Sonic belonged to Nintendo

So, let's say that Nintendo purchased the rights to the Sonic the Hedgehog series. What sort of new games would be produce, and how would people react?

Nintendo would likely just let the ip die except for occasional appearances in Mario[cart/racing/whatever] games. There would really be no point in Nintendo running another platformer mascot character in competition with Mario.

By that metric, there's no point to the Yoshi or Kirby IP's either, as they both compete with Mario as well. (well, technically Yoshi is a part of Mario's IP, but now pretty much a distinct identity unto itself) What they'd do is take Sonic back to the roots and do that, high-speed semi-twitch platforming, a different niche within the market.

The biggest issue Sonic seems to have is that Sega seems to be wholly incapable of learning what worked with a new sonic game, as long as Nintendo is able to do that then they'd probably have good odds of reviving the IP into something people will look forward to playing rather than looking forward to seeing how horrible a train wreck it is like they've done in recent years.

Most likely, Nintendo would make sure that the gameplay was at least, well, playable. Probably not anything amazing, but better than what SEGA puts out, with a few gems here and there.
