Yeah, those are.... not good reasons.

This thread isn't about what you like. It's about the best damn fics you've ever read.

Summarizing the plot isn't useful. Saying why it's great other than "I liked it" is.

Hazredous interruptions:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11755899/1/Hazredous-Interruptions
It's not -marked- as complete, but the last chapter was epilogue 2, so it's either finished or as close as to make no relevant difference.
Great mixup between RWBY and Nanoha exploiting the backdrops of both universes to build a background story that is a piece of art just by itself.
Derec, but for the additional reasons the author's conduct in the SB thread was offensively bad. Both EleventhMessenger and Golden Lark (co-writer/reviewer?) are assholes who have paper-thin skin who can't take constructive criticism.

As in, after several pages of multiple people trying to explain at length of why they found the last chapters so poor and those two literally couldn't accept these where valid view points and flew off into rages over it.

I'm going to go ahead and recommend Hammerhand, and its sequel, Angels of the Storm.
Hammerhand / Fan Fic - TV Tropes
The premise is that Shepard dies again, and is replaced by a squad of Space Marines pulled through the warp. The grammar's choppy in some places, but it's otherwise the best Warhammer/Mass Effect crossover I've ever read, with a strong plot and believable characters.

I... don't know how I feel about this as a reason.

Author behaviour shouldn't impact the story at all. If they're an asshole but they write well, they still write well.

I feel like it's situationally legitimate - all authors have biases and opinions, but they should only serve as grounds for a derec if those biases and opinions affect the quality of their work.

Example:
  • Tolkien was a devout christian, and that is present in his legendarium in the form of Eru Iluvatar being "God", but he still divorced Christianity from his work enough that his bias didn't really affect anything - if you didn't know about the Eru thing, it could be like any other fictional pantheon, and you could ignore it if you did know.
    • The author's biases and behavior, in this case, would not be grounds for a derec. The stories are generally intended to be independent of the author's biases, so they don't really factor into the quality of their literature.
  • Tom Kratman is a vicious bigot, and that is present in his stories. He has even done inserts of RL individuals into his works so that he could insult and abuse them via literature.
    • The author's biases and behavior, in this case, are absolutely grounds for a derec. Their stories are as much vehicles for expressing the author's biases as they are independent works, so those biases are directly relevant to the quality of their work.
In the case of the actual derec in this thread, I think that being unable to accept criticism and a general shitty attitude might burn specific person(s) on authors' works, but shouldn't be grounds for dismissal on their own. If those author(s) went ahead and pulled a Perfect Lionheart, calling out or actively emphasizing the topic(s) of those criticisms or critics in-story, then it would become grounds for dismissal.

Edit: Added a couple sentences to provide better clarity.

In this case, the authors appeared to listen to some criticism and then after that blowup decided fuck it, the last chapter with all its numerous flaws won't be fixed after all and just went ahead with the epilogues. You can still see the "not the final product" notice on that chapter on ff.net.
So, yeah. Author behavior negatively affected the quality of the fic, I can totally see the reasoning there.
There's also that the story fails miserably at the goal the author stated during the debacle, which is to show a clash of settings instead of focusing on individuals.

Well then in that case, the derec holds up pretty soundly.

But not fixing is different from bad.

I haven't read the story or the thread, so I really can't comment, but just... not taking criticism is different from actively working being terrible. It might be terrible, but they're two separate things.

The thing about Kratman is that his works are, on their own and independent of his biases, really terrible. His biases make it worse, but this is the guy who writes books about how the SS really wasn't so bad and relates tanks killing things to sex.

Plus, his prose is pretty awful.

Jaune beats all the first years.
Or in other words how Jaune made his foes choose between defeat or humiliation.

Well that sounds awful.

Read through to the second chapter.

Moronic drivel with poor characterisation, no understanding of how fighting work in what purports to be a fighting fic.

Like, he holds Yang's hair hostage, which is exactly as stupid as it sounds, and somehow fails to mention or notice that the girl who smashes through walls with her fists is almost certainly strong enough to smash a fucking buzzer.

If you're going to write a fic about someone being "clever" then make sure it is actually clever. As it is, it is stupid.

I think it goes without saying by this point, but derec.

Edit:
I read more, getting through the Blake and Ruby bits. The fic does not improve.

If I had the capability to nuke the servers this fic was contained in from orbit, there would be a crater.

Decrecced.

Well yes, but nobody's contesting the abortive wretchedness of his works. I was just focusing on how his opinions and behavior as a person directly drags the quality of his works [even further] down.

Going to toss Madoka Magica fic Fargo by Bavitz out there.

Basically it starts out being about a girl named Sloan Redfern from the American midwest, living in squalor in North Dakota, until she receives a certain proposal by Kyubey that leads to her joining up with a ragtag group of 3 other magical girls to fight a wraith infestation. And things... escalate from there.

The story really is great. It has a colossal cast but the author manages to make all the characters feel real and distinct from one another- you could give me a rough description of a character and I would be able to tell who they were almost immediately, dollars to donuts. The author's writing is incredibly stylistic (at one more slipping into script format) but they have a very strong narrative voice that is heavily distinct from point of view character to point of view character, helping bring life and uniqueness to each member of a huge cast. The author isn't afraid to mix things up (such as in aforementioned script section) while providing an actual reason narratively for things being mixed up. The fic takes a bit to really get going but it doesn't drag at the same time, there's always something going on or something new to learn; the plot just doesn't rev up until you know the characters, particularly Sloan, pretty well, some foreshadowing has been dropped, and stakes have started to be established. After the plot really gets started it never stops, going on a roller coaster ride that takes turns that are certainly hard to expect, and ends in a powerful and effective ending that wraps everything up nicely and completely. I think there's a distinct barrier of entry, partially in that the story is quite long, but I think it's worth anybody giving a shot, because it really is stellar.

Seconding Fargo.
It's brilliant.

Fargo By: Bavitz
[Post-Rebellion] In the frostbitten American Midwest, ragged Magical Girls vie for territory to survive the unforgiving landscape. One such girl is Sloan Redfearn, who wastes away in Fargo, North Dakota, nursing a grudge and watching her hopes slowly die. But when Kyubey approaches with a unique opportunity, she becomes embroiled in a conspiracy that threatens to topple gods.

This, truly, is the most difficult thing for me when reccing stuff. Sometimes, a fic will really, I dunno, click with me? Yeah, let's go with that. The only issue is that I know for a fact that it's not all that good in some aspect that I get past for some other reason. And, it can be difficult to tell whether a fic is genuinely worthy of this kind of list, or if I'm blinded by something. This is why I reread every fic I think of suggesting or see recced here that I've already read.

There is another rec thread: General Recommendations and Updates

The other thread allows incomplete fics, and you can recommend things that aren't "the best damn fics you've ever read", though it's generally good to mention upfront anything that might cause others to reject the fic. That allows you to share fics you found interesting while hopefully not having to deal with a ton of derecs because it's a more casual recommendation.

I definitely feel you there. There's a few fics that just read so good, but I know are really just average.

it reminded me of the way the post-Obsidian Butterfly Anita Blake books felt like they could have been written by a completely different author.

I just had to comment on this. So much YES, Anita Blake was one of my all time favorite series when I was a teenager. It was just GREAT. And then.. the author decided to turn a gritty Urban Fantasy into a Reverse Harem Kinky Smut series with no reason or explanation. The author actually got totally pissed off when fans called her out on it. I'm glad to see someone who shares my pain!

That said, anyone know any good Anita Blake fics? That fit the criteria of this thread or otherwise?

Coming out of the Twilight series, a book with the tagline 'I don't date vampires, I kill them.' was just what I wanted. And then after a few books Anita Blake outdoes probably every other woman in paranormal fiction combined in the number of supernatural beings she's dating. It had so much potential.

And that's ignoring Hamilton's descent into weird writing. 'All women other than me are wanton sluts!' Thinks the woman about to go home and engage in a ninesome with a swanperson and a literal tiger, her vampire sub, and a clan of werewolves. It got really weird.

I'd like to recommend All for You, a PMMM/Future Diary crossover.

It involves end of series Yuno getting involved in post series PMMM after making a deal with Kyuubi.
It's well written and keeps everyone in character as far as I know (I'm not a huge fan of PMMM so there might be a bit of YMMV). I even enjoyed the ending even though I hate those sorts of endings usually.

A lot of candidates in my mind for this particular fandom, but Moratorium by Darkpetal16 (in my personal opinion) is the best Harry Potter fanfiction out there. It touched on some dark themes, but Darkpetal counterbalanced it perfectly.

EDIT: A bit more about the fic itself. It is a female!Harry with some slight changes in her upbringing. And power of friendship. All the friendship.

Chapter One said:
"If I wished to contact the underground society, how would I go about doing so?" Harry bluntly asked. She was fairly confident that even if she was displayed as something less than a good little girl, the goblins wouldn't care enough to share. Besides, it seemed like very few witches and wizards gave them the time of day.

His eyes narrowed. "Underground…? You mean like You-Know-Who?"

"Who?" Harry blinked.

His eyes narrowed into slits.

She shrugged. "I am assuming this is the same man that died while I was an infant?"

"Yes."

"Then yes, people like him."

"There are no people like him."

"Excuse me?"

"There was only You-Know-Who, and no one has dared take the title of Dark Lord since."

Harry stared at him blankly. And then very slowly she said, "You mean to tell me that no one has been greedy enough to take control of the major power vacuum?"
He only stared at her.

Her eyebrows rose. "Monsieur, might you point me to where I could find material on better learning the recent structure of this society?"

He gave her a snarl-like grin. "I am not a librarian. If you have nothing further to ask of your vaults—"

"Vaults?" Harry purred, smiling pleasantly. If the goblin noticed a darker gleam in her eyes, he did not mention it. Vaults, as in plural? "Monsieur, may I ask if perhaps there is a vault that does not store money—but items? The one we visited had only gold, and surely, my parents would have stored valuables here, and I doubt they only had money."

He bristled. "Fine! To the Potter Vault."

"Potter Vault? What, as in some sort of ancient family vault…? Dear me, is the wizarding society some sort of fanatical inbred monarchy?"

"Close."

"Wonderful!"
Derec. I'm entertained thus far, but that is not a child and that is some cancerous fanon as well. Belongs in a general rec thread, but I would not call it 'best damn' anything.
