Dictators, government, the people, oh my! Can you survive ruling an African island nation? If you think so, good luck, and don't lose your head!
Dawn, the Capitol, at the end of the Revolution...
Location
Canada
The sun shines brightly down on the Capitol's street, casting long shadows that dance in rhythm with the swaying palm trees. Nearby, a catchy song about revolution blares from an open window, filling the air with its infectious melody. Yet, despite the lively tune, the few people brave enough to venture outside focus on one thing: the tank rumbling down the median. It flies the flag of the new government, fluttering as it kicks up dust and debris from beneath its tracks.

The tank, rumbling down the median with soldiers straddled alongside it, is...

[ ] An M41 Walker Bulldog, a slightly cheaper copy from the original Cadillac design, imported over under the old regime. Once a symbol of oppression under the old guard, it is now a symbol of freedom under the new guard! (Would set the game in the early to mid-1950s)

[ ] An M551 Sheridan, originally used under the old regime paratrooper units, what few existed. Once a symbol of oppression under the old guard, it is now a symbol of freedom under the new guard! (Would set the game in the early to mid-1960s)

[ ] A T-72 copy, designed and gifted to the old government by the Soviets. Once a symbol of oppression under the old guard, it is now a symbol of freedom under the new guard! (Would set the game in the early to mid-1970s)

[ ] An AMX-40, specifically an even cheaper copy than the original, shoddily built under the original regime. Once a symbol of oppression under the old guard, it is now a symbol of freedom under the new guard! (Would set the game in the early to mid-1980s)

[ ] An M1 Abrams, a genuine one, likely bought by the old regime on the cheap through the black market. Once a symbol of oppression under the old guard, it is now a symbol of freedom under the new guard! (Would set the game in the 90s to early 2000s)

As the tank rumbles forward to the now occupied Presidential Palace, the soldiers straddling the tank step off and march with a determined stride. Their uniforms, though mismatched and worn, are adorned with armbands bearing the new regime's emblem—a bright sunburst, symbolizing the dawn of a new era. The citizens, peeking out from behind doorways and windows, watch with a mix of hope and apprehension. The streets, once silent under the weight of fear, now buzz with the tentative stirrings of change.

The Presidential Palace, a grandiose structure built with the wealth of the nation's resources, stands as a stark reminder of the old regime's excesses. The gates now swing open as the tank and soldiers approach. Inside, the corridors echo with the sound of hurried footsteps and murmured plans. Amongst the chaos, a lone figure stands at a table, reading over various maps.

"Commander," One of the soldiers, a young white man with piercing blue eyes, approaches and salutes, "the Capitol is secure. The people are starting to gather outside."

The figure turns from the maps, and gives a rare smile to the soldier

"Thank you, Lieutenant," They replied, returning the salute. "Ensure that our message is heard. We need the people to understand that this is not just a change in leadership, but a transformation for our nation."

"Yes-

[ ] Sir!"
[ ] Ma'am!"

The Lieutenant nods sharply before turning on his heel and marching out of the room. The figure takes a deep breath, looking around the opulent room that once belonged to the deposed dictator. The marble floors, the gold-trimmed furniture, the crystal chandeliers—all symbols of the corruption and exploitation that had plagued their land for decades. But now, under their command, these halls would be the birthplace of a new era. Whether they would be swallowed by the very vices that once held the last government was yet to be known.

As they take a deep breath, they face a nearby mirror, golden and opulent as they look at themselves in the mirror.

They see…

[ ] A black person staring back. It makes sense, you are born from one of the tribes taken here as slaves under your former colonial masters (or, perhaps, willingly, depending on your specific lineage). Your eyes are worn and tired from the fighting, and you look ten years older than you were a year ago, but nonetheless, you're here, and still kicking.

[ ] A white person staring back. Many folks, especially the majority black/mixed race population of the island might not appreciate the perception of their former colonial masters suddenly returning in the form of a white leader, but nonetheless, you took up the banner, so you must carry it on. Your eyes are worn and tired from the fighting, and you look ten years older than you were a year ago, but nonetheless, you're here, and still kicking.

[ ] An Asian person staring back. A descendant of one of the Asian emigres who came here during the immigration boom, you stand out from the majority black population, but not being a white person helps…somewhat. Your eyes are worn and tired from the fighting, and you look ten years older than you were a year ago, but nonetheless, you're here, and still kicking.

[ ] An Indigenous person staring back. Somehow, your lineage survived the colonization and enslavement of your people. Now, you're here, the face of a defiant people who chose dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery. Your eyes are worn and tired from the fighting, and you look ten years older than you were a year ago, but nonetheless, you're here, and still kicking.

[ ] (Write-in a specific ethnicity or racial background, if other)

The weight of responsibility settles on your shoulders as you leave the opulent room. You make your way to the balcony overlooking the square, where a growing crowd of citizens and soldiers awaits your address. Their eyes are filled with a mixture of hope and uncertainty, their expressions mirroring the tumultuous journey that brought them here.

You open your mouth to speak, using the "official" language of the island, that being…

[ ] English. Before taking over South Africa from the Dutch, the British used the island as a refitting and trade port between various African colonies. Throughout the decades, it was an important Navy base for the Crown's sea power in Africa. After independence, English is still the most common tongue in the nation. (Will officially make the island's default language English and name the island the 'Strait of Drake', after Francis Drake.)

[ ] French. Before the British could establish a firm foothold after discovering the island in the 1600s, the French took the claim and turned the island into a strategic naval base and a hub for trade in the African Ocean. French colonial architecture still adorns many parts of the island, and the language remains prevalent, even after independence. (Will officially make the island's default language French and name the island 'Île de la Dubois', named for the explorer Sieur Dubois.)

[ ] Spanish. In the late 15th century, Spanish explorers discovered the island and claimed it for the Spanish Crown. The island became a vital stopover for Spanish ships navigating the treacherous waters of the African coast. The influence of Spanish culture and language remains strong, and it is still the official language. (Will officially make the island's default language Spanish and name the island 'Isla de Reyes', after the Kings who funded the explorers.)

[ ] Portuguese. The Portuguese, during their Age of Exploration in the early 16th century, discovered and colonized the island. It served as an important maritime outpost for their African expeditions and the spice trade, as well as the slave trade (but that's a given). The Portuguese language and culture have left an indelible mark on the island. (Will officially make the island's default language Portuguese and name the island 'Ilha de Vasco', after Vasco da Gama.)

[ ] German. In the late 19th century, during the scramble for Africa, Germany established a colonial presence on the island. It became a strategic naval base and a center for German colonial administration in the region. Despite being taken over by the Portuguese in the aftermath of WW1, German is still the spoken language of most. (Will officially make the island's default language German and name the island 'Whilhelminsel', after Kaiser Wilhelm II.)

What exactly is your speech to the people?
