The City – that's what everyone called it – was quiet, but this silence wouldn't last for long. The first rays of the morning sun signaled the start of the usual hustle-and-bustle as the loud cheers and jeers filled the air as bands of hot-headed youths started another race. Nothing much to do around here, so they raced to drive away the boredom.

Speed was everything here. Whether you used your own legs, skates or boards didn't matter one bit: all's fair in love and war, they said, and racing for the residents of the City was both. Hopping across the rooftops, sprinting down the murky alleyways or even driving a fancy car: fair's fair.

At least, that's how things used to be. Recently, more and more police forces started appearing on the streets. Normally, you'd let them chase you around a bit to show your respect for the badge and leave peacefully, but the new folks weren't like this: you get caught by them, you get caught for real. The new commissioner, Pearl the Fennec, was nothing if not a hard-ass.

Rumors were, she was the one behind the initiative, practically strong-arming our Mayor into following her mad crusade. Nowadays, there were more 'bots patrolling than people strolling outside. Talk about going overboard.

But when things went pear-shaped, people didn't lose hope because Sonic was here, smiling his smug smile and promising he'd make things alright again. That didn't happen. No one knows what happened to Sonic, but there wasn't a single whiff of him ever since he tried to butt heads with the commissioner a few weeks ago. And with Sonic, all hope was lost.

It was every man for himself. Gangs were fighting with each other for best turfs and tracks, while trying to keep the police of their backs. All the "honor among the racers" talk quickly got forgotten, or being more honest, those that did believe in the code were the first to get apprehended, so the only people left were cowards.

But you didn't hear any of these dreadful news, so when you came to the City, enamored with all the tales about freedom and whatnot, what awaited you was the reality, and it was hard and chrome. Namely, the Egg-Bot Number 24601. People like to call him Jean because one smart-ass saw a musical once.

"Move along, citizen," Jean mumbled. "Nothing to see here."

Whoever programmed them sure had no idea how to make their police-robots likeable. They were all business and no fun. If metal could scowl, you were sure they'd be looking daggers at every passerby. And the wheels they had for legs weren't for show, either: blasted things were as fast as wind.

So, you did some digging around, and what you found were the Gangs. Not many had survived the purge, with bigger one absorbing the smaller just to stay afloat. The biggest ones were the Dark Clouds, led by some creep named Shadow. From what you heard, most of the work was done by his lieutenants, so almost no one knew what he even looked like, but the Clouds were strong and promised protection to everyone aligned with them.

Then, there were the Snipers and their leader, Nack the Weasel. They weren't a proper gang, but rather a mishmash of three minor ones that huddled together to find strength in numbers. The recent talks were that it was only a matter of days before they split again.

Of course, you couldn't forget the Babylon Rogues. Jet was the name of their leader, and not a single soul had idea why this bunch of nomads decided to stay here for so long. Maybe they were searching for something or maybe they came to like the City this much. All you knew: they were the only folks fast enough to outrun the police on a good day.

The Chaotix. Truth was, no one expected for them to last as long as they did. Guys had their hearts in the right places, but you couldn't deny they were goofballs. Vector was their nominal boss, but from what you heard, the guy didn't like flexing his muscles too much. Or at all.

Finally, there were the remnants of the Sonic's gang – Blue Blazes. When Sonic disappeared, they were crushed. Half of them wandered off somewhere, at least a quarter went head-on against the police forces and never came back, so things seemed pretty dire for them. So much for being local celebrities.

Most surprisingly, you heard the commissioner herself was recruiting people for her personal squad.

You felt it in the air. The City was a giant barrel of powder, and you arrival was the spark that'd set the entire chain of events off.

You were…

[] Insert name.

[] The Colibri. Fast on your feet and never knowing when to shut your tiny beak, you were always the shortest person you knew much to your chagrin. You sure knew how to punch above your weight, though.

[] The Bear. Sometimes, size matters, and with a palm the size of someone head, size mattered quite a lot to you. Some people called you slow, though. They didn't get a chance to call you that again.

[] The Wolf. People said you were unpredictable, and you told them to shove it. All in all, there weren't that many things special about you, so you made yourself special on your own.

[] The Hedgehog. Were you Sonic's lost-lost cousin-twice-removed? Probably not, but some people saw the resemblance was there, making you wonder if all hedgehog looked the same to them.

Your first decision was…

[] Join the Dark Clouds.

[] Join the Snipers.

[] Join the Chaotix.

[] Join the Blue Blazes.

[] Join the Police.

[] Go solo.

[X] Go solo.

Lets stay neutral for now try to feel the situation out and try to be a neutral party until we know a bit more about the au
but if I decide against this Ill probably go for the Blue Blazes or Chaotix

i think that the small, fast choice best suits the Sonic protagonist mold and i like the idea of a lighthearted main cast

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting any Jet Set Radio vibes? With the police being hardasses and the fact there is a character named Jet.

Jet Set Radio certainly was one of my sources of inspiration, but Jet the Hawk is a proper Sonic character. He appeared in the Sonic Riders series.
