I am not voting reflexively anti canon ship by ship as much as hoping we can build up non canon trends of shipbuilding over time. Secondary hulls is very much the canon standard for bigger federation ships later on.
If it's that common in Canon, that must mean there is some sort of advantages that they give. I also think it's part of the charm and visual identity of the franchise.

TBH, from what little I've heard, the canon NX sounds underpowered-as-hell, even for 22nd century Earth's first attempt at a high Warp vessel. Even if the new weapons make it a bit more scrappy, having a second hull, along with the extra space capability it will allow, sounds like a good idea.
I agree with this. United Earth didn't bother waiting to develop/get better weapon systems from the Vulcans before trying to explore the universe. Very much the ideal was "peaceful exploration."

Archer tried to further embody the ideals of a peaceful people and left spacedock early with weapons uninstalled for the NX. Just so he could explore and meet new people.

He then got his hopes and dreams trampled so, so very hard with multiple civilization ending threats.

To be fair, the ship launched before it was officially completed.

This is a tough one, because on one hand we could spend less Industry with the warp field regulator, which seems wise given we're still pretty lean on that resource, while also saving us from rolling for even more prototype techs with this super-deflector.

But on the other hand that secondary hull could help future-proof our design and ensure we wouldn't need extensive refits in the future...

We already grabbed the full saucer, let's try and save a little bit of money on this

I'm normally one of the loudest voices about taking Starfleet in a different direction than it does in canon, but I simply believe the secondary hull is far too important to leave off a ship just because of a want instead of a need.

Will we also be doing non-alpha-canon designs like the Enterprise era Discovery class from that one game? Like that ship I linked some videos about?

I think the original ENT was meant to be more of a science ship like the oberth class, but they had no idea what was out there, we do, so that's why we're building a multirole explorer in the fashion of later Trek

First taste is free. ;)
We aren't paying for the first one, the rest we still need to make the normal way.
Fair, but there's really no NEED to make more than one NX at the moment because we're designing this one with exploration in mind.

We HAVE the Stingray and the Zheng He, we can always use the NX as a testbed vessel and explorer, and distribute technology that we know works from the NX to the other two classes.

Besides, if we need a heavier combat vessel or responder in the NX's rough weight class, we can always design and build a slimmed down combat spec model THEN that won't have all the fiddly stuff of an Explorer.

Then, once we get more settled in, we can THEN build more NXs, or whatever replaces them.

Edit:

You Industry guys want to expand Industry?

Use the Stingray and the Zheng He as our production vessels, at least for the moment.

As Enterprise(or whatever we end up calling it) comes back from it's missions and shares reports and practical knowledge of how our more advanced technologies work, we refit them into our ships as needed.

If we need more science vessels, we can either refit the Zheng He with labs and better sensors, or we can build a relatively economical science vessel(like a Proto-Oberth?).

We continue the process. Use the NX as a tech demonstrator/tester and Explorer, and upgrade our more economical classes as tech becomes more understood and practical

Later, if we get enough industry, we might build a new NX as the 'Next Step up' with whatever fancy things we can shove INTO that one, and we continue the process...maybe while shifting the (not?) Enterprise to more local duties as it ages.

Time to make the NX-class look nice with a real (and chonky) secondary hull. The extra space, weapons, and redundancy we gain have totaly not something to do with my choice!
