The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

We do, Cenotaph's there, Green Sun is there. What is a sequel and what isn't is wonky tho, to give the example Game of Kings isn't there.

Sequels are not considered in favor, opposition, or with regards to completeness. Only the story being brought to consideration is relevant to the process of approval/refusal. Though sequels are not recommended in their own right, or at least to my knowledge they never have been, they could in theory be recommended if complete.

As far as I know, at any rate.

This one I'm not sure about given how the fic is structured, but I'm going to rec The Adventures of Kotohime. The stories follow the exploits of Kotohime, princess of Gensokyo, police officer, ski instructor, ships captain and whatever other titles she mentions that week. She goes around solving problems that might not exist solely because she feels like it and with great enthusiasm. Brilliantly written and gut bustingly hilarious, it's a go to fic for when I need a laugh.

While it's not marked as complete, each chapter is basically it's own fic, with a self contained story that at best references the others. They all take place chronologically with one story following the next, but you can read them in any order and not miss much. I'd call each one it's own fic and rec them on their own, but I'm not sure how the rest of the thread feels.
Armored Gensokyo

I can not say that this is legitimately the best fanfic ever, but I kind of love it without any degree of guilt involved. It starts of kind of messy, from what I remember of it the beginning had a fair amount of pacing and occasional grammar problems, but it eventually blossoms, and even from the very beginning I can't help but love the character characterizations, as well as the crack ship of Yukari Yakumo and Shu Shirakawa who actually feel like the characters they are supposed to be.

Also the Yuugi Hoshiguma and amnesiac Beowulf pairing is awesome too. Remilia starts out being somewhat bland, but evolves into a decent "I'm done with everything" snarker, and the less I talk about the Double Nineball team the better.
It hurts me deeply, but I have to de-rec this. I love Armored Core and Touhou, and Cirno is one of my favorite characters, but even that wasn't enough to carry me through the first ten chapters. Heck, I can barely remember anything outside the first chapter. I still love the ideas behind this, but it needs a lot of work before it reaches 'good', let alone 'best damn fic ever'.

I think that in cases like that, if the individual chapters really do function as self-contained stories, then it should be a viable recommendation as a short story compendium that is noted to be such. But by that same token, every single one would have to be a fully functional tale in its own right - cursory reference to prior stories should be acceptable so long as it isn't at any point pivotal to the referential stories.

I'll give it a look later to see if it fits those criteria, and encourage other people to do so as well. It's a new precedent for the thread we'd be setting, so it should get multiple reviews to decide if it's acceptable or not.

The Adventures of Kotohime is in fact marked as complete. As it was when I recommended it some ways back, and, so I am informed, was marked prior to that. Which you can see at the end of your own link.

Recommending this because it is now finished. Only noticed now because the update cycle was really long and I finally checked back to reread it. The great joy of reading this is that you are never quite sure if what Kotohime is saying is actually true or just a figment of her imagination. The crazy runs strong in her. Yet, there are moments where things happen, out of view of other characters, which lend credence to some of her statements.

I, having recommended it in the past, feel that I should say that I could go either way on this one. The implication that the author gives by marking the story as complete is that each chapter is a complete story on its own. Yet the continuing updates conflict with this notion.

As it stands, I remain in favor of this story being recommended, but feel that it should not get enclusion without a larger number of agreements than is typical, and/or direct consent of the OP of the thread, on account of the precedent setting involved.

I'll give it a look later to see if it fits those criteria, and encourage other people to do so as well. It's a new precedent for the thread we'd be setting, so it should get multiple reviews to decide if it's acceptable or not.

Absolute agreement with this idea.

I mean, people have recced series before, so I don't really have any issue as long as the chapters are genuinely self-contained stories. If someone wants to derec it on the basis that some of the chapters lack resolution, I think that's enough of a restriction.

Coup de What?: The Blacks were corrupted in mind, hardly at all in body. The Twilight Flight had their bodies corrupted, not their minds. They fight for Deathwing because they are brainwashed. What will one Twilight drake do when her mind is freed from the brainwashing?

This is a WoW fic and while the summary doesn't sound like much, this fic is definitely one of the best if not the best fics set in Warcraft and gives much needed love to all the Dragonflights. Also has a sequel from the same author that is also finished but reccing it here would be spoilery.

A Brief History of Histories by blackbournen. A Sailor Moon fic in which where each of the girls' civilian backgrounds have been switched around. For instance, instead of growing up in a loving family, this Usagi has to deal with a distant father and a mother who passed away while she was still very young, much like Rei's original Backstory.

Here a Paragraph to show how Heartbreaking Usagi upbring would have if she had Rei life.

"Man this really DOES hurt. I can't get away from any idea other than Usagi completely going in the opposite direction that Rei did when it comes to her father. While Rei rightfully saw her father's abandonment as his fault and his loss, Usagi would be certain that it was something wrong with HER. She wasn't good enough, she wasn't lovable enough, she just plain wasn't enough. There's no amount of love from her Grandpa to counteract the bitter truth in her heart that her father just doesn't love her. And an Usagi who doesn't believe that love can conquer everything is a very different Usagi indeed.

I see her maintaining her hope that one day her father will change his mind. That he'll see something in her, or accept whatever's wrong with her, and come back into her life. Usagi would forgive him without question, though in truth there's no forgiveness necessary because she never thinks to blame him. That optimism I see her maintaining, but it's a dim candle versus the spotlight that is our Usagi. This Usagi keeps hoping because it's all she knows to cling to, but every birthday with only a form letter obviously signed by an assistant makes the candle burn a little less bright.

That's going to spill into this Usagi's relationships. She'll be less determined, for one, because her self-confidence is so low. She'll still make friends easily. She's STARVING for people to love and to love her. However she'll be caught somewhere between doing anything to please them and keep them around, and a cynical voice at the back of her mind telling her that she isn't worth having them at all. While our Usagi is like a relentless bomb of love and friendship that doesn't know how to stop, this Usagi is already prepared for failure before she starts. She's desperate to keep people and secretly certain she can't at the same time. "How To Friend" is one of the things our Usagi is best at. This Usagi is at war with herself about it.

On the plus side, this Usagi would have a much stronger focus and work ethic. Unfortunately it all stems from her eagerness to please. Her father would send her to TA, and Usagi hopes that if she excels there, she'll earn his love. She struggles constantly and is never better than average. Her father never notices.

Grandpa struggles with Usagi too. She's so sensitive to criticism and he feels so terribly for her that he tends to treat her like she'll break. She's his wonderful perfect granddaughter, and unfortunately that never really helps her to build up her confidence.

This is a really tough road for Usagi, and it sort of sucks that we're on it. Becoming Sailor Moon will really help her out here I think. I just hope it would help her out enough before she's really tested."

Oh, seconded in a heartbeat.

Question ?,
Is there any good world of warship fic and kancolle that is finished ?
This:
Red in Tooth and Claw (Kantai Collection)
is finished.

EDIT: Is it worth a rec? I have to reread it.
EDIT2: Also, consider whether this is the best thread to be asking that question. I can not help but feel that the WoW or Kantai Collection fiction discussion and ideas threads would be able to get you your answers more easily.

Can we agree to just ignore recs that don't at least have a few words explaining the rec? Because there's something like a hundred fics here and no reason why we should consider any of them.

Well, the DC one with Luthor was already rec'd in this thread and approved by several folks, myself included, so we can keep that I suppose.

If you toss in 50 recs, nobody's going to be able to go over them, and therefore they won't get discussed.

Pick 2 or 3, write up why you think they're the best damn fics you've ever read, then come back.
