass looked befuddled, "what? You think dear old daddy is just gonna let people sully the Everlast name? Course not," I finished my shake, "now fuck off, I need to finish my meal before it gets cold."

"How crude," he stood up while shaking his head, "and also, it is a wonder where your body hides all of that food in,"

It burns it down immediately after I eat it, obviously, that's because a Pledge Bearer's body is effecient but I've been waiting to say this so- "it hides it up your ass,"

He walked away fuming and I continued to eat while thinking that Politics fucking sucks. Seriously, what's the point of all this? Doesn't everyone have anything better to do than mind other people's business? Like I don't know? MIND THEIR OWN?

But hey, with him gone and the word of my "barbarism" and "crudeness" spreading across the venue, I at least managed to finish my food before someone else came and this time around, their presence was a surprise, even for me-

"Zath?" I asked the woman wearing an owl mask while wearing the azure dress I gave her earlier this afternoon- and what's with that mask?! That's such a bad disguise! What is wrong with her?! I held back a giggle but then turned serious once I realized just who she might be here for, "Inferno's not here, and even if he is, I don't think the guy's a good fit for you Zath."

"I am not here for him," she replied, "also I am not Zath, you may call me, Nia."

She flourished a supposedly masculine bow that bent her body halfway while moving both her hands to the right, oh- Oh I know what that gesture meant and I would love to dance with her, but I want to playfully mock her first. A friend doing this is genuinely rare so-

I made a show of rolling my eyes, "genius, absolutely genius," I chuckled, which turned into a fit of laughter, "really? Nia?"

She stayed silent so I decided to take her invitation and held out my hand, her light-blue gloves met my whites before she pulled me up from my chair and with a smooth smile, she said, "you look stunning, mistress,"

She ignored my earlier jab at her chosen nickname but I'm not gonna give up! "Call me, Phyte." I said with a smirk and flinched when something stepped on my foot. "Hey!"

"You look absolutely gorgeous, Neo."

I smirked, "what? Straight to nicknames already? At least buy me dinner first,"

"You stuffed yourself like a pig," she said dryly, breaking character.

I laughed, "uhuh? And? I'm still thin!"

"Stop trying to make me jealous," Zath- Nia pouted.

"Jealous? Whaaa- pfft. You're already perfect in my eyes Nia, why would I want to make you jealous of my super efficient body?" I wiggled my eyebrows.

"Effecient, you say?" I nodded.

"Of course! I mean I can go all night long if the need arises-" I stopped when Nia suddenly started to giggle, which then started to heighten, "Nia?" She didn't respond and just kept giggling until she was bent over laughing-

"This must be some sort of cosmic joke." I heard her say.

"Well, no matter," Nia straigthened herself and lightly lifted her mask, then a hand carrying a white handkerchief went up and wiped the corners of her eyes, once done, she fixed her mask, faced me and with another bow, she once again held out her hand, this time around though, she decided to be vocal with her intentions, "would you care for a dance, my lady?"

Now, by this time, the two of us were already somewhere around the center of the ballroom, where other socialites are gathered in preparation for the slow dance that is scheduled in a few minutes- and since Nia already giggled her heart out just now, that meant that we already have gotten the attention of a few people and when they saw me, well, they thought that I was here looking for a dance so some bachelors walked over to me but when Zath- sorry, Nia said that she wanted to dance with me, well…

"You like girls, Neophyte?" A confused Pearl to my left- who had around 3 Noble guys circling around her like little seagulls waiting for food, - asked with a genuinely confused tone, "I thought… you were just some sort of workaholic but… this… makes sense… too… I… guess?.. Sorry- I need to go." She finished weakly.

I watched Pearl move away from us before facing Nia with a smirk, I took her hand, stopping every other guy from approaching, "I would love to,"

And if it just so happens to be that the dance started the moment that I grabbed Nia's slender hand then… that's just a coincidence, isn't it?

The music started slow, a smooth crescendo, one that slowly rose as the different nobles started to find partners for the night, bit by bit, more instruments got added, first a violin, then a flute, followed by the soft chimes of a ukelele, which was overpowered by the two prior instruments, turning into nothing more than a supporting sound.

Nia started to circle and I followed after her, moving opposite to her, where as she raised her foot to the right, I moved by raising one foot to the left before then pulling my body towards that direction, the two of us circled each other twice before she raised her hand, her fingers interlocked with mine before her other hand found my waist.

I smiled and played along, raising my hand and putting it on her shoulder- which she glared at before gesturing to her own waist with her eyes. So that's how she wants to play it?

"So, tell me, mistress, what do you prefer your partner to do in this situation?" She asked as my hand finally found her hips, we were in an odd dancing position, suffice to say but honestly, why not? Nia's probably having fun-

I focused back on her and saw her staring at me curiosly, "mistress?"

"Uhm." I paused, thinking, what kind of things did I enjoy doing while ballroom dancing? "Well… I've always enjoyed it whenever I spun you around," I answered.

"Very well," Nia's reply was quick and her actions even quicker; she raised her hand above her head before smoothly sliding her index finger into the gaps between mine.

Nia nodded, an invitation-

I obliged and put some force into my other hand and pushed, making her spin followed by a giggle, I allowed her to spin once before I locked our hands again and grabbed her waist, "thank you, Nia,"

"No, thank you-" She replied just as the walls of the ballroom went down to reveal a lush garden full of orange dots- no, Phoenix Butterflies. "Huh," Nia murmured, "I could've swore that they would've only brought down the walls after the first song,"

"It has already finished, my lady," a passing noble said to us before dancing away.

I giggled, "well, you heard him!" I slowed my steps, and so did Nia, "now, I think I wanna appreciate the view for a while instead of dance, wouldn't you say it's beautiful, Nia?"

She leaned in, "you know, the funny thing is, here, when someone says that the Garden is beautiful-"

"It's a confession!" I finished her sentence for her. I completely forgot about that! This was high noble society damn it! Not some Japanese RPG game so I thought complimenting the damn thing was natural- "Oh my god- I'm so sorry-"

You know, I don't know if she was just playing along with my "confession" but for some reason, Zathania decided to kiss me on the lips.

And what's even more confusing is that I… reciprocated.

Huh.

Chapter 7
Capscaria jolted awake and immediately saw an unfamiliar ceiling. She groaned, the words of a certain disgrace echoing inside her head, she totally flunked everything last night didn't she? 'I'm gonna heed her advice my ass,' she said to herself as she sat up, the first thing that she noticed once she did was that she was fully clothed, "What?"

Did some guy seriously just bring her to their room without trying anything? She laughed, not caring that her voice sounded hoarse or even that it was atypical to be seen doing so. An esteemed lady such as her, does she really hold no value? She groaned and let her body fall back into the bed, hey, at least it felt comfortable-

"You should get up," the voice of a girl, young? Was she the wife? Or maybe her rescuer? "Mistress Neophyte would soon wake up and I have plans that I want to enact before she does," Neophyte… that name sounded- Oh! Ohhhhh- she remembers now! So that's what happened, she thought it was just some sort of fever dream.

Can the princess really eat that much? What about other Pledge Bearers?

"An entire table of meat… Pledge Bearers are lucky," she murmured as she got up.

"No, that's just Neo," she heard the maid- well it should be Zathania if her memory serves her right, "she's… unique like that."

"Uhuh, so you're telling me that normal humans don't usually eat an entire table for dinner?" She joked with a smirk to which Zathania nodded seriously, Capscaria groaned, talk about being a golem, "okay, you're serious, you said you had plans?"

"Yes," came the blunt answer, "see, I do not know if you know this but Neo is being asked to marry by her father,"

"Big deal, she should get on the ride, everyone does it." Capscaria rolled her eyes then eyed the maid, "so what? Our little princess doesn't want to marry so you want to?.. What? Exactly?"

"Oh, no-no," Zathania shook her head, "the problem isn't the princess but rather me,"

Raising an eyebrow, Capscaria looked the maid up and down, she didn't seem like a guy, with her ample bust and wide hips, heart shaped face and well, smooth shoulders, not broad, smooth. And all of that is shown perfectly despite the maid outfit she is wearing, and Capscaria briefly wondered how the girl would look should she wear a proper dress but dismissed the thought.

"Okay, you're the problem, got it." she chorused, "what kind?"

"I like her," came the unexpected yet expected answer and Capscaria had to laugh and she continued to do so, stalling for time and hoping that it was some sort of sick joke but no- Zathania was serious, her face was still and as stoic as a statue while staring her bed-ridden form down, Capscaria stopped laughing and the maid cleared her throat, "let me correct that, I love her."

"Right. Girls loving girls. Because the princess' life couldn't get any weirder right?" She said with a smirk, "I never knew she was a dyke,"

"She isn't," the answer was quick, "and I would not prefer to be called such an insulting term but yes, I am lesbian,"

"Yeah, good luck with your little hidden love story and keep pining for Neo," Capscaria waved the maid off and stood up, "I'm gonna go back to my husband and proceed to bear a child, like a normal woman."

"The same husband who cheats on you?" Zathania retorted, making Capscaria snort.

"Cheat on me?" She growled out, gesturing to her petite body, "do you really think he would do that?"

"Well, you're right," Capscaria smiled smugly, "it wouldn't really be cheating if he never touched you right?"

"Wha- Yes he did!" Why did she bother to reply so quickly and so aggressively? That just gave off the impression that she's defensive didn't it? She bit her lip and glared at the maid, "we've slept together once or twice before,"

That was a weak defense wasn't it? Especially considering how long she's been married…

"You do realize that House Phagea is a major noble household that trains maids correct?" Capscaria nodded and ignored the implication, its not like maids liked to gossip- they totally do don't they? "And you also realize that I am the daughter of the scion of that house also?"

"You're father's the scion?"

"Yes."

"Well so what?"

Zathania leaned in, "it means that I can ask any maid out there for information and get an answer," she smirked, "and from what I've gathered, you and your "husband"-" she raised both her hands and air quoted condescendingly, "- have separate rooms, and from what I've gathered, your marriage was more than just forced, I remember back then, come to think of it, House Tequi and House Nari marrying their two youngest children so that the latter can earn financial support while the former earns a bit of land-"

"Shut up."

The maid continued, uncaring of her threatening tone, "so tell me, Capscaria T. Nari, how's the land that you got from your marriage?"

What other reply could she give other than try to slap her? And of course it fails. Because of course the maid is combat trained, house Phagea also offers the services of battlefield ready servants don't they? It's expected that the daughter of their scion would be trained in such arts. She should've-

"Your husband doesn't like you," Zathania let go of her wrist and Capscaria's hand fell weakly, "as his family sold him and their lands to yours unofficially,"

"And?" Her voice was breaking now, but Capscaria held strong, "so what?"

"Well, I can offer you an opportunity to move on from such a pathetic, loveless marriage and not feel guilt in regards to it," the maid shrugged, "just do as I say,"

"Do I have a choice?" The gaze of the maid told her no. Capscaria closed her eyes, "... fine."

"Good. I want you to spread the word that you've had a threesome with me and my mistress,"

What? "Sorry, can you repeat that?"

"You heard me."

"YOU-" Zathania's glare stopped her shout short, "You'll ruin my name!'

"And? Wouldn't it have happened already? Last night, the only reason why you didn't wake up naked next to some other guy is the fact that you're with my mistress, she decided to help you, otherwise your reputation would've been hurt."

"I can always just refuse, I have the power to do that," Capscaria refuted.

"I have maids all across Everlast, spreading the word of you "having a threesome" isn't that hard, you personally saying it just makes it valid and not a rumor."

Capscaria sighed. She really didn't have a choice, did she?

Capscaria found herself staring at the sleeping form of Neophyte, who for the sake of her guest's- Her - modesty, decided to sleep on a chair instead of her own bed, and at the thought of that, the young noble found herself glaring at the princess' personal maid, "Neophyte is so kind and yet… you bother doing this."

"I admit to that guilt," the maid replied, "but… - And I am also admitting to being a failure of a maid and servant-" she looked away from Capscaria's eyes, "but… I… want to pursue my feelings, even if it means that I'll hurt her."

"What do you think Neophyte is gonna do once she realizes that you're the one who actually spread the rumors of the threesome?"

"... I don't know." She sighed, "but what I do know is that her reaction will hurt me like I hurt her at least, I suppose it's payback," she gave out a shaky smile.

"Well…" Capscaria turned away from Nia and towards Neophyte, she was breathing lightly, causing her chest to move up and down, the young noble smiled when she saw that Neophyte still hadn't changed out of her dress, did she plop herself on the cushions of her chair and just immediately fell asleep? So much for a princess of Everlast and her generation's most prodigious Pledge Bearer.

Capscaria sighed, it was better to let all the stress out- "... at least I'm not being forced to this by some backwater, useless, mundane noble from some random no-name house that dragged my drunken ass to their room the past night for 2 minutes worth of humping."

"Silver linings," Zathania smirked.

"Yay~~" Capscaria faked a cheer.

Igneous Sear Everlast sighed and stared down at the member of House Tequi kneeling in front of him, this is way too early for any royal proceedings and yet here he was, already sitting on his throne at 6 o clock in order to deal with the most recent issue his strayed daughter has given him. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, it is best to face the music, Igenous.

The King opened his eyes once more, "repeat what you just claimed."

"I'm afraid that it isn't a claim, Your Highness," of course it isn't! He heard his servants tell him that his daughter brought a drunken girl to her quarters last night!

"Yes, of course," Igneous did his best to smile, "now, say that again."

"I… admit to the guilt of having a threesome with your daughter."

His anger bubbled and reached its boiling point- "WHY?!"

The girl flinched but she remained stoic, "I… have no idea, it was just a spur of the moment thing-"

"I get that, I get that." Igneous bit out, "I just want to know why you decided to spread the word around,"

"I- I thought that the maids who came to my presence at the guest's bathroom were Zathania so I talked openly and-" This girl is an idiot, Igneous concluded, which means that he's not dealing with just a simple mistake, Tequi is gonna have to ask compensation for this, and Nari as well since… well, Nari could be dealt with easily enough, and perhaps Tequi might even want the marriage of the girl in front of him renewed…

Hm. Capscaria also isn't a bad marriage partner for Neophyte either… And Tequi is a good house…

"- that is why I am sorry, for I have made the grave mistake of sleeping with your daughter."

"You are forgiven, dismissed." He waved her off, the sooner she leaves his sight the better he can handle the upcoming storm, "there is a flying carriage waiting for you on the sky path of the castle's rightmost wing, take that and go."

"As you wish," the girl shakily stood up before bumbling out of his throne room.

Igneous looked to the side once the girl left, "so, Falya, what do you want to do now that Neophyte has shown no interest in men?"

"I do not know…" his wife admitted, "but perhaps her brothers and sisters may talk her out of it? Who's awake right now?" She turned to the butler standing to the side, "Can you call them?"

"I shall,"

And whether he hated it or not, Igneous now has some peace and silence for himself, time to think about the girl's mistake. Which will last until the butler comes back with his children.

The King closed his eyes and forced himself to start thinking about his stray daughter- Neophyte is… talented would be the wrong word, she is prodigious in all the right ways, she's smart, capable of using powerful Light Techniques, and her Pledge is one of the most powerful ever recorded, up there with those who joined forces with past Heroes.

But she's also problematic- that word is also the wrong one to use in order to describe her because Neophyte is, for the lack of a better term, catastrophic with her chosen choices, as proven by the unspeakable thing that she did when she was young.

"Well," Igneous opened his eyes when a new voice echoed across the throne room, "would you look at that! Pearl wasn't lying!" A laugh and the King turned to his third oldest son; Basalt is a complicated child, with his own whims and choices that seemingly stray from Igneous' own, yet at the same time, he is talented, but that doesn't really stop the wake that he leaves behind whenever he does something.

He is handsome, with a face that reminded Igneous of his younger self.

"She really is a Dyke!"

Has a problematic mouth too.

"Don't call her that," Falya scolded and Basalt only shrugged- shows his respect for those older than him.

"Don't treat our family members like that," Cobalt, his 5th youngest grabbed Basalt's head and pushed it down. Igneous nodded at him gratefully.

"Still unexpected though," Adamantite, the oldest and most proficient when it comes to using Light said with a small smile, "I'm happy for her but… I'm also quite concerned, what would happen to her when she doesn't want to bear children?"

Igneous silently noted that his son said doesn't and not couldn't, aware that Adam wanted to plant the idea of her being a useless Queen who would marry someone who can't get her pregnant should the time come.
It was a wholly unnecessary political move, let alone one that's done so early in the morning but if that is what the boy wishes to do then why not? It's not like he's incapable of earning the place of crown prince. He has the talent for it, so he might as well learn politics.

Neophyte has to compete with her older brother for the title of Crown Princess. That much is evident.

"I say just let her be," Bismuth, said as he passed through the door of the throne room, the glare he shot at everyone was harsh, "she wants to love girls, then what's the harm? It's not like it'll kill us,"

"It may very well have the chance of normalizing such a way of thinking," said Igneous, "should I remind you that she is a role model to most of the girls in Everlast? As she is both a princess, a dream of every little girl out there, as well as a powerful Pledge Bearer, which is also their dream, I suppose."

"They would want to imitate her," said Bismuth, "is that what you are implying?"

"Yes."

"So what?" Bismuth said, "The girls of Everlast are doing well for themselves because of their wish to be like her, so what's the harm of trying to find their desires? Unless you're calling love wrong, father?"

"I did not imply as such," Igneous replied quickly and before The Goddess overheard such a blasphemous claim, "now, personally, I want to hear from her about what she wants to do." He sighed, Goddess have mercy, how is she late? "Which begs the question, where is Neophyte, Zathania?"

His daughter's personal maid stepped forward and bowed, she had been standing there for the better part of an hour now and so far, has taken the tiny punishment he'd given her well.

"She is sleeping in her bed your highness," she said, "once miss Capscaria left, she has decided to continue her rest, should I call for her again?"

"Do it." The maid nodded and left.

"Now that I look at her, Zathania is pretty beautiful isn't she?" Adamantite hummed appreciatively, "I wouldn't mind having someone like her as a concubine,"

"Sister would have your head for that," Cobalt mentioned.

Adamantite shrugged. "I'll fight her, I can take her on."

"Like all the times where you fought her and lost?" Basalt said with a derisive smirk, "when she goes all out, sister's the strongest fighter out of all of us, you cannot possibly hope to beat her with your… lackluster Techniques yes?"

"Are you implying something?" Adamantite growled.

"Children." Igneous commanded and they all stood straight.

"Everyone here knows that your sister is simply on another level," he said the truth, that much is fact, and Adamantite is talented, yes, but he's… sort of a specialist, while Neophyte is both a generalist and a specialist, someone who has learned martial arts- and anything else she's sought to learn all these years, - yet also capable of using Light Techniques like no other.

And she knows so much about Light and how it functions that sometimes Igneous wonders if the Goddess had somehow given the girl secrets in order to better repent for her sins, as she simply knew too much for it to be natural.

But perhaps that's just her talent, "now, since you all decided to stop bickering, let us talk about the possibility of her going to Pledge Academy."

Chapter 8
"Zath, you can't possibly be serious?" I placed my hand on my hips and tilted my entire body to the right, "we didn't have a threesome," I said with a raised eyebrow while staring the maid down, "and why would Capscaria even try to spread that sort of thing? She's married." I emphasized, "that's the worse thing that could possibly spew out of her mouth, and she already said something about the Demon Lord so…"

"Well, maybe she was misremembering things?" My maid suggested, completely ignoring the last part of my sentence.

I nodded at her, "I guess that does make some sense but not enough," I narrowed my eyes, "seriously, do you really think that some stuck up noble would just throw away their marriage and ruin their name?" I snorted, "what's next? The skies are gonna rain fire?"

Well a fire rain is a possibility in this world but that's not the point. And Everlast is a floating city anyway, which means that by technicality, it cannot have rain since it's above even the lightest rain clouds.

"I guess it is bad for Capscaria's current marriage but I personally don't think it's a bad thing, especially if she wants a divorce," I rolled my eyes, of course Zath would say that, why she wanted to imply that Capscaria is unhappy is beyond me though, "and it's not like there aren't rumors about you running around out there already, so she's not really changing much at the end of the day, I say I'd agree with her personally,"

Yeah… just because there are already rumors of me going around out there doesn't mean I want to add another one- is something that I didn't want to say because Zath had a point, I managed to live past the rumors and have since learned to ignore them so what's one more? Sure it involves my love life but I'm pretty sure there were people out there saying that I'm a slut who kills the people who fuck me so that they don't spread the word or something- so overall, that's nothing new.

Still a piece of shit move on Capscaria's part though, and after I've helped her too. But-

"Fair point," I conceded, it's entirely Capscaria's fault but again, it's not like she's here so I can't really talk to her, might as well move on and deal with this on another day. "So with that being said, why does Dad want to call me?" I asked again because Zathania caught me just as I was about to train, so I'm not exacty fit for a court audience right now, and preferably, it would be great if I didn't need to go there at all.

I continued pushing my point, "I mean, it's not like the threesome thing is bad right? Dad has a bunch of concubines! And sure, Dad's also pretty traditional, but that doesn't mean that he hates same sex relationships?"

No really, since Demons exists, people usually just turn their hate to the damn things instead of some mundane shit like being gay, and usually, same sex marriage is only hated because the couple can't have a child- which means that they can't produce a soldier that will go out into the world and fight Demons for the betterment of mankind.

Thank Goddess for mutual enemies?..

… Well… the genocide is also bad-

"I don't know?" Came Zathania's uncertain answer, "but you're right, you won't really get punished for it. I think." She looked down and eyed the floor, her expression thoughtful, "but if you want my opinion… then I think it's because they think you decided to have sex with a married woman."

"Ah fuck." I kept saying that but never realized just what it actually means.

I dashed out of my room without bothering to change out of my sportswear, I didn't want to waste time now, not when Dad is probably seething at the fact that I just made two houses fight each other. And worse, he's in the middle of the crossfire because of me, and that means he's extra mad 2x.

I ran past all the maids cleaning our quarters, a sleepy Amber, a Pearl who didn't look like she slept, and a yawning, but aware Ruby, all of them quickly avoided me as I rushed out while they tried to stop Zathania, keyword here is tried because one is sleepy, the other one didn't sleep, and the last one is drowsy- all of them failed to even grab hold of her and Zathania simply dodged them without any effort on her part.

She's definitely getting punished for that later.

When I reached the stairs, I jumped down from the highest point and to the floor, I almost knocked a surprised maid when I did but who cares about that, I had a meeting with the king, which is more important than the tray of food she was carrying- actually I grabbed a toast slathered in cream cheese and a cup of coffee from it.

It's expresso, nice.

A few turns and a straight path later and I was in front of the double doors that led to the throne room, which were open, with the guards that would usually be placed in front of it when closed positioned on the other side, staring at me with the rest of my family.

I gave the guard on the left side of the door my empty coffee cup and walked forward shamelessly before bowing to the King, "I'm sorry I am late, father, and I would also like to apologize for my state of dress, I was about to train, and when my maid reached me-" said maid came out of the double doors panting after I said that, she nodded in confirmation to my words, "- I was already on my way to my personal training room."

"..." Igneous remained silent, which means that he's probably angry, "cut the formalities, Neo." I stood up and relaxed my entire body, "I never knew you were…" His face looked like he was swallowing something bitter, "...a lesbian-"

"I'm not." I said with crossed arms, "and I didn't have a threesome, I only helped Capscaria because she was drunk."

"Of course," he replied calmly, "but if you wish to be as such-" didn't he hear me? What the fuck old man? "- then I, nor the rest of your family will not stop you," would a slow nod be bad here? Or will not acknowledging the King's words be worse?

I settled for replying with words, "whatever it is that Capscaria said," I started to say, "is not valid because I'm pretty sure that she was drunk and was misremembering things," I pointed out, repeating Zath's words, "I just brought her to my room last night because she was wasted, nothing else happened after I did,"

"... Is that so?" Igneous looked thoughtful and I hopefully thought that things would be fine but that hope was quickly dashed away-

"Sorry father, but may I cut in?" A formal sounding Pearl- oh wow, how the hell did she put on make up that fast? Did she do it while she was walking here? - said before walking into the throne room with tired steps, "I do not know why my sister wishes to hide her preferences,"

"I'm not hiding anything." I defended.

"But I assure you that I saw her kissing her dance partner last night-" now that got the attention of everyone else in the room because I don't just pick dance partners in social gatherings, let alone kiss them. Damn it Zath… "-which is a girl."

"Okay that one was supposed to be a joke-" I tried to defend.

"Was it?" Pearl narrowed her eyes and I tried not to look at Zathania as I gulped, I mean… yeah? But I'm pretty she's gonna get hurt by me saying that. Point being- "Because you were laughing and giggling as you danced, you didn't sound like you hated it, nor did you act like the situation was funny."

- It was supposed to be a joke damnit! That's why I was laughing! Because my maid and my closest friend decided to disguise herself and ask me for a dance! The entire thing was fun to me but why- I looked Zath in the eyes, she looked conflicted and I will ask her about this later, why was she even in the ball in the first place?

I sighed, I hate it when my problems pile like this, "I didn't- hate it, I mean."

"And there you have it." Pearl said as if she just unveiled some massive secret, "your daughter wants to marry girls, that is why she never picked any of the marriage partners that you presented before her,"

I closed my eyes- at this point, why not? It's better than admitting I'm older mentally and don't really want to marry or even be in a relationship with a bunch of teenagers.

But even then- "I'm not really a lesbian though," I defended one last time and everyone started to look tired but no one said anything so I took that as a cue of them thinking things through, "I'm just… not interested in anyone at the moment."

"And the kiss?" Pearl asked with a raised eyebrow.

"That one doesn't count." I raised a finger, "and will never happen again until I die of old age,"

"Sure," she rolled her eyes before turning around, she started walking back to the throne room's doors, I assume to go back to her room and sleep.
"And Neophyte, thank you," for what? I wanted to ask but she beat me to the punch, "I… shouldn't have treated Capscaria like that, even when she said those words."

"Yeah, yeah," I waved her off, "she kind of deserved what you did honestly, but not being thrown away like that."

"I suppose."

When she left, I turned back to my father to ask for permission to leave but he was faster, "you can go back to training, Neophyte."

I nodded, didn't say anything more, and left.

Going back to my room was much slower than it was last time, and compared to my sprinting spree earlier, I moved like a slug as I walked through the halls of the castle with Zathania in tow, I did my best to avoid looking at her even when I wanted to ask her several things- I was ignorant, not stupid, and when she decides to leave all those breadcrumbs behind, I can obviously put them together when I put my focus into doing so, as for where it all leads… well, I don't think I want to talk about it in the open, which is why I waited until we got back to my room but before that-

"Neophyte." Amber sounded pissed so I had no choice but to face her and… oh fuck, that maid earlier was carrying food to her? What the hell? What are the chances of that? "Care to tell me why you not only jumped down from the top of the stairs like some sort of street rat running away from the guards but also stole food like some orphan from my personal maid?"

I looked at said maid and… oh fuck me- how the hell didn't I see that? "I can explain."

"Do it," She started tapping her foot impatiently.

"Okay, so you know when I rushed out of here?" Amber nodded, "and you know how I was trying to be quick?" Again she nodded, "well Dad thought I had a threesome with a married member of House Tequi and well… he called for me."

"I thought you were trying to turn the castle into your training ground again- also, none of that is related to the food you stole." Okay the food thing is understandable because I was just sort of hungry but what? Training? Again? Did I do that in the past? Pretty sure I didn't. "But enough about that, let me reiterate, you said that Dad thought that you had a threesome with someone from house… Tequi?"

I winced, I mean, it's not like Tequi is a bad house… but they are pretty influential- "well, when you put it like that then it sounds like I kicked the balls of Adamantite or something."

"You might as well have," Amber growled, "because you slept with a married member of a house that has a major share of businesses across Everlast."

How can someone so calm be so threatening? I wondered as I scratched the back of my neck, "I didn't though… I just brought Capscaria to my room-"

"The one who married into Nari? The small household?"

I nodded, "- because she was wasted and would've been taken advantage of."

Amber sighed, relief flooding her features, "I heard about what she said in that carriage," I winced again, word really does spread fast. Does that mean- well pretty sure the entire castle knows about my crass language by this point, "and saying the name of such a merciless mass slaugtherer is a big deal but Neo," I hummed and was hugged before I could react, Amber started rubbing the top of my head, "- you did good,"

"Thanks,"

"You are welcome, dear sister," She broke the hug and giggled, "and… next time, don't just randomly steal my food like some sort of desperate lower class. There's plenty of that in the kitchen."

I didn't know what to say, "Yes?..."

And with that minor confrontation done, I made my way back to my room, ready to face the music as well as the consequences of what I was about to do. Our relationship will forever change because of this but I still waited for Zathania to close the door behind us, and when I heard the thud, I closed my eyes and whipped my head back, time to face the music-

"Alright, can you tell me what you've been doing all this time?"

"What do you mean?" She asked.

"Don't play dumb." I retorted, "after everything last night and what happened this morning, it all clicked for me, and the kiss back at the dance, was it really fake?"

Zathania had an unreadable expression, she closed her eyes, "Mistress-"

"I'm not stupid, Zath." I crossed my arms, "all the little things, even the threesome? Really? Why would you even-"

"I'm afraid you're mistaken, just give me the chance and I can explain?" Zath said quickly, cutting me off.

I nodded and gave her the chance, she heaved, "I- what I did last night was a simple joke to be exchanged between the two of us," okay, good to have confirmation on that, "and… I do not truly know what happened with Capscaria but I did not have anything to do with the rumors about the threesome," another confirmation, but I still need to talk to Capscaria about this. "and… as for your suspicions on the little things, I do not know about them,"

Well, the touches during dressing and the tiny flirtatious words that occasionally come out of her mouth were my suspicion but if she didn't know about them then… fine.

I sighed, "I trust you, Zath." I said softly, "and I hope you're telling the truth."

"I'm… not." She said shakily, "just not the full truth, I suppose,"

I nodded, "then that's good enough," I walked forward and hugged her, "we've grown up together and there's no one in Everlast that I will trust more than you." I broke the hug and gave her a winning smile, "and between you and Capscaria, then, I would believe your word over hers."

"Thank you, mistress." Zath had unshed tears on her eyes, "and I am sorry."

"Why?" I asked.

"... nothing," she replied.

I broke the hug, "well, I guess it didn't really hurt me in the end so if you're worried about that then it's fine," I tilted my head downward and met her eyes, "god this height difference is annoying," I said with a giggle.

"I'm fine with it, it… shows who's the one on top when it comes to our relationship." See? That is exactly what I meant by flirtatious words! What the fuck Zath?

I giggled, "what?" My maid asked, she touched her cheek confused, "is something wrong?"

"Nothing," I waved her off while stifling my laughter, "Sorry about that."

Maybe I just have a dirty mind?

Chapter 9
My eye caught an orange fist- a hammer swing to my right and I canceled my slash and went for a duck before putting my feet behind me and taking a major step backward, repositioning myself into something more favorable- out of the pincer attack and into open space where I can freely swing my rapier.
The dummies who were about to sandwich me turned their heads quickly in reaction to my movement while the closest one sent out a devastating punch towards my face.

I was forced to raise my rapier to block the fist capable of denting steel, it connected to the broad side of my sword, my Pledge held strong but the hit made me stagger and pushed me back, I held out and waited for the dummy's hand to stop moving, when it did, I didn't hesitate and dropped a low kick to its shins.

Its wooden body met my calf bone head on and I grit my teeth through the pain and forced my body to push through it and continue the low kick, which eventually succeeded- the dummy was off its feet.

I pulled my rapier back before stomping on the ground and quickly executing an upward slash while I straightened myself and stood up, my blade met its wooden body and the dummy split in half. From within, I felt the Light inside of its doll-like body start to dissipate and disperse into the air as the vessel that contained it now had leaks.

That was one defeated, three more- I started a running dash and moved to the center of the dummy formation, which by now has broken apart from the chase, giving me ample space to execute attacks and slashes without hindering the movement of my sword.

I attempted a backstab that ended in vain because my target got protected by the dummy next to it, I took a single step backward and aimed for debilitation instead- striking joints and slashing necks in a vain attempt to stun lock the unfeeling dummies.

Despite them being literal puppets, they reacted like they would be killed and started blocking my slashes.

In a sense, these guys were like the Demons that I am training to fight- uncaring about the pain that they couldn't feel and wouldn't react to any wound unless it directly threatens their life, in this case, aiming for their necks works for both the Demons and the Dummies.

Also- just because they can't feel pain does not mean that their joints can keep moving when damaged.

One my slashes connected to the knee of a dummy and the human sized doll buckled to the left, I kicked it away before taking its position and dodged both a kick and a punch that went at me at the same time, then, a moment later, I turned my head to the Dummy right next to me and slashed at its neck- it raised its hands and blocked my strike, and now, with its "face" shielded, nothing stopped me from kicking it to the other side of the room.

Now there was only me and the remaining dummy.

I didn't use light, was under the effects of heavy gravity, and it took me 4 seconds- 4. That was how long it took me to break apart a formation of 4 Demon Captains, the lowest ranking when it comes to their 'nobility'.

Most people would consider this good enough, and I do too, truth be told.

… but as I stabbed my rapier forward and used both the weapon's as well as my arm's natural length for maximum distance and struck the chest of the dummy- I couldn't help but think that the Demons would win against humanity if I can't defeat these guys in a single exchange while handicapped.

With light, I can decimate them no matter how many there are but if I can't fight four of these guys simultaneously while underpowered then what's the point of all my training?

It's not enough- never will be- not when the entire world is under threat because of what I did-

I shook the thoughts off and removed my blade from the chest of the dummy and turned to the two shambling forms coming closer to me, the one that I disabled was heading my way slowly while the one that I kicked to the hips was slow, but not slow enough. With an internal yell, I charged at the one with the broken knee and decapitated it with a single slash before moving on to the other one and removing its head from its shoulders.

6 seconds? 8? No- 10. That's how long it took me to defeat 4 Demon Captains without the use of Light.

Not fast enough.

I turned off the gravity well of my training room before opening the door and tossing all the broken dummies out, Zathania would know what to do with them so I didn't bother with their "corpses" and I closed the door and increased the gravity well a quarter before maximum.

I was close to reaching the natural limit of my training room's gravity well which means that I have to put up a request to upgrade it to military grade soon.

It will probably take what? A month more before I reach it? Maybe less now that I've increased the intensity of my training.

I couldn't waste time- I… stared at the control gnob and considered if I should increase the strength of the gravity well- it's only two more weeks before I go to Pledge Academy, and when I get there, I'll have little time for personal training because the Academy's focus were on a large number of subjects, not just fighting Demons or physical training.

I needed to get stronger fast.

I walked forward and felt the strain, I decided that it wasn't good enough and turned back to the knob that controls the intensity of the gravity well. It was now or never-

I decided to increase it by a noticeable amount, enough that my entire body felt like it was being crushed.

Now? It was time to start working out in earnest.

Walking felt like hell but that was good- pain usually is when one is physically training themselves.

Inching over to the treadmill, I hopped onto the track and walked until I was in front of the control panel, and with gritted teeth from gravity weighing me down, I grabbed the handle to my right and fiddled with the panel in front of me, the treadmill turned on and was immediately on the last speed I left it at- I almost stumbled before I managed to slow it down enough for me to gather my wits.

I did a small jog to get used to the current weight and estimate just how much speed was enough for my current strength, and when I did, I decided to go over the top and put the speed around an extra mph from my own estimate- and the result was me needing to do long, painful strides to even keep up but I managed to do it in the end, it was painful, yes, this is all going to be worth it-

I ran for exactly 30 minutes before my aching body decided I was done and when the treadmill got turned off, my legs collapsed and I had to force myself to get back up, and standing there, full of sweat and racked with exhaustion, I realized just how much work I needed to do in order to reach my goal of reaching the maximum weight of the current gravity well.

And I won't just stop when I reach it either, I need feel completely fine when under the effects of maximum- I- I need to pick up the slack-

15 minutes later, I felt fine enough and pushed the on button of the treadmill again to start running.

I repeated the process one more time before I considered myself done and walked over to the weight lifts in order to work on my hands, and this time, readjusting the weight was easy, before long, I was lying on the bench with my hands clasping the handle of the barbell, I took in a heavy breath and removed it from the rack-

400 Reps. A hundred was the standard before I put the barbell back on the rack and took a break for 15 minutes before repeating the process again. When all was said and done, my hands felt sore, my back ached, and my chest burned, it didn't feel pretty but again, exercise was always like this, I'm just pushing myself beyond what I would normally do-

"Mistress," I bit back a curse, Zath calling me that instead of Neo means that someone from my family is outside.

I removed myself from the bench and with painful steps, walked to the door and turned off the gravity well before opening the door, "Yes? Zath?" I put on my best smile and stared at the person behind my maid, "and Amber! Whoa, nice seeing you here, what's up?"

"That's what you always say whenever you want to hide something from me," my sister mentioned skeptically, "so, Neo, what's up? For you to say that?"

"I increased my training?" I can't really lie to her, I found that out early on because for some reason, she just knows. There's no ingame lore that says anything about her "intuition" either, it was just there.

"By how much?" She narrowed her eyes.

"Well my hands are aching and my legs are wobbly from just weightlifting and the treadmill alone so… that's as good as answer as any?" I replied and she sighed.

"Well at least you're doing that when your body is halfway through developing," she smiled warmly, "that's fine, we only scolded you back then because you were pushing yourself despite being so young,"

"I'm a Pledge Bearer," I pointed out.

"Yeah, and you were puking blood." She retorted with a dry voice, "anyhow, I just want to say that your maid can join us for breakfast if she wishes, father has told me as much-"

"We're only friends," I said and Zath nodded.

"Yes, yes, friends- but again, father has given permission for her to join us on the table for breakfast,"

I slowly nodded, "okay… that's good, right?" I turned to Zath who only smiled, "yeah, it's good."

"And that's all I want to say, also, breakfast is two hours away, as always, so it would be good if you leave this place before that,"

"Yep. Noted." Amber turned back and proceeded to walk away.

"Zath, uh, tell the chefs to prepare a small feast for me alright?" I asked my maid before she escorted Amber out of the gym.

"Of course, mistress."

Closing the door again, I sighed, "one and a half hours," I said to myself, "that's how much time you have left to work on your sides, your abdomen, and your center. No biggie, no pressure, just… increase the gravity so that you can increase your gains- yep."

The next hour and a half, I can only describe as Hell.

I walked out of the training room feeling pain all over my body- Zath greeted me and I smiled weakly at her, "your hot bath is ready, mistress,"

"Oh thank god-" my own body seemed to have forgotten my fatigue because I rushed towards the gym's bathroom, pass the locker room, into the bathroom before immediately jumping into the bath with clothes still on, which I shook off now that they were wet.
A little while later, Zath stepped forward and grabbed my sports bra, my pants, as well as my undergarments while looking at me dryly, I shrugged, "I can't help it," I let myself sink into the euphoric warmness of the tub, "I was tired and I need my muscles to relax,"

"If you say so," she walked away without saying anything more.

The door closed behind her. Then, a little while after that a knock, "Neo, your new set of clothes is here,"

I smiled, "Thank you~~~"

I arrived to the dining hall two minutes early yet feeling refreshed and wearing a new set of sports gear, Dad kept eyeing Zathania as she walked behind me and blatantly did so even as we both took our seat, me as always alongside my fellow Pledge Bearers at the center and Zath with my more… lower ranking and less influential siblings to the left.

Igneous spoke first, and what timing, Dad just had to wait for me to drink water first didn't he? "Are you not gonna sit with your lover?"

I almost did a spit take but I swallowed the water down and I calmly placed the glass onto the table before giving him an exasperated look, "Dad? What?"

"Neophyte, I am trying to be supportive here-"

"I"M NOT GAY!" I shouted, paused, then said, "sorry," he nodded, "what the- ever loving mother Goddess are you doing?!"

"Neo, it's fine, I do not care about your preferences in lovers," Igneous said in a soft voice, "and if you're worried about your choice then I am completely fine with it, both functionally as well as politically, the scion of House Phagea has told me of his woes in regards to the letters that his daughter sends as well, and those are about Zathania's desire to serve you and nothing more, hence why she has "no time" for lovers."

"Zath?!" I turned to her. You were supposed to be my lifeline damnit!

"It is true, though, mistress." She replied without an ounce of shame, "and no, I do not want to sit with her, as she is not my lover."

"See?" I turned to Dad, "I'm not gay!"

"Is gay another word for Dyke? Sister?" I shot Quartz an ugly glare and the little shit grinned, my youngest brother, one who's still sitting on the left side of the table can joke like this-

"Huh, gay." I heard Bismuth say, "clearly you have thought this through if you created a term for it correct? It must've been stuck in your mind daily,"

"No-" I bit back my tongue, "yes." what's better? Admittance of my past life where that word exists or say that I created a new term to bless their coded NPC minds? "And it's not… Dyke or an insult. It applies to everyone, guy to guy, girl to girl."

"Wow. I'm impressed, dear sister," Byzanthine clapped, a smirk tugging on her lips, "truly impressed."

"Oh sure," I rolled my eyes, "impressed, that's nice," I glared at the older princess as well as my fellow Pledge Bearer, "anything else? Sister?"

She smirked, "nothing~~"

The King cleared his throat, "food is about to arrive, so I suggest that you all should stop your bickering," he said, "and also, Neophyte, since you clearly wish to be in the role of a man's, then I have thought it through and have considered your gift for your acceptance in Pledge Academy,"

Wait, I was already accepted?

"Acceptance is a rather odd word to use father," Pearl pointed out, "as the Academy head essentially kneeled for you to allow her to go there,"

Igneous cleared his throat, "I suppose so," he said, "but regardless of your method of admission, you will earn a gift much like the rest of your siblings who managed to pass and enter the school and thus, it is with a smile that I have granted you permission to enter all the stables found on castle grounds so that you can find a suitable mount,"

"Even the dragons?"

"Even the dragons yes," he answered easily, "though I suggest a griffon as they are the fastest flier, making it easy for you to go back to the castle and visit Zathania during your breaks,"

I stood up, "I'm honored, father, and I thank you for such a generous gift," really, generous doesn't put it because not even Adamantite, the guy who's supposedly the future crown prince, got the chance to enter the dragon stables.

"But I'm not gay." I added.

"Of course sweetie," I turned to mom, who was smiling, "you are not." Everyone around the table chuckled like it was funny.

I'm not joking!

Chapter 10
"It is our honor to have someone as esteemed and powerful as you walking through our stables Lady Neophyte," I only smiled in response to the pleasantries of the stable hand, everyone says that no matter where I go so at this point, I just nod and smile.

The stable hand gestured all around us, "This stable is the only one present in the entirety of Everlast, as no other place has the capacity, manpower, and resources for the upkeep of raising multiple Dragons at the same time,"

Nod and smile.

He chuckled, "Well I say multiple but-" he chuckled as if it was some sort of inside joke, I forced myself to chuckle as well or else things would just feel awkward, "there are only 5 for now but the King is hoping that a new batch would come from the South soon,"

We both turned a corner, "as most of the current batch has been generously gifted to multiple allied Kingdoms in order to bolster their forces and hinder the Demons from continuing forward, and not to mention, helping in the defense of the Omega Faunas as well,"

Something struck me just then and I ignored his words as a frown grew on my face, I was focused on a certain part of his sentence, specifically, the number of Dragons here in the stables- 5? I thought there are only 4 at the start of the game that the player can buy? And it's not like anyone else in Everlast had a Dragon to themselves so who could possibly the last one be?

Well… if I follow the timeline- including the Hero's Death, - there should be 5 Dragons here but… I thought it would only happen during the Player's second playthrough?
A creeping feeling crawled down my gut and made my stomach churn and I started to jog my memory for the fifth Dragon in Everlast, and one that is owned by someone else inside the game.

As I mulled over my thoughts, the stable hand continued, "and though I am sure that someone of your stature would prefer the strongest Dragon that we have, I'm afraid that simply isn't possible as that one is already an adolescent and thus is smart enough to not forge an unbreakable pact with humans, and, even when he was young, for some reason has always refused to do make one no matter what."

An adolescent?.. I bit my lip, the timeline checked out, and it wasn't the timeline that I want.

"We did our best to take care of him-" translation: it is not our fault, that things ended up the way they did, "- but for some reason, no matter how many bribes we offered, he just wouldn't allow anyone to take him,"

"Uhuh," I said, I wanna ignore the possibility of that for now- I didn't want to think about possibly abandoning an intelligent child and leaving them alone for 16 years, "and, if you said that there are only 4 Dragons left here, between all of them, which is the strongest?"

"Well… we have given the strongest from their batch away and thus most of them are currently weak- but- BUT! I assure you that with your pact, they would have the potential to grow into a menacing beast of extreme violence," wow, that's so reassuring, extreme violence, can't wait, I thought sarcastically as the stable boy rubbed his forehead, "so I hope that you find them satisfactory-"

I sighed, might as well face the music.

"I want to see this adolescent Dragon of yours," I didn't wait for the guy to reply and simply walked forward.

Ingame, there were 4 Dragons in total that the Player character can purchase or get in the royal stables at the start of the game: and they are color coded to show their elements. Said colors are as follows: Blue for water, Grey for wind, and two Reds for fire.

That makes four in total and that should've been the number of the Dragons at this very moment- however, if the player buys the game as a pack (or later purchases the extra content at the shop,) after they beat it the first time- they would be gifted with a black dragon at the start of their journey.

And that Dragon, in lore, should come from the Everlast Castle, in this very same stable but was taken away to be given to the Hero as a child and that Dragon would've been with him until this point but…

If the hero died then…

I took a turn, these stables were easy to navigate for me, I've played through the games so many times already that I know this place by heart-

I stopped walking from the sheer shock of the sight in front of me and it wasn't because I was scared of the 20 foot long, 10 foot tall, dragon with glistening black scales that look like the night sky…

"...Fafnir." I spoke out loud, the guilt of the Hero's death rushing to the surface-

"MURDERER!"

"HOW COULD YOU!"

"YOU HAVE DOOMED ALL OF US!"

"HANG HER!"

- Oh. What have I done?

The Dragon's eyes snapped open and glared at me like I was its lifelong enemy.

I couldn't say anything as it stood up and lumbered forward, the stable hand, who has been trying his best to get me to turn back and go to the other Dragons instead now has abandoned that plan entirely and simply ran away the moment that Fafnir started walking towards me while I…

… stood in place, I couldn't move- It's all so wrong- I fucked up so badly. I-

"I didn't know." I said with a cracked voice, making the Dragon pause for a split second but he soon resumed his stride, a hollow laugh escaped my throat- "all this time you were at the back of my mind- and- and-" my eyes started to blur and something warm ran down my face, "I thought this was supposed to be the first run-"

Idiot, why would there be a first run?

"- and I thought that you didn't exist-" Fafnir growled and I collapsed on my knees, not out of fear, but out of guilt, I wiped my eyes and stared at the towering form of The Dragon, "I- I'm sorry!" I wailed.

"I- I didn't know-" why am I repeating myself?

"Your potential got wasted because of me-"

Something pushed against my chest and I looked down to see Fafnir's nose pressed against it, 'Foolish.' His words were garbled, a small sign that he has never practiced the telepathy that was solely unique to him before this, 'Why?'

"I'm an idiot." I answered, "and you're right… I'm foolish," I grabbed his snout and leaned forward, "you… probably were waiting for him huh?"

He nodded, 'Gone.'

"No. I killed him." Fafnir shook his head.

'No.' He said, 'Strayed.'

Strayed? What? "What are you talking about?"

'Fate.' He said, 'cruel.'

That is the vaguest description that I have ever gotten so I tried to guess, "are you saying that somehow, he wasn't discovered?" A nod, "but- but I told people about him! Everyone- he should've been found out sooner- I can't-"

'Belief?' I tried to parse what he was saying, 'Young Princess.'

I thought those two words through- "so no one believed me because I was a child huh?" I chuckled painfully, "wow that's… and I guess that's why he wasn't discovered early to be trained too right? Because no one wanted to believe that some farm boy is the Hero of Legend." I laughed, "so it wasn't just my fault that he died to begin with because I sent him on a death quest that he should've beaten but was also the reason he died in the first place." Just how many times did I fuck up? "If he had been trained as a child, then he… probably would've been fine."

'Fine.' He said, 'chance,' he added, 'Demons lose.'

"They will?" A shrug. "Wait… sorry, let me reiterate, you said that things are fine," he reluctantly nodded, "that there's a chance," another nod, this time more energetic, "that the demons will lose."

He chuckled heartily, 'Spoke.'

I giggled, "I- I guess you're right, you did say it yourself didn't you?"

He nodded and it was then that I felt something tug at the back of my mind, 'Pact?'

"You want to make a Pact with me?" A nod and I decided to study the offered contract, it was… my eyes widened, "a lifelong one?"

'Death.' He lifted his head and gave me a feral grin, 'Apart.'

Well if that's what he's saying then, sure, I smiled and accepted the Pact, "Till death do us part. Fafnir."

Fafnir's power enveloped me and I felt the world turn-

A memory, one that I had long since forgotten about. Computers didn't exist in this world and yet even after living here for 16 years, I still recognized the one in front of me, how could I not? I built the thing myself, did jobs to pay for the materials, and spent so much time in front of it that it's forever stuck in my mind.

It was a humble little thing- a beige screen on top of a maroon wooden desk, a rainbow keyboard and an 'EAT. SLEEP. PLAY. REPEAT.' mousepad.

My memory cleared and I saw what was written on the screen: A description, it was nothing more than flavor text back then, background lore that the player can read on the many easter eggs throughout the game and this one can be found on a cave, written over on the stony wall is-

Legend has it that when a Pledge Bearer makes a Pact with a magical creature of extreme might, their powers converge and mix before erupting into new heights. This process not only makes them more powerful, it also increases their overall potential.

A nigh ethereal voice that I could no longer recognize came from somewhere in the room, and I felt myself choke on my non-existent tears-

"So this is Everlast? Do you think you can let your brother play with you *&!@@**&?"

But the process of Pact binding isn't always so easy, because painful memories connected to the concept of binding would resurface, a reminder of what was once lost and the suffering will have to endure because of that lost but-

"Sit down, it's about time I act as the teacher damn it!"

Something warm pressed against my sides, then a chuckle made the vision ripple, "well, teach me,"

I smiled. God… everything is such a jumbled fucking mess and I wonder just how long has it been since I've left? How much time has passed for everyone back on earth? I wonder if they've finished building that moonbase…

- the memory is also a reminder that although the the binder has lost a piece of themselves, it wasn't always all bad and they should encourage themselves to move forward, time waits for no mortal, after all.

As my vision ended, I found myself staring at the ceiling, now broken apart from the pressure that exploded out of my and Fafnir's body as we made the Pact.
I stared at the open blue sky, then groaned before sitting up. The sounds of chains snapping apart got me to turn my head to the sound and there, I saw an armored guard dangling from Fafnir's neck.

I giggled, "wow. How effective. The Omega Faunas better watch out-" I wheezed when something hard bumped into me. Turning my head again led me to see my mom's hair, what is she even doing he- oh, "how long was I out?"

"Two hours." Igneous, the King of Everlast walked forward and the guards standing between me (well, Fafnir, I don't think they consider me a threat,) and him split apart to let Igneous pass, he chuckled and eyed the powerful Dragon, then back to me, "you really don't do things halfway, huh? Dear daughter?"

I grinned, the feeling of solemnity that washed over me now gone, "Nope!"

Okay, so, pop quiz- So when you successfully make a Pact with a powerful Dragon that ignored all those that came before you and get a surge of power never seen on a regular, non-hero human for the last 100 years, how do you think will you get rewarded for it?

Food? Wrong answer. More power? Keep searching. Then what about medical attention and an entire afternoon of checkups?

If you guessed the 3rd one, then you'd be correct! Because that's exactly what happened to me after I made a Pact with Fafnir- it was all just… nonstop check ups and other shit related to my increased capacity for Light and how it affects the altered physical state of my body.

And like always; it was the usual result where I was considered as "prodigious" and with "an amazing body" that's far above the league of anyone else my age and even those slightly older than me.

Oh wow? Really? Who knew that after all my training, I've reached a level of power that's far above everyone else?

Now why is this important? Well, it isn't- not for me because it did nothing but get the doctors to do more tests to make sure that I was at peak capacity (I was,) and by the time we were done, it was around 3 o clock and I've missed 3 hours of my weekly scheduled aid to the people living below Everlast.

Nevertheless, I was considered perfectly fine now and what's more, the three hours that Fafnir spent away from me wasn't wasted because when we met up on the airstrip of the hospital, my own dragon (I cannot not feel happy whenever I say that,) now had a saddle strapped to its back as well as a layer of armor made from Holy Silver on his belly.

The guy looked badass and I couldn't have wished for anything more. He faced me with a sly grin, 'shall we leave?'

Huh, guess he practiced his telepathy in those three hours. Also, is it weird that he sounded feminine? Regardless-

I grinned, "YES!" And I was so over the moon that I hopped over to him before jumping high and landing on the saddle butt first, "this is gonna be so amazing," I said as I placed my leg on the support of the saddle, I kicked it and whipped the reins, "Now! Up we go!"

Fafnir chuckled before taking to the skies.

So Griffons are usually considered fast, and so are Pegasi, but, somehow, those two flying species of creatures didn't have shit to the natural capabilities of a dragon- especially when said dragon is 20 feet long with a wingspan that's almost twice as large.

I had a feral grin when I looked down and saw that Fafnir's body cast a shadow over the city of Everlast, and I couldn't help it, I tapped into our Pact and empowered him to make him go even faster, inciting a loud sonic boom to erupt when he flapped his wings again.

How many people in the city below us yelped from that? I wonder? Also- did I kill someone-

"Do you think we killed someone with a heart attack just now?" I asked my Dragon who shook his head, making me sigh in relief. "How do you know?"

'Life Sense.' He? She? She sounded feminine- replied, she is probably the right word to use, 'a standard ability that comes naturally to us dragons, as without it we would have a hard time searching for prey,'

I smirked, "thanks for the trivia, but if you were gonna tell me stuff, at least tell me when we would leave the city of Everlast."

'When?..' I felt Fafnir's smugness as she said that, 'we're leaving now.'

And that was how I came face to face with a skyward view of an entire horizon of green, wherever I looked, there was nothing but grass, and I started to giggle at the sight, eventually turning it into joyous laughter that broke against the howling winds. I kept laughing and laughing at the absurdity of riding a Dragon before Fafnir decided to ruin everything by diving down to the ground and I went from laughing to screaming at the top of my lungs.

We broke past the clouds but I was too busy holding on for dear life to notice, I kept buffing myself over and over again as we continued our descent and I only ever really stopped when Fafnir straightened her body and slowed down.

'And thus, we break past the clouds, and Neophyte?' her giggles echoed inside my head, which only worsened when I glared at her. 'Learn to have a bit of fun,'

"That was not my idea of fun!" I yelled, "I thought I was going to die!"

'Do you really think I would allow that?' She clicked her tongue, 'give me that must trust or else I'll feel hurt.'

Ah. So she was still getting used to her telepathy. That's an opening if I've seen any, "That must trust?" I said with a grin, "what?"

She flicked her forked tongue and I felt something warm hit my face, I wiped it off my cheek and gagged, "did you just spit at me?"

'Aih don gnhow? Dhid Ai?' Each word spoken in telepathy were followed by her jaw unnecessarily moving and miming human speak, and with her tongue out no less!

She sent small droplets of saliva my way every time she spoke, I started to squirm and she had the audacity to ask- 'Niyaphithe? Whutt ish hwong?'

"Stop! Stop!" I said once my face was finally clear, how is she so good at aiming? "you should be more tactful!"

'I am a dragon, we do whatever we want.' She smirked.

I held out my tongue, "Bleh."

Thanks for sharing! Love the story so far. I'm excited to see how it will continue to develop.

Chapter 11
'Say, since you didn't know what to do earlier, how do you usually decide on where to go?' Fafnir asked as we descended on the outskirts of the town that I had randomly chosen. Which has been reacting poorly to her presence given that she was a dragon.
We did our best to look as peaceful and harmless as possible, but in retrospect, we probably shouldn't have circled the village in order to announce our presence the first time around, because doing so was probably similar to how a dragon scouts its food when they find prey.

Oh well, nothing we could do about it now.

"Usually? I have a schedule," I say with a shrug, "Before you, I used to go on this flying carriage full of supplies, which also has a coach guiding it and the guy knew what to do most of the time so all I really needed to do is sit back and wait for the door to open and when it does, taking out a bag full of stuff and giving it to the people,"

'I don't see a bag on my back, nor do I see a large number of them.'

"We don't really need it," I kept a close eye on the ground as Fafnir started to descend, unecessary but I want to keep doing it just in case she gets shot down or something- that is my only reason for doing so, nothing else.
Anyhow, her getting shot down is actually pretty unlikely but you can never be too sure. Also, she looked confused so I decided to elaborate, "The bags aren't really needed since I already did a seed run the past week, which means that everyone here has been growing crops, all I really need to do now is make they grow to maturity using Light."

'Good to know,' I smiled down at Fafnir, 'so you do this weekly?' I nodded, 'that's a bit too much, even for a princess, where do you even get the funds to do this?'

"Eh, this is my own monthly budget," which is actually pretty large because the Everlast Family doesn't just get their money from taxes, but also from the items and tech being imported out of our city.

She gave me a weird look and I shrugged, "I don't really know what to do with it since Dad just gives me anything I ask from him anyways. And every time I try to save I just stare at the cash in front of me and think 'wow, don't I have too much? I should probably spend this before my room is full of money three days from now,'." That was an actual thing that happened, and I was forced to promise to everyone that I will never hold physical currency ever again, "and that's why I buy food and other stuff for the people below Everlast."

'... you don't hoard?'

We descended and I looked around while thinking of a reply, we were a few ways off to the town that we were suppose to help but that's exactly the point, I didn't want us to land in the townsquare and get battered by pitchforks, thrown torches, or arrows that can possibly hit me so we decided to land in a remote place.

We started walking and I decided to reply to Fafnir's distasteful comment for my money squandering-

I scoffed, "of course not, you think I'm some sort of dragon? And besides, with the way I use Light, I can pretty much never go hungry. Ever." I admitted, "I can just grow crops or hunt for food when I'm nowhere near a city or if I am near one, then work as a Slayer and earn money, then buy food and lodging. Cleaning myself isn't really a problem either, since I have Techniques for that."

'Goddess you humans have so much to worry about, I thought it was just food and water, not homes, hygiene, and whatever else you have going for you, clothes, I suppose count as well.' Fafnir sighed sadly, 'I now pity you poor fools.'

"Oh- haha- good joke you overgrown lizard- oh, there's a mob in front of us and I'm pretty sure its your joke that caused this," Fafnir rolled her eyes as I raised my hand, both to stop Fafnir from walking forward and to signal the mob that the dragon had a human companion, they stopped walking and I put some Light into my throat and used it to amplify my voice, "IT'S ME! NEOPHYTE! SEND SOMEONE OVER AND CONFIRM IT!"

From the distance, I could see that the villagers looked at each other before they started to bicker, only to stop when some guy walked forward and started making his way towards me and Fafnir.
When he arrived, I immediately recognized him as the first born son of the mayor? Hmm… I forgot-

I cut that train of thought and greeted the guy with a smile and a wave, "Zaden! How have you been?!" I exclaimed with a grin, "how's all those stuff-" what did I give these guys last week again? Other than the seeds, that is. And I needed to remember just in case someone talked to me about it, "- that I gave you last week! Which I totally remember. Yep."

"N-Neo? It's really you?"

"In the flesh!" I did a superhero pose before giggling. I ignored the way his cheeks turned red and continued, "so, how have you been?"

"Y-you have a Dragon!"

I blew air out of my nose, "pfft- this gal? Don't get fixated on her! I'm talking to you here!"

"An ado-adolescent Dragon!"

'Neophyte, I don't think he's thinking straight,' pointed out Fafnir and I snorted.

"He's fine, he's usually like that when he talks to me, all stutter and no words." I grinned.

'He likes you romantically?' I gave a nod but didn't say anything, no need to lead the guy on, or let him be aware that I know he likes me, he'll find someone else and forget me eventually. 'Well I guess… the red cheeks did say that out loud didn't it?'

"Yeah…" I trailed off while scratching the back of my neck, "... that happens. Too. Which is pretty loud."

Honestly I don't know how to deal with this. This is why I avoid romance damn it!

"Neophyte!" The mayor? What is he called? Whatever-

"Baron Polt!" I grinned, "how have you been?!"

Unlike his son, the man actually managed to answer my question and not just stare at my Dragon.
I locked eyes with him, yeah, that's right, my eyes are down here, not up there, "I'm doing well! No thanks to you, that bag of medicine you gave to our doctor last week has really helped us." He laughed before facing Fafnir, "and who might this be?"

"Fafnir!" I called and my dragon leaned her head downward before placing it on my own head, she was heavy enough that I had to use Light in order to keep my neck straight, "she's a good guy so you don't have to worry, I know because I made a Pact with her earlier this noon-"

"THAT WAS YOU!" The son of Baron Polt- he didn't correct me so clearly that's his father's title, - yelled out as he pointed at me with widened eyes, "EVERYONE FELT IT AND IT WAS YOU!"

"Yeah? And?" I replied dismissively, "I do things like that all the time."

'No you don't, I would've felt it if you did.'

I patted Fafnir's lower jaw, "sarcasm, Nir. Sarcasm."

'I do not know what that is.'

"Sucks to be you," I retorted.

"You're talking to her right now?" The mayor asked and I nodded, "so a telepathic Dragon. I never thought I'd ever see one. You guys do exist after all."

"Yeah, she's unique like that." Her telepathy is an open secret by this point and as for just how unique that is, everyone who played Everlast back in my world knew that the animal pet "Fafnir" is unique in a sense that it has dialogues for some reason or the other. Hell, the Dragon will talk to the player character if you do something as simple as turn to it and press the interact button.

No other animal/pet ingame does that.

I clapped to grab everyone's attention, it's about time I cut the slack and do what I came here for, "so, do you guys have any crops for me to grow?"

The work that had been cut out for me, in the end, was standardly simple and expected: I followed the Baron to a massive field of crops and I was asked to make them grow quicker, and since that is what I came here for, I used my Light to give the town an early harvest, which the people appreciated- shown when a large number of them ran out and started cutting the crops like there was no tomorrow.

I rode Fafnir out of there after that and as we took to the skies, my Dragon asked me something that none of my past carriage couches dared to say, 'aren't you giving them too much?' Her voice was concerned, 'not that I am against it but you are giving them more than they could possibly consume in a season, and that's not mentioning all the other problems that aren't just spoiled food, things such as taxes, trading, and the like. You're affecting the economy are you not?'

"Eh, they'll probably get fat eating it all in a week tops, they're bored and having nothing better to do but eat." I smiled warmly, no kids or teen can dare looking malnourished on my watch, "but about the economy thing, I want you look down," Fafnir did and I followed it up with another question, "what do you see?"

'I see a bunch of humans harvesting crops, what else?' She replied naturally.

"What else- Fafnir, is that all of them are harvesting it on their own. For their own." I pointed out, "those crops aren't owned by anyone, not even by me and my fellow aristocrats, but in a sense, it's also theirs." I smiled warmly, "and I've always told them that they can grab whatever the hell they want the moment that I grow those crops, and they do."

'Aren't there problems related to that as well?' I shook my head, 'what?'

"Yeah. No problems there, only at the start. Those guys know how to avoid each other and to not let their children go into the fields during their "harvests" and they're not really stealing anything from each other when there's so much of the stuff."

'Huh. That's…'

"Over reliant on me?" I finished for her.

'I was gonna say efficient but yeah. That's bad, isn't it?.' I smiled wryly, is Fafnir pessimistic?

"I don't think so," I said, though I know that it'll be bad in the long term, but if it works now then what's the harm? Things will always be bad on the long term, that isn't a question, and besides, Everlast needs a fighting force against the eventual horde of Demons that'll come here when the schoolyear starts, and keeping the citizens fed and healthy would give us a better fighting chance now that the Hero is gone.

"If it works now, then we can worry about the little things later," I smiled softly, "now come on, we have a few more villages to go to and we need to reach them all by the end of the day,"

'How about this,' Fafnir started to say, 'I can do a flyby and then you can just grow their crops, simple, effecient, and we would be done helping the two territories in just under two hours because of it,'

I hummed in consideration before shrugging, "sounds like a great idea," I grinned, "lets do it."

And that was how we spent our early afternoon, going around all the villages found across the Fauna and Flora territories and helping them grow their crops.
By the end, I got a rough estimate on the amount of power that I got from my Pact with Fafnir because even after going through miles' worth of farmlands, my power was only exhausted a little over halfway through.

That's around what? 3x in growth when it comes to my Light reservoir? Pretty big difference.

"I wonder how everyone else would react to me when I tell them that?" I said to Fafnir with a self satisfied grin, we were now flying back up to Everlast and leaving behind a group of no doubt confused villagers, "I was already powerful before our Pact but now? I'm pretty sure I can fight Bismuth and win even without using Light."

Oh, and I guess It'll make it easier for me to reach my goal of reaching the maximum output of the gravity well of my training room too. I know that I should be happy about it but it just feels like I'm cheating for one reason or the other.

What's that term again? The one where people don't think they deserve what they have? Imposter Syndrome?

'I don't think they'll even react to my presence,,' Fafnir said, 'hours have passed since we made that Pact and I assume word has already spread,'

I frowned, Baron Polt was surprised but… by now… ugh- "You're right. I hate it. But you're right." My dragon chuckled, "well, whatever, I can probably still parade you around and make everyone else eat dirt for not making a Pact with an adolescent Dragon."

'Arrogant,' Fafnir huffed, 'I cannot believe that I made an unbreakable, lifelong Pact with you.'

Come to think of it, why did she do it? I felt uncomfortable talking about why she was so willing to do it back then but I also want to know why she wanted to do it so readily, and eventually, curiosity did win over so I patted my dragon's neck and with a sigh, braced myself for the upcoming conversation, "why did you immediately make a Pact with me?"

Did I sound accusing? I hope I didn't sound too accusing.

'... It just felt right, I suppose,' she replied while keeping her eyes on the sky, we broke through the clouds again and this time, with her leveled position, I managed to react calmly when the wetness of the clouds struck my skin, 'I don't know why, but I mistook your presence for the Hero back when you entered the stables,'

I smirked, "uhuh," I replied, "Isn't the Hero's presence meant to be unique when felt by every magical being in this world?" How the hell could she mistake that?

'As I said, I mistook it, presumably because of the amount of power that you possessed at the time made me do so,' she supplied and I felt satisfied enough to leave that subject be for now, also partially because I felt a bit guilty, she probably doesn't know what the Hero's presence feels like because the guy died early on, 'so when I opened my eyes and saw that you weren't him, I thought you were the rumored Saint instead but…'

"I also wasn't," I said with a wistful smile, "I'm just a workaholic who wanted to repent for what she did, so I worked hard and continued pushing myself even when I was puking blood."

Really, if I knew that guilt can override my own natural instincts to stop exercising, I would've killed someone in my past life and immediately started exercising. If I knew that I wouldn't stop pushing myself because I already felt like shit- if I just knew that I can continue working hard because of my past actions- just to let myself feel anything other than heart wrenching guilt and not cry tears of pain-

'I guess…' I broke out of my thoughts and focused back on Fafnir's telepathy, 'but you were powerful enough that I… wanted to give my original purpose another chance so for once, I stopped brooding and stood up, and as I heard your apologies, I thought that maybe the world isn't doomed after all.'

"Thanks," I hugged the dragon's neck, guess bracing myself was uncessary since her reason was as mundane as it was heartwarming, I grinned, "are you regretting your decision?"

'After what we just did?' Fafnir moved her long neck and turned her head towards me, she showed me a half-faced grin full of fangs, 'I'm thinking that I was right,'

Chapter 12
Zathania could only watch in the sidelines as her mistress effortlessly dueled her older brother, if before it would have taken quite a while for her to defeat Adamantite, now, she cut through his attacks and read his movements no differently than when she's taking a walk.
For a while now, Zathania has silently wished that she could help her mistress in such matters but alas, she doesn't have a Pledge and is nothing more than a regular human- unsuited to fight against the horde of Demons descending upon humanity.

The best case scenario- assuming that is, that Zathania joins the military to fight Demons, - for her would be that she gets placed under the command of Neophyte but the princess becoming a general is still far off into the future- she hasn't even started her school year yet, it was still one week and a half away.

Her becoming a general? A good six years assuming that Neophyte doesn't die on duty. Performance wise… well, Neophyte doesn't need to worry about something like that during her entire career, she's guaranteed to become a general.

"Hup!" Zathania's thoughts were broken when she heard Neophyte yelp as she back pedaled under the onslaught of one of Adamantite's Techniques- and the prince if Zathania might add, was the only one who's allowed to use Techniques in their duel.

The one that Prince Adamantite used is a fairly advanced one; a Technique that creates a fan of slashes in front of the user, creating a blockade that can potentially harm the enemy if they get too close.

As expected, the wall of strikes prevented her mistress from attacking but even Zathania- who's simply a mere spectator with little-to-no combat experience and only using the basis of her own combat training for judgement, let alone Neophyte, someone who spars on the daily, - could see that the Technique only slashes in front of Adamantite, leaving his sides and back open to be attacked.

And that is exactly what Neophyte did, taking a step back and repositioning herself comfortably before dashing to the left and sending a kick towards Adamantite's ribs, making him stagger with a heave and canceling his Technique.
To the left of Zathania, a few seats away, Graphite, the 4th eldest prince, chuckled at the sight before schooling his expression and turning serious not a moment sooner.

Noticing her gaze, Graphite turned to Zathania before sending her mistress a compliment, "your lover is really something isn't she?"

"Not my lover," Graphite's smile told of a story, a small joke shared between family members about the two of them being in denial about their love life because of Neophyte's current status as a Redeemer- or at least that is everyone's assumption as for why the princess doesn't want to admit to their "relationship" - but the truth is far more mundane, and that's Neophyte not being interested in girls.

Zathania could only silently pine because of it but… oh well.

"Of course, you two are just friends," Graphite grinned, ignorant of the maid's plight, "but you gotta admit, Neophyte's one hell of a woman isn't she?"

At that Zathania nodded earnestly, she turned to the battle for a scant few seconds and watched as Neophyte put pressure on Adamantite's defensive blocks with her flurry of attacks, leaving no second wasted in between slashes as she swung and swung without a hint of stopping. Or being tired- hm. Could she really last all night long?

Perhaps Zathania should consider cardio?..

A question for later- Prince Graphite is waiting and it's informal to keep him as such, "yes… I… suppose so-" she stuttered, "-Lady Neophyte is not someone who lacks in the physical department."

"Or any department actually," Graphite corrected with a shake of his head, "honestly, it makes me wonder just how she knows all the damn things she does, she's always been smart you know? Ever since we were kids she pretty much blew everyone else out of the water- and when she started working hard after she got her Pledge?"

The prince chuckled, "we all ate dust. Literally. She was fast enough to kick up a dust cloud."

Come to think of it, when it comes to the princess' knowledge… perhaps Zathania could shed some light on the mystery? After all, the princess has always been the studious sort- "Neophyte used to teach me as well, come to think of it." Zathania mentioned, memories of them spending entire nights in libraries as children reading books coming to resurface.

"Oh?" Graphite leaned in, "what kind of things was she "teaching" you?"

"Nothing like that," Zathania waved him off, "but back then, Neophyte would drag me to the library at night and she would grab some random book before starting to teach me, we would often only leave when it's past midnight."

Graphite chuckled, "really? That's… she's really something. We were sleeping and she was what? Teaching you?"

Zathania nodded, "yes, she says it helps her learn faster,"

"Hmmm… guess she does need to have a good grasp of the material in order to teach it, especially if she wanted to impress the person she's interested in," Zathania knew it was false, she knew but even then, the maid couldn't stop the heat that climbed up her cheeks, "you're blushing. Thinking about your friend got you going that much?"

Crass, but, that's Graphite, she supposed.

Zathania shook her head, "not… really-" a lie that she knows is personally true, and all those… nights would certainly agree, "- and as I said, we're not lovers."

He turned away while shaking his head, he smirked stating, "I didn't say anything about the pair of you being lovers,"

"I suppose you didn't, I'm afraid I was mistaken, then." Zathania lightly smiled before turning back to the duel between her mistress and Adamantite.

By now, the latter of the two looked exhausted while his opponent looked no worse for wear. In fact, Neophyte looked like she was even enjoying their physically demanding spar.

And the reason for why that is, is because unlike most Pledge Bearers who only rack up their power output and nothing more, her mistress has trained her physique till exhaustion, and such harsh training allows her to keep up with her style of fighting; the unrelenting movements, lightning quick slashes, and high speed.

She can keep going where others would fall down exhausted- and even now she didn't stop for a single second to take a breather as she pushed forward.
Adamantite, meanwhile, did train his physique but not to the extent of Neophyte, thus, he was feeling the strain of combat and as unbreakable as his sword may be, his hands can only take so much recoil from blocking before they start to feel the onslaught of attacks.

With Neophyte's fast-paced fighting style, Zathania didn't know what her mistress is doing as she attacked but what the maid did know is that Neophyte, in every sense, is an efficient attacker that utilizes everything at her disposal in her attacks- with her continuous momentum aiding in the way she moved, almost as though executing a dance.
Her high-speed also aided in her attacks, making them stronger and far more devastating than they had the right to be.

Even her footsteps helped, as she starts her attacks with her foot being the first to move and Neophyte utilizes it in a way that gets the rest of her body to go with it before the momentum goes back to her feet to repeat the process- allowing her to attack over and over again without stopping.

Most people described Neophyte's fighting as a dance but to the maid, her mistress' fighting style was like that of a well oiled machine- one that'll continue to move unless it has been personally turned off, or if it ran out of power.

And Zathania, even after staying at Neophyte's side for every duel, didn't know how to truly counter it.

Well, it's not like she's the exception, everyone else can't handle Neophyte's speed and that extends to the rest of Neophyte's Pledge Bearing siblings.

Well… except for one- the maid eyed Bismuth subtly, the prince was observing the battle with a pensive gaze and was no doubt analyzing everything that's happening in preparation for his own duel with his sister, and for a good reason as he's the only one who's so far managed to fight Neophyte's unboosted speed and win.

And when questioned, Neophyte always answered that Bismuth has a good mind for battle, one that can find counters to even the best fighting style.

Zathania didn't really believe her, but maybe it does have a small amount of truth to it. Personally though, the maid thinks it has something to do with the prince's Pledge- but there is no doubt that he's a genius in his own right.

And credit where credit is due, it is most likely due to his genius that the prince has most likely devised a plan to counter his sister's newly found strength- there are ways to get around it, that much Zathania knew, as there are martial arts out there that specifically specializes in using the force of a stronger person to their advantage, and Bismuth is most likely basing the counters that he thought of, off of said martial arts but sadly, Zathania herself doesn't know anything about them so unlike Bismuth, she is stuck watching the one-sided fight in front of her cluelessly.

She turned her eyes back to the battle while holding back a sigh.

Although there were others here like her- that is to say, regular, non-pledge bearing maids and butlers of the various princes and princesses, - the Pledges that everyone around her held looked so… so nice to have and she wishes that she herself could have one but alas, she is but a simple maid and the Goddess knew that, thus she didn't see it fit to bless Zathania with her own Demon killing weapon.

One could dream though.

"Lady," as Zathania made her way across the corridor, the maids that she passed bowed to her before standing straight again and continuing to wherever it is they needed to go.

Contrary to what most would say, the job of a Royal Maid is unending, as simply put, the castle is way too large for them to clean it all in a single day- and usually, there is a schedule, and it would make the cleaners move across the castle from left to right, moving slowly and meticulously on each day of the week as they go from one part to the next in order to clean it.

And by the end of the month, they have to do it all over again.

Zathania, fortunately, is not on cleaning duty- and even if she is, as a personal maid of one of the King's children, she would only need to clean the quarters of her mistress instead of the entire castle, - in fact, she's not on any duty at the moment, and with the free time on her hands, she intends to go to the castle's air strip in order to deliver her monthly letter to her father.

What she wrote during the entire month wasn't much, as most days are nothing but a repeat of the one before but she did write something relatively new in her letter-

And that was the acceptance of Igneous Sear Everlast of Neophyte's "preferences", which even to Zathania, the princess' closest confidant, is a complete mystery- Neophyte has never shown any interest towards anyone before, and those that she did are often not even humans, but tiny animals and items of value such as jewelry.

And those are a given since almost every other little girl or guy out there has found some love for material items or cute critters. Even Zathania herself has felt as such on rare occasions.

She reached the airstrip and silently ignored all the other servants milling about as she prioritized walking to a rail-thin man standing in front of a flying carriage pulled by four stationary pegasi, the mail man? Deliverer? - Whatever title the man may have - gave Zathania a wave, "A letter again?"

The maid nodded and held out a grey envelope, the man took it and Zathania prepared to leave but she was stopped by the man raising a hand, "wait, your father sent you something as well-"

Nodding, the maid waited as the man walked back to the carriage and rummaged inside for a good minute or two before coming back out with a small box held on one hand.

"What is that?" Zathania couldn't help but ask and when her words caught up to her, she frowned, that was a stupid question, of course the guy doesn't know, he only delivers, and if there is an appropriate answer to that question, it would be 'a box, obviously,' which in of itself is not really an answer but is more in line with blunt sarcasm.

"My mistake," Zathania held out an empty hand, "I'll take it from here, tell father I said thanks for the package,"

The man nodded, "I will,"

Knowing that the people there would soon leave in order to deliver aid to the barracks and fortresses that keep the Demons miles away from the city at bay, Zathania didn't disturb the people working there any longer and left the airstrip before making her way back to her personal quarters.

Once there, she walked over to her bed and placed the package down on the bronze colored sheets, she unwrapped it, breaking the first layer with the ease of a brown bear that has newly woken from hibernation tearing through a beehive in the spring. But seeing as it was Light imbued material, the wrapping wouldn't have gave to anyone but her, and those who tried would've put in extra effort in order to tear it apart.

Zathania placed the now inert wrapping on the drawer to the side of her bed before opening the package in earnest, the first thing that she saw was a pair of necklaces- two silver things with a sapphire and ruby locket hanging on their ends respectively, - and right next to them is a folded letter.

Zathania took it and started reading-

Daughter, I hope this letter finds you in high spirits.

I have personally heard from King Igeneous himself on what has transpired within castle grounds and I must say, you preferring women over men has been a shock to me but I welcome it, and I am happy to say that I accept your preferences regardless of what they are.

Still, words will do no good to convey my acceptance so I have bought this pair of couple lockets as a starting gift of acceptance for your relationship with Princess Neophyte, who, I know will be a good partner for you my dear daughter, I have heard rumors in regards to her debauchery but have found no proof of such things, as such, I trust her to take care of you for the foreseeable future.

Please give any of the lockets to her of your own behest, either one could work seeing as I have not been able to find a necklace that had Neophyte Jade embedded into their lockets and have had no time to commission for such an item.

Yours truly, the Scion of House Phagea, Line.

Putting the letter down, Zathania reached for the box with the lockets with shaking hands before grasping the necklaces for dear life- her lie had gone way too deep at this point? Hasn't it?

She gently placed the locket back inside the box before letting her body fall onto her bed. She grasped her cheeks and squeezed.

"Idiot." She said to herself, "why did you think that telling Capscaria to spread that you had a threesome was a good idea?"

And now, because of her idiocracy, Zathania Schema Phagea is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

In one corner, is the fact that people are accepting of Neophyte's and her's relationship.

… but on the other corner is the fact that said relationship is non-existent. Neophyte and her weren't in some secret lovers affair, in fact, her mistress would probably deny it, and she does whenever it is mentioned. On the daily. Vehemently.

Much to her chagrin, the open path that Zathania has created for herself also leads to her own doom, because it wasn't enough that the temptation to confess about her love for Neophyte is there, open for her to walk towards- but there's also the added caveat that should Zathania confess, Neophyte would be able to figure out of her misdeeds and well… she prepared herself for her anger but she expected it to happen when she and her mistress are already… deeply in love with each other-

- saying it to herself now really makes it sound like a pipe dream, huh?

"I hate this." If only she could spend more time with Neophyte, then maybe she could slowly explain the situation but the inevitable has already happened and her mistress has now entered Pledge Academy as a student, now Zathania has limited time to spend with her and worse still… Neophyte might even like some nobody in her new school.

Zathania wiped the tears off of her cheeks, "I hate this."

Amidst all her crying, she eventually fell asleep and later that night, she would dream of a staff made from silver wood, a two headed weapon whose ends were tipped with a Ruby and a Sapphire respectively- fire and water, and it was only until morning that she would realize what had transpired under the light of the twinkling stars.

I hate the maid, she should have been honest, not try to manipulate someone who has been nothing but kind to her and also ruin that someone reputation.

I have to admit, this is a surprisingly interesting story.

The premise of a (SI) party member accidentally getting the designated Hero killed, and being wracked with guilt that they are driven to burn their life out on redeeming themselves, it is a neat one. The interpersonal dynamics of being a part of the royal family, with 6+ siblings that are constantly jockying for position is pretty interesting to.

The existence of a definite Goddess in the setting makes me wonder if she's decided that the Protagonist is going to take up the Hero's place? That seems to be the implication from Fafnir.

I actually really like the maid subplot? It is indeed a terrible thing to do as a friend. But character flaws can add a lot of depth to people. Her maid loving her so much that she's willing to try and... force the issue, as it were, is a storyline that promises to have a lot of potential if pulled off correctly.

A few points of interest:

We don't know very much about the setting, so far we have received a steady drip of context as the character comments on things, and it is somewhat intriguing. But I want to know about the state of the Demon War, since it is implied that her home city is far in the backlines, where they send support forwards to the embattled nations, rather than being in direct conflict themselves.

We've gotten hints as to what the people think of the protagonist, split very sharply between "bad" for the nobility and "extremely good" for the peasantry. We've seen some hint as to why that is in this chapter, she goes out and actually does things for the people, rather than ruling from afar up in a floating castle most of the people of the land have never actually seen. I'd like to see more on this topic, especially since the nobility also seems to be torn between boasting her strength and sniping at her for her past mistake.

We don't actually know very much about what's going on with the Demons, we've had two different types listed, but other than that they are in a war with humanity, that is all we know.

I laughed extremely hard when I realised the only person she's shown attraction to so far is herself. What a narcissistic goober.

Having said that, there are a few issues to note:

The protagonist is a strange mixture of guild-bound imposter syndrome while also being arrogant. Now, this is an interesting character flaw if you want to go that way, but the two sides don't feel like they connect, the arrogance feels somewhat welded onto her.

The writing quality isn't bad, there are no spelling mistake and the grammar is largely correct, but in places it feels like it is both rushing through the scene for parts and plodding through others, I think the larger issue is the rushing, we don't even have any idea what her maid looks like, or what the king looks like for example. Knowing that he has a stern/soft ect face when staring down at her from the throne helps set the scene and give us insight into what kind of person he is.

We know that the protagonist is a "prodigy" that is incredibly strong, but what is the scale being used here? She noted herself at level 20~, and in JRPG terms that isn't very high at all. So, is she being described as strong for her age, strong compared to her peers, or strong in general? Knowing this more definitively would help the reader slot her training efforts into the strength of her enemies more easily.

Otherwise, good job with the story so far, it's earned a watch from me, I want to see where it goes.

Chapter 13
I rang the servant bell of my room while tapping my foot impatiently, "Where the hell is Zath?" I
muttered to myself while staring at the open doors of my quarters, there was nothing on the hallway outside the doors save for an empty space.
Frowning, I looked up and eyed the grandfather clock of my room, then frowned, she should've arrived 30 minutes ago, what the hell was up? My room turned dark as something blocked the natural sunlight that came from the windows, turning back, I saw Fafnir's eyes and smiled, I gave her a wave, "morning, you're already up?"

'Up and ready since the break of dawn,' she replied casually and I briefly imagined her treating flying around Everlast in the early morning as a small stroll, 'I've finished breakfast too actually, what about you?'

I gestured to the tray to my right, the empty plates and empty glasses on top of it could barely be seen under the shadow that my Dragon cast across the room, "yeah, another maid already gave me a light breakfast," my actual breakfast would come later, when everyone else is done eating and the dining table is free for me to use and put as much meat as I could on top of it, "it was pretty good, had my coffee, too. Yours?"

'Something-something, a small house worth of meat.' Fafnir's smirk can be felt from her voice, 'nothing changed for my daily meal really, despite being bonded to Royalty.'

I shrugged, "eh, get used to it, food isn't really a problem but sometimes the people at the kitchen just like to pinch things," and that was actual truth.
As despite all the resources available, the chefs there just liked to cheapen stuff occasionally, and actually, I think the head chef not only tries to personally find people who would sell him foodstuff for cheap but also has a small record of my family's food intake so that he can "guess the amount of food he needed to prepare."

And the worst part is, he's mostly right. Things are kind of getting wasted.

'You guys just let that happen?' I nodded, 'why?'

"The head chef's been working here before I was even born," I replied, remembering all the compliments that all those old guys who visited gave our head chef, and among those compliments is his 'served time' here in the castle.

'What about an ulterior motive?'

"He doesn't have one for doing it I think, the guy's practically glued to the place, I don't think he means harm," I crossed my arms on my chest and eyed the ceiling, "if I remember correctly, the only ulterior motive he has is that the man tries so hard to recommend his daughter to take over once he's retired and honestly? From what I've seen of her, she's pretty good, so I think that's a given."

I gave Fafnir a satisfied grin, "Girl's a good chef and it's not like she's a bad person either, so I'm pretty sure she's gonna be the one feeding us after her father retires," I said, more or less repeating my previous thoughts on the matter, "I even ask her to cook for me and my invited guests at the back of the castle occasionally, girl makes amazing roasted lamb sauce,"

"I'll make sure to give her the compliment sister," Pearl's lithe form walked past the doors before stopping for a second to stare at Fafnir's eye, she blinked, "oh. Hello there. I've heard of you but never met you, you… are telepathic correct?"

Pearl flinched when a deep rumble shook the room- Fafnir's chuckle, 'I am, and nice to meet you,'

"How polite, Neophyte could certainly learn from you." My sister replied with a smile.

I rolled my eyes, "Great, that's great, so uh, why are you here?"

"News." My sister replied, making me quirk an eyebrow, "and its related to your lover."

I didn't have the time or the mood to play around and refuse her calling Zath my lover because my friend's safety was more important than some petty rumor- I narrowed my eyes, "what happened?"

"Now- now, before you do anything rash, I just want you to know that it's nothing bad," she fixed her hair, "in fact, its rather good as it solidifies your marriage with her-" I glared at her and she stopped playing around to tell me the actual situation, "fine, she earned herself a Pledge."

What?

"What?"

'Huh, would you look at that, guess your worries about her being left behind weren't necessary after all!' Fafnir's relief was evident from her tone alone but I on the other hand… felt pretty conflicted about this entire thing-

My body moved on its own as I dodged a butler with a towel wrapped around his arm, I was moving way too fast, I knew that but I didn't want to acknowledge it- mostly because my mind was too pre-occupied with what Pearl had told me.

Seriously what the fuck? Did Zathania really just get a Pledge a week before the school year at Pledge Academy starts?

What the hell?

How the fuck?

Zathania, the character, never had a Pledge in game! She was just a normal NPC who would aid the player with servants- mostly battle maids but those who can cook healing items are possible as well, - right as long as the Player pays for them! This doesn't make any fucking sense!

Well-

I hate to admit it but it also does.

Sort of- this is real life and not a game so the Goddess can really just pick whoever, whenever to give Pledges to but that's not really enough for me-

I think!

Fuck this is too complicated!

"Why is everything so complicated?" I said out loud, words mirroring my thoughts, "I mean, why now? Why- why everything actually? I didn't ask for any of this-"

'You should be happy.' Fafnir pointed out.

"I am." I said with gritted teeth, "but- I don't know, it just feels like everything is falling apart," and it is, isn't it? The Game knowledge that I knew about and the lore that I'm sure the world would follow can actually potentially be derailed? That's- I don't know what to do- so I sighed, "I don't like this,"

'The situation overall is good isn't it? The Hero did die early but someone near you getting a Pledge would mean that they can personally get tutored by you, and we need every fighting force we can get.'

I paused.

… the Hero did die didn't he? That's already a derailment of the plot-

"I'm probably worried about nothing," I murmured to myself and to reassure Fafnir, I'm pretty sure the game's plot is irrelevant at this point because it's all the same in the end isn't it? The Demons are gonna attack and we have to drive them off.

Am I just overcomplicating things?

The answer was a resounding yes. And it was pretty much proven when I used half my strength and pushed past several guards, maids, and butlers with relative ease and entered Zath's quarters without a single care about the group of hands that tried to pull me back- what I saw was not some dangerous variable that'll cost humanity everything and make the demons win, no, instead, what I saw was my friend, lying there and giving me a weak smile.

I smiled back and pushed forward, uncaring of the people trying to grab me, they didn't have the strength to do it and I was honestly too busy to bother with keeping my strength in check so they can shove their policies up their asses.

I entered the room proper and glared at the guards walking behind me, completely unnecessary, in my opinion, for them to be put here but sure, it's fine if they can shut their mouths. Also, they needed to go-

"Leave." I commanded and when I saw a single mouth open to protest my decision I decided to use my authority as their princess because I didn't have time to wait for anyone else's orders- "I order you to leave," and they did, and I'm gonna shoulder the responsibility when things go wrong (if they even could in the first place,) I don't care, my friend is hurting and who are they to stop me from helping her?

When the guards pulled back, I slammed the door shut before facing Zathania, she was bedridden, pale, and looked like she was about to die- telltale signs that someone had been under the presence of The Goddess and received a gift, a Pledge, "Zath. You okay?" Stupid question, of course not, "do you need anything?"

She turned to face me, "mistress," I smiled even as I noticed just how hoarse her voice is, at least she could talk, that's already infinitely better than when Bismuth got his.

The first thing that Zath did is apologize- "I… didn't come this morning because-"

I walked over to her and rubbed her head, "hey, it's fine, it's just one morning, and this is your moment and not mine," I beamed and cupped her cheeks, "I mean, Zath! You just got a Pledge!" I squealed, "that's… I don't know what to say!"

Congratulations is probably a good start right? Nah, actions speak louder than words so as an idea struck me, I grinned and said, "Wait- this is gonna be great-"

I ran around her room and tried to find her closet, it should be… Ah, I opened the doors and stared at the chockful of maid outfits in delight, I presented one to her, "So… as a congratulatory gift for getting a Pledge, how about we reverse our roles and I serve as your maid for the day?"

That didn't sound so bad right? But Zath seems to think the opposite, "mistress, you don't need to do this, you're a princess-"

I basically just went over her refusal and grabbed an outfit before changing out of my nightgown and walking out of her changing wall? Room- the uh… whatever! It's a thin wall- I walked out of the thin wall wearing a maid's outfit and Zathania blinked at first, then she chuckled weakly, before she started to chortle- then she started coughing and I had to run towards her in concern and check if something's wrong.

"Hey, hey, now, calm down alright?" I grinned, trying to reassure her, "you… can rest for the time being. Consider this as your break."

She smiled, "mistress… I do not know how to thank you enough for this,"

"Start by not acting out and hurting yourself-" I started to say before I was cut off.

The door violently slammed open and in came Adamantite with a scowl, he looked around until his gaze landed on me and Zathania before visibly calming down, "can you believe those guys?" He pointed to the guards behind him, "they said that I am not allowed to come in!"

"Well you aren't," I said dryly, "but since you're already here, look!" I gestured excitedly at Zath, "she now has a Pledge!"

Adamantite waved me off, "it's great that your lover has a Pledge Neophyte but father wants to talk to you about your… dragon." He said while staring at the window, probably trying to spot Fafnir.
"He has been putting it off and has thought that he would talk to you about it the day before you leave for the Academy but clearly, The Goddess has saw it fit to bless you multiple times this week and of course, they cannot be merely coincidences." Adamantite sighed in exhaustion, "So he thought that he should take care of one blessing that came your way and then deal with the other one on a later date,"

"Uhuh," I said, "sure, I'll be there in a moment," I bent down and wrapped Zathania's hand around mine, "I just need to take care of my friend first,"

Adamantite nodded, "I'll tell him that you're doing… some sort of bedroom maid play,"

"Go for it," if that was his attempt at making me hurry to leave by getting me flustered, he should already know that I didn't care.

"I'll be seeing you, Neophyte." He started walking out.

"Bye bye!" I waved and watched him leave before facing Zath again, "now, as for you, I'm gonna start serving you now, mistress," I smirked.

Zath averted her eyes as a bit of color returned to her pale cheeks, "thanks,"

I smiled, "you're welcome!" I looked around "now… what the hell do I need to do to serve you?.." I wondered but saw nothing around the room that'll help so you know what? I walked back to the door, opened it and faced the people on the other side, they stared at me and my new outfit like I had grown a second head.

"Princess, you can't wear something like that-" I clicked my tongue and cut the butler off.

"I can." I replied resolutely, "and also, I want someone to bring a tray of food here, as for the food… the more it'll help with Zath's recovery, the better."

When the butler nodded, I left the door open and walked back to my friend's bed to find a chuckling Zath, "what?" I asked, "what?" I repeated, was there something wrong? Why was she giggling? "I literally just walked away for a single second and you're already going insane? Come on, mistress, you can't be this sick."

"No- it's just that… I find it funny that you decided to call another maid to bring me food instead of getting it yourself," her chuckles stopped and I pouted, what was she implying here? "But I guess it's the thought that counts," she cupped my cheeks and gave me an encouraging smile, "Thank you, Neo."

"You're welcome?" I said in confusion, "Also, you don't ask the other maids to bring me food?"

She shook her head, "no," had been the soft reply, "I usually just grab a tray of food from the kitchen as I make my way over to your room,"

"Oh." That makes a lot more sense actually, "I thought you just stand outside the door while waiting for the tray to arrive,"

"And that's the reason why I always open the door to your room while already carrying food?" I nodded and Zath giggled, "That is such a bad guess I don't even know how to react to it," I grinned, "but… I guess that's on par for the course,"

"What are you implying?" I pouted.

"You are a princess after all," she replied vaguely.

And I thought about it and… yeah, I am but only for like, 16 years!

Wait- that's probably long enough for me to get used to this type of life isn't it? Scratch that, it's more than long enough for me to get used to a luxurious life, "Okay, you win that round," I conceded, "but you know what? I don't think I care."

She giggled again, "fair enough,"

The conversation stopped, silence reigned and I placed my head on Zath's bed and she rubbed my hair while we were waiting for the food to arrive, and when it did, I sprung up and Zath's hand moved away from my head, "okay, I guess it's here,"

I walked away from her and back to the door where a middle-aged maid is waiting with a small cart of food, she bowed, "princess," she greeted, "I have brought herbs, meat, soup, and other foodstuff that'll help with your lover's recovery,"

I nodded and grabbed the handle of the cart with a smile, "thank you, but she's not my lover."

"Of course, princess," she bowed and I returned it with a smile. Finally! Someone who actually believed me.

Walking back to Zath with a cart had my friend direct a winning grin my way, which I returned with enthusiasm before preparing a small breakfast in bed for her, "alright, here's the starting dish-" she nodded, "and everything else can come later so for now-"

I started feeding her personally and she eagerly played along, it felt like I was a kid playing dollhouse and Zath just went along with it but hey, if it helps- which I think it does, Zath is starting to look lively now, her cheeks becoming redder with each spoon that I give her. - then it doesn't hurt to continue doing it.

None of this really helped me with removing the thoughts of Zath's Pledge out of my head though and I knew that later- when Zath has recovered - would be an interesting time because it would be time to test out my maid's newly gotten weapon.

Okay please add the insane protagonist tag. Even someone who is asexual would get how this sounds and the protagonist is not a small girl who does not know better.

Okay, okay, I'm guilty, this does sound a bit too flirty but- I have my reasons, back when Neophyte danced with a disguised Zathania, she thought that the entire thing is just for fun, she was joking around and this situation is the like that.

Thanks for checking it out!

Yeah, honestly when I was making her character, I found it pretty hard to give her a motivation that fits the personality that I gave her and I saw one of the characters at the time and I thought, "huh, why don't you just die?"

Neophyte won't take the hero's place, there are two different "heroes" in Everlast that the Player can pick and they're basically genderbased, the male one is dead which leaves the female one, and she's currently playing in Hardmode.

The maid one... yeah, there are a lot of those in Yuri right now, maids are getting very popular in Yuri mangas back when I was writing this and since I was also a big fan of overlord I thought to add someone like Zathania but I didn't want her to be perfect- since again, Overlord inspired, - and I kinda wanted her to be selfish and manipulative, the "shadow" to Neophyte's "light" so to say, and that's how she got the "Schema" part of her name.

Setting wise: I don't want to reveal too much, I hate infodumps, and to me, writing one is like making a school presentation and I don't really find doing those fun, I'll give exposition bit by bit but for your questions, Everlast is basically at the center of all the human Kingdoms, and they're the most advanced city in this world so they're responsible for supporting every single Kingdom out there, both allies and enemies.

As for them not sending their own people to front lines, they do- that's what Pledge Academy is for, - including their own Royalty.

The people's opinion when it comes to Neophyte is kind of complicated but honestly, she's redeemed herself in their eyes and everyone is thinking that they still have a chance to survive until another hero pops up. Or the current one grows.

Demons are evil. They want to wipe out life. That's the only thing that really needs to be known about them, their the "apathetic" antagonists because the more complex/gray ones would be other humans.

Thanks for the critique, I'll take note.

Neophyte's arrogance comes from denial of her situation, and I think the biggest scenes where she shows her "arrogance" is during the ball and well, they are insulting her and there's also her not wanting to marry "kids"

The lack of Description is intentional, both for the King and Zathania.

And for Neophyte's power, she's basically very OP at the moment, with the only things that can threaten her being the Demons near the current Demon Lord and a few special Pledge Bearers/ past Hero Party members.

Again you can't get away with this unless the protagonist is not a SI and or an idiot. Even an ignorant child, after hearing the whole "She is your lover thing" so much would fit it weird.

And now you lost my interest because it makes the MC grinding and suffering pointless.

There aren't any spoilers in my post, just explanations on why I did things, and the only thing close to spoilers is the last paragraph and even then, I didn't name drop anyone important.

Neophyte is consistent, she considers her maid a friend, and has joked around with her multiple times, and the whole "breaking character" on her part is because her maid couldn't work as a maid for the time being so she decides to be the maid for today, mostly as a joke, but even if she didn't wear a maid's outfit, she would've taken care of her friend regardless because she's sick. The only difference here is that she decided to cosplay as a maid.

Neophyte still hasn't had her journey though? Her training is mostly backstory.

Ehem considering that you have the MC suffer a lot due to the Hero's death and how she seemed to be headed to getting the "Hero power ups" yeah kind of a huge spoiler that changes the whole story.
