Stark Quest 2.0: The Search for Shinies

@Evillevi - Just an FYI, common sense stuff like "Keep Tavar somewhere secure and not near her host while we're talking to the host, if at all possible." Harlon will usually do automatically.

As far as the rest clause, I'm not entirely sure it's needed. We're probably still pretty high on adrenaline right now, and we used the Regeneration sequence which makes us require less sleep. Harlon could also use the Endurance Sequence if he needed to. Still, I added some rest to be done before beginning Possession training.

Introduce ourselves and tell her we came to save our brother from Viserys. Quite frankly that is literally the only reason but things escalate since most people are equally good. Go talk to her about the below sympathetically. EG: It must have been so terrifying to not have control, freedom, the knowledge that there's a chance that this month, this week, this day and hour may be her last.

This seems superfluous with trying "to be as kind and gentle as possible." Also, I imagine she probably wouldn't care for the reminder of her torment.

Tell her the current situation, and apologize for not being able to let her go right now. But then point out that its as much for her protection as its ours. If Jorah or Drogo found her, they might react badly. Really badly. Especially since Tavar was instrumental in Viserys's plans and that the aforementioned two might be aware of it.

I don't think your addition here really adds anything or makes us more charming. Seems kinda panicky to me, tbh, and it was Illyrio's plans rather than Visery's. (that idiot couldn't plan his way out of a paper sack)

Also, it's easier if we keep things to a smaller number of plans (you can vote [] Enjou or [] Plan Enjou if you wanted to vote for mine, for example) - we tend to change the votes a lot, as discussion goes on, to add in or remove ideas. If you want small changes to one of the main votes, it's best to just tag the person who made it and make your suggestion before going and making a new vote. So long as it's a good suggestion it usually gets added.

Welcome to the quest, btw. Glad to have ya!

EDIT - Is anyone else going to vote, btw? Seems we're having a slow night.

A Mother's Ruminations -- Interlude

Father, Winter is Coming. I dare not give full details, even in a coded message, but suffice to say that I have good reason to believe that the world is about to change drastically. An Age may very well end soon. I have learned things that would make me question my sanity, were Jon and Hallis not both witness as well, and agreed to things that make me question who I am. Winter is Coming, and we must be ready, for it will be long and terrible.

I advise that you begin taking actions to shore up our alliances and take the early steps to prepare for war, should it come. In that vein, I know that Uncle Edmure is unmarried, and the Late Walder Frey has many daughters and granddaughters. Given that they have the largest army among his vassals, it may be wise for him to wed one of them. It is my understanding that Walder Frey is a man of ego, and gaining such a tie to his liege lord could ensure his loyalty. Consult mother on this, as she would have a better understanding of Riverlands politics than I. Perhaps she could visit the Twins to see if there is an acceptable match.

Going to another topic, I have long harbored a desire to create a place of learning in the North to rival the Citadel. Our people may be stubborn and look at scholars as womanly, but I assure you that this will be needed. I have good reason to believe that the Citadel will soon become untenable in the long term, and we may need to provide a place of sanctuary for the maesters who wish to flee. Again, I cannot give details through a letter, and for that I am sorry. I have notes on my ideas and preliminary sketches for an extension to Winterfell for this purpose hidden in a false bottom of my favorite Cyvasse board. Maester Luwin would know the one. I ask that you take a look, and if you agree that this idea would be worthwhile to work with Luwin on getting the groundwork prepared for when I return. Time will be of the essence.

-Your son, now and always, Harlon.

Winter is Coming. Things are more dire than you imagine. I'm sorry. I will spread false rumors.

Catelyn Stark knelt, prayed, and read over the two letters for the thousandth time, and her knuckles turned white as she clenched and unclenched her fists.

Harlon was supposed to be the sensible one!

When Robb had run off to Essos to pursue Ser Jorah, she had been greatly disappointed, but altogether unsurprised. Her second son had much of his Uncle Brandon in him, and Dacey Mormont had her claws deep in him. It had been devastating, but unsurprising, when the older and more experienced Ser Jorah Mormont had defeated him and captured him.

On the other hand, Harlon had always seemed wise beyond his years, even if he spent more time in the library than in the training yard. The mother had counted it a blessing that her firstborn had labored to hone his remarkable mind, and she had thought it would lead him to becoming a great Lord of Winterfell. Especially, after he got some experience dealing with Southerners. Oldtown was supposed to be an education in more than one way for her favored son.

Instead, she had these two damnable letters that Maester Luwin had translated for Ned.

The first read like a warning of war. The warning of imminent danger was vague and worrisome, and her father, Lord Hoster Tully, had fairly laughed at the idea of marrying Edmure to a Frey girl when she had sent him a letter. The Freys were important vassals, but the Late Walder Frey would not have a Tully wed to one of his innumerable offspring. Ned had shot down the idea opening this "university" as being too expensive, especially if they were going to have hard times ahead.

The second letter was even more troubling than the first. Its brevity and cryptic nature pointed at dire portents. And then came the news that Harlon had disappeared immediately thereafter with the enigmatic Lord Hightower and Malora Hightower.

When the grey old man had read the letters, he'd been as disturbed as her husband at the news, and his fingers had interlaced throughout his chain nervously. The maester was like a second father to Harlon, and in some ways knew the heir best of all.

Later, when Harlon's disappearance and disobedience were discovered Ned had been wroth, and the Lord of Winterfell had removed himself to the godswood to find what balance he could. There had been quiet talks of disinheriting Harlon, but it had been decided that they'd take the wait and see approach. Though Eddard had begun to call the banners, and he had finally acquiesced to the Manderly's request for a Northern Fleet. Two in fact.

There had even been talk about launching a strike on Pentos backed by the might of the Iron Throne, but nothing had come of it. Until things became more clear the situation was too volatile. Any strike was likely to end with Robb (and Theon) dead, and the Targaryens escaping to another hiding place.

To say that negotiations were going poorly would have been an understatement. Prince Viserys refused all reasonable offers for Robb and Theon's return, and demanded Ned renounce Robert and throw his support behind the Targaryen.

Of course, Ned refused, and all attempts at diplomatically retrieving Robb and Theon had failed.

What haunted her most was the question of why Harlon had disobeyed.

She could only speculate that Harlon had decided to launch a rescue mission for his brother. They loved each other, but this sort of action seemed wildly out of character for her bookish son.

Perhaps, Ned's bastard, Jon, had put him up to it. Those born on the wrong side of the sheets were more wanton and treacherous, and the baseborn boy had always had an overly familiar nature with her sons.

The Lady of Winterfell could vividly imagine the war-like bastard egging her scholarly son on. What better way to win glory? What better way to erase the stigma that the backwards Northerners held her son in? What better way for a bastard to eliminate a trueborn heir, and move closer to the seat of Winterfell?

Wasn't it enough that the bastard had been recognized as a First Sword? An ancient and esteemed position that no bastard should rightfully aspire to.

Catelyn shook her head. She was being uncharitable. Jon was a bastard, and a slap in the face, but he had never shown any animosity towards his half-brothers. Quite the opposite in fact. Harlon had berated her for these thoughts, and she tried to reign them in.

The noble lady glanced around the Sept, and the Seven stared back. She had spent the last month in the Sept praying for Robb and Harlon. She had neglected her other children. There was nothing she could do for either of her eldest children, but Sansa, Arya, and Bran needed their mother.

Pulling herself to her feet, she looked into a mirror on her way out. She looked haggard, like she had aged a decade... and was that more gray in her hair?

Squaring herself, she strode out into the crisp autumn air, and blinked owlishly as her eyes adjusted to the noonday sun.

This is similar to the effect I imagined Dalinar having, what with the...eventful time he had in King's Landing and his slaying of the Mountain That Rides in single combat. Neither of the Stark sons we've played as have been very good sons, have they? Heh.

Better.

Excellent brothers though!

She might have an aneurysm if she hears the truth about Oldtown and Pentos. At the very least, she'd try to ensure that Harlon would never leave Winterfell with anything less than an army!:p

And, yeah, both characters have given her some serious grey hairs.

:V The difference is tone and is one I believe is major.

Unlike your vote. Mine is while mostly small variations, is meant to set up a tottally different tone since if the Host is actually innocent, being kind and gentle (the tone) is more likely to get her indebted to us than yours which piles up every single thing in one sitting. It's the same reason why there's two distinct sets of Questioning periods since it allows us to portray ourselves better if all the "Are you all right questions" came first and the serious question comes second.

Similarly the removal of the Blind, gag, etc option is done to maximise the chance of us getting the host to like use enough to start coorperating more than if she feels under pressure from afforementioned thing. However removing it is significant if we're wrong and the host is capable of good offensive attacks.

Edit: For tone Imagine if you will someone say "He loves you". Now a former lover could say that with resent, hate, admiration, etc and depending on the tone the meaning is different. That you're asking hte same questions is irrelevant to the situation you're trying to set up as the two are largely independant things that are just very closely related

You've got to look at it from her perspective. Jon's presence potentially endangers the status of her own children which is pretty much the basis of female power in Westerosi society, and the fact that Jon is raised at Winterfell is a meaningful insult to her. Plus, Jon's a much better warrior than the heir to Winterfell, and that matters to many people.

Also, Harlon's letters only arrived after Jon arrived, so its not out of the question for Cat to correlate the two things together, especially when she's looking for something to blame.
...Yeah, Harlon called her out for the way she treated Jon in a huge argument, and it was not pretty. It seems that some of it has stuck.

This argument is one of the reasons that Jon is so devoted to Harlon.

Reaction Post. 369 words.

Catelyn Stark knelt, prayed, and read over the two letters for the thousandth time, and her knuckles turned white as she clenched and unclenched her fists.

Harlon was supposed to be the sensible one!

We are the sensible one... sort of. We won't abandon Robb when he'll be very much needed.

When Robb had runoff to Essos to pursue Ser Jorah, she had been greatly disappointed, but altogether unsurprised. Her second son had much of his Uncle Brandon in him, and Dacey Mormont had her claws deep in him. It had been devastating, but unsurprising, when the older and more experienced Ser Jorah Mormont had defeated him and captured him.

So yeah, Dacey Mormont seems to have egged Robb on a bit. Or maybe Robb just wanted to impress her. Guess we'll find out later.

Uh, yeah, two weeks into Oldtown we fought a Demon. Then two months later Leyton Hightower tried to shove a second Demon into our skull. Yes, it was VERY educational. On the plus side we got magic out of it.

Instead, she had these two damnable letters that Maester Luwin had translated for Ned.

Uh... sorry?

The first read like a warning of war.

That's because it is.

YOU IDIOTS! Well, we'll just have to hope Walder Frey dies during the Awakening then.

Ned had shot down the idea opening this "university" as being too expensive, especially if they were going to have hard times ahead.

NOOOOOO! Oh well, money ain't gonna be a problem anymore, Ned. We're about to seize a merchant empire.

The second letter was even more troubling than the first. Its brevity and cryptic nature pointed at dire portents.

Yeah... that was kind of the point.

And then came the news that Harlon had disappeared immediately thereafter with the enigmatic Lord Hightower and Malora Hightower.

I guess disappearing with the Mad Maid and her old man might be a bit worrying.
When the grey old man had read the letters, he'd been as disturbed as her husband at the news, and his fingers had interlaced throughout his chain nervously. The maester was like a second father to Harlon, and in some ways knew the heir best of all.

Sorry, Luwin.

Later, when Harlon's disappearance and disobedience were discovered Ned had been wroth, and the Lord of Winterfell had removed himself to the godswood to find what balance he could.

Sorry, Ned.

There had been quiet talks of disinheriting Harlon, but it had been decided that they'd take the wait and see approach.

Nonsense. You would never do that and you know it. At least so long as you never hear about Operation Blood Glamour.

Though Eddard had begun to call the banners, and he had finally acquiesced to the Manderly's request for a Northern Fleet. Two in fact.

Yay! We get a navy! At least there's that.

There had even been talk about launching a strike on Pentos backed by the might of the Iron Throne, but nothing had come of it. Until things became more clear the situation was too volatile.

Yes, thank you for not taking a dump on all our plans.

Any strike was likely to end with Robb (and Theon) dead, and the Targaryens escaping to another hiding place.

You're only a quarter right... and she does that too, I see. Theon was not well liked by anyone but Robb, it seems.

Of course they did. You're dealing with a lunatic who also happens to be an idiot.

What haunted her most was the question of why Harlon had disobeyed.

She could only speculate that Harlon had decided to launch a rescue mission for his brother. They loved each other, but this sort of action seemed wildly out of character for her bookish son.

We have to. The North can't be weak at this juncture. We need Robb, so we can have at least two generals after Ned gets his head chopped off.

Perhaps, Ned's bastard, Jon, had put him up to it. Those born on the wrong side of the sheets were more wanton and treacherous, and the baseborn boy had always had an overly familiar nature.

Yeah... no. Jon's awesome. Jon stopped us from chopping Dany's head off. You should be really glad that Jon is here to be our morality chain.

Also, it's for the shinies. Glory is just a bonus.

Catelyn shook her head. She was being uncharitable. Jon was a bastard, and a slap in the face, but he had never shown any animosity towards his half-brothers. Quite the opposite in fact. Harlon had berated her for these thoughts, and she tried to reign them in.

Yes, listen to your wise son for he is wiser and smarter than you. And stop hating on Jon!

The noble lady glanced around the Sept, and the Seven stared back. She had spent the last month in the Sept praying for Robb and Harlon.

Wrong gods to be praying to, lady. Not that they'd be much help to us in Pentos anyways.

She had neglected her other children. There was nothing she could do for either of her eldest children, but Sansa, Arya, and Bran needed their mother.

Yeah, we can handle ourselves. Don't worry about it. We've got MAGIC! And a Demon vassal.

Pulling herself to her feet, she looked into a mirror on her way out. She looked haggard, like she had aged a decade... and was that more gray in her hair?

Uh... sorry mom.
Squaring herself, she strode out into the crisp autumn air, and blinked owlishly as her eyes adjusted to the noonday sun.

@Mazrick - shouldn't it still be summer, given ASOIAF's seasons? Or do you not have long seasons in this crossover?

Well, summer is basically over, so there might be a very short autumn between summer and winter? If she knows that Winter is Coming.

Otherwise, she shouldn't know summer is ending, so autumn makes no sense.

IIRC in canon the current summer ends a few months after the direwolf event.

EDIT - Autumn starts when the comet comes. It's noted at the start of the second book.

Yeah, there are definitely long seasons... its too good of a plot point not to exploit. The line about autumn is a bit figurative, but also a bit literal. The former because Winter is Coming, and the latter is because the end of the Long Summer is likely approaching. Its only a half a year away or so.

-[X] Ask her what her name is and where she comes from.
--[X] Does she have any family or friends that would miss her? Husband? Children?
--[X] Introduce ourself and tell her we came to save our brother.
-[X] Tell her the current situation, and apologize for not being able to let her go right now. But then point out that its as much for her protection as its ours. If Jorah or Drogo found her, they might react badly.
-[X] Ask her if she was aware while Tavar was in control of her.
-[X] Ask her if she understands what happened to her and if she knows what the forsaken are.
--[X] Explain the forsaken and their use of hosts if she does not know.
-[X] Tell her that we have bound Tavar, and that she won't have to worry. We won't give her back to Tavar. She is safe now.
-[X] Ask her if she would be willing to tell us things she saw while Tavar was controlling her. Apologize for the necessity, but tell her that it could be very important.
--[X] Ask how she was captured by Tavar in the first place.
--[X] Ask her if she saw Tavar use magic, and whether she understood it and if she is capable of using it herself now.
--[X] Ask if she saw anything that she believes it would be important we know?
-[X] Ask her if she knows how Illyrio knew we were in the city.
-[X] Also ask her if she has any information on Drogo.
-[X] Tell her that we have Dany and Viserys as prisoners too. Ask if she knows what Tavar taught Dany, and how skilled Dany is?
--[X] Anything else she knows about Dany that we should be aware of?
---[X] Ask her if she knows what Dany's artifacts do.
-[X] Ask her if she wants or needs anything.
-[X] Get some rest, and then start training Possession to Level 3 while you wait for morning.
-[X] In the morning, send out some men to buy supplies. Some others will go out to get an idea of the state of the city and to see if they can find Leyton Hightower.
--[X] Pentoshi clothing, to make the men blend in better.
--[X] The necessary items for a blood oath.
--[X] More Essence of Night, in case you need to keep someone out. Poison too, if the same apothecary has something good.
--[X] Some books to keep any prisoners you keep awake and unbound entertained.
--[X] A decent cyvasse set.
--[X] Some decent food and wine.
--[X] Anything the host requested that isn't a security risk.
--[X] Some caged birds, if they can find them. Preferably ordinary ones, like ravens or gulls. Nothing that would stand out.

Enjou, Fluffiness

[X] Do not talk to the host, keep her unconscious
[X] Speak to the Hightower men and reassure them that you're going to do everything you can to locate their Lord.
[X] Discreetly do a Blood Magic ritual with Viserys' blood to call down a night bird to possess, and then send it to spy on Drogo's manse.

[X] You think your failed attack against Illyrio has given you some insight into the Destruction Sequence. While you are waiting for the host to wake up, you will train in it a bit.
-[X] Start training Possession to Level 3 while you wait for morning after talking to the host, etc
--[X] If we're tired enough to have it affect our performance, rest for a while. Delaying our plans is preferable to making a mistake at this stage
-[X] Remove your disguise. You don't need it anymore.
[X] You will let Tavar's host wake up to question her.
-[X] As a precaution you will wear the cuendillar chain, and Jon will wear his Shardplate and be behind(as in if the host faces East Jon's on the west side of the room) the host. Both of you will put up your defensive sequences. You will also put up Focus and Senses to better perceive any lies. When she wakes, reassure the host that she is safe, but also warn her against doing anything violent, and then remove the restraints when she acknowledges.
--[X] Keep Tavar somewhere secure and not near her host while we're talking to the host, if at all possible.
--[X] Assuming she shows no signs of hostility, try to be as kind and gentle as possible. She might be a totally ignorant victim. Still, be ready for anything.
[X] Introduce ourselves and tell her we came to save our brother from Viserys. Quite frankly that is literally the only reason but things escalate since most people are equally good. Go talk to her about the below sympathetically. EG: It must have been so terrifying to not have control, freedom, the knowledge that there's a chance that this month, this week, this day and hour may be her last.
-[X] Tell her the current situation, and apologize for not being able to let her go right now. But then point out that its as much for her protection as its ours. If Jorah or Drogo found her, they might react badly. Really badly. Especially since Tavar was instrumental in Viserys's plans and that the aforementioned two might be aware of it.

I'm so envious. I'll have to wait 'til after Christmas to get my copy!:(

No Spoilers, please.
Dragon Age Inquisition is about Blah Blah and Spoilers where Blah and like most DA Games is Spoilers. That said the Blah was awesome. That said combat was Meh, replayability annoying and a little bits and pieces of problems here and there.

[pulling stuff from a**]
