Prologue
'The origins and revelations of meta-humans' by Dr. David Brahnham. Published August fourth, 2083.
Foreword: This book retains the sole purpose of shining light on the filed of meta-physics, and the author does not condone the actions or ideals of any meta-humans in this book. By the same token, this book is under no means targeting meta-humans in any way, despite what the (real) stories used in this book may suggest. Also, the theories and discoveries portrayed in this book, are not the intellectual property of its author, as many of the breakthroughs made in Meta-physics were accomplished by the individual known as 'Vigil'.
Chapter one: Potential Origins?
All information regarding the early days of meta-humans, or pre-Vigil, as it is often called, to is rather sparse, and subject to extreme suspicion. The most reliable claims are nothing more than stories with witnesses, claiming they were saved by a flying man, or someone lifting their crashed car out of a river. It is widely recognized, however, that no records of meta-humans exist before 1999.
The first concrete records of meta-humans begin to pop up circa 2015, mostly made by Vigil, with scattered police reports, of meta-humans around the Denver metro area. While most of these reports are little more than simple observations, some of them detail multiple theories, some possible, most absurd.
To begin, most meta-humans describe a single moment of their lives when it 'just clicked'. One second they would be perfectly normal human beings, the next they would be capable of pounding the laws of physics into their constituent particles.
While the circumstances always vary, their 'trigger events' always seem to relate on a conceptual level, with the persons powers. A meta with fire based powers may trigger whilst trying to light a fire, a teleporter may trigger after being buried alive.
Also, when examining data on meta-humans trigger events, a surprising amount (approximately 5%) occur near the city of Denver. While this may seem like a lot, the highest percentage of meta-humans in Colorado at any given time, is only 0.5% of its total population, with that number falling off over time.
It is also of note that within just a few months of the circle of Denver's investigation into meta-humans, it became obvious that there was know way to distinguish a meta-human from a regular human, in any physical, mental, or genetic way, although devices were eventually developed to detect certain meta-humans, often by the affect on nearby physics many have.
As the number of meta-humans grew in the state of Colorado, many researchers flocked to the state, attempting to distinguish themselves in rapidly growing field of meta-physics. With the field growing with new minds, many theories sprang up to their origin.
Some of the more sensible theories describe minute changes in the quantum foam of reality, allowing certain configurations of the nervous system to affect physics on a fundamental level. Some of the more, 'occult' theories include connections with ghosts, hidden genetic impurities, and the cells of giant alien space whales. Irrelevant of the biases and insanities, behind every theory, there is simply not enough proof to prove any theory true.
However, despite being unaware of their origins, meta-physicists do know how certain powers 'work'.
