It has now been a week since the Steam release of Dwarf Fortress, and as was promised on my Interest Check thread, this thread is now going up. Now, regardless of if you are a follower from that thread or a newcomer that has stumbled across this place, I welcome you, to the Plane of Prophesies!
Or more specifically, a small part of the Plane of Prophesies, the Risky Continent to be exact, in the northwestern corner of the map. Here we shall (hopefully!) build a mighty fortress, a beacon of Dwarven civilization which will stand the test of time. When it comes your turn to play you are welcome to take a look at the world map in it's entirety, if you wish.
Now, onto some rules. The game will firstly be completely vanilla, so no mods are allowed. Secondly, as was stated before, you will get a single in-game year to play. When the first day of the next year arrives you are required to save your game and hand the save over to the next person in line. Each player will get a week to write up their turn, though extensions may be made. Simply contact me via PM if you have need. Thirdly, when your reign ends, name one of the Dwarves in the fortress after yourself. Despite retiring/getting demoted for gross negligence, you are still a member of the fort. Your exploits in the years after your reign may provide funny or tragic stories for your successors to regale us with.
Finally, you are allowed to request for additional turns to play, so long as they are non-sequential. That means after your current term is up, you must wait at least one in-game year before requesting to play again. Your request may be denied if others have not gotten a chance to play yet, so keep that in mind.
With all that said, please treat eachother with respect, and above all remember that Losing is FunTM
Minor issue, would anyone like to swap year with me and/or be willing to wait a bit longer for my part? I'm largely going to be unable to access PC between 18th-27th. I know Lurking hasn't posted his year first, but I figure to bring it up now just in case.

This is acceptable. I am just about finishing up the winter months of my save. I'll use whatever free time I get this weekend to edit it up my turn. I'll swap you and Duzzit now regardless.
If you're fine with trusting the final year to someone with little to no experience who might make everything go down in flames I'd love to give it a try!

It isn't the final year per say, but I am gonna add you anyways. Since we now have filled 10 years worth of rulers, I'll start adding years as more people request to join. So keep on asking and signing up if you wish to participate still.
The Diminishing Continent. The center of our world. Since the emergence of the Planes in the time before the Age of Myth, this vast land of fertile valleys and tall mountains has been the home of all that is good....and all that is evil. From the Elves of the deep woods, to the bustling Humans across the plains, to the wretched Goblins in their fortresses. They all emerged here, and spread far and wide.
And yet, another people still called this landmass their home. The Dwarves first emerged centuries ago to found their first settlements along the great mountain chains of the continent. Tangathkogan, The Trampled Boat, is one of the oldest collections of Dwarven fortresses that have banded together, forging great weapons and equally beautiful works of art in stone, metal and bone in ages past. It was a glorious time, that sadly could not last forever.
The Diminishing Continent is known as such, due to it's unstable foundations. Over the centuries it has continued to grow weaker, and slowly but surely slide back into the ocean that birthed it so long ago. Marshland and swamps spread, rock outcroppings collapse into the sea, the very mountains shudder and shake as their deepest parts fill with water and grime. This great crisis is known to all, and so all civilizations, from the Dwarves to the Goblins, have banded together in efforts to save themselves, spreading their wings for the first time in ages to venture past the shores of their homelands. The need for space and resources is becoming a desperate one, and conflicts are already brewing.
But all this is mostly irrelevant to one particular Dwarf, safely tucked away for the time being in the mountainhomes. All this chaos and uncertainty, in his mind, serves only as a golden opportunity...

Markos, if you weren't a million miles away, I could kiss you. The prospecting teams finally came back from Risky, and the place is a damn mineral hoard. Silver, gold, even platinum! Some of the boys mutter about even being able to find adamantium in such a location. If even a tenth of the projected minerals are there, we'll all be very rich Dwarves by this time next year.
We'll set out when the snow finally melts and the roads are reopened. Can't expect much official support from the Mountainhomes, or the mining guild would be breathing down our necks for their cut of the profits within moments. We can't have that, now can we?

The wagon is secured on the ship and we'll cross the ocean in a few hours. Damn that Queen Risen and her advisors! If the continent is sinking, you'd think letting people leave of their own volition would be the smart thing to do! That bloodsucking official squeezed us for everything we were worth, and foisted this damn colony charter on us before we could slink away! At the very least, I just had to flash it's seal into the face of that dirty ship captain and he was all too happy to ferry our band. After that damn clerk took our gold it's the only option we had left...
We'll have to work fast when we arrive. If I remember my management classes correctly, the first additional wave of colonists are to arrive after the snows melt in the winter. The boys and I then best finish our business and vacate the area before then. I'm sure those bumpkins will be able to handle themselves with what we leave behind.

We're getting close at last. The terrain has been difficult to push the cart through and the cattle certainly aren't happy with pulling this load much farther. Lokum says we just have to cross this hill and we should be golden. From the description the prospectors gave me, the area is mostly a flat plain, so we'll have to erect some basic fortifications around the dig site if we want to last long enough to haul anything out.
Just have to travel a bit farther...

Well, we arrived. I just wish we could leave! I should have never listened to Lokum! That little bastard must have been slacking with the cattle bindings or something, because they came loose during the downhill descent and sent the damn cart flying away. We're damn lucky none of the supplies got damaged in the roll downhill, or I'd have thrown him into the first cave we found and seal the fucker inside!
Urgh.
The wagon is a mess, and will never be used again unless extensive repairs are made. Rakust says she might be able to fix it by the autumn, but only with the right materials. We'd best hope that the trees around here are what she needs. Regardless, I've asked her to start cutting them down. Some palisades will keep wildlife and unwanted guests out for the time being, while Olin gets to work digging. We'll have to start carving a spot to grow our own food too. With the wagon busted there is no way to get back to the ship and it's great stores in a reasonable amount of time. Armok damn it all!

15th of Granite - Expedition Campsite
Setting his pen down Lurking groaned and rested his palm against his face in a vain attempt to forestall a migraine. This trip was supposed to be simple, now they very well might starve if they don't start working soon. There had to be some seeds in these bushes they could use to grow something edible right?
"Boss?" Lokum spoke up, and Lurking could only sigh.
"What is it Lokum? I need to figure out a solution to our seed problem."
"So those plump helmet seeds Fath brought with us aren't any good?" Lurking's head whipped around to face Lokum.
"What?! You're saying Fath has plump helmet seeds?!"
"And some others from the looks of it, yeah. Why?" Lokum simply shrugged. Lurking huffed away, dropping everything in his hands and hurrying off to the nearby wagon.
Lokum picked up the folded letter and muttered out it's words. Real shame his brother had to go and get himself killed in that last war. He was always better with letters than he was...
"You are to make a outpost for the glory of Tangathkogan...whether by bolt, plow or hook...a new chapter of Dwarven history begins here, at this place.... Huh. It's missing something." Lokum picked up the discarded quill, and happily filled in a fitting name for their camp.

If I find out who messed with our colony charter I'll throttle them! Since the damn thing is stamped with the royal seal I can't even change it now if I wanted to! Stuff like this can be used by royal officials back home to send us straight to the Hammerers for fraud!
Urgh. I need a drink.
Gonna sketch these out in the journal before I get plastered. Should hopefully make sure I remember.
A simple stockpile here for everything on the wagon. I'll have Led organize all this junk later when the situation is no longer as dire. Designating the area nearby for the animals. Although the cows can't pull the cart anymore, if we keep them alive we might be able to get some milk out of them in the future. The dogs will keep watch and make sure no unexpected guests interrupts their grazing.
If we're lucky this place should have the soil we need for some farming. I can't believe Fath's seed collection for once will be what saves us all. She's never gonna let me live this one down...
We'll put some simple bedrooms here for the team. Even if we are out in the boonies, they still deserve some space for themselves... And as the leader I will need some more room for myself.
Much better.
And finally, despite the fact we're out in the middle of nowhere with no way back home, that still doesn't mean any of the diggers gets to slack on mining! We got to dig down and see if we can't discover some metal veins, make this trip at least a little worthwhile.

I must be seeing things. Did the ale go bad on the way here? Swear I saw a giant rodent of some kind off in the distance. The boys told me they didn't see anything. Only signs of life out here are distant wolf howling and that flock of bluejays above us the other night...
19th of Granite
Maybe your luck would be better, Lokum, if decided to not fish in the pools of stagnant water! Armok above, why does he have to come complain to me about this?!
26th of Granite
Sand! The entire damn area is made of sand! We can't farm this! Gods damn it all. I hope the next layer that Olin digs out contains some soil. I'll designate the dug out area as extra storage til I can find out what the hell I should do with it...
28th of Granite
The palisade is finally getting put up. I was starting to worry we might not get around to it before something bad happened. Praise be to Rakust and her hefty axearm. Now to just set up some workspace for her to make us some beds.
5th of Slate
Soil! Beautiful, beautiful dirt and soil! Finally, we can start planting. I've ordered Olin and Led to dig that out as quickly as possible so Fath can finally get to work. We might not starve after all!
10th of Slate
Damn! Just when things were going so well. The murky pools up on the surface go a lot deeper than I thought. I'll have to put the still and alcohol storage elsewhere.
14th of Slate
It took an age and a half, but the farm plot is finally up and running. Plump Helmets grow all year round, grow quickly and leave behind lots of seeds for future use, so for now that will be the primary food source of the camp. When the planting is finally done we can set up the still and storage nearby.
Reminder to myself, get that ashery up and running as quickly as is feasible. Potash produced from wood ash will be vital for keeping this plot fertilized!
15th of Slate
Hmph. This wasn't quite what I had in mind for "riches" when I made this damn trip!
17th of Slate
Wood? At this depth? What in Armok's name is going on here? Olin has been given explicit orders to not touch it any further. That coal might be useful for later colonists, but I have no plans on touching it.
19th of Slate
Brewery's done. Course, til the harvest there really won't be much for us to make alcohol with. Good thing we got a lot of spares up top. I'll order most of it put in the underground storage and...some for my own personal quarters.
4th of Felsite
Finally got the bedrooms sorted out...mostly. I swear Rakust is paying me back in her own twisted way for dragging her all the way out here. We need that damn ashery up for making potash or this harvest ain't gonna be a big one, yet we apparently got no empty barrels for this task despite me ordering her on multiple occasions to make us some goddamn barrels then!
And my cabinet still isn't done apparently. I can already feel my headache returning, and I need my booze fix in the comfort of my own hole!
21st of Felsite
The crew took their sweet time, but we got all we need for making fertilizer now. Should hopefully get it done before the spring harvest is done. I need a drink. Thankfully the lazy shits finally decided to get my cabinet done...
On a lighter note, tetrahedrite has been struck in the lower mines! While certainly not the most stunning of finds, it is the first positive mineral news I've heard since we arrived. If we're lucky, we can get our first bars of Silver created in a month.
