The Election of 1796

So lately I've been swept up in the musical Hamilton (or at least its soundtrack) and it's lead to one historical question that's come to bother me.

Why was it John Adams who ran in 1796, while Alexander Hamilton stayed on the side? From what little I've read, Hamilton had greater clout in the Federalists - which is notably referred to as his party - than Adams. He was eligible, charismatic, had experience in government, was not yet wracked by scandal, and certainly disliked the other candidates. To my eye, he had reason enough to try and a decent chance at winning.

So why didn't he run? Building off that, had he run, what would have been the likely results and their consequences?
