Most vs debates ask who would win. I pose a slightly different scenario.

In one corner is the God Emperor of All Mankind, in the other, a standard Space Marine per the 41st millenium- we'll just say an Ultramarine in specific in case that affects anyone's assessments, standard Tactical Marine kit.

Obviously the God Emperor wins. But after he kills that Marine, two more identical copies appear, and when he kills those, four copies of the original marine, doubling on and on until the God Emperor inevitably falls.

How many waves of this does he survive? (and accordingly how many dead marines did it take)

Well since regular Space Marines are specified, they are probably loyalist. And despite being nominally atheist as opposed to the Imperium's 40k fanaticism, they still probably provide a bit of power to the Emperor.

Therefore the Emperor becomes infinitely powerful.

The specific scenario I had in mind is in short the Emperor as of the Great Crusade, before his mortal wounding, which in retrospect I should have actually specified.
Then I say about two planets of Space Marines and no they don't throw the planets at him.

One of them should get lucky and injure him, then they just have to keep hurting him until he dies

If one buys into the Horus Heresy novel series, the Emperor once forced an entire legion - 100,000 space marines - to kneel, and then kept them frozen in place even while he was occupied by dressing down Lorgar. To the best of my memory it's not clear if it was done by telekinesis or telepathic control but either way the answer is going to be many, many space marines.

Measured by surface area or volume?
I didn't consider that, but if we are going into details then we should also consider that any world with Space marines living on it is inhabited on the surface and underneath it.

But let's keep it simple and just say the surface.

Even if we assume the Emperor isn't outright gaining power from the Marines, it's hard to see any number short of a blackhole stopping him.

He's hilariously power dense to the point I wouldn't be surprised if he could just TK himself out of a star of mass.

One particularly strong Ork could push the Variably Sized E so it hardly seems plausible that he could beat an indefinite number of Space Marines.
