The Evolution of YA: Young Adult Fiction

Interesting video, about a change i've noticed but have never been able to articulate in YA novels. I especially like the beginning where it points out that book reading is increasing rather decreasing, as popular believed by many parents. The idea that the internet/phones would somehow turn us into a generation of mindless zombies only able to type in text-speak has been proven rather false. The pendulum between fantasy novels to realistic novels with brief intermissions of fad's is a pattern I find quite interesting

This XKCD about sums it up.

Phones and the internet have gotten people more used to using reading and writing on a casual basis.

Having more books for those age demographics rather than expecting kids to read 'the classics' (often what old academics liked and not really that accessible for students) has certainly helped.
