The Diary [HP]

At this point in time, without knowing about his family, wouldn't Tom think (or, at least, wouldn't other people think) that he was a muggleborn? I mean, he was found in a muggle orphanage, and his mother didn't seem to be a wizard, and if you looked up his father, you would find that he was a muggle.

He is a parselgougue and Marvolo is a wizarding name. For that matter I would not be surprised if the Gaunts and Marvolo specifically are mentioned in wizarding genealogies. They were the last of the line of Slytherin however degenerate.

Oh, you mean someone being so over the top evil that everyone else, even mortal enemies, gang up to stomp someone into nothing?

Nah, totally not applicable to Moldywart. He's so cuddly.
More like:

"Know the Players, Know the Game.

Revolutionary is another name for Target.

Good Allies are a Blessing; Bad Ones get your Ass Killed.

Expansion should be followed by Consolidation.

Rapid Expansion tends to be unsustainable.

420 Miles. Campaigns go no further. No Exceptions.

Air Superiority is not a suggestion."

Stuff like that

Psh. Like Moldywart is capable of learning. Especially from people he considers inferior, i.e., everyone, ever.

I speak the language of the snakes and have discovered my birthright; Salazar's chamber and the basilisk that dwells within it. All in Slytherin know not to be fooled by the muggle surname I was burdened with.
But, Slytherin didn't know that he opened the Chamber, and likely not about parseltougue. Riddle is a muggle name, at the very least, his half blood statues should be obvious.

Running a bit low on votes, so I'll keep it open for another couple of hours. Current tally has Plan Lord Voldemort beating Plan Modified DragonParadox by 3.

[X] Plan Lord Voldemort

As for the whole Horcrux thing, since the Diary was his first, it SHOULD be more intact of the lot of them, since it contains the first chunks he cut off.

Vaguely wondering if doing a soul swap could be feasible, integrate a bit of another soul, jam some of ours into them...

Either way, becoming corporeal in his old body is a terrible idea -- wizards have a long enough lifespan that people who knew him at that age are almost certainly still alive. So even if the Diary had succeeded in canon, he'd have to be in hiding, with an incomplete Hogwarts education, another person's wand, and no usable contacts in the wizarding world.

Seriously, canon Voldemort was a fucking moron.

[x] Appeal to her sympathy.

You leave the silence undisturbed for several long moments, beating back the emotions that threatened to break your cool facade. No...no, there is no need to panic. This is merely a setback. A setback that you can easily work through. After all, you successfully manipulated some of the most intelligent wizards in the world, including the Hogwarts faculty. Convincing one little girl is (literal) child's play.

So you consider: what could you say to Ginny to make the thought of returning you unbearable?

Your first instinct is blackmail -- in Slytherin, everyone had a secret to hide, so this was your go-to method of control when you were a person. But this girl has nothing for you to hold over her head. You'd be surprised if she'd done anything more scandalous than stealing from the cookie jar once in her eleven short years. Besides, as much as you hate to admit it, she is the one with the power in this situation. If she were to grow tired of you, she would only have to shut you and put you away. This will not always be the case, of course. Once you've captured her mind, she'll scarcely be able to breathe without your say so. For now, though, you must work within the confines of circumstance.

So a bribe?

Also not ideal. As much knowledge as you hold -- and it is a great, great deal -- Ginny does not strike you as the type to hunger for such things. Not enough curiosity to learn for learning's sake, and not enough ruthless drive to seek training in the Dark Arts. A truly run-of-the-mill Gryffindor, if you've ever seen one, content to take the world at face value. Though she may appreciate an offer of help with her classes, opening with the promise of arcane secrets would not immediately outweigh her guilt.

What to do, what to do.

It's been at least a minute or two since you last said anything, and Ginny's noticed, her anxiety increasing steadily as your pages remain blank.

Tom? Are...Are you still there, Tom?

You say nothing. Her nerves can stand to get a bit worse over this decision. Punishment, for threatening to abandon you so soon.

Please don't be angry. Or sad. It's nothing you did. I promise. I really, really promise. I'd keep you in a heartbeat if I could, but -- I just can't, Tom. It wouldn't be right.

More silence. More guilt. You drink it in like a fine wine -- the poor girl's about to burst.

Say something, Tom. Please, please say something.

At long last, you do.

"Ginny...I am...not angry," you lie, playing up the pauses between your words more than necessary. She would so love to care for a weak thing, you could sense that instinct even if you didn't peer into her mind. "I only thought...that we might be...friends. I see...now...that I was wrong."

Distressed guilt displaces her anxiety, and you can almost feel the way her heart leaps into her throat. Her next words come so quickly you can barely read them before they disappear into you.

But -- Tom -- I am your friend! You have to believe me. I wouldn't have said all that stuff last night if I didn't like you or want to be your friend!

"Then why...do you...abandon me?" you say. "Am I...not good enough? Are my pages...too...musty? My spine...too frayed?" You're actually a bit sorry the girl can't hear your excellent acting, because you are giving quite the performance. "I understand. No one could...ever...want a friend...as abused as I."

No. No no no no, Tom, don't ever say that. Of course you're good enough. You're the best diary I've ever had -- the best diary in the world. I'm sure. She pauses as she finally wraps her minuscule brain around your final sentence. Tom, were you...was your...I mean, who...

Bending over backwards to be conscientious. You'd expect nothing less.

"My last owner...did not...consider me a friend," you reply, if only to stop her written stumbling. "He locked me...away. Starved me...of light. Of company. For countless years, I have been...imprisoned. In darkness." The beginnings of her reply start to scratch themselves in above you, but you cut her off, as if you don't notice.

"For a fleeting moment...with you...I thought...but I suppose it was not...to be."

I...Tom, I had no idea. That's so horrible.

There it is: a weakness in her resolve. You switch your tactic from histrionic acceptance to heartfelt pleading. If she's half the bleeding heart you know she is, she won't be able to resist.

"Ginny. You are...a good girl. A kind girl. The first kindness...I have known...in years. I beg you," you say. "Spare a fraction of that kindness...and do not return me. Let me...be your friend."

The wavering has doubled in intensity now, her conscience going around in circles.

I want to keep you. So badly. And I could never give you back to someone so awful as Lucius Malfoy,

(You note that name as the idiot who's kept you locked away for so long.)

But the truth is, Tom...oh, please say you won't think I'm terrible for this.

'OUT with it, girl,' you think. Must she beat around the bush so?

"It is surely...not as bad...as you think," you say. "Terrible people...would not be so good...to a lowly diary."

For some reason, that seems to console her enough to actually tell you this guilt-ridden secret of hers. Though her hand still quivers for a moment above the page, a few useless drops of ink polluting you.

I didn't pay for you, Tom. Mum doesn't know I have you. No one in my family does. The truth is...you don't belong to me. Not really.

Ah, so little Ginny has some sticky fingers? Perhaps she's not the saint you thought--

Malfoy -- Lucius Malfoy, that is -- he made a nasty comment about my family being poor and threw some awful secondhand textbook in my cauldron when we were at Flourish and Blotts. Mum didn't want to accept it, but it was a few galleons we wouldn't have to spend, so... She trails off. When I opened it up at home, you fell out. The spine's so broken, you fit right in. He probably didn't even know you were in there.

That's...that's really it? All the self-flagellation, all the anxiety, because you fell out of another book that was expressly given to her?

You feel another diary headache coming on.

"My dear...Ginny," you eventually respond, carefully metering your words so no hint of irritation escapes. "Your honesty...is admirable. But you are being...far too hard...on yourself. I am...a gift. I belong now...to you."

But Malfoy--

"Clearly didn't care enough...to notice...my absence," you finish. "Tell me. What is...the year?"

1992.

(FIFTY YEARS? You've been wasting away, consigned to darkness and impotence, for FIFTY -- no. Calm. Now is not the time.)

"The last time...someone wrote in me...was in 1943, Ginny."

Wow!! I knew you were old, Tom, but not THAT old! That's -- oh, I'm being insensitive. Sorry.

"Quite...alright," you lie through gritted teeth. "So, you see...I will not be missed."

You've almost convinced her. Her desire to keep you is palpable, tinged with cloying sympathy and a selfish excitement at having own special friend. Confident in your abilities, you play your final card.

"Take me to Hogwarts. Let us experience an adventure...as friends. I know...much...of the school. Of magic. I could...teach you...before we go."

That does it. All signs of hesitation evaporate, disappearing as though they never once existed.

Really?! A diary can teach me magic?

"I can try. I know...many spells."

Ginny mulls this over, almost conspiratorially, in her head, then puts quill back to paper.

Ok. As long as you really want me to keep you, Tom.

"More than anything, Ginny."

As long as you don't think I'm doing anything wrong.

"Not in the slightest."

It's -- very strange, but I'm a bit excited to have a secret diary. I've never had a real secret before.

"You must be certain...that I remain...a secret. Your brothers would...surely...vandalize me. If they are as cruel as you say."

You feel her newfound cheer dim just a bit.

Aw, they aren't cruel. Just...stupid boys. That's it. But they probably WOULD do something funny to you if they knew you were my diary, so I'll just put you under my pillow for the rest of the day. I won't be able to talk much more. It's chore day...I have to help clean out the garbage. The Muggle way. Ugh.

A touch infuriating that you had to waste all your valuable time today convincing her that she didn't commit some mortal sin, but you got some strength from Ginny's volatile emotions, so it wasn't a total loss. You leave your anger at a low simmer.

"Write again soon. I would like to hear...about your life."

I'll come back as soon as I can. Promise. Have a good day, Tom -- because I'm not going to. ):

Your cover falls shut, and you feel yourself slid into a narrow, feathery nook.

Since you have nothing else to do while Ginny does her Muggle chores, you contemplate how you are to proceed. Little Ginny is to be your best advocate and first apostle of your shadowy cabal at Hogwarts -- you have little other choice in the matter. But, as she is now, she does not suit your needs at all. She is naive, weak-willed, blinded by her feelings, and (you suspect) hardly able to cast a simple charm, let alone the spells you may require. There are ways around this, of course; those methods also come with a substantial trade-off. How do you wish to use Ginny in your plans?

[ ] It's obvious Ginny cannot be what you need. As soon as possible, you will put her under mind control, and she will be nothing more than your puppet. She will be capable of far more powerful magic and act as a perfect extension of your will. People will likely notice her change in behavior, however, and you will gain no additional strength from her because she will have no emotion of her own.

[ ] Followers are most useful when they follow of their own volition. You will scale back the mind controlling influence of your powers and encourage the darker aspects of her personality through manipulation alone. If you succeed, you will have a loyal disciple, but there is no guarantee that the girl will fall. Your time may be wasted.

[ ] The best approach is clearly in the middle. Through getting to know Ginny, you will tempt her over to your side, through false friendship and trickery. She will regard you as her truest companion -- and all the while, you will siphon off her emotions, pouring your own influence in their place. You will put her in trance when necessary, and when you are strong enough, you will be able to fully possess her. The highest rewards have the highest risk, however, and she will likely notice her bouts of amnesia and her increasing weakness. You may also overdrain her and kill her without meaning to.

We've waited 50 years. We can take it subtle.

We are currently very weak.

We also have way way too many enemies what we need to do is lay low and slowly regain our strength.

Ginny acting odd will alert her family and our enemies, so lets take the slow path and when were strong an whole and have a body get the hell out of dodge.

Seriously england is wet cold and has terrible food, lets not risk our lives to take that over.

-[X] Of course, she won't notice any amnesia if you don't take over. You will increase your influence, but only up to a point. You don't want her being too weak to be useful, after all. You will be able to possess her if nessacary, but only as a last resort. People will likely notice her change in behaviour, after all, and you don't want to risk accidentally killing her.
--[X] At the same time, you can work on making her a loyal disciple. Manipulation alone is all well and good, but you prefer to hedge your bets. In this way, you will cultivate both a potential servant and body, and will be able to use her in anyway necessary.

Once more, we are Tom Riddle, we do NOT limit ourselves. We can be both subtle and currupting, preparing her to be a body or servant, as long as we take the proper precautions.
