The Start of a Legend
It was
Seijin no Hi, the day in which a boy becomes a man, the family was reunited to celebrate your achievement; but despise all the
noun playing different instruments and the girls dancing you still felt sadness, because despite this being probably the most important day of your life your father and wasn't there with you. You knew that his presence was required on the battlefield but he could have taken a few days of leave from the front in order to see his family in such occasion.
Your brooding brought you to one of the balcony of the
Shiro overlooking the festivities down below, which continued despite your absence; it was while looking down on the party that you heard the shuffling of a kimono, you turned your head and saw your mother standing beside you " What is now
musuko?" she asked with voice full of concern "as something happened to you?". You graced her with a small smile "No
haha, I simply long for father to be here, with us in this moment" "Oh my son, I know it must be hard for you, but your father is needed at your uncle side." You turned your face towards the festivities and exhaled deeply, then raised your gaze to the starry sky "I know, and I understand father's duty but I still think that my uncle could have let him take a few days in order to be present to the ceremony" said so you turned around and looked her in the eyes; "But this doesn't matter now, let's go and enjoy the party".
The next day you felt your head throbbing for the
sake that you had drank the previous night but willed yourself to rise from your
futon and start the day: first you proceed to rinse yourself and then, after a light breakfast composed by rice and some meat you went on to your duty, that for the most consisted in praying to the castle's shrine and practice
Iado; after that you decided to seek out your best friend, you had to search for a while for him but eventually you found him in the castle's garden, looking at the
koi pond, you reached his side but he seemed to not notice you so you called his name
[] Daisuke Takahashi, the son of one of the Clan's retainer, you two spent most of your free time together brawling and training with the
bokken, despite his bigger physique you are still ahead in the contest of blade's skill
[] Akimitsu Yamamoto, he is a fragile boy always racked by illness that prevent him from taking up the
katana, so he decided to spent his time reading and writing about the history of famous
samurai and now he can recite some of them word by word
[] Hiroshi Mochizuki, that was surely a strange friendship, you the son of one of the
Daimyo' brothers and he, a simple merchant son, but despite the stigma he carried you shouldered on the disapproval of the family and still made him in your best friend
[] Hibiki Morino, strange guy; he almost never smile but when he does is terrifying, still he is a good friend and seems to know everything about everyone, his only defect is that he is so silent you can barely know he is there with you
[] Jun Shaku, despite his advanced age Jun remain sharp as ever, he is a Buddhist monk that traveled across Japan during his younger days and has decided to settle on your family land, normally he tend to the shrines of the fiefdoms but recently has taken residence within the castle
After hearing his name your friend turned towards you and smiled "Good to see you, are you okay, yesterday you drank so much?" "Yes, I am; I wanted to talk with you, because I have doubts in my mind" "Tell me" he simply said " I am now considered a man, but I am unsure of what to do, should I join the rest of the
samurai on the battlefield or try to find my way elsewhere?". Your friend simply tossed a stone inside the pond " Look at the ripples, they were caused by a small change; you are like the stone, you will change the context around you whatever you do, your choice in the end won't matter, only the result" you frowned and replied "That's not exactly a helpful advice" "No. it is not, but it will make you reflect; and from reflection will came understanding".
After your friend words you parted ways and you found yourself inside the family shrine, there you decide to light some incense and pray for guidance, you spent hours inside only to be roused from your deep state of meditation by a monk "Young Lord the Daimyo has returned", to his words you quickly raised to your feet and run towards the castle gate, where already a large group of people was amassing; there you moved forward taking your place amongst the others members of the family.
Finally you managed to see your uncle riding at the front of the column of returning samurai while the crowds of peasants that surrounded the road bowed low to their Lord; once inside the castle your uncle removed his
mempo and shouted "The enemy marched towards our lands, towards ours homes, towards ours families; we have given them battle and we have emerged victorious" at those words the courtyard started cheering; but you felt a sense of dread. Because despite all of your effort you could not see your father anywhere, but your uncle next words reassured you "Do not fear if you don't see your family members here, I have left half of the army behind to guard the border under the commands of my brothers".
Later that night before the victory feast you were called aside by a retainer that gave you a message: your uncle wanted to speak to you privately, that made your sense of despair reappear, but you still followed the servant towards one of the balcony, there stood your uncle. You bowed low as manner dictated and awaited his words; only for them to crush you under their weight "I called you here to give you the notice personally… your father his dead, he lead the charge that broke the enemy flank but was killed by the enemy commander, rest assured that his death was avenged. But this doesn't matter; you lost your father and I lost one of my brothers" he turned giving you his back "Now go and inform your mother, you are excused for tonight and you may mourn him tomorrow, but the day after we will speak again".
The night and the day after were spent in a daze, you remember to have cried yourself to sleep together with your mother and to have drunk copious amount of sake until you fell into oblivion; only to be roused by your friend "Wake up, you have to clean yourself and go to speak to your uncle, or he will be very crossed at you". So you bathed and after having donned a white kimono is sign of mourning you made your way towards your uncle's rooms there you were stopped by a guard that after having cheeked the reason for your presence announced you.
You found yourself in front of your uncle, noticing that he too was wearing white, and after the necessary bow seated yourself in front of him; then you stood in silence waiting for him to speak first, as custom dictate; but you had to wait a long time before words left his lips "I loved him you know, it is wrong but between all of my brothers or even my little sister I loved your father the most, his death as left a hole in my heart that nothing will be able to fill" "Thank you for your words, it gladdens me to know that me and my mother will not be the only one to miss him" at your words he left out a sad laughter "Do not thank me yet, you do not know what I have planned for you" before you could speak he raised one hand "Your father was a fearsome warrior and I doubt you don't want to live up to his legacy, but I have plenty of brave and capable samurai under my command; no I don't need your blade, what I need is your blood". You were stunned by your uncle words but he didn't gave you time to recover before continuing.
"Your father wanted you to have more than his name as a legacy, he asked me to give him some land to rule over in my name so that he could pass them onto you at the time of his death. Now I face a problem, I promised him exactly what he asked but he died before I could grant him the land he was promised. Now I should grant you the land but the problem lies that while he was an accomplished warrior and the granting of land to him would not cause any problem you are an unknown, you have no fame yet; neither as a warrior or as an administrator, so giving land to you would be like a slap to the face to some of my most respected retainers". You swallowed the saliva that had accumulated in your mouth and asked "Then what my Lord? What is going to be of me?".
He drank some tea from a cup and answered "You may call me uncle when we are alone, but to answer your question I may have find a solution. You see, during the last battle one of my oldest retained died, he was the administrator of one of my villages; normally I would let his family retain that position but he died without having a son, so I must find a new administrator, so I would gave the duty to you, to see your mettle; and if you are capable enough maybe one day the size of the land under your control may grow. What do you think about the proposition?"
You find the answer leaving your mouth before you could think of it "I am humbled by the honor you bestow upon me uncle" "It is no honor, the place cost me more than what produce, your first duty will be to make a profit out of it, the mean of it I will leave into your hand; now go and prepare yourself you leave in three days" you raise to your feet, bow towards him and make a quick but dignified exit from the room; quickly walking all the way to your mother room to give her the news.
The next days were spent in an hurry, you had to pack all of your belonging and load them on a cart, then you had to make offering to the family shrine, both to thank your father for his later gift and to ask your ancestor for guidance in your future endeavors. The last day fund you sitting in front of then koi pond wondering about the future when you felt an hand rest on your shoulder, it belonged to your friend "I see you have found time to come here and reflect" "I was thinking about your words, about how my choice didn't matter" "Oh, and what have you concluded?" "That you were wrong, my choice is the most important thing, it is by my choices that I will shape my destiny and now my choices will shape the future of many others" "Mmh a good answer, I see you are still sound of mind despise all of the bokken to the head that you have taken" "And?" "And I admit that I was wrong about my advice; now when we leave?" "We?" "Of course, you didn't thought for a moment that I will leave you right? You are my friend, wherever you go I will came with you, now let's go we have a long voyage in front of us".
Later the same day you left the castle behind at the head of a small procession directed to your new home, after a while you turned your gaze backward toward the place where you had spent all of your old life, and your mind drifted towards your most found memories

But then you understood that this was only the beginning, after you would make the place flourish surely recognition from your uncle would come and with that probably more land and title. That brought your spirits up and make you smile.
When you reached your estate you were greeted by a small building with only a dozen rooms surrounded by a wooden wall; there, after having deposited all of your belongings inside, you asked for the village elder to come and greet you, only to discover that there wasn't one, the last one had died during the winter and the previous retainer had not replaced him; so for the moment you had no direct connection with the villagers under your rule. Finally after the long day of travel you decided to lie down and sleep.
