Shield Hero, but hopefully Heroic

Okay I'll be honest, I was really hoping Motoyasu found her because he honestly isn't that bad (save for that one continuity with him inexplicably trying to enslave Filo). Malty is a terrible influence, but given how things went during the introduction I figured he avoided teaming with her.

Eh, the timelines don't match up. Motoyasu is already out of the country at this point (the sale is taking place at about the same time as the battle Yukihime just went through).

In canon, around two weeks passed between Naofumi being summoned and his purchasing Raph. Here, Raphtalia is staying with Snidely Whiplash a bit longer, because the Shield Hero was busy leading an abolitionist rebellion at the time.

True... Still, I can't help wanting a better outcome for Raph. Besides, would of been pretty hilarious watching Motoyasu act like a doting father. Could even imagine him being shocked and confused by her being "suddenly a hot adult".

Still, how do we justify Yukihime getting a filolal egg? ... Pretty easily actually, given the need for steeds and whatnot. Being an AU, wouldn't even be that extreme having Filo's egg being somewhere other than the slave trader's place.

Oh right! What about Filo? Would actually be pretty adorable/heartbreaking seeing her as Yukihime's new adopted daughter. Right now, she's nothing more than a Hero and Commander, be nice having something or someone properly reignite her Humanity.

Filo is still an egg. Motoyasu from the interlude from King Aultcray vanished sometime after you said your goodbyes, nobody within Melromarc knows exactly where he went nor did they really care due to all the shit going down immediately. Malty is trying not to have a mental break down seeing that her chances of getting married to King Pig just increased because her plan went down the drain entirely so she never got the chance to interact with Motoyasu.

The two characters that had the slight chance of rolling correctly to get Raphtalia on their party (aside from Yukihime, who would've ended up with them if you decided to go down a more bloody path) was Itsuki and Ren. Ren had a slight investigative roll when he was in the capital to figure out just how bad the world was, and whether he should continue staying within Melromarc, he failed so he doesn't even really understand shit yet because he's been out in the wilds power training with his 'guild'. Itsuki went the wrong direction and walked right into another encounter.

If Yukihime is anywhere near the roads from Zeltoble to Melromarc she has a large chance of just pillaging the caravan and seizing the eggs... You're just on the wrong side of the country. Other than that Filo will be in the capital and I'll either roll to see if she's sold as an egg or if she hatches in Slaveman's clutches. There's also a chance that the caravan doesn't make it to the capital and Filo is born free in the wild somewhere.

Trust me, things will get better for Miss Raphtalia. It'll just take a bit. Beyond the timelines not matching up, I wanted to explore some themes that require Raph to be alone.

As for what those themes are? Well, spoilers~

So... Seeing as we'll need more steeds for our growing Liberation Army, who wants to go liberate some filolal eggs?

Other side of the country, I don't think we'll get our chance to reach her without putting our rebellion at serious risk. Of course, if that particular caravan happens to swing our way?

That said, I'm actually semi-concerned at what would happen if we DID recruit Filo-anyone remember that high filoal Queen entity? I'm concerned she might look at Yuki and go 'Okay nope, this one's not salvagable.' and directly move towards killing us as a result. Yuki might have enough heroism in her to avoid that bad end but then again maybe not.

So listen, I'm not good at speech writing and that's sort of awkward considering that Yukihime needs to do a lot of them.

You lost a great amount of your soldiers. You can only blame your own incompetence for such waste of life. Even now, as you view your new fortress all you can see is a great river of blood that flowed around the cold stone. You can still see the bodies piled up at the gate of friend and foe alike... This was your burden, you were guilty. Murder was all what you knew, and you felt melancholic. You had the injured from both your army and the enemy army brought to the courtyard, you additionally had the slaves brought out as well... Your men look at your form questionably, not understanding your intention... "The battle is over, isn't it? Yet we look at each other with such naked hostility and fear... This cannot do. Lord Rey, release your slaves immediately or be cut down." Lord Rey looked blue in the face, and scampered away from his captors towards his slaves "Y-yes! I'll do... I'll do what you say, I'm sorry!" You walked over to him and leaned menacingly over him so he'd stop blabbering and get over with it... And watched with concealed awe as the slave marks slowly vanished one by one from his demihuman slaves.

Your men grabbed Lord Rey and threw him back with his family... You note with disgust that one of his children had demihuman features, a bastard child... For a moment you felt like striking him down, to kill him and his men for his disgusting actions. To establish fear in the hearts of those who would commit this injustice before smothering it. You closed your eyes, the roaring, thunderous haze constantly screaming in your mind vanished and you smiled gently and when you talked, you did so not at them but at the world. "You're all fools. Disgusting imbeciles who hurt and enslave each other over pieces of the ground. You face total annihilation, constant invasion from demons and a life of misery and pain. When you developed your enlightened mind, you didn't make machines or tools to better the world... You forged a sword to cut! How disgusting... But don't worry." You bent down and patted the halfbreed child slightly on the head, "I'll forgive you. I'll forgive all of you. It's not your fault truly, that you descended into such barbarity... You are indoctrinated! You are all taught to fear and hate each other. You are all forced to kill each other by uncaring lords and masters fighting over pieces of dirt! How pitiable. In my world, the world of the common man and not uncaring Gods, of uncaring monarchs there will be no need for war. The senseless killing and torture will stop, so to that end! To reconciliation and the eventual unification of all peoples, I declare that we heal friend and foe equally! From the oppressed to the former soldier, to the repentant lord to the humble servant! I will treat you and then I will free you in the name of the betterment of the world... For the greatest virtue, isn't it forgiveness? Isn't it to reprimand the careless child and teach you to do better instead of punish them? If we could just raise beyond ourselves, we could achieve what nobody else could!"

You went a bit manic in your speech, but you believed every word. There could be no peace, no freedom from oppression until you broke the indoctrination a large portion of the population was under. You note with some amusement that you've shocked most people into silence... "Well, what are you waiting for! Let's get to work." You shouted at your monks, and they reluctantly went to tend to the enemy army, and less reluctantly tended to the Demihumans who suffered from minor injuries and burn wounds from the slave seals. The largest benefit from recruiting monks was that most knew a thing or two about medicine... Not that you're going to let them do all the work, you immediately grabbed some first aid supplies and began applying what you knew.

In truth it wasn't such a laborious task that you thought it would be, unfortunately a large amount of the enemy didn't survive leaving only around one hundred injured soldiers from the initial defenders and forty-six reinforcing cavalry sans horses, no match for your small elite force that'd cut them to ribbons if they tried anything. It only really took a few hours and you only had a few scuffles you had to break up... But you can tell a lot of your men are a bit angry with you deciding to heal the enemy... Tough, you sort of needed the population to be sympathetic to you and you're not really okay with killing soldiers that have surrendered even if it was a common practice back where you're from... If the enemy knows you'll treat them kindly in your care then they'll give up instead of fighting you hopefully...

After that you allowed your men, and Lord Rey's men to rest for the night making sure to keep an eye on them... Then you had them kicked out with a few spare carriages to help carry the more wounded men. Lord Rey and his men might be a problem later on, but you don't regret sparing them... Everyone should get a second chance, and you didn't want to take away a father in front of his children. If he comes to face you in the field again, you wont hesitate to cut him down though. As for the former slaves...

"Please let us join you!" Ten of them came to volunteer for you, and you felt sick... Did they think you wanted to become their employer after treating them? "That's not necessary... I don't expect anything in return for my actions. Please do not think you owe me anything!" You needed to stomp down on the temptation to just accept them into your ranks, was this coercive? Was it wrong to accept them... You think so. "We owe you our lives, our freedom! But it's not just that... Your speech... I want to believe it can be done, that we can fight for equality between our people and enter a age of peace. Either you accept or I'll follow you everywhere regardless!" The one in front, a fox like man with a formal looking grey tunic overcoat... You tapped your fingers against the desk in the castle study... How do you respond to that? "Fine, but don't feel obligated to follow me. You, and everyone else can leave my service whenever you wish..." If you're left with nobody and nothing, then it was because you were too weak and incompetent. You wont force anyone to follow you, not now, not ever. "Thank you, thank you! You won't regret this." You still felt a bit icky... But as long as you made it clear that they're free to leave at any time it's okay right?

The rest of the Demihumans spoke of you with approval, but were wary due to you being well... Human, and couldn't trust you or weren't willing to fight in a war. You didn't take offense, and allowed them to settle a small settlement near the foot of the mountain of your other fortification. Speaking of settlements... You just realized that just because you won the pitched battle and destroyed all the military forces in this administrative district of Melromarc it didn't mean you actually controlled anything.

"What the fuck do you mean we have to deal with these 'Manor Lords' first?" This is the first time you've heard about this. "Manor Lords and Barons control most if not all of the villages in this area... It's where Lord Rey got a lot of his soldiers from. Each village has a population of around 500-700 and slaves make up... Twenty or so percent of that population per village with some exceptions of some slave majority 'villages' that are little more than labor camps. The high slave population comes from frequent raids into Faubley's territory that the king of Faubley unoffically allows to happen because he's related to King Aultcray... I propose a pacification campaign against these manor lords. Make them either surrender or be cut down like with Lord Rey and establish new management of some sort..." William explained to you... Well shit, you guess that you needed to clean house.

I should mention you gained a point of personality and unlocked the first aid skill at level 2.

Please choose one option for every underlined selection.

Because Lord Rey consolidated all the soldiers from various Manor Lords and military outposts to his own castle, you will easily take over these villages without any issue. You just run into the problem of who exactly is going to be governing these villages after you abolish serfdom and remove said lords...

[X] Empower the people! You will give each village the ability to elect it's own leader.

[X] Empower intellectuals. Master Hillwick didn't just host a bunch of martial artists, he also sustained one of the largest hubs for heretical thought, philosophers and free thinkers on this side of the country. Make use of their education and brain power to coordinate the villages.

[X] Empower the Monks. You have more than enough educated people in your army that you can make use as administrators instead.

Another large problem is the fate of the churches in your territory... Most of them are dedicated to the religion that hates you and thinks slavery is a good thing.

[X] Exile them and take their riches. Burn the temples to the ground.

[X] Exile them and send a messenger across the border to request missionaries from the Church of the Four Heroes to replace them.

[X] Exile them and send your more loyal monks to inhabit these new temples to spread your philosophy.

Demi humans and humans aren't going to get along just because you say so... How are you going to deal with this headache?

[X] Hate Crime Tax and other similar laws. Every time someone vandalizes a demihuman home, they must pay restitution. Repeat offenders will be exiled.

[X] Temporarily separate them and try intermingling them down the line.

Democracy just leads to famine at this juncture, since nobody they'd elect are exactly skilled at all.
And while we have plenty of monks now, once we spread them out we'd wind up lacking our army.
So intellectuals as the least bad for now option.

As for hate crimes...Yukihime just lacks any background to actually stop it. Hate crime tax would breed resentment, and aparthied...well we've seen that IRL.

Sorely. Tempted.

Not to mention that democratic elections amongst a presumeably racist populace won't be the best solution for our demi friends.

"Personal Philosophy" because we're all about that "Everyone should be free" bit, and Hate Crime Tax because... well, keeping people separate is counter-productive if you want them working together. Empower Intellectuals because they definitely need smart people in charge to help manage everything.

Pity the democracy probably wouldn't work out. But we need to ease the people into it.

I mean, tbh I didn't tell you anything about the current plans for the quest that should effect your ability to vote. Most of what we talked about was stuff people could look up at on the wiki, and what wasn't is stuff not happening in this arc.

@Sword of Mars: Is there any reason we can't impose a Hate Crime Tax + Other Laws alongside the Temporary Segregation action? Just separating them won't really stop the racists, so actively punishing them would be a better deterrent.

Man I can't wait to see how the Four Heroes church will be taken by these people.
"Greetings, Child! I have come to you to ask if you have accepted the Light of the Four Heroes an--"
"Oh, yeah, we pretty much fit the bill."
"Wh-what do you mean?"
"Well, we've already seen what the Shield Hero is all about, and she doesn't seem all that bad! Never understood why our previous rulers thought this whole Three Heroes thing was a good idea in the first place. Fucking politics, I swear."
"Oh. Well that just makes my job a lot easier!"

Apartheid didn't work very well the first time around. Let's not repeat history.

Interesting how I've seen people argue that the other choice in separation/hate tax they pick would cause apartheid.
I'm imagining there'd be consequences either way. I'm not really up to snuff on my slavery and apartheid knowledge, so I'll refrain from putting out paltry amounts of what information I have.

A lot of the thinking Yukihime puts into statecraft is surface level. She grew up in a lawless anarchistic land with very little rules beyond neofeudal territories and military juntas from successor states. Specifically what Yukihime is doing is pilfering what she experienced in her brief time inside a 'state'. That is, to punish agitators with removing their luxuries or simply separating them. If Yukihime was more well versed in running a political body, she would in fact think a lot deeper about solutions on hand... But she isn't.

For a deeper explanation of her mindset between these two options, is one is more velvet glove than iron fist. Yukihime is, without a doubt a dictator even if she gives off some colors of benevolence and she sees it herself and thinks that's fine. It's why the title of the threadmark of when she raised her flag in rebellion was called Warlord. How does this connect to her very basic state policy? It's because she's going to force them to listen to her one way or another via force.

Anti Discrimination Laws are there to force them to get along. The offending party has to pay restitution, and this doesn't have to be money. Yukihime thinks blood can be paid in blood, and so she would in fact execute someone for murder. She reckons after she makes enough examples out of people they will fall into line, and accept it as their new reality. It's fast, but it's brutal. The more 'traditional' commons would be pretty upset.

Separation is to avoid the nasty business of getting involved to early and knocking peoples heads and wallets until they all stop bitching in her opinion. If one village attacked another village, she'd probably count that as rebelling against her direct orders and stamp out the ones responsible. This is defacto segregationist, it stops people from interacting with each other enough to fuck with one another... But it's still segregation. Albeit segregation with the end goal of reconciliation at a later date. Demihumans will be upset by being forced to move, and so will a small fraction of the humans that have demihuman friends.

So the "Laws" are for a more iron fisted rule ("If you can't behave, don't blame me for laying down the law..."), while the segregation is more maternal oversight? ("If you can't get along, then it's timeout for both of you!")

I personally think we should at least separate the two groups, and let them officially mingle in the future as equals, perhaps after a generation has passed. As is, I wouldn't be surprised that we'd have to "punish" a large amount of humans for their still-fresh discriminatory views on demihumans.

Then again, this is my wishful thinking. They're being ruled by a child soldier with mental scarring. Our choices are not gonna end up happy for everyone either way.

Yuki also shouldn't bother with doing laws while she's still in open rebellion against Melromarc. Maybe when things quiet down and peace is established.

My opinion, of course.

Maybe we could not force people out of their homes and separate people from their friends & family? Like, how the heck is "Temporary Segregation" suppose to handle Human/Demihuman couples, people with hybrid kids, etc?

Spoiler: I don't have experience with law laying nor with segregating races, so I feel free to disregard my opinion and vote.

I just don't think it's the best plan to make some laws that would probably not prevent hate crimes from happening in the first place. Punishing them would show that we're willing to stand up for the demihumans, yes, but we do want to promote equality for both? Currently, they can't be equal, and there might be a disgusting display of discrimination since people will always find ways through the cracks.
"Oh, it's not a hate crime that my workers are all humans! I have very strict requirements for my tavern! It's merely that the demihumans that have come here don't meet the standards! They're fine folks, of course, but the qualified ones probably went looking for work elsewhere."
"Why does our academy not have demihumans? Well, it has high monetary requirements, of course! Is it my fault some people are rich and others are not?"
<insert other discriminatory actions veiled behind a veneer of being fair>

All excuses that would circumvent the law and still be ways of allowing people who hold these discriminatory views to continue propagating their thoughts. We aren't exactly playing a lawmaker, so there's not much room for nuance in the rules we make in-setting.

Forcing the two sides to be separated would be very inconvenient, yes. But by separating them we might be able to restart their views on one another. Then again depending on how they are separated the effectiveness could be varying wildly. Then again, this is just a chance. I don't know the probability for this. Also, this isn't IRL, and these people are literally different species, so we don't know how this will conclude. Perhaps some of the demihumans would go to the Demihuman kingdoms? There's places outside of Melromarc we might be able to contact, especially with the "find missionaries" optikn.

This isn't a scenario where we can pick the obviously nice Golden Hero Option to be instantly loved by everyone, and this will piss off some people regardless of what option we choose.

I don't know how many demihuman-human families would exist, compared to the other humans who own demihuman slaves, as well as separate communities of either race. Ideally Yukihime would order the demihuman-human families to stay together, as they could be shown as examples to what everyone should strive for? I don't know.

I'd think it's better for Yukihime's mental state to separate them and think about this later. Not that it would be guaranteed to work, mind you. Each option presents its own bad outcomes, so I don't really want to argue over how y'all should vote. I do argue that you should vote what you believe to be the right choice.
