The Arena: An Elder Scrolls GSRP

The best techniques are passed on by the survivors. - Gaiden Shinji

Tamriel. It is the largest continent of the known world, a vast melting pot of cultures and religions. According to its inhabitant's creation myths, the gods created mortals on Tamriel. Its name is an Altmeris word meaning "Dawn's Beauty."

But there is another meaning to the word. In the Imugal language - spoken by the Imga of Valenwood - is the word "Tam'Rugh" which roughly translates to "The Arena." This meaning of the continent's name resonates, for this is a time of chaos and strife.

The year is 2E 440. Ten years ago Morag Tong assassins murdered Potentate Savirien-Chorak. A new Potentate, Aixnieras-Ves, rules a dying empire from the old seat of kings, the Imperial City. But in the West, an existential threat emerges as a young military commander rises up against him.

But Cyrodiil is not the only region on the verge of general war. Valenwood is bereft of both its King and its ancient capital of Falinesti. Both disappeared twenty years ago, and the seven branches of the Camorans fight. Meanwhile, foreign adventurers carve their own petty domains out of the wilderness.

Hammerfell is burning with the flame of revolution as the Forebears rise against the monarchy. Meanwhile, two rival claimants for the title of High King divide Skyrim's west from its east. Both these sources of unrest could be the source of a general economic collapse.

Honor wears the face of your next foe. - Gaiden Shinji

The Second Empire of Man lasted for 647 years, with two dynasties, five Emperors, and two Potentates. This vast realm collapsed in a fortnight. Without the Potentate, the ship of state immediately dashed against the rocks. In the wake of this collapse, Tamriel would never be the same.

Without a centralizing force holding them together, the regions of Man fracture. Warlords, robber barons, bandit-kings; every manner of tyranny descends. Each man with a hill to his name wants to be the next conqueror and tests his mettle against his neighbors.

Piracy increases, and wars flare up across the continent. The once-vibrant trade networks of Tamriel wither away. Left bereft of the resources needed to live the good life, people struggle to survive. This pressure is especially acute in less-developed regions, like Black Marsh and the Reach.
In all this, the Summerset Isles and Morrowind shine bright as oases of stability. The latter was never part of the Second Empire, and the former was in name only. Now the Altmer and Dunmer prosper. But riches bring with them their own threats of future suffering.

But all is not lost. While the future promises political chaos, there's also the prospect of a better world. The downfall of the Potentate is also the end of its repressive censorship system. The arts and culture are flourishing like they haven't in centuries.

There is also the potential for new technological and magical developments. The Potentate never cared about grand projects like the mananauts, for example. The lunar colonies on Secunda are quiet but not abandoned. Meanwhile, the Mage's Guild has survived the downfall and remains a continent-spanning organization.

But if the world is to harvest these fruits, Tamriel must recover its former peace and tranquility. The old world is dying, and the new one struggles to emerge. Now is the time of monsters. The only question is, who are the monsters, and who will defend the innocent and weak?

Go in peace. Let your fate be written in the Elder Scrolls…

Hello, and welcome to The Arena: An Elder Scrolls GSRP, a new play-by-post gamed based on the series of video games from Bethesda Softworks, and more specifically the total conversion mod Elder Kings II for Crusader Kings III. This is my second attempt at running the game, and I hope to use the lessons I learned from the first time around to make it excel.

Players in this game assume the role of rulers trying to survive and thrive in Tamriel's Interregnum. This is a period of time about a thousand years before the main series, and over a century before the events of the Elder Scrolls Online. During the Interregnum there was no central authority in Tamriel.

Instead, ultimate authority has fallen in the hands of dozens of warlords, feudal rulers, and pretender-Emperors. They will struggle and work together, seeking to survive and thrive, and perhaps ultimately one of them will become the next Emperor of Tamriel. I hope you stay, play, and enjoy.

This post is the start of a series that will go into further detail on each region of Tamriel, including maps, recent history, and major political figures. After this series is done, the game opens up to player applications. Come back soon to check for further updates.
