The Dragon Ascendant: NO SV: Welcome To Another Viserys Targaryen Quest (A Ck2 Quest)

The thing with them is that we already have plans to get the Queensguard going, which would be an All Female corps to protect the Queen, and these two are perfect candidates for that.

He kind of hates us for causing the death of his lover Renly, not a great thing if you want a loyal Bodyguard.

And I think you should add the Blackfish, everyone loves the Blackfish
Isn't it your plan to get the Queensguard? Like as far as I can tell the Kingsguard is used to bodyguard the queen. And a queensguard could be controversial, or perhaps no big deal? I don't know the politics of the situatuion.

Point on Loras hating us, but on paper he's a prime candidate, and things are kind of delicate with Mace Tyrell on office. Throw the dog a bone now so we can avoid him going after something once his mother dies. Or at least control him once his mother dies. Ignoring all politics is okay I guess. But doing so can hurt.

Blackfish has a known DC, and I already surpassed the 4 recs number. I feel like I should leave some out.

I meant it will probably be controversial, but it has clear benefits, among them giving a release for those ladies in Westeros who doesn´t fit in the social norms and which have martian inclinations... But this is mostly because I want to put together such great characters as Asha, Beshka, Brienne, Arya, and so long and so forth...

[X] Plan: Magnificent Nine
-[X] Harras Harlaw is one of those true rarities: an Ironborn knight, albeit one who keeps to the Drowned God. His appointment would forge closer ties with the Islands while only being somewhat controversial.

-[X] Brynden Tully is an able commander, a sharp wit, and a valourous knight. He is also in his fifties, and his brother the Lord Paramount still hopes to see him married off. However, Hoster Tully is not like Tywin Lannister and would accept the honor of having a relative on the Kingsguard without much fuss. (Requires a DC of 60)

-[X] Jon Connington was stripped of his lands and titles during the Rebellion, and has spent the last several years helping to raise your nephew. He wouldn't mind being restored to his lands and title (as his cousin Ronnet is, in his words, "a snivelling little shit") but he would also be pleased and proud to remain in King's Landing and serve your family once more.

-[X] Asher Forrester showed promise when he marched south with his father and brother, and you have noticed in the past few days he has struck up an odd rapport with Beshka. House Forrester is not among the greater families of the North, but the gesture would be noticed. When pressed, Lord Forrester mentioned there might be an impolitic lover waiting for him back in the North, and placing Asher here would do him (and Lord Stark) a favour.

-[X] Imry Florent is a young goodbrother of Lord Stannis, a proud knight and respectable warrior, and possessed of the least prominent ears on a Florent you've ever seen. His appointment would be seen as a gesture of goodfaith to the Reacher lords that stood with you, and to Lord Stannis, who does not speak ill of Ser Imry.

-[X] Robar Royce is the second son of Bronze Yohn Royce, a good tourney warrior and a skilled swordsman who did not have a chance to fight in the Restoration. Quiet but kind, his demeanour is a stark difference from his rough-hewn appearance and familial reputation. His appointment would be seen as a conciliatory gesture to the Vale.

Ok, I have changed my mind... We have just melted down the Iron Throne...Compared with that having an expanded Kingsguard seems like an afterthought at worst...

Harras Harlaw, Robar Royce, Asher Forrester, and Imry Florent are all skilled fighters, loyal, and they give us political benefits with the rest of the Realm, so why not pick them all? And with Asher, we have the added benefit of seeing his glorious chemistry with Beshka

Jon Connington and Brynden Tully, are both loyal, experienced, and pretty awesome characters on their own, especially the Blackfish, whom I would love to have around King´s Landing, and to be able to be a more active part of the quest.

And now the ones I rejected it

- I really love both Beshka and Brienne, I really do the only reason why I did not include them on the rooster of the Kingsguard is that I want to include them on the Queenguard which we would unlock next turn

- I consider Jorah Mormont a fine candidate, but from the North we already have Asher Forrester, which seems way funnier to hand around with.

- Jon Snow, like when he joined the Night Watch, he is too young to make a decision that will affect his life forever, and OOC he is our Nephew and we will soon discover it (Rhaegar Ghost told us to Talk with Ned about what happened in the Tower of Joy in the previous quest)

- And finally, Loras Tyrell... He literally hates us for causing the death of Renly which is a pretty bad thing for a bodyguard, and since the Tyrells are already on the Small Council, I don´t think that they need to be thrown any more bones.

@Magoose just to be sure, does Jaime has officially rejoined the White Cloaks?

Because IIRC the tradition is to have 7 knights in the Kingsguard and we already have 4 (Jaime, Barrister, Mandon, and Arys) then we will need 3 guys to complete the traditional rooster, not 4

Besides that, the fact that we have already broken the Holy/Lucky 7 in the small council is going to make expanding the number of knights on the Kingsguard more or less scandalous?

Well, I think we need some more votes here...

-[X] Beshka the Basilisk would be … a choice. A woman, of foreign birth, with no knighthood or ties to the Faith, and one of the youngest ever recruited. She's willing to take on just about any challenge you pitch at her, though. And the Faith can only get so mad at their new king, right? More than Destroying the Iron Throne could… right?
-[X] Jon Connington was stripped of his lands and titles during the Rebellion, and has spent the last several years helping to raise your nephew. -[X] Loras Tyrell is quite young, and depending on when he arrived to take his oaths would beat out Ser Jaime's record as the youngest recruited. He is known as being gifted with swords (this is occasionally said with knowing smirks, which you don't get) and has had a haunted look ever since he surrendered to your forces at Storm's End. Lord Mace recommended him personally, and every time you ask for more time, there is a glint in his eyes that makes you feel concerned.
-[X] Brienne of Tarth is a staggeringly tall young woman, and looks like she could beat up Ser Jaime at just seventeen. Her father once hoped that you might consider marrying her, and now seems to hope you might consider trusting her with your life. The former was, frankly, out of the question. The latter, though … you've seen her move with a sword, and it suggests real skill. Still, she's a woman, and unknighted, and the Faith (and some traditionalists) may get grouchy. The question is, how much you actually care.

Come on guys!!! The sooner @Magoose can close this vote the sooner we will find out what the hell we unleashed after meeting the Wordl's most uncomfortable chair...

So, Question.

Did we definitely fuck up royal by destroying the Iron Throne, or may things potentially have been even worse if we had kept it?
Yes and no.

Around Westeros, you destroying the throne has been felt by the magically gifts and not magically gifted alike and many of those people (who just so happen to be many of the viewpoints in ASOIAF) are feeling that something feels off.

Good news: Most of those people are loyal, helpful and will learn on their own. And most likely won't be falling to the sway of evil, corruption and ending the world.

Bad news: almost all of those potential magical heroes are kids. Not martially inclined, or are on the path to the dark side.

As for the Yes:

You've weakened the magical barriers of the world where bad things can happen.

Meaning that a particularly determined group of mad men can end the world. Or at the very least threaten it.

And not really even the end of the world, but a lot of people want to end Westeros… at least a unified Westeros.
I trust your judgment and imagination to find new and exciting ways of killing us...

So I accept whatever you throw at us
Well some of them I think are creative…

For me of course.

Now I am really curious about what would have been our doom if we had kept the throne...

[X] Plan: Magnificent Nine

Someone mentionated a Queensguard, and I think that's a better possibility than integrating women into the Kingsguard.

Like in practical terms, you can have 7 men dedicated to protect the King, 7 women dedicated to protect the Queen. For a total of 14 warriors that can protect the entire Royal Family.

And let's be honest, it's going to be simpler to create a dedicated Sisterhood than mixing men with women within the setting.

Let's just say that the throne pushes the personality of its sitter to the extreme.

Think for example: Viserys protective nature for his family and his wish to grow it in a modest amount of time. A very normal thing to have.

With the Throne?

He might take several mistresses and concubines to give him more kids and maybe put his kids through training from hell to make sure they stay alive.

Things like that.

Well, that settles it. It was the right decision after all.

Dealing with an impending Apocalypse is infinitely preferable to dealing with THAT fresh nonsense.

Dammit, now I wonder which screwed up more the Targaryen Dynasty, the rampant incest between siblings or the Iron Throne...

And also how some Targaryen monarchs (like Jaehaerys I, Daeron II, Aegon V, Viserys II, and Viserys I) who managed to avoid the worst effect of the Throne and be really great kings and pretty decent people during his reign

On the other hand, Viserys could have become David Xanatos.

Both were equal, and both were not.

Lets just say Willpower is a thing that would be needed.

So a quick question.

Rumor mill now, or after the omakes and interludes?

Interlude: A Promise Kept
Interlude: A Promise Kept

Dragonstone was not as you remembered it, in either your dreams or in your fading memories, which drifted from clear to foggy with each passing day. There was nothing about the place you once called a home in which you remembered.

The many small villages of the island were gone, reduced, not only to ashes but consolidated after the great war and genocide that Robert attempted to commit on the island and its inhabitants. The Westerosi Valyrians as some of the more patriotic and protective of those survivors who had taken the island with Aegon and Stannis called themselves had rebuilt a central village near the port, rebuilding the town that had once been the heart of commerce of the island, now called Dragonport, because of course it was. It had another name, a long time ago, in the old tongue of Valyria, but you did not know it. No one did.

But from the air, as you soured above the island on the Dragon, your Dragon, Ebron, you felt the weight of your past slowly bring you down. To the ground and to the place that held one of the worst memories of your life.

It took less than a heartbeat for Erbion to understand what you wanted, as he began to glide, first past the Dragonmount, where the smell of sulfur and smoke mixed with the sea air, and you found yourself invigorated by the smell.

Small wonder that Aegon the first loved to fly above the Mountian, and remain here on Dragonstone.

But your thoughts ended as you stopped and Ebrion landed on the mount near the castle, lowering his head to allow you to safely get off his back, the satchel on your side waving around in the wind, as your eyes wandered, first to the Keep then to the ground you were soon to be walking on. You clambered down from his wing, instead of by his neck as you realized who was waiting for you at the castle's entrance. The Black Dragon glass was smooth, almost like Glass, and you could see your reflection The Maester of the Castle, Cressan.

He was a greying man, one of a great deal of age and wisdom, but he was also a fit one, having no hunch or bend in his back, as well as standing tall to greet you when others would have bowed their heads.

"Your Grace," He bowed his head as you approched, making you confused for a brief moment before the old man gazed at the great beast that began to fly away. "As if I need more proof to be fearful of the Gods Wrath." He stated as he took a breath.

"He's friendly, as long as he's fed, and he's allowed to fly wherever he wants." You replied. You hadn't heard any reports of any incidents involving any of the dragons. So you were happy with that.

"I must ask Maester. Did Lord Stannis care for-" You started but the Maester stopped, placing a hand on your shoulder.

"He did. He saw fit to protect her body from the looters and the traitors. He laid her to rest in the Crypts." He replied.

A moment passed, as you realized you needed to get Lord Stannis something for that kindness. It must have caused him no small part of anger when news reached Robert, who must have raged that her body was treated with respect. When so many other members of your family did not seem to get the same treatment.

You paused to remember the fate of the bodies of Rhaenys and the boy whom for many years you thought was Aegon. Their bodies, what little left, were tossed into the Blackwater bay to feed the fish, and to be forgotten about by the order of Robert.

Rhaenys body was found by Prince Oberyn, when it washed ashore on the Blackwater Rush when he retrieved the body of his sister. Her cat Balerion had been standing by the body, protecting it from the animals and the carrion that had sought to eat her. You learned from the Red Viper that he felt as if he died that day before he found his daughters, and in the end, found you and Dany.

You walked past the door. "I'll find her myself."

"My King, you-" Cressan protested.

"I know this castle Maester." You whispered. "Let me find it."

You were going to hear the protests, but you decided to descend into the Castle alone. You needed this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You had found her tomb at sunset.

You had not gotten lost, at least not without purpose. You had walked past numerous members of the family that were interred here in the Crypts of Dragonstone. Aemon the Dragon Knight, Baelor Breakspear. Even the ashes of the Aegon the Vth were interred here, instead of being left at Summerhall, with the rest of those who had died there.

Legends in their own right, but none of them were important. Not to you, not to anyone else alive, save historians.

But here, at this small place before, near the heart of the Volcano, whose heat you could feel from the walls and the floor, you stood before your mother.

You wanted to be alone here. With the dead and the gone. To allow yourself to cry.

"Viserys." A voice spoke, and your eyes immediately jumped out of your skull, as you stood up, preparing to defend yourself!

"Who goes there?!" You screamed, and your voice echoed through the crypts as the sound dissipated.

Your heart thumped and you thought you were alone.

It seems mother had another idea. She was standing before you, looking the same as your memories. She was wearing a red dress, clean and warm. Her silver hair was ashen and white, with braids on the back, going down a little way. Her crown, the most defining feature of her memory, was missing.

"Mother." You sounded like a child again, for a brief moment before falling to your knees, the tears leaking from your eyes as you couldn't bear to stand, looking at her. "I- I'm sorry"

"Shh… Hush my little dragon." Her voice was a soothing whisper as she knelt down next to you. "There is nothing you need to be sorry about. Nothing at all."

"Your dead." You sobbed. "You-" You didn't want to believe that she was here. The weight on your chest felt impossible to carry.

"You think that just because I was gone, doesn't mean i wasn't with you?" She asked.

"I wasn't… strong enough." You said. "If I was-"

"You were strong enough Viserys. You were always strong enough. Even without me." She said as her finger lifted up your chin to face you. "You had the strength to move on. To keep moving forward when others would have given up. Even your brother, even your sister." She said.

"That-"

"It may be hard to see, but it is true. You made your choices. You made them, and remained alive, and prospered." Finally, the words you had waited nearly 15 years finally left her mouth. "I'm proud of you Viserys." She whispered.

She was dead. Your mother was dead and had been dead for years. She was a ghost, a spirit, some mad figment of your imagination that has taken form.

But her cold embrace, even as a shadow, was exactly the same as you remembered, even after all these years alone. Warm, comforting, and beautiful.

And you set her crown down. You were alone.

But also not.

You would never be alone again.

"Remember my little Dragon. I will always be with you."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reward: Your Mothers spirit is finally at rest. Your Heart is filled with determination.

+5 to Willpower.

Ok, that was truly heartwarming... I am glad that Viserys will have some measure of closure and happiness.

Before he discover that he has unleashed the Apocalypse...

And those are pretty awesome rewards...

It is a shame that Dany wasn't there with us, it would have been nice to have her meet his mother...
