So! There's a whole collection of stories about super heroes and super powers that aren't as widely recognized or as widely popular as some other works. Comics like Astro City and The Tick, Movies like Glass, books like The Institute, and whatever one shot manga is currently focusing on super powers at the time. I can already hear questions, such as "Why make a general discussion thread rather than a specialized thread?" and "Wouldn't this help make those works even more obscure?"

Both have three points I'd like to put forth as an answers:
  1. Single threads for anything of sufficient obscurity will inevitably not get a lot of traction on a forum of this size and activity. For example, if I were to make a thread on a 2010's book series focusing on a bunch of teenagers getting locked in an unbreakable dome and given superpowers as a modern take on "The Lord of the Flies", I wouldn't be surprised if the number of posts within the thread to remain within the single digits.
  2. Focusing different stories of minor recognition is quite likely to increase their exposure by people searching for more general things. This could help introduce people to new stories they did not know before.
  3. I'm not sure if this is a positive but the less number of threads going around could pottentially increase activity(? I need a source on this if there is one I'm just basing myself off observations here and I know those may be horribly flawed.)

In other words, this is a discussion, recs, and fanfic ideas thread for lesser known works centering on Super Powers.

Took the liberty of making one since I couldn't find a general thread for such.

If they focus on super-heroes or super-powers, they should be!

In that case, there is this crossover idea that has been nagging me for some time. It is between The Boys and Black Summer.

What is Black Summer you might ask? Black Summer tells the story of Seven Guns, seven (now six) metahumans that got their powers from intensive surgery and augmentations. The idea of their creation was not to create superheroes, but to create the future replacements of law enforcement and military in the United States. Then one day their leader, John Horus decides to kill the President and tells the government to get its shit together. Shit goes down inevitably.

That seems positively riveting! Lots of things to explore with that one, especially with the different approaches to supers of both series and the possible interactions that may arise between both of them. Especially since if I remember The Boys correctly, most of the supers of that setting were made by a company and Black Summer's metahumans were created by a lone scientist if wikipedia is correct (which I'm doubting given the lack of detail on the article). If inspiration does strike, do post a snippet, I'd love to read it.

Yep, you remember it correctly. And that said scientist is also a Gun.

The real issue is the disparity of power. In The Boys, amongst the Seven, only Homelander serves as a legitimate threat. On the other side, all of the Guns are extremely dangerous, individually and as a team.

I actually did a fanfic on the Boys, because I wondered why 98% (I made that number up) of Supers in The Boys are assholes....

It makes a lot of sense, really. and we could even say the brain damage varies just like how it varies in giving people different powersets instead of them all having the same exact powerset. and that's why some people are less of an asshole than others are, but still are mildly assholish in their own way.

Headcanon accepted.

So we're allowed to post ideas on here? Neat! Had an idea that's been lurking in the deep recess-folds of my mind that I've been positively itching to share!

Basically the idea I had is that of an eldritch cult that works to do good, & utilises its resources & arcane capabilities to enable willing members of sufficient bravery/courage to act on the same level as other super-powered individuals.

A good chunk of the conflict would arise from the fact that one would typically expect an eldritch cult to be villainous, a group that seeks to perform horrific rituals and terrible sacrifices dedicated to the abominable entities they worship in exchange for things like power, wealth, sex, social status, & so on.

Naturally, a good bit of inspiration would be drawn from the webcomic Eldritch Kindness, seeing as it's one of the only pieces of media I'm familiar with where there are genuinely benevolent eldritch deities involved in events.
